01 . Rabat’s Cultural complex

Located in Rabat, the capital city of Morocco. The project was part of an endeavor to re-imagine the city’s entrance, in a way that is compatible with its grand strategic vision of becoming an international cultural hub that hosts a multitude of major events, all while ensuring a respect for the immediate context and the needs of its community.

Le projet s’inscrit dans le cadre d’un effort visant à réimaginer l’entrée de la ville, d’une manière compatible avec sa grande vision stratégique, celle d’un pôle culturel international accueillant une multitude d’événements majeurs, tout en assurant le respect de son contexte et des besoins des habitants.

ORIENTATIONS : choice of the project /choix du projet :

The planning for the construction of the grand theater of Rabat, and the national archive creates a cultural hub in the Bouregrag valley, while making an integral part of the program of the city of Rabat (City of light Strategy ). This is why the southern part of the city has been chosen as a site for the project in order to create an equilibrium of activities at the city level and to meet the needs of the population in terms of services.

La projection du grand théâtre de rabat, et de l’archive nationale crée un pôle à vocation culturelle au niveau de la vallée Bouregrag, tout en étant une partie intégrante du programme de la ville de Rabat(ville des lumières).

C’est pourquoi le sud du littoral a été choisi comme site d’implantation pour créer un équilibre des activités au niveau de la ville et pour répondre aux besoins de la population en terme d’équipement .

The opposite of the attraction, it allows the project to have an effect vis-a-vis the rest of the city.

Un résultat inverse à celui de l’attraction, ou le projet influence le reste de la ville.

Cultural space as a spatial and social convergence node

L’espace culturel en tant qu’un noeud de convergence spatiale et sociale

The project allows the creation of a symbiosis between multiple elements. This interaction can be reduced to a two dimensional matrix, that groups a social aspect, where different classes can benefit from the project and coexist, and a spatial aspect that blurs the boundaries between the different functions present on site.

Le projet permet de créer une relation de symbiose entre plusieurs éléments. Cette interaction peut être réduite en une matrice deux dimensionnelle, qui regroupe la symbiose sociale peremettante la coextistance des différentes classes sociales et celle spatiale qui essaie d’éliminer la différence entre les différentes fonctions.

- Holistic aspect that offers a multitude of cultural experiences.

The caracteristic of attraction was adopted as a response to the ongoing Rabat’s “urban renewal/overhaul” planning strategy with its aim of enhancing the city’s reputation and transforming it into a cultural hub on the national and international level.

La caractéristique d’attraction du projet est projetée dans une optique complémentaire à celle de la planification de Rabat, dans son objectif de marketing territorial et de transformation de l’agglomération en un pôle culturel à rayonnement national voir même internationale.

The project must not only be a venue for cultural events, but it must create an impetus and play a proactive role to incite créativity and interaction.

Le projet ne doit pas seulement être un lieu de manifestations et événements, mais il doit créer un impetus et jouer un rôle proactif en tant que rotule de créativite et d’intéraction.

interstitial space / espace interstitiel:

The disconnection of built spaces between them creates a void in the form of an interstitial space, separated from the outside public realm, while adopting the role of the latter. It is an uninterrupted transition zone, which makes it possible to cross the site without obstacle, while playing the role of a buffer zone for a fluid, imperceptible passage between exterior and interior. Its porosity thus allows a dialectic between the exterior and the buildings of the complex, as an extension of the two, and as a complement to their uses through its flexible functions.

La déconnection des espaces bâtis entre eux crée un vide sous forme d’un espace interstitiel, qui se distingue de l’extérieur, tout en adoptant le rôle de ce dernier. C’est une zone de transition non-interrompue qui permet de traverser le site sans obstacle, tout en jouant le rôle d’une zone tampon pour un passage fluide non perceptible entre extérieur et intérieur. Sa porosité permet ainsi une dialectique entre l’aménagement extérieur et les bâtiments du complexe, en tant qu’une extension des deux, et comme complement de leurs fonctions à travers son usage flexible.

The porosity of this space ensures uninterrupted circulation at ground level.

The public square was considered with the aim of pushing the visitor to explore the complex by creating an element of convergence of flows, and as a space marking the distinction between the public and private realm. Its profile resembling that of an indentation is the result of wanting to preserve the dissimulation specific to this project, and the introduction of an active space which does not expose its activities directly, to create a sense of discovery for the visitor when he arrives. These activities vary given the surface of the square and its direct link with the interstitial spaces.

