Mol and Vale agree to install two Norsepower Rotor Sails

Mol and Vale International have announced a partnership to retrofit a 200,000t class bulk carrier, currently employed under a mid–term contract for transportation of iron ore for Vale, with two 35m x 5m rotor sails produced by Norsepower. The installation of the rotor sails is expected in the first half of 2024. The Norsepower Rotor Sailmade of lightweight and strong composite material and with a fully automated control system, produces thrust as the wind generates di erential pressure around the slewing rotor while the vessel is sailing. By applying this solution, the vessel is expected to achieve about 6-10% fuel and GHG emissions reductions, combined with voyage optimisation technology – enabling significant advancements towards decarbonisation goals and reducing fuel consumption.

Given the shift in competence necessitated by the green transition,

attracting more and new students to this field is critical. The Ocean Campus will demonstrate in what ways the academic sector will contribute to addressing the industry’s demands for change, while also showcasing exciting opportunities available within the maritime sector. The Nor-Shipping Ocean Campus is a centrally located island of booths representing key universities and maritime schools from all over the world. This is where students can check out educational alternatives and current maritime employees can learn more about how they can top up their skills. Representatives from the respective schools will form the ‘Ocean Campus committee’ and will, in cooperation with industry experts, put together an exciting program that will take place on one of the main stages in hall E on Friday 9 June 2023. The presentations will demonstrate how these key educational institutions are preparing future maritime employees and leaders to tackle an industry in transition.

“Nilaya will be the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht for her length: she rewrites the script for high-performance superyachts.”
Jan Timmerman – CEO of Royal
Huisman.

Nilaya

At the start of February, Panamax sloop Nilaya reached another milestone with her departure from her construction hall at the builder’s Vollenhove facility in preparation for the installation of her towering rig in Amsterdam.

This highly anticipated superyacht is the first to utilise Royal Huisman’s new Featherlight design and production method. Continuous weight monitoring throughout the build of Nilaya, aka Project 405, confirms the Dutch builder has achieved its goal of slicing 11% of the weight of its typical advanced aluminium cruising yachts. Most importantly, it has reduced weight without sacrificing sti ness or cutting corners on quality for this high-performance cruiser. The shipyard’s Featherlight method for this 46.8m sailing machine is not a single process or construction technique, but a holistic light weight approach combining various weight-saving solutions.

The Featherlight process makes use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), a design methodology rooted in spacecraft technology. FEA modeling enabled selecting various construction materials and varied Alustar aluminium plate thicknesses and frame spacing to maximise hull sti ness while minimising total displacement. With engineering and weight management brought in-house, the approach was comprehensive, extending to lighting, insulation, and all mechanical systems. The interior, too, benefited from careful weight analysis. All interior structural members utilise lightweight foam coring. This innovative approach narrows the displacement gap between aluminium and carbon composite yachts. Comfortable, robust characteristics of an aluminium yacht are now a viable option for owners seeking true sailing performance.

Carbon fiber expertise to the max

Capturing the carbon fiber expertise of its sister company Rondal, Royal Huisman’s engineering team used this synergy to analyse and predict which structural components would be best made of composites or aluminium. For example, >>

SHIP DESIGN & NAVAL ARCHITECTURE shipbuilding-industry.eu SBI 2023 | V olume 17 | Issue 2 | 15
Launch of Panamax sloop Nilaya at Royal Huisman Amsterdam.

the entire 17.5m curvaceous coachroof and guest cockpit structure are carbon composite. Likewise, the recessed tender well on the foredeck (that transforms to a seating area for cruising or a flush deck for racing) is also carbon composite as are a watertight bulkhead, crew entrance, twin rudders, the keel trunk and a cockpit bimini hardtop.

For any high-performance cruiser, a carbon fiber mast, boom, and standing rigging are critical to keeping weight as low and as centered as possible for optimal balance. While Rondal has considerable carbon spar expertise, bringing the design of this component — and the sailmaker – into the process during the larger hull design phase is apage out of a maxi-racer’s playbook.

Best of both materials

Nilaya is also the first yacht of this size range designed to take advantage of structured lu sail design pioneered by Doyle Sails, a choice that allowed the entire Rondal mast, rig, and components to be lighter – a key point considering her Panamax air draft. To take advantage of the very narrow headsail sheeting angles possible, Rondal created a radical new curved carbon fiber spreader design that is both shorter and more aerodynamic than anything previously available. Rondal also supplied new generation hybrid (carbon and aluminium) captive winches, hatches and various sail handling gear. Most deck hardware is titanium.

