Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

Memorial Healthcare Joins Forces with Uber BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

P

ATIENTS WHO MISS APPOINTMENTS OR HAVE TO RESCHEDULE AT the last minute frequently cite transportation as a factor. Now, a collaboration between Hollywood-based Memorial Healthcare System and Uber aims to change that trend. Through the partnership, a “Ride with Uber” button will be prominently displayed on the Memorial Healthcare System website. Patients will be able to quickly

find out the wait time and approximate cost of an Uber ride and set a ride reminder to automatically notify them before their scheduled appointment. Memorial Healthcare System is a six-hospital network in South Broward County and one of the largest public healthcare systems in the nation. This collaboration will start with a pilot program at one of the System’s hospitals, Memorial Hospital Pembroke. Uber, a technology company evolving the way people move, is available in all parts of South Florida, including the Memorial Hospital Pembroke service area. “Patients expect the same level of seamless integration in health care as they do in other aspects of their everyday life. Memorial Hospital Pembroke is focused on becoming a premier digital healthcare organization. Our partnership with Uber is one of many features of digital technology that we are making available to our patients to help them take care of their health and have a better experience,” said Mark Doyle, Memorial Hospital Pembroke’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is just the beginning.” The collaboration with Uber is the latest way Memorial Healthcare System is making access to care easier. Over the past 20 years, Memorial Healthcare System has increased its number of care access points to six hospitals and many ancillary services throughout South Broward. It’s on track to open three new urgent care centers in 2016. In addition to bricks-and-mortar sites, Memorial Healthcare System also has made a significant commitment to using digital technology to help consumers find physicians and schedule appointments online, as well as a new Telehealth initiative called “MemorialDocNow. com.” “Uber is a reliable option—day and night—regardless of where you need to access care,” said Uber South Florida General Manager Kasra Moshkani. “Our collaboration with Memorial Healthcare System is the first of its kind in South Florida and will help patients better plan their transportation to and from appointments, and ensure they never miss an appointment because they don’t have a ride.”

Employment Expo Targets US Military Veterans

E

SECOND ANNUAL EMPLOYMENT EXPO FOR UNITED STATES MILITARY Veterans was a welcome opportunity for more than 200 Veterans in search of employment opportunities. Forty employers provided information about positions available at their companies, conducted preliminary interviews and accepted resumes at the Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center. “Employers came to our Veterans Employment Expo looking for a few good men and women and left very pleased with the Veteran prospects they met,” said Jay Shechter Director of Community Services and Housing. Through the event the Veterans networked with Veteran friendly employers and took advantage of mini - workshops on resume writing and interviewing techniques. “We feel strongly about letting Veterans know they are appreciated and organizing an opportunity for them to meet local employers

who were prepared to screen and recruit on site is our way of saying thank you for their service,” said Shechter. The Second Annual Veterans Employment Expo is an extension of the City of Pembroke Pines Re-Energize and Re-Connect Initiative whose mission is to provide resources and housing for Veterans at the R & R Village. “Our Veterans Employment Expo goal remains the same, to provide Veterans with opportunities for continued success through meaningful employment in the private sector,” said Shechter. Employers interested in participating in the 2017 Veterans Employment Expo to recruit and screen for potential Veteran employees please contact Silvia A. Aguilar, Community Services Administrator at 954-450-6888 or via email saguilar@ppines.com.

STUDENTS REACH OUT DURING CANCER AWARENESS MONTH The Golden Rule of “Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you” is an important part of any project planned by the Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School East Campus Student Council. The Student Council, wanting to do something special for children with cancer during Children’s Cancer Awareness month and for the patients at the Joe DiMaggio's Pediatric Cancer Center, organized a dress down and baseball hat day with a twist, a BOGO, Buy one GIVE one! Students who donated five dollars received two baseball caps, one to decorate for a sick child and one to take home. Students who purchased the hat wrote a special note to be given with their hat. “We had hoped to donate a minimum of 100 baseball caps for the young patients, and in the end our student council sold enough to donate 200 caps,” said Alina PerrySmith, East Campus Curriculum Specialist. “Our students wanted to do something special for children suffering from cancer and they turned to the Golden Rule for inspiration and showed such empathy in their messages in hopes the child who received their note would feel better.”

