Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE TO BEGIN TRAINING PEDIATRIC RESIDENTS For the second time this year, Memorial Healthcare System has been approved to train physicians within its Graduate Medical Education program, this time in pediatrics. The news means MHS can begin enrolling doctors for residency training that will begin in July 2017. ACGME had previously accredited Memorial’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation program. “This is a huge step

forward in our quest to provide the highest-quality education and practical experience to the next generation of pediatricians,” said Dr. Ronald A. Ford, the pediatric program director. “The physicians we’ll attract will also improve patient access and provide the region with more uniquely skilled professionals.” Memorial is also pursuing accreditation in Internal Medicine and

seeks to add OB/GYN and General Surgery programs in 2019 and Emergency Medicine by 2020. To accommodate the growth of Graduate Medical Education, MHS is investing $20 million in the expansion of facilities, including new construction of a building on the campus of Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines.

ESIDENTS, LONGTIME FRIENDS, DOGS and Pembroke Pines City Officials came to honor retired City Attorney Emeritus Steve Josias at the City of Pembroke Pines - Steven L. Josias Dog and Equestrian Park, Ribbon Cutting and Park Renaming Ceremony, the city’s second dog park, located at 5836 SW 193rd Way. Mayor Frank C. Ortis introduced Josias and his wife Marlene, who flew in for the ceremony minus Tank, their blonde Schipperke. Following brief comments by the

Pembroke Pines Commission, Josias took to the podium to thank the City for the honor and compliment them on continually working to meet the needs of Pembroke Pines residents, citing “today’s ribbon cutting and the repurposing of the Dog Park from its 2007 Equestrian Park status to that of a Dog and Equestrian Park.” "I am honored by my long time association with a City that cares so deeply for all.... even the pets that add so much to our lives” said Josias. Horses are still welcome at the five-acre Steven L. Josias Dog and Equestrian Park, which now offers dog obstacle courses, separate play areas based on dog weight, water bowls and doggy “poo” bags; bathroom facilities and water fountains for their human owners; and ample parking. Gazebos in each area provide shade and seating which complement newly planted live oak trees. Park hours at the Josias Dog Park are Monday through Saturday 8:00 a.m. until dusk and Sunday 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Rules and regulations are posted to the benefit of every visitor, An area of doggy treats set out for small and large dogs and canine guests. their people too.

Park Etiquette is easy to follow and is based on the Golden Rule - treat the park and its guests of dogs and people, as you would like to be treated. In keeping with the dog park spirit of the Golden Rule, bags are conveniently located at the entrance of the park to make “poo” removal convenient for everyone. “The opening of the new Dog Park was timed with the temporary closure, for renovations of the East Dog Park,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “The East Dog Park will be ready well before the October 8, 2016 Fourth Annual Bow Wow Ween Halloween Dog Event.” In the meantime, City officials encourage residents to enjoy the amenities at the Steven L. Josias Dog and Equestrian Park.

Tropical Financial Credit Union Begins Search for an Everyday Local Hero BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

M

IRAMAR-BASED TROPICAL FINANCIAL CREDIT UNION IS IN search of an everyday hero. The not for-profit financial institution is asking for the public’s help in finding someone who has gone above the call of duty to help others with its “Local Hero” contest. “As a credit union, we consider our members to be everyday heroes for pooling their hard-earned money together to help each other financially,” said Rich Helber, CEO/ President of Tropical Financial. “But we know there are other heroes out there who are doing selfless acts to make our communities better places to live and work. We want to know about them and recognize one who is doing something particularly special.” The credit union will present the Local Hero with a $4,500 check and make a $1,000 donation to a charity of their choice and is focusing their search within one of the seven counties it which it conducts business: Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties in southeast Florida, and Collier, Lee and Hendry counties on the west coast of the state. Judges will also choose two runner-ups and make donations to charities of their choice, with winners announced in early October. The public can nominate their hero before August 19 by logging on to SubmitAHero.com. They will be asked to submit a short write-up

on why that person deserves consideration. “The more descriptive and compelling the story, the more likely it is to resonate with the public and judges,” said Helber. Once the nomination period ends, stories will be shared on the website and the public will have between August 19 and 26 to vote for their favorite. The top 10 nominees, based on number of votes, will then be placed in front of a panel of judges who will then select the 2016 Local Hero. The three criteria for judging: the nominee’s impact on the community, number of people impacted by his or her actions and the compelling nature of their story. Last year, Tropical Financial named Elliot Scholes its first ever Local Hero. Scholes, a Miami-Dade police officer, was nominated for his work rescuing German Shepherds as well as his dedication to feeding families at the Ronald McDonald House in Miami.

