Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

PRING IS IN THE AIR … AND HOW MUCH AIR!! …IT HAS BEEN SO WINDY lately, but the temperature has been amazing, that’s why it is so wonderful to live in South Florida especially in our wonderful cities of Pembroke Pines and Miramar. Always so much to do and to see. Two weeks ago we were at the Tour of Broward and this year participants were able to raise more than $500k towards Joe Di Maggio Children’s Hospital (read about the hospital on page 10), everybody had a great time at Miramar Regional Park, its was great seeing everybody there enjoying this wonderful event for a wonderful cause. But Spring is in the air and with that come some Spring Cleaning (Pages 114-116). We have some tips in our article “Spring Forward” on how to get those chores going. And when we are done with all that cleaning, please don’t forget about your dentist. Dr. Fernando Gutierrez is our feature person of this month, you can learn more about him on page 20, a comprehensive dentist and with a friendly staff. With Spring also comes wonderful food and hydration, on (page 30) we have a great article on drinking water, such a great concept on how to stay hydrated in a delicious way, and talking about delicious please don’t forget to visit Il Toscano Restaurant, mmm!!! Stay wonderful people!!.

Kindness Initiative Launches in the Pines

D

URING THE FEBRUARY 11TH PEMBROKE PINES KINDNESS INITIATIVE Mayor Frank C. Ortis and Dr. Bob Runcie, Broward County School Board Superintendent, challenged leaders in every Broward County City to embrace the Kindness Initiative by organizing events to promote awareness for Kindness, Compassion, and Forgiveness. The City of Pembroke Pines collaborated with the Broward County School Board in hosting the first kindness community event in support of the United States Conference of Mayors Kindness Initiative. The music and activities at the free event engaged attendees to practice the broader message of Kindness: Kindness/ Forgiveness/Compassion and tolerance. As the event unfolded, people appeared to embrace the message of the day, as they participated in awareness building activities. “Everyone has the power to be kind, to forgive and be compassionate. Imagine our communities if everyone embraced this message,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis right before he tossed out the Challenge. Ortis and Runcie reminded people of all ages to serve as role models, practice patience and tolerance and create a culture of kindness in their lives to have a positive impact on those around them. The Kindness Initiative

attracted over 1,500 people to William B. Armstrong Dream Park in Pembroke Pines. The message of the day seemed to have taken an immediate hold on people, “No one honked their horn or cut anybody off, as they exited the parking lot,” added Ortis. “We hope this Kindness event has legs, and other communities accept our challenge.” Event highlights included a Community Peace Meal Picnic where families and friends decorated their picnic area with peace-filled symbols; children and adults practicing random acts of kindness promises; musical entertainment; and kindness activities that included reading books about acts of kindness, creating kindness crafts, distribution of peace coins and wrist bands, and the presentation of the Peace Pole imprinted with May Peace Prevail On Earth in four languages: English, Creole, Portuguese and Spanish to one of the participating schools and the creation of the Human Peace Sign. “We believe our community will develop a culture of kindness. Kindness doesn't cost, making the time to be nice and helpful is an investment in our community. The best part is the smile you see on a person’s face when they are the recipient of a random act of your kindness,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines.

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Named Planetree “Person-Centered Organization”

