Dear Members, This time last year, I shared a graph showing our net Resident A, B, and D membership to illustrate what our attrition looks like throughout the year and why it is so important to propose your friends for membership. I thought it might be interesting to see current numbers side by side. The Club has come a long way in 12 months, and I wanted to thank the membership for your continued support. ◆

ALIGNMENT YOGA FOR GOLFERS By Rebecca Printen, Therapeutic Yoga Instructor
Yoga has a wealth of benefits for golfers. If you enjoy playing golf, here is how yoga can help: MENTAL FOCUS. Yoga incorporates meditation which helps calm the mind and increase concentration. The ability to work with the mind can be taken off the mat and onto the course. FLEXIBILITY. Being flexible can help with any sport, especially to prevent injuries. The golf swing coils and uncoils the spine over the lower body. Good flexibility equals more power behind your swing. BALANCE. Along with improved balance, yoga also helps with stability. A strong golf swing must include stability. Good stability and balance will increase your confidence on the course. STRENGTH & ENDURANCE. Yoga requires strength. To get in and out of poses and hold them—the body builds strength. Yoga increases muscle strength in the entire body, but especially the core. Using yoga to improve your game helps you understand how to use your body on the course. When you find the connection between breath, mind, and body, you’ll find your game has risen to a new level. Join Rebecca Monday nights at 6:00pm for Alignment Yoga for Golfers (Pre-registration is required via the Fitness and/or Club Calendar). ◆
Your Success is Our Success In the winter of 2019, the Fitness & Wellness Team added a new offering, Alignment Yoga for Golfers (AYG). Now entering its fourth year under the guidance of Instructor Rebecca Printen, AYG is still going strong. There is a consistent and loyal group of followers that have made notable progress in their physical and emotional approach to golf thanks to AYG. The participants have endured despite having to make many changes to the routine because of COVID-19; first was moving out of the upstairs studio (next to the Men’s and Ladies' Locker rooms) to the lawn, then zooming from home, back to the studio with masks on, and then in the Tennis Pro Shop during construction. Without
Rebecca’s willingness to be flexible, how much she cares for all participants, and the improvement her pupils have made, AYG would not have endured. Golfers, it seems to me, are an obsessive breed who are always looking for any edge. AYG emphasizes improving flexibility, strength, and balance. Besides helping one’s golf swing and game, doing AYG helps prevent injuries as well as quicker recovery when they occur. All this is accomplished under Rebecca’s steady hand in a fun, safe, and enjoyable environment each Monday evening for one hour. Give it a try. Bob Shriver, BCC Member

BCC CADDIE PROGRAM Take a Caddie, Change a Life
As we begin the Baltimore Country Club golf season, the Golf Team would like to take this opportunity to congratulate BCC caddie Kendall Opheikens for being named a 2022 Evans Scholar recipient. Kendall is the Club's fourth recipient of this prestigious, life-changing scholarship in the past five years. Fellow BCC caddies and Evans Scholarship recipients Samantha Lannon, Varada Maulkin, and Rebecca Lannon welcome Kendall to this special group of young men and women throughout the country.
2021-2022
Evans Scholars Foundation PROGRAM OVERVIEW SENDING CADDIES TO COLLEGE
Established in 1930 by the Western Golf Association and celebrated amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr., the Evans Scholars Foundation awards full tuition and housing college scholarships to high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. This is the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies.
BCC caddies and Evans Scholarship recipients Varada Maulkin (2021), Rebecca Lannon (2021), and Samantha Lannon (2017)
Kendall will graduate this summer from Overlea High School. She is one of eight children. In addition to caddying, she has grown her hobby of crocheting into a side business. Kendall plans to join Varada and Rebecca at the University of Maryland to study PreMed in the fall. This past season, BCC had over 3,400 caddie rounds. We would like to see that number grow even more. Our members' impact on the young men and women in our community is life-changing. A small percentage of our caddies will receive the Evans Scholarship, but all will benefit from our members allowing them to caddie. Many of our former caddies have gone on to become PGA Professionals. For example, Danny Murphy, Bryan Martin, and Cedric Bailey were once caddies at BCC. That is why we say, “Take a Caddie, Change a Life!” Contact our Caddie Manager Brett Keller at bkeller@bcc1898.com the next time you play and support our caddies. ◆

