Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

Heart Transplant Team Performs 30th Transplant WESTON TEEN RECEIVES NEW HEART FOR HIS BIRTHDAY
W
HEN IT CAME TIME TO BLOW OUT HIS CANDLES ON HIS 14TH birthday, Estefano had only one wish: a new heart. Later that same evening, the Pediatric Heart Transplant team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital surprised him with a phone call that made his wish come true. They found a heart for him, making the Weston teen the hospital’s 30th heart transplant recipient. He went home last week to enjoy his second chance at life and just in time to enjoy the holidays with his family. “Our 30th heart transplant represents a significant milestone for this program. The fact that Estefano got the call for a new heart on his birthday, just after blowing out his candles and making his birthday wish makes it even more special,” said Frank Scholl, M.D. Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation at JDCH. “We’ve had the opportunity to participate in the lives of 30 transplant families and many more families with children who are affected with cardiomyopathies, heart failure and other cardiac conditions,” said Maryanne R. K. Chrisant, M.D., Director, Pediatric Cardiac Transplant, Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy at JDCH. “We will continue to provide transplant and advanced heart failure services to the needy infants, children and teens of South Florida for many years to come.” The Pediatric Heart Transplant program opened on December 10, Heart surgeon Dr. Frank Scholl performed a heart transplant on Estefano Reano.

2010, when JDCH received approval at the federal level from UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing). The approval of the program was the culmination of years of strategic planning, including the formation of a pediatric cardiac transplant team with the right mix of expertise and compassion. Five days after program approval, the hospital’s first pediatric heart transplant was performed by the expert cardiac transplant team. FORTY EMPLOYERS PARTICIPATE IN THE SECOND ANNUAL UNITED STATES MILITARY VETERANS EMPLOYMENT EXPO The Second Annual Employment Expo for United States Military Veterans was a welcome opportunity for over 200 Veterans in search of employment opportunities. Forty employers provided information about positions available at their companies, conducted preliminary interviews and accepted resumes at the Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center. “Employers came to our Veterans Employment Expo looking for a few good men and women and left very pleased with the Veteran prospects they met,” stated Jay Shechter Director of Community Services and Housing. Through the event the Veterans networked with Veteran friendly employers and took advantage of mini - workshops on resume writing and interviewing techniques. “We feel strongly about letting Veterans know they are appreciated and organizing an opportunity for them to meet local employers who were prepared to screen and recruit on site is our way of saying thank you for their service,” added Shechter.
PEMBROKE PINES FIRE RESCUE PARAMEDICS EARN FIRST PLACE AT INVITATION ONLY A.L.S. COMPETITION The City of Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue ISO Class One Department Paramedics competed in an invitation-only ALS Competition and placed First from a field of twelve teams representing Fire Rescue Departments from throughout the State of Florida. The Pembroke Pines Paramedics competed in a variety of emergency medical scenarios which challenged their Advanced Life Support knowledge and abilities. Each team was dispatched to compete in three back to back emergent scenarios, which had as many as five patients and lasted as long as 12 minutes. “All the patients had critical injuries and illnesses requiring rapid and technical treatment”, stated Captain Scott Gunn. “The patients and scenarios challenged all the competitors. Everyone walked away learning something new.”
STUDENTS CELEBRATE 50 DAYS OF SCHOOL Music from the 1950s greeted students as they arrived to begin their fiftieth day of school at the Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School FSU Campus. The “Dress 50s” day inspired some of the hippest 50s inspired threads we have seen in years,” said teacher Patty Alonso Correa. The day doubled as a fundraiser for the fifth grade class to participate in the “Shake Rattle and Roll Day” in which students donated $1 per top and per bottom. Music was provided courtesy of PTA Parent Rick Raymond. “Our students and staff greased back their hair and dressed the part, some wearing poodle skirts and bobby socks, others dressing as James Dean to celebrate the Fabulous fiftieth day of school,” said Correa. The fundraiser will help fund the 2017 PPCS FSU Elementary - Fifth Grade events.