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

P

LANETREE, INC. RECENTLY DESIGNATED JOE DIMAGGIO Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Florida as the first and only children’s hospital in the world to achieve the honor of a “person-centered organization.” This provides the children’s hospital a unique commendation for the compassion and care provided to patients beyond the clinical treatment and places them in a distinguished network of only 86 other healthcare organizations worldwide with the same designation. “Since opening our doors in 1992, we have been focused and committed to the care of our patients and families. Our philosophy of patient- and familycentered care means that families and healthcare professionals are true partners working together to serve the best interest of the patient,” said Chantal Leconte, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The criteria that an organization must satisfy to achieve designation reflect what patients, family members and healthcare professionals in hundreds of focus groups say matters most to them during a healthcare experience. More than 60 specific criteria address components of a person-centered healthcare experience, including patient-provider interactions, access to information, family involvement, the physical environment, food and nutrition, spirituality, arts and entertainment, and integrative therapies. In addition, the criteria focus on how the organization is supporting its staff, opportunities for staff, patients, and families to have a voice in the way care is delivered, and the ways that the organization is reaching beyond its walls to care for its community. “The Planetree Designation is the only award that recognizes excellence in person-centeredness across the continuum of care,” said Susan Frampton, President of Planetree, Inc., an international not-for-profit organization that has been at the forefront of the movement to transform healthcare from the perspective of the patient for nearly 40 years. “The designation signals to healthcare consumers that Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is an organization where providers partner with patients and families, and where patient and family comfort, dignity, empowerment and wellbeing are prioritized with providing top-quality clinical care.” All designation determinations are made by an independent committee of international healthcare experts and CEOs from previously designated organizations. Founded in 1978 by a patient in San Francisco, today Planetree is an internationally

recognized leader in the growing movement to transform the healthcare experience by considering health care facilities, processes and protocols from the perspective of the patient. In diverse healthcare settings throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America, Asia and Europe, Planetree is demonstrating that patient-centered care is not only an empowering philosophy, but a viable, vital, and cost-effective model of care. Today, the Planetree membership network is a global community of more than 250 acute care hospitals, continuing care facilities, outpatient clinics, and consumer health libraries. The Planetree model is implemented in a variety of settings, ranging from 25-bed critical access hospitals to large urban medical centers with more than 2,000 beds. O NOW YOU’VE CLEANED YOUR CLOSETS like a pro… but what to do with all the, ahem, leftovers? Consign it, says Jennifer Kaloti, owner of Pinecrest’s The Recycled Closet. A longtime consignment shopper, Kaloti opened The Recycled Closet in 2008 and soon became a go-to source for South Florida fashionistas, earning accolades including AOL City’s Best, CBS 4 Miami Best Thrift Shop in South Florida 2010, and Miami New Times Best Thrift Shop 2013. “Consignment is a great way to make a little extra money without any hassles,” says Kaloti. Here are her tips for making the most of your closet. What are the best items to consign? We are a middle market store, so we take trend labels, everything from jeans, tops, jackets and formal gowns to handbags, shoes and jewelry. We like things from chain stores, department stores and boutiques. What is the criteria for a good consignment item? If you loved it at one time maybe someone will too! Just make sure it's freshly laundered or dry cleaned and free from stains and tears. We typically look at 20-50 items at a time. Just bring them neatly folded in a shopping bag. How does the consignment process work? Call or email us to make an appointment and we will look at your things on the spot and decide what we can sell. We enter everything in a database and if and when it sells you will receive 40 percent of the selling price. What items are you looking for right now? It's prom time! We are now accepting long gowns appropriate for high school girls, along with accessories such as shoes, evening bags and jewelry. We even have some men’s suits from J Crew, Zara and Calvin Klein... and will accept similar suits in perfect condition.

Ask the Expert: Organized by Aly

A

LY FINKELSTEIN HAS A PASSION FOR ORGANIZATION… BUT IT’S NOT EXACTLY what you think. The New Jersey-based organizational expert isn’t just driven by the visual satisfaction of de-cluttering, she’s onto something deeper, bringing her experience and eye for order to families near and far and allowing them to live with less, while creating more time for family, friends and, well, life. Taking inspiration from her “neat freak” Dad, Finkelstein has grown her business, Organized by Aly (organizedbyaly.com), to include clients from across the Northeast as well as in South Florida, helping them with everything from room transitions and home staging to executive office organization and wardrobe storage. She even offers clients moving support via “The Organized Move.” We spoke with Finkelstein to get her take on getting started, her favorite products and the one room we all seem to ignore. What’s the best way to start spring cleaning? Pick a designated spot. The closet is oftentimes too daunting for people, so pick one category: shoes or swimwear, for example. How do you decide what to keep, what to donate and what to toss? Once you’ve decided what you are going to focus on take all of those things out so you can see them. For example, remove every pair of shoes from the closet. Then clean the shelves. Once you have done that look at each pair and be very honest with yourself about what you will truly enjoy wearing again. If it's old, dirty or beat up give it away or throw it away! What’s your best advice for clients who have a hard time parting with their “stuff?” It’s often very hard to part with expensive or sentimental things, but if you are not going to wear or use the item again it is important to part with it. Space is limited (even in the largest of closets!) and making room for the things you love should be a main priority.

