Three Sides to a Triangle
NEW WEEKLY YOUTH WRITING CONTEST
By Rev. Don Abernathy
At Attention News we are blessed to meet and work with numerous charities that focus on a specific area of need. Through our interaction with these groups, we see firsthand how these organizations truly affect our community. One such group is Havenly Blue. We met Founders Priscilla and Yasmin at a march against child abuse last year. Their passion and drive to save children is truly remarkable. While we have come so far as a country with so much to be proud of, but for some reason we still can’t find a way to protect our children from predators and abusers. Havenly Blue’s focus is to be a voice for abused children everywhere that cry in the darkness and think no one cares. This is a tough subject that most people don’t want to discuss, even when it happened to them. Havenly Blue is shining a light on this very dark subject and fighting for children everywhere. Recently, Havenly Blue received a donation of a new butterfly logo. This is appropriate as Priscilla refers to lost children as fallen butterflies. She met Los Alamitos High School art teacher Karissa Ferrell and together they worked with the high school to get approval for a first ever Fallen Butterfly Project. The basic program is art students used metal to make jewelry with the Fallen Butterfly logo but the results were far from basic. I was fortunate to be invited to the unveiling of this program. Art teacher Mrs. Ferrell isn’t teaching her students how to make jewelry; she is teaching them old school ways to bring metal to life with old fashioned tools and their hands. Students told me how they used hack saws, drills, hammers and buffing pads to bring beauty out of raw metal. They hammered rivets into drilled holes attaching different types of metals for unique looks. They weren’t given patterns

or specific instructions on what to make, only told to incorporate the Fallen Butterfly into the jewelry they felt was hidden in the raw metal. These proud students really got the message of the Fallen Butterfly and brought pieces of copper, aluminum and stainless steel to life in the form of ear rings, necklaces, and bracelets. With the help of DW Ferrell, the jewelry is being auctioned on havenly.teachart.org through March 11. The proceeds are being split 3 ways, just like a triangle. The Los Alamitos High School Art Department is receiving 1/3 of the funds, 1/3 of the funds go to Havenly Blue and the final 1/3 is for the awesome student artist. While much needed funds are being raised for all 3 groups involved, to me, this project is so much more than a fund raiser. I saw students proud to help children they don’t know show their parents what they made with a sparkle in their eye. I saw parents amazed at the sheer talent Mrs. Ferrell was able to tap into and draw out of their children. I saw a high school teacher care so much that I almost wanted to be a student again…almost. Please support this wonderful project and visit havenly.teachart.org to view a brief video and bid on amazing one of a kind jewelry handmade with love from a child’s heart.

Criminals are always looking for the next hot thing to steal and cash in. The height of home foreclosures and home abandonment also saw the height of scrap metal including copper and wire. This led to the theft of copper pipes and wires in the empty houses by thieving recyclers. This is still an issue but our politicians passed laws requiring valid identification, the mailing of checks rather than dispersing of cash and a 3 day waiting period. That hasn’t stopped the theft of copper and metal, but it has reduced the casual thief. Now they are looking for something new that is easy to steal and sell. In the last issue we wrote about the increase in auto theft which can directly be related to the amount of criminals being dumped on our streets. But stealing a complete vehicle requires a little bit of skill. So what is easier than stealing a complete vehicle? How about a valuable piece of the vehicle that is made with a quick release? I’m referring to the pickup truck tailgates. Having owned numerous trucks; I can attest to the fact that all the tailgates are made to be removed in seconds. Depending on the truck year and make, new aftermarket tailgates can be found for $150$1,500 plus paint. The new replacement cost for factory tailgates is a lot higher at $1,000 to $3,500 plus paint. With more new trucks having back up sensors and cameras in the tailgates, their replacement cost could easily reach $5,000. In working on this article someone said to me, “I don’t own a truck so why do I care?” Well we all need to care because every one of us pays for the theft in a couple of different ways. First, insurance deductible run from $250-$1,000. For a lot of truck owners it’s a lot easier to file an insurance claim and pay the deductible than outright buy and paint a new tailgate. Increases in insurance claims leads to increases in insurance rates for everyone. Second, new and used auto dealers are being hit by tailgate thieves because of the volume of trucks lined up on their lots. Yes they also file claims with their insurance companies which can cause their own premiums to increase. As a precaution, some are hiring more security or putting up cameras which have a cost. Plus they
new tailgate. That cost is added into their bottom line and spread out across all the customers that walk onto their lot regardless of the type of vehicle they buy. A report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau released February 2013 stated tailgate theft had shown an 18% increase from 2011 to 2012. Texas was the hardest hit state, mainly because they have the most trucks, but California held a strong second place. With the increases we’ve seen in tailgate theft over the past few months, I expect 2013 will also see a significant increase over 2012. So what do we do when tailgates are made to be removed quick and easy? The internet is full of anti-tailgate theft devices but the best deterrence is quick, simple and cheap. The key word here is deterrence. The only 100% sure way to prevent your tailgate from being stolen is to weld it shut or take it with you when you leave your truck; neither is very practical. Keep in mind thieves want to steal and be gone as quick as possible. If you make your tailgate difficult to steal, chances are they aren’t going to fight with it; they will just go to the next truck. My suggestion is a hose clamp on both sides of the tailgate rotating arms.
Installing them like the picture shows will not affect the functionality of the tailgate and you can still remove them if you need to remove your tailgate. If you have a truck, stop by your local hardware store and spend $3 on 2 hose clamps to secure your tailgate. If you don’t have a truck but know someone who does, stop by the hardware store and spend $3 to buy them 2 hose clamps. It’s a gift that shows you care and may be worth its weight in gold when you need to find a friend with a truck to move your new couch