THE PHIL ANTHROPIST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.

Todd Templin BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

EVP at Broward-based BoardroomPR BACKGROUND Pines resident Templin (a EVP at Browardbased BoardroomPR) found his love of volunteering after moving from a career in television journalism to one in the public relations business 16 years ago. “The job exposed me to some great nonprofits that are working hard on limited budgets,” he says. Since then, Templin has put his skills and network to work for organizations such as Firewall and the American Red Cross-Broward Chapter alongside his family -- his wife and two children are also active volunteers for organizations in South Florida.

‘‘

ABOUT FIREWALL CENTERS Firewall Centers provides daily, schoolbased tutoring and mentoring services. Founded by Andy and Janeth Fernandez, the organization was conceived after the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl who overdosed when left unsupervised during after-school hours. After implementing a weekly program at the mobile home park where the girl lived, the Fernandez’s realized that a daily positive presence was needed and an after-school mentoring and tutoring center was established. “The organization gives at-risk school kids a chance to succeed academically, build character and become servant leaders,” says Templin, who joined the board this year. “It increases the odds they will succeed in life and become productive members of the community.”

A LONG -TERM COMMITTMENT Firewall partners with parents, teachers and school counselors to create a strong support system and staffs their centers with college students who can connect easily to their students. They also commit to the students for the duration of their school career, from sixth grade through high school graduation. “Firewall treats kids like they are part of a family. The kids can feel it,” says Templin. “That is a big part of the group’s success and what makes them different than other afterschool programs.”

FUTURE PL ANS Since 2010, Firewall has grown from one center of 40 students to eight centers serving more than 400 students every day… and they’re not slowing down. “This school year, we will have eight centers and there is a big waiting list,” says Templin. “Corporations should be attracted to our mission because they love metrics and we have the hard data to show what we are doing is working.” A fundraising dinner in early November will draw additional attention (and donations) to the Center, which will be used to expand the program throughout the area. “They have created a great model that I think can be scaled and replicated in other school districts. It’s just a matter of time.”

This year I attended Firewall Centers’ annual Serve-a-thon where all kids in the program volunteer for a day of community service. It was very moving to see 400 young people joining hand-in-hand for a larger purpose instead of indulging their own needs.”

What’s For Lunch?

SOS: Save Your Spine

S

S THE SCHOOL YEAR KICKS OFF THERE’S MORE TO WORRY about than just spelling tests and SAT prep. Lugging books and hunching over a computer for hours on end can do irreparable damage to our spines. So what to do? Awareness is key, says Florida Occupational Healthcare’s Alex Pereda, DPT, MTC. First, look for a rolling backpack as opposed to shoulder harness. (The only exception would be a bag under five pounds for children under 12.) “If a shoulder harness backpack is too heavy this not only loads the spine, but also causes back extension which can lead to severe muscular low back tightness and premature arthritic changes in the facet joints located in the lumbar spine,” says Pereda. When it comes to homework time it’s also important to keep an eye on posture… and it may not be the posture you imagine. “Although most of us have been brought up with the mentality of ‘good’ posture (erect posture), for both sitting and standing, multiple studies have suggested that when sitting for more than 20 minutes it is important to sit in a slouched posture (similar to astronauts sitting position during shuttle takeoff),” says Pereda. Sitting in this position, he explains, significantly decreases the compressive forces acting on the spine and positions the muscles in a semi stretched positions therefore avoiding premature arthritic changes in the facet joints located in the lumbar spine and adaptive forces shortening of the muscles collectively. Regardless, sitting for more than 20 minutes in any position can be damaging, so Pereda advises setting a timer to take 10-minute breaks. Another option is to look into hydraulic computer stations that can be adjusted to fit a standing position, but even then it’s important to keep posture at top of mind. “I would recommend that one leg be put on a stool and the other on the floor to unload the spine and to further decrease any incidents of chronic postural injury,” says Pereda.

CHOOL LUNCHES OFTEN LEAVE MUCH TO BE DESIRED. TAKE the reigns on your kid’s’ lunch by choosing options guaranteed to excite even the pickiest eater.

