E ARE SO GLAD HURRICANE MATTHEW SPARED US, AND WE ARE glad we can go on in our normal day to day lives, with minimal issues. This month, we are very proud of our cover, featuring Barbara Sammarco, she is the type of pharmacist our community needs. Ms. Sammarco performs compounding prescriptions, which is a pharmaceutical art that is almost lost now a day, but today lives on at the Pill Box pharmacy on Pines and 175th. Our own Pembroke Pines Charter School is another jewel in our community and this month they were on “clean up patrol” on some of our beaches, details on page22. The holidays are around the corner and we have some tips on entertainment on page 20, also Miramar city is starting the festivities at the Center City with Boo Ville on October 28, and we are really looking forward to The Nutcracker in December. We have two art segments this month, an art competition and it’s winners and our Art Corner, which demonstrates the talents in our own backyard. Dr. Gutierrez is our featured dental professional on this edition, he is a great addition to our community with a personal feel and great customer service, he is on page 34. Enjoy the beautiful weather!!!!

It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Opens New ER BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
A
VISIT TO JOE DIMAGGIO CHILDREN’S Hospital (JDCH) Emergency Department (ED), home of the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in South Florida, is designed to make it seem like a walk in the park for the youngest of patients and their families whether it’s for a minor injury or critical, life-threatening emergency care. Memorial Healthcare System officials, community members and staff gathered recently to unveil the expansion of the JDCH Emergency Department, which now includes new rooms, additional beds, and a new Short Stop area. The expanded ED department is located at 3501 Johnson Street, Hollywood, FL, within Memorial Regional Hospital. The child-friendly environment features a welcoming, colorful and playful baseballthemed décor to help calm children’s fears and anxieties. A 14-bed expansion opens new doors for the ED by increasing its capacity to 36 beds to better serve the community and the families who trust JDCH in the care of their child. There is an area for quick care known
as “Short Stop” designed to treat minor emergencies and discharge patients in a quick and friendly manner. Another kid-friendly feature is the presence of child life specialists, who are on hand to help ease the fears of young patients and make them feel more comfortable. “The Pediatric Emergency Department at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is a hub for world-class pediatric care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” said Chantal Leconte, FACHE, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer at JDCH. “In the last fiscal year, the department saw approximately 70,000 pediatric visits which speaks to the high quality level of care that our team of experts provides to our youngest of patients and families.” The multidisciplinary team of experts at JDCH is composed of experienced, boardcertified pediatric emergency medicine physicians, specialty- trained pediatric nurses and respiratory therapists certified in pediatric emergency care and a comprehensive array of top caliber subspecialists.

EMBRACE THE BEGINNING OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH TIPS, TRICKS AND TRENDS FROM SOUTH FLORIDA EXPERTS.
FOOD
DRINKS & DÉCOR
Regional Executive Chef for STARR Catering Group Aaron Janus knows how to please a crowd, having worked at legendary Miami venues such as the Versace Mansion, Barton G. and Mar-A-Lago. Today he oversees events for the famed catering group, working with venues including the Perez Art Museum and Ice Palace Film Studios. Here are his picks for the food of the season…
To create a truly memorable event it’s all about the combination of food and atmosphere and this year it’s all about bold décor and bold cocktails. Here’s what’s on tap for holiday 2016 according to STARR Catering Sales Manager Tatiana Cardenas.
DÉCOR AND TABLESCAPES
ROASTED VEGETABLE DISPLAY
SWEET POTATO JAM “I love to use sweet potato Jam during the holiday season,” says the Chef. “It is easily found in your local supermarket and pairs great with a variety of flavors, creating a perfect salty/sweet combo that everyone loves.” His ideas are as simple as adding it to a cheese display (he suggests manchego) or combining it with freshly sliced Granny Smith apples, goat cheese and peppery greens and topping it off with a light lemon vinaigrette. “For a creative take on the traditional pecan pie, add some slices of Sweet potato jam as the bottom layer before adding your pecans and bake until it’s golden and bubbly,” he says.
CARROTS Janus also suggest carrots as a “great seasonal ingredient.” Janus likes to use candied baby carrots with orange, mint and sesame seeds as a healthy party snack or roast them with fresh figs, gorgonzola Dulce and brown butter hazelnuts, to make a great, flavorful fall salad. “For a new take on a classic drink, serve guests carrot juice and rum eggnog,” he suggests. “The idea comes from a Jamaican drink made with carrot juice, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, nutmeg and sugar.” For a more family-friendly beverage try a carrot and pineapple smoothie with a touch of ginger to make a healthier drink that is “full of vitamin K and Vitamin C.”