La place public était considérée dans le but de pousser le visiteur à explorer le complexe en créant un élément de divergence des flux et comme un espace marquant la distinction entre les différentes fonctions. Son profil en dépression est le résultat de préserver la dissimulation propre à ce projet, et l’introduction d’un espace active mais qui ne montre pas son activité directement, pour étonner le visiteur lors de son arrivé. Ces activités son variantes vu la surface de la place et son lien direct avec l’ espace interstitiel.

The cultural space is not qn insulqted element, but must include the aspect of a public space that accomodates the needs of citizens and allows itself to be integrated into its environment.

In addition to the previous areas, the accessible roof plays a double role, firstly it allows the creation of a homogeneous project with different morphologies secondly it eliminates the hierarchy between the typologies, and lastly it acts as an extension of the public space towards the complex itself, by directing the flow in a non-horizontal way, towards a so-called vertical park.

L’espace culturel n’est pas juste un élément clos, mais doit comprendre l’aspect d’un espace public qui répond aux besoins des citoyens et qui lui permet de s‘intégrer avec son environnement.

These zones thus allow a spillover of the functions of the complex towards the outside.

En plus des zones précédentes, la toiture accessible joue un double rôle, d’emblée en unifiant la morphologie de l’ensemble, à travers l’élimination visuel des différences entre les fonctions, et ainsi comme extension de l’espace public envers le complexe lui-même, en dirigeant le flux d’une manière non horizontale, vers un parc dite vertical.

The plan of the theater was chosen in a functional way.

It’s a horseshoe shape that combines curved and flat walls. This concave change allows sound delivery to less exposed areas. This configuration also allows more places near the stage, and clear sound and less noise since the latter propagates through spherical waves .

Museum / MUSÉE:

The configuration of museums is done in several ways, of which we find the linear one, which dictates the passage undertaken by the visitor.

La configuration des musées se fait de plusieurs façons, dont on trouve celle linéaire, qui dicte le passage entrepris par le visiteur.

Le plan du théâtre était choisi d’une manière fonctionnelle selon une forme de fer à cheval qui combine entre des murs courbés et plats. Ce changement concave permet une délivrance du son aux zones moins exposées. Cette configuration permet ainsi plus de sièges à proximité de la scène, et du son clair vu que ce dernier se propage à travers des ondes sphériques et elle permet aussi moins de bruits.

In addition to the materials used, the curvilinear shape has a very important effect in the reflection of sound to the spaces in the back, something that ensures sound amplification and a consistent experience throughout the auditorium.

En plus des matériaux utilisés la forme curvilinéaire a un effet très important dans la réflexion du son aux espaces situés au fond, chose qui assure une amplification sonore, et un expérience consistente dans l’ensemble de l’auditorium.

Moreover, the change in natural light during the day, creates a differentiated experience according to the person, and according to the weather, something that allows the person to explore at will, without facing spatial configuration constraints.

Ainsi, le changement de la lumière naturelle pendant la journée crée une expérience différenciée selon la personne, et selon le temps, chose qui permet à la personne d’explorer à sa guise, sans faire face a des contraintes de configuration spatiale.

Moreover, a satellite configuration allows a degree of more flexibility, but eliminates the continuity desired by certain exposures.

Ainsi, une configuration en satellite permet un degré plus de flexibilité mais élimine la continuité désirée par certaines expositions.

The solution was to adopt a semi-free plan that uses light as an element of gravity to control the visitor’s itinerary in an organic and natural way.

La solution était d’adopter un plan semi-libre qui utilise la lumière comme élément de gravité pour contrôler la trajectoire du visiteur d’une manière organique et naturelle.

This aspect of non-dictated movement is complemented by the presence of a variety of exhibition spaces, of which we find on the ground floor those which are flexible (linear and non-linear, according to need), and the patios which play the role of outdoor exhibition spaces.

Pour ce qui est de l’étage, des espaces d’exposition à lumière différenciée étaient adoptés pour choisir le degré et la nature d’éclairage propre aux œuvres d’art.

. filling the void in the medina

Nested in the heart of the ancient Medina of Fez, in an abandoned plot of land, the project was intended as a solution for a changing work and lifestyle dynamic in a post-pandemic context. With these constraints in minds, we envisioned a project that can satisfy the needs of the citizens through an “Integrated life unit“ given the lack of services in their purview, and as a solution to inject a commercial and social dynamic by including a co-working space to attract non-residents and residents alike.