Two Men Sentenced on Federal Hate Crime Charges Resulting from 2012 New Year’s Eve Attack The Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced that two Latino men associated with the Compton 155 street gang were sentenced February 10, 2014 by U.S. District Judge Terry J. Hatter, Jr. for their racially motivated attack on African-American juveniles at a residence in Compton, California, on December 31, 2012. Jeffrey Aguilar, also known as Terco, 19, and Efren Marquez, Jr., also known as Stretch and Junior, 21, were each sentenced to serve 21 months in prison, along with three years of supervised release. On October 17, 2013, both defendants
pleaded guilty to violating the Matthew Shepard-James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crime Prevention Act after admitting their involvement in the assault. Aguilar and another individual physically attacked a 17-year-old African-American who was walking down a street in the city of Compton. Aguilar chased down and struck the victim in the head with a metal pipe. During the incident, Marquez threatened to shoot another AfricanAmerican juvenile who was present. Both Aguilar and Marquez admitted that the attack on the 17-year-old victim was motivated by the race and color of the victim.
“Despite the substantial progress made, violent acts of hate committed because of someone’s race continue to occur to this day, and the department will continue to use every available tool to identify and prosecute hate crimes whenever and wherever they occur,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Jocelyn Samuels for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “Hate based crimes have no place in America,” said U.S. Attorney André Birotte, Jr. for the Central District of California. “The defendants’ attempt to rid their neighborhood of AfricanAmericans serves as a sickening reminder that racial intolerance
still exists in some segments of our community. For this egregious conduct, the defendants have received welldeserved prison terms.”

Suggested Meeting Formats General Info
The information on the ASCA12step.org web site is meant to be suggestive only. Although everything you’ll find here has a basis in our own considerable experience, there’s nothing hard and fast in ASCAA that demand following any specific set of pre-defined “rules.” Each group and meeting is free to modify the meeting formats to fulfill its needs, some of which may change as the group grows in membership and becomes more unwieldy in size. For example, it might be desirable to launch a new meeting as an hour long event in a private space, but change to 90 minutes in a public venue once an enthusiastic membership grows around them. A decision like this is simple enough, and is based on the needs of the group, not the individual member. “Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon ASCAA unity.” If one is looking for direction about how something should be done, we suggest turning to the 12 Traditions, as these are our most deliberate guidelines. Generally speaking, decisions that effect the group are made at a “Business Meeting” and are a matter of what we call the “group conscience.” As the 2nd Tradition states, “Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.” Because ASCAA uses a spiritual approach to recovery, prayers are occasionally used within the meeting, often to open and close. The one most typically used to open with is the “Serenity Prayer,” and many groups close a meeting by holding hands and reciting the “Lord’s Prayer” (or they might repeat the “Serenity Prayer”). The secretary will sometimes ask a member to read the 12 Steps and / or 12 Traditions at the top of a meeting, by way of reminding the group of ASCAA’s process and

