RT SERVE AND STUDIO 18 IN THE PINES WILL BRING TOGETHER the visual and performing arts on February 26 when they celebrate the opening of “Deep in the Dark Forest,” a new exhibit running through April 7 at the community art space. The two-hour opening reception will allow guests to mingle with the featured artists, have a front row seat at a special performance of “The Little Match Girl” by Body and Soul Dance Theatre set against artist Beth Amato’s riveting interpretative video installation, enjoy refreshments and have the opportunity to purchase art. Inspired by the dark side of reality, “Deep in the Dark Forest” explores the emotional and sociological influences that inspire artistic expression and bring the “shadow side,” or the darkness that resides within all of us, to light. From fanciful and uplifting to brooding and introspective, some of South Florida’s most talented artists use the inspiration to share their unique perspectives within a variety of mediums. “The thought provoking art, based on a childhood staple, is certain to elicit powerful reactions from our guests,” said Holly Bonkowski, Division Director of Cultural Arts for the City of Pembroke Pines. 8

Featured artists Zander Brant, Michael Ferrara, Richard Ferrugio, Brian Hall, Mon Jones, Alyssa Ligmont, Mary Polhmann, Elizabeth Reed, Don Sheffield and Celia Reigle have given visual life, with a decided twist, to the fairytales of childhood. The artists have taken on challenges to be overcome, the villain to be slain, and the quest to be completed, asking “what if the challenge was to accept the villain that lay inside of all of us, and the quest was to bring the darkness in the villain to light to be transformed?” Studio 18 in the Pines, located at 1101 Poinciana Drive, Pembroke Pines, Florida 33025, is an 11,000-square-foot facility dedicated to showcasing contemporary art and serving the community. The studio offers affordable space for emerging and mid-career juried artists. Inside Studios range in size, are well lit and have sinks., while outside workspaces are perfect for large scale sculptors, welders or wood workers. Resident artists participate in exhibitions throughout the year which draw hundreds of people and enjoy 24-hour secure access, the ability to teach their craft in Studio 18 classrooms and have full use of the artist’s’ lounge. Pembroke Pines Doctor Brings Smiles to the Dominican Republic BY ANDRE A C ARNIERO

T

HIS MONTH PEMBROKE PINES DENTIST ARUN K. Garg will make his 42nd trip to the Dominican Republic. But far from enjoying the country’s tourism offerings, the doctor will be leading a team of more than 25 U.S.-based dental professionals who will use their time to provide a wide range of services, from simple cleaning to complex surgery for the many men, women and children of the Dominican Republic who do not have the means or access to good dental health professionals, all free of charge. Dr. Garg, founder of the Center for Dental Implants and charitable foundation The Garg Foundation, has sponsored many missions to various countries, but has found himself returning over and over to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where city officials have been accommodating and, in the past year, Dr. Garg has constructed a Foundation-funded building dedicated to seeing patients. The 26-chair location is complete with state-of-the-art dental equipment which enables Dr. Garg and his doctors to provide approximately $2 million in free dental services on each trip. The Garg Foundation provides more than $25 million in dental services to people in need every year. “Our Foundation work has grown significantly in the last few years, and our trips are now monthly - with dozens of dentists joining us for these missions,” said Dr. Garg, who began the trips about eight years ago. Many of the dentists joining Dr. Garg on his trips are former students eager to follow in Dr. Garg’s footsteps in providing the highest levels of dental care to those who may not otherwise have access to it. In fact, Dr. Garg (who was a full-time professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine for 18 years) has developed an interna-

His curriculum and conferences have trained thousands of dentists across the country in the techniques and procedures for successful implants. Today, those students use their knowledge to perform three days of surgeries on each trip (from Thursday to Saturday). Says Dr. Garg, “It has been a gratifying experience to work with the men, women and children of the Dominican Republic and to offer services which many of us in the United States take for granted.”

THE PHIL ANTHROPIST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.

Healing Together BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

NAME:

Kristi Krueger CAUSE:

Susan B Anthony Recovery Center BACKGROUND: For residents of South Florida, Kristi Krueger is a familiar face, having graced TV screens as Channel 10’s longtime anchor and health reporter. But for the families at the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center she’s more than just a local celebrity. Krueger began volunteering at the center more than six years ago after a friend who worked there brought it to her attention; today, she is a “proud” board member and has brought her own family into the fold. “I did one report on the treatment center and the unique ways it helps women and children and was hooked,” says Krueger. “Later, my daughter Kelsie, got involved, babysitting at the center and spearheading Mother’s Day gift drives and ‘Bedding-In-A Bag’ drives for the children.” ABOUT THE SUSAN B. ANTHONY RECOVERY CENTER: Established in 1995 by a group of women from the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale, The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center has grown from one group home, housing five mothers and six children, to a 5.5 acre campus in Pembroke Pines with the capacity to serve more than sixty families. “The Susan B Anthony Recovery Center is one the few full-service recovery centers in the country providing residential and outpatient treatment in a loving, structured environment, where moms can get the support they need while still living with and caring for their children,” says Krueger. “It’s a unique place where families heal together.” Though Krueger says the families who enter the Center come from varied backgrounds and experiences, she calls her time with each of them “inspiring.” “[The moms] share one thing... the SBARC has saved their lives and helped them to become better parents and more positive individuals,” she says. “Seeing the bond between the mothers and children grow stronger as the women get healthier is absolutely gratifying.” UPCOMING PL ANS: Krueger says the Center is always in need of funding to help reach more women and children (and spruce up the buildings) as well as volunteers to help keep things running. They’re also gearing up for an April “Night of Stars” event at Pine Island Ridge Country Club hosted by Krueger and featuring live entertainment and a silent auction. For more information on The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center visit susanbanthonycenter.org.

‘‘

I was first inspired to get involved [with volunteering] when I heard a speaker at my school talk about the responsibility we all have as members of the community to give back. Over the years, my children have volunteered alongside me, so I hope I have instilled that same sense of responsibility and joy in paying it forward that I first found as a teen.”

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FR ANK C. ORTIS, CIT Y OF PEMBROKE PINES

M

ANY NEW YEAR RESOlutions were made and, for most of us, they are probably already being broken. However, if getting fit or social is part of your New Year’s resolution, February is a great month to join the many classes offered at the SWFP Community Center. For additional information please call 954.450.6888 and ask for the activities desk or visit www.ppines.com, click on Departments and select Community Services. This new year began with growth and exciting changes. The City’s purchase of a postal distribution center at the end of last year on a 27-acre site at the corner of Dykes Road and Pines Boulevard has allowed the City to incur a $5.7 million profit upon its sale. The developer’s plans transform the post office building into a modern commercial and retail space, and adds 120 single family homes. This not only brings new revenue into our City, but also gives current and new residents the opportunity to purchase single family homes and shop at the same location. We also are all watching with excitement as our Civic and Cultural Center continues to be built, taking shape. In addition to our internal growth, the municipal boundaries for the City also grew by approximately 60 acres when the annexation of the former Broward County Women’s Correction Institute parcel became official. The City of Pembroke Pines now consists of approximately 22,237 acres or 34.8 square miles. More information on these and other various issues, along with a glimpse at what SWFP Community Center will be happening in our future, will all be discussed at my annual State of the City Address on Monday, February 24, 2016. It will be held at 7PM at City Hall in the Commission Chambers, 10100 Pines Boulevard. I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting and sharing ideas. This is also the time of year that our Pembroke Pines Charter School System’s admissions lottery is underway-- now through March 20, 2016. Students currently in our system have been notified to re-enroll, those on the waiting list were asked for updates and those who wish to enter the lottery should visit pinescharter.net As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. 5 Reasons To Need to Add Faith-Based Trips to Your Bucket List! BY CL ARONA WILLIAMS, TR AV EL ADVISOR

1. Epic Adventures - You embark on a guided excursion through the lands of Jerusalem, where Jesus and his disciples traveled and spread their good news. Experience the healing minerals of the Dead Sea in Qumran. Visit the Franciscan Wedding Church at Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle turning water into wine. You can see where Jesus fed 5,000 in Tabgha, with fish and loaves of bread. 2. History - Visit Jesus’s childhood home in Nazareth, or the synagogue where Jesus taught in exquisite Capernaum. Take in the view at Mount Olives where Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection. You can see the baptismal site of John the Baptist, explore the archaeological digs in Israel or simply immerse yourself in the history of the land. 3. Faithful Cuisine - What foods did Jesus and his disciples enjoy? Enjoy a biblical feast of traditional food and wine. Israel has some of the best fruits, fish and breads. Experience a traditional meal with the oils and herbs of the land, in a traditional stew with lamb. Taste the “Bread of Life” accompanied by fish and finish it off with some figs, pomegranates and grapes. 4. Enlightenment - Experience praying with other Christians from all over the world in the oldest churches where Jesus and his followers once worshiped. You can pray and meditate at the Church of Pater Noster, the tomb of the Virgin Mary at Mount Zion, the Upper Room where Jesus held the Last Supper, the Pool of Bethesda where Jesus performed the Sabbath Miracle. You can also celebrate Mass at the Basilica of the Annunciation. 5. Memories - This is a once in a lifetime trip. Even if you never return to the Holy

Lands, the memories, stories and pictures you have will pay for themselves over and over again, making it a more than worthwhile investment in your spiritual growth. Memories for a lifetime!