ARCHBISHOP NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS Eight students from award winning Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches have earned the title of 2017 National Merit Semifinalists. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of United States high school seniors. Seniors reaching this high academic achievement have an opportunity to compete for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million dollars. The Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program from Archbishop McCarthy High School are: Savannah L. Bergeron, Benjamin P. Brock, Franchesca A. Linares, Gabriel Peiretti, Anthony J. Wells of Plantation, Allison N. Wilbur, Rachel Wisolmerski, and Adrianna M. Zambrano. “We are very proud of these students. To have been named a National Semifinalist means that they missed three questions or less on the qualifying test, which is very impressive,” said Principal Richard P. Jean.

PINES ELEMENTARY RECOGNIZED BY AHA Pembroke Pines Charter West Campus Elementary School has been recognized by the American Heart Association, for placing Third among Broward County Charter Schools, for its “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraising event for the 2015 - 2016 school year. The Pembroke Pines Charter West Campus students raised $9,081 under the direction of Coach Michelle Sand. The Jump Rope for Heart program engages elementary students in the physical activity of jumping rope while raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research and education. During the two-week program students learn about heart disease and stroke related prevention such as heart attack and stroke warning signs, the importance of physical activity, and an anti-tobacco messages. “Our West Campus students and their families have taken the AHA to heart, by participating and generously donating to promote heart health,” said Principal Michael Castellano.

Class of 2017 cast early votes in the Presidential Election

O

NE HUNDRED ELIGIBLE SENIORS from three Broward County High Schools met at Pembroke Pines Charter High School to vote in their first Presidential election during early voting at the Broward County Southwest Regional Library. The All-American event, organized by PCHS Government and Economics and Law Teacher William Quigley, brings new meaning to classroom lectures. “Our students are making and ultimately will live with the history of their vote,” said Quigley. In keeping with a four-year tradition the Pembroke Pines Charter High School seniors were greeted by Pembroke Pines City Officials Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Commissioners Iris Siple, Angelo Castillo and Jay Schwartz, City Manager Charles Dodge and Principal Peter Bayer. PPCHS Class of 2017 First Time Voters. The group was joined by School Board Member Patti Good and Representative Richard Stark for a commemorative photo on the steps of Susan B. Katz Theater of Performing Arts at the River of Grass ArtsPark. Following the photo, the seniors and officials walked across campus to vote with their peers from Flanagan and West Broward High Schools. The PPCHS government classes stress to students the importance one vote can make. “People talk about coming to America to live the American Dream. Well, the dream

only becomes a reality when American citizens are educated on the laws governing our country, live ethically, get involved in their community and vote,” said Quigley. “ In class we teach the importance of due diligence, educate yourself about the issues facing and affecting your city, state and federal government. Do you see action or inaction by elected officials? Make informed decisions and your vote will make the difference. Lastly, but not least we stress respecting opinions of others. No one is right or wrong because of an opinion, we tell our students if you don’t see eye to eye with someone, then agree to disagree, agreeably!” Earlier in the day Pembroke Pines Charter Academic Village Middle school students participated in a mock vote and were addressed by Pembroke Pines City Officials who spoke about the importance of becoming informed about issues, taking responsibility for their community and country through active involvement in the political process and exercising their American right to vote. “Today our middle school students heard directly about the importance of voting and our newly eligible students from the class of 2017 enjoyed a rite of passage when they exercised their right to vote,” said PPCHS Principal Peter Bayer.

Comprehensive Family Care BY ANDREA CARNIERO

S

IMPLICITY, EASE AND COMFORT AREN’T words usually associated with dental visits, but for Broward’s Bella Family Dental, they are words that the doctors and staff take to heart every day. “We know why people don't want to go the dentist and we act on it,” says Dr. Yarimar Ruiz, who leads a team of five doctors she calls her “oral health dream team” at her Pembroke Pines office. For Bella Family Dental that means creating a modern family practice where a relaxing atmosphere, financing options and comprehensive treatment keep patients of all ages coming back for all their dental health needs. Open six days a week, the practice prides itself on being a multi-provider office. That means Bella Family Dental covers everything, including oral surgery, implants, braces, Invisalign, gum treatments, periodontal disease treatment, root canals, crowns, veneers, whitening, bridges and more, all with a great educational turn and the latest techniques in dentistry. They also turn a careful eye to patient finances. “We take all insurance and are one of the few offices in our