Metallic geometric shapes are really in and easy to find at your nearest home store. Integrate these fun shapes and other metallic architectural pieces into your traditional garlands and berries for an updated look to the classics. For cocktail/food displays, let the food shine! Use vibrant and interesting shaped foods such as pomegranates as your décor elements.
“Rather than creating the boring grilled veggie platter that’s been around for 50 years, the modern idea is to create a display of individual platters of roasted veggies that pair with their own garnish,” Janus says. Examples? Moroccan Spiced Cauliflower with goat cheese cream, Zaatar spice pesto and fresh herbs like parsley and cilantro; Port wine and citrus roasted beets with candied almonds and Maytag blue cheese topped with fresh citrus zest; or Jumbo asparagus combined with a light lemon vinaigrette, Hollandaise sauce and fresh cracked black pepper.
BRUSSEL SPROUTS CUPS For a fun take on veggies Janus uses the brussels sprout leaves as cups for passed hors d’oeuvres. “First, wash and rinse the sprout and cut just enough of the bottom off to peel the leaves away,” he says. “Continue to cut and peel until you’ve reached the core. Bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the leaves just till the green is nice and vibrant. Place the leaves ice bath to stop the cooking and drain on a kitchen towel. Now you have a perfect little cup/bowl to hold your favorite party food.
RACLETTE CHEESE According to the Chef, “Adding a unique cheese to your party can add a new level of sophistication.” His suggestions? Melted as a side of cheese for dipping; paired with your favorite bread and charcuterie; served on roasted potatoes and onions; or added among other cheeses and paired with white wine.
Tired of the same old? Here are some new and exciting ideas for adding a little something extra to your party.

BOLD COCKTAILS Use mini spray bottles to give your glasses a spritz before you pour your cocktail. Try orange bitters for an old fashioned or St. Germain for your Prosecco. Want to take it to the next level? Try an absinthe wash on a chilled glass before straining your cocktail in. Garnishes – let your guests top it off themselves with a garnish station. Try blood orange twists, fresh thyme or edible lavender. Add an egg to it! Yes, we’re serious… Pisco Sours and Whiskey Sours are back and they’re delicious! Add one egg white to the rest of your cocktail ingredients – shake without ice (dry shake) for 30 seconds, add ice and vigorously shake for another 30 seconds. Pour in a coupe and watch the egg white become a frothy topping to your cocktail!
SENOR POP This Brickell-based startup is taking the michelada to new heights with their custom blends of fruit and spices… in popsicle form. Toss the wine and try a beer station where guests can top off their brew with one of Senor Pop’s four signature (mustache-shaped) paletas to create their own cocktail. senorpop.com

HIPPOPS
DREAM DINNERS
Another new take on the ice cream truck, the HipPOPs truck and catering team creates gelato, sorbet and frozen yogurt flavors that guests can then dip in milk, dark or white chocolate and top with everything from crushed pecans and pretzels to shredded coconut and rainbow sprinkles. hippops.com
They may not be new, but this local favorite is a great option for bringing together friends and family for a two-hour private session on meal prep and planning. Plus, what better way to beat holiday stress than with a post-work/school/activities ready-to-go dinner option?

Pines Charter School Beach Patrol Cleans-Up Nearly 400 Pounds of Litter BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
S
TUDENTS FROM THE PEMBROKE PINES Charter School East Elementary Campus Beach Patrol Club assisted in The Ocean Conservancy 31st Annual the International Coastal Clean-up at Hollywood Beach North Park, where they picked up nearly four hundred pounds of litter; the the fourteenth year in a row the East Campus has had a Beach Patrol volunteering at Hollywood North Beach Park at Sheridan Street and A1A. “Our students learn about the negative impact litter has on the environment and health in science class. They want to help the earth for the benefit of animals and people, so they volunteer to make a difference,” said Lisa Dizengoff, Science Facilitator at the East Campus. On September 17 the East Campus Beach Patrol lathered on sunscreen, donned hats, gloves and as an extra safety precaution applied mosquito repellent on top of their sunscreen, before they began the clean-up. Combing the sands of North Park Beach, the Beach Patrol picked up debris and placed it into garbage bags for proper disposal. “Our students were surprised by the amount of litter they picked up, and shocked to learn the amount they picked up is about the same as the prior year,” said Dizengoff. “The event is always a lot of fun, and we love participating, but we all agreed it would be much better if people who visited our beaches would be more careful and use the garbage cans.” The Pembroke Pines Charter School East Campus Beach Patrol is comprised of students, faculty, families, and alumni. This year the East Campus was joined by friends and faculty from the Central Campus. “We had a great turn out 250 people participated in the 2016 Coastal Clean Up. Our students left the beach knowing they helped make the ocean and coastline a little better for marine life and people,” said Dizengoff.

