Sensational Seventh Annual “Taste of Pines” A Sell Out BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO
F
EATURING DELICIOUS FOOD OFFERINGS FROM 43 LOCAL REStaurants, liberal libations and the Latin beats of Tito Puente, Jr. the 7th Annual Taste of Pines event led to a sold out night benefiting the Pembroke Pines Charter School System. “Our Taste of Pines event gets better every year. The evening combined the generosity of our local restaurants, and food stores to benefit our award winning Pembroke Pines Charter School System and the music of Tito Puente, Jr knocked this event out of the park,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis. This year organizers from the Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department added a VIP section and a Beer Garden to the event, which was held at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center, and brought back the popular Wall of Wines sponsored by Trader Joe’s. The VIP Lounge provided guests additional menu items prepared by chefs from Club Nineteen and the Ceviche Bar, an intimate atmosphere, a private entrance, preferred parking, private lounge area, extended event hours, a meet and greet with Tito Puente Jr., an hour open bar for those age 21 years and older and access to the full scope of the event and a souvenir glass to remember the night. “The new VIP Lounge was a hit,” said Francie Novo, special events coordinator for the city of Pembroke Pines and chair of the Taste of Pines event. “Our limited number of $50 per person tickets quickly sold out and we are thinking of ways to enhance next year’s event.” Plans will soon be underway for the Eighth Annual Taste of Pines event. Interested sponsors please contact the Pembroke Pines Special Events Office at 954-435-6525. All funds raised benefit the Award Winning Pembroke Pines Charter School System.

More than 200 fourth and fifth elementary school students from the Pembroke Pines Charter Central Campus were “immersed” in science education by WaterVentures, a Florida Learning Lab. WaterVentures arrived in the form of a customized 53-foot semi-trailer to provide Florida Specific Environmental Educational Awareness through a hands on outreach program. Each portion of the truck is aligned to the fourth and fifth grade lessons on Florida’s resources, the water cycle, weather, and conservation. WaterVentures features multiple A/V educational presentations, indoor and outdoor hands-on student experiences including watershed tables, a relief map of Florida’s water features, recycling exhibits, product distribution bins, and a demonstration table. The indoor and outdoor Science Lab provided students a 60-minute intensive, hands-on exhibits and experiences highlighting the delicate environmental issues facing Florida and its water. “WaterVentures provided our students a greater understanding of the delicate issues facing the Florida watershed and it directly parallels with their science curriculum,” said Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School science teacher Kelly Hughes. “Our students developed a greater understanding of how water moves through our lives.” Twenty-four South Florida schools were chosen for a visit by Water Ventures, two of those schools were from the Pembroke Pines Charter School System.