purpose. Any announcements are made, especially as related to the behavior expected during the meeting (no smoking, parking regulations, the need for volunteers to help clean up after the meeting, etc). Many groups will decide to have a rule against “crosstalk” (people responding directly to what someone else has shared) and most will remind the members that anonymity is the spiritual foundation of our recovery so that “What you hear here, let it stay here.” Members never “out” each other in public. At some point during the meeting the secretary will announce that every ASCAA group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions. A basket, hat or can will be passed through the membership for individual donations, and collected by the treasurer who will be responsible for keeping track of these contributions, and for paying any group bills. Typically ASCAA meetings are very cheap to run, the biggest expenses being any room rental and refreshments, along with any small miscellaneous expenses (like literature or photocopying costs). The treasurer’s accounts of finances should be available at any time. NOTE: Although brand new meetings can be established by any two ASCAA members in a private space (such as one’s home) any group with a growing membership should generally seek a public space where meetings can be held. ASCAA’s not a secret society, and has but one primary purpose -- to carry its message to the adult survivor of child abuse who still suffers. The only requirement for ASCAA membership is a desire to recover and heal from childhood abuse and trauma.
OPEN vs CLOSED Meetings
The concept of an OPEN meeting is that the general public would be welcome to attend and even participate. Since this is an obvious opportunity for members to be recognized and known outside the privacy of the group, most groups hold CLOSED meetings where all in attendance must identify as having suffered from child abuse and trauma. Speaker Meetings Perhaps the most simple of all meeting formats is that where there’s a featured speaker. This is a person who has been asked in advance to share his / her experience strength and hope to the membership. Usually the

SURVIVOR: Lifestyles of Gangs and Crimes
Don’t forget where you come from! By: Michelle Mataese
Growing up in the projects left an impression on my outlook at life that affects me even today. The neighborhood kids flocked together and did everything that was known to be fun, together! I believe that a person can inherit many characteristics based on the environment they were or are raised in. This theory is actually one that I fought within myself about for years and have came to certain terms of it in
ASCAA secretary is responsible for scheduling a speaker who’ll talk about what their youth was like, what happened in their adulthood and what its like now that they’re in recovery. He or she will often share for half the meeting, at which time there would be an invitation for sharing of three to five minutes from the membership. They’ll raise their hands and be called on one at a time. The secretary is responsible for keeping the sharing on track and for not allow anyone to speak too long.
Sharing Meetings
Sharing or “regular” meetings are typically the most often used formats. After the readings and announcements the secretary might call on an individual to share whatever’s on his or her mind for perhaps 10 minutes. This can often present a thread that other members will identify with. They’ll raise their hands to be called on to share their own thoughts for three to five minutes. When appropriate the secretary will let the group know time is running out and will bring the meeting to a close. Many secretaries will try to make sure anyone with a “burning desire” (deeply felt need to share) will be included.
Topic Meetings
At the typical Topic Meeting its understood that a specific topic, concept, issue or situation will be the focus of all the sharing. Topics can derive from a reading from 12 Step literature or can arise from a suggestion that comes from the membership. The secretary is responsible for keeping the meeting appropriately “on topic.” As usual, the secretary will also track when the group is running out of time and bring the meeting to a close.
Issue 13 works.
Book Study
The “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous is considered by many in that fellowship as the “how to” manual for a new design for living. In fact, the first 164 pages have never been changed since the original printing in the late 1930s. A lot of groups start at the beginning of the book and read a section at a time to begin a meeting. When the meeting starts, they frequently pass a copy of the book between members, one after another, and individuals read a paragraph or two at a time. When appropriate the secretary stops the reading and moves the group to the sharing part of the Book Study, inviting members to relate their experience, strength and hope on that Step.
Cross-talk Meetings
A so-called “Cross-talk Meeting” is a format that usually should not be tried unless there’s a significant amount of recovery already present in the group. That’s because, unlike almost all other meeting types, members are encouraged to directly address issues that have been shared by other members. They are also allowed to share more than once in each meeting, although the secretary must make sure no one person over-dominates the time. Cross-talk Meetings, which are always “Closed” meetings, are not recommended unless and until a group feels it has a thick enough skin and enough healing among its membership to not take sharing that addresses their issues too personally.
Business Meetings
Many groups periodically hold what’s referred to as a “Business Meeting” immediately following the conclusion of one of their larger regularly scheduled meetings, often once a month. They are used to discuss group issues such as finances and elections of new officers, and to allow all the members to help make Step / Tradition Study decisions based on the “group conscience” (majority The typical Step Study meeting provides an opportunity vote). our present day. Every unconventional act or way about us, does not necessarily mean the kid is a nuisance or the famous “Just plain crazy” term.
I felt liberated already to drop the weakest component in my life at the time and hold on to what I believed to be the survivor tools.
My childhood set somewhat a precedence for me in the present day, it is quite refreshing to have the ability to survive. I realized that one of the things I regretted in life was when I dropped out of college in my first semester. I can give many reasons to justify why I dropped out of school, but I used them all up in my twenties. The honest truth is that out of education, gangs, and crimes; I chose education to be the thing that I could live without! SAD! STUPID! SERIOUSLY ILL! I can go on about how long the effects of that one decision tortured my existence, but I will stay positive and focus on the silver lining of it all.
I wanted to believe that if I started paying bills and used my drug money to be responsible, for once, it would justify the path I chose. I kept a day job to cover my re-up (investment) money. I worked in the daytime as a temp, worked off my pager for my real job (pusher) around the clock, and I was a legitimate gang member from the moment I awoke until the time I went to sleep (My Everything).
First year college students, right out of high school, have a surge of liberation they feel; a need to be on their own. When I entered college, I was a gangbanger. I was a drug dealer and I was not sleeping in my own bed anymore! I was not living at home with my parents, I was living independently with a friend at the time; so it is safe to say I had the reversal first year college experience!
It was exhausting for me to live in such a way, but, I believed that if I worked hard enough in my corrupted life it will get me to where I really want to go. I wanted to earn enough money to get out of the lifestyle I was in, but not necessarily get out of the neighborhood. I wanted to get somewhere in life and feel like I am someone, but stay in my surroundings because it was the only place I felt safe at the time.
I made a decision to drop school, because I believed that if I went to school or went to the military (as my mother planned for me) I would have forgotten where I come from. I did not hang out with the brightest bunch growing up, because as my mom always pointed out to me; “You are all idiots, Michelle!”. As a teenager my friends were the world to me, I believed them over my own parents, and I took their word for whatever they said. I took not only their word, but their lifestyles for what it was worth to me. My friends were getting pregnant by boys in the hood, others were living in common law marriages, some started smoking drugs, and some just had no where else to go so they stayed in the streets of the neighborhood; exploiting myself to find the fit for my life was left for me.
Everyone knows the saying “Never forget where you come from”, right? The meaning of this saying is what slowly progressed my journey back to it’s rightful course! I was left That always is the plan for all of us without kids and I didn’t really have that suffer with the two-time loser complex. Though we may not make it a boyfriend, my gang and my deals the first, second, or even the third time became my common law marriage. out...WE WILL GET OUT eventually! Many of my homies would always mutter the words of

