BLAZERS PREP HOCKEY 2014-2015
BALMORAL HALL SCHOOL DEVELOPMENTAL HOCKEY Balmoral Hall is excited to offer the Blazers Hockey Development program for the sixth year. For the first time ever, we have opened the program up to include non-BH students as well. This program is an opt-in, fee based program for girls in grades 6 to 9 (ages 10-14). We believe that the time spent onice focusing on skill development, conditioning, and 4×4 play is an ideal combination for a pre-season training program. During the on-ice sessions, students are led through a progression of skills that focus on developing their hockey abilities. Progression of these skills will focus on individual technical skills as well as team tactics. Athletes are provided with a skill evaluation sheet upon completion of the on-ice sessions to assist in furthering their development. Coaching staff for the program include current players and coaching staff, in addition to former NCAA and CIS players. The combined achievements of these instructors include playing for Team Canada, Team Manitoba, and NCAA championships. Most of all, the instructors will share a passion and enthusiasm for hockey and helping young players grow.
“Coming to Balmoral Hall has been so significant to my life not only because I am able to play the sport I love at a higher level, but because the school changed my perspective on life. It taught me how to make my dreams a reality, and for that I am thankful.” ~Kaytlin Drews ’07, Blazers Prep Team

BH Blazers Varsity Prep Hockey The Blazers Varsity Prep hockey team was founded in 2006 – 2007. They found success early, with victory coming in their very first game against the Thunder Bay Queens. During the 2008 – 2009 season the Varsity Prep team joined the Junior Women’s Hockey League ( JWHL) which is comprised of teams from Saskatchewan, Vermont, British Columbia, Colorado, Washington, and Alberta. In their first season in the league the Blazers won the West Division and finished as league finalists. During this same season the Varsity Prep hockey team recorded their 100th lifetime win in just three seasons. Individual Prep student-athletes have also enjoyed success with BH players/alumnae being named to a Team Canada Roster 17 times, and BH players/alumnae being named to a Team Manitoba Roster 48 times. In addition to provincial and national level recognition, in the 9 years of the Prep team’s existence, more than 26 BH Varsity Prep team graduates are playing at the CIS or NCAA level on academic and/or athletic scholarships.
“In my opinion, Balmoral Hall is one of the top schools in the country for an elite hockey player to develop. Not only is it known for its prestigious status in the classroom, but also for its excellent staff and teachers who are always doing everything in their power to help you suceed. The BH Blazers play in top-of-the line facilities, and are an astounding hockey program that will help female hockey players truly reach their full potential.” Bailey Bram ’08, Team Canada

Coaching Staff GERRY WILSON
DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY / HEAD COACH VARSITY PREP TEAM Gerry Wilson brings an extensive hockey background as well as a unique and rich business acumen to his role as Director of Hockey and Head Coach of the Varsity Prep Blazers. His playing background includes Junior as well as Collegiate hockey across Canada and the US. Teams included Winnipeg South Blues (MJHL), Calgary Chinooks (AJHL), Calgary Wranglers (WHL), Spokane Flyers (WHL), and the Wisconsin Badgers (NCAA). Gerry’s coaching experience within female hockey spans close to 20 years. He has held head coaching positions at all levels of minor female hockey as well as Midget AA, AAA, and High School. In his first year with the Blazers he coached the team to one of the most successful seasons ever with a 21 – 8 – 2 record, good for second overall in the JWHL. Gerry received a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) from the University of Manitoba with a double major in finance and marketing. He has acquired over 20 years of experience in marketing and strategic planning. This serves to compliment his hockey background and ensure that the vision of long term growth and excellence within the program is attained. Gerry has been involved in the hockey program at BH since its inception. As both a parent and an advisor to the hockey committee he has seen the program evolve into what it is today. He has had three daughters graduate from the hockey program. One at the Varsity Prep level and two at the Junior Varsity level. This extensive involvement at all levels has allowed him to gain valuable insight into the female hockey landscape both in Canada and the US. In 2013, Gerry attended the High Performance 1 Coaching Clinic, Hockey Canada’s most elite coaching seminar. The clinic, which is by invitation only, occurs once every 2 years and brings together many of Manitoba’s elite level coaches and also involves a number of high performance athletes both male and female many of whom are already at the national level.
SARAH ZACHARIAS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM COORDINATOR / ASSOCIATE COACH VARSITY PREP Sarah Zacharias joins Balmoral Hall School as former alum of the Varsity Prep Program (20072008). When Sarah wasn’t playing hockey or studying she spent her time helping coach the Jr. Purple Eagles Program as well as working with SABAH (Special Athletes Big at Heart), an organization that teaches mentally and physically disabled participants the game of hockey. After returning to Winnipeg, Sarah began working with the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Academy, a not-forprofit organization that teaches fundamental and development hockey to students ages 7-14. Sarah also joined the coaching staff of the MFMHL AAA Winnipeg Ice as the Assistant Coach, primarily working with the Defense and Special Teams units. Sarah worked with the Ice for two seasons before coming back to her alma mater as the Development Program Coordinator and the Associate Coach of Varsity Prep Hockey. Balmoral Hall helped teach me how to balance scheduling athletics and academics at the same time. My school prepared me academically for university by offering experienced teachers and a challenging curriculum. On the ice BH challenged me to keep improving and also gave me the exposure I needed to be recognized by universities both in the States and in Canada.