ALWAYS PLANNED ON STARTING A BUSINESS—BUT I NEVER EXPECTED to begin one at 16. I have been a fierce lover of stories my entire life. For me, literature has always been a method of escape — the very best part of my day. And so, the realization that there are some kids out there missing out on the benefits of reading due to a lack of access or exposure drove me to action. I wanted to do something to help, to make the literature that hooked me on reading in the first place accessible to others. My desire for philanthropic action and love for books inspired me to start One Page Closer (OPC), a nonprofit organization that provides fully stocked bookcases to kids and teens in low-income communities. Originally, it was a small community service project I began at school, but it transformed into a full blown business venture under the mentorship of the NFTE Startup Summer program—a completely life changing and empowering experience. I received an investment grant, business mentorship, invaluable experiences, opportunities to network, and was surrounded by a wonderful support system of individuals who genuinely wished to see me succeed. On November 3 I, along with six other finalists, will be competing in NFTE’s investment Panel for a chance to win up to $10,000 in capital. OPC has distributed more than 400 books and built three libraries that can be found at Breakthrough Miami and the Boys and Girls Club in South Beach. Currently, One Page Closer is working on an eight bookcase project for the Boys and Girls Club. Partnerships include the Miami Book Fair, Albert & Whitman, Entangled Teen, and Macmillan Publishers. My greatest aspiration is to tackle illiteracy on a global scale and ultimately launch the Books for Her campaign, which would target girls education in developing countries. I hope to use technology to fight the lack of access to education and empower girls in the process. Perhaps even eventually build fully equipped libraries in rural communities? One Page Closer, in collaboration with Goose & Gander, recently launched The Empower You Series which seeks to empower high school students to begin their own businesses and inspire them through the experiences of small business owners while collecting books to stock OPC bookcases. As of right now, six libraries need to be completed for the Boys and Girls Club—a task that requires a huge amount of novels. If you have any new/gently used Young Adult, Middle School, or Children’s books that you would like to donate they can be sent to One Page Closer at 4234 SW 152nd ave, Suite 140 Miami, Florida 33185. OPC also has a Wishlist on Amazon.com if you are unsure of what books to send. Donations are greatly appreciated and hugged upon arrival. Monetary donations can be made at onepagecloser.org/donate or at our Go Fund Me Campaign page at gofundme.com/onepagecloser. For more information, please visit onepagecloser.org or follow the story on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @ OnePageCloser. Kaina Lisibach is a senior at John A. OR MOST WOMEN IN SOUTH FLORIDA THE CLOSEST THEY WILL COME to the world of celebrity is a quick trip to a hot new restaurant or even the pages of "US Weekly." Not so anymore. Celebrity stylist and image consultant (and celebrity in his own right) Vicente Martinez has set up shop in Pembroke Pines, looking to bring his brand of VIP experiences to the women of the area. “I’m entering a new time in my life,” says Martinez. “One of many challenges but also of seeing new dreams come true.” For Martinez, making women feel beautiful is a passion. From hair and makeup to choosing the right look for an event, Martinez hopes to make the world of celebrity styling accessible to everyone. “I can help women with everything from a new hair cut to an extreme makeover,” he says. “Especially for the upcoming holiday season, I’m available to make them look like a star for Christmas and New Year celebrations.” Well-known in his homeland of Puerto Rico, Martinez has worked with celebs such as Roselyn Sanchez (who wrote the prologue to Martinez’ latest book, “Vicente”), Adamaris Lopez and Mirla Castellanos, styling them for events as well as helping them hone their day-to-day looks. Martinez has authored five books and has appeared on Don Francisco's "Sabado Gigante," "Al Rojo Vivo," "Primer Impacto," “Marta Susana," and other well-known Latin shows. He is known internationally for his "Make up for

the Heart" seminars, in which he uses physical beauty as an analogy for inner beauty. Martinez prides himself on looking at the person as whole, rather than at what’s trendy at the moment. “The first thing to keep in mind is that hair is not an island, it is not alone in an ocean but is complemented by the body,” he says. “Therefore it is necessary to take into consideration not only the cut, the hairstyle and the color but also the stature, skin color, body type, texture and thickness of hair. In addition, I always think about personality and how easy it will be for the person to maintain the look on a daily basis.” And though he has collaborated with big names such as Estee Lauder, Tresemme and Wella, it is his own product line that now keeps him busy innovating. “One of my new projects is Vixente by Vicente Martinez, my new line for hair” he says. “I’m especially proud of the Hair Polishers and a Leave -In Conditioner.” For now, Martinez plans to focus on his on-air beauty segments on La Nueva 88.3 FM (one in the morning and one in the evening) as well as on his new clientele. “I want to give everyone access to the celebrity experience,” he says. “Everyone should be able to feel their best, to feel beautiful.” Vixenté by Vicente Martinez is locat at 674 N. University Dr. Suite 16, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Please call (305) 767-0885 for more information or to make an appointment.

