Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

F YOU COULD NOT TELL, BY THE ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES outside, summer is definitely here! As much as we love this time of the year it also means that hurricane season has begun. We have been fortunate the last few years and hope that our good luck continues. However, it's extremely important to be informed and prepared, so that we are never caught off guard if a storm comes. For all things hurricane related, don't miss this month's special feature "The A to Z's of Hurricane Season" (page 18). As our kids are already thru half of their summer break, it is interesting to know that our community cares for our little residents with special needs, with a summer camp specially tailored for them. (page 14). Also, be sure to follow the steps for pool safety specially when there are little ones around (page 34) and don't forget to check Mr. Vayani's story on how his Montessori School in Miramar came to be, and his passion for education of our children, who are the future of our society (page 20). As always, be sure to check out our Events Calendar on page 6, for a comprehensive list of happenings around town for big and small. Check our Pet of the Month and also our Arts Corner.

From their halcyon days as America’s sweethearts to their current status as superstars who pioneered a genre, The Go-Go’s helped cement the foundation of the early 80’s punk-pop-rock sound. Their hit singles -- "We Got the Beat," "Our Lips Are Sealed," "Vacation," "Head Over Heels" -- were bright, energetic, and conquered the charts and airwaves. The whole world may have lost its head, but in a world gone crazy, The Go-Go’s still have the beat! BrowardCenter.org

At the April 6, 2016 City Commission Meeting, a motion was passed to appoint Commissioner Carl Shechter as Vice Mayor for 2016- 2017. According to the City’s Code of Ordinances, the Commission elects, by majority vote, the Vice Mayor at the first regulatory scheduled meeting in April of each year. Vice Mayor Shechter was first appointed interim Commissioner from May 2004 to August 2004. He was then elected to a four-year term beginning in 2006, and then re-elected in 2010 and in 2014. He has served three terms as Vice Mayor.
Congratulations to the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award 2016 winners. This Award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident, business woman and nature-lover, who tragically lost her life in July of 2011. Five Pembroke Pines residents were selected. This year the winners are Sheldon and Karen Scott, Eddie Linares, Gerald Nattboy, Joseph Zappia and Mary Foster-Munn.
Several Pembroke Pines Police Officers and Broward County’s law enforcement community hit the pavement with Special Olympics athletes recently for the 33rd annual Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting the Special Olympics. The 29.02 mile Broward Run began at A1A and County Line in Hallandale Beach and ended at the Palm Beach County Line. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the signature event of the law enforcement community’s year-round support for Special Olympics and Special Olympics Florida.

Commitment to Community BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO
NAME:
Polly Wilkie Prestige Club, prestigeclub.org BACKGROUND: As the former Vice President of Community Bank of Broward, longtime Pines resident Polly Wilkie often found herself in a position to take action when underprivileged, ill or abused children came to her attention, so she did something about it. “Whenever anyone needed anything for a child or family they were referred to me at the bank,” says Wilkie, the founder and CEO of Prestige Club. “I decided I could not do it on my own so we started a non-profit.” Aided by fellow founding members e Kitty Thibault, Charlie Dodge, Vicki Minnaugh, and Dennis Giordano, Prestige Club was born. ABOUT PRESTIGE CLUB: Established in 1996, the Club funds activities each month for 150 families in need, working with partners such as Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the Florida Panthers to create memorable outings. In addition, the Club sponsors everything from nutrition classes to tree planting, anti-bullying workshops and support for homeless families. “At one time we had 21 homeless women and 56 kids [in our housing] for almost two years,” says Wilkie. “All of them got better jobs, helped each other or married and moved away. My customer had 10 houses that we fixed up … it was a great time for me to see them grow.” The organization’s newest initiative is bringing the joy of animals to underprivileged schools via 3D books and visits from live animals. “We bring in John The Otter with live owls, falcons, baby alligators and other animals for them to see. Many of these kids have never seen a zoo,” says Wilkie. CONNECTED TO THE COMMUNIT Y: The Club’s membership is limited to 100 corporations and individuals, with members voted in by a 28-seat Board of Directors, but volunteer opportunities are endless. For their largest event (an all-day picnic named the Bart Reed Love Fest Picnic after Wilkie’s son) the week before Thanksgiving, Prestige brings together 21 different agencies including Women in Distress, the Ease Foundation, Hope Outreach and more for a day of food, arts and crafts, characters, games and music. They expect more than 3,500 attendees and are currently recruiting both sponsors and volunteers.