20

area that take most PPO and HMO plans,” says Dr. Ruiz, who notes the practice offers complimentary consultations for braces, implants and whitening, among others. “We also offer zero deposit and no interest, in-house financing for braces.” But first, says the team, comes patient care. “We treat all of our patients as VIPs,” says Dr. Ruiz. “We take the time to listen and make sure all patients understand the importance of their oral health and treatment.” Ruiz’s philosophy that “preventative care will save you time and money,” begins with creating an inviting atmosphere for even her youngest patients and their parents. In addition to a designated kids waiting room, the spacious facility was created to allow the entire family to remain together and allow parents to supervise any children’s procedures in comfort. The Bella staff offers a Spanish-fluent staff for easy communication. Dr. Ruiz also turns her attention to the community, participating in major community events such as "National Day of Children's Dental Access" via the ADA, Colgate’s "Give a smile to a child," and several health fairs, including the Pembroke Pines Health Fair held by La Nueva 88.3

FM, for which Dr. Ruiz is a dental spokesperson. “We’re not a dental factory,” she says of her belief in personalized family care. “Many have come to us with a lot of fear and confusion due to expensive treatments, but we’re dedicated to explaining every treatment plan down to the last detail as well as reliable procedures so that everyone can have an excellent oral health.” Bella Family Dental is located at 19551 Sheridan St., Pembroke Pines FL 33332. FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

I

T HAS BEEN ANOTHER WONderful year for all of us in Pembroke Pines, and I want to send seasons greetings to all of the Pembroke Pines residents and businesses that makes this a very special city in which to live and work. May you and your families enjoy the very best of the holiday season. There are many exciting events planned throughout the city during this holiday season including our annual Snowfest, Sundaes with Santa and our Holiday Open House at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. You can find many more activities and information on our website at ppines.com and on our facebook page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines. Just a reminder that shopping during the holiday season can present unique dangers, which is why taking a few preventative measures can help keep the holiday season joyous. The Pembroke Pines Police Department offers these tips to help make everyone more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season: Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member and park near a well-lit area. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry so thieves are not tempted. Do not carry a purse or wallet, if possible. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash but if you do, keep it in your front pocket. Always carry your driver’s license or identification along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use. Notify the credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, please stay alert to your surroundings. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishap. Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, con-artists may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. To end the year on a very positive note, we are all very excited about the opening soon of our Pembroke Pines City Center. We can’t wait to share opening information with you – please keep an eye on our website and social media for announcements. I have great hopes for a new year in which all of our best expectations are met. May it be a safe and joyous holiday season for all of you, with a happy and prosperous New Year! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020 or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR

N

OVEMBER IS THE TIME OF YEAR WE GIVE THANKS for our many blessings throughout the year and the City of Miramar has many reasons for us to give thanks. Just a few years ago, our nation was in the midst of a recession and Miramar was no exception. Foreclosures and many hardships hit some of our friends and neighbors. Today the economic outlook is bright for our city. For the third year in a row, property values are up by 8% and Miramar is rated as the 13th fastest growing economy in the nation by WalletHub.com. In addition, Miramar continues to attract companies to our city that are providing high paying jobs - JL Audio and Ecolab are poised to add over 100 jobs paying an average of $65,000 per year. There is more work to be done on the economic front but Miramar is on the rise and we are much better today than we were just three years ago. Another reason for us to be thankful this year is the successful completion of our LEED Silver Certified Police Headquarters. This facility better equips our police department in keeping our community safe. Our city's most recent accomplishment, for which we give thanks, is the opening of the Pembroke Road Overpass which provides much

anticipated relief to the Miramar Parkway I-75 corridor. Many residents have already mentioned they notice a difference and they enjoy taking the Pembroke Road Overpass as an alternate route. So please pardon our dust as we complete the improvements to the Miramar Parkway I-75 overpass. Now, as we all prepare for the official day of Thanksgiving, we are all looking forward to spending time with family and preparing for the holiday season. I encourage all residents to keep those who may be facing difficult times in our prayers. There are many opportunities to serve at a food pantry, houses of worship and other community efforts to feed the homeless, jobless and sick. I also would like to take this time to thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your mayor. If I can ever be of assistance, I am only a phone call or email away. Miramar is a wonderful city and together, there is nothing our city can't do. We have so much to be proud of and I can't wait to see what the future has in store. Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor City of Miramar

PET HEALTH

Treadmill For Dogs…In Water? BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