Students Raise Their Journalism Game BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
a member of the PPCHS Hall of Fame, former host of 790AM The Ticket, and former Voice of the University of Miami Basketball; Author Ethan Skolnick, who writes books about youth and maturity, along with covering the Miami Heat for The Herald and hosting “The Ethan Skolnick Show” on 790AM The Ticket; and children’s book author Jonathan Rosen, whose comedic novel, “Night of the Living Cuddle Bunnies” will debut in 2017. “I really feel the students got a lot out of the summit,” said Fagen. “One of the things I asked the panel was to tell the students what they wish they knew in high school. Some answers from the panel included: Be open to trying new things in journalism, always be available to cover an event, keep chasing your dream and listen to people in the field with a lot of experienced." Following the Summit, Bruce Silverman, of "Silverman on Sports" and voice of Miami FC soccer said the panel was very experienced fed off each other. “I like what Jonathan (Rosen) and Ethan (Skolnick) had to say about perseverance,” he said. “ It's so important not just in journalism, but for the students who have goals of breaking into this business."
T
HE “RAISE YOUR GAME JOURNALISM Summit” at Pembroke Pines Charter High School provided students the opportunity to meet, learn from and ask questions of four professionals involved in community based journalism and sports media. Approximately 100 students from the Yearbook, Newspaper, Digital Publishing and Journalism classes attended the event, organized by Faran Fagen, a 13-year teacher of Newspaper/ Yearbook Adviser/Department Chair Electives at Pembroke Pines Charter High School. Panelists shared their firsthand knowledge about the nature of the business, writing and working in the media. Students were also exposed to a “day in the life” as a journalist in the field, facing the reality of deadlines in a 24-hour news cycle, dealing with the politics of the business and how to handle career trials and triumphs. In a Town Hall=style meeting held the school’s library students heard from: Bruce Silverman who hosts Silverman on Sports radio show, is the voice of Miami FC soccer and has twenty years in the yearbook business with Herff-Jones; PPCHS Alumnus Chris Wittyingham of CBS Sportsline,

FEATURE
LOOKING TO THE PAST FOR A NEW KIND OF PHARMACY BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
W
ITH MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF experience as a pharmacist in South Florida, Barbara Sammarco has seen the industry evolve and had a specific vision of what a pharmacy should be. In fact, for Barbara and her husband, Chad, it was the Pill Box Pharmacy concept that inspired them… even before their names were attached. “I knew Steve Pressman, who opened the original Pill Box 35 years ago,” says Barbara, who worked at a pharmacy down the street from Pressman. “Years ago, pharmacists used to be more casual. Everyone would talk... so that we got to know each other as community pharmacists. I loved the Pill Box concept, the independent pharmacy.” So it was fate when Barbara, having left her position at a major retail pharmacy, gave Pressman a call. The rest is history. Today, the Sammarco’s are proud owners of Pill Box’s fourth location, putting into action the “old-fashioned” values and business ideals that they had admired. “I’ve been in this area so long, and dealt with so many of the same people, that they’ve followed me over to Pill Box, which is so nice,” says Barbara, who partnered with Pressman in 2013. Customer loyalty is no surprise for the Sammarcos, who make community health not just a profession, but a family mission. Chad, a Pines firefighter and paramedic, brings his own expertise to the pharmacy on his days off, lending a hand in the store’s medical supply area and working with customers on their health issues. “Chad is a registered paramedic, so if someone comes in with wound care questions [he can help them,]” says Barbara, who employs two other paramedics in the medical department. “It’s nice to have both sides of the business

covered. People can feel comfortable asking medical questions because they’re paramedics. That’s nice, you don’t see this that much.” Another unique aspect to Pill Box is the attention customers receive from Barbara herself. Being an independent pharmacy lends itself to more one-on-one time between patient and pharmacist says Barbara, who is clear that patients can get ahold of her personally (“not a pharmacist in another state”) if they have questions or concerns. “There are errors left and right [in the pharmacy business]… but being that I know what these customers are taking and whether they have allergies, it’s another safety check when they come in. My patients can be confident that I’ll watch out for them,” she says. Personal attention is also a factor in Pill Box’s ability to compound—or make a medication catered to a specific patient… even the most non-traditional. “We will formulate a suppository for a child if they can’t take liquid,” she explains. “With veterinary medicine we can give them a choice between beef and chicken flavor, which the dog will like a lot better than plain unflavored medicine.” Pill Box also offers bioidentical hormones for both men and