FUTURE PL ANS: Next up for the organization is an August 13th comedy night at the Susan B. Katz Theater of the Performing Arts at the River of Grass ArtsPark. The lineup will feature five comedians, including headliner Carl Guerra.

Pines Offers Special Populations Summer Camp
T
HE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES RECREATION and Cultural Arts Department is once again offering a Special Populations Summer Camp for children and adults ages 6-22 with special needs and varying disabilities. The camp, which takes place at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School, runs from June 13 through August 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with eight one-week sessions. Though the fee is $80 (it includes a t-shirt, lunch and snack), financial assistance is available for those who qualify via The Children’s Service Council MOST (Maximizing Out of School Time) grant. Campers are separated into appropriate age groups and participate in a host of activities including games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, field trips, entertainment and the coveted “Camper of the Week” designation. “Our summer campers all strive to be named ‘Camper of the Week.” This is an honor bestowed upon the camper who demonstrates being helpful, kind, and having a positive attitude,” said Mary Palacios, Special Population Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. An educational component is incorporated into each activity and the campers learn about community service by participating in a summer project. The 2015 Summer Camp community service project was a personal hygiene drive to benefit the Broward Outreach Center for women and children. The City of Pembroke Pines Special Populations program provides a range of recreational and educational opportunities for individuals with special needs, individuals

Pines Students Win Scholastic Art & Writing Awards BY MIA HARRIS
T
HE NONPROFIT ALLIANCE FOR YOUNG ARTISTS & WRITERS IS the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7–12. This year two Pembroke Pines Charter West Middle School students received Honorable Mentions in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards presented by the Alliance. Mariana Colicchio, a seventh grader and Alisa Chavez, an eighth grader were both students in Ms. Lucia Morales’ art class. The titles of their watercolor artworks were “Drowning” and “Love withstands no boundaries.” Ms. Morales, a teaching artist-visual arts instructor for grades six through eight, said she was impressed by the quality of work submitted by her students and the others nationwide. A record-breaking 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted for adjudication at the regional level in the Awards’ 29 categories, which include poetry, photography, sculpture, humor, editorial cartoons, video game design and more.

Sixteen high school seniors received the program’s highest national honor, the Gold Medal Portfolio, which includes a $10,000 scholarship. In total, the Alliance awards more than $250,000 in scholarships annually to top Awards recipients and their educators. The Alliance also partners with art institutes, colleges, and universities to earmark scholarships for college-bound Scholastic Awards recipients. Karina Raimont, a Curriculum Specialist at the Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School West Campus, said the Scholastic Awards look at art work submitted by students demonstrating technical skill, personal voice or vision, and originality. Since the program’s founding in 1923, the Awards have fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students, including renowned alumni who have gone on to become leaders in their fields, including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Philip Pearlstein, and Sylvia Plath. More recently, Stephen King, Richard Linklater, Zac Posen, and Lena Dunham received Scholastic Art & Writing Awards when they were teens. “We are always astonished by the sheer energy and ingenuity of the creative work that students produce, and by their bravery in putting it into the world for feedback from arts professionals,” said Virginia McEnerney, Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit organization that presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. “We hear from alumnae of the program every single day that receiving a Scholastic Award is life-changing, and we are thrilled to give that opportunity to talented students from across the country again this year.” Likely, the most exciting part of the recognition program came June 2nd through the 12th when more than 1,000 of the top Scholastic Art & Writing Awards visual and literary work were displayed to the public at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design at The New School and Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York City. HURRIC ANE SAFET Y