APPY NEW YEAR! WITH each new year we have the opportunity to start fresh, look at life differently and begin new paths in life. This year I would like us all to focus on Kindness and Compassion throughout the City of Pembroke Pines. The City Commission recently approved a resolution which supports the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Kindness Initiative which advocates adopting a culture of kindness in communities, building up the social infrastructure, and making cities resilient, happier and healthier. This initiative is the result of a meeting last year between the Dalai Lama and the USCM where they discussed the "One Hundred Billion Acts of Kindness Across America Initiative," a policy that embraces compassion and kindness, a virtue that seeks to serve and help others through selfless acts and asks nothing in return. Various cities throughout the country have embraced this belief and put kindness as their core value, challenging residents, visitors and businesses to model kindness in their interactions with one another. I've always said and believe Pembroke Pines is one of the greatest cities in our country, so I wasn't surprised when our Commission immediately agreed to our creating a resolution that supports our goal to increase civility, promote character development and create more positive school climates with our students and beyond. The Broward County School Board, along with the support of mayors, is creating a plan to have students participate in acts of kindness throughout the school year as part of this initiative. The Board, along with City of Pembroke Pines, will be kicking off the first Kindness Initiative Event on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the William B. Armstrong Dream Park so please mark your calendars. Additional information will be posted on our City’s website at ppines.com. We have many other events, activities and programs planned for this new year, and are also very excited that our Pembroke Pines City Center project will be completed and open to the public. Please continue to check our website; on our Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines; on Instagram under Pines Media; and on YouTube under Pembroke Pines Media. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Wishing you all a great, safe and prosperous new year! Your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

PET HEALTH
Pet Food Facts and Myths BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN
I
F YOU GO TO ANY PET STORE, OR EVEN TO THE LOCAL supermarket, you will see that there is an extensive selection of commercial diets available now. This trend is expected to continue since the pet food market represents a billion-dollar industry, and many companies want a piece of that market. This phenomenon makes choosing the perfect food for your cat or dog a very confusing task. Caring pet owners are left to do research and reach conclusions regarding pet diets on their own. The problem is that many times the sources of the research are not the most accurate ones, and decisions are made based on internet pet food websites, blogs, trainer/groomer testimonials or the advice of the actual person selling you the diet. When choosing an ideal diet for your pet is important to be skeptical of label claims, since many are marketing tools to distinguish the product from the other competing products in the market, and to persuade the pet owner into purchasing a more expensive product. Also, keep in mind that the ideal diet for one pet might not be ideal for another pet. The “best diet” is a relative term. With this in mind let’s review the trendier selling gimmicks: 1. GRAINS MUST BE AVOIDED A very common statement heard since the pet food industry recently began to grow into a very profitable market is “Corn and soy are fillers that cause food allergies. Gluten is also a common allergen”. This is not totally correct. Only about 10 percent of the total population of allergic pets are allergic to food; the clear majority are allergic to inhalant allergens. From that small proportion of pets with food allergy, the great majority are allergic to lactic products and animal protein (beef, chicken and fish are the most common allergy causing proteins). Corn and soy on the other hand, are important sources of carbohydrates and are rich in vegetable protein. If wheat (with gluten as protein) is avoided and replaced entirely by other carbohydrates sources such a potato or tapioca, there could be risk of gas and soft stool in certain individuals, due to the lack of the adequate fiber required for proper digestion. It is important to remember that dogs only require 20-30 percent of animal protein in their diet, while cats need to eat an obligatory 30-40 percent of animal protein. Neither one of these species require a 100 percent protein diet. Lastly, it needs to be point out that food allergy blood tests are not accurate at all for diagnosis of food allergies. For proper diagnosis, a food trial designed and closely supervised by a licensed veterinarian and performed through several months is required. 2. STAY AWAY FROM GMO’s Throughout thousands of years, plants and animals have undergo spontaneous mutations causing changes. Today, humans can manipulate the DNA of cells and modify crops and animals . It is a controversial topic since, even though there are claims of adverse effects in humans and animals, those claims have not been validated. In fact, many inaccuracies have been found in the reports suggesting adverse effects. It is known though that there are rigorous safety testing procedures before a GMO reaches the market, including evaluation of the proteins for allergies and short/long term safety testing for the consumer, among other measurements. Benefits of the GMO are reduction of soil erosion and resistance of the crops to insects, drought and disease. It is your decision as your pet’s advocate whether to avoid GMOs in the diet, however there is no evidence now that GMO’s represent a threat to your dog or cat’s health.

