The Bond Expert Reveals : Why Should We Take James Bond Seriously?

James Bond is so popular that he could become the ambassador of Britain. One would probably remember the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics, where The Queen made her acting debut opposite Daniel Craig in a spoof sequence. In fact, the last Bond film franchise, Skyfall, was the highest-grossing film of all time at the British box office, earning nearly £103 million.

There are a lot of academic studies being done on the different aspects of this popular character.

MARQUESS is honoured to speak to one of the major Bond experts, Professor James Chapman. His research focuses on the production contexts of the films and their relationship to the wider society and culture. The motifs include national identity, imperialism, class and gender. “I'm tempted to say that was THAT bikini as worn by Ursula Andress in Dr No has aroused my interest to study Bond!” the humourous Professor explains, “More seriously, I've always been a fan of the Bond films, and having seen them I read the Ian Fleming books when I was a teenager.”

J: Quite apart from what people may think of the quality of the films, the Bond series is the longestrunning and most popular series in the history of cinema.

M: How does James Bond relate to the British popular culture?

J: James Bond has been part of the British cultural landscape since 1953 – the year that the first novel, Casino Royale, was published – and has functioned as an indicator of changing ideological and cultural contexts for over 60 years. The Bond books and films have responded to changes in Britain's global status. Also, they have reflected changing attitudes towards gender and sexuality. For example, the women in the Bond films are now always characterised as being more “independent” than their predecessors in the 1960s, though I'd still say that their primary role seems to be to provide eye-candy for male viewers!

M: What are the most distinctive character traits of James Bond?

J: His patriotism and sense of duty, his conspicuous consumption, and his somewhat old-fashioned attitude towards gender relations – a dashing man.

M: Which Bond actor do you think is the closest to Ian Fleming's portrayal?

J: Timothy Dalton who played Bond in two films, The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, was the closest to the psychological make-up of Ian Fleming's James Bond. Dalton played Bond as someone who dislikes killing, especially in cold blood, but who accepts it is his job to do so, however unpalatable that may be.

Ask the Bond Scholar at a Filming Scene Unfortunately, we cannot speak to Ian Fleming, so who comes closest to understanding the James Bond character like the author did? We approached the reputable James Bond International Fan Club (www.007. info) which was established in 1979.

We met up with Mr Ajay Chowdhury, the London Spokesperson of the Fan Club, at Rules Restaurant in Covent Garden, which is a 2-minute walk from Bond in Motion Exhibtion. “One of Spectre's key scenes was shot both outside and inside of this famous restaurant.” According to source, 3 members of the M16 HQ team, Ralph Fiennes (“M”), Ben Whishaw (“Q”), and Naomie Harris (Miss Moneypenny), were all present for the sequence.

While guiding us through Bond In Motion, Ajay effortlessly pointed out the different scenes, recounting fun facts of each one of them. “The original registration of the DB5's car plate should be BMT 216A, but because of licence issues it had to be BMT 214A as shown now.” His excitement is contagious.

Interested in writing, Ajay was the editor of a James Bond journal called kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Ajay has been a Bond fan since he was 8. “I'm not an expert, I will call myself a Bond scholar. Getting to know James Bond is a constant journey and I'm still learning.” Being a lawyer is busy enough, but Ajay still spares time to do interviews with international journalists and Bond enthusiasts, he even carries out Bond-themed guided tours. “George Lazenby is the only actor who didn't want to act Bond because he wasn't attracted to vanity.” says Ajay who has interviewed a lot of the biggest names in making the Bond films.

This gentleman is set to launch his new book “Some Kind of Hero” this October. As the subhead hints, this book which is co-written with Mr Matthew Field tells the remarkable story of the James bond films. “It is based on over 100 new interviews, you will be fully entertained.” So, what sort of secrets we could find in this 700-page book? Omega New Bond-inspired Timepiece In anticipation of Spectre, Omega watch has released a new Bond timepiece. Over the past two decades, the world's favourite spy has adorned these classic luxury watches in the films. And the design for the latest edition Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M model, was inspired by the Bond family coat of arms.

This 41.5 mm stainless steel timepiece comprises many striking elements. For example, its oscillating weight has been cut and shaped to resemble a gun barrel, a design feature that is associated with James Bond. Another exciting design is that, the Bond family coat of arms is repeatedly interlocked to create a dynamic pattern on the watch’s blue PVD dial.