Wanted Remorseful Sex Offender The pages in Attention! with photographs of Sexual Offender Violators receive the most reaction from sex offenders and the community. The communications most frequently received are from offenders wanting to know how to get their image out of our paper before their family, friends and co-workers see them. The process is simple; they need to follow the law and register with their local police department. Once we verify registration through the Department of Justice, we remove them from our data base and discard their information. The callers are all ashamed, embarrassed, or just trying to hide their past. All we care about is that they follow the rules of their release by registering with their local police.

Protecting Aircraft from Lasers New FBI Program Offers up to $10,000 Reward On Tuesday February 11, 2014, the FBI announced a program aimed at deterring people from pointing lasers at aircraft—a felony punishable by five years in jail—and rewarding those who come forward with information about individuals who engage in this dangerous activity. “Aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft is a serious matter and a violation of federal law,” said Ron Hosko, assistant director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division. “It is important that people understand that this is a criminal act with potentially deadly repercussions.” The new initiative—which includes a campaign to educate the public about the dangers of “lasing”—will run for 60 days in 12 FBI field offices where laser strikes against aircraft are prevalent. A key part of the program is reward money: The Bureau will offer up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of any individual who intentionally aims a laser at an aircraft. “Laser pointers are legal and certainly have legitimate uses,” said George Johnson, a federal air marshal who serves as a liaison officer with the Bureau on laser issues. “Used in the wrong environment, however, they can be very dangerous.” When aimed at an aircraft from the ground, the powerful beam of light from a handheld laser can travel more than a mile and illuminate a cockpit, disorienting and temporarily blinding pilots. Those who have been subject to such attacks have described them as the equivalent of a camera flash going off in a pitch black car at night. Since the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began tracking laser strikes in 2005, there has been a more than 1,000 percent increase in the number of incidents with these devices, which can be purchased in stores or online for as little as a few dollars. Last year, 3,960 laser strikes against aircraft were reported—an average of almost 11 incidents per day. And it’s estimated that thousands of attacks go unreported every year.
“We hope that more public awareness about this issue will lower the instances of laser strikes,” Johnson said. “We also want to encourage people to come forward when they see someone committing this felony—one that could have terrible consequences for pilots and their passengers.” As of December 2013, the FAA has documented at least 35 incidents where pilots required medical attention after a laser strike. Interfering with the operation of an aircraft has long been a federal crime, but the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 specifically made it a federal felony to knowingly point the beam of a laser at an aircraft. The new law lowered the threshold for prosecution, Johnson said, “and the trend is on the rise for jail time in these cases.” Last month, for example, a 23-year-old California man was sentenced to 21 months in prison for aiming a laser pointer at a Fresno County Sheriff ’s Office helicopter. Court records showed that the man deliberately tracked and struck the aircraft. The 12 FBI offices participating in the new program are Albuquerque, Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Juan, and the Washington Field Office. If you have information about a lasing incident or see someone pointing a laser at an aircraft, call your local FBI office or dial 911.
In 2013, 3,960 laser strikes against aircraft were reported. That is over 10 per day!
Voters Might get Chance to Revise Flawed California Death Penalty By Rev. Don Abernathy
How effective is the California Death Penalty? Many would say not very effective since California has not had an execution since 2006. Currently a petition is making the rounds to get 800,000 signatures to get a proposal on the ballot to fix our flawed death penalty system. Three former governors recently signed the petition aimed at putting an initiative before voters in November designed to end lengthy delays in California executions, but a death-penalty opponent called the proposal “deeply flawed.” Former Govs. Gray Davis, Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian were among those attending a Los Angeles news conference supporting the proposal, which would shorten the length of the appeals process and require death-row inmates to share cells with other inmates -- a move supporters say would save millions of dollars. Currently, death row inmates have private cells and benefits that give them a better quality of life than standard inmates. “All three governors believe strongly that there should be a death penalty for the most heinous crimes in this state,” Davis said. “Families wait too long to finally get to that point where somebody's life is going to be taken for the crimes they have committed,” San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos said. A perfect example of our flawed system is The Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez. Ramirez was captured by citizens protecting their neighborhood. He never expressed any remorse for the dozens of murders, rapes and burglaries he committed in California. However after being sentenced to death, he spent 23 comfortable years on death row losing 13 appeals. When Ramirez died of natural causes, had open appeals in the court system. With our current appeals process, estimate say Ramirez would have been in his 70’s when all appeals possibilities had been exhausted. The 1988 Ramierz trial was the most expensive trial in the history of California costing
