Maleny Rotary Club brings RYDA to Maleny High School

Maleny’s RYDA program is more than a program, it’s partnership which supports teachers on the journey as they provide their students with the tools and understanding they need to see themselves as active, responsible road citizens.

RYDA is delivered to over 660 high schools throughout Australia and New Zealand, with an average of 40,000 students participating in the RYDA Program every year.

young people will soon be obtaining their Learners Permits so it’s vital to educate them on road safety and how to speak up if they’re a passenger in a car.

The program provides students with the tools, habits and motivation to take action and stay safe on our roads as both drivers and passengers throughout their lives.

RYDA features a highly engaging and memorable one-day workshop that front-loads students’ understanding of road safety. The workshop sessions are designed to be held in small classroomsized groups (approximately 25 students) and are led by a team of trained facilitators including Police, driving instructors and other community sector specialists.

This is now a yearly event on the calendar and the day is spent at Corbould Park in Caloundra. Four members from the Maleny Rotary Club were there to assist as group leaders on the day and even they learned some interesting facts and update their knowledge.

It goes to prove you can always learn something! nd out more about the RYDA Program visit: https://rse.org.au/about-ryda/

More Upgrades for Maleny - Kenilworth Road

It's all happening on Maleny-Kenilworth Road at the moment! Perhaps most importantly, TMR are now rehabilitating the old timber bridge at Cambroon Creek as part of their progress towards getting two full lanes of the road sealed.

The Booloumba Creek section is now almost finished and tree clearing on Lee's Road section is also underway. And it doesn't end there either! Slope stabilisation is currently occurring at Bakers Gully in Witta. It's all coming together now and I just can't wait to see the final result of the new and improved MalenyKenilworth Road.

Can you believe it. The QCWA Maleny recently held their 95th AGM!! What an achievement! Congratulations ladies.

And thank you for your support of 16-year-old Conondale swimmer, Kael Thompson - who was the guest speaker. Keep an eye out for this young lady. She picked up five medals at the recent Virtus Global Games in Vichy, France. And has set eight new Australian records since April. I suspect it won’t be long before we see Kael representing Australia at the Paralympic Games.

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher Federal Member for Fisher

More politics won't #Close The Gap.

There's not a single law which doesn't affect Indigenous Australians. Don't let Labor divide Australians along the lines of race. While Labor's Canberra-based #Voice will add another layer of bureaucracy, it won't deliver the outcomes we want to see in education, healthcare, and employment.

What you enshrine in the Constitution will become a permanent fixture. More politics won't #CloseTheGap.

Mr Wallace said voters overwhelmingly supported symbolic recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, but the Voice question was on track to fail.

This top-down, elite Canberra Voice does nothing to help Indigenous communities on

the ground in rural and regional Australia. What the Albanese Labor Government is proposing is divisive, risky, unknown and permanent. I support the constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. I support Australians having their say.

We need to get rid of this idea that Government knows best. Aspirational Australian families and their businesses know best.

Do you have a mould problem

Why you need an Air Purifier in Australia

Air pollution is a pressing global issue, including here in Australia and it's not limited to the outdoors. The EPA states that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Air purifiers help combat this by filtering out pollutants, allergens, and other harmful particles, creating a cleaner and healthier environment both at home and at work.

Air purifiers eliminate common allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander, which are typical triggers for allergy flair-ups.

Air purifiers can help minimise the spread of airborne illnesses by capturing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.

The 1875 charter of the National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland was to promote and encourage Queensland’s agricultural and industrial development, and to provide a unique opportunity between August 12th and 20th for country and city people to join together in celebrating Queensland life.

Whilst it changes each year there is one thing remains a constant …….. the westerly “Ekka Winds”

The Brisbane Ekka, officially known as the Royal Queensland Show, is an iconic event that has played a significant role in the history and culture of Brisbane, Australia. Spanning over a century, the Ekka has become a cherished tradition, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Let's delve into the rich history of the Brisbane Ekka and explore its evolution into the beloved event it is today.

The origins of the Brisbane Ekka can be traced back to the late 19th century. In 1876, the National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (N.A.I.A.Q.) was formed with the objective of promoting and advancing the agricultural and industrial sectors in Queensland. The association envisioned an event that would showcase the best of Queensland's produce, livestock, and craftsmanship. Thus, the idea of the Brisbane Exhibition was born.

produce, along with a variety of entertainment options. It was an instant success, and in subsequent years, the event grew rapidly, necessitating a move to larger venues.