Nilaya’s racy, low profile with its straight bow, wide transom, and twin rudders, echoes the look of her owners’ previous highly successful maxi-racer of the same name. Not surprisingly, she is from the boards of the same naval architecture and design firms, Reichel/Pugh and Nauta, both firms with impressive reputations for high-performance sailing yachts. Exploring all the options for a luxurious performance cruiser also capable of podium finishes at superyacht regattas, the team made full design studies for the yacht in both carbon and aluminium using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to optimise hull shape and balance. Royal Huisman’s Featherlight method, an evolution of nearly 60 years of aluminium yacht-building experience

melded with the latest carbon technology, provides her owners the best of both materials for a no-compromise yacht.

World’s lightest

Royal Huisman’s CEO Jan Timmerman used the occasion to highlight both the innovative construction methodology and the latest milestone for Project 405, “The success of the innovations with Project405 paves the way to use thisbold new approach for future builds. I am proud of the investment we have made in advanced engineering and of the way teams from Royal Huisman and Rondal advanced newsolutions to meet the brief from very knowledgeable clients and designers. The owners as well deserve congratulations for pushing everyone to achieve just a little bit more and for encouraging innovation at every step. Nilaya will be the world’s lightest aluminium sailing superyacht for her length: she rewrites the script for highperformance superyachts.”

A blissful home on the sea

Royal Huisman’s Project 405, Nilaya (which means ‘blissful home’ in Sanskrit) will be delivered to her owners in the coming months. At the start of April,

Nilaya was christened at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. The Dutch are a nation of seafarers whose culture has been profoundly shaped by the ocean over the past five centuries. They even invented yachting as a pastime and came up with the word ‘jacht’ to describe a pleasure boat. So it is hardly surprising that the country takes immense pride in institutions such as Het Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum) in Amsterdam, which house extensive collections of maritime art and artefacts illustrating this bond with all things nautical. Royal Huisman enjoys a close relationship with the National Maritime Museum, which also played host to the World Superyacht Awards some years ago. The christening ceremonies of various Royal Huisman yachts have been hosted by the museum, while the shipyard actively supports the institution’s cultural and educational activities.

New X-BOW expedition cruise vessel on the way

US-based shipowner SunStone Ships goes for another cruise vessel in its INFINITY class. All the vessels in this class are designed by Ulstein Design & Solutions AS. These vessels were the first to introduce the patented X-BOW design in the cruise industry, a solution that has been warmly welcomed by cruise passengers and crews alike.

Although all the vessels in this class are designed on the same platform, being 104.4m long and 18.4m wide, they are all customised to accommodate a varying number of passengers and crews, and the public spaces are also carefully designed according to the client’s request. This new vessel shares the feature of three other vessels in the INFINITY class on having windows all around the bow lounge to give lot of light and a feeling of being in the nature whilst indoors.

“We are immensely pleased to announce that we have signed a new contract with

the CMHI Haimen yard for the construction of a new X-BOW expedition cruise vessel of the Ulstein CX103 design”, states Lars Ståle Skoge, Commercial Director at Ulstein Design & Solutions.

Bringing the outdoors inside

Tomas Tillberg Design is responsible for the interior design of the vessel. “Our main focus is to bring the outdoors inside, capitalising on the big windows like the two-story atrium ones and especially the spectacular FWD bow windows that Ulstein made possible thus furthering the small ship to a big ship feeling,” Mr Tillberg states.

Vessel facts

The vessel holds accommodation for 199 passengers, and a crew of 101. She is ICE CLASS 1A certified for polar cruising, holds the highest comfort class, and is SOLAS1 certified including a Safe Return to Port passport.

1.The SOLAS convention regulates mandatory safety aspects for ships on international voyages such as construction, stability, machinery, electrical installations, fire safety, life-saving appliances, navigation, communications and carriage of cargoes. Source: DNV.

SunStone Boundless class

SunStone’s next project will be to build up to 10 next-generation expedition vessels in China from what they name as the Boundless class. These are slightly larger than the INFINITY class, having a length of 125m and capacity for 260 passengers in 130 cabins, all with balconies.

