HEAD OF SCHOOL’S MESSAGE JOANNE KAMINS

2016/17 was a benchmark for the school community; the 2012–17 strategic vision reached its term, and consultations began for a bold strategy to guide Balmoral Hall beyond 2017. To understand the scope of this five-year milestone, consider these parameters: 3 six strategic goals; 3 10 strategic priorities; and 3 30 tactical actions. Early on, it was evident to all stakeholders that this strategic vision was not meant to rest on a shelf in my office. Governors and administrators alike were prepared to prevent that through ongoing effort. On behalf of everyone who took ownership of the following deliverables, thank you for helping us to accomplish this.

1

WE PROVIDE A PERSONALIZED ACADEMIC PROGRAM THAT IS RIGOROUS, RELEVANT, AND RESEARCH-BASED

Students prepare for academic success through the provision of a strong foundation, as well as enriched programming. Subject area curricula from Kindergarten to Grade 12 are vertically aligned. Thanks, especially, to the implementation of our Capstone educational model, BH girls confidently prepare for 2

Advanced Placement (AP) studies. The Centre for Learning was established, and programming is personalized for almost one-third of students. We intend to continue this work so that all BH girls benefit from personalization in the near future. Programming priorities include girls’ learning, assessment, inquiry, technology, and academic language study.

2 3

WE PREPARE GIRLS TO MAKE CONFIDENT, INFORMED CHOICES ABOUT POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

From 2012–17, a university guidance curriculum was fully implemented in Senior School, and in Middle School it is in early stages of implementation. Career awareness experiences begin in Junior School. Opportunities for students to connect with universities, complete internships, and find mentors remain works in progress. WE DIRECT FINANCE ACCORDING TO STRATEGY

With a budget set annually in October, delivery follows a relevant reporting structure. Enrolment increased to more than 500 students, including at least 70 boarding students. Endowment increased by more than $1.5 million. More than $4 million has been raised to date to build a Centre for Arts & Design on campus thanks to annual and major gifts. Also of note is that annual depreciation expenses have been fully funded within the last five years. While plans for capital funding are in place, a master campus plan is still in long range development.

4 5

WE FOSTER AN ENGAGED COMMUNITY OF SCHOOL AMBASSADORS

Since 2012, strategic communication emphasizes our expertise in girls’ education through publicized successes and resulting engagement, thanks, especially, to the continued support of Balmoral Hall Parent Association (BHPA). With an increased online presence, due in large part to trends in social media, the marketing strategy is progressively digital. Storytelling is a priority in terms of community relations, which continue to demand our attention regionally and world-wide.

WE CREATE FACILITIES THAT INSPIRE LEARNING

Commitments to planned, purposeful facilities were made throughout the last five years, including refurbished classrooms, $2 million in renovations to the boarding house, an established Centre for Learning, state-of-the-art maker spaces such as the science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) laboratory in Junior School, heritage conservation of Aikins House, grounds-keeping, and more. Deferred maintenance is being addressed by evolving capital improvement plans. A technology review was completed, which resulted in outsourcing support services, the adoption of Office 365, and other advancements such as hardware upgrades. In five years, Balmoral Hall has transformed into a 24/7 learning environment. As such, staffing will need to be continually reassessed to accommodate increased demand.

6

WE SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS AS INNOVATIVE, LIFELONG LEARNERS WHO DEMONSTRATE OUR MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES IN THOUGHT AS WELL AS ACTION

In five years, professional development for faculty and staff has become highly specific, as a continuous, three-year plan ensures that professional development is relevant to all employees. Faculty salaries are benchmarked to Winnipeg School Division, while staff salaries are set according to a merit matrix. Human resource management provides oversight.

2017 & BEYOND

Given the collective success experienced throughout the school community from 2012–17, I am confident that there is much to look forward to in the next few years as we implement a responsive strategic vison. Without your support, none of this would be possible. Let’s continue to seek better things, together. Thanks to you, the best of Balmoral Hall is yet to come!

FOUNDATION CHAIR’S MESSAGE JIM PERCHALUK

Sending your daughter to Balmoral Hall is a big investment, and I believe it is worth every penny. As parents, we have been lucky enough to work our way into a position to afford this incredible opportunity for our girls. There are, however, some girls who have shown great promise but whose circumstances cannot support this investment. By way of some generous donors, the foundation’s endowment fund has been able to help cover tuition costs for a small number of select girls. These girls have gone on to do remarkable things, and, along the way, they have become a key part of the fabric of Balmoral Hall with a positive influence on their classmates, as well as the community. For many years, as a Board member, I was part of a team ensuring the school was financially sustainable in delivering a first-rate education. I occasionally heard about another financial area of the school — that is, the foundation and its endowment fund. The goal of the fund is to provide girls of promise with means to attend Balmoral Hall despite financial circumstance.