ARTS CORNER
Chermayeff’s “Untitled” is a Backdrop to Mexico
ARTS CORNER
BY ALLEGRA NAGLER
A
RTIST AND DESIGNER IVAN CHERMAYEFF’S 1984 BOLD, GRAPHIC, ceramic tile mural, “Untitled,” currently graces the front of the Broward County Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale, but it may now be re-titled “Olé.” On a late November afternoon, a dozen Mexican mariachi bailarines side-stepped and cha cha’d in front of the mural -- one of the county’s commissioned public artworks -- imparting new life and meaning to the iconic facade. As part of Broward County’s Public Art & Design program’s celebration of its 40th year, each month selected artworks are being paired with local dance troupes in a series titled Counterpoints. Chermayeff’s “Untitled” backdropped the dance group Folklorico Azteca at the site of this photo shoot. Under the direction of Puebla native, Paco Huerta, the dancers, dressed in brightly colored costumes typical of the Mexican states of Jalisco and Nueva Leon, provided a cultural counterpoint and context to Chermayeff’s creation. Envisioned as way of rethinking the county’s public Art & Design program, the traditional Mexican dancers provided a juxtaposition of the traditional and the modern; the static and the dynamic, the geometric and the sinuous. Like two melodies combined in harmony with each other, the vivid movement of the dancers in their traditional dress, contrasted against the modern backdrop of Chermayeff’s, volumetric and colorful design, creating a counterpoint of two art forms, resulting in new ways to see them both. In front of the red, white and blue tiles repeated rhythmically across the front of
the building, the dancers tapped out their folkloric rhythms, in graceful contrast to Chermayeff’s triangular and square designs. As the Andrews Ave. bridge went up and the traffic light changed from green to red, the troupe two-stepped across the crosswalk; the men, handsome in boots, red bolero jackets and gold buttons, black bow ties and black velvet sombreros, and the women in multi-colored skirts and head ribbons. Cars honked, and passersby stopped to take selfies while a Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue truck honked and signaled a thumbs up when they spotted the dancers. Photographer Tabatha Mudra snapped furiously, positioning the dancers, raising a chin here or there, fixing loose strands of hair. “It’s all about creating moments,” she said. Mudra captured many moments, one of the highlights being the shot of fourteenyear old Andrea Gonzalez, a 9th grader at Western High School and the daughter of the group’s dance instructor, Mexico City native Irais Muruet. Archived on film was Gonzalez, her head cocked to one side, in full plumage - caught up in the swoosh and swirl of her skirts, the hems whirling like colored pinwheels as she stepped and twirled. “This is an opportunity to bring out our many public art treasures, dust them off and revisit them again in a new light,” said Leslie Fordham, the county’s Public Art and Design Administrator. “The arts play an important role in our community, thanks to our county commissioners, who had the foresight to realize and cultivate our cultural
diversity and enrich our community. As is this case, they bring the community together to witness form, light, color and dance. It makes people happy.” In total, there are more than 260 artworks installed at 90 locations throughout Broward County. For Chermayeff, who has also created many memorable advertising logos (including ones for Showtime, Pan American Airlines and the NBC Peacock) using his “Untitled” mural as a backdrop to the Grupo Folklorico Azteca, depicts a tabula rasa, one that not only can stand on its own, but complement other art forms and reflect a new artistic concept back to the viewer. As they say in Mexico, “¡Ándale!” Allegra Nagler is a writer with the Broward Arts Journalism Alliance (BAJA), through the Cultural Division. She grew up in New York in an artistic household where her father was an artist. Art and culture were at the forefront of her early experiences. From a young age she was exposed to working artists, museums, and the appreciation of art. She discovered she could use her writing skills to connect to artists, the art world and to be involved in creative endeavors. 28

PET HEALTH
Pet Food Facts and Myths (Cont.) 3. RAW DIETS ARE HEALTHIER The benefit of raw diets is controversial since there is no documented evidence that feeding raw diet has any health or nutritional advantages over cooked foods. The selling point that canine and feline ancestors depended on raw diets and so it’s the “natural diet” is not a strong point, since our pet’s genetic makeup and lifestyle differs from those of their ancestors. Raw diets could potentially promote growth of pathogenic bacterial contaminants, which could lead to disease not only to the pet, but also to the owner handling the diet. If feeding a raw diet is your preference and your pet is doing well on it, continue feeding it. However, consider light cooking to kill any bacterial contaminants. Each type of diet has advantages and disadvantages, and the price of the pet food does not always equates with the quality of the diet. With this in mind, when choosing a commercial diet look for a pet food company that has a long successful history in the industry, that has scientists with doctorate degrees in nutrition formulating the diets, that sources their own ingredients, and makes their own food in their own factories under rigorous quality control testing. Look for a diet that your cat or dog likes and keeps them healthy, lean, and producing normal stool with no excess gas. Consult the one person that can give you sound professional medical and nutritional advice regarding your best friend: your veterinarian. Dr Marta Sanchez-Emden is the founder of the Animal Health and Rehab Center in South Miami. She has been practicing Veterinary Medicine in Miami for over 20 years. As a Certified Veterinary Journalist, she is the resident veterinarian for various national TV shows. She authored the book “CHIHUAHUAS : How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend,” available on Amazon. It Takes Guts to Be in the Holiday Spirit BY WILLIAM B. MILLER, JR., M. D.