What are some of your “goto” products for organizing? The Container Store has a line of clear storage boxes called "our storage boxes." I am obsessed with how easy they stack, how clean they look and how inexpensive they are. I use them on every single one of my jobs! What’s the room most often neglected? The laundry room! It really should be home base for neatness and organization. I tell clients to start with a blank slate and try to keep only the essentials in the laundry room. What has been your most challenging job? The most challenging jobs are the ones where clients are reluctant to part with belongings but have a vision of a calm, serene space. Often, people have four-to-five times the amount of items in their home for the space they have. I never want anyone to feel like I am forcing them to part with their belongings, but I know that reduction is an essential component of organization.

What’s your best piece of advice for clients? Don’t overstock your home; it’s not a store. Keep the things you love and part with the rest. We live in a time where you can literally have anything you need within 24 hours... having 14 bottles of shampoo clog up your closet is unnecessary and very hard to keep neat. How did your company come about? I have always been a neat freak. My favorite activity is cleaning out my closet, basement and pantry. When my second child was 18 months old I had a strong itch to go back to work, but felt compelled to only leave my kids to do something I truly loved. When I realized being a professional organizer was a real thing I was amazed at my luck! I am so fortunate to spend my days doing something that does not feel like work to me!

HE MIRAMAR CULTURAL CENTER IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS THEATRE events and performances, art exhibitions and educational programming, but what many in the community don’t know is that MCC is actually available to host everything from weddings and birthdays to corporate events. Offering up venues such as the Banquet Hall, Botanical Garden and even Ansin Family Art Gallery, MCC utilizes in-house catering services and a professional staff of event experts to create one-of-a-kind events for those looking for a unique (and well-located!) venue. We spoke with Tamika Bickham, MCC’s Communications and Audience Development Manager about just what it means to stage your next event at MCC.

WHAT TYPES OF EVENTS ARE USUALLY HELD AT MCC?

The Miramar Cultural Center welcomes rental events like weddings, celebrations, and conferences. Our 800-seat theatre, banquet hall, art gallery, botanical garden, dance studio and classroom are available for professional and community rentals. Each year, we host about 60 professional and community arts organizations in performances ranging from theatre to music to dance to opera. At MCC, we also present our own performances, events, educational programs, and art gallery exhibitions. For example, our upcoming events include Resident Artist Ballet Etudes in Swan Lake, 10-Time Grammy Award Nominee Third World, a Mother’s Day Blues & Gospel Concert and Soul Food Brunch, and LaKisha Jones in Dreamgirls. We also have a rewarding and engaging Educational series, including school day matinees such as Charlotte’s Web, Master Classes, and a performing arts summer camp. Our Ansin Family Art Gallery is home to five art exhibitions each year. Currently on display through March 30 is “What’s Going On: Marvin Gaye’s

HOW DO YOU WORK WITH CLIENTS AND WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR RENTING A VENUE?

The entire team at the Miramar Cultural Center finds it so exciting to work with such a variety of clients, some of which include Carnival Cruise Lines, Comcast Spotlight, Venezuelan singer-songwriter Yordano, Kool & The Gang, the FBI, and even a former President, who chose our Banquet Hall to host a private event. We’re extremely versatile and no event is too big or too small for our team. Whether it’s a concert, dance recital, health fair, trade show, conference, bar mitzvah, birthday party, luncheon, or wedding, we have the experience.

The first step is to call or email us to find out if your date is available. If it is, we will book an appointment for you to meet one-on-one with a member of our sales team to talk through your event from beginning to end. Our sales team is extremely attentive and is here to cater to your needs, handling the event planning and customization of every detail from the décor to the food. Comprehensive Dental Care for the Entire Family BY ANDREA CARNIERO

OR THE EMPLOYEES OF PINES PALM Dental, working with patients and keeping them healthy comes down to one simple idea: the age-old Golden Rule. “We have as a motto, to see ourselves reflected in our patients,” says Dr. Fernando Gutierrez. “To serve them as we would serve ourselves and give them the attention we would want for ourselves.” Founded in 1982 by Dr. Bert Wattigney, the practice enjoyed a reputation for personalized service and a warm, friendly atmosphere for more than 30 years. At the end of 2014, Dr. Gutierrez took over the practice, where he has continued to cultivate a family-oriented, patient-focused space. “The patient needs to be treated as a whole, from the health aspect, psychological aspect and social aspect in order to give them ideal service,” says Dr. Gutierrez, who trained in Colombia and Washington state before returning to Miami. “Before offering treatments, the patient needs to be heard, so that we can determine their needs and give them the best treatment possible.” Aiming to see patients through the entirety of their dental needs, from childhood on, Pines Palm Dental places a focus on complete, comprehensive treatment, encouraging patients to avoid dental issues by making a commitment to annual exams. “The situations that can generate

dental problems can be solved very effectively and simply if they are diagnosed early,” says Dr. Gutierrez. “We develop whole programs that are affordable to the patients so they can have exams and dental hygiene periodically.” But even routine exams can cause anxiety for dental patients, making the need for trust between patient and practitioner even more important. To that end, the Pines Palm team takes great care to create a relaxing, positive experience, keeping patient safety at top-ofmind and offering sedation options for those who may need them. “We are here to solve situations for our patients, not to make things worse,” says Dr. Gutierrez. Additionally, Pines Palm takes advantage of the latest technology in dental care, offering everything from digital X-rays to oral cameras for thorough exams and the highest quality prosthodontic and esthetic lab. Says Dr. Gutierrez, “We’re dedicated to cultivating a practice that is family-oriented and places an emphasis on personalized service, where the main thing is the attention to the patient as a whole.” Pines Palm Dental Care is located at 9964 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines. BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

HE STORY OF IL TOSCANO, THE LATEST CULINARY offering from Marcello and Gloria Sindoni, is one that spans both countries and decades; blending a couple’s love of both food and each other to create the next restaurant in their empire. Born in Italy, Marcello relocated to the United States in the 1970s, working his way up inside the New York restaurant scene before opening his first restaurant, Azzurro. The success of Azzurro led Marcello to open six restaurants in Manhattan, one in Rome, one in Virginia, and, now, with Il Toscana, his fourth in sunny South Florida. His success is no surprise- the accomplished restaurateur has won countless accolades and infuses each of his restaurants with his own eclectic, adventurous and exciting life experiences and “wise, warm and resilient demeanor,” according to this wife. For Colombian-born Gloria, the restaurant business came after a long and accomplished career as a skin care expert in New York City and, later, South Florida. In the late 90s she crossed paths with Marcello. “It was love at first sight,” she says. Their romantic partnership gave rise to a two-decade business partnership, bringing together Marcello’s lifetime of culinary experience and Gloria’s decades of corporate expertise. In 2013 the couple sold their last restaurant. Soon, the Sindoni’s were ready to re-enter the culinary scene; bringing their talents to the Pembroke Pines community. But they needed one thing: the right chef. Enter Jose Escobar. The Colombia native brings a similar global 22

culinary experience, having cooked for the English royal family in Buckingham and Windsor palaces before taking his talents to the United States… and to Il Toscano. The restaurant (located at 20170 Pines Blvd.) offers patrons electable Italian cuisine, great cocktails in a casual chic environment, bringing the flavors of Tuscany to Pembroke Pines in every bite. Il Toscano is open seven days a week for dinner and offers a full bar and specialty cocktails.

