Great People Make Favorite Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆
Staff Member of the Month NOVEMBER 2021
Giovanni Vargas, Bartender We congratulate Gio on being named November Staff Member of the Month! He comes to work every day with a great attitude and executes his duties efficiently. Gio stays busy on slow days by setting his teammates up for success by keeping a clean and well-stocked bar. He can also be found testing new cocktail recipes or sending surprise mocktails to guests. Gio stays calm and collected on busier, more stressful days and never lets the craziness get to him. He is professional yet manages always to keep things light-hearted. According to our Director of Food & Beverage Kate Reinhart, Gio is also a talented photographer and animal lover who can talk to anyone and make fellow staff and members feel welcome with his genuine approach to hospitality.
Exceptional Leadership Award Shaneeka Moonesar, Banquet Captain We congratulate our Banquet Captain Shaneeka for receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award! She returned to BCC in 2021 for her second summer to help run our Pool Café operation. Shaneeka has been incredibly reliable and was invaluable during our transitional period of closing down the Five Farms clubhouse and opening and operating the Petite Farms Bistro. She mastered those operations, and we are pleased to have her on permanently as a Banquet Captain and Manager in À la Carte. Shaneeka’s fellow staff members describe her as down to earth, hard-working, and always pulls her weight. She is wonderful at reading people and knows when to be a boss and when to be a friend. We look forward to her continued growth here at BCC!

As a staple of the Roland Park community for 124 years, it's interesting to look back at BCC's humble beginnings. An Excerpt from The Illustrated Sporting News (1898): The Picturesque Baltimore Country Club by Raphael S. Payne “An organization meeting was held January, 1898, at which the Provisional Committee reported the enrollment of 834 names, and offered for consideration a simple form of constitution. This embodied the name—“Baltimore Country Club of Baltimore City”—placed the entire government in the hands of a committee of twelve members; fixed the charges for membership and provided for appeals from decisions of the committee. The constitution was adopted, and the committee elected. Meantime the clubhouse was erected on June 4, 1898, turned over to the club and its members. More than one thousand persons had been secured by the provisional committee, as members, at that time, so that the success of the club was virtually assured from the start. There is perhaps no other similar club in the country whose constitution, by-laws and house rules have been framed with such nice discrimination or with a more intelligent view to future demands and conditions.”

PEACE, LOVE, & YOGA
By Rebecca Printen, Therapeutic Yoga Instructor Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love and friendship. This year, consider making it playful. Get on the mat with your kids, grandkids, nieces, or nephews. Remember, we can all remain playful, no matter how old we are! In yoga, we say love, kindness, and compassion lives in the heart. Doing heart opening poses keep that energy vibrant and alive, easier to share with others. ◆ Try these yoga poses and see how they make you feel:
DANCER POSE Standing tall, take hold of one leg using support if you need it. Lifting your other arm up to the sky, kick your back foot into your hand and tilt forwards. Remember to smile in this pose.
CAMEL POSE Kneeling on a soft blanket or mat, put your hands around to your low back, and press your bottom forward lifting your heart to the sky. Take a deep breath.
WHALE POSE Lie on your back and bend your knees so your feet are flat. Lay your arms down by your sides. Press into your feet, arms, and hands and lift your bottom up. Feel the expansion in the chest.
COUPLES THAI YOGA MASSAGE In this workshop, you and your partner will learn how to give and receive a Thai Yoga Massage. Thai Yoga Massage Practitioner Marissa will teach the proper alignment of each pose to ensure safety during each stretch. Each partner will receive practice time and feedback after each sequence demonstrated. The workshop will include deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness. Saturday, February 19 Roland Park Maryland Room | 1:00pm-2:30pm $55 per couple Includes one flute of champagne & chocolate covered strawberries No prior experience required. Please wear comfortable athletic attire, and bring a bottle of water. Mats and blankets are provided. 8 Couples Maximum | Pre-registration is required via the Fitness Calendar (BCC website) or the Calendar (BCC mobile app) | RSVP by February 15 Please email Marissa at mloforte@bcc1898.com with any questions 8

Your Success is Our Success The BCC Fitness & Wellness Team is loaded with talent. I did not join BCC for the Fitness Team as I have a home gym, several other gym memberships, and thought I was invincible at 65 years old. However, several years ago, I was feeling less athletic and started training with Director of Fitness & Wellness Janine Rich twice a week. Janine has been a tremendous coach. She has customized a program that works my weak left side and exercises to play my best golf. Janine offered Zoom training with me throughout the pandemic that was extremely helpful. To help with my goals, Janine suggested I give Thai Yoga Massage with Marissa a try. I did my first session with Marissa several months ago and have become a big fan. Thai Yoga Massage has improved all of my activities. It has helped with
better mobility and coordination. My workouts (yoga, weights, stretching, rowing, power walking, etc.) are better with Thai Yoga Massage. The Thai process involves yoga stretches combined with massage. Marissa can work on areas that need the most help and customize where appropriate. I am committed to daily workouts, and Thai Yoga Massage supports an active workout schedule. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to stay active and improve his or her health. Great people make BCC one of our favorite places. The Fitness & Wellness department is full of great people! They have become a major part of my fitness process. Patrick Tracy, BCC Member