The Ekka is such an important part of the Queensland cultural calendar that it’s only been cancelled twice in 134 years. The first occurred in 1919 during an international flu epidemic, as the grounds were being used as an emergency hospital. It was cancelled again in 1942 as the army needed the site for training and troop accommodation.

The first Brisbane Exhibition took place in 1876 at the Bowen Park, attracting an estimated 17,000 visitors. The event featured displays of livestock, machinery, and agricultural

In 1891, the Brisbane Exhibition moved to its current location at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground, or Ekka Park as it is commonly known. The new site provided ample space for exhibits, pavilions, and show rings, allowing the Ekka to expand its offerings. Over the years, the event continued to evolve, incorporating new attractions, competitions, and entertainment to cater to the changing interests of the public. In 1921 King George V allowed the show to be named The Royal Brisbane Show . This followed a visit to Brisbane in 1921 by then King Edward V111

Who Gives A Crap? - We Do!

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

One of the highlights of the Ekka is the agricultural displays. The event showcases Queensland's rich farming heritage, with exhibitors presenting their finest cattle, sheep, horses, poultry, and more. The judging of livestock and produce has always been a central aspect of the Ekka, with prestigious awards and prizes being bestowed upon the winners. The agricultural displays not only celebrate the achievements of Queensland's farmers but also provide a valuable educational experience for visitors.

Beyond agriculture, the Ekka offers a wide array of attractions and activities. Showbags, a quintessential part of the Ekka experience, are bags filled with various goodies, toys, and treats that visitors can purchase. Showbag pavilions become bustling hubs of excitement, with people of all ages eagerly exploring the vast selection on offer.

The first ever showbag was awarded to Governor Cairns, a government official instrumental in establishing the event. Keeping with the primary industries theme, his bag contained locally-sourced coal, sugar, gold and quicksilver, a substance made from crushed quartz.

Showbags were initially called “sample bags” and they began to change in the 1920s to include more consumer-friendly items such as preserved fruit, lollies, biscuits and cake mixes. Originally showboats were free then in the late 1920’s a small charge was made, but the products were mainly samples of the various businesses and used to promote a businesses products.

These days, there are hundreds of bags to choose from, and they contain an incredible array of goodies; gadgets, magazines, tickets to

performances, artisanal food, toys, chocolates, chips and sweets.

The Ekka also features amusement rides, sideshow games, and live performances. The iconic Ekka ferris wheel offers breathtaking views of the city skyline, while the adrenaline-inducing roller coasters and thrill rides provide exhilaration for adventure seekers. Additionally, visitors can enjoy live music, cultural performances, art exhibitions, and even cooking competitions. The Ekka truly offers something for everyone.

One offering introduced in the 1950’s was locally-made strawberry sundaes and still remain immensely popular today. Today more than 180,000+ Dagwood Dogs will be eaten along with140,000+ Strawberry Sundaes.

This does not include the 32,000+ cheese toasties (two tonne of butter and four tonne of cheese) 180,000+ schooners of beer and 35,000+ cans of rum.

The 1950’s also brought to patrons events such as the Jimmy Sharman boxing tent, the Wall of Death ,trotting races and the sheep dog trials. Side show alley was crowded you didn't fall over you would have been trampled. The walkways at that

time were dirt and every gust of wind would blow dust into your face. The Ekka was such a large part of a young persons life and something to be always waiting upon.

At this time the easiest and most convenient way to successfully get to the show was either by train, bus or tram with all coming all the way into the Ekka Grounds. In 2023 the trams no longer run around Brisbane and the train service will not go directly into the show grounds because of interruptions caused by the construction of the Brisbane Cross River Rail Tunnel.

To find out transport arrangements for 2023 visit the web site: https://www.ekka.com.au/changes-toekka-public-transport-2023/.

The event has become synonymous with community spirit, fostering a sense of belonging and pride among Queensland’s residents.

“Ekka NITES” each year wow the crowd with a nightly show of over 3 tonnes of fireworks with a nightly value of over a million dollar in a fireworks extravaganza.

