Santa, Snow and Sundaes Holiday Happenings in Pembroke Pines BY NICOL JENKINS
T
he City of Pembroke Pines is decked with holiday cheer this season.
From a night of snow and firefighters delivering toys to enjoying sundaes with Santa Claus, there will be plenty of holiday events for the community to enjoy with family and friends. For the 19th year, the City of Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department is hosting their annual Santa’s Express Children’s Holiday Toy Delivery Program. If you are a resident of Pembroke Pines and have children, ages ten and under, you may register to have Santa arrive aboard a fire truck and deliver a gift to your children at your home. As part of registration for this program, Pembroke Pines residents must donate a new, unwrapped toy with a $10 value or $10 cash or check donation per child on registration day. No stuffed animals will be accepted. Donations are used to help children in need who live in the local community and to various area community organizations including: Legal Aid, Children’s Harbor, St. Maximilian Church and Pines Baptist Church. If you want the fire department to deliver holiday cheer to your home, you must provide a wrapped toy for your child when Santa arrives to your home on the night of the scheduled delivery to your area. Don’t miss this year’s 2015 registration date! Registration will only be held on Saturday, December 5th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Fire Station #69 located at 9500 Pines Boulevard. This program is on a first-come first-served basis and limited to a maximum of 250 households. For more information, contact 954-436-3006.

“This year is our 19th year. We start off by giving toys to our resident children through a screening process from our Parks and Recreation Department. We also assist Legal Aid, Children’s Harbor, St Maximilian Church and Pines Baptist Church. They bring their donated toys to us on the day of registration where they sign up for our program,” said Richard Scopa, Public Relations Officer for City of Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue. Each year, the event continues to warm the hearts of everyone in the community, from the children receiving the toys and the residents donating the gifts to the firefighters delivering the holiday cheer. “It’s a great event because we are able to give toys to children that may not get any during the holiday season. It brings smiles to our residents’ children’s faces that sign up for our program when Santa arrives at their home aboard a fire truck. The trucks are out for three nights and many of our residents see our Fire Department personnel volunteering to help out in order to make this program successful,” added Scopa.

Student Art Exhibited at ‘Children’s Holiday in the Pines’ A BY NICOL JENKINS
group of talented Pembroke Pines students will soon display their masterpieces in their local community.
The community is invited to view the local students’ artwork at the Annual Children’s Holiday in the Pines event. The cultural arts event will showcase the students’ art through January 11th with the Opening Reception on December 1st from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the City of Pembroke Pines Glass Gallery located at 10100 Pines Boulevard. With this year’s theme of “How do you celebrate the Holidays?”, the art exhibit will feature approximately 200 art works by children residing in Pembroke Pines. The Opening Reception will offer light refreshments and entertainment by Superstar Productions. Children will also enjoy snacks, interactive games and receive a gift from Santa. “We look forward to ringing in the holiday season celebrating our city’s talented children during this family friendly evening,” said Holly Bonkowski, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. The art inspired event is open to all local Pembroke Pines elementary and middle school students, along with youth in the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Art Classes, according to Bonkowski. Students participating in this year’s exhibit will create art work in keeping with the theme of “How Do You Celebrate the Holidays?” by using mediums which inspire their creativity including paint, crayons, feathers, macaroni, chalk and more.
The Glass Gallery will once again showcase student art with the “Children’s Holiday in the Pines” exhibit from December 1 to January 11. The artwork pictured here is from last year’s event. Photos submitted.
“The Children’s Holiday in the Pines event was started to foster the creative spirit of students and promote art and culture in the community,” said Bonkowski. Bonkowski believes the art themed event provides a tremendous benefit to the local community.

November 2015
“The event benefits our community of Pembroke Pines because it allows our local students to exhibit their artistic talents,” said Bonkowski, adding. “It’s vital to incorporate art into our children’s education because sometimes the schools with limited budgets are unable to reach all the children’s artistic abilities.” The City of Pembroke Pines Art Exhibit offers other cultural arts themed events for the entire community to enjoy. It is a great way to meet new people and enjoy art exhibits at the following locations and exhibits: Studio