The Boundless Class is designed by SunStone with naval architecture completed by OSK-ShipTech. The interior will be designed by Steen Friis, Tillberg Design USA, or designers of the charterer’s choice and built/installed by European interior contractors. Furthermore, all technical equipment will be delivered by well known European suppliers.

SunStone’s next project will be to build up to 10 next-generation expedition vessels in China from what they name as the Boundless class.

The lead ship in this class is expected to be delivered in September 2025, with the remaining vessels following at two ships per year.

Ocean Albatros

‘Ocean Albatros’, ship number six in the SunStone Ships’ INFINITY series, had her launching ceremony on 16 September of last year, at the CMHI Haimen yard. Ulstein Design & Solutions provided the design and equipment package for this project.

In February of this year, the CX103

designed, polar expedition cruise vessel Ocean Albatros prepared for her first journey and there has been hectic activity to finalise the interior. Work proceeded on the reception, the carpet is being installed in the lecture area, and the mud room is taking shape.

Electrical work and carpet installation

After having returned from her sea trials, the interior work is continued on this X-BOW-designed expedition cruise vessel. Albatros Expeditions will start the

season in the summer of 2023, with the first journey going to the island of Svalbard in Norway. The town Longyearbyen is at 78 degrees north and is the northernmost permanent settlement before the North Pole. “Later, she will join whales, icebergs, seals and Greenlandic ords. A truly nordic built vessel with Finnish, Swedish, Danish components, and last but not least Norwegian design. We are all very proud of her,” says Anders Ellemann Kristensen at Albatros Expeditions.

Headboard frames and mud rooms

Among the interior work taking place these days, the first headboard frames for the passenger cabins have come up. Other than that, on a polar expedition

cruise vessel, the passengers go for regular excursions in freezing outside conditions. The mud room is an area for storing essential gear and clothes for such excursions. The clothes and boots

kept here are designed to withstand the outside conditions, while keeping the rest of the vessel clean and tidy.

The latest O shore Passenger Transfer System

Palfinger Marine is currently updating their state-of-the-art transportation system for the maritime and o shore industry – the O shore Passenger Transfer System (OPTS).

At Nor-Shipping 2023, Palfinger Marine will showcase a model of this technology for the first time. The OPTS is a 3D-compensated passenger and cargo transfer system. Designed specifically for marine applications in all kinds of environmental conditions, it compensates on all axes to absorb waves and other motions. It thereby facilitates the safe and e cient transfer of people and cargo between a moving vessel and a static o shore

structure such as a wind turbine or drilling platform.

The state-of-the-art system is an excellent tool to service fixed or semifloating o shore installations or perform de-commissioning work o shore. When mounted on small, cost-e cient vessels, the OPTS makes it possible to carry out operations at reduced expense. It can also be installed on service operation vessels (SOV), since the OPTS is

equipped with a winch that allows the system to be used as a 3D compensated crane.

“With the OPTS, Palfinger demonstrates its innovational strength and position as a provider of complete solutions. The system sets a milestone in the energy transition as it supports, for instance, infrastructure developments in the o shore wind industry or decommissioning activities in the oil and

gas sector”, says Gunther Fleck, Vice President Sales & Service Region Marine at Palfinger.

Fixed or flexible equipment

The OPTS comes in two variations –either as a fixed or mobile unit. The mobile version is the same size as a 67.3m3 container, which makes it easy to transport. It can be mobilised and mounted on di erent vessels. The mobile OPTS is integrated and mounted on the base frame, so it only needs to be secured on deck. The fixed OPTS is designed for permanent installation on avessel, meaning the base frame is not required and the hydraulic power unit (HPU) can be placed below deck.

With its innovative OPTS, Palfinger Marine introduces a new approach to transport both personnel and cargo of up to 1,000kg in a very cost-e ective manner.

Sverre Mowinckel-Nilsen, Head of Global Marine Sales Solution Management at Palfinger sums it up, “With the updated solution, Palfinger responds to the latest requirements of the o shore industry. The technology constitutes a new standard in terms of accuracy, multifunctionality, and – most importantly – safety for the operators.”

