FF, WHAT A HECTIC MONTH OF MAY!! ...... SCHOOL AWARD CERemonies, prom parties, end of school field trips and fund raisers. We are really blessed by the activities and energy from both our cities and residents. We have a very nice article from the Pembroke Pines Charter High school on avoiding drunken driving. Keeping our kids safe and educated, really showed this month with all the award ceremonies and awards given around all our schools. Congratulations class of 2016!! Talking about energetic residents, Jessica Millman, from West Side Dance Studio, has a beautiful place that brings world class dance instruction to the Broward area. Keep us moving Jessica. On the philanthropic section this month, our friends from 7 Pecados are arranging a fund raiser to help Yamila, amazing work done here in our home town. Don't forget to see fire works on Independence Day! City of Miramar has arranged a great 4th of July Event from 7-9 pm. Don't miss it. Have a wonderful summer, keep the energy up!

Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Pines Veterans BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

F

OR THE 45TH YEAR IN A ROW, Pembroke Pines City Officials, residents, family and friends visited Donnith H. Fletcher Veterans Memorial Park to honor and remember the men and women who bravely paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Fletcher himself became the first Pines resident killed in action during the Vietnam War when the helicopter he was aboard was shot down in June of 1970. “We gather to honor the memory of the fallen and to honor those who continue to serve in the United States Military,” Mayor Frank C. Ortis told the crowd of more than 300 on June 3. The solemn ceremony, during which residents pay their respects and witness the laying of the wreath at the Veterans Monument, was officiated by Chaplain and Captain Vincent Scardino a Firefighter for the City of Pembroke Pines Fire Department. In an emotional speech Major Everett “Bud” Lacroix of the Unites States Southern Command reflected on the true meaning of Memorial Day. “As Major Lacroix spoke, many people were moved to tears,” said Lana Tropeano of the Pembroke Pines Special Events department. Following the ceremony Major and Mrs. Lacroix spoke with Beulah Fletcher Simons, Donnie’s mother, now in her eighties. “You will have a difficult time believing this, but Donnie would be 67 years old now,” said Mrs. Fletcher Simons. Fletcher was awarded a posthumous Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his heroic deeds in saving the lives of others.  In addition to featured guest Major Everett “Bud” Lacroix, U.S. Southern Command, the City of Pembroke Pines Memorial Day Ceremony included a welcome by Mayor Frank C. Ortis and Invocation by PPFD Chaplain Captain Vincent Scardino. The Colors, presented by the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard, were followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Boy Scout Troop 460. The National Anthem sung by Natalie Lang was followed by comments from Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Vice Mayor/World War II Veteran Carl Shechter, Commissioners Angelo Castillo, Iris A. Siple and Jay Schwartz. Taps were played by Josh Simpo and Randy Rosario from Charles W. Flanagan High School and appreciation for supporting the Annual Pembroke Pines Memorial Day Ceremony was expressed by the Pembroke Pines Special Events Department to The Home Depot for plants and patriotic bunting and VITAS Healthcare for refreshments.

West Broward Gets S.A.S.S.Y with Suits, Stilettos and Lipstick Launch Party BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

