How can can IIprevent preventbeing beingthe the victi victim of a violent crime? can take all reasonable measures to reduce your risk and still be assaulted.

Stopping a sexual assault

Knowledge is power. By always being aware of your surroundings and taking steps to prevent an attack, you lower the risk of being the victim of a violent crime. Know the location, street name and surrounding buildings, in case it becomes necessary for you to call 911. Listen to your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable or in danger in any given situation, leave immediately. Learn to be observant of people around you. What color eyes do they have? What are they wearing? Notice their teeth, tattoos, their size, hairstyle, or any other distinguishable features. All these will help you in the event it becomes necessary to contact the police. The primary responsibility for any assault rests with the offender and not the victim. Unfortunately, you

Most people spent Halloween giving candy to kids at their front door or walking their neighborhood with their own kids. This year, Halloween kicked off a 4 day carnival with Justice for Murdered Children at Ports O’ Call in San Pedro. Fun was had by all who attended and money was raised for 2 very worthy holiday projects. First, Lawanda and JFMC along with a host of volunteers will supply Thanksgiving dinner to 250 families of murdered children. Second, they will supply toys at Christmas to hundreds of children of murdered parents. Adults can choose if they want to be criminals but our children are innocent bystanders. If the spirit moves you to donate food or funds to these worthy causes, please contact LaWanda Hawkins at 310 547-5362.

LA Councilman Busciano, Jade Archer and Attention! Editor Rev. Don Abernathy with my boy Mathew working the balloon booth.

Remember that most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows. The stranger does not pose the highest risk to you. Up to 90 percent of sex offenders are known to their victims and include relatives, friends and authority figures. If you feel uncomfortable in someone’s presence, trust your feelings and take steps to distance yourself from him or her. Don’t be afraid to make a scene if necessary. Tell someone! Here are a few ways to keep you and your family members safe: -Avoid high-risk situations. -Be observant and aware of your surroundings. -Avoid poorly lit areas where an attacker might hide. -Identify safe people in your neighborhood that you or your children can go to if you need help. Be thoughtful and use good judgment in choosing your friends and partners. -Be careful of your use of alcohol and drugs; you are more vulnerable to an attack if you are intoxicated.

-Do not leave your food or drink unattended at a party or in a public place.

-Do not buzz someone into the building or hold the lobby door open unless you know the person.

-Don’t be embarrassed to use security staff at work or when shopping if you need help walk¬ing to your car.

-Have the number to 911 programmed into your home telephone.

-Do not pick up hitchhikers or stop to help a stranger in a stalled vehicle; use a phone in a safe location to call for help.

-Be mentally prepared of the possibility of being attacked and what possible actions you would take if confronted.

-Be cautious about making personal contact with those you meet on the Internet or in other similar environments.

-Install safety approved gates or bars on windows that can be reached from fire escapes on from the ground floor.

Making your home safe

The information presented through this brochure should assist you and your family in avoiding situations that allow easy victimization. Please be aware that there are no perfect protection strategies. There is no way to predict all possible situations. These tips are intended to reduce, not eliminate the risk of assault.

In your home or apartment, you will want to make sure your entrance is well lit. Install security lights in areas where people can hide. Keep your doors locked and blinds pulled. Do not advertise your full name in the phone book or on the mailbox. Your initials and last name are all that is needed. Invest in a paper shredder and shred any personal identifying envelopes or papers. -Avoid sleeping with your windows open if they can be easily accessed from the outside. -Have peep holes on your doors and use them. If you do not recognize who is at your door, do not open it, even with the chain on. Most chain locks can easily be kicked in. -Do not open the door to service people unless you are expecting them. Call their employer and verify their identity and the reason they need to enter your home. -If a stranger asks to use your phone, do not let the person enter. Offer to make the call for them.

Avoid sleeping with your windows open if they can be easily accessed from the outside.

store on their real guns and shoot an officer? Do we then ban florescent paint?

I pose this question. Why does our society tend to take the easiest route and jump on a “ban” What has happened to our society that while bandwagon rather than address the real problem? With the Oct. 22 unfortunate shooting of 13-year- police risk their lives to protect us, in a split second Is the problem kids playing with realistic toy guns old Andy Lopez Cruz in Sonoma County by a they can make the wrong decision and kill a child or criminals shooting law abiding citizens and sheriff’s deputy, the argument over toy guns has for having a toy? Dealing with Child Abuse – Prevention, Intervention, Recovery Part 2 (of 3) – Intervention

