Take a step back and have a good look at your business! Working in the world of commercial real estate I often hear business owners lamenting about the negative impact the internet has had on their business, or the fact that a larger competitor has opened up down the road and has impacted their market share. While these are not factors that can be dismissed, it often strikes me as interesting that more often than not, the very same business owner has not re-evaluated their business with a degree of regularity. It could be that the fit out had not been changed for some time, or that the magazines in the foyer were all dated back in 1992, or that their product offering has not kept in touch with what their customers were after. Complacency, whether you realise it or not, allows a competitor to come up with a better fit out, a fresher menu, friendlier staff

and better communications – all of which could very easily impact your business. It’s often hard to stand back and take a good hard look at your business when you are knee deep in the reality of trying to make a living. However, looking at your business with a fresh pair of eyes, might be just what you need to realise that, unless you are in publishing, the internet is probably not the real reason business is slowing. In fact, if you get savvy with your social media, you can use the internet to tell your clientele about the changes you are making and invite them to come along and enjoy the newly renovated space – and if they mention seeing your promotion on social media they get a discount!
