ANZAC DAY 2023

RSL Maleny Sub Branch - Program for ANZAC Day 2023

Join RSL Maleny Sub Branch to commemorate ANZAC Day in Maleny to honour the service and sacrifice of the original ANZACs and all the service men and women who have followed in their footsteps.

ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I.

.The main service, commencing at 11a.m. at the Maleny Sub Branch Cenotaph will include the laying of wreaths, the playing of the Last Post and the observance of a minute's silence.

ANZAC Day traditions date back more than a century.

At ANZAC Day you'll often see four members of an armed guard. These four people – most commonly of the Defence Force – are known as a catafalque (‘cata-falk’) party and act as a mark of respect for the fallen until the end of the service.

The haunting sound of a lone bugler sounding the Last Post is possibly one of the most emotionally evocative tunes Australians know. And perhaps the only that sees people acknowledge it with a moment’s silence as it plays.

It has been adopted to herald the service people who have gone to their final rest, symbolically marking the end of their duty.

Maleny ANZAC Day 23 Commemoration Ceremony

After Community Commemorative Ceremony there is lunch in the RSL Maleny Hall followed by traditional games.

Community groups wishing to March and/or place a tribute at the 1100 Commemoration Service

Please contact RSL Maleny prior to the day on 5435 2672 or by emailinfo@rslmaleny.org.au

Gangsters and Flappers come to Maleny

“Maleny Rotary runs a Casino”

Looking for a fun night out to dress up as Gangsters and Flappers of the 1920s? Then come along to the Maleny Rotary Casino Night on Saturday May 13th at the Maleny RSL Hall. The night starts at 6p.m. Ticket cost $60 per person and includes dinner and a spin in the chocolate wheel. Sales close on May 6th, so get in now to secure yours.

This will be a memorable night of entertainment and laughter, so why not join in and dress like a “gangster or flapper”.

Maleny Rotarian, Ric Townsend says that any money raised will be going to Maleny’s Naval Cadet Unit, TS Centaur and the Maleny Mens Shed, who both need some funds to upgrade their respective buildings.

The night will be packed with Maleny Rotary’s funny money to play on the Roulette wheel or try your hand at Blackjack, Crown and Anchor, Acey Ducey or just a good old Aussie game of Two Up.

You can buy your tickets now at either end of town at Maleny Communications or Barbers of Maleny. There are prizes valued at over $2500 up to grab. Those prizes include two nights stay at Shangri-La, Darling Harbour, Sydney.

This is just another of Maleny Rotary’s community events. To find out more about the Maleny Rotary Club visit: https://www.malenyrotary.org

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

Back in the 1940’s and 1950’s households were changing from wood fires to the “new” instant electric stoves. The electric “Early Kooka” was one of the most popular.

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used our donation could go to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects.

An equal voice for all Australians is the bedrock of our liberal democracy.

It was at the heart of the Commonwealth Franchise Act 1902, which gave women the right to vote. It was at the core of Menzies’ Commonwealth Electoral Act 1962, which gave Indigenous Australians the right to vote. Whilst the Parliamentary Liberal Party has said no to enshrining the Voice in our Constitution because we believe that doing so would fundamentally change the way our nation is governed.said yes to constitutional recognition, we said yes to engaging with local and regional Indigenous bodies to shift the dial on entrenched disadvantage. We

said yes to enabling Australians to have their say at the referendum.

We all want to see better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. We need determined, inclusive and local action, across party lines, to truly close the gap.

We need to listen to the voices of women and children in remote communities who are crying out for law and order, alcohol bans, and income management. We need to listen to the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who have, for too long, been shut out of the conversation by a privileged few with the loudest voices..

Australia’s first Indigenous parliamentarian, Liberal Senator Neville Bonner challenged us to, “

What is Hard Wax Oil?

Hard Wax Oil is a blend of natural oils and waxes offering exceptional durability and resistance for internal timber surfaces including floors, bench tops, furniture and areas subjected to a high degree of wear.

It produces a quick drying natural matt, silk, satin or gloss water repellent, tread- fast finish that will not peel or flake.

Hard Wax Oil is easy to maintain and as a natural replenishable product it is easy to rejuvenate timber when required.

Preparation of the surface is important, ensure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from previous finish. Minor gaps and holes can be filled with Fiddes Filler Gel if required. Sand the substrate with a fine 120-150

grade sandpaper. Ensure the surface is clean and remove all traces of dust prior to application.