To commemorate this 007 film in 2015, this watch is produced in an edition limited to 15,007 pieces.

Also, the watch is resistant to magnetic fields greater than 15,007 gauss, powered by the completely new OMEGA Master Co-Axial calibre 8507.

Aston Martin DB10 in Spectre When James Bond drives an Aston Martin to embark on a mission, the two British icons always create some phenomenal scenes. In fact, Aston Martin has already made 11 appearances in Bond films. The luxury British sports car brand unveiled Bond's stunning new car, the Aston Martin DB10, together with EON Productions, the producers of the James Bond film franchise.

Aston Martin DB10 is a model developed specifically for the film and built in-house by the brand's design and engineering teams. The teams worked closely with the film’s director, Sam Mendes, to create the ultimate car for the world’s most famous spy.

“Can I purchase this Bond car?” Both the 007 and car fans maybe asking the same question.

Unfortunately, the production will be strictly limited to 10 cars which are not available to the public. However, the DB10 gives us a glimpse to the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins, according to the brand's announcement. So fans, be patient for a new model!

Half Century of Adventures with 007 2014 marked Aston Martin's 50-year relationship with 007. The story stretches back to Goldfinger (1964), the 3rd film in the James Bond series, in which the world saw the introduction of a new car for Bond – the Aston Martin DB5. This impactful silver car caused a tremendous amount of talk largely due to its tempting gadgets which were fitted to it: revolving number plates, tire slashers as well as the famous ejector seat. The James Bond effect in return saw sales of the DB5 increase and the profile of the company grow.

Over the years, the James Bond role has changed from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan. Since its first appearance in 1964, the DB5 reappeared in GoldenEye in 1995. The car was driven by Brosnan to the Monte Carlo Casino with a playful chase scene.

The younger generation of 007 fans will not be strange to Aston Martin DB5 too. The current Bond star Daniel Craig drove the DB5 in Casino Royale (2006) and Skyfall (2012). In the latter film, Bond drove M to his ancestral home, Skyfall Lodge, and used the vehicle's concealed weaponry to stage a defense of the building.

Sheffield Park : Capture Its Autumn Glory The Garden of Sheffield Park is a horticultural work of art formed through centuries of landscape design, with influences of Capability Brown and Humphry Repton. The historic Parkland forms a larger footprint for the Sheffield Park estate. Dating back several centuries, it has had many uses including a deer park and WWII camp, and is now grazed with livestock and home to the natural woodland play trail. This area has been transformed into a wildlife haven and is home to a diverse range of species including kingfishers, birds of prey, butterflies, and dragonflies.

Royal Warrants are granted by the Royal Family as a sign of commitment to the highest standards of service, quality and excellence. There are currently about 800 warrant holders throughout the UK. Only The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh or The Prince of Wales can grant Royal Warrants. Each of them can grant only one warrant to any individual business, but a business may hold warrants from more than one member of the Royal Family. In the late 18th century, Royal tradesmen began to display the Royal Arms on their premises and stationeries. But it was Queen Victoria who ensured that Royal Warrants gained the prestige they enjoy today.

A company must keep doing business with the Royal Household for at least 5 years to be considered on the warrant grant list. Then the company needs approval from the Lord Chamberlain, the head of the Royal Household and chairman of the Royal Household Tradesmen’s Warrants Committee. What Lies Beneath 007's Style Turnbull & Asser has been part of nearly every James Bond film since Dr. No in 1962. It was James Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming, who lined up the double-0 world with Turnbull & Asser because he himself was also their customer. Dr. No’s director, Terence Young, favoured the brand too, the Bond actor Sean Connery thus wore a custom-made Turnbull & Asser shirt. Since then, the brand's shirts, ties and cuffs were worn successively by Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. In other words, the brand has helped to define the Bond's lifestyle of elegance and style.

M: MARQUESS 《爵》 D: Dean Gomilsek-Cole, Head of Design, Turnbull & Asser 设计总监 M: As far as we know, the AW15 collection is partly inspired by a few movies, are the Bond movies among them?