women in their compounding lab, says Barbara, catering to specific doctors’ prescriptions “There’s not a lot of people who do that. That’s old-fashioned pharmacy.” But not everything about Pill Box is old-fashioned. In fact, the pharmacy is proud to offer a large section of vitamins and homeopathic medications; so much so that Barbara often finds patients forgoing big-box retailers to seek out the high-quality names they carry. And it doesn’t end there. Pill Box also offers customers nebulizers, compression stockings and more, as well as the option to rent everything from hospital beds to lift chairs. That dedication to selection and personalized problem solving always goes back to the Sammarco’s one clear mission: customer service. “Knowing your customer and providing valuable information is so important,” says Barbara. “We like helping people and together, we really do a good job. ARTS CORNER
Building Bridges and Art
ARTS CORNER
BY MONIQUE MCINTOSH
I
N A LIVELY TALE OF TWO CITIES, LOCAL ARTISTS MADE a colorful mark at the grand opening of the Pembroke Road/I-75 overpass bridge on a recent Saturday in September, officially uniting the cities of Miramar and Pembroke Pines. Commemorating the symbolic union, local officials and residents gathered for a morning of festivities, injected with a lively infusion of South Florida artistry by chalk artist Carrie Bennett and Pan Paradise band leader, Dexter Browne. The infrastructure project, years in the making thanks to county and city leadership and in partnership with Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), finally came to fruition Saturday morning as an upbeat occasion for the community, said Miramar resident and Broward County Vice Mayor Barbara Sharief. Honoring the creative collaboration required to bring the project to reality, Sharief said the event sought to highlight local artists and their own cultural bridge-building, with both Bennett and Brown selected equally for their community leadership and creative talent. “Art and culture are so important to Broward County, and [we] wanted the first touch of color to come from gifted hands,” she said. Prior to the ribbon cutting, the new overpass saw its first traffic on foot and bicycle, as local residents turned out to participate in the inaugural 5K charity walk/run and bike marathons, raising funds for the local Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. Participants were cheered on to the finish line by the steel pan stylings of Browne, who performed pop classics and calypso melodies. The cheerful island harmonies proved ceremoniously in-tune with the diverse communities of both cities, says Vice Mayor Sharief, honoring “the rich Caribbean culture Broward has in that area.” Contributing his music to the momentous event was also a special treat for Browne. “The bridge marks a joining of two cities, and I’ve found that music can always bridge the gap too,” said the musician, who spent years teaching steel pan performance to local teens at schools and churches across the county, and led teams to wins at two state championships. “Music is a universal language, something that everyone can understand.” Ultimately, the bridge “is dedicated to our children,” says Sharief, and the community’s children certainly formed the heart of the celebrations. The day’s youthful spirit inspired Bennett as both an artist and arts educator, as she brought her signature illustrations to the event with live, interactive demonstrations. “I was asked to create a piece that represented the cities coming together,” says Bennett, who opted for a bird of flight that she saw as “embodying the cities both in motion and construction together.” Bennett’s abstract bird of flight design was specifically crafted for everyone to join in the fun, as families crossing the bridge were eager to participate by adding to the bird’s triangular plumes, particularly for the walk’s youngest participants. “My favorite part of the day was seeing the children so engaged and excited in the drawing,” said Bennett. “Chalk is like magnets for kids, and I was so impressed to see them create with color so beautifully.” The tropical chalk art and Soca songs may have long been gone by Monday, as the first round of drivers officially christened the new road, but for those making those last few strides to the finish line, or scratching at the fresh asphalt with neon chalk that day, the overpass proved far more than a means to an end, and instead the imaginative promise of two cities blossoming. Monique McIntosh is a writer and cultural journalist working with the Broward Arts Journalism Alliance (BAJA) program through Broward Cultural Division. 28

