Spring is Here!

A

S SPRING BREAK IS COMING TO AN END, WE ENJOY THE FREE TIME with family and friends. It has been a great first quarter of the year and we forecast a great rest of the year in our beautiful cities of Miramar and Pembroke Pines. For starters the Pembroke Pines City Center is now open. It is a beautiful center in the hear of the city where you can host any type of event. The inaugural show was Drumline Live, and it was quite a show. There was almost full house and we all enjoyed the show. Elections in Miramar were held for commissioners and Commissioners Barnes, Colbourne and Maxwell were re-elected. It was an exciting raise. This month we also have very exciting activities in our cities. For the art lovers Studio 18 is having the "Glory of a Moment" exhibition on the 26th. At the newly open Pembroke Pines City Center there will be "One night of Queen" on the 22nd and the Grand Opening of the Frank on the 27th. The City of Miramar will be hosting "April Pools Day" at the Miramar Aquatic Complex, on the 19th. Also, save the date for the Grand Opening of the Miramar Amphitheater on the 4th of July. Also in this issue, check page 29 on how River Cruises could be an exciting vacation option for the whole family. Stay wonderful People!

PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENTS COMPETE IN BOCA

WELCOME The Pembroke Pines community is pleased to welcome Ms. Lacresha Cooper (right, with Principal Marsha Wagner)), the new Assistant Principal of Pembroke Lakes Elementary School.

Photography students from Pembroke Pines Charter High School competed in the Second Annual High School National Society of Arts and Letters Competition at Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton. Each student received a certificate of participation as well as a 1-on-1 critique session with master photographer Fred Conrad of the “The New York Times.” “This was the first time students from our school entered the National Society of Arts and Letters Competition. This was a fantastic and educational experience for all of us,” said Faran Fagen, Newspaper and Yearbook teacher at Pembroke Pines Charter High. “One of our students, Megan Fraga, was selected for participation in an instructional demo which highlighted the importance of utilizing a variety of angles in lighting to create a desired effect.”

WORKFORCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR VETERANS Companies interested in hiring United States Military Veterans are invited to participate in The Third Annual Employment Expo for United States Military Veterans to be held on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, 301 NW 103rd Avenue, Pembroke Pines FL 33026. “We established the Veterans’ Expo to assist our military men and women who may need help getting back into the workforce,” said Community Services Administrator Silvia A. Aguilar. The Veterans’ Employment Expo is part of the Pembroke Pines Re-Energize and Re-Connect Initiative, whose goal is to provide resources and housing at the R & R Village for Active and Honorably Discharged Members of the military.

STOCKING UP ON SUPPLIES The Broward Education Foundation’s Tools for Schools “School Supplies on the Move” mobile visited Pines Lake Elementary, where they offered teachers the opportunity to could shop for supplies. Teachers picked up thousands of dollars’ worth of donated school supplies free of charge. “There are teachers at some schools that cannot make it to our Tools for Schools retail center in Pompano Beach, so for their convenience, we send our mobile unit to deliver much needed classroom supplies to those schools,” said Christina Fischer, Chair of Broward Education Foundation. “Access to essential school supplies leads to increased student self-esteem, which enhances learning in the classroom. It’s a win-win for underserved students and their teachers.”