WHY YOU NEED A TRAVEL ADVISOR?

You are familiar with all the special discount sites offering rock bottom deals for luxury travel. Unfortunately, some people miss the fine print or don’t get everything they need for their trip such as excursions, transfers and travel insurance. When they arrive at their destination, they may end up spending way more than they budgeted, because it was not included as part of their vacation package. Imagine buying a meal in pieces, versus purchasing the combo. You’d end up spending double for the same meal.

WHY TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Imagine arriving at your destination, you took months to save for, weeks to plan and maybe dreaming of for years to be disappointed with some mishap that is not in your control. Travel protection covers things like lost luggage, cancelled flights and medical emergencies, especially getting sick while you are away. Would you not rather to have peace of mind and relaxation while traveling? Clarona Williams, a travel advisor, is an experienced traveler and dedicates her time to serving others. SPOTLIGHT EVENT

Tour de Broward BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

5

gram, one of only two of its kind in South Florida.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE TOUR DE BROWARD

Tour de Broward has also underwritten programs at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, helping to improve the lives of many oncology patients and families. This year, we’ve chosen to support a variety of pediatric programs as they aim to grow and expand what can be offered to the community.

QUESTIONS WITH: JENNIFER MOSSADEGHI, MANAGER OF SPECIAL events for the Memorial Healthcare System (and one of the driving forces behind February 28th’s Tour de Broward)

Seven years ago, Al Fernandez, a longtime supporter of the Memorial Healthcare System and president of the ANF Group, approached our CEO, Frank Sacco, about creating a fundraiser that would benefit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Both men are avid cyclists and they envisioned a community event that would include their exercise passion and other healthy activities. Their vision became the Tour de Broward. In its six-year history, the event has raised more than $2 million to aid the growth of the children’s hospital, including nearly $450,000 last year.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EVENTS AND HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED THIS YEAR?

The Tour de Broward consists of 50 and 100K bicycle rides, a 5K timed run, 3K walk, and the “Power of Play Kids Zone.” More than 5,500 people participated or supported us in 2015 and we’re hoping to eclipse that total this year. In addition to whatever event they may be doing on Sunday, February 28, participants from the tri-county area will enjoy breakfast and lunch from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the food tent while enjoying great stage entertainment. People can also stroll through our vendor infield, which includes a variety of local businesses offering giveaways and product samples. Children 13 and under will be able to run, jump, skip, slide, throw, and eat in a kids zone created especially for them.

HOW DOES THE MONEY RAISED VIA THE TOUR DE BROWARD IMPACT JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL?

Joe DiMaggio Hospital is South Broward’s only pediatric hospital and one that primarily serves residents in Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties. As it expands its services and programs to the community, the need to fundraise becomes greater than ever. Previously, dollars generated have supported the hospital’s Heart Institute, which provides children a complete continuum of care from diagnosis to repair of congenital defects and other cardiac dysfunctions. Within that is our transplant pro26

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | February 2016

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS DOES IT SUPPORT?

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR?

My thrills come from seeing thousands of South Floridians joining together with our Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital patients and families at Miramar Regional Park, all

united by one common cause. Turning an empty grass field into a major event takes the efforts of an amazing committee and sponsors who remain committed to the success of this event on an annual basis. Watching all of the team’s hard work result in significant gains for children’s healthcare is very exciting, as is hearing the laughter and seeing the camaraderie of coworkers, teammates, family, and friends. It’s also inspiring to watch our pediatric patients participate in the event. These are kids who have won their fight against a life-threatening medical condition and are now well enough to actively participate in a health and fitness-focused event. The children are amazingly resilient, and hearing how far they’ve progressed since their most critical time reminds all of us why this event is so important and why we all do what we do to make it a success. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

PET OF THE MONTH

Meet Lexus

L

EXUS IS A TINY TEA-CUP 6 YEAR OLD POODLE 2.5 POUND FEMALE. Her favorite person is my husband because he gives her doggie treats all the time. Lexus’ favorite toy is a tiny tennis ball and she loves watching TV, taking pictures, eating treats and dressing up (really, she will go get her dress if she thinks she’s going somewhere). And though she doesn’t like getting shots, her favorite thing to do is to sit on the sofa with me.