APPRAISAL
FEMA
Don’t wait until the storm is blowing in to take inventory of your personal possessions. Make sure to note brand names and descriptions of items along with an estimated value and date of purchase (look for apps that will help!). Also be sure to create a safe spot for important documents (including insurance policies, medical records and your pet's veterinary records) along with copies that reside outside of your home.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency provides a wealth of information and downloads on their website (fema.gov) while their app allows users to receive weather alerts from NOAA’s National Weather Service, lifesaving safety tips, and provides access to disaster resources should survivors need them.
BOATS According to the experts at Eric’s Outboard Marine the best place for your boat is hauled out and secured on dry land. Boat owners should also always check their insurance policy, make sure the batteries are charged and the bilge pumps functioning. Also, don’t forget to remove all loose items from the boat ( i.e. cushions, fishing rods, coolers and radio equipment).
Historically the peak of our season hits between mid-August and late October and brings with it 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major (Category 3 or above) hurricanes.
Newbie or South Florida veteran, the web is alive and well with a plethora of help for storm prep. Check out FEMA’s website for checklists and preparedness plans, Ppines.com for local information, and sites such as redcross.org and emergency.cdc. gov for up-to-date supply checklists. Want to track a hurricane? Follow the National Hurricane Center at nhc.noaa. gov or head over to Stormpulse.com for live radar and forecast models.
Dubbed “Godzilla” for its ability to hold back hurricanes in the Atlantic, El Nino was declared dead by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center in early June. What does that mean for South Florida? It means all eyes are now on La Nina — which could bring warmer, drier winters and a more comfortable setting for Atlantic storms.

Experts suggest stockpiling at least a three-day supply of all medicines and making sure to have any supplies that family members may need such as hearing aids with extra batteries, walking canes or syringes.
If you’re looking for all your information in one place, head over to broward. org/hurricane. The website features a well of information as well as a downloadable 12-page Hurricane Preparation Guide.
In the event of a storm, experts suggest having a family communication plan in place, which includes making sure everyone has emergency numbers and picking a single family member for everyone to check in with should they be separated. Also important? Try texting rather than calling, texts can often get through easier and won’t tie up phone lines needed by first responders.
Dog get nervous during storms? Try this simple trick: Lightly rub an unscented dryer sheet on their fur to lesson the static electricity and, as a result, calm their nerves.

URRICANE SEASON OLD WIVES TALES We’ve all heard them, but are they true? Well, according to experts a red sky (of the “Red Sky at Night, Sailor's Delight. Red Sky in the Morning, Sailor's Warning.”) can imply moisture in the air; hence stable air coming if seen at night and a rain warning if
seen in the morning. But what about the old Miami favorite of counting the seconds post-lightning strike? Turns out it’s actually close — light travels faster than sound (about a mile per every five seconds).
PETS According to the Humane Society the best way to keep pets happy and safe during a storm is to keep them with you. Be sure they have an up-to-date ID tag with a current cell phone number; close off unsafe nooks or crannies where your pet may want to hide; bring your pet indoors as soon as trouble is on the way; and never let your pet roam free post-storm.
QUESTIONS Riding out a storm with young children can be a stressful experience but there are ways to make it a little bit easier. Experts agree that remaining calm and in-charge during storm prep and the actual storm can ease kids fears. Additionally, they recommend answering kids questions truthfully but without embellishment and encouraging kids to ask questions and discuss what’s going on.
ROOF Don’t neglect your roof when it comes to prep time. Be sure to fix missing or loose shingles to prevent water from leaking into your home as well as remove any and all lawn furniture that could fly up and damage your roof. Also- be sure to trim back trees to a safe distance to reduce the likelihood of them falling onto the roof during a storm.
SHUT IT DOWN Sure we know to shut down appliances during a major storm but what about...um, applications? Make your phone last longer by shutting down all unnecessary apps, and yes, that includes Bluetooth and Wi-FI. You can also turn down the brightness on your screen, turn off all push notifications and send text messages rather than make phone calls.
To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056
TREES When it comes to trees, experts advise that those with a thick canopy should be regularly thinned (though try to not remove more than 25-30 percent). Palms, however, are adapted to wind storms and don’t need hurricane pruning; simply remove coconuts and large palm seeds.
UNDERWATER Think rainfall and floods are the only water too worry about? Think again. Pools need extra care pre-storm as well. Always be sure to remove any pool toys or furniture from the patio, turn off circuit breakers to the pool and shock your pool as your normally would. The one thing to never do? Drain the pool. Pool water provides important weight to hold the sides and bottom of the pool in place and empty pools can experience serious structural damage.
VIDEO Put your cell phone camera to good use by photographing valuables before a storm hits and taking images and video of post-storm damage. Experts advise getting video as soon as the storm passes so that insurance adjusters can see the damage in the correct state.
WINDOWS Many South Florida homes have either upgraded to impact windows, or are in the process of changing over but if you haven’t made the change here are a few ways to protect your home: Shutters are almost the first choice for protecting windows and can be permanently attached to the home, making it easy to either roll them out or put them in place when a storm is imminent. Plywood can be a good option as well but may require at least a weekend of work to measure, cut and pre-install.
X MARKS THE SPOT Head over to Broward.org for a list of evacuation zones and shelters. And remember, just because a home isn’t on the coast doesn’t mean it’s not susceptible to flooding. Poor drainage systems, rapid accumulation of rainfall, and broken water mains can all result in flooding.
YARDWORK Before a hurricane, make sure to walk your yard and remove any loose object including bird feeders, wind chimes, toys and trash cans. Also be sure to harvest any fruits or veggies growing in the yard as they can become dangerous flying objects should high winds hit.
ZIKA With all the new of the Zika virus, mosquitos are an even bigger story than normal this summer. So how to keep them in check? First, stay inside during peak activity time or wear light-colored, loose clothing and insect repellent. Second, remove all standing water including leaky pipes, flower vases, birdbaths, potted plants, trash cans and pet bowls.

