Free Rides In the Pines

I

T IS NOT TOO LATE TO MAKE A NEW YEAR RESOLUTION, RESOLVE TO enjoy a free and relaxing ride all around Pembroke Pines via the free Community Bus Service. Available six days a week, the free Pembroke Pines Community bus service picks up and drops residents off to over 184 scheduled stops/locations. Now in its 22nd year the bus service provides a dual benefit for Pembroke Pines residents who have “places to be and things to do” but do not have access to a car or the money for alternate transportation. By using one or more of the three City routes, residents also save gas money and the hassle of parking when they go shopping, attend college classes, visit the library, go to the movies, the ice skating rink, malls, grocery stores, even visiting friends at the hospital. To ensure bus routes are relevant and ridership is maximized, routes are regularly evaluated and adjusted. On a typical day, the bus service travels the Pines Boulevard corridor, from as far East as Broward College South Campus at N.W. 72nd Avenue to the Holly Lake neighborhood just west of U.S. 27 at N.W. 215 Avenue, north to Sheridan Street and south to Pembroke Road. Developed for resident convenience, the bus routes intersect at specified locations and with transit transfers to the Broward County Bus Service. “Residents are always surprised by the ease they have in getting to our route locations. A quick review of the maps and schedule is all it takes to determine the route which best fits the individual need,” said Jacque-Ann D. Isaacs, M.P.A., and Transportation Administrator, Transportation Authority, City of Pembroke Pines– Community Services Department. The Pembroke Pines Community Bus Service is comprised of three routes: Gold, Green and Blue. Each bus route operates on a different schedule. The Gold and Green Routes operate six days a week for 12 hours and the Blue East and Blue West Routes operate three days a week -- Gold 7:30am-7:21pm, Green 7:45am - 7:27pm and Blue 8am until 3:25pm. Each bus has bicycle racks, and easy to use electrical wheelchair lifts. The City Bus Service also connects with the Broward County Transit System. Buses do not operate Federal Holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. To review the bus routes, maps and schedules on the City Website ppines.com, please select City Departments, click on Community Services, then on Transportation, or pick up a transportation brochure at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus.

Dollar Dash Raises Funds for Honor Flight South Florida BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

O

N A RECENT HALF-DAY, PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL Student Government Association (SGA) members did not dash to meet friends at the beach or mall; rather they dashed to raise dollars for Honor Flight South Florida, a nonprofit volunteer program created to honor America’s Veterans. “This is the third year our Student Government Association has held a Dollar Dash for Honor Flight South Florida,” said Andrew Curry, Pembroke Pines Charter High School’s student government association adviser/AICE International History, AICE U.S. History, and leadership development teacher. “We help raise funds to fly American War Veterans to Washington, D.C. for a day trip where they tour the Veteran Memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifice, and those who did not return home.” The PPCHS - SGA students walked each floor of the six-story building carrying buckets and explaining the mission behind the Honor Flight program and the importance each donation made to City Hall employees. The Third Annual Dollar Dash to benefit Honor Flight raised just over $2,700 , up from $700 in 2016. “We knew this year’s event would be a great success due to the fundraising effort put in by Jay Shechter, Director of the Pembroke Pines Community Services and Housing Department took place in Pembroke Pines City Hall,” said Curry, who noted Shechter’s father and two Uncles served in World War II. “The PPCHS Dollar Dash was an incredible effort. With those funds, we will be able to fly six WWII heroes to Washington DC, to visit their Memorial,” said Ryan Paton, director of operations for Honor Flight South Florida. “We began Honor Flight South Florida in 2012, and in that time we have taken over 600 local WWII Veterans on the Honor Flight and have brought hundreds of our World War II Veterans to our local schools as guest speakers. Our WWII Veterans bring a unique life experience to the classroom, the students get to meet and learn from those who have lived World

History, and the Veterans love the experience." Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans. The organization transports veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. Of all of the wars in recent memory, World War II, which truly threatened our very existence as a nation— and as a culturally diverse, free society. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. The Honor Flight Network reports that it has flown over 159,000 veterans to the Washington, D.C. memorials since 2005. “The Pembroke Pines Charter High School annual Dash for Dollars Honor Flight event exceeded fundraising history and expectations, “said Jay Shechter. “Thanks to these students, six World War II Veterans will be flown free of charge for the Honor Flight day trip to Washington, D.C. They will be honored and recognized throughout the day for their service to this great country, and arrive back home the same day tired, but feeling appreciated by the country they served.”