If we can believe the official National statistics that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are victims of childhood sexual assault, and that at least an equal number are abused by non-sexual violence, severe emotional traumas and neglect (also known as maltreatment) we are facing a pandemic. This is the second of three columns I’m hoping will help parents and community members to understand the vital role they play in helping deal with child abuse. The three issues I’ll cover are 1) prevention, 2) intervention and 3) recovery. INTERVENTION – Even a well prepared child who has been empowered with the information I suggested last time (see the previous PREVENTION column) can still be a victim of the clever approach and grooming of a pedophile. Among other things, a child is often admonished to “keep this a secret” between them and their predator. A youngster might be warned of harm that might come to them, a family member or a pet, or might be told what had

happened was the child’s “fault.” Of course this is ridiculous. A child is never responsible for any part of the sexual assault they endure. The adult in the “relationship” holds all the guilt. But kids don’t know this and frequently will keep the secret based on shame, confusion, embarrassment, and more. We adults must help them open up about their abuse. The first step in this is the recognition of the numerous NON PHYSICAL signs that something’s amiss with a child. Most of these are changes in performance, attitude or behavior. Below is an incomplete list of some symptoms of sexual abuse and trauma in children that don’t include obvious physical signs such as venereal disease and pregnancy. Adults need to learn how to talk to children in a nonthreatening way. Again there are slightly different techniques for very young kids, for those who are a bit older and for teens. Try not to over-react or express anger to what you’re learning while you talk to a child. Re-assure the youngster that they are not in trouble, and have done nothing wrong themselves. Finally, when an adult has enough of the story to be suspicious of abuse we need to know how and where to report it. Ultimately the in-depth investigation

of the crimes of child abuse is most appropriately a job for the professional child welfare worker or lawenforcement. But officials rely on the community to do the initial reporting. Without our tips, predictors will continue to abuse our children with impunity. Next time: RECOVERY-----

would have to do it again. From second to fifth grade I dealt with the same people, telling me the exact same things. And after a while of being told these horrible things over and over again you start to believe it. You start questioning who you are, and questioning why everyone sees you this horrible way. And then you think, “Well, maybe it’s because that is what I am.” “You’re fat, you’re ugly.” These were the words I was told when I was in second grade. I find it really sad that this is how I started my school years. Every year was a door opened to a new kind of pain that I didn’t know could exist at such a young age. It was just elementary school, and I was already being bullied. People always told me, “It’s just a kid thing, it doesn’t mean anything, and they will grow out

Teachers would blame it on me. They would say that it was my fault for being in the center of it. And I thought, “How could this be my fault? I didn’t choose to be ugly or fat. I never held up a sign that said ‘Please bully me’.”

This one girl and her sister would torture me and block my way to class. So what did I do? Every day I would go home and cut myself. By the time I reached seventh grade I was suicidal. I was told to go and kill myself, and most of the people I thought were my friends turned everyone against me. I was alone. So I looked up ways to kill yourself. And I decided on pills.

Long Beach Police Bust Teenage Burglary Ring by “Following The Law”! By Rev. Don Abernathy

On October 21, 2013 Long Beach Police made a routine traffic stop near Pacific Coast Highway and Cherry Ave. which turned out to be more than routine. When the officer learned the driver was unlicensed, he began preparing to impound the vehicle. Some cities have voiced their reluctance to impound vehicles of unlicensed drivers, fortunately for the residents of Long Beach, the Long Beach Police Department follows this law. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the officer located several computers that were determined to have been stolen from a Long Beach residence earlier in the day. Long Beach resident and driver, Trayon Gaston, 19, was arrested and charged with Receiving Stolen Property and Possession of Marijuana for Sale. The other 3 occupants were questioned and released at the scene. Burglary detectives took over the investigation. On Wednesday, November 6, 2013, Long Beach Police Burglary detectives served search warrants at 4 Long Beach residences: 1700 block of Orizaba Avenue 1500 block of E. 5th Street 2600 block of Magnolia Avenue 1900 block of Pine Ave

As a result of the search warrants, 4 additional Long Beach residents were taken into custody and charged with various crimes. Juvenile male - 16 Charged with Residential Burglary Juvenile male - 17 Charged with Residential Burglary Cartier Anderson - 19 Charged with Residential Burglary, Possession of marijuana for sale Jay Holms - 36 Charged with receiving stolen property, possession of illegal assault weapon, Possession of gun with altered serial number Police recovered a variety of stolen property including 9 firearms, cash, drugs, electronics, and jewelry, including several high-end watches. Four of the recovered guns have all been identified as loss from one Long Beach burglary; however, the owner(s) of other property have yet to be identified. Detectives have released photos of the recovered property to return them items to owners. Detectives believe these individuals may have also been committing burglaries outside of Long Beach. Anyone who believes their property may have been recovered during this operation should contact the Long Beach Police Burglary Detail at (562) 570-7353. Teen Dating Violence Datingviolence violence or abuse Dating abuse affect 11 in 4 teens. affect teens.