1. Lose the Juice. Focus on whole fruits instead. Water is best for kids’ hydration! 2. Speaking of fruits...Be fruitful and multiply. Create a fruit salad with at least four different fruits on Sunday nights, store in an airtight container and scoop some every day for lunch. Chop watermelon, mango, grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe for a base and add blueberries and raspberries as a topper. We like to sprinkle some cinnamon on top for an anti-inflammatory kick, and sometimes, we treat ourselves with raisins/nuts/goji berries as well for added texture. Kids will enjoy making fruit kebabs with skewers as well; they love being included. 3. Make it gRAIN. Pre-cook whole grains like quinoa/teff/brown rice/quinoa pasta/amaranth for the week and portion out as the week passes. Don’t forget to add all different types of beans and maybe even some squash for more nutrients and fiber. Sandwiches get boring very fast (or thrown around the lunchroom). 4. Get saucy. Nobody likes a boring salad dressing (olive oil + vinegar… snooze) or sauce (canned tomato sauce… ew). Create your own sauces and dressings for the week using things like avocado oil, mustard, spices, worcestershire sauce, avocado, lemon, ginger, and poppy seeds. Portion into tiny tupperwares and send to school. 5. Glean inspiration from Pinterest, a website that allows you to select your favorite recipes onto your own “boards.” Visit pinterest.com/feedyouressence for fan favorites like zucchini lasagna, beet burgers, sweet potato boats, and more. Make it cute; kids love quinoa butterflies (use a clothespin to separate a plastic baggie of cooked quinoa into “wings” and glue googly eyes onto the clothespin); try “ants on a log” - celery stuffed with natural almond butter, cinnamon, and raisins; make “ladybugs” out of strawberries and grapes; create fruit “donuts” by coring/slicing apples and spreading with Greek yogurt topped with honey, berries, and dark chocolate cacao nibs. The Pinterest world is endless. 6. Can it. Canned fish is great source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and minerals for kids. In fact, canned salmon is one of the greatest sources of Vitamin D around. Use mashed avocado or plain Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise to turn canned fish (or hard-boiled eggs) into a glorious salad spread that kids can use for dipping fresh veggies into. 7. Call in the calcium. Kids need a lot of calcium to build strong bones; pack snacks like unsweetened, unflavored yogurts with fresh fruit, organic string cheeses, kefir, and cottage cheese.

OT ALL BACK-TO-SCHOOL MEANS CARPOOL AND PTA. FOR MANY, August brings the milestone of sending your kids off to college. And with that… dorm shopping. But how to make sure your grad creates a healthy and safe space in their new de facto home? “A college dorm is the perfect breeding ground for dirt, dust, bacteria, germs and other nasties that can make you sick,” says Robin Wilson, an interior designer focused on creating healthy spaces, ambassador for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and author of “Clean Design: Wellness for Your Lifestyle.” “While you can’t always pick the perfect roommate who cleans up after himself, or trade in the 20-year-old mattress that it’s anybody’s guess what’s lurking inside, you can take some steps to protect yourself and your health.” Here are her seven healthy must-haves to help keep your child from getting sick. 1. Hypoallergenic Bedding - This is a no-brainer if you suffer from allergies or asthma, but even if you don’t, hypoallergenic bedding products are a must for living in a college dorm. Hypoallergenic bedding products are available in pillows, comforters, mattress pads, fiber beds and sheets. 2. Toothbrush and Razor Protector - It’s one thing to leave your toothbrush on the counter or your razor in the shower in your own home, but doing that in a dorm where multiple people use the bathroom is a bad idea. If you must though, definitely get a clip-on toothbrush cover or razor protector. Most fit any standard or electric toothbrush and razor, and kill germs for up to three months. No cords or batteries required. 3. Air Purifier with HEPA Filter - Make sure the air in your dorm that you’re breathing in is good for you. An air purifier with a HEPA filter is a must for dorm room living. These are available at most major retailers, and a good model will deliver 99.97 percent efficient air cleaning and filtration, eliminate odors, pollutants and allergens. 4. Disinfecting Wipes - Every college student should have disinfecting wipes in his dorm. A large pack is inexpensive and can last the entire school year, and can be your best line of defense for staying healthy. A good disinfecting wipe kills 99.9 percent of germs, viruses and bacteria, including Staph, E. Coli and Strep. 5. Hand Sanitizer - An inexpensive and great on-the-go product for students to eliminate bacteria in public places, from the dorm room to the classroom and public restrooms, one small squirt will fight germs and keep you healthy. 6. Non-Toxic All-Purpose Cleaners - Many cleaning products are full of dangerous chemicals. Make sure and choose all-purpose green cleaners which are inexpensive and good for disinfecting baths, showers, toilets, sinks, windows, desks, countertops and more. 7. A healthier water bottle - College students are always on the go, and staying hydrated is important to good health and increased energy. Make sure your water bottle is BPA-free and won't leach toxins or funky flavors into your water, juice, smoothie or drink of choice.