taxpayers $1.5 million. His 23 years on death row cost California taxpayers another $2 million. Ramirez had no respect for his victims, the legal system or the tax paying citizens of California. Upon his conviction, Ramirez said, “Big deal. Death always went with the territory. See you in Disneyland.” Taxpayers picked up the tab for 23 years of his Disneyland. Former professional football player Kermit Alexander, whose mother, sister and two nephews were killed in a 1984 home-invasion robbery in South Los Angeles, was also among those backing the initiative. “My family was murdered brutally,” he said, noting that his relatives were killed “in a wrongful death situation because apparently the murderer couldn't read the right address and went to the wrong house.” “We've been waiting over 30 years for justice,” he said. Matt Cherry, executive director of Death Penalty Focus, said the initiative is misguided. “This deeply flawed initiative is full of legal and practical problems, and will only increase litigation and costs,” he said. “No matter what anyone might say, California's death penalty has repeatedly proven to be broken beyond repair. Instead of increasing the risk of executing innocent people and adding even more costs, we need to replace the dysfunctional death penalty system with life in prison without the possibility of parole. One fact that can not be denied is currently, life without parole is less expensive for the taxpayers than death. But that is only due to a flawed system with numerous loopholes. A sentence of death would be less expensive if the sentence was actually carried out. There was no doubt of Richard Ramirez’s guilt. He treated our legal system as a joke. He was correct, it is a joke. He was guilty, as are so may others that enjoy life on death row with taxpayers picking up the tab. When will taxpayers get what they voted and paid for....the carrying out of the death penalty?

Two Found Guilty of Murdering U.S. Coast Guard, a Redondo Beach Resident By Penny Arévalo Redondobeach.patch. com Terrell Horne III, based out of Marina Del Rey, was thrown into the water when a smuggling boat rammed into his search boat 30 miles off of Malibu. Two Mexican nationals were convicted today in the death of a Marina del Rey-based U.S. Coast Guard chief petty officer, who was thrown into the ocean when the search boat he was aboard was rammed by a smuggling boat near the Channel Islands. A federal jury in Los Angeles convicted Jose Meija-Leyva, 42, of second-degree murder, two counts of failure to heave to -- an order to stop a vessel so a federal law enforcement officer may board -- and four counts of assaulting federal officers with a deadly and dangerous weapon. Manuel Beltran-Higuera, 44, also was convicted in the two counts of failure to heave to -- as an accessory after the fact in one count and as an aider and abettor in the second count -- and in the four counts of assault, as an accessory after the fact. Meija-Leyva faces a possible life sentence in federal prison and BeltranHiguera faces up to 60 years behind bars. Sentencing is set for May 12.
sion of this case provides some level of comfort and closure to his loved ones,” Papp said. The Coast Guard will continue to honor the legacy Senior Chief Horne and his selfless service to our nation.” Horne was struck in the head on Dec. 2, 2012, by a boat propeller when he was thrown into the water. Another USCG member -- who was not identified -- suffered a non-life-threatening knee laceration. Horne, a 14-year Coast Guard veteran, left behind a young son and a pregnant wife. He and the other injured Coast Guard member were assigned to the USCG Cutter Halibut, based in Marina del Rey. Coast Guard spokesman Adam T. Eggers said at the time that the boat that struck the Coast Guard vessel was a “Mexican-style panga’” traveling at a “high rate of speed.” Customs and Border Patrol and Coast Guard ships were able to chase the panga after the apparent ramming and arrested the two suspects.
it headed toward the Channel Islands without lights about 1 a.m. The Halibut was sent to Santa Cruz Island, and had arrested two people from one boat. The Halibut crew lowered a small, inflatable chase boat into the water, and the small federal craft activated its blue lights and siren. At that point, the panga’s captain changed direction and drove into the small boat. According to federal prosecutors, a Coast Guard officer on the boat fired several shots at the panga boat while another USCG member tried to steer to federal vessel out of the panga’s path. Horne and the other Coast Guard member were thrown into the water and were immediately picked up by another federal boat. Horne was taken roughly 15 to 20 miles to the nearest dock, at Port Hueneme, where he was pronounced dead.
“We are pleased with the verdict and that those responsible for Senior Chief Horne’s death will be held accountable,” said Adm. Robert J. Papp Jr., commandant of the Coast Guard.