M

ARCELA OLIVER WAS LOOKING to network. Not just pass out business cards, but to make true, lasting connections with similarly-minded businesswomen around South Florida. So, four years ago, the partner and Director of Communications at Bright Business Solutions set out to her first SSL (Suits, Stilettos and Lipstick) event in Miami. And then she hit traffic. Two hours of it. Not easily discouraged and enthusiastic about the eventual outcome of the Miami event, Oliver turned her attention to the more easily accessible Fort Lauderdale SSL chapter. But, once again, found her plans waylaid by South Florida traffic. So she took matters into her own hands and, this past April, launched the first West Broward outpost of the organization with an event at Segafredo Pembroke Pines in The Shops at Pembroke Gardens. “I fell in love with the SSL community,” says Oliver, who now acts as President of West Broward’s SASSY (Smart, Assertive, Strategic, Selfless and Young at Heart) community. “I was very impressed. It’s hard to find genuine, authentic, nice people these days. They made me feel important; that they wanted me there.” Founded in Fort Lauderdale in 2012 by psychotherapists Dr. Elizabeth King and Yvonne Haase, the organization now boasts five “communities:” four in South Florida and one in Chicago. The women-led (and men-friendly) organization focuses on teaching members how to grow personally, spiritually and professionally, while engaging in networking opportunities. Since its launch, the organization has grown to become a 4,000-strong sisterhood; promoting and supporting professional women, while also supporting local nonprofit organizations through The Lipstick Foundation, SSL’s charity partner. For Oliver, a marketing and communications strategist and consultant, it was the warm and friendly environment that stood out to her, a distinct departure from other networking and business groups she had attended in the past. “The purpose is to make business connections, but not because you’re passing out business cards, it’s because you’re connecting with each other,” she says. “It’s a completely different experience. We end up doing business with each other, but the connections are at a different level.” Even the events (every fourth Thursday of the month from 6 -8 p.m.) are outside the box. Newbies are identified with red leis, signaling other attendees to come speak with them, introduce them around and generally make them feel comfortable. “A lot of people are very shy and don’t know how to network so we literally immediately break the ice,” says Oliver. Her own journey to bring about the West Broward community was years in the making (“I’m kind of stubborn and I don’t take no, I kept saying ‘I don’t want to drive an hour!’”), but this past December Oliver got the go-ahead from King and Haase and set to work putting together a board and planning the April launch event, which drew more than 85 professional and entrepreneurial women along with Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Commissioner Jay Schwartz and Launa Carbonell, representing Broward County District 8 Vice Mayor Barbara Sharief. Oliver hopes to continue to empower and invite more women (and men, known as “SASSY cats”) to future events as the community grows and gives credit to her “amazing” board for helping to streamline the creation process and support her vision. Says Oliver “I kept saying we needed to open a community. I have amazing women in the west Broward area who want this. And now we are doing it, we are making it happen.” For more information on SSL visit suitsstilettosandlipstick.com.

Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

Pool Rules of Summer BY JAKE BELL

YOU’VE NEVER LOST WEIGHT So Quickly, So Safely!™

UMMER HAS ARRIVED AND WITH IT RAGING HEAT FROM MORNing to night. After a long day of fishing, biking, or whatever leisure you like it’s nice to cool off in your pool. But what should you do when you realize the backyard oasis you envisioned is now a green pond? During the summer season your pool can become much more difficult to maintain as a result of the tropical weather. Here are a few steps, straight from the experts, on maintaining your pool and preventing and treating algae. First, pool care experts stress the importance of visiting a local pool store weekly to test your pool water (some pool stores test water for free). You should bring with you to the pool store enough pool water to fill a water bottle. The employee who tests your water should be able to tell you if there are any chemical imbalances that can be corrected. They should test for: »» Chlorine – used to sanitize water and prevent algae growth »» pH – tested to determine if water is acidic, basic, or neutral »» Alkalinity – helps to balance the pH of water »» Calcium – helps keep the finish (floor and walls) from eroding »» Stabilizer – used to protect chlorine from evaporating Pools require weekly maintenance to stay in top shape. Here is a list of things you can do weekly to maintain a sparkling pool: 1. Net any debris off the surface and floor of your pool. 2. Brush the walls and floor of your pool 3. Empty out your skimmer basket and pump basket 4. Clean (cartridge filter) or backwash (sand filter) your filter 5. Float two-to-three stabilized chlorine tablets 6. Add 2.5 gallons of chlorine and let your pump run 24 hours By keeping the chemical balance of your pool water in check and doing weekly maintenance you greatly reduce the chances of algae growth. This time of year, however, even when these steps are followed, it is still possible you may suffer from an algae bloom. This is caused by the warm weather and evaporation, rain and dilution, or even missing a weekly dose of chlorine just one time. The direct sunlight your pool takes in feeds algae through the process of photosynthesis. Rain dilutes chlorine and can even introduce algae into your pool. After a heavy rainfall chlorine should be added to the pool. You should also run the pool pump for the hottest eight hours of the day every day to keep the water from becoming stagnant. Even after taking all these precautions there is still a chance your pool may turn green or yellow. If you do see algae starting to grow don’t be intimidated, follow these steps and your pool should look better within 24 hours: 1. Test the pool water and if needed add acid and/or stabilizer. 2. Brush the spots of your pool where algae is growing. 3. Without a doubt you will be adding 5-20 gallons of chlorine depending on how bad the algae is. 4. Let your pump run 24 hours to allow chlorine to circulate. 5. If the algae isn’t cleared up in 24 hours repeat steps listed above 6. If the pool is cloudy 24 hours later use a water clarifier If you have any questions about maintaining or clearing up a green pool go to your local pool store and ask for advice. Prom Promise BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