NEVER SAY NEVER

N

EUROFIT 360 IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE rehabilitation center. Owner Dr. Guy Romain says that NeuroFit360’s unique brand of tough love is for a very specific client. “We’re not for everyone,” says Dr. Romain, who holds a doctorate in physical therapy. “We’re not a traditional rehab; we’re for people who are really determined.” The self-described “neurological injury recovery and wellness center” located in Pembroke Pines employs highly trained therapists and fills its 3,500-square-feet with advanced equipment and technology. Dr. Romain’s journey began post-graduation, when he found his first job with Miami Jewish Health Systems. Because of his physical strength and size, Romain was assigned many patients that had spinal cord, stroke and traumatic brain injuries. Working with these patients made Dr. Romain realize that in order to see results, he needed to work beyond his schooling and think outside the box. “I started trying some non-traditional rehab ideas,” says Dr. Romain, “Trying to help them sit without support, intense core work… they were loving it, because they felt like they were working. When you tell someone they can’t use certain muscles, they won’t try. I tried to challenge their balance, their core, and their mind.” From there Dr. Romain took his philosophies to Memorial Healthcare, where he found another frustrating trend. He noticed that when neurological patients were being discharged there was no place for them to go. There were outpatient rehab facilities, but no place for anything more intense or advanced than traditional physical therapy. “Everyone comes in with a story and they’ve been told they’ll never do this or can never do

24

that,” says Dr. Romain. “But today we have wheelchair sports, the Olympics, and the adaptive movement. People want to get up and do things; and we’re learning more and more about the body.” Soon, Dr. Romain began researching and visiting centers around the country, including the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, to observe their specialized treatments for those with spinal cord and brain injuries. Realizing there was nothing like it in South Florida, Dr. Romain spent the next five years developing the idea for Neurofit 360. “An average hospital stay is about two weeks to 28 days,” he says. “After that they will discharge the patients; to stay any longer is out-of-pocket and very expensive. The only other option was to go somewhere out of state. We opened this facility so that we could provide a service to a community that really needs it.” “We” encompasses Dr. Romain’s team of four physical therapists, who also work outside the box. “It’s not a traditional experience where you tell the client to do something while you sit back and watch,” says Dr. Romain. “You have to help them through the movements in order for motor learning to happen; you have to be very patient. And you have to be able to motivate your client.” Motivation is a key aspect to Dr. Romain’s work, as “retraining” the brain doesn’t happen overnight and can take months or years for success. To that end, Dr. Romain acknowledges that not everyone has the same desires. For those with spinal cord or neurological issues who want to keep in shape, the center offers an open gym membership with access to wheelchair-accessible workout machines, adaptive fitness equipment, and on site assistance. “I’ve seen the light,” says Dr. Romain, who draws

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | August 2016

clients from around the world to his four-year-old center. “I’ve seen where [hard work] can take people. I always tell patients that it will happen. Something will happen if you keep trying and work hard. There are no magic pills.” Contact NeuroFit 360 for a tour of our facility and free consultation. ARTS CORNER

Spotlight: The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI)