5 QUESTIONS WITH…
Faryal Ali of Beautiful Windows BY ANDREA CARNIERO
A
FTER ALMOST TWO DECADES IN HER BUSIness, Faryal Ali is still passionate about one thing: window treatments. “We carved out a niche because we are not just people selling blinds,” says Ali. “We understand your problem and we offer solutions. We are passionate about our clients' interiors because their living spaces impact on their happiness.” Focusing on residential, commercial, hospitality and yacht design, Ali and her team bring more than 40 years of experience working with homeowners, professional designers and contractors and offer clients everything from rugs and wallpaper to upholstery and artwork in addition to window treatments. We spoke to Ali about problem solving, customer trends and the challenges of sunny South Florida.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
We love finding solutions for clients. Bring us your problem windows and guaranteed we will find an application for you. Design is our background and we noted that there was a need for an outstanding one-stop shopping source, where clients can receive unparalleled service. Other vendors, lacking both experience and knowledge failed to address this need. It was tough to find a one-stop design shop that offered affordable solutions for windows, rugs, upholstery, walls and bedding. So we closed that gap with Beautiful Windows. Decorating is a positive experience and we enjoy being part of that process with our clients.
WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR UNDERSTANDING EACH CUSTOMER AND THEIR SPECIFIC TASTE/SPACE?
Experience in the field is key. The client's wish list is most important. As the expert you analyze what your client would like and match it with his lifestyle and budget to get the perfect combination. We don't rush or pressure our clients. The client is King at Beautiful Windows and we respect them. 30
WHAT ARE SOME UNIQUE NEEDS WHEN IT COMES TO SOUTH FLORIDA?
To capture the glorious sunshine, we have very wide and tall windows. Faryal Ali 20-foot high windows are the norm for us. We do work out on the beach where the high rises have floorto-ceiling, wall-to-wall glass. Clients have gorgeous views of the water or golf courses and they want to enjoy the views, but at the same time they are looking for protection from the sun and heat. We can supply XXXL blinds, shades and draperies that address all of those issues. Clients are also looking for products that offer UV protection for their valuable artwork and interiors.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AS FAR AS PRODUCT INNOVATION?

We can glaze them, create a distressed look and so much more. Shutters for the first time have been elevated to the ranks of fine furniture for your windows. We love the shades like the Pirouette and Silhouettes that offer
dual function; you leave them down but you can still see out. Hit the button and they close to the perfect setting for privacy control.

that are uncluttered, with texture, function and energy efficiency being key. Clients are looking for real value and that is why Hunter Douglas blinds are a great choice. Hunter Douglas offers a top product with a wide range of price points. There is a quality product for everyone. We see the neutral color palette staying for a while. The pop of color comes in the form of accessories but the big-ticket items, like furniture and window coverings, stay neutral.