Situé au cœur de l’ancienne Médina de Fès, dans une parcelle abandonnée, le projet est une réponse aux changements de mode de travail et de vie dans un contexte post-pandémie. À travers ces contraintes, nous avons envisagé un projet pouvant répondre aux besoins des citoyens à travers une “Unité de vie intégrée” vu le manque des équipements de proximité, et comme solution pour injecter une dynamique commerciale et sociale à travers un espace de coworking pour attirer les non-résidents.

The idea of the project is to translate the macrocosm of the Medina into a microcosm which is the distillation of the traditional network into a small scale project. This translation has a double function, a formal one to preserve the visual aspect of the site by introducing a similar network, and preserve the urban and syntactic configuration, and a second function that results in the creation of a modular and multi-functional space that is suitable for the sanitary situation and the needs of users through dynamic spaces, which are physically separated but complement each other in terms of function. The program of the project was also divided in two to create a complex that responds to the architectural parti. First, there is a co-working space whose layout consists of flexible workspaces (aggregation of spaces, decentralization of offices , accommodating work from a distance ...) and the textuality of the Medina fabric. And a local services complex as a response to the needs of the inhabitants of the Medina, through a compression of several functions into a single integrated and intramural unit.

L’idée de l’aménagement est de traduire le macrocosme de la Médina en un microcosme qui est la dilution du réseau médiale à une échelle réduite. Cette traduction a double fonction, une formelle pour préserver l’aspect visuel du contexte d’implantation en introduisant une mise en réseau similaire, et préserver la configuration urbaine et syntactique, et une deuxième fonction qui se traduit en la création d’un espace modulaire et multifonctionnelle qui est adapté à la situation sanitaire et les besoins des usagers à travers des espaces dynamiques, qui sont séparés physiquement mais complémentaires en termes de fonction. L’aménagement du projet a aussi était divisé en deux pour créer un complexe qui répond au parti architectural. En premier temps on trouve un espace de coworking dont l’aménagement est le mariage entre les solutions tendancieuses pour la création des espaces de travail flexibles (de-densification des espaces, décentralisation des offices, travailler à la maison et proche de la maison) et la textualité du tissu médina. Ainsi on a les équipements de proximité comme réponse aux besoins des habitants de la Médina, à travers une compression de plusieurs fonctions en une seule unité intégrée et intra-muros.

Given the absence of a closing wall, an adobe brick undulating wall was added that is reminiscent of traditional rammed earth architecture, all while providing a new aesthetic that indicates movement and evolution through its organic relief.

Vu l’absence d’un mur de clôture, un mur ondulé en briques d’adobe a été ajouté qui rappelle l’architecture traditionnelle en pisé, tout en offrant une nouvelle esthétique qui indique le mouvement et l’évolution par sa forme organique.

Situated in the Souss-Massa region, known for its agricultural activities despite the arid climate, the brief required us to future-proof the expansion of a small city that acts as a hub for the surroundings villages in a way that will stimulate the local economy and makes it competitive on the regional scale.

Situé dans la région de Souss-Massa, qui est connue pour ses activités agricoles malgré le climat aride. Le projet porte sur l’aménagement d’un petit centre urbain qui sert comme pôle de services pour les villages environnants d’une manière qui va stimuler l’économie locale et la rendre compétitive à l’échelle régionale.

The site is located in the Souss-Massa region, between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. Its position is strategic in relation to the economic and socio-cultural aspects.

Given its location in the Souss plateau the site has significant economic potential based on its natural resources and its pre-established agricultural economy despite the dry climate.

Le site se situe dans la région Souss-Massa entre le Haut Atlas et l’anti-atlas Son positionnement est stratégique par rapport aux niveaux économique et socioculturel. Vu sa localisation dans la pleine Souss, le site recèle d’importantes potentialités économiques basées sur ses ressources naturelles et ses possibilités dans le domaine de l’agriculture, malgré le climat sec.

At the provincial level, the center of Sidi Moussa is located at the intersection of the RP 1707 and 1708, which places it between the two major urban hubs of the region (Taroudant and Agadir), with a strategic position in relation to the various natural resources, including the Oued Souss.

Using satellite views, there is a significant growth in the surface used for agricultural activities in the Souss plateuax between the years of 1984-2020, something that shows the importance of this activity for the local economy despite the dry climate of the region.

These spatial models are used to analyze, describe, and explain, as well as investigate empirical phenomena, such as urban movement, urban crime, and the centrality of places, and the intelligibility of places.