T

HE SENIORS AT PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL prepared for prom with a sobering reminder not to drink and drive. A week before prom, members of the graduating class staged the one-act play, “Prom Promise,” to illustrate the devastating impact of drunk driving. The play opened with prom night celebrations, and ended with the flashing lights of paramedics, and a young life lost to a tragic drunk-driving accident. The Trauma Talk cast.

“Prom and graduation are supposed to be times of great celebration, not times of comVinny Scardino a Paramedic with munity trauma,” said Shannon Torres, the Captain the Pembroke Pines Fire Department shares PPCHS 2016 Class Sponsor and Curriculum haunting images of accident scenes. Specialist. The community came out in full force to participate in the ‘trauma talk’. Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and Commissioner Iris Siple joined a trauma surgeon and nurses from Memorial Regional Hospital, along with Pembroke Pines police and paramedics, to underscore the importance of making smart choices. “As school officials, teachers and parents, we cannot reinforce enough to our students the importance of making good decisions,” said Torres. “One bad decision ruins more than one life. We hope Trauma Talk will reverberate in the minds of our students when they are tempted to celebrate beyond the legal age limit of 21.” According to Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), creators of Prom Promise, more than a quarter of students between the ages of 12 and 20 use alcohol and approximately 17 percent have been involved in binge drinking. The trauma team at Memorial Regional Hospital believes trauma talks like “Prom Promise” can dramatically reduce teen injuries and death during prom season. “We want all our students to enjoy a successful and happy life and return for their Pembroke Pines Charter High School Reunions!” said Torres. Trauma Talk was made possible thanks to the support of the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Student Government Association, Al’s Florist, Boyd Panciera Funeral Home, Dori Saves Lives Foundation, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue, Pembroke Pines Police Department, Memorial Regional and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. HELP YAMILA FIGHT HER CANCER MESSAGE FROM 7 PECADOS OWNER Not every business is only about making money. I believe in free economy with social responsibility. Four months ago, I saw a St. Jude Children Hospital advertising on TV about Yamila’s cancer situation and it broke my heart. Something beyond me told me that I needed help this beautiful 10 year old girl. I decided to act on this mission and as of July 1st 2016 will begin at 7 Pecados fund raising activities to collect money to help Yamila fight her aggressive cancer and help the family to provide the proper care infrastructure for her at home. For 4 months I tried to get in contact with Yamila’s family and I am glad to inform you that last May 27 2016 I was able to speak and see Yamila and all her family via Skype. It has been one of the happiest days of my live. My idea is to plan a series of activities at 7 Pecados to raise funds for Yamila and her family for a period of one month. I will personally speak to most of the owners and / or managers of all stores at Pembroke Gardens to sponsor this noble project and why not, maybe we could form a group of business owners to help other children every month from now on. To me this kind of activities make me feel very happy! and I wish we could count on other companies and our restaurant guests to support this and other fund raising activities to help other children. Any fund raising ideas are welcome! On June 20 2016, the following Yamila's history will be published in Miramar • Pembroke Pines City News magazine. Mailed to 20,000 homes in Miramar and Pembroke Pines. Any company or person sponsoring these activities will be named in the magazine. YAMILA’S STORY At 10 years, Yamila has many of the interests of a child of her age: She likes biking, dancing, singing, enjoys life and loves nothing more than smiling. What differentiates Yamila from other children of her age, it is that at the age of three years, she began a fight against cancer. At age 3, Yamila developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Born in Cayey, Puerto Rico, Yamila began her battle against leukemia with chemotherapy that lasted 2 years. After treatment, she was free of cancer for a full year. Unfortunately, Yamila’s battle was not over.

