End of the Wagon Train More than 50 years ago a par point group called the Wagon Train was formed at CCA. The group had as many as 45 members some months when the Snowbirds from Florida returned. They usually had a shotgun start on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, followed by lunch at the Club. Les Stradley, the Club Pro who started in 1969, remembers the group and Clyde Wright as one of the first “Wagonmasters”. The group was always active in Club affairs and six members, Earle Bensing, Lindsay Harper, Dave Hart, Oscar Maier, Jerry Miller, and Jack Woodhouse, all became Club presidents. But time has taken its toll and the group has shrunk to four players, Earle Bensing, Dan Fowler, Jerry Miller, and Dick Milholland. Two are over 90, with 92-year-old Jerry Miller still “hitting it a mile”. Dick Milholland claims to be the only Club member The final four with Debbie Ponder, honorary Wagon Train who has aced all four par 3's including #17 twice. Now all four have member. chosen to retire bringing the Wagon Train to an end.

TEE IT UP Well, Happy New Year everyone. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and was able to spend some time with friends and family over the holidays. I'm sure many of you are as glad as I am that 2020 is OVER!!! We will continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19 and will keep you up to speed on the latest news and how it may impact our golf operation, your usage of the club and golf course as we get it. As we start a new year, I feel as though we have a great staff in place with Brian Muller and Jordan Tennent as our Assistant Golf Professionals and will be looking to add another great Assistant Professional in 2021. I think we have a good foundation of golf events that we have been able to build on and add to our tournament program for 2021 as well. As we get ready for 2021, here are a few items of note. If you were signed up for any of our Golf Services (bag storage, cart storage, and lockers) in 2020, those will continue in 2021 until you tell us otherwise. Also, the golf calendar for 2021 is complete and you can view it on the club calendar on our website. Along with getting some usage out of our SkyTrak Golf Simulator, I also encourage you to try to incorporate some fitness into your golf game preparation. If you need some assistance from a fitness standpoint, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Dennis as both of us are certified by the Titleist Performance Institute and can help you out! Stay warm everyone and let us make 2021 a great year!
SkyTrak: The Winter Golf Solution Don't let your golf game freeze this winter! Get some usage out of our SkyTrak Golf Simulator and launch monitor during the cold weather. Not only will using the SkyTrak simulator help keep your game up, but it will help improve your game as well! Improve your accuracy with the multiple data points including ball speed, launch angle, backspin, sidespin, and carry distance. You also have access to play famous courses all over the world! TURF TALK
frost frustrations Why are Frost delays necessary?
1. Crunchy grass is vulnerable to damage. Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. Walking or driving over frost-covered grass may rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf. Or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects. It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage. 2. When it comes to frost delays, location is everything. Many of us have looked out our windows at home and seen no signs of frost, only to find a frost delay when we reach the golf course. This is because frost can linger in colder microclimates long after other areas have thawed. North-facing slopes, low-lying areas and areas sheltered from the wind are especially likely to remain covered with frost. If you are worried about a potential frost delay it is best to call the golf shop to check on conditions at the course before leaving home. 3. Closely mown turf is at high risk. Frost damage can occur on any part of the golf course, but it poses the greatest risk to closely mown turf. Putting greens are particularly vulnerable because they experience the most concentrated traffic. A foursome typically takes 300 steps or more on each putting green; if there is frost present, all those steps could cause serious damage. 4. A little frost can cause big delays. No signs of frost on the first tee? That doesn’t mean you will get the “all clear” sign. If frost remains in areas that are unavoidable early in the round, the course must remain closed. It is also important to remember that once the frost is totally clear, the maintenance staff will need time to catch up on course preparations before play can begin. 5. More light goes a long way. Shade extends frost delays by preventing sunlight from melting the frost. Pruning or removing trees that shade primary playing surfaces can improve the course’s overall health and reduce the duration of frost delays. This is especially true on holes played early in the round. The shade from a few trees can keep an entire course closed.
Happy New Year from the maintenance department! I hope this finds you all safe and healthy. This is the time of year that we service and detail equipment, and also build and refurbish course accessories. We perform updates to our maintenance facility by reorganizing, painting, and cleaning. We also remove dead trees, thin underbrush areas, and tackle other small projects. We have a long list of drainage needs that we want to address and we hope to start working on these at the start of the New Year. In addition, we utilize this time to plan for the upcoming golf season in terms of fertilizing, chemical application, and cultivation practices. Throughout my career, I have been asked about frost delays and why delays are necessary. So, above I have put together some information for you to reference and will help you understand frost delays. I look forward to making each day better than the last. Once again, it is a pleasure serving as your golf course superintendent. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Warmest Regards, Brandon Ingle, Golf Course Superintendent