Robotics Teams Make Pines Proud

T

HE PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER Middle School West Campus (PPCMSWest Campus Robotics Team is on a roll. After competing and winning at the local level, the team earned three coveted team slots at the 2017 Florida State VEX IQ Championship held in Tampa Florida. In January, five West Campus teams competed against 54 other South Florida teams at the RoboSLAM VEX IQ Regional Qualifying competition at the Miami-Dade Fair and Expo Center. The PPCMS-West Campus Steel Jags, Mecha-Knights, and Tech Titans advanced to the teamwork match finals, where they placed in the Top 15. The Tech Titans team also won the design award presented to the team with the most effective and efficient robot design process. “In February, the Steel Jags and the Mecha-Knights competed in the last VEX IQ qualifier, where they hoped to earn at least one of the two available slots left at the state competition,” said Fermin Vasquez, M.Ed., Science Department Chair and PPCMS Robotics Club Co-Sponsor. The PPCMS Teams were victorious in the competition against nine other teams. The Mecha-Knights and the Steel Jags posted high scores in the skills challenges, with scores of 123 and 110 earning them 1st and 2nd place and a world ranking of 49th and 92nd, respectively. The Steel Jags took first place in the teamwork challenge, with the Mecha-Knights recieving the Excellence award. The Excellence award is presented to the team exem-

plifying overall excellence in creating a high quality VEX IQ robotics program and earned the Mecha-Knights a spot in the FL State VEX IQ Championship. The high score earned by the Steel Jags won them an invitation to the state competition as well. “The Steel Jags, Tech Titans, and Mecha-Knights have worked extremely hard and I know their momentum will continue onto the State Competition. Hopefully, we will ride it all the way to the World Championships!" said Vasquez. In mid-February the PPCMS-West Campus Steel Jags, Tech Titans, and Mecha-Knights traveled to Tampa to compete in the Florida State VEX IQ Championship, competing against 61 Florida teams during the daylong event. “All three of our teams competed fiercely in teamwork and individual skills challenges and once the dust settled, the Steel Jags and the Mecha-Knights finished 5th and 8th, respectively,” said Vasquez. “I am so proud, and beyond excited to officially announce our Pembroke Pines Charter Middle School – West Campus Steel Jags and the Mecha-Knights Teams have been invited to compete in the VEX Worlds 2017 Tournament this April 23rd through the 25th in Louisville, Kentucky.” Added Pines Charter School West Campus Principal Michael Castellano, “Throughout the year our West Campus Robotics Teams have done an outstanding job competing against equally impressive teams. The teams have shown how dedication, skill and hard work pay off.

GrowOya

Tips from the National Garden Bureau

The Oyas couldn't be easier to use. Simply plant them, fill with water, cap them and check every several days to see if more water is needed. They work with any plant that has a fibrous root system, and best results have been with tomatoes, peppers (bell and chili), potatoes and other nightshades. The roots will grow to attach themselves to the Oyas and then take only the water they need. In the fall, simply unearth them, brush them off and store them someplace dry for the next year. Even better: GrowOya is a member of 1% for the Planet, a global network that matches businesses which commit at least 1 percent of their total sales with nonprofits dedicated to positive environmental efforts. GrowOya's contributions go to Compass Green, a group dedicated to popularizing school gardens. growoya.com

1. Fall is the preferred time to grow most plants. 2. If you want to plant in the summer, do so in containers so that you can move them around. 3. Most Florida soils are low in organic matter and therefore benefit from the addition of organic matter such as animal manure, rotted leaves, compost, commercial soil mixes, and/or cover crops. 4. Conserve water by using mulch, organic matter, and techniques such as drip irrigation. Make a slight depression at the base of plants to hold water until absorbed by the soil. 5. Young plants need frequent but light irrigation; maturing crops need more water but less often. 6. Plant flowers in the vegetable garden. They provide nectar and pollen that attract beneficial insects.

H

E MAY HAVE ONLY JOINED THE SCHOOL A FEW YEARS AGO, BUT First Sergeant David Torres has made a big impression on the students of West Broward. His JROTC drill team is gaining fame in certain circles for their stellar performances. In fact, this year, they placed first overall in all local competitions and placed first overall at the county level, making them back-to-back champions at the county level for 2016 and 2017. They went on to compete at the state level against 110 other schools from across Florida, placing in most of the 17 events they entered. We caught up with Torres to talk success, motivation and just exactly what it means to be in a drill competition.

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, WHAT DOES A DRILL COMPETITION ENTAIL?