D: To be honest the Bond films will always be a part of T&A history, but for this collection I deliberately didn't want to use Bond as an inspiration. Instead I used more obscure film references like A Dandy in Aspic and a couple of my favourites from the 1960s, like the Ipcress File (which starred one of our famous customers Sir Michael Caine) and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (incidentally the author of the book, John Le Carre, on which the film was based, was a customer of ours, and we actually worked on the wardrobe for the recent remake of the film). The look book we created for the collection has a story woven into it and each outfit is designed for a specific “character” in the collection.

M: So, is there any surprise for Bond fans among the collection?

D: There is one element of the collection that is definitely inspired by Bond. I took inspiration from

all the casino scenes in the various films and created a line of super exclusive smoking jackets, as part of the collection named “The Nocturnalist”. These are so exclusive, with the silk woven

in England and the jackets made in London, only around 4 pieces of each design will be available, with a small amount available for our bespoke customers.

M: Are you a James Bond fan?

D: Who isn't a James Bond fan? I grew up watching Connery and Moore, who remain my favourites, but all of the Bond actors have brought something new to the character. Daniel Craig is doing a great job at the moment, showing a darker and more vulnerable side to the character.

M: Would you like to design the outfits for the next 007 film? How would the idea and style be?

D: I would jump at the chance, but this in itself would be a full-time job. It would be more realistic that we would work with the wardrobe designers to create looks. My Bond designs might be a little too eccentric for a modern audience, I would like to travel back in time to the 1960s and work on the wardrobe. Lots of great dinner jackets, and sharp tailoring, definitely Deadly and Dandy.

M: There must be a lot of customers coming to the store to look for Bond's shirts and ties?

D: Yes, there are many people that travel to our stores from around the world to specifically come to see where the original shirts and ties came from. The Dr No shirt remains the most popular because of the famous Cocktail Cuff, it is the most instantly recognisable; the Casino Royale shirt we made for Daniel Craig is a contemporary favourite also and all the ties continue to sell well. One of our senior Bespoke staff even got the chance to be an extra in one of the films due to his help with the wardrobe.

M: Let's talk about another big fan of your brand – HRH Prince of Wales. Have you ever seen and talked to him in the store?

D: I have never had the pleasure of meeting HRH the Prince of Wales in person, only his valets. However we do often get comments and feedback about our shirts from him and it has influenced some of our fabric developments as we strive to reflect his environmental stance.

M: The Davies Street Store has been opened as part of the celebration of Turnbull's 130th anniversary, how would you describe the customer experience within it?

D: The store itself has been designed to show the future of the Brand. We worked very closely with a team of interior architects, who immersed themselves in the history of the Brand for about a year before they felt ready to tackle first our Mayfair Showroom and then felt confident enough to work on our new store concepts. We have used very traditional materials but in very modern ways. You can “smell” the history of the Brand but it is a forward looking store. Also, as this store is just a short distance from my studio you will probably find me in there most days!

M: Turnbull & Asser is a gentleman's world, do you agree? How could the Brand also amaze and inspire a female customer and to what extent?

D: It's amazing how many women we get into our stores, but usually they are there to advise their partners of fabric choices for bespoke shirts. By making perfectly fitting shirts or blouses, as we do for our male customers – this I feel is where we could engage with a female audience. I am also looking into creating more accessories for the female consumers. Some of the women I have spoken to love our pocket square designs, so I am thinking to enlarge them to create a collection of women's scarves.

This beautiful parasol styled Fulton with a gold frame and satin fabric for HM Queen Elizabeth II is made from a cream coloured luxurious satin fabric with waterproof coating, with a ruched hem and vintage engraved metal handle. Followers can look for “The Kensington Star in Cream” model if they would like to carry a similar umbrella.

Fulton is one out of the few 800 Royal Warrant holders with them in the UK. English Drinking Etiquette Bond’s signature drink — Martini, is a classic British gentleman’s drink that symbolizes high status and power. Your choice of drink (in public at least) is determined mainly by your sex and social class, with some age-related variations. And clutching your glass correctly is a custom that is just as important as basic table manners to the English. So while attending an event or a simple party there are some drinking etiquette rules you must observe: Guests are expected to wait for the host to serve them their drink; Begin your meal with an aperitif (pre-lunch or dinner drink) like the traditional chilled dry sherry to stimulate the appetite and prepare your palate for food; As you order for your meal, take note of the best wine to compliment your main course. After which you can take pleasure in a digestif to aid digestion.