Palfinger at Nor-Shipping

With its innovative OPTS, Palfinger Marine introduces a new approach to transport both personnel and cargo of up to 1,000kg in a very cost-e ective manner. To take on the booming market of o shore transfer systems, the company acquired the system in 2021 and is now intensively working on an updated version with an improved design and enhanced functions. At Nor-Shipping 2023, which will take place in Oslo, Norway, from 6 to 9 June,

visitors will get an exclusive first glimpse of the new OPTS. The prototype is scheduled to be finished within the first quarter of 2024.

With around 1,000 leading companies of the maritime industry readying to showcase their latest innovations, NorShipping is one of the most important trade fairs for the European shipping market. “We can imagine no better place to present our latest innovation, the OPTS, than Nor-Shipping 2023 – the hotspot for global key decision makers in the maritime field. Above all, the trade show is the best place to exchange ideas with our customers and partners. This way, we can provide future-focused concepts and shape the future of the industry together”, adds MowinckelNilsen.

Experts in testing

This year, Liftal is celebrating its 25th anniversary. However, the considerable orderbook does not leave a lot of time to pay much attention to this milestone.

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF LIFTAL.

In 1998, Liftal started its activities in Vlissingen (North Sea Port area) as a full-service specialist in lifting technologies. “Apart from testing, inspecting, and certifying, we also install, maintain, repair, sell, and rent hoisting, lifting, and fall protection material, and throughout the years, we have been able to assist many customers”, Hans Hirdes, Business Manager of Liftal says. “This has resulted in a lot of expertise and recognition in particularly the maritime,

o shore, and nuclear industry in the Amsterdam to Dunkirk port range.”

Heavy Lift Test centre

Until 2021, the company operated from its head o ce in Vlissingen and workshops in Rilland and Temse (Belgium). In 2021, the company had the opportunity to acquire a facility in Schiedam, and apart from serving the market in many projects, the past two years have been marked by this

acquisition. “Our orderbook is quite full, and apart from this the acquisition of the Schiedam facilities resulted in a lot of additional work”, Mr Hirdes explains. “The new Schiedam location adds new services to our business and it enables us to broaden our existing activities in size. Just as in our other workshops, the Schiedam facility is fully equipped for the inspection, approval, and testing of all kinds of lifting and below the hook equipment. However, compared with >>

For testing, the Schiedam location now gives Liftal’s Test Centre four extra tensile test benches with a capacity up to 2,000t.

the other locations, the Schiedam testing equipment can test a much broader range as it has three horizontal tensile test benches with a capacity of up to 100, 300, and 900t, and a vertical one with a capacity of almost 2,000t. In Schiedam we have ample space available to give each of our activities a space of their own. This way, we have created three departments. A test centre for testing heavy lifting, hoisting and mooring equipment, a department for approving and certifying ‘standard’ above and below the hook lifting equipment, and a department where we check and repair large-size construction type lifting tools.”

Challenging

Mr Hirdes continues, “It is obvious that the Schiedam location was used to work according to the previous owner’s rules and procedures and for us it is important to make sure that this location also works according to our own company standards. Therefore, we had to make several changes in the Schiedam operation. This was challenging at times because the normal work for our customers continued. However, we took these challenges for granted as the changes were of utmost importance. For our customers, it should make no di erence whether a test or inspection is executed in whatever location. They may expect the level of quality that they are used to from us. Now that we are up and running, we can say that with our new Schiedam location and our existing facilities in Vlissingen and Temse, we can o er our customers a much broader range of services. And we are not done yet with improving Schiedam, a next step is that we have ordered data read-out and logging equipment on all test machines, which will enable us to registrate the tests and their results more easily and accurate. As automation and digitalisation becomes more important in our overall operation, the dataloggers will really be of added value for us and our customers as soon as this is improvement is complete according to plans in Q2 of this year.”

Load cells

Liftal has always been specialising in testing larger sizes of lifting equipment and taking care of complex assignments. Mr Hirdes elaborates, “Many of our customers can do a lot of testing themselves, but when things get

complicated, or in the case of larger or heavier equipment, they know where to find us. In the past, we often had to execute the tests of heavier and larger equipment outside, for example by means of using di erent types of cranes. Now with Schiedam, most of this heavy testing can be executed inside our own location, which is profitable for an optimal load test project management. Of course, when the facilities on our premises do not su ce, or on the request of our customers, we will always find a solution in other locations. It is good to know that the testing benches can be used for the calibration of even the largest loadcells as well. Together with the commonly known classification agencies, we o er this service to customers for used loadcells, however we are also often asked by manufacturers of loadcells to calibrate new ones before they are supplied to their customers, and with Schiedam we have been able to expand this service for larger sizes.”