Help Your Dog Fight Flu Season

P

EOPLE WHO HAVE SUFFERED FROM THE FLU KNOW HOW EXHAUSTing the fever, chills and upset stomach can be. Your dog may be at risk for the same symptoms. One type of canine influenza virus – CIV H3N8 – has been around for years, and a new type (CIV H3N2) was identified in Chicago in March 2015. Since then, the virus has spread to more than 25 states, according to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Health Diagnostic Center.

If it’s important

KEEP IT SAFE

CIV H3N2 is spread through direct contact with respiratory secretions from infected dogs and from contact with contaminated objects, such as toys, clothing, water bowls, etc. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, dogs frequently in contact with other dogs are at high risk of infection. This includes dogs that are boarded, enrolled in day care and visit groomers or dog parks. “I take my dogs to dog parks and because they’re social, I’m concerned they’ll catch the virus and it will spread in those areas,” said Kelsey Risher, a Chicago-area owner of two active dogs. In the initial phase of infection, the dog appears healthy, but can spread the virus to other dogs. Symptoms include: coughing, sneezing, loss of appetite, lethargy, fever and discharge from the eyes and nose. Most dogs recover in two to three weeks. However, because CIV H3N2 can be difficult to diagnose and in severe instances may be fatal, effective prevention is critical. In November 2015, Zoetis, the world’s largest animal health company, was the first to be granted a conditional license for a vaccine for CIV H3N2. “I’ll be telling clients I recommend the vaccination,” said Dr. Scott Rovner, a Chicago veterinarian. “I’ll be vaccinating my own two dogs who go to day care. I think it’s going to be a great product to help slow down and lessen the clinical signs that we see with our patients.” Preventive measures to help protect your dog include: »» Washing toys, bowls and bedding regularly. »» After contact with other dogs, wash your hands thoroughly before handling your own pet. »» Consulting with your veterinarian regarding the appropriate vaccination protocol for your dog. By following these simple measures and consulting your veterinarian, this flu season can be easier for your canine companions. Bring On The Needles, The Newest Weapon Against Aging BY DR. MONIQUE BAIN

A

CUPUNCTURE FACELIFTS ARE GAINing popularity for those seeking alternatives to surgery and chemical injections like Botox and for those willing to experience the power of Oriental medicine in the name of beauty. If needles in your face seem weird or bizarre; think again, because it’s the newest weapon to fight aging without negative side effects. The procedure has been covered by Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, The New York Times, ABC News and many more. If you become familiar with the signs of aging (think drooping eyelids, sagging jowls, lines around the mouth, dark circles around the eyes) or just want to prevent the signs of aging, an acupuncture face-lift might be the solution. Facial rejuvenation or face-lift acupuncture was popular with Chinese emperor’s wives and the wealthy in China before the communist takeover. In the past 10 years there’s been more interest in the U.S.. The results are not as drastic as surgery but the treatment lifts, brightens and smoothes the skin in a natural way. If you are wondering if needles in the skin really work as an anti-aging procedure, the answer is yes, but not for the reason you might think.According to Oriental medicine, our physical appearance is connected to our internal organs, so if you suffer from years of insomnia, back pain, chronic stress, digestive problems or menstrual irregularities it will show on your face. Those aging signs cannot be erased by slathering anti-aging cream, at least not for long. For example, sagging skin can be caused by weakness of the spleen, while darkness around the eyes is often linked to weakness of the liver or stomach. Treating those organs through the face is actually treating the underlying

cause, so facial rejuvenation works to make you stronger from the inside, changing how you look outside. The other explanation is that when needles are inserted in the skin, the body reacts sending more red blood cells to the area, stimulating the immune response and stimulating the production of collagen, the protein responsible for tightening the skin. Common side effects of treatment are better sleep, more energy and feeling more vibrant and relaxed. In the case of acupuncture face-lift or facial rejuvenation, we recommend six- to-eight weekly treatments if the patient is under 40, while those over 40 are recommended 10-to-12 weekly treatments. Treatments are between 45 and 70 minutes long and results become visible after the third or fourth treatment. Occasional maintenance is recommended. Treatments will erase fine lines and make deep wrinkles less visible and give the skin a youthful glow. Treatments cost varies depending on the practitioner from $100 to $300 per treatment. When shopping for a practitioner, find a board certified acupuncturist who is licensed in your state as well as someone who can answer all your questions. While cosmetic acupuncture patients shouldn’t expect drastic, immediate results after one session, most report seeing changes rather quickly. Monique Bain, L.Ac, Dipl.Ac. graduated from the Academy of Five Element Acupuncture in Gainesville, with her degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and is Nationally Board Certified in Acupuncture. Five Element Wellness Center is located at 7310 W. McNab Rd. - Ste 107 in Tamarac and 17150 Royal Palm Blvd. Suite 1 Weston, FL 33321.