If you are having white wine and champagne, you must always hold your glass or flute by the stem.

Contrary to popular belief, like white wine and champagne, the red wine glass should be held by the stem.

Not only does it keep your merlot or cabernet a little cooler than room temperature, it also prevents your fingers from leaving smudgy prints on the glass too.

At the end of dinner, a guest can propose the first toast as a way of thanking the host for bringing everyone together. You ask, should you sit or stand? Do what comes naturally. If toasts are made over pre-dinner drinks in the living room, the toaster may want to stand. At the dinner table, the toaster may remain seated if the group is fairly small. Although the host often stands as he delivers his toast, everyone else – including the person or persons being honoured – remains seated. The exception to this rule comes when the toaster requests the guests to“stand and raise their glasses”.

Remember, you need to be mindful of other guests so don’t pressure others to drink more than they want.

Much Like Red Wine, The Dry British Humour James bond films epitomize irony and heavy sarcasm which are the bedrock of British humour (or a lack of it). If it were pouring outside, the joke would be to comment on the lovely weather (an extremely stale English classic).

Conspiratorial witty jokes immersed in the everyday talk, but what makes it even more confusing is the delivery. Which more often than not always deadpan. You might find yourself in situations where you are completely bewildered by the elements of ridicule and self-mocking.

This could make you wonder whether it was harmless banter or a serious conversation that you were having with your British mate.

Some of the classic jokes have been inspired by the Royal Family are also quite common. One of the most famous phrases is,“we are not amused”adopted from Queen Victoria. And even if it is likely to be a myth that she said this, (as proof of this solely relies on Caroline Holland’s) it validates the odd things that encompass the British humour.

David Morris, the esteemed London jeweller, is one of the luxury brands that supplied fine jewels in the James Bond films. However, its role was made even more prominent as it is the only jeweller requested to exhibit at the Designing 007 – Fifty Years of Bond Style (2012).

Named after the founder David Morris himself, this prestigious British brand was established in 1962. The brand's jewels have been worn by a number of Bond girls, partly due to Mr Morris' friendship with his client Roger Moore, the 3rd James Bond actor, and Maurice Binder, the famous title designer who has worked on 14 James Bond films.

As early as 1971, David Morris jewellery was featured in Diamonds are Forever and later in The Man With The Golden Gun (1974). In 1997, actress Teri Hatcher was spotted wearing the brand's necklace and ring in Tomorrow Never Dies. This Diamond “Bond” Scoop necklace, a unique piece with over 25 carats of white diamonds (pictured left), was a roaring visual-turned-commercial success. David Morris were overwhelmed with comments and enquires about this necklace, resulting in the manufacture of different sizes which retailed at £140,000. After this huge success, the brand's jewelleries were worn by two Bond girls Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards in the same movie The World Is Not Enough.

AW15 Duke Leather Collection Alfred Dunhill occasionally provided accessories for Bond actors throughout the series of films. In Tomorrow Never Dies starring Pierce Brosnan (1997), 007 used the famous gold dunhill lighter which served as an explosive device; the actor also wore the brand's cufflinks in The World Is Not Enough (1999).

Speaking of lighter, the brand's AW15 Duke Leather bags comprise details influenced by dunhill's enriched archive. The engine turn detail on zip pulls is indeed featured on early dunhill lighters. A true reflection of the brand's DNA, a Duke bag was handcrafted by leather artisans in every stitch, crease and curve, and fashioned from double tanned French calfskin whose colour will improve with age. The Rome-based Italian jewellery designer Delfina Delettrez has opened her first UK boutique in Mount Street Mayfair, London in 2015. 意大利珠宝设计师戴尔菲娜．德里崔兹发迹于罗马，并于 2015 年在伦敦梅 费尔区开立她在英国的第一间精品店。 Her company Delfina Delettrez was founded in 2007. Since the inception of her brand, Delfina has developed a signature perspective using a wide range of material vocabulary, manifested in her original use of figurative surrealism and natural iconography including hands, eyes, bees, and lips.