Marvin Gaye's 1971 critically acclaimed, landmark album What's Going On addresses social issues of the 1960s and 70s and implores America's return to spirituality. Using historic and contemporary lenses, this photographic exhibition explores the album's themes of war and economic inequality. It invites visitors to reflect on American life, especially in South Florida, in the 1970s, and to measure the progress of our society nearly five decades later.

Working for the Residents of Miramar

“I have been a faithful and humble servant for the City of Miramar. I ask for your support to serve 4 more years.” – Yvette

“I always knew that I wanted to make a difference in the world, to give back in some way and to help others. I am very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to serve as Commissioner in Miramar and to be a part of history. I am a 25 year resident of Miramar, and I have seen our city grow over the years! From the east to the west, we have all witnessed the expansion and progress in our beautiful city; our adult daycare center for seniors, new parks and after school programs for our kids and a new state-of- the art Police Headquarters. As I ride through Miramar, I am so very proud to call Miramar home. My first election was in 2013, I worked countless hours a week knocking on doors and getting to know as many residents as I could. I wanted to hear your concerns and suggestions, and I listened, I took your ideas with me when I went into office. My vision for our city is “ONE MIRAMAR”, advocating for equal services for all of Miramar. “ONE MIRAMAR” is a multicultural city with people of all cultures, living, working and socializing together as one community.

I am a Jamaican descendent, born in Panama and raised in New York before moving to the city of Miramar. I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree and my Master’s Degree in Public Administration and I have many years of professional experience in the public sector. I retired from Miami-Dade County after 30 years of service and now I am using my leadership and administrative skills to serve our City as your Commissioner. I take my job very seriously and that’s why I am your full-time Commissioner. My colleagues and I have many accomplishments including the following: 1. Keeping our taxes low 2. Hiring more police officers to keep our city safe. 3. Funded a new fire station. 4. Funded small business development grants 5. Promoted equality between Historic East and West Miramar On March 14th , I encourage you to cast your vote, for me, Yvette Colbourne, so that I can continue my work for our city. As a wife and Mother, I want only the best for my family and yours! I have served you with high ethics and integrity and will continue to fight for our city!”

FEATURE

10 WAYS

TO GREEN YOUR HOME

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

A

S THE SAYING GOES—IT’S NOT EASY BEING GREEN. WELL, NOT ALL the time. But it can be easier than you think. These days green products dominate store shelves everywhere from Fresh Market to Target and cities and counties offer homeowners multiple incentives for adding eco-friendly options to their homes. Here are 10 ways to get green today.

1. LOOK INTO YGRENE.

3. GO MEATLESS ON MONDAY.

5. CONSERVE WATER.

Working with more than 320 communities nationwide (including Pembroke Pines and Miramar), the Ygrene program enables property owners to make energy efficiency, renewable energy, climate resiliency and water saving improvements to residential, multifamily, commercial and agricultural buildings with 100 percent, no money down PACE financing. Payments are incorporated into, and repaid over time through, property taxes with terms of up to 30 years, depending on service area and type of improvement. To check eligibility simply visit the ygrene website at ygreneworks.com.

The Meatless Monday movement was founded more than a decade ago and is now active in more than 44 countries. The theory behind it is that going meatless just once a week can not only reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, but also help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water. Visit meatlessmonday. com for more information and recipes.

In addition to swapping in watersaving showerheads and low-flow faucet aerators (available for some through the city of Pembroke Pines), there are simple ways to ease your water usage: check faucets and pipes for leaks; insulate your water pipes; take shorter showers; turn off the water while you brush your teeth; plant drought-resistant shrubs and plants; and water your lawn early in the day.

20

2. CHECK YOUR LIGHTBULBS. One of the easiest swaps to make are in your home’s light bulbs. In fact, the EPA’s Energy Star says that if every home replaced just one incandescent bulb with an energy-saving bulb we would prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. Energy Star certified bulbs are easily found at most home improvement store and use about 70-90 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. In addition, they produce about 70 percent less heat, making them safer to operate.

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | February 2017

4. TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF. Many people already abide by this simple tip, thinking of it as the equivalent of washing their hands. Aside from the simple idea of not tracking bacteria into your home, removing shoes can help avoid toxins such as herbicides and lead dust from entering. Want some numbers? A study by the University of Arizona collected 421,000 units of bacteria on the outside of the shoe, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Serratia ficaria.

6. SHADE YOUR FRIDGE. Did you know that keeping your refrigerator in the shade could help it keep cool easier? You can also save energy by avoiding the fridge-graze, peeking inside the fridge can cost more than you think when it comes to your energy bills. It goes without saying that appliances should meet Energy Star standards but you can save energy on the dishwashing side by always running a full load and airdrying dishes at the end of the cycle.

7. BYOB.

9. BE COOL…THE SMART WAY.

Bring your own bags. Most stores (including Publix and Whole Foods) offer reusable bags to customers, as traditional paper and plastic have been shown to take a big toll on our natural resources. In the same vein, look for ways to eliminate waste even when packing lunches- there are loads of affordable options in BPA-free plastic as well as the ever-popular Bento boxes for kids and adults alike.

It’s hot in South Florida, but we can still go green when it comes to being cool. Change your air filters regularly to avoid issues and, if possible, switch to a programmable thermostat to help keep energy costs down. Alsomake sure equipment is serviced and up to date and set back the thermostat five-to-eight degrees when not at home.

8. DO DOUBLE DUTY. Look around; almost everything in your home can be put to good use. Ideas? Try rinsing large plastic containers of sour cream or yogurt after use for storage and travel snacks; toss used coffee grounds over flower beds of acid-craving plants; or place foam packing peanuts in the base of potted plants to help with drainage.

10. RECYCLE. The old faithful of greening, recycling keeps landfills from overflowing, reduces air pollution and conserves the energy it would take to make a new product.

THE DIRTY DOZEN

WONDERING IF YOU SHOULD ONLY BUY ORGANIC? FOR MORE THAN A DECADE THE ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP HAS LISTED WHAT THEY CALL THE YEAR’S “DIRTY DOZEN” OR FOODS THAT HAVE BEEN FOUND TO HAVE THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF PESTICIDES. HERE’S WHAT TOPPED THEIR LIST FOR 2016: 1. STRAWBERRIES 5. CELERY 9. TOMATOES 2. APPLES 6. GRAPES 10. SWEET BELL PEPPERS 3. NECTARINES 7. CHERRIES 11. CHERRY TOMATOES 4. PEACHES 8. SPINACH 12. CUCUMBERS

RESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS ARE SUPPOSED TO MAKE US FEEL BETter, but many people are unintentionally becoming sicker and putting themselves at risk without even knowing it because of the way they are taking their medications. With more than 40 percent of seniors taking five or more prescription medications, it’s easy to see why a National Institute of Health study also found that 55 percent of them take their medications incorrectly. Here are 10 tips for taking medications safely and avoiding serious complications and interactions: Storing medications: make sure your loved one’s medications are kept in a cool dry place and not on the window ledge. Keeping medications where sunlight will hit them will vastly weaken the potency of the drug. Taking too much: Overdoses are the number-one cause of medication fatalities and the most common medication error, according to an FDA study about drug errors. Watch out for loved ones who may be overusing prescription medications. Signs of prescription drug overdose include: over-sedation, mood swings and running out of medication early. Confusing one medication with another: Prescription medications frequently have names that are easy to mix up. Zantac for heartburn and Zyrtec for allergies. Lamictal for epilepsy and Lamisil for fungal infection. Celebrex for arthritis and Celexa for depression. Patients, particularly seniors with Dementia, also can mix up pills when they look superficially similar. A daily pill-minder can be a big help. Sorting daily medications in advance can prevent the wrong medication from being taken in a moment of confusion. Medicine interactions: Some medications were never meant to be mixed. With 40 percent of seniors taking five or more prescriptions and many of them receiving these prescriptions from multiple specialists, sometimes patients are inadvertently prescribed medications or take medications which are dangerous when mixed. Consult with the patient’s primary care physician and/or pharmacists to be sure. ood and drug interactions: While it’s common knowledge that certain medications shouldn’t be taken at the same time, the issue of foods interacting with drugs is less commonly discussed. For example, anticoagulants like Coumadin or blood-thinning statins can be rendered ineffective when a patient eats foods high in vitamin K. Grapefruit juice can cause potentially dangerous interactions with at least 85 medications because of the way the liver metabolizes it. Wrong route of administration: 16 percent of medication errors involve using the wrong route of administration. This could involve, for example, swallowing a tablet that was intended to be taken sublingually (Absorbed on the tongue), or as an anal suppository (yes, this happens!). Swallowing a liquid intended for injection or use as a nasal spray is another example. Mixing alcohol with medications: There are plenty of drugs that come with a bright orange warning sticker attached, telling you not to drink alcohol when taking them. But maybe the sticker fell off, or wasn’t attached in the first place or the patient just really wants a cocktail and figures it will be ok “just this once.” Alcohol mixed with a long list of painkillers, sedatives and other medications can quickly become a deadly combination. Always check with your doctor. Double-dosing by taking a brand-name drug and the generic at the same time: With insurance companies mandating the use of generic drugs whenever possible, it’s all too common for patients to get confused and end up with bottles of a brand-name drug and generic version at the same time without even realizing it. Taking prescription drugs and over-the-counter or alternative medications without knowing how they interact: It’s easy to think that something you grab off the shelf at your local grocery story must be safe, but some of the most common OTC drugs can cause serious reactions. Always check with your physician or pharmacist. Old medications: Some people stop taking their medications for a period of time for a number of reasons and then start up again. Always check to make sure the medications are not expired. FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

