John and Lynette McFadden are well known Christchurch real estate professionals, with more than 26 years in the industry. They own New Zealand’s No 1 residential office and francise for Harcourts. They talk to Metropol about working together and philanthropy.

Not everyone would find it easy, or preferable, to work so closely with their partner, so it’s interesting to discover some of the lessons John and Lynette McFadden have learnt over the years while excelling in a highly driven and competitive industry.

Lynette says she has always considered herself lucky to work with John.

“We have entirely di erent skill sets and have learnt over the years to let those speak for themselves. The acumen John brings to the business, his comprehensive contractual knowledge and ability to problem solve di cult matters in a calm way leaves me in the dust,” she explains.

“I’d end up with palpitations and go o on some tangent. I’m not a particularly practical person.

“Equally I have a lot of influence over the tone of our business, what our marketing looks like, how we can enhance the experience for the team we work with and the people we work for. I’m the creative force and John encourages and trusts that to me so we are not second guessing and questioning each other.

“I guess you’d say we stick in our own lanes, and we are also big goal setters.

“We have done this for our entire lives together,” she adds.

John is also full of praise. “I’ve always thought working together had some real

advantages. You can work on the business beyond the usual working hours, reducing the chance of opportunities being lost because you can’t deal with them till the following week when you get back to the o ce,” he says.

“I guess you’d say we stick in our own lanes, and we are also big goal setters. We have done this for our entire lives together.”

“It’s also very satisfying achieving shared goals and dreams, and knowing that working together you’ve made a real

di erence for your family.

“I love working with Polly (which is the name I have for Lynette) and I make sure that we still make time to remember there’s more to life than work.

“We travel a lot. Due to my long time interest in cycling, we’ve been to France and other parts of Europe many times where I’ve enjoyed some fabulous cycling.

“Despite my encouragement Polly has passed on the cycling, preferring to check out the local villages and galleries instead. We also have our eldest son Harry living in the Northern Hemisphere for six months a year, so we’ve travelled extensively to visit him, often with our younger son Louis.”

Both agree that real estate has been

kind to them, and that giving back is extremely important. “For us that involves families in need, and children.

“We have a significant involvement, personally and as a business, with KidsCan, and have taken on helping a local cause called Full Bellies, which provides hundreds of lunches weekly to local schools,” they say.

John is also involved in helping young sports people trying to break into their chosen field, and collectively the McFaddens are committed to assisting Scape in its quest to secure incredible art for the city.

“Giving is one of our values as is family and friendship. It’s that simple really.”

The McFaddens have five Harcourts o ces throughout the Christchurch region, and previously included o ces on the West Coast and in Wanaka for a time.

With large teams of consultants, administrators, an inhouse financial team, marketing and design department, a property management o ce, an international division, and a staging company, they have more than 140 people to consider and look after.

Her inspiration comes from anything “that gives me ideas, energy and positive emotion”.

“People inspire me, particularly those who achieve something against all odds, or have the courage to step out of their comfort zone. I have just read The Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates about the women who have inspired heryes, I was very inspired after that read,” she says.

The quote Chris was drawn to led to her and Margie Foster starting the Inspired Events organisation in Christchurch.

“I had been thinking for some time of creating a space and opportunity for women to network socialise and share information, a trusted community of women,” she explains.

“The stars aligned when Margie and I caught up, and shared our vision for what

became Inspired Events - Inspiring Me Now.

“We started it as a welcoming space for women to grow their network, share personal stories and expertise, as well as hear from amazing local speakers within the walls of a gorgeous private club or larger event space.

“To this day we still work to that model. For us, it’s like inviting someone into our own homes – manaakitanga.”

The mother of four grown sons, and wife of retired National MP Nuk Korako, Chris has a long and strong business career, and directorships, including Chair of a $600m+ Foundation. She has always been positive.

“I think I was born with the positive gene, it has been my guiding light throughout my life. For me, positivity is all about mind-set, surrounding myself with good people, and of course my whanau and friends. I see the absolute best in everyone and everything, until proven otherwise.”

One of Chris’ role models is her late mother Lily, who she lost to cancer while in her early 30s.

“She was highly intelligent and artistic, with the ability to see the best and beauty in everything. Mum had enormous inner strength and a can-do attitude that radiated an outward love for life and adventure.

“She was my positive gene.”

Chris’ advice to other women is to value their uniqueness. “Set your goals early in the year, not a shopping list, but a clear set of goals.