Educator Admits Sex Crimes to Police By Lee Brown Crimevoice.com
RIVERSIDE – Sex crimes that were committed by a former assistant principal spread into San Bernardino County, investigators reported on Tuesday. Andrea Michelle Cardosa, 40, admitted to authorities, admitting “to having a sexual relationship” several years ago with a teenager who was likely as young as 14-years-old. On Monday, Cardosa was arrested and charged with 16 felony counts of aggravated sexual assault and lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. The case involves two victims. One of Cardosa’s accusers publicly related in a YouTube video Cardosa’s confession that she molested the former student, Jamie Carrillo. Cardosa, who was an educator in both Riverside and Los Angeles counties, was interviewed by police after the victim posted secret recordings that were placed on YouTube. Cardosa admitted to investigators that the sexual occurrences took place in Riverside and Perris and continued when the victim moved to Victorville and Hesperia, cities located in the high desert area of San Bernardino County. Authorities appeared at Cardosa’s Perris home with a $5 million warrant. She is expected to be arraigned in Riverside County.

Carrillo was reportedly 12-years-old when the sexual abuse first took place in a school locker room. The other victim, who met Cardosa as a 14-year-old at Tomas Rivera Middle School in Perris, has been identified only as “Brianna” by investigators. Reports are that Cardosa abused her in 2009 and 2010 when the victim was a middle school student in Perris. She has since turned 18, coming forward after the publicity of Carrillo’s abuse had started. Cardosa worked at three previous school districts before arriving at Alhambra in Los Angeles County. She served as an assistant principal and a girls’ coach.

Bazbaz is being held at the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail pending a detention hearing. According to Ihlenfeld, Bazbaz began communicating with a 15-year-old female from Jefferson County, Ohio, in December 2013 via the website known as MeetMe.com. It is alleged that Bazbaz

Federal prosecutors also filed a plea agreement in which Heera agreed to plead guilty to the felony offense of selling counterfeit circuit boards that are installed in engine control units to boost performance. In the plea agreement, Heera admits that he reverse-engineered, manufactured, advertised, and sold approximately 86 counterfeit Hondata K-Pro and S300 devices, which are aftermarket devices manufactured and sold by the Torrance-based Hondata Inc. In the plea agreement, Heera admits that, beginning in 2009, he arranged
for Hondata’s K-Pro and S300 devices to be reverse-engineered. Investigators believe that Heera had the devices reverse engineered in China, and he then paid an unknown Chinese company to build some of the devices. Heera also manufactured counterfeit circuit boards at his workplace, which contained Hondata’s proprietary software. The counterfeit devices bore Hondata’s trademarked name, as well as counterfeit serial numbers. Heera also admitted creating counterfeit packaging, labels, instructions, and compact discs for the devices.
Heera, using the online screen name Maddman7887, then advertised and sold the counterfeit K-Pro and S300 devices over the Internet, he admitted in the plea agreement. To avoid detection, Heera installed the counterfeit K-Pro devices into used ECUs or instructed the customers to send their ECUs to him for installation. Heera specifically admitted selling 62 counterfeit K-Pro devices and 24 counterfeit S300 devices, generating approximately $58,000 in income. If the products had been genuine, they would have had a retail value of approximately $74,000.
Heera has agreed to appear in federal court in Los Angeles for an arraignment on March 24. The investigation in this matter was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Gangs of Los Angeles Part 1: Innovative Approaches to a Serious Problem At 5 a.m., the command post in our Los Angeles Division was buzzing with activity. It would be a day of reckoning for nearly two dozen members of MS-13, the violent street gang that over the years has brought drugs, murder, and misery to countless Los Angeles neighborhoods. Before the sun came up, teams of FBI agents and their partners from the LAPD began making arrests. In short order, the large video monitors in the command post started to show the words “in custody” next to the images of the subjects—many of whom were wanted on federal drug charges and were the gang’s leaders, or “shot callers,” in the parlance of the street. In Los Angeles—often referred to as the gang capital of the world—it was just another day for the men and women of the FBI who work to protect the community from hundreds of area gangs. But locking up these criminals is only part of the story. Together with our law enforcement and community partners, the Los Angeles Division is taking a leadership role in the fight against gangs with innovative programs designed to bring healing as well as justice to