N

OWADAYS, THERAPISTS, SPORT COACHES, AND trainers understand the benefits of aquatic therapy for people. The benefits for dogs are also well documented, and are strongly supported by the Canine Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation field of veterinary medicine. For dogs, aquatic therapy refers mainly to therapy in an underwater treadmill (UWTM). This mode of therapy, where the patient enters a huge water tank with a treadmill at the bottom, was first developed for racing horses in the 1970s. It was later introduced as a physical therapy tool for people in the mid 1980s, before finally being developed for dogs at the end of the 1990s. Why is the UWTM such an important tool for canine physical therapy? Therapy in an UWTM allows the performance of exercises for balance and movement safely and pain free; well before the exercises can be attempted on land. For this reason, it is an ideal modality following orthopedic surgery, allowing the dog to return to normal functional mobility early in the post-surgical period. For neurological patients unable to walk, the UWTM therapy reduces the atrophying effects of immobility while facilitating proprioceptive gait training (awareness of one’s limbs in space), speeds gait training and improving the active range of motion of all joints as compared to land exercises.

For arthritic senior pets, the UWTM therapy will improve balance and coordination while strengthening the muscles and enhancing cardio endurance. Athletic dogs will strengthen muscles and improve their muscle and cardiopulmonary endurance, which translates to improved performance in competitions. The UWTM also represents an important part of an effective weight loss program for obese dogs, raising their metabolic rate and improving their ability to burn fat. An advantage of the UWTM therapy is that it gives the therapist the option to change water depth, resistance and speed of the treadmill as needed. These variables allow a consistently progressive physical therapy plan to be implemented. In addition, the warm water temperature offers soothing muscle relaxation. Assistive devices and modalities - such as elastic bands, flippers, tail work, water currents through use of jets, manual therapies and massage, to name a few - are frequently employed while performing therapy in the UWTM.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Basics on the Face and Body Care BY ADRIANA GOMEZ

T

HERE ARE MANY OPTIONS IN TODAY'S MARKET WHEN it comes to taking care of the skin and the body. Because of this, some times it can become confusing to decide the best treatments or product options. When visiting a spa, medical spa or aesthetic center, is very important to get a correct consultation. Customers need to be sure that the professional performing the treatment has the knowledge and the experience required, plus the latest technology. This is the key to success. One can not be without the other one. For the AG Skincare team, it is fundamental to educate patients and customers, giving the correct diagnosis, customizing the treatments based on the patient's needs and suggesting Before the right home care to ensure results. Thanks to the access we have today to the latest technology, we can offer excellent results in body and face treatments us lose inches, improve the appearance of the unwanted cellulite, tone the body, reduce expression lines, facial lifting, hair transplant and more. All this without invasive or expensive surgeries or procedures. One of the most popular treatments these days is laser hair removal. This time of the year we get more and more requests for this treatment. What we look for,is to get rid of the annoying hair on the treated area (lips, chin, full face, bikini line or Brazilian style, legs, back, or even full body). The total treatment takes between six-to-nine sessions and has to be done every four-to-six weeks to achieve great results.

BEFORE

When it comes to body treatments, the combination of different techniques will help patients experience amazing results. Although we know the cellulite will never disappear, we can disguise it and prevent the emergence of more. Lymphatic drainage, endermotherapy, the application of waves such as cavitation, ultrasound or radio frequency and body wraps are some of the techniques that a professional can use to achieve body toning and lost inches. For today's busy women, the Permanent Make Up is the best alternative. There are different techniques to perform this procedure and trained professionals can work on eyebrows, eyeliner and lip liner. The extreme weather and UV exposure in South Florida forces us to include a good skin care product line in our daily beauty routine. We must protect our skin from the harmful UV rays (UVA and UVB). Depending on the SPF and the lifestyle the sun block may need to be reapplied two or After three times a day. To cleanse the skin every night is a must (even if you do not use makeup) in order to keep skin healthy. Based on the skin type, age and lifestyle, a series of four-to-six sessions of a facial treatment has to be performed once or twice a year. To maintain the results, a monthly facial is recommended.

Grants Available for Broward Artists and Arts Organizations BY NANCY KALIKOW MAXWELL

F

OR ONE SEVENTH GRADER, PERFORMING IN THE LION King Junior musical last year before a standing-room-only crowd became one of the proudest moments in her life. This opportunity, made possible through one of Broward Cultural Division’s funding programs, is one of several annual grant programs. Close to 100 grants are awarded each year through nine programs for projects like these that create proud moments in seventh grader’s lives. Designed to promote the development of non-profit cultural organizations, Cultural Division grants are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified individuals artists and arts organizations. The following programs will be accepting applications in the late winter and early spring.