The Montessori Difference A MONTESSORI EDUCATION ESTABLISHES the love of learning, which is a foundational component for lifelong learners. What a child learns in their most formative years (2.5 to 5 years of age) has a lasting impact on their social, psychological and academic development. Being blessed with an opportunity to attend a prestigious Montessori School as a young child, Small World Montessori’s Head of School, Ammir Vayani has firsthand knowledge of the impact that a good early education can have. “My Montessori Education has stayed with me until today, it is something you never forget. Walk into a classroom 10, 20 years later and a person can recognize the captivating materials, it is as if you are sent back to your childhood to remember those fun filled days as a Montessori student.” Following in the footsteps of his beloved parents, Mr. Vayani began his career advocating for the education of children coming from low socio-economic means. For the past ten years Mr. Vayani worked diligently assembling a group of wonderful educators most of whom he personally recruited and trained. Mr. Vayani also provided financial assistance for many of these teachers and supported them in earning their Early Childhood Montessori Training Credential (American Montessori Society) from the acclaimed Montessori Teacher Training Institute (MTTI) headed by the Living Legacy Mrs. Beverly McGhee of Alexander Montessori. With these educators in hand, Mr.
Vayani graduated many children who received entrance into top tier charter or magnet elementary schools. The institution’s core belief, “We measure our success by the success of each individual child”, is at the heart of their individualized approach to early care and education. From the institutions physical design, to the recruitment of the staff, and the mandated involvement of the administration with curriculum integrity and quality mark the difference between Small World Montessori (The Montessori School of Miramar) and other Montessori Schools and Early Child Care facilities in the area. Unlike the franchise models which often offer only broad lesson plan systems that are designed in a national setting with the mindset that one size fits all, Small World Montessori’s approach is individual, with specific concentration on the developmental and educational needs of each individual child. Child specific lesson plans that are tracked over the child’s tenure provide specific insight into the educational development of the student. Small World Montessori is a privately held organization founded and operated by career educators. Inspired by the previous Mayor of Miramar, Mr. Vayani established Small World Montessori-Miramar to bring this individualized approach to education to the City of Miramar - his residence for 15 years. Mr. Vayani jubilantly stated that “There is no greater privilege and nothing that can be more joyous than to serve the children of your family and neighbors.”