N FEBRUARY 11, 2017 THE City of Pembroke Pines collaborated with the Broward County School Board in hosting the first kindness community event in support of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Kindness Initiative. The event engaged attendees to practice the broader message of Kindness: Kindness/Forgiveness/ Compassion and Tolerance. I knew, after attending the USCM 84th Annual Meeting kindness panel with the Dalai Lama, Lady Gaga and Phil Anschutz, that I needed to bring this Kindness Initiative back to our City. During our event, which attracted over 1, 500 people, Dr. Robert Runcie, Broward County School Board Superintendent, and I challenged other leaders in Broward County cities to embrace this Kindness Initiative and organize similar events to promote awareness of Kindness, Compassion, and Forgiveness. It was inspirational to witness all those who attended embracing the message of the day as they participated in awareness building activities, music, and the creation of a human Peace Sign. To pledge your kindness promise and learn more about the movement, please visit cityofkindness.org. This is also a very exciting month for Pembroke Pines. We will be celebrating the grand opening of our long-awaited City Center on April 19, 2017. There are many exciting activities planned for all to enjoy. Please remember to check our Facebook page, City Connect newspaper, and website (www. ppines.com) for details. And, tickets are already on sale through Ticketmaster for great entertainment scheduled for our City Center. We will also be celebrating our 57th Pines Day on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at our new City Center, 601 City Center Way. This will be a celebration like no other, complete with music, pageants, cake and so much more. I hope to see everyone there! Again, please continue to check our social media, newspaper and website for more details. For the children of our city this month, we’ve got fun activities planned with “Sundaes with the Bunny” on April 8, 2017 at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, 301 NW 103 Ave.; and our annual “Egg Hunts” at Pines Recreation Center and Pembroke Shores park on April 15, 2017. And one more hint for aspiring chess players, please start practicing now so you can join us for the “Mayor’s Chess Challenge” next month on May 20, 2017 at the Pembroke Lakes Golf & Tennis Center. It’s free for all ages and skill levels. We’ll be joined by other Mayors, elected officials and community leaders for this great challenge. It was so much fun last year, we just had to do it again. As you can see, we have a lot planned for this Spring. I hope to see you at all of our events. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor, Frank C. PET HEALTH

My Dog was Diagnosed with Knee Problems: Now what? BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

S

O, YOUR DOG IS LIMPING FROM ONE OF THE BACK legs. You may have noticed limping on and off for a few months. Or perhaps, you have observed a sudden holding of the leg from the ground, just for a couple of days. Your veterinarian diagnosed a stifle problem, and you have been told that your pet needs surgery. You are not alone. Stifle conditions are one of the most common orthopedic problems seen in dogs. The stifle is a complex joint found midways in the back leg of your dog. It involves three bones: the femur, the patella (kneecap) and the tibia. This joint is equivalent to the human knee. Even though the stifles can be affected by a large number of conditions, by far the most common ones are patellar luxations and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears. There are a number of treatment options for these conditions, which keep expanding with advances in Veterinary Medicine. Treatment recommendations are not cookie-cutter, and must be formulated based on the individual physical characteristics of the dog, the lifestyle of the dog, and the specific stifle pathology of the joint. Treatment recommendations are also dependent on the level of expertise and knowledge of the doctor performing the evaluation and recommendation. Stifle orthopedic problems are one of the veterinary conditions that will produce the most confusion among dog owners, regarding its treatment. Often, owners seek second opinions for treatment options. For all cat owners, know that cats can also suffer from ACL tears and patellar luxations, even though not as commonly as dogs. Following is a short description of these two most common orthopedic problems of the dog’s knee. The orthopedic conditions of the stifle and the possible treatment approaches are complex and very patient-specific. The important point to remember is that, if your dog shows persistent lameness in one of the back legs, do not ignore it. Get a proper diagnosis by a licensed veterinarian as soon as possible. Conservative treatment should be initiated first (rest, anti-inflammatories, professional physical therapy, custom made orthopedic devices, etc). If your dog is not improving, then surgery should be considered. Remember that the surgical repair of these conditions is not an emergency that needs to be dealt with within one or two weeks. Surgery is not without complications, and when planning on it, an experienced veterinary orthopedic specialist is required. If your dog has problems on both stifles, avoid surgical repair of both limbs on the same day. It is best to have surgery on one leg at a time, because recovery is faster when there is a healthy leg to assist with strength and balance. Professional physical therapy, when provided by a veterinarian with accreditation in this field (Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner, CCRP) will manage the stifle diseases without the need for surgical intervention, for certain patients. On the other hand, when surgery is required, it will maximize the level of recovery, and will shorten the recovery time. It is your responsibility to make the best medical decision for your canine best friend. Do not rush your decision for treatment. Always get second and third opinions, if you need to. ARTS CORNER