2016/17 annual review

I was struck by how generous people were to donate to the endowment in the hopes of allowing girls they have never met to enrol here. Not until I heard the stories of these BH girls, who express such gratitude, did I start to understand. These donors go to sleep every night knowing that they made a life-changing difference for girls who could not have done this without them. Thank you to the many donors who have contributed to our efforts. In five years, the endowment fund has grown from $1 million to $2.57 million. Now, our goal is $5 million by 2020. If you feel as strongly as I do that all girls of promise must be able to attend the school, regardless of economic factors, then please contact me at legacy@balmoralhall.ca.

NAMED FUNDS Many of our donors choose to establish named funds as a lasting tribute to friends, family, or former teachers. Named funds provide bursary support for girls of promise who would otherwise not have access to a BH education. A named endowment fund may be established through a gift of $50,000 or more, which can be pledged over three to five years. Anyone can make a donation to a fund that has already been established. A full description of our named funds can be found online. Some donors choose to support the school during their lifetime, while others make provisions to support through estate gifts as members of Meliora Petens Legacy Society. AUDITORS’ REPORT October 2, 2017 INDEPENDENT AUDITORS’ REPORT To the Board of Governors of Balmoral Hall School: Report on the Financial Statements We have audited the accompanying consolidated financial statements of the Balmoral Hall School, which comprise the consolidated statement of financial position as at June 30, 2017 and June 30, 2016, the consolidated statements of operations and changes in fund balances and cash flows for the years then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. Managementʹs Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these consolidated financial statements in accordance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not‐for‐Profit Organizations and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of consolidated financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these consolidated financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the consolidated financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the consolidated financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the consolidated financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditors consider internal control relevant to the entityʹs preparation and fair presentation of the consolidated financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entityʹs internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the consolidated financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Balmoral Hall School as at June 30, 2017 and June 30, 2016, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with Canadian Accounting Standards for Not‐for‐Profit Organizations.

BOARD CHAIR’S MESSAGE NANCY CIPRYK ’86 This is a storied moment in school history when women hold a three-quarters majority of governors’ seats. Our daughters benefit from the governance of such strong, confident women. This would have been unheard of when my mother, Gail (Burrows) Cipryk Gr. 11 ’56, attended Balmoral Hall, and it would have been written off as highly unlikely even whilst I was a student here in the 1970s and ’80s. With this three-generation legacy, I am humbled to lead Balmoral Hall School’s Board of Governors as Chair. I wish to acknowledge, as well, Ditte (Lansky) Cloutier ’66, who was the first alumna in this role. I am now the second.

This school builds community unlike any other. Much has changed since I enrolled here in 1974, and a new strategic vision (2017–20) promises further innovation. Some things, though, such as creativity, risk-taking, and collaboration, are constants. I hope you agree that these are what matter most. Of course, without continued support from the fathers of BH girls past and present, including my father, Mr. Robert Cipryk, my husband, Mr. Greg Klassen, and my contemporaries, Mr. Bruce King, Mr. Tyler Gompf, and Dr. Anthony Battad, we would not be where we are today.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS June 30, 2017 marked the retirement of past governors, Mr. Allan Dubyts, Mr. Chris Isford, and Mrs. Christine Pavagadhi, with our appreciation for their service to the school community. We are pleased to welcome Ms Joelle Foster ’86, Dr. Pita Tingey, and Dr. Vanessa Warne to Balmoral Hall School’s 2017/18 Board of Governors. Ms Nancy Cipryk ’86, Chair Mrs. Joy Loewen, Past Chair Dr. Anthony Battad Ms Joelle Foster ’86 Mrs. Kelly Gasmen Mr. Tyler Gompf Ms Carla Goncalo ’01 Ms Stacey Grocholski, Parent Association President Mr. Bruce King Ms Joan (Rankin) Richardson ’69 Mrs. Marilyn R. Robinson Dr. Pita Tingey Dr. Vanessa Warne Mrs. Laura (Lemon) Wetton ’03 Mrs. Joanne Kamins, Head of School (Ex Officio) Mrs. Trish Del Grosso Steeds, Executive Assistant

Here and now, we are positioning Balmoral Hall School as the best choice for girls’ education. We encourage lifelong learning in a place of belonging that nurtures resilience, inspires creativity, and celebrates diversity. To do so, we maintain global standards of academic excellence through a variety of accreditations. Still, we envision a greater future with confidence the best is still to come.