ARTS CORNER
Cultivating Communities with Arts Education for Lifelong Learning
ARTS CORNER
BY MICHELLE DE C ARION
F
OR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, THE BROWARD CULTURAL Division’s Arts Education Committee has been supporting arts education in Broward County communities in their schools as well as public parks and facilities. The goal of the committee, made up of dedicated art professionals and representatives, is to cultivate and contribute to the health, wellness, and prosperity of Broward communities through lifelong learning in the arts. The committee also celebrates our incredible art teachers, in private, public and charter schools year-round, through the ArtsEd Forever! Program and recognizes them at a culminating event at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Arts Administrator Grace Kewl, who is the staff liaison to the committee for the Cultural Division, and who also leads the arts education and advisory board, believes that investing our time in arts education will ultimately transform our world into a better place. “Arts education isn’t just about art-making for young people,” she said, “it’s about utilizing the arts to access one’s inner creativity, which then enables you to harness your inner power.” Kewl says that statistics show that people’s experiences in the arts have profound effects - whether it’s in schools, homeless shelters, or mental illness facilities. The arts play a significant role in lives, helping people to overcome large obstacles, says Kewl. Darby Hayes, who has been a member of the Arts Education Committee for years and specializes in teaching art integration, has witnessed the incredibly positive effects of art on both youth and adults over the span of her career. She’s noticed a marked increase in not only knowledge and skill level, but also behavioral improvement and an attitude change for the better. “Through their self-expression and their personal creative resources they seem to be tapping into a part of themselves that is beyond the worry-doubt-fear matrix that runs their lives,” Hayes said. “And when they are in a creative flow, they are in touch with their intuitive resources, and reemerge with a piece of themselves that was never expressed before.” Hayes’ observations also show that there is marked improvement not just for a moment, but over time. Sequential workshops in after-school programs or weekend classes build skills that result in long-lasting change, not just in individuals but entire social groups. What is lacking right now is funding. The biggest reason Hayes says she loves being on the arts education committee is because the Cultural Division pays attention to every aspect of the arts community – the artists, the public school system, and the teachers to name a few. She also enjoys making relationships with her peers and contributing her ideas and resources to the collective of individuals. Visit www.broward.org/arts to read more about Arts Education in Broward.

5 QUESTIONS
Steve Clark, General Manager, Pembroke Pines City Center
BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO
WHO ARE YOU LOOKING TO DRAW WITH THE CREATION OF THE CENTER AND WHO DO YOU SEE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF IT’S OFFERINGS?
B
OASTING A 24,000+ SQUARE FOOT GREAT Hall, 12 multi-purpose meeting rooms and more than 35,000 square feet of meeting/exhibition space, the Pembroke Pines City Center will include a new city hall, a 3,000 seat state-of-the-art performance/conference space, a stand alone Commission Chamber, and a two-story contemporary arts center called the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery and Exhibit Hall at City Center (or “The Frank,”) named after Mayor Ortis. In other words…it’s no small project. Overseeing the center will be Steve Clark of SMG, the former General Manager of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and former Operations Director of the Miami Beach Convention Center. We caught up with Clark via email to learn more about the Center, the plans for the future and the challenges that come with such as large project.
WHAT WAS THE CATALYST TO BUILD THE CITY CENTER?
The City Center is part of the City’s Economic Development Plan dating back to discussion in the 1990s. It is in keeping with the city’s vision of a centralized downtown, which enhances the arts, cultural, event and entertainment offerings to the community, while providing city services to the residents.
24
The Center has 35,000 square feet of meeting/exhibition space which will draw local and regional conferences [when it opens in early 2017]. In addition, the center has the capacity to seat more than 3,000 for concerts with state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems. We also have banquet capabilities and seating for up to 1,500 for civic and local events.
Steve Clark, General Manager, Pembroke Pines City Center
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT WHEN IT COME TO THE CENTER’S CREATION?
First, the location is stellar… right in the heart of the community on Pines Blvd. and Palm Avenue. Secondly, the overall flexibility of the space, which allows for 24,000 sq. ft. exhibition floor that can convert to concert seating, meeting space that can accommodate from a small group of ten to up to 3,000, plus banquet space, an 11,000 sq. ft. art gallery, public plaza, and the convenience of City Hall on the upper floors.
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | July 2016
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN OPENING SUCH A LARGE FACILITY?
Community awareness. We are now in the process of getting the word out to the Community that the City Center will be opening soon. The response thus far has been immensely positive from residents, and concert promoters.
WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE CENTER OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
First, we envision a Center that hosts a diversity of entertainment, trade shows, exhibitions, and local and Civic Events which will engage our residents. Secondly, the completion of the overall development, which includes, residences, shops, restaurants, and hotels.