Abuse isn’t just hitting. It’s yelling, threatening, name calling, saying “I’ll kill myself if you leave me,” obsessive phone calling or paging, and extreme possessiveness.

Are you going out with someone who...

• Is jealous and possessive, won’t let you have friends, checks up on you or won’t accept breaking up? • Tries to control you by being bossy, giving orders, making all the decisions or not taking your opinion seriously? • Puts you down in front of friends or tells you that you would be nothing without him or her? • Scares you? Makes you worry about reactions to things you say or do? Threatens you? Uses or owns weapons? • Is violent? Has a history of fighting, loses his or her temper quickly, brags about mistreating others? Grabs, pushes, shoves, or hits you? • Pressures you for sex or is forceful or scary about sex? Gets too serious about the relationship too fast? • Abuses alcohol or other drugs and pressures you to use them? • Has a history of failed relationships and always blames the other person for all of the problems? • Believes that he or she should be in control of the relationship? • Makes your family and friends uneasy and concerned for your safety?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could be a victim of dating abuse. Both males and females can be victims of dating violence, as can partners in heterosexual and homosexual relationships.

What if Your Partner Is Abusing You and You Want Out? • Don’t put up with abuse. You deserve better. • Know that you are not alone. Teens from all different backgrounds across the country are involved in or have been involved in a violent relationship. • Understand that you have done nothing wrong. It is not your fault. • Know that the longer you stay in the abusive relationship, the more intense the violence will become. • Recognize that being drunk is not an excuse for someone to become abusive. • Talk with your parents, a friend, a counselor, a faith leader or spiritual leader, or someone else you trust.

The more isolated you are from friends and family, the more control the abuser has over you. • Know that you can get help from professionals at rape crisis centers, health services, counseling centers, or your family’s health care provider. • Alert a school counselor or security officer about the abuse. • Keep a daily log of the abuse for evidence. • Remember that no one is justified in attacking you just because he or she is angry. • Do not meet him or her alone. Do not let him or her in your home or car when you are alone. • Avoid being alone at school, your job, or on the way to and from places. • Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back. • Plan and rehearse what you will do if he or she becomes abusive.

How To Be a Friend to a Victim of Dating Violence Most teens talk to other teens about their problems. If a friend tells you things that sound like his or her relationship is abusive, here are some suggestions on ways to help.

• Don’t ignore signs of abuse. Talk to your friend. • Express your concerns. Tell your friend you’re worried. Support, don’t judge. • Point out your friend’s strengths — many people in abusive relationships are no longer capable of seeing their own abilities and gifts. • Encourage your friend to con?de in a trusted adult. Offer to go with the friend for professional help. • Find out what laws in your state may protect your friend from the abuser. • Never put yourself in a dangerous situation with the victim’s partner. Don’t try to mediate or otherwise get involved directly. • Call the police if you witness an assault. Tell an adult — school principal, parent, guidance counselor, or school resource officer — if you suspect the abuse but don’t witness it.

Take Action • Educate teens and adults in your community. Start a peer education program on teen dating violence. • Encourage your school or a community organization to start a program to help abusers conquer their behavior. Teaching them how to be in a relationship without resorting to violence will help break the cycle. • Read up on healthy relationships and dating violence. Ask your school library to purchase books about living without violence and the cycle of domestic violence. • Inquire about having health, social studies, contemporary living, and other classes incorporate discussions of teen dating violence and its prevention.

How Can I Protect My Child From Sexual Assault? Pt. 1 of 5 Message from Megan’s Law Crime Victims Center:

Convicted sex offenders say “Parents are so naïve - they’re worried about strangers and should be worried about their brother-in-law. They just don’t realize how devious we can be. Know that we will use any way we can to get to children.” The best offense is a great defense. Understand the dynamics of child sexual abuse and you and your children will be safer. Most child sexual abuse, up to 90%, occurs with someone a child has an established and trusting relationship with, whether known or not by the parent, and who is often a person in a position of authority. Teaching your children about stranger danger is misleading and does not address the reality that most children know and trust those who abuse them. Sexual predators are smart, extremely cunning and often individuals you least expect would commit such crimes. Sometimes they are the well-respected pillars of the community. They develop elaborate schemes and go to great extents to do anything to get access to children.