À travers les vues satellitaires, on constate une croissance importante dans la suarface exploitée pour les activités agricoles dans la plaine Souss pendant la période de 1984-2020, chose qui montre l’importance de cette activité pour l’économie locale malgré le climat sec de la région.

patrimony and modernity

The project was part of a studio concerning the study of the ancient urban and architectural heritage of the city of Fez. Our brief was to choose an old Riad (traditional habitat) regardless of its state and function and to re-invision it in the context of the 21st century.

Ce projet était le résultat d’un travail dans un atelier concernant l’étude de l’ancien patrimoine urbain et architectural de la ville de Fès. L’objectif était de choisir un ancien Riad indépendamment de son état et de sa fonction et de le ré-envisager dans le contexte du 21ème siècle.

The urban composition of the Medina is the result of a non-centralized community planing something manifested in a morphology which isn’t the result of a predefined road map. Thus this patchwork of traditional urbanism reflects the culture and tradition of its inhabitants through a hidden and intimate framework of interwoven elements.

La composition urbanistique de la Medina est le résultat d’une volonté comunautaire chose manifesté dans une morphologie qui n’est pas le résultat d’un tracé viaire . Ainsi le mailage reflète la culture et la tradition de ses habitants à travers une ossature cachée et intime.

Modernity accompanies changing urban forms. An analogy to make is that of cracking, something that creates a more airy and less intimate fabric.

La modernité accompagne un changement des formes urbaines . Une analogie à faire est celle de la fissuration, chose qui crée un tissu plus aéré et moins intime.

The typology in the study area has morphed over time, through the change in land use, which explains the scattered green spaces. The latter being JNANS(gardens) of the old residences re appropriated by the neoclassical habitat.

La typologie dans l’aire d’étude a connu une mutation qu fil du temps , par le changement de l’occupation du sol ce qui explique les espaces verts eparpillés . Ces derniers étant des jnans des anciennes demeures reappropriés par l’habitat neo-classique.

The Zyat fabric is characterized by the presence of 2 types of roads, in the form of motorized and pedestrian ways, unlike the rest of the Medina which has multiple types of roads according to their degree of intimacy.

Le tissu zyat se caractérise par la présence de 2 types de voiries qui s’articulent entre elles ,et qui se manifestent sous forme de voies carrossables et piétonnes. Contrairement à l’ancienne Médina qui se hiérarchise en plusieurs voies selon leurs degrés d’intimité .

The site consists in its entirety of construction in the form of habitat, which is structured around voids in the form of multiple patios.

05 . illuminating volubilis

As a part of a 3 day competition organized by IGGUZINI, we were asked to design a scenic light project for the archaeological site of Volubilis as a way to re-invision patrimony within a context that accommodates both heritage and innovation , and allows a continuity between the past and the present.

Dans le cadre d’un compétition de 3 jours organisée par IGGUZINI , il nous a été demandé de concevoir un projet d’aménagement de lumière pour le site archéologique de Volubilis afin de ré-envisager le patrimoine dans un contexte qui accueille à la fois le patrimoine et l’innovation, et qui permet une continuité entre le passé et le présent.

Volubilis is an archaeological site listed as a UNESCO Universal Heritage Site that presents several distinct historical periods (Amazigh, Roman and Mauritanian Carthaginian), and is located in the plain of SAÏSS in Morocco, on the banks of the Rhoumane wadi, a river in the outskirts of Meknes, not far from the city of Moulay Driss Zerhoun.

The site presents an archeological snapshot of varying moments in history within a preserved environment , that unfortunately bears the traces of a spatial and temporal imbalance that is not difficult to notice, which testifies to a neglect of these ancient traces. Hence the need for preservation . To do this, and in order to highlight the importance of the landscape, we opted for an ephemeral installation that aims during the day to ensure the gradual disappearance of its dominant ruins(i.e. Basilica and Forum), in the spirit of maintaining a balance of the visiting experience of the site so as not to constitute a visual obstacle in the overall landscape, and during the night through a kind of light show that aims to enhance the points previously mentioned and give the site a new face: that of light.

Volubilis est un site archéologique inscrit au patrimoine universel de l’UNESCO qui présente plusieurs périodes historiques distinctes (amazighes, carthaginoise romaine et mauritanienne), situé dans la plaine du SAÏSS au Maroc, sur les bords de l’oued Rhoumane, rivière de la banlieue de Meknès, non loine de la ville de Moulay Driss Zerhoun.