Delettrez is the daughter of Fendi accessory director Silvia Venturini Fendi. Although she comes from a fashion-famous family, she has shrugged off any“daughter of ”allusions and has cut her own niche in the jewellery industry. Her designs are stocked in selected stores worldwide.

Delfina Delettrez is the youngest designer included in the permanent collection of fine jewellery at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, Louvre; her work has been part of the museum since October 2010.

Inspired the co-existing of materials and surfaces from matte to reflective, industrial to organic, the unexpected mix of metals and textures include polished stainless steel, satin brass, silver mirrors, fur and green faux malachite leather. And the walls will be lined in green mirrors, creating infinity effect.

They are made in marble which are truly inspired by Roman architecture, and also by Piranesi drawings. She had the chance to experiment by living and working in a city where still exist this art.

Sense of the Surreal Delettrez's latest work explores a more conceptual sense of the surreal: instead of adding, she now subtracts, viewing precious stones as self-sufficient in themselves and creating“phantom settings”which give the illusion of fine jewels floating around the body.

The unique aesthetic of Delettrez's work comes from the marriage of classical goldsmith techniques with innovative contemporary materials, progressing traditional Italian craftsmanship to create modern, futuristic jewels.

The Mulberry design team is fascinated by the old English houses and how they lived through the decades, changing and evolving with the ebbs and flow of times and fashions. This inspiration is woven into the Autumn / Winter 2015 collection.

“To Inspire the Future” Collection Mulberry has travelled on a journey from the iconic English architecture of the Georgian era to the printed wallpapers of the Arts and Craft movement, as they peel back the layers of the past in order to inspire the future.

This season, the design team is stepping into the enticing world of Georgian interiors, which are known for their elegance, lightness and stylish flair.

Epitomised by the Rococo and Neoclassical design elements in the work of architects such as Robert Adam and John Soames.

The exquisite and delicate cornicing, mouldings and white paintwork of grand Georgian homes influenced their bespoke Filigree motif, which is interpreted in silk-screen print, woven jacquard and embroidery. Material references from Georgian interiors also inspired them to emphasise a sense of touch, using tactile fabrics and sumptuous detailing to give the collection a rich, textural overture.

Passion for cooking Scotland-born chef Isaac McHale started his career as a fishmonger when he was a 14-year-old boy. When MARQUESS asked, "When and how did you discover your passion for cooking.” He answered, “I remember on my 9 years old birthday, the only present I wanted was to spend money on buying the ingredients to cook a banquet for all my friends. I watched cooking programmes on TV and read a lot of books. I made twice-cooked wood pigeon, rice with shrimps, bacon, water chestnut, and mustard greens with minced pork. I had the best day ever by cooking for my friends.”

From the smile he wears on his face while in the kitchen, you can feel he still feels this way even after all these years of cooking.

Inspirations from Celebrated Chefs Isaac McHale's cuisine reflects the experiences he has had, journeying through prestigious kitchens around the world.

Having completed an internship with famous British chef Tom Aikens, McHale desribes Aikens was the fastest chef he has ever met. He was and still is a machine. “He was wildly creative and I learned a lot in that kitchen, speed and discipline and rigour” he recalled.

He cherishes 6 years at two-Michelin-starred restaurant; The Ledbury, he says he learnt a lot, like learning to do something simple really well. “To listen to other people, and to think about the client.” And he continues to admit that he still asks Brett Graham for advice all the time.“Brett has always got a good point of view.”says McHale.

Working in well-known restaurant Noma notably moulded him. Isaac changed his perception of the kitchen and how it should work from there. Even when he goes back for dinner at Noma, he is reminded that the whole dining experience comes as a whole package, and in Noma, the overall experience is brilliant. This strong effect of his time at Noma has a prominently influenced things like his current cuisine, the preference of having organic ingredients and the plating art inspired by the idea of natural aesthetics.

The Signature Dishes In the dining room, guests can choose between a three and five course menu at lunchtime, a five course menu at dinner, and a nine course tasting menu is served at weekends, and all the courses are available with wine pairings. S: Coming into Autumn we will be working with lots of Game such as grouse and partridge. Wild mushrooms will be in abundance too!

M: What are your food memories in Autumn?