Fourth Annual Walk for the Animals BY PPCN STAFF
T
HE FOURTH ANNUAL WALK FOR THE ANIMALS BROKE RECORDS this year, raising more than $2,500 to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County, Milo’s Dog Rescue and the Wildlife Care Center. More than 300 people attended the event at Archbishop McCarthy High School where they walked the animals, donated pet food and supplies and gave generously to the cause. “Our club members have a deep love for animals and met several times to brainstorm new ways to raise funds,” said Cristin Calder, Science Department Chair/AP Biology Instructor and Moderator for the Friends of the Animal Club at Archbishop McCarthy High School. The students added a bake sale, sold water, hot chocolate, coffee and Walk for the Animals shirts, in addition to soliciting donations prior to the walk. “The students are so happy to see how extra effort on their part paid big dividends for the animals,” said Calder, who estimated that attendance increased by 200 people and funds increased by $800 over 2015. Special guests included Maverick, Archbishop McCarthy’s mascot and Digger, mascot of the Humane Society. The two mascots had a great time posing for photos and dancing with participants to music provided by Archbishop McCarthy student DJ Fiallo. “We encourage people to adopt,” Maverick told the crowd, alongside a barking Digger. Throughout the walk the dogs enjoyed fresh bowls of water, dog biscuits, shade and assorted “fun” colored waste bags. The schools Friends of the Animal Club members work throughout the year to raise funds and awareness about the importance of animal adoption, culminating in the annual walk for the animals. 120 High School Students Trained in CPR BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO
O
N A RECENT SCHOOL DAY ONE HUNDRED twenty students from the Health Opportunities through Physical Education (H.O.P.E.) class at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School received instruction and hands on training in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) for adults and infants, and the Heimlich maneuver. “Students have very busy lives, bringing the CPR training to the school is providing an educational opportunity
they may not have thought about seeking out,” said Kathie Schmidt, the HOPE and Physical Education teacher at PPCHS The class, taught by Lt. Ruben Rodriguez and Jamie Shires, both Firefighter/ Paramedics with the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department, was a result of the “Save a Life, Bystander CPR and AED Training Week”( February 1 through February 5, 2016) City Resolution passed by the City of Pembroke Pines Mayor and Commission. “Having this opportunity to teach high school students CPR will have an impact on society, especially on the lives of those in need of immediate assistance,” said City of Pembroke Pines Fire Marshall Sandra Lluis. In addition to the CPR training at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School, the City provided free evening Family and Friends CPR Training” and will offer classes for City employees through March. SPRING CLEANING
Spring Cleaning
PRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER (HELLO MARCH 20!) AND WHILE the season means an end to winter doldrums for most, it’s also traditionally and historically a time to organize, clean and generally hit refresh on all aspects of our life. Not sure where to start? Take a tip from our experts below and get a head start on a time-honored tradition. BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
Top Ten Tips for Getting Organized
O
sional organizer and owner of Miami-based AcTuaLLy Organized. “These clutter items hold you back, letting go frees up space and allows the beauty of a space to shine through.” The key to making it through a major overhaul is to start small, says Jacobs. Approaching spring cleaning one task at a time and breaking it down into smaller steps
RGANIZING A HOME CAN BE AN OVERWHELMING process and getting started can easily go from good intentions to giving up. But powering through the initial fear will leave you with more than just a decluttered living room. “Organizing clears out the old unused, unwanted, broken, unloved items that take up valuable space in your home,” says Gayle Jacobs, profes-
will allow novices to schedule specific times to attack the problem without becoming discouraged or overwhelmed. “Pick one area that is the most problematic, starting with one room and then divide that job into smaller doable segments,” says Jacobs. “Pick one area of a room, perhaps one shelf of the closet, one cabinet at a time.”
So for those who need a little expert advice, here are Jacobs’ ten tips for getting started:
1 5 8
Begin with a small area. Pick an area that you can finish in one-totwo hours and give yourself a time frame to clear and organize.
4
Make use of all walls and doors, either using hooks, bars, or over the door storage systems.
9
T
he initial overhaul may actually be the easy part when a beautifully-organized room takes on a not-so-organized family. “Make it a quest of yours to be ruthless when it comes to your decluttering efforts,” says Jacobs. “You’ll have less to dust, less clutter to look it, an easier time finding the things you do use and less stress in your life.” To get family and friends on board Jacobs says she uses this simple mantra:
If you open it, close it. If you finish it, replace it. If it’s full, empty it. If you take it off, hang it up.
10
If it’s dirty, wash it. If it’s garbage, trash it.
With everything in its pace and a place for everything you are now organized.
Here are her tips for making the most of your closet.
WHAT ARE THE BEST ITEMS TO CONSIGN? We are a middle market store, so we take trend labels, everything from jeans, tops, jackets and formal gowns to handbags, shoes and jewelry. We like things from chain stores, department stores and boutiques. WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR A GOOD CONSIGNMENT ITEM? If you loved it at one time maybe someone will too! Just make sure it’s freshly laundered or dry cleaned and free

JACOBS’ ORGANIZATIONAL MANTRA
If you take it out, put it away.
Some spaces are easy to access while some spaces are more difficult. Place items that you use everyday in easy accessible spaces and those items used less often in spaces that are less accessible.
Use your space to its maximum by looking at the height, width and depth of an area. Get containers that fit that space.
O NOW YOU’VE CLEANED YOUR CLOSETS LIKE A pro… but what to do with all the, ahem, leftovers? Consign it, says Jennifer Kaloti, owner of Pinecrest’s The Recycled Closet. A longtime consignment shopper, Kaloti opened The Recycled Closet in 2008 and soon became a go-to source for South Florida fashionistas, earning accolades including AOL City’s Best, CBS 4 Miami Best Thrift Shop in South Florida 2010, and Miami New Times Best Thrift Shop 2013. “Consignment is a great way to make a little extra money without any hassles,” says Kaloti.