ships are essential to solving crimes.”
“You can’t arrest your way out of the gang problem,” explained Robert Clark, an assistant special agent in charge in Robert Clark, Los Angeles FBI assistant our Los special agent in charge. Angeles Division. “Looking at the statistics prior to 2007 and in the seven years since I’ve been here,” he said, “there’s been upwards of a 300 percent increase in arrests, but the gang problem still exists.” Clark and others considered new approaches. “Where could we bring our resources and our like ideas to really have an impact in the community?” he asked. “FBI agents and local police officers can’t be everywhere. That’s why it was important that we build relationships in the community. Those relation-
Understanding firsthand the challenges facing gang-plagued neighborhoods based on his own childhood growing up in the inner city of Youngstown, Ohio, Clark spearheaded three initiatives that are making a difference in Los Angeles. In the coming weeks, FBI.gov will chronicle those programs, which are helping to empower communities, reduce the crime rate, clear unsolved murder cases, and aid in intelligencegathering efforts that allow the Bureau to monitor gangs with an international reach such as MS-13. The programs include: Operation Save Our Streets Task Force, established in 2010 in partnership with the LAPD to solve gangrelated homicide cases; The Community Impact Initiative, in which law enforcement personnel and other volunteers return to neighborhoods after gang busts to clean alleyways of trash and graffiti, working alongside residents and property owners; and The Homicide Library project, a joint initiative between the FBI and the LAPD that is digitizing thousands of paper-only murder investigation files for use in a searchable system that will help solve more cases.
Through the FBI’s Community Impact Initiative, law enforcement personnel and other volunteers return to neighborhoods after gang busts to clean alleyways, working alongside residents and property owners.
“Thanks to the hard work of many, many people,” Clark said, “we have been able to take these ideas and implement them and measure their success. We have been able to take murderers off the streets,” he added, “and just as importantly, we are helping to improve the quality of life in communities where residents often felt forgotten or ignored.”
Registered Sex Offender Sentenced to 15 Years in Federal Prison for International Transportation of Child Pornography On February 10, 2014, United States District Judge Marcia Morales Howard sentenced Charles Lee Gorish (67, St. Augustine) to 15 years in federal prison for transporting images and videos of child pornography from Florida to Canada. He was also ordered to serve a 10-year term of supervision, following his incarceration, and to register as a sex offender. Gorish pleaded guilty on October 23, 2013. He has been in custody since his arrest in St. Augustine on September 7, 2012. According to court documents, Gorish used a fake name to send a package, via FedEx from St. Augustine, to an individual in Ontario, Canada. The package was intercepted by Canadian law enforcement officers. It contained, among other things, two micro SD media cards containing more than 600 images and videos depicting child pornography and thousands of images of child erotica. Canadian officials notified the St. Johns County Sheriff ’s Office (SJCSO), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations regarding the seizure of this package. Further investigation revealed that Gorish is a registered sex offender. He was convicted in Hillsborough County, Florida, on February 24, 1992, of three counts of lewd and lascivious conduct on a minor child. On September 7, 2012, FBI agents and SJCSO personnel executed a federal search warrant at Gorish’s residence in St. Augustine. During an interview, Gorish admitted that he downloaded the files depicting
the sexually explicit images of young boys on the SD cards from the Internet over a period of years. Gorish was subsequently arrested. This case was investigated by the Canadian Border Services Agency, Ottawa Police Services, the St. Johns County Sheriff ’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney D. Rodney Brown. It is another case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children and to identify and rescue victims. District Attorney Jackie Lacey Unveils New Program Aimed at Helping Young Victims of Sex Trafficking Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced February 12, 2014, an innovative new diversion program aimed at getting young victims of sex trafficking off the streets and out of harm’s way. Until now, minors between the ages of 12 to 17 who were arrested for sex-related crimes were deemed juvenile delinquents. Between 2000 and 2010, the Juvenile Division of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed 2,188 petitions against minors caught soliciting or loitering for solicitation. Those arrested were processed through juvenile courts with little or no resources devoted to addressing the underlying issues that forced them into prostitution. “We believe that minors who engage in sex for pay are victims not criminals,” District Attorney Lacey said during a news conference. “We believe that we should help these children, not detain them. “Today, I am pleased to announce the launch of the First Step Diversion Program. First Step is innovative alternative to prosecution.” First Step is a diversion program aimed at providing victims of sex trafficking a chance to rebuild their lives before they are charged, appear in court and are placed on probation. Lacey said the District Attorney’s Office is joining forces with the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Probation Department and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services to identify girls under 18 who have been arrested for sex related offenses. First Step will be rolled out in two Juvenile Division Branch Offices – Sylmar and Compton. These juvenile offices were selected due to the volume of arrests and because those girls arrested actually reside in that community. A supervising deputy district attorney will be assigned to oversee First Step within each juvenile office. For a period of one year, minors who agree to
enter the First Step program will receive referral services, such as crisis intervention, sexual assault and mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, education and other appropriate social services. The District Attorney’s Office has partnered with Los Angeles County four nonprofit, District Attorney community-based Jackie Lacey organizations to provide a wide array of social services. Lacey thanked the YWCA Greater Los Angeles, Saving Innocence, the Valley Trauma Center in Van Nuys and the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking for their generous support and willingness to offer programs to help rescue and redirect victims of sex trafficking. “I especially want to thank Faye Washington, president and CEO of the YWCA Greater Los Angeles for its $25,000 contribution,” Lacey said. “This money will be used to provide services to First Step participants.” At the end of the year, if the minor has successfully completed the program, the arrest that prompted the minor’s entry into program will be cleared. “We understand the enormous challenges these children face in trying to break away from their pimps and abusers,” District Attorney Lacey said. She noted that pimps target vulnerable youth -runaway and homeless children who may have experienced trouble at home, youth with drug problems, children who have been sexually or physically abused or neglected. “These are the victims who have been robbed of hope at a very young age,” she said. “We want to stand beside these young victims and show them there is a way out if they just take the First Step.”

