HEAD OF SCHOOL’S REPORT INSPIRING THE IMAGINATION AND COURAGE TO EXCEL, TO REACH, TO LEAD, TO CARE
We want the world to know that this is not an ordinary school, and it is not for ordinary girls. Balmoral Hall School is for girls who do not accept the status quo. We want them here, regardless of their circumstance, because we know they are going to do something tremendous in this world. We are building a community that will help girls acquire the skills they need to pursue their purpose no matter what it is or where it takes them. This is the objective of our strategic framework, which will guide us into the future.
A GLOBALLY RECOGNIZED AND TRUSTED BRAND
With your support, all of this is possible.
Parents trust us to personalize the educational experience of each girl, to care for each girl, to challenge her to grow, to build a supportive community around her, and – most importantly – to prepare her for the future.
Tell your BH story, whether you are a student, alumna, parent, grandparent, or teacher. Support girls’ education by getting involved in our associations, mentoring a student, or attending school events. Help us offer a personalized education to every girl of promise by giving to one of our fundraising areas.
AN UNLIMITED LEARNING COMMUNITY Balmoral Hall School fully prepares girls for that future by offering the most innovative educational experience. A CULTURE OF PHILANTHROPY AND FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY It’s a bold future, one that our school community supports through their generosity.
2 BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL | 2017/18 ANNUAL REVIEW
If you want to know what that really looks like, you do not need to look far. It’s right here, and it has been here since 1901.
We take teaching and learning personally. Balmoral Hall School has personalized learning since 1901. We always will. Today, in our 117th school year, the field of personalized learning continues to evolve, and so will we. Fall is a wonderful time for reflection. After all, this is the start of a new chapter in Balmoral Hall School’s story. There are some skills you can’t learn in a classroom. That’s why BH girls need a new space to be curious and creative, solve problems, and build confidence. continued on page 3

arts, and mathematics (STEAM) is a strategic priority.
We will complete our Centre for Arts & Design in a few months’ time, and thanks to you they will try new things, fail, and learn from it.
For example, our Grade 3 students are using Osmo kits to draw their self-portraits, and their enthusiasm for bridging the digital and physical worlds from an iPad to a sketchpad is awe-inspiring.
According to National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS), girls’ school graduates are six times more likely to consider majoring in science, technology, and mathematics, and three times more likely to consider careers in engineering, than their peers at coed schools. This research tells us that girls’ schools foster interest in historically male-dominated STEM subjects. By introducing girls to these underrepresented subjects, while integrating arts, they experience the fulfilment of a rigorous education. Visit us to see for yourself that girls’ learning in science, technology, engineering,
This is how we prepare BH girls for careers that have yet to be invented! Their competence, their confidence, and their connectedness is evident. I believe that, together, they will excel, they will reach, they will lead, and they will care. As they begin to see how they fit into a future where creativity will be one of their greatest assets, they need us, all of us, to continue pursuing excellence, together. Let’s inspire greatness, shall we? Their future awaits.
WHY WE GIVE By Joanne & Rod Kamins It’s important to us that we support what we believe in. As a family that believes a balanced education is the foundation for a better future locally and beyond, we choose to support current and future BH girls in their varied areas of interest. Students will benefit from the learning opportunities to be offered in the Centre for Arts & Design. The thought that our gift will help students explore their interests in this ever-changing, fast-paced era of innovation is what compels us to give. By supporting the campaign, we hope to enable them to strive for and achieve success throughout their academic journey.
Joanne Kamins Head of School
It’s our way of giving back to the school community that gives us such joy.

BOARD CHAIR’S REPORT We are seeing Balmoral Hall School like never before. Students are being asked to consider who, not what, they will become. What a powerful conversation starter! If you told me at 17 that I would become Chair of Balmoral Hall School’s Board of Governors, I probably would not have believed you. In fact, I would have responded with: “Well, that’s a man’s job, isn’t it?” And yet I wanted to become a businesswoman like my mother, Gail (Burrows) Cipryk Gr. 11 ’56, who, working in a man’s world, was ahead of her time. So, who have I become? As a daughter, I am so blessed that my parents sent me to Balmoral Hall as a lifer, supported me always, and are exceptional role models at work and in our community. As a wife, I am happy and content with a very loving husband, Greg, who also supports me, understanding my inner drive to achieve and be a role model for our girls. As a mother, I am so proud of who Lura and Natalie are becoming as confident, well-spoken, and caring human beings. As a leader in my community, I have high expectations to give back to a community that has given me so much. I have been very fortunate in life; however, it has been engrained in me to give back and to make a difference. Nothing will change unless we take action, and so we must lead by example. As your Chair, I am inspired. You inspire me with your pride as we become a globally recognized and trusted brand. You inspire me with your eagerness to try new things, fail, and learn from it as we build an unlimited learning community. You inspire me with your generosity as we create a culture of philanthropy and financial sustainability. Let’s continue to inspire girls’ imagination and the courage to excel, to reach, to lead, and to care.

16 BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL | 2017/18 ANNUAL REVIEW

FOUNDATION CHAIR’S REPORT Recently, I was in Halifax, where my hotel window looked out over the harbour. Some very large cruise and cargo ships were docked. At the time, I was contemplating what to write for this report, and it struck me that these ships are like young students, and the harbour, a school. While docked, the ships are being improved, maintained, and stocked for their voyage. Once ready, a pilot boat guides them out of the harbour and into the open seas to fend for themselves on their way to their next port. What a great metaphor for how BH prepares girls for a world where they must find their own way and exercise their independence. Each girl needs, and hopefully gets, an education that matches her unique characteristics and prepares her for whatever it takes to succeed on her voyage. Of course, there will be unexpected circumstances, stormy patches, and it may be difficult to stay on course, but their experience and preparation at BH, no matter how long ago, will help guide them. The focus of the BH Foundation is to bring as many girls as possible, whose financial situation would otherwise not allow them to attend BH, into our harbour and prepare them for their voyage. These girls must show some special potential, and their family’s financial situation must be proven limited. The Foundation believes that it is our obligation to do what we can for these girls as if they were our own. We must not let a girl’s negative circumstance dictate a limited future.