S: Another of my favourite Autumn ingredients are cobnuts, we have a couple of trees in the garden so I try to get some before the squirrels get them! A very simple dark treacle tart with cobnut ice cream is one of my favourite food memories and we often feature it on our lunch menu.

M: How do you and your team source the seasonal produces? And ensure that your guests only eat quality produce?

S: We talk with our suppliers daily to ensure that we always know what is at its best. We also choose our suppliers very carefully, we want to work with people that are as passionate about their products as we are about ours. If the ingredients are great and have been cared for all the way through their journey, then our job becomes simply to continue that level of care through the preparation, cooking and serving.

M: Apart from the new menu, can you describe a few of the restaurant’s signature dishes?

S: We have a dish of very lightly cooked langoustine served with prawn tortellini, coastal vegetables and a consommé made from the roasted shells. We also have a caramel chocolate délice which we serve this with a malt crumb and a stout ice cream. This is a rich dessert that I love because my favourite flavours with chocolate are smooth toasty caramel and that's what we deliver here.

M: With Michel Roux Jr being the consultant and you being the Head Chef, how do you work together?

S: I run the kitchen on a day to day basis, I create the menus, build and manage the team, while Chef Michel gives guidance, support and ensures that we are delivering a product worthy of the Roux name.

M: Do you think the “Michelin-starred chef ” and the “Masterchef winner” effects appeal to customers a lot?

S: People will have confidence in us to deliver high standard because of the Roux name, the expectations are high so I think that it is appealing. The Masterchef winner thing was a big appeal at the time of the show and for a little while after, but I think it's not as much now.

GOURMET DINING 佳肴荟萃 M: Speaking of customers, how do you embrace customer feedback? And how do you respond to comments made by guests?

S: We quite often have guests that want to come and have a look around the kitchen and meet the team, that's great to get the feedback. We are always looking for feedback so that we can improve ourselves. It may not always come as directly as one of the guests saying something. For example, I always watch the plates coming back into the kitchen as well as going out because clean plates coming back in are a good indication that we are getting it right. With social media and sites like Tripadvisor, we gather even more feedback. We don't over react to criticism or praise, we just use it constructively to improve our product.

M: After all, what are the ups and downs being a Head Chef in a famous restaurant?

S: The ups are that I take a huge amount of pride in working in a Roux restaurant and being trusted by Chef Michel and Chef Albert to deliver something that they feel is up to their exacting standards. The downside, if you can call it that, would be the pressure to deliver that standard day in day out, though that pressure is what makes us push ourselves so hard to improve, so it's not really a negative thing at all.

400th Anniversary of Shakespeare's Death There'll be plenty of Shakespeare around next year to mark the 400th anniversary of his death. The 2016 Glyndebourne Festival will be no exception, with two of its six operas derived from his works: Béatrice et Bénédict by Berlioz adapted from Much Ado About Nothing, and Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

This year's opening night film “Suffragette”– is the first feature film that tells the story of ordinary British women who risked everything fighting for equality and the right to vote.

Bejewelled Treasures: The Al Thani Collection As part of the V&A India Festival, Bejewelled Treasures: The Al Thani Collection will present around 100 spectacular objects from or inspired by the jewellery traditions of the Indian subcontinent. Drawn from a single private collection, it will showcase magnificent precious stones of the kind collected by Mughal Emperors in the 17th century and exquisite objects used in royal ceremonies. It will also reveal the influence of India on jewellery made by leading European houses in the early 20th century and display contemporary pieces with an Indian theme made by modern masters.

The exhibition will be arranged in sections exploring different elements of evolving styles and techniques.

Highlights include an Indian turban jewel made for the Maharaja of Nawanagar set with large diamonds; magnificent unmounted precious stones including a Golconda diamond given to Queen Charlotte by the Nawab of Arcot, South India in 1767; Mughal jades such as a jade-hilted dagger that belonged to the 17th century emperor Shah Jahan who built the Taj Mahal; and renowned jewels from the early 20th century

Since 1862, Sandringham has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs, and it is the much-loved country retreat of Her Majesty The Queen. Besides, the late Princess Diana was born in a cottage located in the estate’s extensive grounds.

