SHARP LEADS GOLFERS

• • •

Above: Team Members D. Shinkle, R. Rickey, M. Rye, B. Combs, Mr. Liffick, D. West, R. Sharp, T. Brooks. The 1977 Golf Team was short of their best year ever. Lack of actual golf playing experience and not much practice during the summer by the boys is what hurt the team. In winning four matches, the team placed third in the Kenton Trace League, two strokes behind the winner, Southeastern. New team member was Tony Brooks. Doug Shinkle was the Most Improved for the year with Robert Sharp being the most consistent.

CROSS COUNTRY TAKES I

The 1977 Cross Country Team finished a strong second in the new Kenton Trace League meet held at Clinton Massie. The team was led this year by seniors Ken Seidl, Alan Scott, Mike Rush, and All-League representative and team MVP Jim " Ernie" Wendling. Jim placed 6th in the sectionals and qualified for the District. Big Spartan hopeful Chuck Irons competed in only two meets this year due to an injury suffered earlier in the season. Underclassman Bobby Campbell was a very strong finisher in every meet and is expected to carry the team next year.

Mr. Kennedy feels that the team gave a good account of itself even though the record doesn't show it. There were only three seniors playing by the end of the season. Kennedy thinks they got valuable experience through it all. Mr. Ayer agrees with Mr. Kennedy. Ayer says the "Spartans" will be getting more experience which will make for a winning season. On the other hand, Mr. Hampton feels nobody really seems to have the desire to win. Hampton says nobody knows what it is like to have a winning season and that shoots down the teams attitude. pg. 42-Upper left: Asst. Coach Norm Ayer, Coach Robert Kennedy, Asst. INJURIES, TEAM DISCORD

A fracas at the Country Day game, where the officiating was questionable, began a series of sour turns for the Spartans. Several team members were thrown off and several others quit in protest. Injuries affected a number of players, including, Mike Albrecht, Greg Patterson, Tim Francisco, and Larry Bagford. For awhile it seemed like " crutch city" at W.H.S. State ranked competition compounded the Spartans' problems. Upper left: The Offense Upper right: The Offensive Backs Middle left: The Defensive Backs Middle right: The Defense

Powder Puff Ends in Tie

• • •

The annual powder puff game was held October 12, during spirit week. Unfortunately, there were no boy cheerleaders or drill team. The game started with Juniors-Sophomores kicking off to Seniors-Freshmen. Nobody knew what they were doing. Coaches were on the sidelines teaching a new string of offense some plays, and also trying to organize the defense. The game ended in a tie with no hard feelings on either side. After the game, everyone celebrated at Cassano's in Centerville. This year's Seniors have never been defeated in their four Powder Puff games.

ARENT'S NIGHT. • .NOV.11,197 Parent's Night recognizes the importance of our parent's help in school activities. How many times has supper been held up because of late practice? How many times has Dad driven us to and from school? Who pays for music lessons and encourages us? A mum and brief walk in the limelight seem a small reward. We're high on our parents and feel their pride in us!

The girls intramural volleyball allowed girls to participate in games after school. The tournament started out with 12 teams. After weeks of playing, 2 teams were in the finals. There were three games played in which the "Shooting Stars" (right) took the championship from the "Seven Dwarfs" left. The boys intramural basketball tournament was played on Saturday mornings. A large number of seniors picked their teams and gave them names. The final game was played before the school at an assembly. It was a long game but worth it for the "Columbians" coached by Frank Robinson. Jim Wendlings team, the "Ferry Boys", only lost by a few but were satisfied with 2nd place. Jim Wendling was voted M.V.P.

The Merris Triplets: Philip, Philly, & Philipp •, Yearbook Staff Gophers! The making of a yearbook is a long and continuing task. From getting ads to photography to lay-out and cropping and finally to meeting deadlines .. . is a long trail. It is appropriate to thank several people who helped us complete this book: Pat Lucas and John Jones of Herff-Jones; Mr. Ferguson, Mrs. Florence Osborne and Mr. Rob Osborne of Osborne Studios; Mr. Williams for helptng us with the Yearbook Class and for general support; Shara Cherryholmes, Maria Vint, Debbie Hall, Charlotte Campbell, Mike Rush, Debbie Reed, Lisa Elam, Missy Wood, Phil Merris, Mike Anderson, Larry Keller, Jerry Hockett, Alan Scott & Kelh Coy for the varying contributions they made to the yearbook. We started out the year quickly and decided on our theme. Then came the run-around of ad getting. Finally, as the pictures poured tn, we started laying the book out. At the end of the school year, we were down to the faithful four: Shara, Maria, Debbie Hall, & Mr. Dillon. They carried the ball till the end.

The first performance was at the Warren County fair with two shows and marching in the parade. In July, the officers went to Ashland, Ohio for a week of drill team camp. After many hard practices during the summer, the girls were ready for their football game performances, the Honey Bee Festival, and the Sauerkraut Festival parades. The girls also performed at several basketball games and competed in various invitationals placing in the Stebbins Invitational.

This year's musical production of "Once Upon a Mattress" was like a fairy tale come to life. It was a colorful, but difficult show to put on. The bad weather kept the cast from many needed practices.

102

Several parts changed hands. All new costumes and sets had to be made. But with a lot of determination and hard work, the cast, under the direction of Mr. Gradel, put on a fantastic show.