GROUNDS
Greenkeeper's Update:
WINTER COURSE MAINTENANCE
To date, the weather has been ideal to complete numerous tasks on the Club’s courses as we only received 1.35" of rain in November and .63" in December. Ground conditions were dry and firm, which has been ideal to complete tree work throughout the property, focusing mainly on trees that are safety hazards. Dead and dying trees pose a threat to members, guests, and staff. Like last year, we will be replanting a new tree to the left of #7 East to replace the two dying trees depicted below.
Additional plantings will also take place on both sides of the driving range tees, adjacent to the fence along Mays Chapel and Jenifer Roads, near the barn hole on #6 (replace oak tree extensively damaged by cicadas), and to the right of #14 East green where a large oak had died. In December, conditions were ideal to complete fairway aeration on both 10
February 2022
courses, as well as core aeration and topdressing the East greens. In late December, our team installed turf covers on the bermudagrass playing areas established this past summer (with the exception of the Driving Range fairway). While there is no guaranteed way to prevent winter injury, covers provide the best level of protection for bermudagrass grown on a sand base during freezing temperatures. Extreme cold temperatures can be lethal to warm-season grass (below 20 degrees for an extended period). These special covers also allow air, water, and sunlight to penetrate, which act similar to a greenhouse effect by increasing the surface and soil temperatures. This will also benefit the perennial ryegrass which was overseeded into the IronCutter Bermuda turf.
Regarding cold temperatures on the bentgrass fairways and greens, the 007 creeping bentgrass is incredibly tolerant of freezing temperatures and unaffected by the cold temperatures. However, we will be installing covers on heavily divoted areas (collection areas at bottom of slopes) on #14 and #15 East to insure these areas have recovered and are ready for the coming golf season.

#15 turf cover
Finally, if you have driven by our Five Farms campus in December, you may have seen sprinklers running throughout the property. You may ask yourself if we really need water since growth has slowed and the grass has gone offcolor. The answer is yes, due to the low amounts of rain we received. While the grass has slowed and somewhat offcolor, it is still growing very slowly and the cold, dry, and windy weather can rapidly dry out the soil and plant tissue. This is especially true on all the surfaces which have been recently aerated. As a result of this drying or desiccation, damage can happen and it’s often not visible until spring. ◆

DUTCH ELM DISEASE In last month’s Lifestyle issue, Director of Horticulture Cathy Wagner wrote about the Club’s efforts to preserve the American elm trees at our Five Farms campus as Phase 1 of our Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan is underway. Part of preserving the elm trees involves evaluating the health of the remaining elms throughout the property. Last September, we noticed that one of the elms, mixed amongst the Osage Orange trees along Mays Chapel Road,
was declining. We consulted with our Licensed Maryland Tree Expert and ISA Certified Arborist who specializes in the maintenance and care of these trees, and he determined that this 40' American elm had a large dead leader in the center that accounts for roughly 20-25% of the canopy, and the remaining portions appear to be thinning and possibly dying back as well. While the cause is unclear, it could be related to excessive utility
pruning and/or phytotoxicity from past treatment for Dutch elm disease. While the tree did not appear to be symptomatic for Dutch elm disease at this time, it was recommended for removal since the decline process will likely continue, which would attract elm bark beetle (vector for Dutch elm disease) and put other, more valued elms at Five Farms at risk for infection, particularly the trees located at the clubhouse location. ◆
WHAT IS DUTCH ELM DISEASE? Dutch elm disease is a serious, lethal disease that infects many elm species including American, Winged, Slippery, Rock, and September elms. Symptoms typically appear in May as wilted branches that show yellow, then brown leaves. Dried leaves may remain attached to the branches or fall, leaving bare twigs. As symptoms progress, entire limbs may show wilt symptoms and once the infection reaches the trunk, the entire tree may wilt. In older trees, wilt symptoms may progress throughout the canopy for several years before death occurs. This fungal disease enters through feeding wounds made by the native elm bark beetle and the more prevalent, smaller, European elm bark beetle. Beetles breed beneath the bark of dying or recently dead elms. Infected or stressed trees emit an odor that attracts beetles to them for breeding and egglaying. In addition, female beetles also emit attractants that lure additional beetles to declining trees. Beetles that emerge from infected trees typically are covered with fungal spores growing in the pupal chambers. Beetles flying to other trees spread the spores to other trees.
In the course of feeding, the beetles infect the tree with the fungus
Infected beetles emerge and fly to healthy trees
THE CYCLE
Fungus produces fruiting bodies
The larvae develop under the bark
Disease develops in the tree
Tree is weakened to where beetles bore through the bark and lay eggs under it
DISEASE MANAGEMENT The chief strategy for control of Dutch elm disease is through early removal of newly infected branches to interrupt the spread by elm bark beetles. Ideally, removal should occur within two to three weeks after symptoms appear during the growing season. Diseased wood should be chipped and removed. Pruning cuts should be made at a branch fork at least 10' below visible streaking in the sapwood. Pruning is most effective if less than five percent of the crown is affected. High-value trees may be appropriately injected with systemic fungicides, administered by a licensed arborist.