Enlist family and or a friend to help keep you on track.
When putting things back into a closet or into a cabinet you may need some organizing tools to maximize your space. Take a look at shelf dividers, drawer dividers or risers to double the space of a shelf. Lazy susans are great for hard to reach corners and work especially well in big corner cabinets. Shelf dividers help purses to be stored upright without slouching over.
Cashing In

Looked at each item and make a decision on what to keep, what to donate and what to trash.
Determine where an item should live. Ask yourself “Does this belong here? Does it make sense to keep it here? Is there a closer or more convenient place to keep it?”

Create the vision of how you want the space to look. Remember your vision of a beautifully cleared and organized space and how good that feels. Be strong and let go of the things that no longer serve your best interest.
It you buy a new one, get rid of an old one If you have more than one, donate it If you no longer need it, say goodbye to it
from stains and tears. We typically look at 20-50 items at a time. Just bring them neatly folded in a shopping bag. HOW DOES THE CONSIGNMENT PROCESS WORK? “I am so proud of my accomplishment and I feel great!”
I
AM HONORED AND PRIVIleged to announce that I have been re-elected unopposed to serve four more years in this great city. It gives me immense pleasure to serve the remarkable residents of Pembroke Pines. I thank you all for 24 years of support. With that said, this month is election month and I encourage everyone to vote, not only for people to represent us locally and nationally, but also for important initiatives that directly affect lives. Though opinions differ and not everyone may be pleased with the outcome, we are a democratic nation. That means that we all work together with the outcome. We cooperate, move forward and seek the best for everyone involved. We all don’t have to agree, we just need to have respect for one another’s views to keep discussions open and communication flowing. It’s how our country was founded. My hope for 2016 is that our citizens take the Presidential election seriously and look in-depth at the important issues that are affecting us all both here and abroad. Too many important issues from healthcare, immigration, gun violence and the economy to terrorism and climate change are on the table. Let your voices be heard in voting for the right person who will lead our country during these tumultuous times. For those who think a general election is not as important as a primary election, remember that each vote is a voice as an American citizen, and every vote matters. Voting doesn’t guarantee that your preference will prevail, however, choosing not to vote denies you your right to be heard. MUSIC NEWS
Valuable Instruments Collecting Dust in the Closet BY PENNY DANIEL S
M
USIC FILLED THE AIR. THE loud sounds, the high pitches and the beat of the drums got the attention of the audience. The orchestra began playing the overture introducing the Broadway play – The Beauty and the Beast. The play was about to begin. The stage was set, the actors were ready, and the musicians were in their places ready to make the story come alive through music. Tones from the flute, piano, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and drums, raised excitement for the opening act. Throughout the play, music of various octaves directed our emotions and anticipation of what would happen next. Can you imagine what this play would have been like without music? As the play unfolded, we let our emotions play along with the sounds of music. It reminded me of a time when I played a musical instrument and performed in front of others. Boy, it seems like a lifetime ago when I learned invaluable lessons and fell in love with music. A long time ago, I learned how to read music, play the flute, play in a band and enjoyed working together with
others to create musical entertainment. But… where is that old flute? Is it collecting dust in the closet? In the attic? Do I still even have it? Hmmm…it may be time to search for it and see if it still works? Is it valuable since it’s almost an antique? According to the 2009 U.S. Census data, about eight percent of Americans play musical instruments regularly. Are you part of that eight percent? If not…do you want to regularly play a musical instrument again? It’s never too late. Get that old instrument out of the closet. Dust it off. Or you may even consider trading it in towards a new instrument; you have several options, but the first step is taking it out of the closet. Instruments are valuable – both in the monetary and cultural senses. Your local music store can help you decide what is best for you and your old instrument. Maybe it’s relearning how to play the instrument. Maybe it’s trading it in for something new and different. Whatever your decision is, let us help you. Stop in today and see what is available…let music fill your life and let the fun begin!