Before Application ensure all areas to be coated are extremely well ventilated during and after application. Always test on a small area prior to initial application. Stir the contents of the can thoroughly before and during use. No sealer or primer is required. A maximum 2 coats is recommended at a coverage rate of 20-24m2 per litre depending on density of substrate.

First Coat – For floors use a brush or painters pad to cut into the edges first. Apply THINLY using a brush or short nap 4-5mm microfibre roller and lay evenly following the direction of the grain. Leave

to dry for 4-6 hours in ventilated conditions and if possible good airflow. Longer drying times can be expected with exotic wood species and with unfavourable climate conditions.

Second Coat - Check to feel that the first coat feels dry and is not tacky. Using a non- abrasive pad (maroon pad for flooring) lightly abrade the surface. Vacuum/remove dust and then apply second coat as per first coat. Leave to dry in well ventilated conditions, preferably overnight. The coating has reached its maximum curing after 7 days.

Clean applicators with White Spirits.

Maintenance- Fiddes after care products are recommend to maintain your finish.

Fiddes Wood Floor Cleaner and Wood Surface Cleaner are a non-abrasive, rinse free formulation that will ensure the longevity of your timber surface. Do not under any circumstance use bleach, ammonia, or caustic based cleaners.

Spray Application- Depending on individual spray equipment, Hard Wax Oil can be diluted with Fiddes White Spirits up to a maximum of 10% as required.

VISIT THE FIDDES YOUTUBE CHANNEL FOR APPLICATION VIDEOS

Representatives from Fiddes Australia will be on hand at the Maleny WoodExpo to demonstrate their range of wood finishes.

Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises

Be aware and on the lookout for new traffic cameras

Queensland’s traffic cameras are about to be swapped out for newer technology traffic enforcement cameras to catch drivers behaving badly.

Artificial intelligence in the state’s nextgeneration of traffic cameras are to be introduced as authorities are keen to reinforce the “anywhere, anytime” approach.

Operation of the cameras will also swop from the Police Service to the the Department of Transport and Main Roads. This comes at a time when the tragic Queensland road toll is once again on the rise over the past two years after a period of decline.

Need a Roadworthy Certificate?

Maleny Service Centre have a Licenced Roadworthy Inspector on the premises and we know only too well what it takes to make your vehicle safe and roadworthy.

All vehicles (including trucks, motorbikes and trailers) must have a Safety or Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) if being sold, registered for the first time or being re-registered in Queensland. Registered Vehicles cannot be solid without a RWC.

With ANZAC Day soon to be remembered, it is appropriate to remember the services provided by Australian Army Nurses who also were involved in the many theatres of War.

Sister Vivian Bullwinkel, AO, MBE, ARRC, ED an Australian army nursing sister and prisoner of war. A victim of a war atrocity, she was the sole survivor when a group of nurses were machine-gunned by their Japanese captors in the Bangka Island Massacre.

The Banka Island massacre was the killing of unarmed Australian nurses and wounded Allied soldiers on Bangka Island, east of Sumatra in the Indonesian archipelago on the16th February 1942. This was shortly after the outbreak of World War II in the Pacific.

The lead-up to this massacre was on the 12th February 1942, and with the fall of Singapore to the Japanese imminent, sixty-five Australian Army nurses, including Sister Vivian Bullwinkel, were evacuated from the besieged city on the small coastal steamer Vyner Brooke. In addition to the Australian nurses, the ship was crammed with over two hundred civilian evacuees and English military personnel.

The SS Vyner Brooke was a Scottish-built steamship was a merchant ship frequently used between Singapore and Kuching

In the seas between Sumatra and Borneo, a Japanese aircraft bombed and strafed the overloaded ship and it sank

quickly. The survivors in lifeboats were strafed by Japanese aircraft but some reached Radjj Beach, Bangka Island off the coast of Sumatra.

A group of approximately 100 survivors, realising that their situation was dire decided that they should surrender to the Japanese.

A patrol of about fifteen Japanese soldiers arrived from the coastal township of Muntok and took the survivors into custody. They immediately took the men to the seashore and massacred them.