You’re Part of the Family at Senior Medical Associates T
he mission of the Senior Medical Associates team of physicians, medical assistants, nurse practitioners and staff is to provide compassionate medical care to seniors over 65. Each of their full service medical centers offer spacious exam rooms with enough room for caregivers, on-site X-Ray facilities, blood draw and specimen collection centers, and many other services such as Pulmonary Function Tests and Ear Lavage all under one roof. Patients are treated like family, the team believes in Personalized Primary Care What does Personalized Primary Care mean? Each patient is treated as an individual. A friendly staff member answers your calls, never a machine. You are welcomed with a smile, offered a seat, refreshment and healthy snack in a cozy waiting area. You are walked to an on site lab or exam room by a skilled medical assistant. A provider sits with you, learns about you, your family and your way of life, and together you develop a wellness plan. “We are partners in achieving optimal health and believe that most people have the capacity to live long and healthy lives with vigor and vitality,” says Dr. Mohsin Jaffer, lead physician at Senior Medical Associates.
with patients and community members. At each of these events we communicate the importance of wellness and preventative care, education and socialization.” said Patricia Izquierdo.
“We want our patients to be comfortable. We treat them like family,” says Dr. Noemi Margaryan.
The group is also very involved in giving back to the senior population and charities in the community. They work closely with the YMCA of South Florida to support their Active Older Adult (AOA) initiative, the Pantry of Broward, Inc., supporting seniors raising their grandchildren and the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward (AADRC) supporting various initiatives across the county.
Patients rave about the opportunity they had to meet with a doctor prior to becoming a patient. “We even encourage seniors to schedule a complimentary ‘Meet and Greet’ visit with a provider of their choice at a center near them. ‘Meet and Greet’ visits are a great opportunity for the patient to feel welcome, get to know the provider, our staff, and the medical center,” says Dr. Sondra Aiken. “Patients really appreciate the time we dedicate to them, we wouldn’t have it any other way” says Dr. Noel Mora. “We often host events on site and in the senior community.” “I’ve enjoyed painting with patients, participating in yoga classes and offering medical insights through lunch and learns. Events are a great way to interact with seniors, get to know them and encourage them to be the captain of their ship,” says Dr. Olga Maric. Patients of Senior Medical Associates agree! One patient testimonial from the Senior Medical Associates website says the following: “The team at Senior Medical Associates goes above and beyond to provide high quality care to area seniors and they’re out in the community regularly promoting health and wellness for seniors. What a great group!” - T.H.R. Each of the 12 Medical Centers across Broward County are conveniently located near senior communities. This provides patients with a sense of ease knowing their dedicated staff are nearby. Most locations offer courtesy transportation to patients in need. “We launched an

Sallarulo’s Race for Champions T he City of Pembroke Pines had a strong showing of 45 participants, including athletes, friends and family at the Sallarulo’s Race for Champions 5K Run/Walk benefiting Special Olympics Broward County. The team raised $711 for the cause. This year’s race was held on November 7, 2015 at Nova Southeastern University. Bob Aguirra, Systems Supervisor, Finance Department came in first for age group 50-59 and Mary Palacios, CTRS, CPRP Special Population Coordinator, came in 3rd for age group 50-59. “This is our fourth year participating and our team grows every year,” stated Mary Wilson Palacios. ““Broward County Special Olympics provides many sports training programs for athletes in our community. The 5K Run/Walk of Champions – 2015 is a great way to support an organization which does so much for Special Populations.” Sallarulo’s Race for Champions was created by Paul, Patrick and Samantha Sallarulo to raise money for Special Olympics Broward County. Paul is a member of the NSU Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Wayne H. Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, Dental School – Advisory Board, and President of the International NSU Alumni Association.

Paul has been a strong supporter of Special Olympics and has been working with people with special needs since he was 16 years old. In 2006, Paul raised money for Special Olympics by collecting donations that spurred on his personal goal of completing a half marathon in Orlando to mark his 50th birthday. He finished the race and surpassed his fundraising goal, generating $130,000 in donations. He then wanted to create an event where the community could join him in his support of Special Olympics, so the 5K run/walk was born.

Recovery: Exploring Your Choices
F
inding addiction treatment services can be an over whelming process, especially when you or your loved one is in crisis. Addiction treatment has come a long way. It is no longer a one size fits all model and it is important to know that you do have choices beyond the traditional 12-step Alcoholics Anonymous (A A) models. Many people in recovery have core issues that go well beyond alcoholism or drug addiction that the traditional 12-step A A models do not address. The lifestyle of addiction itself often puts many people in situations that leave them feeling guilty and full of shame. Still others may have experienced traumatic events that leave lasting psychological scars. Furthermore, the sad truth is that many people who abuse drugs and alcohol experience situations that have created scars long before they discovered alcohol and drugs. In fact, many have started to abuse substances as a way to cope with the pain of their past traumas. Furthermore, the discovery of a pre-existing or undiagnosed mental illness can be a vital component to maintaining sobriety. Just as honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness are the keys to recovery from alcoholism and drug addictions, so too are they the keys for overcoming core issues. Honestly taking stock of what the core issues are is required if someone is to learn new ways of coping with the emotions thoughts and behaviors that have resulted from those issues. In order to find freedom from core issues and misguided beliefs, people in recovery need to relearn how to look at themselves and others, as well as how to examine what they tell themselves, how they see the world, and how they interact with those around them. It is often hard work. The outcome of examining your core issues is a life with more joy, desire and interest. Having the courage and the willingness