M

ARCH IS A VERY BUSY month for the city and we have a lot of very exciting events planned. The 19th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the Pines, hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board, is being held at the Academic Village, located at 17189 Sheridan Street. The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 12, 2017 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and will showcase fine arts and crafts vendors from around the country, live entertainment, music, a hands-on children’s art area, demonstrations, food and much more. It’s great for all ages and I encourage everyone to attend. It’s also time to “tee off” for education at my 15th Annual Pembroke Pines Charter School Golf Tournament which benefits the Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. The March 24, 2017 Golf Tournament will be held at the Pembroke Lakes Golf & Tennis Center, located at 10500 Taft Street, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is such a fun day, complete with lunch, a raffle and a wonderful day of golf, all for a great cause. In addition, I hope to see you at this year’s annual Pembroke Pines Relay for Life which will take place Friday, March 31, 2017 to Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. on the track at Walter C. Young Middle School located at 901 NW 129 Ave. Over the years, the City has raised over two and a half million dollars to fight cancer via this Relay for Life event. To join my Mayor’s Team or support the fundraiser, please call 954-392-2116 or email fnovo@ppines.com. Cancer survivors can contact the American Cancer Society at 954-200-7534 to learn of special ways they may participate in the event. Participants can also register their own time by going to relayforlife.org/pembrokepinesfl. And just a reminder to make sure you don’t miss the deadline to enter the Great Yards Award contest. Applications, which can be obtained on the city’s website, are due April 13, 2017. The Award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident, business woman and nature-lover, who tragically lost her life in July of 2011. Five Pembroke Pines yards will be selected, one yard from each City Commission District and one at-large yard. I can’t wait to see this year’s entries. Be sure to check our calendar at ppines.com for info on these and other planned events. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor, Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines

FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings Miramarians… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR

I

HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES. AS we continue with initiatives throughout the City, I want to provide you with an update on a few items: Miramar is well on our way to becoming a cultural destination. A few reasons are because what is happening at our city parks. If you’ve visited Miramar Regional Park lately, you may have noticed the canopy for state-of-the-art The Miramar Amp has been installed. The Miramar Amphitheater is scheduled to be completed in April. How exciting for our great city? There are many activities and events planned for our 5,000 seat amphitheater including festivals, concerts, fairs, family performances and so much more. With everything taking place in Miramar including the upgrading of Shirley Branca Park with a band shell for events in our Historic District and the possibility of the American Tennis Association building their headquarters and Hall of Fame Museum at Regional Park, you can see why Miramar has drawn national attention as our city continues an upward path to becoming that destination location. Our city continues to advance the “Your Bond Dollars At Work” Capital Program, which was funded by the 2013 Revenue Bond. These projects include improvements to our transit system, parks, public safety facilities and infrastructure. We are actively working to make transportation easier for our residents with the opening of the Pembroke Road Overpass, adjustments to Regional Park to alleviate the traffic on Miramar Parkway out west. The Miramar Parkway I-75 Overpass widening continues to advance and once completed, will improve transit significantly. Other capital improvement projects include landscape beautification and infrastructure work to Historic Miramar to reinforce city managed canal and backyard embankment erosion. If you are a west Miramar resident affected by the blasting being done in MiamiDade County by White Rock Quarry, please know that at recent Commission meetings, Resolutions have been passed to object to the negative impacts of the blasting and to support current proposed bills to fund a study to measure the impacts on our properties and health. In addition to the resolutions, I proposed the creation of a Blasting Advisory Board that has been adopted by the City Commission. The Blasting Advisory Board will serve to propose recommendations and report concerns to the city regarding impacts of the blasting. Please visit the city’s website to get more information regarding the Blasting Advisory Board at miramarfl.gov. Last month the city had an opportunity to celebrate the retirement of Assistant City Manager, Vernon E. Hargray. Mr. Hargray retired after 20 years with the City of Miramar. His contributions to the City are at the heart of why Miramar is the city we are today. Milestone projects including both water treatment plants, City Hall, Town Center, the Youth Enrichment Center, the new Police Headquarters, the Miramar Cultural Center, Ansin Sports Complex and soon-to-be completed Miramar Amphitheater & Shirley Branca Park Bandshell were all built in Miramar under his operations leadership. As a result of all of his efforts that helped make Miramar what it is today, the Youth Enrichment Center, located at 7000 Miramar Parkway was renamed The Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center. A tribute well-deserved. Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar

T’S NOT EVERY ORCHESTRA THAT CAN BOAST A WOMAN CONductor, an original piece of music by a native son, and a guest soloist playing a 1683 ex-Gingold Stradivari violin. Tessa Lark, 27, winner of the 2014 Silver Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, is the current holder of the rare violin which, since 1998, has been owned by The Josef Gingold Fund of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and is loaned to winners of the competition for a period of four years. It is valued at $3.2 million. With this violin in tow, Stark recently flew in from New York in order to perform with the South Florida Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of “The Legend of Bird Mountain.” This original work by Fort Lauderdale composer Tom Hormel ,along with Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra," a tone poem inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche, was conducted by Symphony founder and maestro Sebrina María Alfonso and performed at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in a brilliant collaboration of sound, talent and expertise along with the traveling violin. Alfonso founded The Key West Symphony Orchestra in 1997 which grew into the South Florida Symphony Orchestra in 2009. Now celebrating its 19th season, the Symphony performs nearly 50 masterworks, pops, tropical beats and summer chamber concerts each year in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach counties. The violin, formerly owned by Josef Gingold, concertmaster under conductor George Szell at the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the most influential violin masters, has a storied history. Gingold played this violin during his tenure at the Cleveland Orchestra until 1982 when he founded the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. Also known as the Martinelli Strad for its owner, Captinao Martinelli, who owned the violin in 1890, Gingold came to possess it from 1946 until his death in 1995 at which point it was willed to his son. For Lark, the violin holds special meaning and reverence. Her teacher, Miriam Fried at the New England Conservatory of Music, was a student of Gingold’s. Other prominent students of his include Jaime Laredo, Joseph Silverstein and Joshua Bell. “Everywhere I perform with this violin, people come up and recount a personal anecdote they have about Josef Gingold and his Stradivari violin,” says Lark. “I feel a direct connection to him.” Lark believes that the instrument holds a musical memory, similar to a muscle memory. “I can sense his emotions and feelings through the wood of the violin,” says Lark. Known for his elegant style of playing, golden tones and the warmth of his sound, Lark says Gingold’s sensibilities and those of others who played the Stradivari before him mingle with her own arpeggios. The violin, handcrafted in Cremona, Italy has been modernized and reinforced over the ages, according to Lark, and given a longer bridge and steel strings. Lark, a soloist who plays around the world with various orchestras, hopes to visit the Stradivari factory this summer when she tours Italy with the Peninsula Youth Orchestra from the San Francisco Bay area. Lark will keep the instrument until fall of 2018, at which time another competition winner will treasure it for the next four years. “I’m already setting myself up for the grieving process,” says Lark, who is shopping around for another violin to play. “I cherish the opportunity to perform with such a special instrument and will play as many engagements and create as many recordings as I can, while I can. I hope the next recipient takes as much pleasure in this violin as I do. I hope my love comes through to them.” Visit artscalendarblog.com to view an interview with Sebrina María Alfonso. TRAVEL

In a Land Far, Far Away – Camano Island BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