There is some suggestion that the females were sexually assaulted before they too were taken to the beach and marched into the sea. Once they were into the water they were machine gunned down. Whilst wounded, Sister Vivian Bullwinkel was the only one to survive the massacre.

On realising she was still alive, but wounded she made her way back to the beach where she found a

wounded British soldier, Private Kingsley who had been earlier bayoneted by the Japanese and left for dead

They hid out for 12 days in the bush. Whilst hiding out they were given food by the local village women from that area.

She cared for the wounded soldier until he died of his injuries.

The situation again being hopeless she again surrendered to the Japanese.

She survived a harsh imprisonment

After the War she give evidence of the massacre at a war crimes trial in Tokyo in 1947.

After the war Bullwinkel was active in military and civilian nursing. She reached the rank lieutenant colonel in the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps.

She later became President of the Australian College of Nursing.

She married Colonel Francis West Statham in September 1977.

She died on the 3rd July, 2000 aged 84.

Vale Robbie Palmer

R I P. “Robbie the Glassman

With enormous sadness we notify the passing of Robbie Palmer, “The Glass-man” owner of Maleny Glass on Tuesday 28th March in Maleny Hospital after a long illness. Our sympathy goes to wife, Angela, and sons, Lachie, Dom and Seb. Robbie was most likely best remembered for his support of the Maleny Bushrangers Rugby Club where he cooked much of the hot food enjoyed on Saturdays, helped set up the field for play on a Friday afternoon and night and as well as on the game. day. He also spent countless hours administering and raising funds for the club. At a celebration of his life at his loved club grounds, the Witta Sports Club on the 14th April the Bushrangers were well represented in their playing uniforms.

As business man he was also well respected. He was passionate about the Maleny area and kayaking on Maleny’s Baroon Pocket Dam.

Why you need an Air Purifier in Australia

Air pollution is a pressing global issue, including here in Australia and it's not limited to the outdoors. The EPA states that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Air purifiers help combat this by filtering out pollutants, allergens, and other harmful particles, creating a cleaner and healthier environment both at home and at work.

Air purifiers eliminate common allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander, which are typical triggers for allergy flair-ups.

Air purifiers can help minimise the spread of airborne illnesses by capturing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.

Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

The NDIS Scheme provides tax-payer funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community, and an improved quality of life.

Whilst this scheme is critical to many members of our society, it is unsustainable in its present form. The scheme is readily open to fraudulent activities from many directions, mainly service providers.

Fraud on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Australia has been a concern for quite some time. Whilst the NDIS is a government-funded program designed to provide support and assistance to people with disabilities there is no bottomless pot of money. Unfortunately, some individuals and organisations have taken advantage of the system for their own personal gain to the detriment of those that the scheme is suppose to assist.

Some of the common forms of fraud on NDIS Australia include:

1. False claims: Some service providers may submit false claims for services that were never provided or exaggerate the level of services required by the participant.

2. Double dipping: Fraudsters may charge twice for the same service or receive payments for services that have already been covered by another program or funding source.

3. Kickbacks: Some NDIS participants and their families may be offered incentives or kickbacks in exchange for using specific service providers.

4. Identity theft: Fraudsters may steal personal information to set up fake NDIS accounts or claim benefits on behalf of someone else.

Fraudulent activities can have serious consequences, including criminal charges, fines, and imprisonment. To prevent fraud on NDIS Australia, it's essential to report any suspicious activity to the authorities and stay vigilant about the services being provided. You are paying for any fraud through your taxes.

For the NDIS to survive - it is up to YOU!

Truthful tells us about his neighbour, a farmer named Paddy had a tractor accident. In court, the trucking company’s fancy hot shot lawyer was questioning Paddy. “Didn’t you say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine,’?” asked the lawyer.

Paddy responded, “Well, I’ll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favourite cow, Bessie, into the…”

“I didn’t ask for any details”, the lawyer interrupted. “Answer the question, …please. Did you, or did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine!’?”

Paddy said, “Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer behind the tractor, and I was driving down the road….”

The lawyer interrupted again and said, “Your Honour, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now, several weeks after the accident, he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.”

By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Paddy’s answer and said to the lawyer, “I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favourite cow, Bessie”.

Paddy thanked the Judge and proceeded. “Well, as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favourite cow, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my John Deer Tractor right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch, and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting, real bad and didn’t want to move. However, I could hear old Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans.