Launched in Fort Lauderdale in 2010, the program— a 60-minute blend of indoor rowing, treadmill interval training and weight training—now boasts 360 studios in 36 states and seven countries. “[OrangeTheory Fitness] talked to us about opening a studio in July 2011, when no one knew what OrangeTheory Fitness was and now we have nine locations, between Central and South Florida, Atlanta & East LA,” says Gary Hirsch, owner of the brand’s Miramar franchise (among others). So why the rapid growth? OrangeTheory Fitness’s popularity (it was called “the best one-hour workout in the country” by The New York Times) stems from a combination of the appeal of group personal training, an after burn effect that keeps members burning fat for up to 36 hours post-workout and, oh yes, one more thing. “Results, results, results,” says Hirsch. “People do this for a couple of weeks and they can see a big difference.” Another aspect of the program that draws fans is the

broad appeal of the workout. Because members wear a heart monitor (the goal is to keep heart rates in a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy – the orange zone) they are able to safely and effectively work within their own comfort area. “We are for everyone, from people who have never worked out before to the elite athlete,” says Hirsch. “That’s the great thing, that it is for everybody, they just have to go at their own pace.” That personalization also extends to the front desk, says Hirsch, who cites a balance of regular OrangeTheory Fitness workouts and nutrition with helping two young members shed 40 lbs. in just three months. “We give a lot of personal attention, a lot of one-on-one, we know their names, we know their faces. We want people to get results and be happy,” he says. “We try to teach people, this is not a quick fix, it is a lifestyle; working out four times a week, eating right, making better choices… it is a balance of everything.” In addition to working at their own pace, OrangeTheory Fitness members benefit from having a personal trainer right there to help or modify the exercises for those who are working with injuries or limitations and sometimes just taking the pressure off. “If a person has not worked out in a while we tell them on the first week to take it easy, not to worry about getting into that orange zone or the red, just get familiar with the workout,” says Hirsch. But for those who want to push their

limits, the OrangeTheory Fitness trainers can also be the motivation they’re looking for. “You have intervals when you are on the treadmill, bike or striker, then you have intervals when you are at a more comfortable pace, an interval where you are at a more intense pace…the trainer will do that,” he says. “People on their own are not going to get to where they are uncomfortable. It is not easy but it is worth it for your overall wellbeing.” Hirsch says that the response from the Miramar community has been universally positive and excited, mostly as a result of the combination of the program’s results and efficiency. “One of the best things is that you’re in and out in one hour, people don’t waste time waiting for equipment or not knowing what to do,” he says. But, in the end, says Hirsch, it also comes down to the enjoyment factor. “Most people don’t think working out is fun and when they do this they have fun,” he says. “It is fun, it is motivating and the trainers are very inspiring. It’s difficult to work out that hard on your own.” For more information and free class visit orangetheoryfitness.com/Miramar. 12316 Miramar Pkwy, Miramar, FL 33025; (954) 908-3636.

5 Reasons Businesses Should Use Incentive Travel Programs BY CL ARONA WILLIAMS, TR AV EL ADVISOR
W
HAT DO THE MOST SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES have in common? They strive to keep their employees happy. Yes, they focus on their employees to grow their business. According to Forbes business, companies that ranked highest for employee incentive programs are Google, The Coca Cola Company, and General Electric to name a few. If you are a small business or even a large business, your main concern should be employee retention, employee motivation and employee team building to creative a thriving and successful business. Here are the five reasons why travel incentive programs are the way to go
1. Cost effective- It’s an affordable way to motivate your employees. Companies can greatly benefit because of the flexibility and cost effectiveness. Travel incentive programs are easy to implement and offer luxurious travel options. 2. Exciting Vacations- A cruise is surely the most exciting incentive any organization can offer, because they are all-inclusive and structured to benefit both employer and employees. There are also many all inclusive resorts that deliver adventure activities and opportunities to relax. 3. Increase Loyalty- The psychology behind incentives is that people’s behaviors are dependent on rewards (positive reinforcement). The greater the reward the greater the performance. Maybe you cannot give your top sales person a raise, but you can send her on three-day cruise with her family. What a bonus! 4. Team Building- Incentive travel is not your ordinary conference at a hotel. Take your team on an all-inclusive vacation. This is an opportunity to build authentic