Christchurch has a rich Scottish heritage, evident in its people, buildings, and also its pipe bands. Metropol deputy editor Daniella Judge discovers the latter are gaining traction with young and old.

The Scottish heritage in Christchurch is deep-rooted, with many of the city’s early settlers being of Scottish descent. This has resulted in the preservation and celebration of Scottish culture throughout the city, as demonstrated through events such as the annual Scottish Festival.

Christchurch boasts several landmarks that pay tribute to its Scottish roots, although some were lost to time and nature. One was the iconic Caledonian Hall on Kilmore Street, destroyed in the 2011 Canterbury earthquake.

Various Christchurch groups continue to promote and preserve Scottish heritage through activities such as highland dancing, pipe bands, and bagpiping.

With such a rich Scottish heritage, it’s no surprise that pipe bands have gained popularity in Christchurch, and elsewhere in New Zealand. Next month Cantabrians will have a chance to hear and see its local pipe bands, and others, in action in the 2023 New Zealand and South Pacific Pipe Band Championships.

Pipe band involvement has become increasingly popular among younger generations in Christchurch.

In an era where technology has created a sense of loneliness, more and more people are seeking new ways to spend their time and connect with their community.

The Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Association (RNZPBA) runs many of the pipe band events in Christchurch, o ers summer school programmes for aspiring musicians, as also runs mentorship programmes.

Anyone of any age or skill can get involved and local bands are listed on the RNZPBA website (opposite).

Embark on a stunning coastal trail at Andersons Lagoon

If you are looking for a scenic day walk that won’t take longer than three hours, then this is the destination for you.

Only a 48 minute drive out of Ōamaru, getting there is simple. Start by driving from SH1 in Palmerston and turning onto Tiverton St. From there, carry on down Goodwood Rd until you reach Bushy Hill Rd. Turn left and almost immediately turn right onto Anderson Rd. Park your car and cross the stile to reach the beach.

SAM BUTCHER is a Business Analysis

The Ben Gough Family Foundation Leaders Scholarship programme was launched in 2021 in partnership with the University of Canterbury Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. The annual scholarships have this year been awarded to Sam Butcher, Gareth Bruce and Julie Hands, all high achievers in their fields.

They will receive a programme of learning and support, including a substantial contribution towards their University of Canterbury MBA course fees, bespoke leadership coaching from Leadership Lab, an Outward Bound leadership experience, and mentoring with a highlyexperienced business and community leader.

Ben Gough Family Foundation trustees and local business leaders Ben and Penny Gough have curated the scholarship programme, alongside the University, to accelerate the scholars’ professional and personal development

Through their relationships and networks, they connect the scholars to a mentor who can provide exclusive insights and guidance during their MBA studies.

Ben Gough says the pandemic-related upheaval of the last few years has demonstrated the need to be responsive, agile and dynamic in business.

“We are excited to be a part of the scholars’ journey and to see them develop these capabilities as they rise through the scholarship programme and the academic challenges of their MBA studies at the University of Canterbury,” he says.

Sam, who was Head Boy at Middleton Grange School in 2012, received an Emerging Leaders Scholarship and completed a degree in Business Economics and Information Systems at the University of Canterbury. His mentor for the scholarship will be Guy Horrocks.

GARETH BRUCE is a University of Canterbury Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) graduate who is now General Manager of Utilities Infrastructure NZ, a civil construction business specialising in trenchless technology. Work harassment

A recent news article caught my eye, saying “Christchurch business owner jailed for attempted rape and indecent assault of employee”.

In summary Gerald Diver, the owner of a local painting business, had been sexually harassing and assaulting female sta members. While he was not convicted of rape, the judge “found it likely” that Diver had raped a young female employee, that he had plied with alcohol.

One young lady resigned, and another confronted Diver about attempting to rape her, and then he sacked her!

The issue for anyone dealing with o ensive behaviour of any type, particularly sexually o ensive behaviour, is what to do about it? A good first step is to get advice. Larger companies will say that they have HR to deal with such issues, but in my experience there are times when HR will support and protect the reputation of the individuals, and the company, over the employees.

Any employer should have simple and easy solutions about where somebody can go for further advice. It is as simple as reformatting this article as a poster, and putting it somewhere visible in the workplace. In cases of serious assaults or rape - start with the police.

Lingerie specialists say there are three key steps you can follow to ensure a correct read every time when measuring your bust.