Le site fait figure de moments d’histoire au sein d’un territoire sauvegardé qui malheureusement porte les traces d’un déséquilibre spatial et temporel qui n’est pas difficile à remarquer, ce qui témoigne d’une négligence à l’égard de ces traces anciennes.D’où la nécessité d’une préservation et valorisation. Pour ce faire, et afin de mettre le paysage en valeur, nous avons opté pour une installation éphémère qui vise-le jour- la disparition progressive en de ses points dominants, dans l’esprit de l’entretien d’une perspective du site de façon à ne pas constituer un obstacle visuel dans le paysage et -le soir- un jeu de lumière qui va créer une sorte de spectacle lumineux qui vise à valoriser les points précédemment cités et donner au site un nouveau visage : celui de la lumière.

Indicate the location of the missing fortifying walls by means of light markers, to create a visual limit, and contextualize the visit during nigh-time .

Create a balance between absence and presence of light during night-time by adopting varying light sources with different luminance intensities (the more intense the more focal is the space ).

Always within the framework of the duality of gravity/lightness present on site, the installation stimulates the earth-sky relationship through two different light scenarios. A natural one during the day, and an artificial (diffused) one during at night.

Toujours en interpellation avec cette dualité de gravité /légèreté présente sur site, l’installation stimule la relation terre-ciel à travers deux scénarios de lumière différente. Une naturelle pendant la journée, et une artificielle(diffusée) pendant la nuit.

Mosen’s night lamp is an eco-friendly device that provides about 60w of zero-electrivity lighting, made by rudimentary means.

A simple transparent plastic container more chloride from the water, creates a self-diffusing and rechargable light source.

The choice of this device will allow us to ensure a larger surface of action, while eliminating the technical constraints of feeding.

La lampe nocturne de Mosen est un dispositif écologique qui fournit un éclairage d’environ 60w à zero-électrcité, faconnée par des moyens rudimentaires. Un simple contenaire en plastique transparent plus de chlorure de l’eau, crée une source lumineuse autosiffusante et rechargable.

Le choix de ce dispositif nous permettra d’assurer une plus grande surface d’action, toute en éleminant les contraintes techniques d’alimentation.

06 . Bench Design

Intended for the context of an architecture school. The project’s brief required the design of a bench with an industrial streamlined look , all while servicing the needs of the students, and offering a much needed aesthetic befitting an architecture school.

Destiné au contexte d’une école d’architecture. L’objectif du projet était une conception qui offre un look industriel, tout en répondant aux besoins des étudiants et en offrant une esthétique digne d’une école d’architecture.

The concept/le concept:

The design is an analogue to the structure of a building, which conveys a sort of symbolism through the spatial configuration of its elements, as well as through its materials.

C’est une analogue physique de la composition structurelle d’un bâtiment, qui reflète un symbolisme à travers sa configuration spatiale et l’agencement de ses éléments constiutifs, ainsi qu’à travers ses matériaux .

The bench comprises a “foundation”, which is the element that will support the loads exerted by the user, and will insure the structural integrity of the overall design. In addition, the recesses lend a sense of lightness that contrasts the monolithic nature of the concrete block, and operate as a receptacle for portfolio cases used by the students.

Le banc se compose d’une “fondation”, un élément qui supporte les charges produites par l’usager, et assure l’intégrité structurelle de l’ensemble. En outre les niches jouent un double rôle, pour atténuer la monolithie, ainsi que servir comme réceptacle des porte-plans des étudiants.

The “slab” is a platform for the superstructure elements, and is a simple rectangular piece that acts as the interface between the top and bottom.

La “dalle”, qui sert comme plateforme de repose des éléments de superstructure, et une simple pièce rectangulaire qui agit comme interface entre le dessus et le dessous.

The “columns” are the support of the “ceiling”. The adopted form is that of a hyperboloid, in order to evoke lightness without compromising structural integrity. They can also be lit at night to offer a meeting point for the users and to allow easy identification.

Les “poteaux” assurent le support du “plafond”. Leur forme est un hyperboloïde, pour evoquer une forme legère, et assurer la stabilité sans compromettre l’esthétique. Ils peuvent également être éclairés la nuit pour offrir un point de rencontre aux utilisateurs et permettre une identification facile.

The “ceiling” is the seat of the user. It’s characterized with a gentle slope that accommodates different body positions.

Le “plancher” est l’assise des usagers. Il se caractérise par une courbe legère, afin d’assurer un usage différencié selon la position corporelle de la personne.

The top component is composed of a waffle structure of aluminum profiles that acts as a supporting frame for the metallic outer cover which will be CNC manufactured

During a 15 day workshop in Tamaseloht (Marrakech), I took part in the restoration of an ancient QSAR using ancestral techniques and materials, all while receiving various lectures from professionals in the field about the importance of heritage restoration.