and lasting connections. Employees can bond through activities that require teamwork. Employees will be motivated to improve when they get recognition and rewards for their superior performance and teamwork. 5. Easy and Convenient- You can get an outside travel consultant to plan everything and put things in place, so you don’t have to do the planning yourself or pay anyone in-house to do it. Your trips are not only fun, but have all the necessities included, such as meeting rooms, reception areas, multimedia capabilities and dedicated on-board concierge. There are two main areas of incentive travel programs at Cruise Planners, an American Express Travel representative: Group incentive travel and individual incentive travel. Most cruises have days at sea built into the itinerary. This allows for your group to gather for meetings while at sea, not while you are in port, so you can still have fun. Port time is your time! Explore the destination, eat an exciting new dish, shop at a local market for treasures, or take part in the many planned shore excursions cruising has to offer. Want to zip line through a rainforest, snorkel with stingrays or try a new adventure? Go sightseeing, see the glaciers, tour the Coliseum or kayak in the Caribbean. You and your employees will return with an enhanced experience, relaxed, recharged and ready to tackle the next project with renewed vigor and enthusiasm. Happy employees provide superior services, which keeps your customers loyal! Clarona Williams, a travel advisor, is an experienced traveler and dedicates her time to serving others. HEALTH & WELLNESS
A New Way to Lift and Tighten BY ADRIANA GOMEZ, AG SKINC ARE
I
HAVE TO ADMIT THAT WHEN I FIRST HEARD ABOUT A treatment that promised facial lifting without surgery I was a little skeptical about it, and the overall results. I decided to look deeper into it and really understand this as an alternative to facial surgery, but, to be honest, I found it hard to believe that something noninvasive could tone and smooth areas of the face and neck, lift eyebrows and better the appearance of wrinkles. After extensive research, I found out that Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound to stimulate the production of new collagen deep within the skin in order to achieve the desired results. The treatment works to better the appearance of double chin and skin texture around the eyes and mouth. As an esthetician that has been working in the field for more than 30 years, this sounded scientifically intriguing so I decided to give it a try and get the Ulthera. A year has passed since I made the decision to bring Ulthera into the AG Skincare family, and I could not be happier. All of my clients have been more than satisfied with the results and most of them are coming back for more! The results are honestly incredible, and even more incredible is the fact that Ultherapy is completely non-invasive, with no downtime, and only requires one session of approximately two hours. Although patients can see some lifting and tightening of the face and neck immediately following the treatment, the full effect will build gradually over the course of three months. In order to keep track of the overall results, we take the before pictures on the day of treatment and then retake them three months later. Overall, Ultherapy has revolutionized the aesthetic field. Results are amazing and I