A drill competition can consist of up to 19 different events. Drill is a marching unit that performs routines based on military drills. These teams perform with both armed and unarmed rifles. It's very demanding, mentally and physically, for young adults which include both male and female teams.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS WITH THE WEST BROWARD TEAM?

The keys to my success with West Broward team has been first and foremost the students themselves. They are very disciplined and dedicated to any team they join. We spend numerous of hours practicing after school from November to April.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PART OF JOINING WEST BROWARD?

For me the best part of joining West Broward has been the support the schools administrators, parents and students themselves have provided, which has helped me dedicate so much time to help them be successful in everything they do without compromising the most important part of their life, which is their academics.

Kaylin Dighton, PA has joined EZPediatrics and will be working along side Dr. Zambrano. Dr. Zambrano and EZ-Pediatrics welcome Kaylin to our team.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE THE KIDS TAKE AWAY FROM THEIR DRILL EXPERIENCE?

I would hope that they learn to be more focused and attentive to details as well as learn discipline, leadership and to manage their time wisely, with hopes of them becoming successful in anything in their life.

Details: This year’s LUNG FORCE Luncheon will honor Vann Padgett, Senior Vice

President of Real Estate & Leasing Operations of the Las Olas Association and Pauline Grant, formerly of Broward Health. “After being smoke free for 12 years, I was diagnosed with COPD in 2007. My doctors and surgeons relied on the many years of research by the American Lung Association to restore me to health. I’m very proud of all that we do in the areas of education and lung cancer research as well, and I’m excited to be a part of the LUNG FORCE luncheon as this year’s honoree,” said Vann Padgett. Both Padgett and Grant, will be receiving a Lifetime Legacy honor in appreciation of their years of dedication to saving lives and promoting lung health to fulfill the organization’s mission. “The LUNG FORCE Luncheon is designed to raise much-needed awareness and funds for research, education and advocacy efforts for lung cancer, the #1 cancer killer in men and women. Sadly, only 2% of women in this country cite lung cancer as being a top of mind concern, and we aim to change that statistic in our community,” said Andrea Eastaugh of Tito’s Vodka, who is Co-Chairing with Jenna Ingraham of Breakthru Beverage. Howard Finkelstein, of WSVN 7News' "Help Me Howard, who has been personally touched by lung cancer in his own family, will serve as the master of ceremonies. The event will be hosted on the heels of Women’s Lung Health Week, which is a week-long celebration and lung cancer awareness effort known as Turquoise Takeover. Established by the American Lung Association, Women’s Lung Health Week is the second full week in May and encourages all residents of South Florida to turn turquoise, (the campaigns signature color) and learn more about the detection and treatment of lung cancer. During the Luncheon on May 19, guests will continue to go turquoise as they don their favorite turquoise outfit and enjoy a day of sipping and shopping in the tempting Style Lounge, where designer women and men’s fashions and accessories will be on display at the many pop-up boutiques present. Proceeds from the style lounge will further benefit the LUNG FORCE campaign. There will be a silent auction as well. The style lounge will be complemented by a chic fashion show during the program, starring the organization’s LUNG FORCE heroes and community supporters. The luncheon is presented by the Mautner Charitable Foundation in honor of Jack & Catherine Ward and benefiting the American Lung Association in Florida.

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

H

8 YEARS OF SUCCESS

A True Cognitive School Correcting the 19 Learning Disabilities Access School is committed in providing an environment where students can become independent and where they can learn to think critically, courageously, freely and affirmatively.