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE As we begin a new fiscal year and golf season, the Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team is excited to share several projects that have been approved to improve the overall BCC golf experience. This includes work we will be doing on the East Course Long-Term Maintenance Plan, developed in 2018 with implementation starting in 2019. We have extended the fairway closer to #2 tee and will be transplanting additional trees this spring in the following areas: • • • • • •
Left rough of #7 Left rough around corner #6 (near the barn) Right #14 near the existing stand of trees Left of #1 fairway (near range tee) Left of orchard #3 East & #4 West (near Mays Chapel Rd) Additional plant material will be installed to the left of the range tee near the Golf House
Later this spring, additional cart path work will occur in the following areas on the West: • Behind #1 & #7 green • Left #6 green • Between #11 green & #12 fairway This summer, additional work will be completed on the back range mats. Then in mid-July, we will be regrassing tees on the West Course. The third and final phase will be completed in stages so that no holes will be closed during the work. 28 tees need to be regrassed which amounts to approximately 25,000 square feet. Finally, we are resuming drainage work this fall and will focus on the entire hole on #1 East and the lower portion of #2. You may recall, all East Course enhancements were put on hold last year, as the funds were reallocated to completing the work on the Driving Range. We continue to make progress and are confident we can maximize the collection and transportation of drainage water and provide a consistently well-drained soil profile to ensure healthy and firm playing surfaces.
Additional details and photos will follow as work on these projects begin to take shape. In last month’s Lifestyle, I wrote about green aeration and the dates that will be completed this spring. As a friendly reminder, aeration is necessary to relieve compaction, improve oxygen, stimulate new turf rooting in the soil, and improve water penetration and infiltration in the root zone. This year, our Team has begun preparing for the summer stress season by aerating the West greens in late March by removing soil with 3/8" coring tines followed by light amounts of sand to smooth the surface. East Course aeration is scheduled for May 3 through May 5. We will be pulling small 1/8" cores followed by a light application of sand topdressing on the greens. We will also be aerating fairways on both courses with solid tines while they are closed. As the season begins, each golfer can do their part to ensure the courses are at their very best. This includes repairing ball marks, replacing your divots, following cart suggestions, and smoothing the sand from the bunkers following play.
THE KEY TO BETTER GREENS The proper technique for repairing ball marks is quite simple and requires only a few seconds of effort: 1. Insert any pointed tool at a 45 degree angle behind the ball mark and gently push the top of the tool toward the center of the ball mark 2. Continue working around the ball mark, pushing the surrounding turf in toward the center 3. Afterward, tamp the area down with your putter GOLDEN RULE Please follow the Golden Rule for divot recovery to ensure our fairways remain in top condition throughout the season: 1. A divot that is large enough for the golfer to replace should be replaced 2. Every divot that is not replaced has no chance of survival. This is our best opportunity we have for recovery from divots
We look forward to seeing you this spring! ◆

RACQUETS
SIGN UP FOR SUMMER FUN! The Racquets Team is excited to bring a new look to our Junior Program this year! We are introducing our Junior Tennis & Pickleball AllStars program and BCC Junior Tennis Academy. Junior All-Stars is an introductory program for children 12 and under who are looking to explore racquet sports through tennis and pickleball. BCC Tennis Academy is a developmental program for juniors looking to improve their game through drills and match play scenarios. These programs tentatively begin the week of April 4 and conclude on June 5, leading directly into our Summer All-Stars and BCC Tennis Academy camps starting June 6. The new junior programs follow the USTA red, orange, green, and yellow progressive ball system. These balls bounce lower and move slower so players can experience success rallying at an early stage of development. Campers will be grouped by age and playing ability allowing for instruction that best suits the individual player. Half and full day options are available, with lunch provided. Your junior can look forward to games, themed activities, and more! We look forward to providing a new and invigorating Junior Racquets Program this year. ◆

JOIN THE COLOR WAR With great excitement, I would like to announce BCC’s inaugural Tennis & Pickleball Color War event on Saturday, June 18. This event will have four major color teams of tennis and pickleball players. Teams will be drafted by the Racquets Staff, who will serve as coaches for the respective teams. There will be three matches of either tennis or pickleball. Tennis will play first to eight games; pickleball will play to 15 points. Every game counts for tennis, and every point counts for pickleball for your team. At the end of the rounds, the team that has the most games/points from tennis and pickleball wins. Bonus points will be awarded to the most spiritedly dressed team. Please dress in your assigned team colors. Participants will be notified in advance of their team and color assignments. Captains and coaches will schedule a team training session before the event to strategize and build team camaraderie. We look forward to seeing you there! ◆