Today, the Brisbane Ekka continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, making it Queensland's largest annual event. It serves as a platform for businesses, farmers, artisans, and entertainers to showcase their talents and products. Moreover, it brings together people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of unity and celebration.

The Ekka has been like a “trade show” over the years where new products and new models of old products were introduced to the people of Queensland.

In 1959 television started in Queensland with QTQ Channel 9 being first to broadcast and it was publicly demonstrated in black and white at the 1959 Ekka by ABC Channel 2. At the time many people said; “it is too expensive and it will never catch on”.

In the late 1950’s - early 1960’s another event that was introduced to the Ekka was chariot races. These traded on the popularity of the epic movie “Ben Hur” which starred Charlton Heston and was released in late 1957

Over the years, the Brisbane Ekka has faced challenges, including disruptions caused by wars, economic downturns, and natural disasters. However, it has managed to endure and adapt, becoming an integral part of Brisbane's cultural fabric.

The history of the Brisbane Ekka is a testament to the enduring importance of agriculture, industry, and community in Queensland. It highlights the connection between urban and rural areas and underscores the significance of preserving and appreciating our natural resources.

As the Ekka continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy for generations to come, preserving the traditions of the past while embracing the innovations of the future.

You can visit the Ekka YouTube channel to see all the latest Ekka TV episodes at : https://www.youtube.com/user/EkkaRQS or visit Ekka on line at: https://www.ekka.com.au/

Living with Bushfires in Australia

Over the past weeks watching the news about the fires in Greece and the Mediterranean area should send a word of caution to Aussies about the coming summer season. Now is the time to preprepare so that a dangerous situation does not eventuate.

Bushfires are a common occurrence in Australia, particularly during the summer months, and they can have devastating effects on communities and the environment. As a resident of Australia, it is important to understand how to live with bushfires and how to prepare for them.

Understanding the Risk

The first step in living with bushfires is to understand the risk. Australia is a country that is prone to bushfires due to its hot and dry climate, particularly in the southern and eastern regions. The risk of bushfires is highest during the summer months, but they can occur at any time of the year. It is important to stay informed about bushfire conditions in your area and to have a plan in place in case of an emergency.

Preparing Your Home

Preparing your home is an important part of living with bushfires. There are several things you can do to reduce the risk of your home being damaged or destroyed by a bushfire. These include clearing leaves, twigs, and other debris from your gutters and roof. Removing flammable materials from around your home, such as woodpiles and dry vegetation and installing metal fly screens on windows and doors to prevent embers from entering your home.

Creating a Bushfire Survival Plan

Creating a bushfire survival plan is essential for living with bushfires. This plan should include an evacuation plan, including multiple routes and a meeting point for family members, a list of important documents and items to take with you in case of evacuation, a plan for pets and livestock.

It is important to discuss your bushfire survival plan with your family and to practice it regularly. Staying informed about bushfire conditions in your area is crucial for living with bushfires. You can stay informed by listening to local radio stations and following emergency services on social media.

Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.

The national referendum on the vote to establish a “Indigenous Voice to Parliament” through Australia’s constitution. to improve the lives of First Nations peoples.

The Federal Member for Barton and Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ms Linda Burney M.P. at a recent speech to the Australian Press Club luncheon has branded those opposed to the referendum on “Indigenous Voice to Parliament” as being racists when she alleged that Australia was importing “Trump type politics”.

This attack could be seen as an patronising attack on ordinary Australians who may have had differing views to Ms Burney. After all not everyone may have similar views to Ms Burney and that does not make those other ordinary Australians bad or racist.

In her attempt to promote the “yes” vote over recent months she has shown herself to use “bullying tactics” herself to disparage the “no campaign” voters. She showed little respect when she was attacking the opponents to her views rather than presenting a stronger case to promote her own views.

Her actions has turned this referendum into a community divide along the lines of a party political argument and a distraction from the real issues.

Rather than turn this matter into racial and an emotional matter the people promoting the “yes” vote should be more diligent in promoting the actual facts, including how this voice would work and what it actually means to the Australian constitution and the people of Australia generally.

If introduced would any of the hundreds of government or semi-government bodies already allegedly, at a great expense to the people of Australia, looking after the interests of Australia’s Indigenous people be dismantled. This would include the The National Congress of Australia's First Peoples (Congress) which is supposedly a unifying voice for representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in Australia.