Sandringham house is probably the most famous stately home in Norfolk situated at the heart of the 8,000-hectare Sandringham Estate, of which 240 hectares is the woodland and heath of the Country Park. It is open to the public free admission every day of the year.

Arundells, in a beautiful setting in the shadow of the famous spire of Salisbury Cathedral, is the former home of the late Sir Edward Heath, the British Prime Minister who established full diplomatic relations with China in 1972. It is increasingly a focus for the Sino-British relationship and some of the exhibits bear witness to the important role Sir Edward played in that relationship. It is the only home of a Prime Minister which remains as it was when he was alive. It is open to the public.

Heath was the first Conservative Prime Minister to come from an ordinary background. Hall with Display As we walked into the house we are greeted by the impressive hall with display cabinet featuring models of some of Sir Edward’s prized boats, all names Morning Cloud, which Sir Edward has famously sailed.

Morning Cloud was the name given by Sir Edward Heath to a series of 5 yachts which he owned between 1969 and 1983. Moreover, the guide told us the stories behind Sir Edward’s sailing and how he only took up the sport at the age of 50 but still went on to win numerous major sailing races with his crew.

Drawing Room We were then led into the drawing room in which there is a Steinway grand piano. The walls are adorned with some beautiful paintings and the piano and side tables have photographs of some of the famous people Sir Edward has met and the famous politicians he has worked under, such as the photos he has taken with former Chinese President Mao Ze-Dong and Deng XiaoPing.

The room has a unique collection of artefacts reflecting the former Prime Minister’s passion for arts and his achievements in music, sailing and politics.

Chinese Wallpaper On display around the staircase are 4 hand-painted wallpaper depictions, reproducing scenes from the legend of the Monkey King God, Sun Wu-Kong. As we can see, the four wall scenes related to the Monkey King getting into heaven by tricking (drugging) and fighting guards in sequence. After 20 years of hanging in the staircase the colours of paint remain remarkably vivid. The wallpaper was a gift from two of Sir Edward's former Private Secretaries, Richard Burn and Peter Batey, who worked in Beijing then.

The library (Japanese Room) are filled with Sir Edward’s extensive collections of music and art books as well as his massive music collection.

Actually Sir Edward Heath spent most of his time in this room where he received guests and listened to his favourite music. He would sit on his favourite chair, which he referred as his “Tea Pot Chair”, reading 6 or more daily papers. Besides, this was one of Sir Edward’s favourite rooms of the house as a private place to escape from the daily politics.

An exhibition shall be taking place at the house. Photographs and costumes shall be available for visitors to enjoy and revisit scenes from the film. 正值庆贺《理智与情感》电影 20 周年之际，蒙佩森宅邸摇身一变回到 1995 年，拍摄场景设定为电影角色詹宁斯太太于伦敦伯克利广场的私 宅。宅邸内还设立特展，提供旅客游历电影场景与主角服装的相关展示。

Sense and Sensibility is a novel written by Jane Austen, and was her first published work when it appeared in 1811 under the pseudonym “A Lady”. The backdrop of Sense and Sensibility is set in England, London and Kent between 1792 and 1797. Its story portrayed mainly the life and love story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne.

In 1995, Taiwanese director Ang Lee started his first English film with Sense and Sensibility. It was based on Jane Austen's 1811 novel using the same name. An Elegant and Very Special Town House The visit to Mompesson House instantly takes you back to the early 18th century. The 1995 Lee Ang version of Sense and Sensibility which starred Kate Winslet was filmed here. The elegant and spacious home transports you into the past and the films fans get a chance to relieve the movie scenes.

As we walked through Chorister's Green, the Salisbury Cathedral spire stood behind us. Mompesson House is a perfect Queen Anne town house which has undergone little changes until now. It still has a limestone façade, symmetrical windows and elegant wrought-iron railings.

As we passed through the original wrought iron gates and entered the carved stone doorway, the interior featured beautiful mid-18th-century plasterwork, a marble chimneyplace and light airy rooms. All the rooms are decorated as they might have been in the 1700s, except the Library which is 1950s.

Situated in the West End, Mayfair is close to the heart of the capital’s cultural, shopping and entertainment district and many of the major visitor and tourist attractions.

Mayfair takes its name from the fortnight-long May Fair that took place between 1686 and 1764.