Sex offender notifications give the community an opportunity to be made aware of those offenders who have been caught and convicted and to take necessary precautions such as not allowing our children to develop relationships with registrants. Do not make the mistake of believing that you and your children will be safe by focusing all of your prevention efforts on those that have been caught and convicted. This false sense of security gives sexual predators that have not been caught and convicted the opportunity to access and sexually victimize children. How Can YOU Protect yOUR Child? Know… • That Most Sexual Abuse Starts With The Violation of A Boundary • How To Trust Everyone But Define Their Role • The 27 Tricks Sexual Predators Use To Access Potential Victims • The Red Flags To Identify A Potential Problem • The 10 Rules For Safety For Children and Teens • The Behavioral and Physical Signs of Sexual Abuse • What Sexual Predators Count On • How To Protect Children and Teens Online • How To Protect Children and Teens Who Play Video Games and Game Online Know That Most Sexual Abuse Starts With a Violation of a Boundary Although most high-profile cases deal with stranger abduction and molestation, most child sexual abuse

happens with those whom a child has an established and trusting relationship with. If you want to prevent this abuse, you have to focus your prevention efforts on clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of those who are in relationships with children. You have the power to protect your child from sexual predators, and you must know that Megan’s Law is not the only answer. Your long-term commitment to changing certain parenting practices will significantly reduce the potential of your child falling prey to a sexual predator. It could be easy to only teach your children the ten rules for safety, but those rules, like most prevention programs, fall short of teaching children skills to ward off sexual abuse attempts made by those with whom children are in established and trusting relationships.

Sexual abuse starts with a violation of a boundary. A boundary is a physical or emotional limit that is placed on an individual in a relationship. You will have to learn how to identify limits and boundaries in your relationships and in relationships you define for your child. The undefined limitless relationship has blurry boundaries and offers predators an opportunity to exploit. TRUST EVERYONE WITH YOUR CHILD BUT DEFINE THEIR ROLE Some parents get to this point in the prevention process and throw their hands up in frustration because they feel that they cannot trust anyone, but you should trust everyone. That doesn’t make sense right? Let’s put it another way: Trust everyone with your child, but trust them only within the limits and boundaries of the responsibilities you have defined in the role they play in your child’s life. Roles: Your child has many people in their life that have certain roles. Responsibilities: Each person in their role has certain responsibilities that you need to clearly define and articulate to your child. Boundary: The limit of responsibility you set within each role is called a boundary. It is the limit you set when you define the many different roles people are assuming in your child’s life. Let’s explore this concept further using the following figures while defining the role of a baseball coach. Your 7-year-old child plays baseball. You can define the role of the coach by first evaluating the responsibilities within the role he assumes in your child’s life. He teaches your child how to field the ball, how to bat, how to throw and how to be a good sport. The baseball coach should not be picking up and dropping off your child alone for baseball practice because it blurs the boundary. The baseball coach who honors the boundaries within

his role is being mindful only of his responsibilities as a baseball coach.

to choose to either terminate the relationship with the instructor or accept the instructor’s most generous offer to pick up their child for lessons. Whichever choice they make, they are modeling boundary behavior to their child.

If your child’s coach is asking to pick up and drop off your child alone after practice, then he is violating a boundary and you must defend it by saying “no.” If you allow him to assume the responsibilities within your role as a parent by providing transportation to your child then the boundary becomes blurred.

What Would You Do?

Sexual abuse typically begins with a violation of some sort of boundary, so if you begin defining the roles early on in your child’s life, they will know immediately if someone tries to violate the boundaries you have helped them to identify.

What tipped you off to a potential problem? If it was that the instructor was unwilling to be flexible in his schedule, which would conveniently pressure you into allowing him to pick up your child, you’re right. However, first and foremost, what should have sparked your concern is the violation of the boundary outside of his role as a piano instructor. The truth is that his offer was most generous, and even if he was not trying to target the child it would be inappropriate for this parent to involve the piano instructor in their transportation responsibilities.

Teaching your children to trust everyone within the defined role requires an intense commitment on your part because you will need to clearly and continually define and update the responsibilities for all of the roles people play in their life.

You have the power to protect. What you should be thinking is that you would have made it clear to the instructor that you appreciate his generous offer, and thanks-but-no-thanks, and the relationship would be terminated.

Define and articulate to your child the roles people play in their life and the boundaries associated with those roles.

Here is how it should play out:

Defend and take action when their boundaries are violated and make sure that you are modeling healthy boundaries in your personal and professional relationships.

The limits of this relationship are that the piano instructor is responsible for teaching my child how to play piano. Instructor should be patient, supportive and encouraging.