H
AVE YOU EVER BEEN CHIDED FOR NOT BEING IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT? Who wouldn't be in a sour mood when dealing with all of the stress that comes with this time of year? From choosing the perfect gift for relatives and trying to perfect the perfect pie to traveling, decorating, hosting… it can be excruciating. So, it has always been our natural assumption that feeling low around the holidays is a reaction to these obvious negatives. However, recent research has revealed some surprises. It might be that you just don't have the guts to take the holidays. Recent research has revealed that our gut bacteria can significantly affect our food choices and resulting moods. The focal point of this interaction is now believed to be through connections between an important nerve, the vagus nerve, and the 100 million nerve cells that are part of our digestive tract and its trillions of companion microbes. Through these connections, microbial signals pass from our gut to the base of our brain. This is the way that our personal microbes have the capacity to manipulate our behavior and mood. Their metabolism alters the signals that get sent to the vagus nerve and are further transmitted to our brain. These interactions can change our taste receptors and then, even our most basic choices. Through these pathways, some of the released microbial metabolites are perceived as chemical rewards. These can improve our mood. Others can make us feel unwell. For example, in an experiment with mice, certain strains of bacteria increase anxious behavior. In a human trial, drinking a probiotic containing Lactobacillus casei, a significant gut microbe, improved mood assessment for some participants. Contemporary research is uncovering many such previously unsuspected physiological pathways between the crucial microbial life within us or on us and our own cells. Previously, it was believed that we merely co-exist with this additional life. Our newer understanding is that these microbes are essential for our wellbeing. And this new science, now termed the science of the 'hologenome', is revealing a number of surprises: »» The number of these participating microbial cells outnumber our own native cells by a factor of 10 to 1. There are over 100 trillion of them in you and on you. »» The amount of genetic material in those cells outnumbers our 'own' genetic material by more than 100 to 1. At least 10,000 species of microbes are part of you. »» Our intestines have more nervous tissue than our spinal cords, which is one reason that our gut can modulate brain activity. »» Foods we eat can alter these microbial communities, which can affect complex human behaviors such as anxiety, learning, memory, satiety, appetite and social interactions. Preliminary research is indicating that the regular consumption of probiotics, like some yogurts, may have beneficial effects on brain function by affecting our emotions, sensation, and thinking. »» Our microbial partners have a crucial impact our immune systems and neurological functions. New therapies for neurological disorders are being evaluated including microbial treatments for multiple sclerosis and autism. »» Our crucial metabolic functions such as energy expenditure, fat metabolism and inflammatory responses are heavily dependent on our microbial inhabitants. Obesity, diabetes, arthritis, autoimmune disorders and even depression may one day be treated by adding specific microbes to our diets or by microbial transplants. All of this new information represents exciting new avenues for research, unbiased evaluation and testing. Right now though, there is a practical opportunity that might influence your holiday choices. Gauge your reaction to the influx of highly caloric foods that characterize the holiday season. It may not suit your system and your mood may suffer. You can experiment with foods and try to carefully assess how they influence your own unique body rhythms and demands. Try some probiotics and see if they affect your sense of wellbeing or lead to a lower level of anxiety. Most significantly, the message of the hologenome is plain. You make human choices, but your inescapable microbial fraction also responds. Modern science understands this crucial partnership that has previously remained hidden throughout human history. Our better health is centered within that nuanced understanding. Dr. Bill Miller has been a physician in academic and private practice for over 30 years. He is the author of The Microcosm Within: Evolution and Extinction in the Hologenome. To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056