Long Beach Police Find 36 Kilos of Cocaine After Routine Traffic Stop A Long Beach man suspected of possessing 36 kilos of cocaine, with a street value of approximately $2.8 - $3.6 million, was arrested in North Long Beach after a routine traffic stop. On February 17, 2014, North Division Directed Enforcement officers stopped a vehicle in the 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue for a traffic related violation. Officers noted the driver seemed unusually nervous and was found to be driving without a license. While conducting an inventory search of the vehicle incident to storage, officers located packaging material, which was consistent with packaging large quantities of narcotics. Officers found this to be highly suspicious and believed this may be related to drug sales. The investigation led officers to the driver’s home in the 1100 block of E. 72nd Street, Long Beach. Officers and Drug Investigations Section detectives served a search warrant and seized the following items: •
Approximately 36 Kilos (79.20 pounds) of cocaine
•
Over three pounds of methamphetamine
•
1 handgun and ammunition
•
Over $3,000 cash
•
1 stolen vehicle
The driver, 28 year-old Hildefonso Angulo, was arrested and booked for possession of narcotics for sales and is being held at the Long Beach Jail on $1,000,000 bail. The Long Beach Police Department will continue their efforts in the fight against illegal drugs, which negatively impacts communities everywhere. Anyone wishing to report illegal drug activity should contact the Long Beach Police Department’s Drug Investigations Section at (562) 570-7221. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.

ya njo e hild ize? c r you sh pr d l a u Wo $50 c
We want to encourage our youth to reflect on their scary or sad times while helping others by sharing their experiences. As adults, we deal with good and bad situations every day. But to children, a small situation can seem like the end of the world. Attention News is encouraging our youth to reflect on a situation, then share about how they worked through it. Nothing is worse than feeling alone because nobody understands you. By sharing their stories, other children will learn they are not alone with their sadness and fear. Criteria for writing contest: Open to any youth up to the age of 16
Story must be real
Length 100-300 words
Examples of sad or scary situations to a child could be: Moving to a new neighborhood Dealing with a bully or a friend being bullied Getting a bad grade on a test Child or a friend getting injured Speaking to an adult about an abusive situation Death of a family member, friend or pet Sibling “abandoning” them by going to college or moving out Starting a new school Favorite TV show ending • • • •
Each issue will have at least two $50 award winning essays. The child’s first name, age and city will only be printed with written permission from the parent. It’s our suggestion to the parents that the child be allowed to spend the award on something fun of their choice. Winning essays will be chosen by a group of independent judges from victims’ assistance groups, child abuse advocates, drug counselors, and school teachers.