ARTS CORNER

BY ANDRE A RICHARD

M

ENTAL ILLNESS AND THE CREATIVE mind have a long, complex history. Renowned artist Vincent van Gogh, perhaps one of the most known cases in the art world, suffered with mental illness. His battle led him unfortunately, to take his own life. While the connection of mental illness and creativity is still being discovered and understood by scientists; the advent of the two continues to emerge, for better or for worse among artists. South Florida resident Juan Martin has made a career of celebrating the creative impulses and works of such artists. More than two decades ago, Martin left his career in community mental health to launch his nonprofit, the National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI). NAEMI’s mission is dedicated to the discovery, support, promotion, preservation and advocacy of individual artists with mental illness struggles, both locally and across the globe. “Outsider Artists,” generally known as self-taught artists who are institutionalized or psychologically impaired, is a controversial genre up for debate. It does not always entail the aforementioned impairment, but the artists grouped in this category are known collectively for their fierce artistic motivations. “Outsider Artists” simply cannot as believed, sustain a life without creating art. Their overall well-being is dependent upon their art-making. Martin’s bold foray into the art world was spawned during a counseling session a few decades ago. “I was with a patient and I wanted to experiment that day and asked him to paint,” Martin, already an art enthusiast and art collector, recalled. Suddenly, a moment of inspiration struck and he never looked back. He launched his nonprofit, which he runs with a group of volunteers, and found funding support through generous private donations and grant awards, including a recent win from the Broward Cultural Division’s Creative Investment Program, and the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs’ Specific Cultural Project. While NAEMI runs exhibitions throughout the year, Martin affirms that the selection process is discerning. He sifts through one thousand submissions each year to select his participating artists… and has quite the eye for talent. In 2015, Alcantara showed his whimsical take on contemporary culture in NAEMI’s “Outsider Art,” an exhibition held at the Mia Galleries at the Miami International Airport. The artist’s pieces, made from scraps of reclaimed and found materials, catapulted his career, which he now enjoys selling works and exhibiting worldwide. Pop-up art shows are just a piece of the mission. Martin has a show opening this fall in Miami, and plans to showcase in Cuba next year, as well as locally in Miramar. Martin knows to think big. “My biggest goal is to open a museum that is dedicated exclusively to the art of the mentally ill,” he said.

5 QUESTIONS WITH

Sandra Daley-Francois BY ANDRE A C ARNEIRO

N

OT MANY OF US CAN CLAIM TO HAVE been honored with our own day, but for Sandra Daley-Francois it’s all part of the job. Daley-Francois, the sales and marketing director for the currently-inprogress Pembroke Pines City Center, boasts a long history of sales, marketing and business development successes in the tourism industry, one that has seen her work with entities such as the Montego Bay Convention Center and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, where she earned her namesake day (June 20, 2012 to be exact) from the Mayor of Miami-Dade County and members of the Board of County Commissioners. Today, her focus is placed firmly in Pembroke Pines and on the City Center, where she will be responsible for all sales and marketing functions, including product development, website development, content creation, marketing automation, lead generation, and any other sales and marketing-related activities. We spoke with Daley-Francois about the Center, Pines’ future and her family connection to the community.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR CONNECTION TO PEMBROKE PINES AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO TAKE ON THIS ROLE?

My son resided in the area for over 10 years and during

that time we have watched Pembroke Pines grow into a premier neighborhood for families. I welcomed the opportunity to work with my SMG team, to represent the Pembroke Pines City Center and to market it as a "standout facility" in the community, one that will bring families and friends together for entertainment and other events.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT WITH THE PEMBROKE PINES CITY CENTER AND WHY SHOULD RESIDENTS BE EXCITED?

The Pembroke Pines City Center is a game changer for the community. It promises to bring world-class entertainment for the enjoyment of the residents of Pembroke Pines and surrounding communities. It is a venue where events as intimate as 10 persons to as many as 3, 200 persons will be held basically in their own back yard. The PPCC is in “the center of it all” therefore the residents won’t have to travel far to enjoy the events being held

WHO IS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE WHEN IT COMES TO SALES AND MARKETING?

The community, concert promoters, meetings and events planners, sports association, medical associations and schools are some of the target markets. We are currently concentrating on the local and regional markets however,

once we are near completion of the project (which encompasses restaurants, shopping and hotels) we will extend our reach nationally.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO KEEP RESIDENT IN THE LOOP AS THE PROJECT PROGRESSES?

We will continue to keep the community in the loop through strategically placed ads, social media channels and one-on-one meetings. We have joined the Miramar/Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce as they possess a wealth of information and direct connection to the businesses in the area. Through the Chamber's numerous networking events, we are able to reach the community at large and to foster relationships. We are also affiliated with other groups such as Meeting Professionals International and Visit Florida, which places us in front of various potential clients.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE FROM THE COMMUNITY?

The reception has been very positive; the community is anxiously awaiting the opening of the Pembroke Pines City Center!