ENERAL ELECTION DAY IS JUST ONE MONTH AWAY on November 8, 2016. Please note that the last day to register to vote is October 11, 2016 and that early voting will start on October 29, 2016. Pembroke Pines election precincts will be active on Election Day so be sure to check your voter registration card for your precinct number. I encourage all residents to stay informed. In addition to office positions, this November’s ballot will also include two questions that both relate to a proposed one percent sales surtax. One of these is for funding countywide transportation projects, while the other is for city infrastructure improvement projects. Pembroke Pines wants you to be informed about projects that affect you involving the construction and improvement of public buildings, facilities and roads, transportation projects, pedestrian safety projects, purchase of equipment and public safety vehicles and recreation/conservation land acquisition funded by levying a 30-year, 0.5 percent sales surtax, paid by residents and visitors, with all proceeds held in trust. For more information on these ballot questions, please visit APennyAtWork.com. For more information about general voting procedures, please visit the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website at browardsoe.org. I am also thrilled to announce that the Pooches in Pines First Annual Fur Ball is being held on Saturday, October 22, 2016, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Pembroke Lakes Golf and Racquet Club, 10500 Taft Street. The “Fur Ball” will be the first city run fundraiser for Pooches in Pines, since the Commission passed a motion in August 2016 to make Pooches in Pines an official charity of the City. Pooches in Pines is a non-profit community group of dedicated volunteers in Pembroke Pines that helps unite dogs found by the Pembroke Pines Police with their owners. You won’t want to miss out on this spectacular red carpet event. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there to show support for this worthy cause. For more information or to purchase tickets or be a sponsor, please visit poochesinpines.com and click the “Fur Ball” link. There are many other very exciting events planned this month throughout the City: »» BOO-VILLE is on Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Blvd. This event is $2.00 per person; the ticket gate opens at 4 p.m. »» A Jazz in the Pines Concert is on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at William B. Armstrong Dream Park, 1700 Dykes Road (weather permitting). The admission is free, NO pets please. For more information, please call the Special Events office at 954-392-2116 or visit the City’s website at ppines.com/specialevents . As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com . Your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR
A
S WE BEGIN THE NEW FISCAL YEAR IN MIRAMAR, it’s always a great time to take stock of what we have accomplished, review the past and look forward as we set goals for our great city. One of the best accomplishments this past fiscal year was the opening of the new police headquarters located at Town Center. After 10 years of protecting our residents and businesses from a temporary location, our police department has a state-ofthe-art new home. Another accomplishment is the Adult Day Care Center that is slated for completion this month. Our Social Services department began accepting applications in August for those residents who will benefit from the services in the new facility. One of the best accomplishments by the city is our ability to grow and attract new businesses. Over the past year, over 4 major corporate relocations have come to our city bringing over 100 high paying jobs. Miramar continues to move in the right direction. The Florida League of Cities presented Miramar with the coveted “City Spirit Award” during their annual conference in August at the Diplomat Hotel for our Disco Soup entry in which participants "chop to the beat" to promote awareness about reducing food waste. Held at the city’s Inter-generational Fruit & Vegetable Garden in Historic Miramar, it was a celebration where strangers came together to slice, dice, and boogie, transforming "ugly" or blemished veggies into a deliciously prepared meal. The initiative empowers participants to save money, energy, and our planet while having a lot of fun. Community and Economic Development continues to issue record number of permits as businesses and more residents see the possibilities in our city. We launched Good Morning Miramar with Tamara G., the city’s first live radio show. Download
the TuneIn Radio app in the iTunes or Google Play Stores, search "It's Right Here In Miramar" and click on the icon. The Cultural Center season kicks off at the end of the month with a diverse offering of performances. For property owners needing to make repairs, the P.A.C.E. (Property Assessed Clean Energy) Program in Miramar assists homeowners and businesses to equip their properties with wind and energy efficient improvements through special financing with approved industry leaders. The programs provide upfront capital to owners for improvements to their properties with refinancing paid through a special, non ad-valorem assessment levied on the property and repaid annually on the owner’s tax bill. A number of residents and businesses had been requesting this and we were able to make it happen. There are a number of accomplishments from throughout the various city departments and we will be addressing all at the Annual State of the City being held on October 13th at 6 p.m. We will provide as many updates as possible and we look forward to seeing you there. This is our city and it’s up to all of us to make it the best it can be. Join us. Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor City of Miramar

IT'S THEIR BUSINESS
Comprehensive Dental Care for the Entire Family
BY ANDREA CARNIERO
F
OR THE EMPLOYEES OF PINES PALM DENTAL, working with patients and keeping them healthy comes down to one simple idea: the age-old Golden Rule. “We have as a motto, to see ourselves reflected in our patients,” says Dr. Fernando Gutierrez. “To serve them as we would serve ourselves and give them the attention we would want for ourselves.” Founded in 1982 by Dr. Bert Wattigney, the practice enjoyed a reputation for personalized service and a warm,

friendly atmosphere for more than 30 years. At the end of 2014, Dr. Gutierrez took over the practice, where he has continued to cultivate a family-oriented, patient-focused space. “The patient needs to be treated as a whole, from the health aspect, psychological aspect and social aspect in order to give them ideal service,” says Dr. Gutierrez, who trained in Colombia and Washington state before returning to Miami. “Before offering treatments, the patient needs to be heard, so that we can determine their needs and give them the best treatment possible.” Aiming to see patients through the entirety of their dental needs, from childhood on, Pines Palm Dental places a focus on complete, comprehensive treatment, encouraging patients to avoid dental issues by making a commitment to annual exams. “The situations that can generate dental problems can be solved very effectively and simply if they are diagnosed early,” says Dr. Gutierrez. “We develop whole programs that are affordable to the patients so they can have exams and dental hygiene periodically.” But even routine exams
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | October 2016
can cause anxiety for dental patients, making the need for trust between patient and practitioner even more important. To that end, the Pines Palm team takes great care to create a relaxing, positive experience, keeping patient safety at top-of-mind and offering sedation options for those who may need them. “We are here to solve situations for our patients, not to make things worse,” says Dr. Gutierrez. Additionally, Pines Palm takes advantage of the latest technology in dental care, offering everything from digital X-rays to oral cameras for thorough exams and the highest quality prosthodontic and esthetic lab. Says Dr. Guiterrez, “We’re dedicated to cultivating a practice that is family-oriented and places an emphasis on personalized service, where the main thing is the attention to the patient as a whole.” Pines Palm Dental Care is located at 9964 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines.