Let’s take a look at an example by defining, defending and taking action when a boundary has been violated. The Piano Instructor Scenario Your child has been playing piano for a year. You are quite pleased with his progress and have a very good relationship with his piano instructor. The instructor has been coming to your home for lessons and has recently announced that he has completed construction of his new studio and would like your child to come to the studio for lessons, as will the rest of his students. You think this is a wonderful opportunity because your child will be able to play on a brand new grand piano. The instructor announces that his only available time slot will be on an evening that your spouse works late. You realize that you will be unable to fit it into your schedule and tell him that the time does not work for you. He is firm in his scheduling and suggests that he could pick up your child for the lesson and you could pick him up after the lesson, just after your spouse comes home from work. Define The Role Piano instructor is responsible for teaching my child how to play piano. Instructors should be patient, supportive and encouraging. Defend The Boundary & Take Action The parent recognizes that the instructor has made a suggestion that violates the definition of the responsibilities he has in his role as the piano instructor. The parent has

Define The Role

Defend The Boundary And Take Action The parent recognizes that the instructor has made a suggestion that violates the definition of the responsibilities he has in his role as the piano instructor. Parent makes it clear to the instructor that they need more time-slot choices than just one, and that although the offer to pick up the child is a generous one, it is not appropriate. If the instructor is unable to offer options, then the parent must terminate the relationship and find another instructor for their child. The action taken by the parent serves to model healthy boundaries for the child. The child has been given permission through the parent’s actions that it is okay to say “no” when someone offers something to you, even if it means that you might lose something good. Some parents might accept the instructor’s offer for fear that if they didn’t he might be insulted. Even if the instructor’s intention was not to sexually victimize this child, it was a violation of a boundary for him to even make this suggestion. He has a responsibility of maintaining a level of professionalism as defined by his role, as well. He stepped outside of the boundary which was harmful to all involved, even if he was not a sexual predator. When you start to become more experienced at this, you will begin to recognize how other adults are violating boundaries as part of their daily activities without even realizing it. You might even discover instances where even you are violating boundaries without having been aware. TO BE CONTINUED.....

Smell the Roses By Rev. Don Abernathy

On Saturday November 9th, family and friends gathered at Ms. Olivia Verrett’s lovely home to honor Carson’s Matriarch Ms. Frances Douglass Cottrell. The gathering raised funds and school supplies for the WIN school in West Africa but more importantly allowed person after person to show their respect and admiration for a remarkable woman and a pillar of the Carson community. I was touched by the quality of people that had so much respect and wonderful things to say about this elegant lady. In Senator Wright’s invocation, he said something along the lines of, “It’s refreshing to be able to honor someone while they can still smell the roses being presented to them”. This message resonated through a lot of the speakers and presenters like Carson Councilman Mike Gibson, Carson Councilman Albert Robles, members of the Carson Women’s Club along with numerous Carson Commissioners and residents who were all grateful for having Ms. Cottrell touch their lives. Ms. Cottrell smiled as her family and friends described her as an inspiration, a role model and a motivator but it was the truly genuine emotion behind those words that made everyone feel the love in the room.

I learned 2 lessons that day. First, if you spend your days treating others and yourself with the utmost level of respect, those around you will reciprocate with high levels of respect. Next, if you’ve been fortunate enough to have someone touch your life in a special way; tell them while they’re still alive so they can smell the roses blooming from the cultivation of their good deeds.

One question I don’t think anyone can really answer is who felt better about the day, the recipient of the gracious words, Ms. Cottrell, or the people that shared them with heartfelt smiles and a gleam in their eyes. Anyone wishing to contribute funds or school supplies to the WIN school in West Africa should contact NAACP Region One Director Olivia Verrett (310) 901-2655.

MARCUS “BOOBY” ROGERS MURDERED Marcus “Booby” Rogers had a heart of gold and spirit that lit up any room he entered. His friends, family and the police are completely confused why someone picked him up on March 5, 2013, shot him and dumped his body in the gutter on 110th St., just east of Main St. Video footage shows a late model dark colored SUV, possibly a 2007 or older BMW, speeding away. Charayll Walker, Rogers’ mother said, “Marcus was not a gang member and never did anything to deserve this. He attended ITT’s Criminal Justice program because

he wanted to help people.” The family has overcome many obstacles. Marcus was on his third pacemaker and Charayall received a kidney transplant in February 2013. This is a close knit family of survivors and they deserve to know what happened to Marcus. Close friend, Tresvian Kennedy, said, “Going anywhere with Marcus took longer because he had to say hello to everyone. He cared too much for everyone.” Rogers’ liked basketball, video games and spending time with his son. Jamesha Myles said of Rogers that he was a devoted, caring and loving father to their infant son.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Det. Tom Eiman at (323) 213-9807

Someone knows the details of what happened and why. Det. Tom Eiman LAPD said, “The investigation shows Rogers was shot at a different location. There doesn’t seem to be any connection to the location on 110th St.”

FBI Releases 2012 Statistics on Law Enforcement

Officers Killed & Assaulted FBI San Diego According to statistics collected by the FBI, 95 law enforcement officers were killed in line-of-duty incidents in 2012. Of these, 48 law enforcement officers died as a result of felonious acts, and 47 officers died in accidents. In addition, 52,901 officers were victims of line-of-duty assaults. Comprehensive data tables about these incidents and brief narratives describing the fatal attacks are included in the 2012 edition of Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, released October 28, 2013. Felonious Deaths The 48 felonious deaths occurred in 26 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The number of officers killed as a result of criminal acts in 2012 decreased by 24 when compared with the 72 officers who died in 2011. The five- and 10-year comparisons show an increase of seven felonious deaths compared with the 2008 figure (41 officers) and a decrease of four deaths compared with 2003 data (52 officers). Officer Profiles: The average age of the officers who were feloniously killed was 38

years. The victim officers had served in law enforcement for an average of 12 years at the time of the fatal incidents. Forty-three of the officers were male, and five were female. Forty-two of the officers were white, and six were black. Circumstances: Of the 48 officers feloniously killed, 12 were killed in arrest situations, eight were investigating suspicious persons or circumstances, eight were conducting traffic pursuits/stops, six were ambushed, five were involved in tactical situations, and four were answering disturbance calls. Three of the slain officers were handling, transporting, or maintaining custody of prisoners; one was conducting an investigative activity, such as surveillance, searches, or interviews; and one officer was killed while handling a person with a mental illness. Weapons: Offenders used firearms to kill 44 of the 48 victim officers. Of these 44 officers, 32 were slain with handguns, seven with rifles, and three with shotguns. The type of firearm used was not reported in the deaths of two officers. Two officers were killed with vehicles used as weapons, one with personal weapons (hands, fists,

feet, etc.), and one with a knife. Regions: Twenty-two of the felonious deaths occurred in the South, eight in the West, six in the Midwest, and six in the Northeast. Five of the deaths took place in Puerto Rico, and one officer was killed in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Suspects: Law enforcement agencies identified 51 alleged assailants in connection with the felonious line-of-duty deaths. Thirty-three of the assailants had

prior criminal arrests, and eight of the offenders were under judicial supervision at the time of the felonious incidents. Accidental Deaths Forty-seven law enforcement officers were killed accidentally while performing their duties in 2012. The majority (22 officers) were killed in automobile accidents. The number of accidental line-of-duty deaths was down six from the 2011 total (53 officers).

What Causes Shoes to Alarm Metal Detectors?

Acting on a tip, Specialized Enforcement Team deputies found Dennis Michael McKenzie, 55, in the 500 block of South Palm Canyon Drive around 4:30 p.m. Oct. 30, San Bernardino County sheriff ’s spokeswoman Cynthia Bachman said. McKenzie had been released from prison and paroled to a halfway house in Long Beach, Bachman said. “Recently, he cut off his GPS monitoring device and his current whereabouts are unknown,” Bachman said earlier Wednesday, before the suspect was in custody. “McKenzie has a history of frequenting the Lake Arrowhead area of the San Bernardino County, Long Beach, Banning, Los Angeles County and Palm Springs.”

McKenzie was arrested Wednesday on a felony no-bail warrant, Bachman said.

name? He was going places, he had dreams and he had goals. Like your son,” said Marsha Shoushtari. “You need to help us, you need to help yourselves. We are a community of believers. We don’t want this to go on in our community. We want to stop the violence. We want guns down and voices up.”

According to the TSA, some travelers, by policy, are not required to remove their shoes, but if their shoes alarm during the screening process, or if they require secondary screening for another reason, they might be asked to remove them. So let’s take a look at what can cause shoes to set off a metal detector: • Shoe Shanks – Many shoes have what’s known as a shank, which is embedded between the insole and outsole. It’s there for support, and can be made of steel, Kevlar, or fiberglass. If it’s steel, there is a chance it could cause your shoes to alarm. Here are some pictures of shoe shanks if you’re wondering what they look like.

LOS ANGELES, CA Bijan Shoushtari was a football captain at Hamilton High School with a bright future and a desire to be of service to his community. Shoushtari volunteered at a fire station after church on Sundays and aspired to be a paramedic. On August 3 around midnight, Shoushtari and 2 friends were driving north on Crenshaw Blvd approaching Vernon in a 1973 Buick Electra. According to LAPD Det. Supervisor Sal LaBarbera, an unknown person opened fire from a gray or silver vehicle that drove alongside the1973 Buick striking Shoushtari. Sadly, Shoushtari died from his wounds 2 days later. Marsha Jones-Shoushtari said, “I want to know how that person grew up, how that person was loved, and everything about how my son died. I wanna know why, I wanna know when, I wanna know how”.

Officer Profiles: The average age of the officers who were accidentally killed was 39 years, and the average number of years the victim officers had served in law enforcement was 12. Forty- five of the officers were male, and two were female. Thirty-six of the officers were white, nine were black, and two officers were Asian/ Pacific Islander. Circumstances: Of the 47 officers accidentally killed, 22 died as a result of automobile accidents, 10 were struck by vehicles, six died in motorcycle accidents, three were killed in falls, three died in aircraft accidents, two were accidentally shot, and one died in another type of dutyrelated accident. Regions: Twenty-seven of the accidental deaths occurred in the South, nine in the Northeast, eight in the West, and three in the Midwest. Assaults In 2012, of the 52,901 officers assaulted while performing their duties, 27.7 percent suffered injuries. The largest percentage of victim officers (32.5 percent) were assaulted while responding to disturbance calls. Assailants used personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) in 80.2 percent of the incidents, firearms in 4.3 percent of incidents, and knives or other cutting instruments in 1.7 percent of the incidents. Other types of dangerous weapons were used in 13.9 percent of assaults.

• Steel Toes – Steel toes in shoes and boots. • Roller Shoes – If you’ve ever seen someone suddenly begin to skate in their tennis shoes, you’ve seen roller shoes. A wheel pops out of the heel and allows the shoes to double as roller skates. The wheel mechanism can cause the shoes to alarm. • Light Up Shoes – Light up shoes have wires and a battery that can cause an alarm.

So, now that you know what can cause shoes to alarm, let’s discuss some alternatives: • Airport Friendly Shoes - Some brands offer “airport friendly” shoes that are manufactured without metal. If you have trouble finding a pair, a quick internet search should do the trick. • Slippers & Flip Flops – If you have a pair of shoes that you know will alarm, you can pack them in your carry-on bag and wear slippers or flip flops through the walk through metal detector. After security, you can put your favorite shoes on.

Internet Child Porn - 5 Arrests. Investigation Continues. LA County

Cyber Crimes Task Force A six week investigation by a Los Angeles County Cyber Crimes Task Force has culminated in the arrest of five suspects in a wide ranging case involving the possession and distribution of child pornography over the Internet. On Wednesday October 23, 2013, and Thursday October 24, 2013, task force members served search warrants at homes in South Los Angeles, Palmdale and Fullerton, and businesses in the Cities of Baldwin Park, and Whittier. Evidence linking the suspects to the distribution of child pornography was recovered from each of the locations. The first four suspects who were arrested are identified as 19-year-old Rolando Garcia of South Los Angeles, 43-year-old Mario Aburto of West Covina, 72-year-old Jon Johnson of Fullerton, and 53-year-old Soraya Solimano of Palmdale. Rolando Garcia, Mario Aburto and Jon Johnson were

arrested for suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography. Soraya Solimano was arrested for suspicion of possessing a controlled substance. A fifth suspect, 52-year-old Gregory MacClean of Palmdale, was arrested Friday morning (10/25/13) for possession and distribution of child pornography. Suspect MacClean had previously fled when investigators attempted to contact him at his workplace in Whittier, and then failed to show up at a pre-arranged meeting with investigators. He then turned himself in on Friday. The Los Angeles County Cyber Crimes Task Force consists of Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Deputies, as well as members of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

ICAC was started by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, in 1998. Its primary goals are to provide state and local law enforcement agencies with the tools to prevent Internet crimes against children, to encourage multi-jurisdictional cooperation, and to educate law enforcement, parents, and teachers. The ICAC task force seeks to identify distributors of child pornography on the Internet, whether delivered on-line or solicited on-line and distributed through other channels, and to apprehend sexual predators who solicit victims on the Internet through chat rooms and other methods.

Since 1990—through the Director’s Leadership Community Awards, the FBI has publicly recognized the achievements of individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond the call to service by making extraordinary contributions to their communities in the areas of terrorism, cyber, drug, gang, or violence prevention and education. Ms. Fricke will be recognized by FBI Charlotte employees on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at Colonel Francis Beatty Park, Matthews, North Carolina. Ms. Fricke will also receive the award from FBI Director James Comey in a national ceremony to be held at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. in April 2014. You can learn more about her program by visiting:

In alliance with other youth organizations, Trips for Kids Charlotte provides mentoring to 10-15 year old children through bicycling experiences. The Trips for Kids Charlotte vision is to use biking as the tool to prepare children for success by focusing on character building traits like respect, honesty, and teamwork.

In this case, investigators proactively sought out persons offering to distribute child pornography on the Internet. Once sources were identified, investigators then actively downloaded videos and photos from the sources. After confirming it was illegal child pornography, investigators determined the locations from which the images were distributed, then linked them to the suspects who were doing the distributing. The arrests followed. The investigation is continuing. Hundreds of photos and videos of

children between 1 and 16 years old engaged in sex acts with adults were recovered by investigators. There is an ongoing effort to identify and help the children who are victims of these crimes, and who are believed to be located throughout the world. Sexual Offender Fugitives Girl’s Former Tennis Coach Sentenced for Soliciting Her for Child Pornography

Air Force Airman Sentenced for Possession of Child Pornography Brandon Meredith Hardy, 23, of Georgia, was sentenced to 108 months imprisonment on Monday, October 28, 2013, by the Honorable Hugh Lawson, Senior United States District Judge, in Valdosta, Georgia, for possession of child pornography. Once Mr. Hardy is released from prison, he will be under supervision for 15 years and will be monitored as a registered sex offender. Mr. Hardy entered a plea of guilty on July 17, 2013, to one count of possession of child pornography. In his plea, Mr. Hardy admitted that in September 2010, during his time as an airman at Moody Air Force Base, he used a computer at the base to search for and download child pornography. As part of an undercover investigation, a federal search

warrant was executed on Mr. Hardy’s room on November 4, 2010. During the search, agents located a computer and thumbdrive containing images of prepubescent minors and minors under the age of 12 years engaged in sexual acts with adult males. Even though Hardy was caught in November 2010, this did not deter his desires. In May 2011, he was caught in an online sting operation by detectives posing as underage boys. Hardy propositioned the detective for sex believing he was a 12-year-old boy. When Hardy went to the address to meet the boy, he was arrested and charged by the detectives. “Mr. Hardy caused the young children in these disgusting images to be re-

Possessing child pornography is not a victimless crime, and the Department of Justice will use all of its resources to make sure that people like Mr. Hardy don’t have the opportunity to harm our children,” said United States Attorney Michael Moore. KANSAS CITY, KS—A Missouri man who coached youth tennis has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for soliciting a minor girl he coached to send him sexually explicit photos of herself, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today. The defendant also was ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution. Rex Haultain, 56, Parkville, Missouri, pleaded guilty to one count of soliciting child pornography. In his plea, he admitted that in 2009, he told a minor girl he was coaching that she sexually aroused him. While traveling to a tournament in the summer of 2010, he showed her a picture of his penis on a cell phone. In the fall of 2010, he began asking her to send him photos of herself naked, leading eventually to his sexually molesting her.

Her statement read in part: “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about what happened to me. I believe that will be the case for a long time, and maybe even for the rest of my life.” Grissom commended the Overland Park Police Department, the FBI, Victim-Witness Specialist Vivian VanVleet, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Rask for their work on the case.

A burglar got into a house one night. Shining his flashlight on the floor in the dark, he heard a voice saying, “Jesus is watching you.” He shook his head and kept looking for valuables. Again he heard, “Jesus is watching you.” This time, he shined his light all over, and it rested on a parrot. “Did you say that?” “Yes,” said the parrot. “I’m just trying to warn you.” The burglar said, “Warn me, about what?” The bird answered, “The Rottweiler’s name is Jesus.” $

Larryville Blue by Les Lethal

By Brittany Shammas, Sun Sentinel Deputies say they tracked down a man who broke into and burglarized a house Thursday, October 31st, after he left his cellphone on the kitchen counter — and his mom called. An investigator picked up the phone when it started ringing at the Lake Worth house and the word “Mom” appeared on the screen, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office arrest report. He asked the woman on the other end who the phone belonged to, and she said her son, Derek Codd. Codd, 19, of Lake Worth, had the victim’s cellphone at his house and had hidden the man’s shotgun at an abandoned house, the report said. A woman who was with him, Kristen Rynearson, 19, of Lantana, had 49 pieces of jewelry belonging to the victim’s wife in her purse.

Derek Codd, 19, is facing multiple charges, including larceny and burglary. (The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office)

Both were arrested. They’re facing multiple charges, including burglary and larceny. The pair remained behind bars late Monday, with bail set at $1,000 for Rynearson and $18,000 for Codd, according to county records.