The soon to be opened Pembroke Pines City Center (PPCC) offers: •

Over 35,000 SF of flexible concert, meeting and event space

More than 24,000 SF Great Hall, with room for approximately 3,200 guests seated for concert, 1,300 classroom style, 1,220 banquet style & 160 exhibits for trade shows.

4,800 plus SF Mezzanine can seat up to 240 guests for banquets.

12 Flexible meeting rooms offer 6,100 SF

Supporting these spaces are the well equipped catering facilities by SAVOR.

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FR ANK C. ORTIS, CIT Y OF PEMBROKE PINES

A

UGUST IS ALREADY UPON us, and while the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone still gets a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer during our summer months. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at ppines. com, check our calendars, and visit our Facebook page at facebook/cityofpembrokepines for exciting events and programs that are planned for the coming months. As you know, August is one of our hottest months of the year, so when I recently saw a story in the news of a man taking a rock and smashing a car window to get a dog out of a hot car I was reminded that we must always be vigilant about pet safety. It still amazes me after all my years in Florida that this is an ongoing problem. Despite warnings every year, pets die after their owners leave them in parked cars that overheat. Within just a few minutes, a car can get extremely hot and deadly. I urge everyone to please, never, ever leave your pet in a parked car, even for a moment. August also means that in a few weeks families will be making the transition from the lazy days of summer to the 2016-2017 school year. It’s a time when parents often breathe a sigh of relief, and students and teachers anticipate new beginnings and new challenges. It’s also a time when motorists should slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. Parents can help by teaching their children safety rules, and supervising young children as they walk or bike to school or as they wait at the school bus stop. And, students should practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. If walking to school, they should learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians, cross at crosswalks, obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and safety patrol instructions. Safety tips can be found on our website, through our social media and our City Connect newspaper. I’d also like to remind all of the talented artists in our community about our 12th Annual Juried Art Competition which is coming up. Applications are now being accepted through September 12, 2016 at 5 pm. Artists 18 and older can obtain information about participating in this exciting competition by visiting ppines.com/studio18. The Art Competition will be judged by members of the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Your Mayor,

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CIT Y OF MIR AMAR

H

OW EXCITING TO BE KICKING OFF A NEW SCHOOL year, focused on the children of our community and getting them ready for their future. The City of Miramar has a number of resources available to enable parents to explore various subjects that might spark a child’s interest in any number of careers. At the end of July, in partnership with Kellstrom Defense and SAFEE Flights, we presented an Aviation Academy for over 100 youth in grades 5 through 12 where the participants actually flew planes and directed air traffic via simulators. This was done at no charge thanks to Kellstrom Defense in Miramar who recognized that we have to get youth interested as soon as possible. What the kids experienced was so much more than seeing a plane take off because the instructors outlined the fact that aviation consists of so much more than flying and landing. The beginning of the school year is also the perfect time to see if your family is eligible for the Mayor's Internet Essentials Program offered by Comcast. High speed home internet is readily available if your child qualifies for the National School Lunch Program. If so, there is also an option for low-cost computer. It’s easy to apply, go to internetEssentials. com or call 1-888-972-5982. We are helping to bridge the internet divide. The Jason Taylor Foundation is continuing the wonderful partnership with the City of Miramar providing help for middle and high school students with academic challenges. This comprehensive program is staffed with a full-time educational director, certified teachers and aides. The focus is on vocabulary, reading, language arts, creative writing, oral reading and math. The Foundation has worked to ensure students have a path to learning that also allows for individual creativity. Their spoken-word programs have

led to award-winning performances by participating students who feel their voices are finally being heard. A number of them have stated that this program has brought them out of their shell, on the road to doing what they love. For additional information, you can call 954 424.0799 or email info@jasontaylorfoundation.com There are other ways to encourage students to come out of their shell. We offer a number of sports activities and programs including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, aquatics, martial arts or track & field. Sports are a great way for youth to bond, learn teamwork and determination. Our Parks and Recreation department can provide you with information about what’s taking place at all of our wonderful locations. Log on to the City’s website at miramarfl.gov to see what is available and what your child may want to pursue. We are also accepting applications for our Youth Advisory Council which encourages active citizenship and community involvement from tomorrow’s public service leaders who are sophomores and juniors in High School. For information and to download the application, go to my page at miramarfl.gov/293/Mayor-Wayne-M-Messam Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar
