OLIDAYS ARE NOW OVER, AND WE WERE VERY BLESSED WITH WONderful weather and amazing activities, such as the Snow Fest by Pembroke Pines City, I myself came out with my kids and friends, we had a good time and the Food trucks were great too. With a new year comes new resolutions such as hard work, loosing weight, more travel, reading more etc.…We have tried in this edition to cover all new resolutions. On the loosing weight front, have you guys checked out Orange Theory with their different approach of not dieting but changing your life routines? It’s good to look into it. Also, for those that like to start the year with some exercise goals, there are two important events coming up, The Miramar-Pines Rotary 5k-10k running event on January 22nd and The Tour of Broward running or cycling event on February 26th. Everybody looking for a good start to a new healthy you should participate on those, they are fantastic, Mayor Wayne Messam was in the front line at the Tour of Broward last year, fun times!! Finally what about the new building on Pines Blvd and Palm Ave. The Pembroke Pines City Center is looking really beautiful; check it out on the front cover right now. Well my dear neighbors hope you have a great start of this New Year!

COMMUNITY NEWS
STAYING IN TOUCH Formerly OCTV, Pines Media TV has re-launched with a new name, a new format and new programming, looking to cover local news in a more timely manner. They also hope to feature more residents in each feature, giving the Pines community a preview of upcoming events as well as covering current events, activities and programs. The channel can be found on Comcast Channel 78 or Channel 16 on AT&T. Short videos of what’s happening throughout the city are also being posted on the city’s Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines as well as on youtube.com and vimeo.com under Pembroke Pines Media.
KINDNESS IN ACTION The Pines City Commission has approved a resolution to advocate a culture of kindness in the community. Based on the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Kindness Initiative, the resolution was borne out of a meeting between the USCM and the Dalai Lama in early 2016 where they discussed the “One Hundred Billion Acts of Kindness Across America Initiative,” a policy that embraces compassion and kindness. The Broward County School Board is also creating a plan for students to participate in acts of kindness throughout the school year.
GOING GREEN AT HOME Pines residents can do their part to green the community—and the world—via a program that encourages residents to pay utility bills electronically through automatic monthly payments. Simply visit ppines.com to download an application, which will then take about 30-to-60 days to process. “Paperless payments not only save time, they save money. And best of all, it helps the environment,” Commissioner Jay Schwartz told Pines City Connect. “As the year ends and a new one begins, this is a great opportunity to consider going green with your utility bill.”

Seven Thousand Enjoy Arctic Weather and Adventures in Pembroke Pines
M
ORE THAN SEVEN THOUSAND people enjoyed much more than reindeer games at the 2016 SnowFest event hosted by The City of Pembroke Pines. This year’s SnowFest had 75 tons of snow, a record amount for South Florida! “There was so much snow in Pembroke Pines we created Arctic Central, located between the North and South Poles,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. Santa Claus sat in his decorated sleigh listening to whispered requests from children and adults, while all around him children were playing reindeer games and testing toys in Santa’s Toy Test Lab and building ornaments with Snapology. The Snowman Speedway Bumper Cars was a very popular addition enjoyed by all ages and the Mrs. Claus Kitchen was a hands down favorite with children, who made healthy snacks for themselves and reindeer food to help guide Santa’s reindeer on December 24th. Superstar Productions enhanced the holiday fun playing holiday favorites, holiday performances on the Pembroke Pines stage included Zootopia and local children performed. Pembroke Pines residents enjoyed all that was offered including the staples such as face painting, holiday tattoos, reindeer ears and noses, rides, games, arts and crafts and The Food Truck Invasion. “This Holiday Season we have seen many more people participating in our Special Events, and we wish everyone a very happy and healthy 2017,” concluded Novo. SnowFest 2016 was made possible due to generosity of Bright Star Credit Union, American Pediatric Dental Group, Naidu Orthodontics, Judy’s Bath and Boutique, Memorial Hospital West, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Snapology and Costco. Special Events are presented by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department. For additional information please contact Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines at its new phone number 954.392.2116 or via email FNovo@ppines.com.

Memorial Regional Hospital South Celebrated its 10th Anniversary by Giving a Gift to Others
T
HE FACILITY, HOME OF THE MEMORIAL Rehabilitation Institute, cut the ribbon on its latest “Fitness Zone,” a designated area within Markham Park that features equipment that can be used by anyone interested in exercising. That includes those in wheelchairs or with physical challenges, since the equipment has been designed to be accessible to those at all fitness levels and abilities. The venue was unveiled at a lunchtime event attended by dignitaries connected to the Memorial Healthcare System and Broward County Parks & Recreation, a partnership that has installed similar fitness zones at four previous park locations located in adjacent cities including Cooper City, Hollywood, and Miramar. Speakers at the ribbon-cutting in Sunrise included Memorial Healthcare System President & CEO Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE, Douglas A. Zaren, FACHE, Administrator and CEO of Memorial Regional Hospital South, and Broward County Parks & Recreation Director Dan West. “Our alliance with Broward County pays dividends to all those seeking to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Zaren. “It was especially important that the Fitness Zone feature adaptive equipment, since we’ve had great success using sports and exercise to help patients who have suffered strokes, lost the use of limbs, or are coping with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.” The exercise area is the latest ADA-compliant addition to Markham Park’s offerings. The county facility already features a four-mile adaptive mountain biking trail, extra wide walking/jogging paths, a dog park

with concrete pads, a shooting range with wheelchair accessibility, and areas for camping. The park is located at 16001 W. State Road 84 in Sunrise. The Memorial Fitness Zone can be used to warm up, cool down or as its own fitness regimen. Instructions explain how to use the equipment. The Fitness Zone will be free for use. The park’s regular gate entrance fee of $1.50/ person – children 5 and under are free – is in effect on weekends and holidays only. “We are extremely proud and excited to celebrate our hospital’s 10th anniversary with this milestone event and partnership for the South Florida community,” said Fernandez. “The Memorial Regional Hospital South is home to Memorial Rehabilitation Institute which serves as South Florida’s largest provider of physical rehabilitation services. We are committed to promoting access to a healthy and fit lifestyle regardless of fitness level or disability.” The Memorial Healthcare System, also known as the South Broward Hospital District, is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the United States and has served South Florida since 1953. Featuring six hospitals, a nursing home, home health services, primary care and urgent care centers, it has nearly 150 research studies underway across multiple adult and pediatric disciplines. Memorial has received numerous awards and accolades through the years. Most recently, the system was among Modern Healthcare magazine’s “Best Place to Work in Healthcare,” Florida Trend’s “Florida’s Best Companies to Work For,” and Becker’s Hospital Review’s “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare.”

Pines High School Students Mentor and Act with Academic Village School Performers in Holiday Showcase
T
HE EIGHTH ANNUAL PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL HOLIDAY program titled Winter Fantasy showcased 300 Fine Arts Department students who performed to a sold out audience of 500 at the Susan B. Katz River of Grass Auditorium in Pembroke Pines. The Holiday Show was initiated by Andrea Kidd, a Fine Arts teacher for 33 years, eight of which have been with the Pembroke Pines Charter High School. “Our Holiday Program showcases the talent of our High School Art, Drama, Music and Dance programs and students from the Advanced Drama program at the adjacent Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School Academic Village Campus,” said Kidd. In addition to having become a much anticipated tradition, the Holiday Showcase serves as an opportunity for the Charter High School Fine Arts students to mentor the Middle School Advanced Drama students and raise funds for the needs of the ever expanding PPCHS Electives Department. “Our Winter Fantasy production highlights the seamless system-wide Fine Arts instruction we provide our students. Working together to showcase our Drama, Dance, Art, Jazz Band and Advanced Drama results in a beautiful effort and illustrates the collaborative mentality of the Pembroke Pines Charter School System,” said Kidd. Added Pembroke Pines Charter High School Principal Peter Bayer, “Our Holiday Show was terrific and gets better every year.”

Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Five Steps to Greater Fulfillment in 2017 BY DR. WILLIAM SCHIEMANN
I
T’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO accomplish in 2017. But wait! Past research tells us that 92 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail. So you might say, why bother? Instead, perhaps you should go about those resolutions in a more effective way. There are a number of reasons why resolutions fail—overly ambitious targets, peer pressure, no measures and most importantly, no real sustainable changes in behavior. But there are some secrets to resolutions that actually work. The most important one is whether they lead to you becoming more fulfilled in life. We know from our research that nearly everyone wants their lives to be more fulfilling, but 80% of people are far from it. So if you think about your plans for the New Year in light of becoming more fulfilled, you are far more likely to be successful in achieving them. Here are a few tips from those who are most fulfilled: 1. Start with your long-term goals. If you don’t have them, create them. If you have them, it’s time to reassess them. While this may feel scary, it is really the only way to plan your future. In my recent research at the Metrus Institute looking at those who were most fulfilled, we found that these folks had a vision for their life— where they would like to be later in life — what they would like to have accomplished. For Millennials, that might be a career goal or a family or relationship goal. For Xers, it might be an end of career objective (I want to become a VP in my company) or something more personal, such as taking up a new sport or hobby, or building stronger personal relationships. For recently retired Boomers, it might be bucket list items, such as visiting a country you have always wanted to see. Don’t be afraid to put a stake in the ground, you can always adjust it later! 2. What are your fulfillment drivers? Next, think about the things you do that are helping you achieve your dreams. It might be taking courses in school, dating, practicing a sport, hobby or musical instrument, or digging deeper into your religious or spiritual beliefs. Or, it might be performing well at work so that you can get that promotion or become skilled for a future job. These are your drivers of success and fulfillment. Unless you think about the connection of these drivers to your long-term vision and goals, they may all feel alike. In reality, some are always more important to your long-term fulfillment. Gut feel and what feels good at the moment may not be the best for the long haul. I didn’t like some of the courses I had to take to get my degree, but I had a vision of what the degree could provide for me in the future, so I learned to devote enough time to studying instead of playing cards with my friends as my gut would have preferred. 3. Time. Time is one of the biggest challenges to your resolutions. Remember, we all have the same amount of time each day, but some people use it more wisely. Personally, until I mapped my time for a week or so each year, I didn’t realize how much of my time was wasted in tasks that were not really helping me work toward my goals. Map your time—I’ll bet you will be surprised how it is being used. Periodically, I try to rebalance my time because we all get pulled in different directions.

FROM THE MAYOR
Dear Readers… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR
Happy New Year Miramarians!
I
AM SO EXCITED ABOUT WHAT'S IN STORE FOR OUR GREAT city in 2017! One of my continued priorities for the upcoming year is economic development and job creation. To prepare for this focus, in the past year, I have visited a number of companies based in Miramar - those that are new relocations to our city as well as those who have expanded their operations as a result of their success in our great city. Many of these companies are in aviation, telecommunications and biosciences. My visits allowed me to hear from these firms to see how our city government can assist in their continued success. Also during my visits, a number of them have stated that they have open positions and would like to fill with people located in the Miramar area. This seemed an ideal opportunity to put various connections together - in particular, qualified residents looking for jobs and companies in search of people to fill their open positions. To assist candidates best prepare for opportunities and professional development, my office has partnered with Nova Southeastern University to develop programs that will provide needed training for these positions. With that in mind, we will hold our next “Let’s Talk” – Jobs! On Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at City Hall. Find out how Miramar has attracted some of the best companies in the country and how you can prepare and land one of their high paying jobs. Get set for the Mayor’s Annual 3K Walk/Run and Health Fair taking place on Saturday, March 4, 2017, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Town Center. This community wide family event is designed to get Miramar Fit. This year, we have added yoga to the activities and hope you will join us whether you are a couch potato or full on marathon runner! Memorial Healthcare Systems and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital will again participate and provide free health screenings. In addition, attendees can participate in cooking demonstrations, spinnercise and aerobics. Last year, over 800 people participated in the day’s activities and we anticipate over 1000 will come and commit to being #MiramarFit! For additional information about either of these events, please contact my office at 954 602-3198 or via email at elaroche@miramarfl.gov. The City of Miramar’s Adult Day Care Center received its official license for operation and is now providing aid to our residents who are in need of these services. To learn more visit our Social Services Department website at MiramarFL.gov/442/Social-Services. An update regarding the Oil drilling application filed by Kanter Real Estate to drill for oil in Miramar: The Florida Department of Environmental Protection rejected the application which was a good start. At this time, Kanter has appealed the rejection but the City of Miramar with our supporters, will continue to oppose this request and keep you updated with information. We should all be excited about all that is taking place in Miramar – More homes are being built, more businesses are opening and events continue to help make Miramar a destination location. Let’s make 2017 the best year yet. In Service, Wayne Messam, CGC, LEED AP, BD+C Mayor, City of Miramar

TRAVEL
2017 – The Year of The Traveler BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ
I
THE JOY OF GIVING 4529 Weston Rd. • Weston, FL 33331 Located at Weston Commons Plaza 954.515.0504 • info@miaoflondon.com
RECEIVED AN EMAIL THE OTHER DAY ASKING ME FOR SOME TRAVEL TIPS. Even a seasoned traveler like myself has learned some important lessons over the years. I have found it’s not just the practical tips, but also your mindset that can make or break a trip. 1. Don’t schedule anything that won’t be easy to get out of for the day after you arrive in the event you miss your flight. 2. Travel as light as possible. Be realistic. Are you really going to read those three books you packed? 3. Find a way to have inner peace. There will always be some glitch, small or big. Don’t let it ruin your day or your trip. 4. Along with tip number three comes patience. Let go of things you can’t control. 5. Get to the airport early. This means don’t wait until the morning of to start packing. 6. Have a toothbrush, underwear, snack, pen and paper, travel documents and lotion in your carryon. Keep a copy of your license, passport and health insurance in a separate place as well. 7. Take a picture of where you parked your car and have your hotel address and phone number saved in your phone. 8. Make a packing list. Don’t rely on your memory. Write it down. I actually make copies of it so I have one for every trip. 9. Don’t jam pack your itinerary – leave room for surprises. 10. If you travel with someone, separate your things into each other’s luggage so if a bag gets lost, you each have some of your travel items. 11. Separate your cash and a credit card and have a backup stash. 12. Don’t compare. Each place you visit offers new things. Appreciate your destination for what it is and don’t spoil your trip by comparing to another city, hotel or experience. 13. Find the local hangouts. 14. Use missed opportunities for new opportunities. Missed your dinner reservation? No problem, explore a new place. 15. Travel insurance is a must. 16. Don’t take no for an answer. If there is something you want to do, find a way to do it. 17. Take the time to engage locals in conversation. It always turns out to be a fun experience and provides some valuable information about the area. 18. Wear sunscreen. Nothing can put a damper on things more than a raging sunburn. 19. Backup your photos. You want to keep those memories in case you lose your computer or it crashes. 20. Be aware of your budget and the cost of things. Nothing is worse than going on a trip only to find out you can’t afford to really enjoy all that it has to offer. 21. And of course, let someone back home have a copy of your itinerary and stay in touch with family or friends. Traveling is a gift we give ourselves. The world is a big, beautiful, exciting place so start packing! Debbie Martinez is a South Florida resident and Travel Editor. She can be reached at debbiemartinez1@mac.com.