A
UGUST IS ALREADY UPON us, and while the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone still gets a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer during our summer months. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at ppines. com, check our calendars, and visit our Facebook page facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines for exciting events and programs that are planned for the coming months. As you know, August is one of our hottest months of the year, so when I recently saw a story in the news of a man taking a rock and smashing a car window to get a dog out of a hot car I was reminded that we must always be vigilant about pet safety. It still amazes me after all my years in sunny Florida that this is an ongoing problem. Despite warnings every year, pets die after their owners leave them in parked cars that overheat. Within just a few minutes, a car can get extremely hot and deadly. I urge everyone to please, never, ever leave your pet in a parked car, even for a moment. August also means that in a few weeks families will be making the transition from the lazy days of summer to the 2016-2017 school year. It’s a time when parents often breathe a sigh of relief, and students and teachers anticipate new beginnings and new challenges. It’s also a time when motorists should slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. Parents can help by teaching their children safety rules, and supervising young children as they walk or bike to school or as they wait at the school bus stop. And, students should practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. If walking to school, they should learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians, cross at crosswalks, obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and safety patrol instructions. Safety tips can be found on our website, through our social media and our City Connect newspaper. I’d also like to remind all of the talented artists in our community about our 12th Annual Juried Art Competition which is coming up. Applications are now being accepted through September 12, 2016 at 5 pm. Artists 18 and older can obtain information about participating in this exciting competition by visiting ppines.com/studio18. The Art Competition will be judged by members of the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Your Mayor,

FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CIT Y OF MIR AMAR
W
HETHER YOU’RE A RESIDENT OR BUSINESS owner, I know you’ve seen all the construction taking place over the past year in our great City. During the first round of Conversations with the Mayor, one of the most pressing issues the residents wanted to discuss was traffic and construction. As certain phases near conclusion, I want provide you with an update: As part of the 75 Express Lanes project, several improvements will be made at the Miramar Parkway Interchange. The new Miramar Parkway Interchange has been constructed in three phases to minimize traffic impacts to local residents. Phase 3 is currently underway and as part of this final phase, westbound traffic has shifted onto the newly constructed middle bridge section. Crews completed the demolition of the westbound section of the existing bridge and will begin construction of this final section. The final configuration will include three through lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions. In addition, there will be dual left turning lanes from eastbound Miramar Parkway to I-75 northbound. Motorists on westbound Miramar Parkway will have triple left turning lanes to I-75 southbound. The new exit ramps from I-75 to Miramar Parkway will also be signalized. Signalized exit ramps are safer and will help improve traffic operation at the interchange. The Miramar Parkway interchange is anticipated to be completed in early 2017. The new Pembroke Road overpass is expected to be completed this month. It is a collaborative effort between Broward County, FDOT, the City of Miramar and the City of Pembroke Pines. Broward County constructed the approaches to the bridge on both sides of I-75 and FDOT is constructing the bridge structure. The four-lane divided bridge
will include inside and outside shoulders, bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides. The new Pembroke Road I-75 overpass will ease congestion and provide residents another alternative to Miramar Parkway and Pines Boulevard. With the completion of the I-75 Express Lanes, FDOT will provide additional vehicle capacity, resulting in improved operational conditions, more reliable travel times, and reduced user delay. This project will complete another section of the South Florida managed lanes network for all motorists and will improve mobility and relieve congestion. On another note, please log on to the City’s website and visit my page at http:// www.miramarfl.gov/293/Mayor-Wayne-M-Messam There you will find information regarding upcoming dates and locations for the approved P.A.C.E. (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program and Internet Essentials through Comcast that provides wi-fi at reduced costs for those who qualify. Wishing all our students a successful new year as they prepare for the school year. Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar

THE MINDFUL DIVORCÉE
An Inspirational Divorce BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ, DIVORCE COACH
I
N LIFE THERE ARE CHANGES, so instead of wallowing in them choose to embrace those changes. With change comes amazing opportunity; opportunity to grow emotionally, spiritually, physically and to acquire a new perspective. The problem is not the problem but our reaction to our perceived problem. See, lots of times we think we have a problem because of our choice to perceive it as a problem. It’s all about our mindset. One way to get back into the flow of life is to have the mindset, “There’s always a Next, never an Only.” How many times have we said, this is my one and only car, house, job, boyfriend, only to find down the road another car comes along that we like better, has nicer features and suits us better at that time in our lives? So, my point is, just because this relationship/marriage didn’t work out, it doesn’t mean that it’s your Only - there is a Next. Have a “no exception rule.” That means, no matter what happens in your life, your mindset about yourself and your life won’t change. With an “Only” mindset, you view life as if the best has already happened. With a “Next” mentality, you view life with hope and expectation
that the best is yet to come. You have the ability to write a new chapter in your book of life. How exciting! What do you wish for? Strive towards that wish. Keep yourself focused and ask yourself everyday, “Is what I am doing laying the foundation for that wish or tearing it down?” “Am I thinking big or thinking small?” Moving into your next chapter also allows you to unearth your passions. Ask yourself these questions to help you start thinking in that direction but keep in mind the important element here is to answer them not intellectually but from the heart. »» What do I love? »» What things inspire me? »» What must I have in my life for it to be meaningful? »» What are my core passions, values and beliefs? »» When I remember the best/worst time in my life, what passion, value or belief was present or missing? Another thing “yet to come” is a relationship. Ask yourself how are you going to approach this new chapter. What mindset will accompany you? What behavior will you change? What relationship/emotional boundaries will you set? What are the promises you will make to yourself? Here are 5 promises to get you going: »» I will control my situation even if it’s with my mindset.
»» I will not let someone else dictate how I feel about myself. »» I will not compromise my integrity or self worth in order to have a relationship. »» I will not stay in a relationship that doesn’t lift me up and »» I will let that person go and say, “Next.” Debbie Martinez, MA is a certified, mindful life coach specializing in divorce (aka: heartbreak coach). POOL SAFET Y
Pool Rules of Summer BY JAKE BELL
S
UMMER HAS ARRIVED AND WITH IT RAGING HEAT FROM MORNing to night. After a long day of fishing, biking, or whatever leisure you like it’s nice to cool off in your pool. But what should you do when you realize the backyard oasis you envisioned is now a green pond? During the summer season your pool can become much more difficult to maintain as a result of the tropical weather. Here are a few steps, straight from the experts, on maintaining your pool and preventing and treating algae. First, pool care experts stress the importance of visiting a local pool store weekly to test your pool water (some pool stores test water for free). You should bring with you to the pool store enough pool water to fill a water bottle. The employee who tests your water should be able to tell you if there are any chemical imbalances that can be corrected. They should test for: »» Chlorine – used to sanitize water and prevent algae growth »» pH – tested to determine if water is acidic, basic, or neutral »» Alkalinity – helps to balance the pH of water »» Calcium – helps keep the finish (floor and walls) from eroding »» Stabilizer – used to protect chlorine from evaporating Pools require weekly maintenance to stay in top shape. Here is a list of things you can do weekly to maintain a sparkling pool: 1. Net any debris off the surface and floor of your pool. 2. Brush the walls and floor of your pool. 3. Empty out your skimmer basket and pump basket. 4. Clean (cartridge filter) or backwash (sand filter) your filter.
34
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | July 2016
5. Float two-to-three stabilized chlorine tablets. 6. Add 2.5 gallons of chlorine and let your pump run 24 hours. By keeping the chemical balance of your pool water in check and doing weekly maintenance you greatly reduce the chances of algae growth. This time of year, however, even when these steps are followed, it is still possible you may suffer from an algae bloom. This is caused by the warm weather and evaporation, rain and dilution, or even missing a weekly dose of chlorine just one time. The direct sunlight your pool takes in feeds algae through the process of photosynthesis. Rain dilutes chlorine and can even introduce algae into your pool. After a heavy rainfall chlorine should be added to the pool. You should also run the pool pump for the hottest eight hours of the day every day to keep the water from becoming stagnant. Even after taking all these precautions there is still a chance your pool may turn green or yellow. If you do see algae starting to grow don’t be intimidated, follow these steps and your pool should look better within 24 hours: 1. Test the pool water and if needed add acid and/or stabilizer. 2. Brush the spots of your pool where algae is growing. 3. Without a doubt you will be adding 5-20 gallons of chlorine depending on how bad the algae is. 4. Let your pump run 24 hours to allow chlorine to circulate. 5. If the algae isn’t cleared up in 24 hours repeat steps listed above. 6. If the pool is cloudy 24 hours later use a water clarifier. If you have any questions about maintaining or clearing up a green pool go to your local pool store and ask for advice.