Bra sizes are based on your band size, which is the number, and your cup size, which is the letter, usually determined by using a soft, fabric tape measure around your bust, and also just beneath.

Step one: Measure underneath your bust. Wrap a soft fabric tape measure around your ribcage directly beneath your bust. Make sure the tape is in a straight line and

is snug but not too tight. Round up to the nearest even number and this is your band size.

Step two: Measure directly across the centre of your bust, once again making sure that the tape is snug, and in a straight band all the way around. It may help to take a deep breath in and out to ensure the tape isn’t too tight.

Step three: Round the number to the nearest whole number. To determine your cup size, first, subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement and refer to the adjacent cup size chart.

• Stand tall with your left arm at your side.

• Hold for 20 to 30 seconds and return to centre.

Child’s Pose

Child’s Pose or Balasana is a well-known yoga pose that can help relieve neck and back pain. It’s also a gentle stretch that helps you relax.

• Get on your hands and knees with your palms flat on the floor, wrists under your shoulders, and knees under your hips.

• Sit back on your heels, lengthen your spine, and walk your hands in front of you. Make sure to hinge at your hips.

• Fold forward and keep your arms extended in front of you.

• Hold this position for 60 to 90 seconds. Focus on breathing while you release tension in your neck and shoulders.

• Repeat 10 to 12 times.

Thread the needle

Thread the needle is a stretch that helps release tension in your back, neck, and shoulders.

• Get on your hands and knees with your palms flat on the floor, wrists under your shoulders, knees under your hips.

• Slide your right hand (palm up) on the floor to the left side of your body. Your body will rotate with the movement, and your right shoulder will touch the floor as you look to the left side. Use left hand to support weight.

• Hold position for 20 to 30 seconds and return to the starting position.

• Repeat on the left side, and do 2 to 3 times on each side.

Neck release

The neck release is a gentle way to loosen tension in your shoulders and neck.

• Stand tall with both arms at your sides.

• Lower your head and bring your chin toward your chest.

• Gently tilt your head towards the right side and pause for 30 seconds. You should feel a stretch in the left side of your neck.

• Bring your head back to the centre and lift to the starting position.

• Repeat before changing sides.

• Do 3 to 5 times on each side.

Buzzing over mead

Mead is an alcoholic honey drink that’s recently gained huge popularity – understandably so, it’s delicious.

While it’s come a long way over the years, the ethos of mead production has remained relatively unchanged since medieval times; that is, using fermented honey as the base.

One classic game that can be incorporated into home decor is chess.

Chess is well suited for incorporating into home decor due to its simple and graphic gameboard and pieces. Chequered patterns have also been a sharply rising trend.

To create a chessboard table, first, prepare and prime the surface with Resene Waterborne Smooth Sealer Surface, then paint it with two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Seashell. Use masking tape to draw the squares and mask o the ones you want to keep white and paint two coats of Resene Double Cod Grey on the unmasked areas.

Once the second coat is dry, remove the masking tape to reveal the chessboard. To make the chessboard part of the overall decor, use both colours in other places in the room, such as through accessories or accents. You can keep the scheme monochromatic or add contrasting accent hues like forest green, lilac, and creamy white to make it more interesting. Make sure to use each accent hue in three places in the room to create a cohesive scheme.

MULCH

• Helps to keep moisture in the soil, and slows evaporation. It helps to reduce weeds, and keeps the soil temperature cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

• Adds nutrients to the soil, helps retain water in sandy soils, and improve drainage in clay soils.

• Provides cover and protection while nutrients break down.

PLANT CHOICE

• Choose drought tolerant trees, or those that have low watering requirements such as natives as they have adapted to survive using natural rainfall amounts.

• Choose plants based on soil type and indigenous vegetation to the area. This website may be a useful resource – ccc.govt.nz/ environment/land/ecosystem-map

• Utilise taller trees and plants to provide shade and shelter to smaller or new plants until they get established.

• Container plants usually dry out faster and will need more frequent water. Choose pots that are glazed so moisture isn’t lost through the sides of the pot. Alternatively use a liner

to provide a barrier that reduces the amount of water lost.

NEW PLANTS

• When planting consider using water storage crystals or gels mixed into the soil as these help to retain moisture and distribute water more evenly.

• New plants (less than 1 year old) will require more frequent watering whilst their root system becomes established. Where possible help them to grow by placing them in areas where other plants will provide some shelter.

• When planting, consider grouping water thirsty plants together to avoid overwatering those that don’t need quite so much water. Planting in groups rather than rows is a more e cient way to water than watering over a long row.