Shortly after she turned 6-years-old, leukemia attacked her life again. Her struggle continued in Puerto Rico with a new treatment that unfortunately did not work. The treatment was repeated a second time with the same results. When all alternatives her parents had available in Puerto Rico were running out and when practically there was nothing more to do in relation to medicine that was available for her, is when they decided to apply a different treatment outside the island. Yamila received a bone marrow transplant, which came from her brother. The transplant worked, and after spending seven months in recovery, returned home. Yamila was free of cancer for the next two and a half years but unfortunately the cancer returned. They had to return back to the hospital to do a second transplant of bone marrow. Last December 2015, Yamila received a second bone marrow transplant at St. Jude Children Hospital without any complications. More than 100 days has passed from this second transplant, Yamila has completely normal blood levels. For the next six months, she must remain under medical observation. Yamila’s struggle does not end here. From now on this beautiful girl will need constant monitoring and observation to ensure that leukemia again does not invade her life. One of the biggest obstacles for a treatment of this type is the high cost, which in most cases is prohibitive. “All treatment is paid for by St. Jude Children Hospital. We never received a medical bill. There have been already two bone marrow transplants. It is something that if we as parents had to pay for this treatment, it is something that neither if we are reborn again and working our whole life could not afford”, Yahaira, the grateful mother said. “It’s hard having to see your daughter go through situations that endanger her lives. It has been seven years struggling with this disease and we have never given up. We have lived moments of anguish, pain and despair but united as a family we have managed to overcome those feelings. The important thing is that we will take Yamila healthy home again. The hardest thing for us right now is to start over again. Every time a set back happens, we have to leave work, home, family and pause our dreams and goals to be with her throughout the process. Now, we will

return home, we have to re-condition her room, an area of study, the house, in short, everything that requires post transplant maintenance. We have spent almost a year out of our home, what was left has deteriorated by time and we do not have the financial resources to start from scratch again. This is our main concern, not being able to meet an adequate health area for Yamila”, said Yahaira. As Yamila, there are thousands and thousands of children battling this disease around the world. A disease that has claimed the lives of many. To help Yamila fight this cancer and help her family financially to properly take care of Yamila, from July 1st 2016 and for a period of one month, 7 Pecados and other companies wanting to sponsor this noble project, will begin to raise funds through different events and activities. Your help is what makes girls like Yamila have a second chance to be children that they so richly deserve. So we invite you to join this fundraising event to be part of Yamila and give her a chance of life.

“Yamila wants to be a singer and dancer, let us help her achieve her dreams”

PASSION&MOTION: WEST SIDE DANCE STUDIO BRINGS WORLD-CLASS TRAINING TO BROWARD

G

rowing up in Broward, West Side Dance Studio owner Jessica Millman found herself traveling south to classes at Miami City Ballet to feed her passion for dance as she advanced through the ballet world. So when she decided to open a studio of her own in 2010, she knew exactly where it should be. “I knew Broward didn’t have anything like what I wanted to create,” says Millman. “I really wanted to bring that level of instruction to the Pembroke Pines area, so when I found a space conveniently located just West of 75 on Pines Blvd, I knew it could serve Miramar, Weston, and all the surrounding cities.” Today, six years later, Millman oversees a sprawling complex of five stateof-the-art studios complete with full time viewing windows, Marley sprung floors and walls of windows in the bright and airy second floor. “I found a space in [Pembroke Pines] and started with two small rooms. This year I expanded to five studios.” But beyond the aesthetics, Millman is most proud of her commitment to bringing world-class instruction to the Broward area via experienced instructors who impart a wealth of knowledge on her students. “Aside from myself, I have a faculty of classically trained teachers and I bring in teachers from Miami City Ballet and other national companies for workshops and classes,” says Millman, who took inspiration from her own training. “Ballet has a lot of different styles and I want my dancers to be comfortable in any style they are presented with. They get a full range of technique.” Students start at the studio as young as three with Creative Movement and continue on through the years with training in ballet, modern, jazz, hip-hop and tap. Those on the more intensive dance track also get encouragement from Millman and her faculty to attend summer intensives at national companies, a push Millman says has paid off. “In just six years I’ve had dancers accepted into Alvin Ailey, the Joffrey