to take an honest look at your issues and to ask for help in working through them is the first step. Some non-traditional treatment centers offer Case Management as part of their approach. Case management provides care that, in conjunction with therapy, supports the client beyond face-to-face meetings. These services are unique in that they bring cohesion to an individual’s treatment plan and are the bridge that connects the individual, family and care providers. It includes a variety of services and support for the client while engaging in other activities such as athletics and recreation (i.e. hiking, walking, indoor/ outdoor rock climbing, etc.). It monitors an individual’s treatment progress from the initial point of assessment to the intake at the treatment center and all the way through treatment. There is an emphasis on communication between the client’s clinical team as they create a treatment program as well as the follow-through of aftercare recommendations. Legally Speaking BY PAUL SILVERBERG
How Limited Is My Personal Liability For Business Debts And Liabilities?
A
s a business law attorney, when a person seeks advice about a new business or an on-going business, we initially discuss their current legal entity status. As most people are aware, a business with a legal entity has distinct advantages over partnerships or a sole proprietor status. Most notably, Florida law generally protects the owners and officers from liability and company debts should the business be sued as it has a “corporate veil”.
Typically, honest business owners unknowingly abuse the independent existence of the business entity and create the “alter ego” status. This is most commonly abused by paying personal debts through the business. It starts as simple as paying the landscaper or utilities bills for the house from the business bank accounts or using corporate credit card for personal expenditures.
If a creditor of the business is unable (or believes it will be unable) to collect its claims against the business, it may attempt to pierce the corporate veil. The piercing the corporate veil will eliminate the liability protection given to the business owners and officers and expose them personally. The law generally states that the corporate veil will not be pierced absent a showing of improper conduct.
20
November 2015
To protect your personal assets from your business, you should only form a business entity to start or continue a true business entity, and second an owner/officer should never mix their personal assets and liabilities with the business unless they are following legal or tax advise or other legitimate basis under Florida law. Silverberg is the Managing Partner at Silverberg & Weiss, P.A. as the firm practices both Business Law (transactional) and Commercial Litigation, including the formation and representation of corporations and LLCs. assia Cardoso is passionate about making people feel beautiful. As a little girl, Cassia was inspired by her grandmother, a hardworking midwife that went on to create her own line of natural beauty products and her grandfather, a barber and beautician in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Cassia’s mother also encouraged her to make homemade products and natural tonics and her friends and family would seek her out whenever they needed beauty advice and solutions. For that reason, Cassia had no doubt that she had found her true calling in life and she proceeded to study at an Aesthetics University in her native town in Brazil.
literally rejuvenating new and younger tissue! Another popular treatment at the med spa is the Herbal Peel.
While studying, she worked in a medical clinic that specialized in beauty and rejuvenation and continued to work there for six years after her graduation. Cassia has training in advanced facial, body, pre and post-operatory aesthetics. She is an orthomolecular therapist and specialist in lymphatic drainage, chemical peeling and herbal and organic hair removal wax. She decided to open her own medical clinic where she practiced under the supervision of specialized doctors until 2009. Cassia reinvented herself by getting the necessary degrees and licenses in order to start working in the United States.
When it comes to body treatments, you can expect to lose inches and improve tone and texture and eliminate cellulite with options such as:
•
Mesotherapy – promotes fat and cellulite loss by injectioning pharmaceuticals into the mesodermal layer of tissue under the skin.
With over thirty years of beauty expertise, Cassia has been sharing her talents with clients in South Florida for the past six years. “I have learned from many people and I have had the great privilege of teaching many others,” she says. Her staff is well trained and performs medical and aesthetic treatments using state-of-the-art technology, under the guidance of Dr. Alex Lugo.
•
Cryolipolysis – a non-invasive cooling of body fat to break down fat cells, resulting in a reduction of body fat without damage to other tissues.
“Every employee we have, from the doctor to the massage therapist, is licensed and qualified to perform all the procedures and techniques available,” says Cassia.
•
Carboxytherapy - a non-surgical procedure used to infuse CO2 gas below the skin.
•
Lipolaser - low level cold laser technology for spot fat reduction, inch loss and body contouring.
•
Presotherapy - a lymphatic drainage treatment that helps to promote the body’s natural toxin clearing functions.
Clients looking to rejuvenate their appearance and take years off of their face can choose from a variety of treatments, including Plasma Rich Platelets, derma fillers, Botox, Liquid Face Lift, as well as organic and chemical peels, and Laser/IPL/Radio Frequency Treatment. They also specialize in adult and teen acne and offer Hydrafacials. Cassia says that their most popular treatment, the Platelet Rich Plasma, restores shape, and improves tone and texture, as well as

Lymphatic Drainage - gentle massage technique that encourages the natural drainage of the lymph nodes.
Cavitation – uses radio frequency technology to convert fat cells into liquid which can then be naturally drained by the body’s filtration system.