Both sides of this referendum need to be honest and not try to pull the wool over the eyes of the Australian public for their own political needs.

By law this referendum must be held between October and December 2023 and its success depends on gaining majority support from four of the six Australian states across the country.

Truthful’s neighbour Paddy from Dublin, appeared on ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ and, towards the end of the program, had already won $500,000s.

“You’ve done very well so far,” said Eddie Everywhere, the show’s presenter, “but for a million dollars, you’ve only got one lifeline left, phone a friend. Everything is riding on this question. Will you go for it?”

“Sure,” said Mick. “I’ll have a go!”

“Which of the following birds does NOT build its own nest?

a) Sparrow

b) Thrush,

c) Magpie,

d) Cuckoo

“I haven’t got a clue.” said Mick, so I’ll use the last lifeline and phone my friend Paddy back home in Dublin.”

Mick called up his mate, told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him.

“Fookin hell, Mick!” cried Paddy. “Dat’s simple. It’s a cuckoo.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m fookin sure.”

Mick hung up the phone and told Chris, “I’ll go with cuckoo as my answer.”

“Is that your final answer?” asked Chris.

“Dat it is.”

There was a long, long pause and then the presenter screamed, “Cuckoo is the correct answer! Mick, you’ve won 1 million dollars!”

The next night, Mick went round to Paddy’s to buy him a drink.

“Tell me, Paddy? How in Heaven’s name did you know it was da Cuckoo that doesn’t build its own nest?”

“Because he lives in a Fookin clock!

Buying & Selling Residential Property in Queensland The contract With

Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The standard contract most often used in Queensland has been developed by the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) and the Queensland Law Society (QLS).

Usually, a real estate agent will prepare a standard REIQ contract for you to sign.

Be sure to get advice before you sign – send the draft contract and disclosure material to your solicitor to make sure they are correct and that they meet your needs.

The standard REIQ contract cannot deal with the individual circumstances of every transaction.

If necessary, your solicitor can add special clauses to the contract, for example the: purchase may depend on the sale of your existing property; property is not subject to flooding; and sellers have obtained all necessary statutory approvals and complied with those approvals.

Buying a residential property is a major financial transaction for most people. So, it’s vital you seek the advice of your solicitor before you sign any contract.

With increased numbers of residential properties changing hands in Queensland and a recently revised standard

Web Address: http://eastonlawyers.com.au/

residential contract we thought this was a great time to review a few residential contract basics.

Over the next few weeks, we will review the fundamental issues in residential conveyancing for buyers and sellers of houses, units, and town houses.

Australian-made On-grid and off-grid energy storage systems

RedEarth Energy Storage is a proud sponsor of The Block 2022

“Monitoring your power system”

RedEarth’s monitoring system got a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shout out on episode 14 of The Block this year, and we’d like to tell you a little bit more about it… Especially as we’ve actually upgraded from the software that was used during filming, and have a new and improved version.

With so many current and potential opportunities available to customers in how to monetise their energy, RedEarth has developed RedPi – a monitoring solution that connects to and reads the inverters in our systems and sends that data back to us.

With this data, we’ve created a simple interface in our app to make it easy for our customers to keep an eye on their energy usage, so they can make decisions to optimise their electricity using real-time information about how much solar energy they’re generating and consuming.

Whilst Red Earth’s app isn’t the that does this, of course… but here’s where they go further and help our customers be their own power plant and make money from their electricity.

Through our EMU (energy monetisation unit) ecosystem, we can also help customers take advantage of unusual market conditions in order to make money from their excess solar. One of the ways they do this is by trading energy using a smart algorithm which understands a customer’s regular energy usage, and predicts market conditions to export excess energy at the highest peak price to maximise earnings from feed-in rates into the grid.

Does energy trading really work? Well… one of RedEarth’s team members tested it and made over $200 in one day – and that was without solar panels, just through storing electricity in batteries and charging and discharging them according what the energy market was doing.

Maleny and the Dairy Industry

The photo below shows Dixson’s Dairy farm at Maleny circa 1897. It was purchased from the Graves family by T.C. Dixon, who later went on to hand manufacture quality shoes and boots from a factory at 406 Montague Road, South Brisbane.

The land on which the Maleny Community Centre now stands was given to the community in 1907 by Mr. Dixon, who also donated 250 pounds towards the building of a centre, intended for “public use and entertainment”.