Ballet, Orlando Ballet and dance universities,” she says. West Side Dance Studio also provides a complete ballet intensive, for students who prefer to stay local. In addition to class time, dedicated dancers can audition for the WSDS Company, which gives them an opportunity to perform throughout the community and attend separate rehearsals, giving them a peek at what’s it like inside a true ballet company. “They get both aspects,” she says. “They get the technique in their classes as well as the audition and performance experience.” But everyone’s track at West Side is different. In fact, Millman specifically created a teen program for students who may be starting dance later in childhood and don’t want to be placed in a class with younger children. “I think that dance should be fun for everyone,” she says. "I've taught dancers who began in my teen classes with no previous dance training and gained such a passion for dance, they moved to our intensive track and were accepted into prestigious dance programs." Moving forward, Millman hopes to continue to attract passionate, dedicated dancers and bring a roster of premier instructors to the area. “West Side Dance Studio plans to continue our mission of bringing this community the best instruction and facility, as many performance opportunities as possible, and a workshop series which further inspires our students' passion for dance,” she says. “I got to experience world-class teachers. I'm proud to say I've brought that experience to a Broward dance studio.” West Side Dance Studio offeres classes for Pre-School thru Adult. The studio is located at 15830 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, FL 33027. For more information, please call 954-399-0409, email westsidedancestudio@gmail.com, or visit wsdancestudios.com. ARTS CORNER

Filmed in Broward: Take 2 BY ERIC A ANDO

T

HEY WORK ALL OVER THE GLOBE. THEY’RE included in major film festivals like Sundance, Toronto and SXSW. And, quite possibly, they are your neighbors. Broward County filmmakers are making a splash, not just at our beautiful beaches, but in theatres everywhere. In July, Cinema Paradiso, Fort Lauderdale, will screen more than 15 of those projects — features, documentaries and shorts — made by Broward filmmakers. Filmed in Broward: Take 2 will follow up last year’s successful debut film festival in partnership with the Broward Cultural Division with support from Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Gregory von Hausch, President and CEO of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF), says the festival is “a way to give these filmmakers a curtain call.” Von Hausch admitted that although many local filmmakers work all over the world, they are under-recognized at home. And many have deep roots here. Director Brian Bayerl’s family has resided in the area since the 1940s. Like many South Florida filmmakers he travels widely for work yet his roots remain in the area. “This is where I call home. I just like it here,” says Bayerl, who has two works in the film

festival, the comedic short Slaphappia and the documentary Foster Shock for which he was cameraman. Earlier this year, his documentary short about Andy Warhol premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. Writer and director Joseph Greco attests to the influence of South Florida on his work. “Wherever you’re from always influences you as an artist,” he says, referring to the prominence of ocean scenes in his dramatic feature Canvas. The film portrays the devastating effects of schizophrenia on a family and was shot largely in Hollywood, FL, where Greco grew up. Like Canvas, many of the films have been shot in South Florida. The first shoot of Tom Dowd & the Language of Music, Mark Moormann’s documentary about the celebrated music producer, took place at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. There Moormann interviewed the legendary Ray Charles backstage as he finished performing, beginning a seven-year journey to make the film. Broward filmmakers, such as Shane Eason, galvanize the local indie film scene. A film professor at Florida Atlantic

University in Davie, Eason curates annual film events throughout South Florida such as 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soirée and Flamingo Film Festival. “The local filmmaking scene is small so it’s relatively easy to get things done,” he says. His PAPA chronicles the annual Ernest “Papa” Hemingway Look-Alike Contest in Key West. Not all the filmmakers are industry veterans. Mari Frankel, director of Foster Shock, came to filmmaking a year and a half ago, and only to document the horrific conditions she continually witnesses as a volunteer advocate for abused and neglected children. “You can read about the Florida foster care system in the paper, but you don’t have the same emotional connection as when you get to know a child in the movie,” Frankel says. Her goal, ultimately, is to overhaul the foster care system. FLIFF has long championed the local film scene. Last year, it established the Florida Prize, a $10,000 award made possible by the Knight Foundation, to award a filmmaker who lives and makes films in Florida. “FLIFF is doing the little that we can,” Von Hausch says. One of the few orga-

nizations committed to local filmmaking, FLIFF’s “little” makes great waves, Broward style.

URRICANE SEASON IS upon us again and there is so much that all of us need to keep in mind to ensure the safety of our family and our property. Please take the time to prepare now. South Florida has not experienced a major hurricane since 2005 with Wilma, so residents should be vigilant and not complacent this hurricane season, taking into account all hazardous scenarios. Even though Pembroke Pines is not in a coastal evacuation zone, some residents may still be asked to evacuate. Those living in low-lying areas may be required to evacuate due to flooding; and all residents of mobile homes must evacuate when a storm reaches hurricane status, and possibly even with tropical storm status. Early arrangements should be made for any elderly family member or those with special needs. A two week supply of any needed medications is also recommended. Broward County’s Department of Elderly Services coordinates Special Needs shelters, however, pre-registration is required. In Pembroke Pines, five shelters will be open for those needing to evacuate. The City of Pembroke Pines Emergency Management Team has developed a plan of action that deals with before, during, and after a hurricane or storm. Should the City encounter a direct impact from a hurricane, the goal is to quickly stabilize the situation and provide immediate assistance to residents and businesses. At a recent National Hurricane Conference held in Orlando, the importance of social media’s role in communicating about hurricanes was discussed. The City of Pembroke Pines’ Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines will play a critical role in ensuring that correct and timely information is shared with residents. The City’s website at ppines.com also shares important information about preparation and what to do right before, during and after a storm. I am pleased to share with you that Pooches in Pines, a community group of dedicated volunteers in Pembroke Pines that helps unite dogs found by the Pembroke Pines Police with their owners, is now an official charity of our city. As a co-sponsor, we are excited to begin planning a dinner fundraiser in October 2016 to support this wonderful organization. We also invite everyone to celebrate the 4th of July with us at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds located at 7400 Pines Blvd. The festivities will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission and parking are free at this fun event. There will be the Food Truck Invasion, free rides for children, a children’s area, live musical entertainment by the band Higher Ground, and a spectacular Fireworks Show which begins at 9 p.m. As always, please feel free to contact me at 954-450-1020 or fortis@ppines.com. Again, during this hurricane season, I urge you to not wait for a storm to be upon us - be vigilant and prepare for any hurricane emergencies. And please stay safe this summer. Your Mayor,