PET HEALTH
The New Trendy Poison for Pets : Electronic Cigarettes BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN
T
HE USE OF E- CIGARETTES OR VAPORIZERS IS increasing as an alternative to the conventional, cancer-causing, tobacco cigarettes. It is debatable whether or not they are as safe as initially thought when they first entered the market. One thing is for sure: they are trendy and come in a variety of exotic flavors such as banana cream pie, chocolate mint and watermelon-pineapple. The electronic unit itself is available as a plastic or stainless steel cylinder. It is composed of a battery, a heating coil (converts liquid to vapor) and a cartridge or basket containing the liquid nicotine. It is this nicotine syrup that represents one of the most dangerous poisons in your pet’s reach. The liquid nicotine is available in different concentrations: one milliliter of the most concentrated liquid can contain the nicotine found in five cigarettes. The tasty syrup will attract even the most finicky pets. For this reason, the increasing popularity of the e-cigarettes have led to an increase in the number of reported nicotine-related pet poisonings and deaths. It is not necessary for the pet to swallow the nicotine syrup to become ill. It is readily absorbed through the oral mucosa. The pet can also absorb spilled nicotine syrup on the floor or the bedside table through the skin. Stepping on a few drops could go unnoticed, but might lead to enough absorption to cause a life threatening medical condition. Smaller pets such as cats and small dogs could get poisoned with minimal amounts of liquid nicotine. Unlike poisoning with tobacco cigarettes, in which signs of toxicity develop within a few hours, signs of e-cigarette toxicity will be seen within 15 to 60 minutes. This leaves pet owners with little time to recognize the signs and act. Signs of nicotine toxicity will vary depending on the amount of poison absorbed. You may see one sign or a combination of signs. Some of them may be: vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, increased heart and respiratory rate, tremors, lack of balance, seizures, blue gums (cyanosis), coma, and/or death. One of the factors that makes nicotine toxicity even more dangerous is that there is no first aid that you can provide at home, even if you recognize the signs in time. Because nicotine syrup is absorbed through mucosa or skin instead of digested, induction of vomiting is useless. The pet must be taken as fast as possible to the nearest veterinary emergency hospital for immediate care. Another factor that makes this poison extremely dangerous is that there is no antidote available. The emergency clinician is limited to treating the symptoms and offering supportive care. In many cases, this is not enough to save the pet’s life. Knowing that nicotine syrup is highly toxic to pets, that there is no known antidote in case of accidental poisoning and that the treatment in many cases fails to save the pet’s life, your best move to avoid pet poisonings is to keep e- cigarettes out of the reach of your pets. Remember smoking or ‘vaping’ is your choice. Do it responsibly by protecting others that do not have that choice.

THE MINDFULL DIVORCÉE
Post-Divorce Equals Spring Cleaning and Renovations BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
S
PRING IS ON THE WAY AND WITH IT PEOPLE START thinking of spring cleaning and renovations. The thought of clearing out the closets and drawers, getting the cobwebs down or big renovation projects can be invigorating, but don’t just limit that to your home, your wardrobe or your looks. View post-divorce like a good spring cleaning - out with the old and in with the new. Start renovating the inside of you, your attitude, your perspective, your thoughts, and your passions. Sometimes we put the focus and the energy on things we can see when really the focus and energy need to be put into what we feel. Working on the things within ourselves that we can’t see will eventually transform into things we and others CAN see. Your positive thoughts will create a whole new life for you. Your forgiveness of those that have wronged you will make you look and feel ten years younger. Your new perspective on life’s situations will cause you not to worry or take things personally. Embracing change and realizing that there is a divine plan will let you relax and not focus on worrisome thoughts. Gratefulness for all that you have instead of complaining about what you don’t have will lead down the path of peace. Practicing mindfulness will keep you grounded in the present moment, which allows you to really enjoy life. Embrace all the experiences you have had because they have brought you wisdom. When life changes, change with it, and when seasons change, put away last season’s things and bring out fresh things for the new one. Dust the cobwebs off of friends you have lost touch with and reconnect. Go through the boxes in your mind long ago packed away and find lost passions, dreams, and interests. Clear out people that won’t be coming with you into your new life and discard old beliefs that no longer serve you.
Decide on the renovations you want to make and list them. Then go back down the list and write a detailed description. For example, maybe one thing on your list is ‘Body’. Under description you could write, “change my hairstyle,” “tone my belly,” or “grow my nails out.” After you do that you can then write the steps that will help you get there and the date you plan on meeting that goal. Perhaps you want to become more spiritual. One of your goals may be to attend meditation classes or plan a retreat. Writing your “renovations” down is a surefire way to get clarity, get organized and get it accomplished. As a divorced mom, it is imperative and okay to take time out for you. Don’t let mother’s guilt deter you from doing your renovations and spring cleaning. Just because you are a divorced mom doesn’t mean you have been eliminated from being a woman. Take care of the one person that is holding the fort down, and that would be YOU! If you feel good, you will look good and be a better mom. If it means getting a babysitter so you can take those meditation classes, then do it. Swap nights with a friend so you can have an at home spa day or attend that book club you always wanted to join. Feed your soul with things that bring you joy and make you smile. Start your renovations now and build a new you from the inside out and while you are at it, plant some flowers and watch them bloom right alongside you!