COMMUNITY ARTS EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP (CAEP) PROGRAM

One of the most popular grant programs, this grant offers awards from $2,000 to $7,000 to individual artists and community-based arts educators conducting programs in Broward County. To be eligible, the artist must live in Broward or surrounding counties (Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach, or Martin County). Projects may include performances, exhibitions, arts instruction, arts integration, or arts intervention, among others. Applications will open early in the New Year with a March 1, 2017, deadline. Robin Braun, an artist/educator, was one of the lucky recipients to receive a CAEP grant this year. As Executive Artistic Director of the Inside Out Theatre Company, Braun is using the funds to work with students from the Gulfstream Academy K-8 public school and Hallandale High School to stage the full-length musical, “The Wiz: Raising Up the Arts and Expectations.” Addressing themes of finding strength within and rising above challenging circumstances, this play is especially appropriate for students who have never before been involved in a performing arts production. Many in the audience will also be seeing a production of this type for the first time. “Through this grant, we have increased the production value to bring a quality musical theatre to these Title I schools,” said Braun. Rehearsals for the play begin this fall, with the final performance to be presented for free and open to the public on May 17 at Hallandale High School. Another recipient of a CAEP grant, the Broward County Library, is using grant funds to teach youth services staff how to integrate arts into library programming. Working with Darby Hayes, Arts Train Arts Integration Specialist, the library will sponsor professional development training workshops for staff to learn how to choose, plan, and put together sustainable arts activities. The first workshop was a hands-on session where library staffers learned how to create picture storybooks by producing their own. In future sessions Hayes will explain and model how to hold a story-miming event, telling stories through gestures and a poetry-in-motion session where participants write and present a poem through movement. 30

Treadmill For Dogs… In Water? (Cont.)

Taking a Timeout in Tennessee

Interested? Before considering therapy in an UWTM, your best option is to have your dog evaluated by a licensed veterinarian certified in canine rehabilitation, and with vast experienced in UWTM therapy. This is critical in the case of geriatric dogs, dogs with concurrent medical conditions and simply for peace of mind. A complete medical history that includes medical diagnosis, prescribed medications, supplements, past surgeries, and sports injuries is required. A complete exam from the perspective of a physical therapist is essential. A clinical assessment and a water therapy customized plan will be formulated. Measurable outcome goals will be established. The dog will be reassessed periodically, and the water therapy will be modified according to the dog’s progress until the rehabilitation goals are reached. Each therapeutic program is individualized and cannot be pre-formulated. A maintenance program can be initiated once the water rehabilitation goals have been reached, or as a way of cross training. UWTM is also a valid feline physical therapy modality for cats that are comfortable in water. The properties of water (buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, fluid dynamics and resistance) make UWTM therapy an excellent tool for achieving canine physical therapy goals and maintaining total body fitness. UWTM therapy has been an integral part of our animal physical therapy services for 13 years. We invite you to visit us for a demonstration, or to inquire if your pet might benefit from this modality feel welcome to visit us. O