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CIT Y OF MIR AMAR

My Fellow Miramar Residents,

I

HOPE YOU’RE HAVING AN AWESOME SUMMER. NOW is that time to switch gears with the kids out of school in camp, playing sports, enjoying family time and perhaps catching up on things you hoped to do during the year but just didn’t get a chance. It’s the same here for us as City employees. We continue to work diligently, ensuring we are focused on all things important to our residents and business owners. Here’s an update: During a recent meeting, the Commission voted unanimously to approve an initiative I sponsored called the P.A.C.E Program for Home and Commercial Wind & Energy Efficient Improvement Financing. P.A.C.E. stands for Property Assessed Clean Energy. Home and business owners are eligible to equip their properties with wind and energy efficient improvements through special financing with approved industry leaders. The programs provide upfront capital to property owners that allows improvements to their properties with refinancing paid through a special, non ad-valorem assessment levied on the property and repaid annually on the property owner’s tax bill. P.A.C.E financing can be repaid without penalty in advance or in increments of five to twenty-five years at the home or business owner’s consent, depending on the lifespan of the improvements made to the property. I will be holding a series of meetings in the community with the approved lenders to put the two groups together. During the meetings, property owners will be able to get a better understanding of who is offering the program, qualifications needed, how to complete the forms and more. website and visit my page at http://www.miramarfl.gov/293/Mayor-Wayne-M-Messam for dates and locations. To help bridge the digital divide, we have developed another partnership program available to Miramar students called Internet Essentials™ from Comcast. This program brings affordable high speed internet to the home at a reduced price if your child is enrolled in a Miramar School and is eligible for the National School Lunch program. Again, I have information on my page on the City’s website with additional details about signing up for this valuable program for your children. When school starts in August, let’s make sure all of our children are ready to kick the new year off with all the tools they need to succeed. On a very high note, we are inviting you to join us on the Fourth of July beginning at 7 p.m. for a celebration that rivals no other at Miramar Regional Park, located at 16801 Miramar Pkwy, Miramar, FL 33027. Our City staff puts together an event second to none in honoring the United States of America and our Independence. Hope to see you there. Have a great summer, see you in the community. Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar

Faith and Action BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

A

RCHBISHOP EDWARD A. MCCARTHY High School is sending thirty seniors to college with a poignant reminder of their extraordinary faith and action during high school – a crucifix for their dorm room wall. “As a faith-based school we impart to our students the importance of taking their education beyond the walls of our school, sharing their faith through continued service to the community,” said Principal Richard P. Jean. “We hope the crucifix will serve as a visual reminder to keep the faith alive in their daily lives as college students.” The students, representing twelve parishes, were honored at an appreciation dinner for their service as Extraordinary Ministers of The Eucharist. As part of this role, they distributed communion to students at all-school masses throughout the year. The Recognition Dinner was held at Anthony’s Runway 84 Restaurant. The students were also commended for their acts of service, a key component of the Roman Catholic school’s mission. “As Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion our students have celebrated and distributed The Living Christ to other Catholics during our all-school masses. They have also shared their faith through their actions, with students of all faiths throughout the school year,”

said Chris Covone, Director of Campus Ministry at Archbishop McCarthy. The students were joined at the dinner by their parents, and Archbishop McCarthy’s Supervising Principal Father Brendon Dalton, School Chaplain Father Jean Jadotte, Chris Covone and Principal Jean. HOA Roundtable Brings Community Cohesion

I

N A N E FFO RT TO BRING TOG E T H E R LOC A L Homeowners Association groups, Miramar Commissioner Yvette Colbourne hosted her second HOA roundtable on June 2. The event, created to allow the groups to share issues and concerns, as well as solutions, was attended by more than 80 participants representing 35 communities and featured presentations on HOA legislative updates by Attorney Anthony Soroka, from Weiss, Serota and Cole, and the City of Miramar Permitting and Inspection Process by Eric Silva, Director of Community and Economic Development Department. Residents shared challenges with Airbnb rentals, lake erosion, nearby blasting and the permitting approval process. “I believe that valuable information was provided, and participants received information that they can share with their residents,” said the Commissioner in a post-event email. “It is important for our volunteer community to feel appreciated for the work that they do. This Roundtable was a great opportunity for me to thank

homeowners groups for volunteering their service to their community, and to provide an relaxed collaborative forum to discuss their issues and concerns.” Commissioner Colbourne says the roundtable series will continue on in the future, during which she hopes to create an ongoing dialogue about issues relating to the Miramar community. “These types of meetings are important because it allows me, as a Miramar Commissioner, to know the issues residents are facing and to be able to include them in the solutions,” she said. In addition to the discussion, participants used the gathering as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Caribbean Heritage month by enjoying a “delicious” Caribbean meal. Roundtable attendees included representatives from Tropical Crime Watch in East Miramar, Calabria, University Park Lake Shore, River Run, Riverdale, Courtyard at Nautica, Riviera Isles, Silver Shores and Harbor Lakes; City residents; the City Manager; the Mayor and City Commissioners; and City executives from various departments.