• Add a flat mulch ring around the tree (like a donut). To keep the tree healthy avoid mulching in a mound. Mulch that touches or covers the trunk or stem of the tree may cause decay in the living bark.

WATERING

• Use irrigation lines or soaker hoses with automated tap timers that aim directly into the soil. Water is quickly evaporated o the leaves meaning very little water reaches the soil and into the roots where it’s needed.

• The best time of day to water is the morning when temperatures are usually cooler. Watering in the morning allows excess water time to dry out and minimises the amount of water sitting in the soil or around the roots. Wet leaves or water-logged roots are more susceptible to a range of diseases.

• Aim for slow watering to encourage roots to grow deep into the soil where the ground is cooler.

• If watering on a slope do so in slower, shorter bursts to allow time for the water to soak in rather than run o .

• To test if your soil needs watering, simply stick a finger into the soil. If the soil is dry two inches below the surface, you need to water, or if you see wilting leaves.

• Now is an ideal time to seek advice from a trusted tree professional.

A new British Auto Trader study rates the Porsche 911 top overall eye-catching design, with the BMW 3 Series the best everyday car, and Porsche’s Taycan model coming out as the most ‘eye-catching’ EV.

The Porsche 911 captured the most attention, with an ‘eyecatching score’ of 91 percent, followed by the Lexus LC500 and Ferrari F40.

The study from the UK’s largest automotive marketplace Auto Trader used unique eye-tracking technology to discover which cars are the most attractive to the human eye.

Research participants were asked to look at a series of 40 images of the world’s best-selling car models while their eye movements were tracked, in order to discover which motors captured their attention the quickest, and which held the gaze longest. The two tracking metrics were combined to give each car model its own unique ‘eye-catching’ score.

Luxury cars dominate the top rankings, with 60 percent of the top 10 vehicles being supercars, while electric cars featured just three times in the top 20 most eye-catching car rankings.

In the EV category, the Porsche Taycan was deemed most eye-catching design. Other top 10 EV designs included the Tesla Model 3, MG4 EV, Kia EV6, the MINI Electric and the Audi e-tron.

When it came to which auto captured attention the quickest, the everyday bestseller Toyota Yaris topped the study, showing it took just 1.89 seconds for participants to fixate on the Yaris image on the screen.

COMFORT

Despite its SUV range being its biggest cash cow, and a surge in its all-electric 208e supermini, Peugeot has still decided to give its 308 mid-sized hatch a make-over. Ben Selby reports.

Its new lease on life includes new looks, new tech and new power units.

The range consists of two petrol variants, a plug-in hybrid and from next year, a BEV version.

My test car was the petrol powered 308 GT, which qualifies for a government clean car rebate. The fresh modern design makes for one handsome hatchback.

Its Full Matrix LED headlights, and revised grill sporting a new Peugeot Lion embossed logo, give it a clean cut face, while its 18-inch alloys look great. Plus, that Olivine Green paint scheme is stunning.

Inside you feel cocooned by funky touch buttons and other quality materials. The small heated leather wrapped steering wheel, unique to Peugeot, still has to be moved down to prevent the rim from blocking the instrument cluster, but after a while you get used to this.

Centre stage is a new 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Here you can operate many of the on-board gizmos, and can even add shortcut icons for regularly used features on the centre console, much like a smartphone.

The 308 GT gets ambient lighting, parking sensors fore and aft, USB-C ports,

tinted glass, autonomous engine braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise and lane departure warning. Also featured is an optional Premium Pack, with niceties such as a 10-speaker FOCAL premium sound system, and heated nappa leather front seats with built-in massage function.

The driver’s seat is electric with twoposition memory function. Practicality is also half decent. The 308 GT has a deep boot floor and can hold 417L to 1323L if you drop the second row of seats.

The Pug’s turbo three pot emits a lovely mechanical burble, however, it is not what you would call quick. You won’t be setting any records when getting up to speed.

Regardless, while the 308 GT is no performance machine and on some less smooth tarmac roads there is a smidgen of tyre roar, it is sublime as a comfortable and quiet long-distance cruiser.

Thanks to a supple, comfortable ride, and a good dose of low-end torque, the motorway miles are easily dealt with. In sport mode, you can also have a relatively entertaining jaunt around back roads, thanks to a well sorted chassis and underpinnings.

It’s a bit pricey, but the funky petrol 308 GT still has plenty going for it.