ARTS CORNER
A Fresh Approach To The Fort Lauderdale Fringe Festival
ARTS CORNER
BY DINA WEINSTEIN
F
ORT LAUDERDALE FRINGE FESTIVAL’S NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, BRAD Beckman, plans to take the event into edgier, more progressive waters, with juried and invited performers and risky avant garde messages. Hosted by Broward College, this usually uncensored, live theater event aims to fuse the South Florida community with innovative and exciting forms of art, Friday April 21st through Sunday, April 23rd. “The goal is to get exposure to as many artists as possible,” Beckman said in December while the festival’s performer application period was still open. “In the past, it was smaller and very local. We are endeavoring to grow it, to make it more cosmopolitan in terms of the sense of itself, a more substantive thing.” A showcase for the performing arts, particularly theater and comedy, dance and music are represented as well. Fringe Festivals are internationally known as being often completely open to anyone wishing to stage an original piece of performance art in any form. Now in its third year, the Fort Lauderdale Fringe Festival holds the middle ground with the majority of performances unjuried. Also unique is that 100 percent of the sales are given to the artists themselves. The performing artist’s application is open until January 27, 2017. Beckman’s vision includes politically-challenging work and at least two shows in Spanish. Beckman is an adjunct theater professor at Broward College as well as a director, actor and award-winning playwright who has plied his talents around the country and South Florida. Wall-to-wall performances are scheduled to run April 21, 22 and 23. Most performances are less than 60 minutes, with 90 minutes as the longest and many less than 30 minutes. The opening night cocktail reception Thursday, April 20, at Bailey Hall features the film “Hunky Dory” about a glam rock dilettante forced to care for his son. The reception starts at 6pm and film starts at 7:30 pm. Anchoring venues will be Broward College Willis Holcombe Center, Building 33 at 111 E Las Olas Boulevard and Building 32 at 225 E Las Olas Boulevard. Beckman is also working to host events at Broward Center for the Performing Arts, non-traditional spaces along Las Olas and the Horvitz Auditorium at NSU Art Museum. “A true Fringe Festival is progressive leaning,” said Beckman. “The orientation of people who run these kinds of festivals is toward those various fringy, uncensored sensibilities. Edgy and polarized artists perform as it is generally a harder thing for these productions to get [stage] time.” One invited artist is Neil David Seibel with his performance Normal Giant, a one man show about Normal, Ohio and a race of giants who live outside the town, exploring immigration tensions. Also on the schedule is the lovable comedian Megan Gogerty’s show Lady Macbeth and Her Pal, a play about an actress who is nixed for the role of the notoriously nasty character but tries to convince her friends that she would make a good Lady Macbeth despite her sunny disposition. “The range of things that gets presented includes artists who are highly accomplished and those who are new to it,” said Beckman. “It is the unknown quality that makes it attractive,” said Dan Barnard, Broward College Associate Dean of Cultural Affairs and Fringe Festival managing producer.

ORE THAN 8,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FIFTEENTH ANNUAL Storybook Festival “Into the Forest,” held at the Pembroke Pines Southwest Regional Library, located at 16835 Sheridan Street. The free one-day event was hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and the Broward County Public Library. Children watched as Fairy Tales came to life from the pages of their favorite books. Children and fairy tale characters went on magical walks through the Fantasy Forest and met Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood along with the Three Little Pigs, and Rumpelstiltskin. Children also enjoyed meeting storybook characters, who visited throughout the event, and joined with them in the Storybook Parade. “It was pure enchantment for the children who traveled through the magical forest of the transformed library,” said Holly Bonkowski, Division Director of Cultural Arts for the City of Pembroke Pines. “There was so much to do and see, it was equally enjoyable for adults who enjoyed listening to entertainers and storytellers acting out stories from their childhood.” The City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department sponsored arts and crafts tent where children enjoyed having all the tools needed to create a fairytale art project. The first 1,000 children were given a book and everyone had the opportunity to make art projects, enjoy music, dancing, and storytelling.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Five Steps to Greater Fulfillment in 2017 (cont.) 4. Grit. One of the key factors we learned from our interviews on getting to fulfillment is that nearly everyone has key setbacks in their life—health issues, missed promotion, divorce, or loss of a long-term friend. But the most fulfilled people find a way around these setbacks. Building resilience is a key skill, but there are some tricks to making it easier. The most common one is having a great network and some really close friends. If you don’t nurture your network, it won’t be there when you most need it. Many of our most fulfilled interviewees had developed mentors, and it was those mentors who fueled their fires to get up and overcome the setbacks. 5. Take a Risk. Many of the Baby Boomers and Xers we interviewed who had been around the block a few times, said ‘take some risks, and you will be rewarded later.’ Most felt that the risks they took earlier in their careers or in relationships helped them immensely in life. Even when those risks didn’t work out, they learned a great deal that could be applied in the future. Think about what would stretch you in 2017. Asking your company for a stretch job perhaps, or take a next step in your relationship with someone. Or, many found that taking a job they weren’t totally qualified for (yet) enabled them to learn quickly and stretch their capabilities. These five steps should take you a long way to greater fulfillment in 2017 and in your life! William A. Schiemann, Ph.D. is CEO of Metrus Group. He is a thought leader in human resources, employee engagement, and fulfillment and author of Fulfilled! Critical Choices – Work, Home, Life.