Her slogan: “Every woman deserves a treatment that will provide results.” Cassia is so confidant about her work that she says, “Every client I treat like I treat myself; I would never do anything to my client that I would not do on me.” Even after thirty years working in the beauty industry, Cassia still loves what she does. It is very rewarding for her to be in a position where she can, as she puts it, “make a woman feel beautiful again and maintain her beauty.” After all, “we all have the right to be beautiful,” she says. Lola
L
ola is an eight-month-old female Cavachon (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Bichon Frise). Her favorite people are mommy and daddy! When she wants to cuddle and nap, mommy is top of her list. When she wants playtime, daddy is her # 1. Lola’s favorite toy is a red and white stuffed beagle with floppy ears just like her! She loves peanut butter, chewing on Coca cola bottles and hopping around on mommy and daddy’s bed. She is not a fan of doorbells, even when she hears them on the television. Lola’s favorite thing to do is go on car rides. She was last seen taking in the beautiful sunshine and chasing the butterflies.

Happy Holidays and Healthy Pets
How To Avoid Holiday Hazards
I
t’s that time of the year again! The holidays are upon us which means food, family and festivities for the next couple of months. Sometimes we give Fluffy and Fido food, or they find it for themselves in our holiday stashes, and sometimes they decide to eat our holiday decorations! By knowing what to watch out for, and what to avoid giving to your furry family member, you can have a safer and less stressful holiday this season.
NEW LOCATION

Lastly, holiday plants like poinsettia, holly, lilies and mistletoe are dangerous to nibbling pets. Holly and poinsettias cause irritation to the mouth and intestines, which can lead to vomiting and diarrhea, and in the case of holly, also physical damage to the intestines, or obstruction (intestinal blockage) due to sharp and indigestible leaves. All the flowers of the lily family are extremely poisonous to cats. One to two leaves, if ingested, is enough to cause fatal kidney failure in cats, but dogs, on the other hand, often will experience only mild vomiting. American mistletoe most commonly causes self-limiting vomiting and mild neurological depression. Rarely, diarrhea and low blood pressure may also occur. If any of these plants are ingested and it is noticed, call a veterinarian or emergency center right away because we may be able to induce vomiting to remove the plants from the stomach, if it is within a certain time period. Otherwise hospitalization, supportive care and poison control consultation may be indicated. Again, as with any of these holiday hazards, it’s best to just not have these things around. This holiday season, to avoid spending time and money at the vet office, pay attention to potential holiday hazards such as table scraps, candies and decorations! For more information on potentially toxic substances including details regarding toxic plants, please see the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center website at http:// www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/. The ASPCA Poison Control Center phone number is 888-426-4435.

Probably the hardest thing to avoid for most people, is sharing the holiday meal with the dog or cat. As difficult as this is going to be, please do not give table scraps, especially ham, gravy, and other seasoned foods. We all have a friend, neighbor, family member, who says, “that’s not true, my dog eats everything I eat and she’s fine!” These people are actually either very lucky, or not aware of the harm they can potentially cause. The truth is, fatty foods, salty foods and other spices can very easily upset a dog or cat’s stomach leading to decreased appetite, dehydration, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Certain breeds such as Yorkies, Schnauzers and others are prone to a potentially very painful and severe disease called pancreatitis that can be caused by eating such foods. The same can occur if they get into chocolate, tea, coffee, and alcohol. Please try to keep all of these things out of reach from your pets. Unfortunately, scented candles and potpourri can pose perils for our furry friends as well. In order to avoid potentially serious burns it is important to place candles up and out of the reach of cats and dogs. Liquid potpourri can also cause severe burns of the mouth, throat and stomach - this can obviously occur if the pet laps up the scented liquid, but can also occur if spilled on the hair and coat since cats and dogs often lick themselves to clean the offending material off. This can be fatal in cats and small dogs. If possible, use anything other than liquid potpourri to scent your home and call animal poison control immediately if ingested.