NE OF LIFE’S GREATEST CHALLENGES IS REALIZING WHEN TO TAKE a time out. My realization came a few weeks ago, when I found myself having a full-blown conversation with my cat… time to get away. I packed a small bag, took the top off my jeep and headed for Knoxville, Tennessee. I knew the ’82 World’s Fair had been held there and it’s home to the University of Tennessee but I was going there to spend time in nature and reconnect with myself. Crossing the Henley Street Bridge into downtown, I was very much aware of the little mountain town feel. I checked into the Holiday Inn World’s Fair Park and trust me, as Robin, director of sales and marketing, said, “This is not your grandpa’s Holiday Inn.” The hotel’s décor was inviting and my room was spacious and extremely pleasant. However, what really made this hotel a place I will definitely recommend was its staff. Chris at the front desk could not have been nicer and more accommodating and Charles, the shuttle driver, entertained me with his personality and stories of Knoxville. On my way to dinner, I was taken with the quaintness of the town. There is Old City with its shops and restaurants and the square downtown is blocked off to make downtown one of the most pedestrian friendly cities I’ve seen. There was a movie playing in the square with people sitting in lawn chairs as the cool night breeze blowing their blankets. I stepped into J.C. Holdway, a restaurant that made me think of a loft in New York. After asking my waiter to tell me his favorite foods, I settled on the chicken wings with Alabama white sauce. All I can say is that had I been with friends, I would have ordered another batch. They were spectacular. I decided to check out the nightlife and found myself noticing people turning down a small alleyway. I peeked around the corner to see them entering a doorway with a red light over it. Making my way across the threshold, I could make out a dimly lit hallway with a gentleman wearing a gold bowtie standing by another door. Believe it or not, I was ushered into a speakeasy. On the other side of the small room was a wall that slid back and forth which would gain you entry into The Oliver Hotel. What a step back into time. The next few days were a whirlwind of fun. I went kayaking with River Sports Outfitters down the river and just soaked in the solitude and the beauty of the riverbanks. I ate lunch at Jackie’s Dream, which is a small restaurant in a neighborhood serving the best soul food I have ever had. Denisha, my waitress, just made the whole experience the best with her singing. I had time for a quick stop at the Botanical Gardens to see their new secret garden before heading to Wine on the Water. Wine on the Water is a yearly event to benefit Cystic Fibrosis and it was wonderful. There were multiple wine and food booths and it appeared the whole community came out to support the cause. As nighttime crept in, the bridge lanterns came on and a paddleboat cruised down the river. Norman Rockwell at his best. I have to say, it’s difficult to pinpoint the best experience in this amazing town but Navitat ranks way up there. Navitat is a zip line adventure park with six stations that start at a huge tree house. Each station gradually increases in tree height and difficulty. At the end of each “adventure” you zip line down. It was the challenge I was looking for. Sadly, I had to say goodbye to Knoxville but as I drove back across the bridge, I waved and thought, “Thanks for the memories.” Debbie Martinez is a Travel Editor for. FINANCIALLY FIT

Avoid the Holidaze Trap: Five Tips to Stay Financially Fit This Season BY DUSTIN JACOBS, BRIGHTSTAR CREDIT UNION

D

URING THE HOLIDAYS IT’S easy to slip into a serene bliss of food, family and flagrant disregard for your finances. Most of us don’t want to worry about the economic repercussions of our holiday spending but with these few tricks you can easily keep your money matters in check and avoid the holiday hangover of overspending. 1. Cut out seemingly insignificant holiday treats, like those $5 Starbucks peppermint mochas in the mornings – your wallet and your waistline will thank you. Think of it as re-allocating your funds. By bypassing just one of those small treats each day, you can save up to $25-$35 a week that could go to your “Holiday Gift” fund. 2. Give yourself the gift of knowledge (financial knowledge that is) by downloading any of the hundreds of free, money-saving apps for your smartphone. There are an enormous amount of apps to choose from that provide guidance in everything from budgeting, to paying bills, to coupon clipping and sale reminders. My personal favorites are Ibotta (that gives you rebates on items

you already purchase regularly like household essentials and allows you to deposit directly to your PayPal account) and Mint (which lets you track your financial activity for all your accounts and notes your spending habits to create a personalized budget). Find one that fits your specific financial situation and give it a go! 3. Buy your gifts in bulk. Just like stocking up on food platters for a holiday party, you can save a lot of time and money by purchasing wholesale goodies for your friends and coworkers. There are tons of thoughtful items that can be bought in large quantities that still have a personal touch, such as wine, stockings, coffee mugs, holiday candles and gift cards. This is an especially great option if you have many extended friends or work acquaintances to shop for. 4. Don’t neglect your portfolio. Invest in seasonal or holiday-driven companies to make the most out of this time of year. Chances are if you’re spending more than usual during the holidays, so is everyone else. Use this to your advantage by buying stocks in companies that are most profitable during the time between Thanksgiving

and New Year’s like airlines including JetBlue, retailers like Target and Amazon, and transportation companies such as UPS and FedEx. Do it before the “January Effect” kicks in and you’ll be ready to ring in the New Year with a champagne toast to a temporary Bull market. 5. Avoid the money-sucking madness of holiday sales. Black Friday sales are actually a black hole in your wallet. Unless you enjoy waking up early, being trampled and buying things you didn’t actually want because of the mob mentality, do your shopping in advance or immediately following those door buster sales. You’ll notice that usually the day-after deals are much more rewarding, especially on Cyber Monday. In addition to a calmer shopping experience, waiting for Black Friday to pass means that whatever wasn’t sold the day-of is immediately discounted at tremendous rates.