Total solutions

Geographically, the acquisition also resulted in an addition to Liftal’s current working area. “To be able to act the way we like, fast and flexible, it is important to be as close as possible to our customers”, Mr Hirdes voices. “In Schiedam we are centrally located in between various newbuild, repair, and o shore yards. Many of them are existing customers, but it also o ers us a lot of potential to further expand our customer base. On the other hand, the additional facilities o ered in Schiedam are also useful for helping our customers with additional services in the other regions we are operating in.”

With the facilities in Schiedam, Liftal has further expanded its ability to act as

a full-service total solution provider. “Despite our extensive facilities it is not our goal to service the entire market,” Mr Hirdes says, “as we will mainly focus on the more complex one-of-a-kind projects. We are the experts in testing and approving equipment within the 120t to 2,000t range in which we o er total solutions. O ering complete project management solutions for test projects and using the innovative mindset from our team, we always strive for the best solutions for our customers.”

Future-proof hydrogen CSOVs

At the end of 2022, Windcat, Europe’s market-leading o shore personnel transfer company was pleased to announce an order for the construction of a series of hydrogen-powered Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (‘CSOVs’), with Damen Shipyards, a global provider of maritime solutions.

The ‘Elevation Series’ CSOVs have been designed by Damen Shipyards in cooperation with Windcat and CMB.TECH. The result is a revolutionary new design with increased capabilities and flexibility compared to existing vessels. The vessels are 87m long, 20m wide, can accommodate 120 people on board, and will be powered by hydrogen. The series will be delivered from 2025.

Combined experience and expertise

The CSOVs will be built at Ha Long Shipyard, Vietnam, and will be delivered to Windcat O shore, a new business unit within Windcat, which will focus on o shore energy commissioning and services. Initially, two vessels have been ordered with options for further vessels.

A CSOV is a vessel that remains in an o shore wind farm for an extended period of up to 30 days, providing maintenance materials and housing technicians in hotel-style accommodation. This logical next step in Windcat’s journey builds on Windcat’s 20 years of experience in the o shore renewable energy sector and follows four years of market and vessel design evaluation.

According to the jury, Van Oord’s introduction of the three vessels marks it as a trailblazer for international standards aimed at minimising climate and environmental impact within the available technological capabilities.

History and naming

Vox Apolonia is named after Apolonia Adriana van Oord-Visser. She was married to Jac G. van Oord, the founder of the Utrecht branch of the company. Apolonia was one of the first board members and the first woman to join the supervisory board. And even today,

the name Apolonia still runs in the Van Oord family. The vessel was christened by Polien Fijan-van Oord and Polianne van Oord. Two granddaughters of Apolonia who are named after her and who belong to the fourth generation of this family-owned company.

Largest Schottel EcoPeller shipped

The Schottel Group, with its headquarters in Spay/Rhine, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of steerable propulsion systems for ships and o shore applications.

Founded in 1921, the company has been developing and manufacturing azimuth propulsion and complete propulsion systems with power ratings of up to 30MW for vessels of all sizes and types, for more than 70 years. Around 100 sales and service locations worldwide ensure customer proximity.

More freedom in vessel design

The largest Schottel EcoPeller ever manufactured was recently shipped from the Wismar production facility. The five-bladed SRE 700 features a propeller diameter of 3,600mm and an input power of 3.2MW. Thanks to its compact design, the integrated LE-Drive (‘embedded L-Drive’) allows more freedom in vessel design. In addition to this, it o ers extremely low vibration and noise levels. The thruster’s controllable pitch propeller enables e ciency

increases by means of pitch adjustment. The delivered type also permits the fullfeathering function, enabling the propeller blades to be moved to a lowresistance position if required.

Sustainable all-rounder

Since its market launch, the SRE has been gaining use in almost all vessel segments. Thanks to the particularly e ective combination of powerful propeller thrust and lateral force, the SRE fulfils all the requirements of a modern high-performance propulsion unit. The hydrodynamically optimized design allows the thruster to produce maximum steering forces and enables top values in terms of overall e ciency and course keeping ability. This reduces fuel consumption and ensures both lower operating costs and emissions.