Home Décor BY FARYAL ALI
Holiday Season Calls for Style
I
f you are entertaining this is a perfect time to dress your windows in new window coverings. I was amazed at the furniture show how much gold has come back. Gold is in the lighting, furniture trim and accessories. Look for Eastern accents in decorative side tables and wall art. Big color for 2016 - Pantone Turkish Blue, as shown in the title above. FIVE EASY FIX UPS • Sheers • Side panels • Decorative Hardware & Tiebacks • Hunter Douglas Blinds • Bedding
SIDE PANELS Add drapery side panels to your existing blinds. Blinds emphasize the boxed look of the window space. You want more elegance in the room. Nothing exudes luxury as fabric does. Add a pair of side panels on a decorative pole or stunning medallions. Panels do 2 things - eliminate light gaps on the sides of the shades plus introduces texture and color in the design scheme. UPDATE HARDWARE The right hardware selected for finish and interesting elements really are a big hit. We have decorative poles that can be curved for bay windows, motorized drapery tracks and decorative poles for sheers and stationary panels as well as outdoor drapery poles. Add decorative tiebacks to make an old drapery panel look new.
SHEERS Add sheers to windows to create a soft, billowy feel. Sheers minimize the glare, while softening the edges and adding a light feel to the room. Check out our lustrous sheers with fabulous textures and designs. Sheers done super full look so luxurious without adding bulk to the room. Need more privacy? Add a Hunter Douglas remote controlled honeycomb blind for room darkening and added privacy.
BEDDING Dress your bed in style. Nothing refreshes a bedroom as new bedding. Quality bedding has a totally different look and feel from store bought. Donate your old headboards and get a large custom headboard. Add drama with tufting, nail head trim, diamond pattern. The choices are exciting. We have over 200 different patterns for you to choose from. Make it special…make it different.

Plan a Perfect Party with Happy Fiesta BY DOREEN ROBINSON
I
t’s party time and there’s a new store in town that will help you plan a perfect party that will be the talk of the town!
Happy Fiesta is now open in Pembroke Pines, but has a long and happy history in South Florida, explains co-owner Alessandra Occhino. The family owned business was started by her parents about 35 years ago in Venezuela. Their first South Florida store opened in 2013 in Doral, and Hialeah opened in 2014. The Pembroke Pines location is their third store and they have plans to open a store in Westchester and other locations in the future. The store carries a wide variety of party supplies and accessories for all types of celebrations. One of their specialties is Hora Loca merchandise. “Hora Loca is Spanish for “The Crazy Hour,” an hour-long show where performers wear flashy outfits, resembling those from Brazil’s carnival, and pass around glowing lights, party hats and masks to encourage guests to dance,” says Alessandra. “Initially it was only done at weddings, but it has spread to different theme parties and Latin countries.” The motto at Happy Fiesta is: “Everything under one roof!” And if they don’t carry an item, they are happy to order it for the customer. Whether you are planning a baby shower, announcing a baby’s gender, throwing a first birthday party or a christening, Happy Fiesta has everything you need, from paper goods to decorations and balloons to banners. They also have Disney character merchandise and Pinatas proudly made in the USA.
While she grew up working in her parent’s store, Alessandra also attended university, studying sociology and marketing. She went on to work for HBO and later went back to her family roots working at Happy Fiesta.
If you’re entertaining for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year’s and the Super Bowl you’ll find the best products and prices for party supplies at Happy Fiesta. Their New Year’s Eve celebration kit includes glasses, whistles, noise makers and hats. Alessandra has helpful advice for planning a party. She tells customers to start planning for the party

with enough time, so if you need something specific it can be ordered ahead of time. The store can also personalize the items if the customer orders them early enough. She also says when planning a party that it’s important to keep in mind the number, age and gender of guests, your budget, theme and time of event and what is allowed in terms of decorating if you are booking your party at a hall instead of doing the party at home. To throw a great party, Alessandra says you need to focus on the details. “The details and decorations put the people in the right mood for the party.” Other things to consider are food and drinks, entertainment for the different age groups, and party favors.
Alessandra say she gets a lot of satisfaction in helping people put together their special occasions. The staff at Happy Fiesta offers great customer service and welcomes the opportunity to help customers. They can also help you plan a corporate party and will soon offer party supply rentals such as tables, chairs and tents. “We are here to stay and serve the community,” says Alessandra. “We want to make your special occasions unforgettable!” Shop at Happy Fiesta for the best service and selection for all your party needs. Happy Fiesta is located at 15851 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, FL 33027. Store hours are Monday - Friday 9:30a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday 8:30a.m. – 9p.m. and Sunday 10a.m. – 6p.m. For more information, call 754-210-6044.