Please stay off of them (ie, no hitting against the walls) until we have nets up on the courts. Foot traffic on them before they are firm can be damaging. USTA league play will be starting at the end of March. If you have an interest in playing, please get in touch with Bill and he will direct you to the correct captain. League play involves matches against the various local clubs and goes from the end of March until the end of May. We will be doing some spring break tennis camps for juniors and adults so please contact Bill for info on that. Regards, Bill Barber Director of Tennis

THETHE HICKORY HICKORYSTICK STICK
Several years ago, at one of our annual corporate meetings, an idea was brought to the table that we needed a Lagniappe of our own that would show our appreciation to members and their guests for dining with us. This idea quickly grew to a collaboration of our executive chefs, their staff members and other club staff submitting cookie recipes to be used in our monthly rotation. These cookies would be a bite size sweet treat for everyone who had lunch at one of our properties in the dining room. As McConnell Golf has grown we have been able to feature a club each month, in addition to recipes from our CEO John McConnell and COO Christian Anastasiadis, the Easter bunny and Santa Clause. Beyond baking and serving these delicious treats in our clubs each month, we also share the recipe in our newsletter and online blog that includes a special story or meaning behind them. Our culinary teams have embraced this idea and continue to showcase their talents with these delectable sweet treats, from our kitchens to yours.

January Cookies of the Month COCOA-MOLASSES DROP COOKIES Bruce McIntosh - Country Club of Asheville From 1985-2015, H. Robert Sharbaugh was a Member of the Country Club of Asheville and had served time as a Member of the Board for a number of years. He was very well-known and admired by Club Members and staff alike. He meant a great deal to me, especially during my earlier years at the Club. One memory of him that stands out to me, in particular, was the year that, this selfproclaimed chocoholic, gifted me a very old, yet pristine Hershey’s cookbook from 1934 that had been revised and reprinted in 1971. I think of him fondly every time I open the binding to see his name on the inside cover. Thank you for your service to our country and the many laughs throughout the years. This one is for you Mr. Sharbaugh! Yield: Approximately 2-3 Dozen Cookies Ingredients 1/3 Cup Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar 1/3 Cup Molasses 1 Egg 1 cup All-Purpose Flour, sifted 1 TSP Baking Powder 3 TBSP Hershey’s Cocoa Powder, or whatever you have on hand 1/2 Cup Chopped Nuts

February Cookies of the Month CHOCOLATE-DIPPED COCONUT MACAROON John Crawford – Providence Country Club This has been one of my favorite cookie recipes for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my grandmother would make these for us when we would come and visit and while all of the others would devour the chocolate chip cookies, I had these all to myself. If you like coconut and chocolate this recipe is for you! With the toasted outside, creamy inside and smooth chocolate to tie it all together, it cannot get much better. Ingredients 16oz. Sweetened Flaked Coconut 1 cup Sweetened Condensed Milk 1 TSP Vanilla Extract Pinch of Salt 6oz. Semisweet Chocolate Chips 2 Large Egg Whites Directions: Start by mixing the coconut, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and salt thoroughly in a mixing bowl. Next, separate the egg whites from the yolk and beat the egg whites until they form a stiff peak. Gently fold the egg whites into the coconut mixture Using a small scoop, scoop the mixture onto a parchment-lined sheet pan spacing each about 2 inches apart. Place the macaroons in a 325°F preheated oven for 25 minutes, rotating as needed to prevent burning. While macaroons are baking in the oven, melt the chocolate in a double boiler or microwave, stirring frequently. When cookies have cooled completely, dip the bottoms in the melted chocolate and place them on a clean sheet of parchment paper. Enjoy!