W

ELL, AT LEAST YOU WILL FEEL FAR, FAR away from the lights of Miami. Camano Island, which is situated between Whidbey Island and the mainland of Washington State, is a gem I found that gave me back the serenity that I had lost in the city. With its 56 miles of beaches, quaint inns and the laid back charm of the locals; I can see why the island’s slogan is “The shortest distance to far away.” If you are looking for hustle, bustle and mucho activities, this is not the place for you. There is nothing here other than reflection time, solitude and nature. Speaking of which, my few days on the island started with check in at Camano Island Inn. I drove up to a very quaint looking inn with shingle siding and river rock. Once inside I was swept away into Nirvana. The foyer led into the small dining room with wood floors and a huge river rock fireplace. The smells wafting from the kitchen made me realize I had not eaten since early that morning. I was shown to my room, which had its own deck and a hot tub overlooking the Saratoga Passage and the beach below. My room was spacious and inviting with a canopied king bed. Like I said, Nirvana. Dinner was at 6 pm so I quickly changed and made my way to the dining room. The award-winning chef outdid himself that night. I was so impressed that such a small inn would offer up such a menu and the quality and presentation was that of New York’s finest. A glass of wine in hand, I made my way back to my deck and took in the quiet of the night. The next morning’s breakfast was equally as good as the meal the night before. Note to self: walk the beach this afternoon. There was so much I wanted to do in my few days there so off I went to Iverson Spit Waterfront Preserve. It’s a little off the beaten path but well worth it. There are one mile trail loops, bird watching and of course my favorite, beach combing. Canopy Tours NW was next on the agenda and as always when it comes to zip lining, I want to stay longer than I can. I understand their nighttime zip lining in October is to die for. As Pooh would say, there was a “rumbly in my tumbly” so I was off to Camano Island Marketplace. This is a place where there is everything you need and everything you don’t need... but want anyway. There is a butcher shop, a French patisserie (where I picked up a Raspberry Maple Oat Scone), Camano Island Coffee Roasters that has the best coffee ever, local artisan wares and eclectic décor just made it all that much more whimsical. There were old, wooden, glass panes dangling from the ceiling, an old white refrigerator that housed

jars of jams and jellies and a red gas pump sitting in the corner. I can see why this isn’t just a marketplace but a gathering place for the Camano locals as well. Absolutely not to be missed is Matzke Art Gallery and Sculpture Park. Nestled among the trees is a ten-acre magical world of stone, glass, wood, metal and bronze installations. You don’t want to rush through this so please devote at least a couple of hours. My last night there I finally meandered down the grass covered walkway, past a Buddha to the beach. There was crispness to the air as I walked with only my thoughts.

I passed a swing someone had fashioned with rope and a board and came upon a rock in the sand shaped like a heart. I picked it up and continued my journey until I spotted a clump of driftwood. I made a wish and gently placed the heart inside. Just as I turned around, a whale in the distance breached and then all was still again as I made my way back down the beach. USIC, TALKING AND LAUGHTER FILLED THE AIR. ALTHOUGH THE holidays are behind you, the memories that were shared during this time with family and friends may still be in the back of your mind. You may have even played an old-time holiday song on your record player. You probably selected the right song on the vinyl album for the right moment. And the sound … it doesn’t compare to digital, does it? Do you remember the first record album you ever owned? Hmmm … was it the Beatles, Beach Boys, Bob Seger, Elvis Presley? Are you still listening to your vinyl records? Or are they gathering dust, filling milk crates in the garage, or on a bookshelf in the living room? Do you wonder if they even make these collectibles anymore in a world that is mainly digital in nature?

In the mid-60s to the late 70s, vinyl records turned music into America’s most favorite entertainment industry. Today, a record album is a click on a computer mouse. Music downloads become a taste test for the listeners as they browse music online and then purchase a few sample songs. Then, if they like what they hear, they may buy the series of songs either on a CD or a vinyl album. According to Nielsen Music, Vinyl LP sales, which have reached an all-time Nielsen Music-era high volume of 13M units, increased for the 11th consecutive year in 2016. With digital music, the value is really in its convenience and the immediacy of its delivery, and the fact you can play it while doing something else. There’s a quiet ceremony to playing a record. It requires more dedicated listening and planning. It’s the audio quality, the visual quality, and the physical touch of the artistic, one-of-a-kind cover and vinyl album. For those of us that grew up when the vinyl record album was at its peak, it also brings back many fond memories and oftentimes a smile.