Shortly after the accident, a Highway Patrolman came on the scene.

He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning, so he went over to her. After he looked at her and saw her fatal condition, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes.

Then the Patrolman came across the road, gun still in hand, looked at me, and said, “How are you feeling?”

“Now tell me, Judge, how would you answer???”

“Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole

Selling or buying a property!

Don’t be alarmed!

Here are a few things to consider during the process

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

The new year has brought with it numerous changes in the law around real estate sales in Queensland, not the least of which involve utterly essential smoke alarms.

For example, the new laws state that smoke alarms must: be installed in each bedroom; on each storey of a house and in hallways which connect bedrooms to the rest of the house; be photoelectric and comply with AS 3786-2014; be powered by either 240 volt or a 10-year lithium battery; and be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the house so they all activate together.

Smoke alarms must meet these requirements prior to the contract being signed and if the

seller doesn’t comply, the buyer is entitled to an adjustment (read penalty) at settlement equal to 0.15% of the purchase price

If the seller has not complied after settlement, the buyer must install compliant smoke alarms. With so many new laws to adhere to, it is recommended that sellers use a professional smoke alarm provider to upgrade the smoke alarms in their properties.

We strongly recommended sellers book their properties in for a smoke alarm upgrade when listing their properties for sale as they are competing for available smoke alarm providers, with hundreds of rental properties that also need to comply with the new 2022 laws.

From 1 January 2022 all rental properties must comply with the new law at commencement of a new lease or a lease renewal.

Research suggests only 50% of Queensland rentals are currently compliant, creating a wait time of four to six weeks for a smoke alarm upgrade according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).

Australian-made

On-grid and off-grid energy storage systems

Energy Storage is a proud sponsor of The Block 2022

Are solar batteries a fire risk?

When adding a solar battery system to your home, it’s only natural to consider what risks may be involved. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation around the risk of batteries causing fires; in this post, we’ll have a look at the facts to ease your concerns.

In Australia, there are strict safety standards that regulate not only how a solar battery is built internally, but also the way in which it can be installed.

Within a battery system, a fire can ignite in three ways. The first is when there is a problem with the external electrical components of the system – that is, the wiring. The risk of this occurring is essentially the same as with any other electrical appliance in your home – pretty low.

The second way is ignition within the battery cell itself as a result of damage or internal failure. If the battery becomes pierced or exposed to extreme radiant heat, the chemical elements of the cell may become compromised. This type of fire is extremely uncommon.

The third is chemistry. Choosing a battery with a very stable chemistry, such as lithium iron

phosphate (LFP), reduces the risk of fire. It may make the battery system a bit heavier, though LFP can also be lighter than some less stable chemistries, too. Of course, a safer chemistry offers greater protection and peace of mind. For reference, an electric vehicle usually uses a more energy-dense, but less stable, type of lithium battery than a home battery energy storage system.

Risk of fire can be mitigated further by placing the battery in a secondary enclosure to protect it from mechanical damage. A qualified installer will also position your battery in a cool, safe, ventilated place outside your home so it doesn’t overheat.

In the unlikely event of a fire, switch your battery system off on the clearly marked switch on the main switchboard (not on the battery itself), and contact the fire department.

Remember, never spray water onto an electrical fire; water conducts electricity, and it may shock you.

Remember, Australia is one of the sunniest countries in the world and one of the best places to capitalise on solar energy generation.

Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range

Annual Bike Swap Event. - March 2023

The Queensland Historical Motorcycle Club hold their annual “Bike Swap” event at the Maleny Showgrounds on March 11th.

The Historic Motor Cycle Club of Queensland (HMCCQ) is an enthusiasts’ Club of members who take pride in keeping motorcycles 30 years and older, on the road. Through this event the club raises money for charities such as Queensland Cancer Council, Prostate Cancer and Bloomhill Cancer Care

For the last 20 plus years the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range has catered for this event and the bike swap and once again did so. This event has become one of the Club’s signature events.

A week out the weather forecast was good for the weekend

but as the event approached the prospect of rain increased, but thank the heavens it did not eventuate!

Over the years the event has shrunk from a full-on weekend catering gig to what has now become a modest dinner (sausages sizzle BBQ) for the exhibitors on Friday evening and a busy breakfast of mainly egg/bacon rolls and hot chips, drinks etc for the attending crowds on Saturday morning between 6am and 10am.