ARTS CORNER

Celebrating the “State of the Arts” in Florida BY ALI BERGER

T

HE INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS OF LOCAL ARTISTS AND ARTS organizations play a compelling role in the lives of local community residents and tourists alike. So when a public program allows for funding and ongoing advocacy for local arts and artists, there is much to be celebrated. Florida’s State of the Arts license plate program plays a unique role in supporting the artistic community in that it not only provides funding through sales but the plates themselves provide ongoing advocacy and awareness. Studies have shown that the engagement of the arts in communities, government and education increase cultural and abstract awareness, leading to an expanded sense of self, and community. For example, local artists bringing new perspectives and fresh ideas to downtown areas drastically makes the Broward County landscape bright. Since 1995, the Division has received more than 1.3 million dollars from the registration of these plates. In fact, $20 of the $32 registration fee for the plate is directly distributed to the local arts community, with the Cultural Division being the conduit for distribution in Broward. 100 percent of these funds are directly used for local arts causes such as assisting with the development of Sailboat bend Artist Lofts to provide living workspaces in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The lofts provide affordable housing for artists, as well as gallery and studio space. 37 units were created, ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments. Artist Stephen Kline was chosen from a panel of highly profiled local artists to design the arts license plate for the state of Florida. The 1994 design of Florida’s iconic coral and blue waves sketched over tin and metal portrayed the sea and sand that surround us. Through registration of this plate, $20 is tax deductible and gets distributed directly back to the County where it was purchased. Broward has long been the highest seller of any county throughout the state. With the incumbent population of South Florida at an all-time high, enjoying visual arts is one of the many benefits of being a local resident. As a shared community of culture and diversity, making local contributions such as this can provide a sense of belonging and satisfaction to the consumer. Visit Broward.org/Arts for more information and consider supporting the arts next time you register at the DMV or local tag agency.

HEALTHY LIVING

Eat Your Water and Sunscreen BY HOWARD MURAD, M.D., F.A.A.D.

A

GING CAN’T BE PREVENTED, BUT IT CAN BE SLOWED. THE BEST WAY TO STAVE off aging is through the use of sun protection, but not just through lotions and sprays. We can eat our way to healthier, stronger and younger skin if we simply eat our water and sunscreen. I know that sounds funny, but if we feed the body powerful nutrients, in the form of juicy fruits and vegetables, skin can be repaired, protected and fortified to slow the aging process, at the cellular level. Juicy foods offer cells the much-needed hydration they require for basic everyday functioning as well as vital nutrients needed for repair and fortification. In other words, it is far more hydrating to eat a piece of fruit than drink water, and certain nutrients in fruits and vegetables pack a punch when it comes to fighting sun damage, as they work to boost your SPF, systemically. In sunny South Florida, almost one in four people will get skin cancer. Knowing this, Miami residents should eat low acid, more alkaline or anti-inflammatory foods such as those stocked with polyphenols, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, which offer the highest amount of skin protection. This includes most fruits, vegetables and edible plants such as cucumber, citrus, berries, broccoli, avocado and even red wine.

isothiocyanates, which contain sulforaphane, stop cancer from spreading and induce cancer cell death as they work inside the cell to boost enzymatic activity that prevents oxidation. Sulfur is found in every living cell in the body and it plays a key role in collagen synthesis.

Avocado: Avocados, 70 percent to 80 percent water, are moderately alkaline. The fats in avocado are known to reduce cholesterol levels and are also cytoprotective. The oils in avocado improve the absorption of antioxidants. The carotenoids and phytosterols in avocado provide anti-inflammatory benefits.

Cucumber: One of the most alkaline vegetables. Cucumbers contain silica, a trace mineral that contributes to the strength of connective tissue, which prevents skin sagging, and fights cellulite. Cucumber skin is a good source of vitamins A, C and folic acid. Eating a threeounce cucumber is almost like drinking three ounces of water because the water content in a cucumber is about 96 percent.

Citrus: Lemons and limes are the most alkaline-forming citrus fruits. All citrus contain high levels of antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, folate and potassium. Most citrus fruits are about 87 percent water. Vitamin C removes free radicals from the cell structures composed primarily of water and from areas containing body fluids. Folate reduces the risk of arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Potassium helps move nutrients into cells.

30

Berries: Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, grapes, cherries, and pomegranates (about 80 to 92 percent water content) contain high levels of polyphenols and offer positive and preventive effects on cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke and inflammation. Most berries are moderately acidic, but contain strong anti-inflammatory properties. Flavonoids, a kind of polyphenol found in berries, help regulate nitric oxide, a free radical that regulates blood flow, and protects against blood clots and oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Systemically, flavonoids have shown to lower blood pressure. The strongest polyphenol is ellagic acid, with high levels found in raspberries, strawberries and pomegranates.

Red wine: Resveratrol, an ingredient in red wine, has been linked to a lowered risk of heart disease and is a sirtuin (anti-aging) stimulator. Early studies show that red wine’s properties may help prevent cancer in both chemically and UVB-induced skin cancer.

Howard Murad, M.D., F.A.A.D., is recognized as a leading visionary for his scientific innovations, total body approach to youth building and overall wellness. His mission and passion is to help people unlock their potential to look younger, to feel younger and to live healthier, happier and more rewarding lives.

Broccoli: Broccoli, 91 percent water, is full of isothiocyanates, sulfur-containing phytochemicals, and is highly alkaline. Known for their anti-carcinogenic properties,

Details: This year’s LUNG FORCE Luncheon will honor Vann Padgett, Senior Vice

President of Real Estate & Leasing Operations of the Las Olas Association and Pauline Grant, formerly of Broward Health. “After being smoke free for 12 years, I was diagnosed with COPD in 2007. My doctors and surgeons relied on the many years of research by the American Lung Association to restore me to health. I’m very proud of all that we do in the areas of education and lung cancer research as well, and I’m excited to be a part of the LUNG FORCE luncheon as this year’s honoree,” said Vann Padgett. Both Padgett and Grant, will be receiving a Lifetime Legacy honor in appreciation of their years of dedication to saving lives and promoting lung health to fulfill the organization’s mission. “The LUNG FORCE Luncheon is designed to raise much-needed awareness and funds for research, education and advocacy efforts for lung cancer, the #1 cancer killer in men and women. Sadly, only 2% of women in this country cite lung cancer as being a top of mind concern, and we aim to change that statistic in our community,” said Andrea Eastaugh of Tito’s Vodka, who is Co-Chairing with Jenna Ingraham of Breakthru Beverage. Howard Finkelstein, of WSVN 7News' "Help Me Howard, who has been personally touched by lung cancer in his own family, will serve as the master of ceremonies. The event will be hosted on the heels of Women’s Lung Health Week, which is a week-long celebration and lung cancer awareness effort known as Turquoise Takeover. Established by the American Lung Association, Women’s Lung Health Week is the second full week in May and encourages all residents of South Florida to turn turquoise, (the campaigns signature color) and learn more about the detection and treatment of lung cancer. During the Luncheon on May 19, guests will continue to go turquoise as they don their favorite turquoise outfit and enjoy a day of sipping and shopping in the tempting Style Lounge, where designer women and men’s fashions and accessories will be on display at the many pop-up boutiques present. Proceeds from the style lounge will further benefit the LUNG FORCE campaign. There will be a silent auction as well. The style lounge will be complemented by a chic fashion show during the program, starring the organization’s LUNG FORCE heroes and community supporters. The luncheon is presented by the Mautner Charitable Foundation in honor of Jack & Catherine Ward and benefiting the American Lung Association in Florida.