The Maleny - Blackall Range Lions Club raised over $2,300 pro fi t, which considering the bad forecast was a better-thanexpected result. Funds raised go to the various club projects to support the local communities.

The ChaDy Cafe Scheme

This ini'a've assists to relieve loneliness

Each Tuesday between 10.30a.m. and 11.30a.m. a group is meeting at “Chatty Table” at the Maleny Library, 5 Coral Street to have a “cuppa and a chat”.

This scheme, “Chatty Cafe” is about building friendly social connections – through simple interactions that may brighten someone’s day. Along the way it might also combat social isolation and loneliness, which is a big issue in Australia. This initiative is another project being undertaken by the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range. The “Chatty Table” will be staffed by volunteers each week who will join with chatty members who are happy to sit and chat with other community members who join the table.

https://issuu.com/Maleny-Grapevine-Community-News

The concept of ‘Chatter & Natter’ tables in the UK began in 2017 and there are now over 1,400 venues signed up in the UK along with venues in Poland, Gibraltar and interest is building in Canada and the USA.

Throughout all communities there are people who do not have a lot of interaction with others, those might include people with a disability, mums with new babies, students, parents with babies and kids, grandparents, people of all ages. A short conversation with another human can really brighten their day.

Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”

“Back on the road”

….. continuing on with my mission!

So I’ve been thinking about this, and it’s going to be something big if I do it. And by big I mean i willl

flog the bejesus out of me driving wise but i recon it’s possible and worth it especially now since I can do 40-50kph from my original speed of 37kph.

Now, I was just gonna knock the Center out of the way, go up to Alice and come down the Birdsville track and meet up with the circus later on in the year down in Adelaide but I did some checking of dates and have worked out that if I get my rear in gear then there’s a chance id be able to make the QLD show run for the second time in 2 years.

This consists for me at least of around 20 AG shows (last time I did it I believe I raised around $50,000 for my charities when I first started off, along with getting to see a lot of showmen I know who are close mates of mine, not to mention the Mt Isa Rodeo and the old fellas at the Camooweal Drovers festival.

It’s that or I just take it easy, but I’m currently at around the $155,000 raised mark of my fundraising goal of $250,000 (quarter of a million) and the show run in the past has been very good for fundraising as well as meeting people, hearing stories and shaking hands.

At the same time I don’t wanna annoy people down south who have been waiting to say Gday by having a couple extra months before I see them.

Decision time

As of March 31st

Like I said it’d be a truely massive endeavour on my part if I go with it as it’d be essentially doing 2 years worth of travelling into 2 months of almost non stop driving if I wanna make it…. Hopefully slim will be good to go in the next few days.

The RFDS is over $90,000 richer!

I’ll be heading down to Perth to say goodbye to the The Great Moscow Circus before

Follow Sam’s Travels

You can follow Sam’s adventures via his Facebook Page at “The Travelling Jackaroo”

Slim is now ready and now I am heading via Perth to Kalgoorlie.

Once again I cannot thank Geraldton Towing Services enough for everything they’ve done for me to keep me on the road.

Make sure that you look after your mates

proposed route - Maleny to Maleny!
Sam’s
heading East towards Kalgoorlie then across to Port Augusta.

Maleny Butter Factory 1924

The Maleny CoOperative Dairy Association was formed on the 3rd May1903, at a meeting held at the Wootha home of Joseph McCarthy.

The first factory was built in Maple Street, Maleny with Mr John Skerman as the first Manager. He remained in that position until 1926.

In 1908 the Maleny Co-operative Dairy Association won a trophy at the Franco British Exhibition in London, for butter produced at its Maple Street Factory.

In December 1911 a new Butter Factory was built in Coral Street and started processing cream soon after. This factory continued to process dairy until 1940.

In 1940 a new factory was built adjacent to the second factory and immediately started to process dairy. This building is where the Veterinary Surgery is today.

In 1978 the Maleny Dairy Co-Operative amalgamated with Caboolture Co-operative Dairy Association on the 1st July 1978. Soon after all production was moved to the Caboolture factory. The Maleny factory was used as a bulk milk storage area until the late 1990’s.

The milk industry in Australia was deregulated in 2000. This virtually meant the end of the dairy industry in the Maleny district. This led to the beginning of Maleny Dairies as we know it today.