AVE YOU SEEN OUR NEW City Center yet? Our grand opening was held last month to the cheers of the many who have worked so hard to see our vision become reality, our wonderful residents and dedicated businesses. We welcome you all to come by, attend a special event or performance in our Great Hall, enjoy an exhibition in “The Frank” art gallery, or stroll in our one-acre plaza. May is an exciting month for us here in Pembroke Pines. We encourage everyone to come out to our parks for the 7th Annual National Kids to Parks Day on May 20, 2017. There will be free and fun activities at several park locations throughout the city. Camp registration will be in full swing for the summer months. From soccer, to art and drama, our camps offer children of all ages a chance to have fun, learn and just be kids in a safe environment. Our last free Jazz in the Pines concert before the summer break begins will be on Sunday, May 21, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the William B. Armstrong Dream Park, located at 1700 NW 160 Ave. (Dykes Road). This is a perfect time to enjoy the sounds of jazz in a beautiful setting. Bring blankets and chairs for seating, relax and appreciate this picturesque park. And, we are almost upon Memorial Day. While many think of this day as the start of Summer, it really is a day set aside to honor all the men and women who have died in military service for our country. On Monday, May 29, 2017, the City of Pembroke Pines will hold a day of remembrance from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Fletcher Art and Culture Center, located at 7900 Johnson Street. This is a solemn occasion to which we hope everyone will attend to honor our brave men and women in the military. These are just a few of the many activities and programs we offer throughout the city. Be sure to check out our Facebook page, YouTube channel, Instagram, City Connect newspaper and website (ppines.com) for more information. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor, Frank C. FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings Miramarians… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR

F

IRST I WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE OUR ELECTED Commissioners Winston Barnes, Yvette Colbourne and Maxwell Chambers on being re-elected to the City of Miramar Commission. I look forward to us all working together as a commission for the best interests of the residents of the community. We have a lot to be proud of and much more work to do for our great city. So it’s time for us to get to work! During this year’s legislative session I had the opportunity to visit with state legislators to advocate for our city on important issues dealing with Home Rule, infrastructure, blasting regulations and where cell phone towers can be placed in our city. I look forward to giving a final report on how our city fared during this legislative session.

I am proud to announce that the Miramar Community Garden was the recipient of Broward County's NatureScape Special Achievement Emerald Award which recognizes businesses, municipalities, schools, government facilities and homeowners that have created and maintained model Florida-friendly landscapes for completed exceptional projects. The Miramar Community Garden is located at 3700 Largo Dr, Miramar, FL 33023, right next to Fairway Elementary and is used to encourage kids to be aware of the importance of eating organic fruits and vegetables and share tips on how to grow and plant them. We recently hosted the Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials in Miramar. Officials from Panama City to North Bay Village, representing over one million Floridians joined together to discuss best municipal practices in addressing economic development, jobs creation, criminal justice reform and professional development. There was great economic impact to the City of Miramar as the hosting of the conference contributed thousands of dollars to our hotels and local businesses. It’s often come to my attention that residents in the west have never explored Historic Miramar and what she has to offer. I am happy to announce the Mayor’s Tour where I will personally escort residents from the west on a tour of Historic Miramar where you will visit the world renowned Ansin Sports complex, the Vernon E. Hargray Youth Enrichment Center, our award-winning Multi-Service Complex, the new Adult Day Care Center and Shirley Branca Park and the Miramar Community Garden. This tour will take place Saturday, June 10th beginning at 10 a.m. The bus shuttle will depart and return from Miramar Regional Park. For more information and to RSVP, please email elaroche@miramarfl.gov Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar

Pet Cloning: Here to Stay? BY DR. MARTA SANCHEZ EMDEN

W

E ALL LOVE OUR PETS AND CONSIDER THEM PART of the family. But, would you be willing to custom order a duplicate of your dog or cat as the end of his or her life approaches? Or, would you adopt a totally different pet instead? Well, it has been a while since the first cloned mammal, Dolly The Sheep, was successfully produced from an adult skin cell in 1996. In the past 20 years the cloning technique has been further developed, and nowadays we have cloned sheep, pigs, goats, cows, ferrets, dogs, cats and horses, among other animals. In fact, cloning is well accepted in some fields, such as the livestock arena. A cloned animal is a genetic duplicate of the original animal that is born at a later time. Although the cloned animal is genetically identical to the original, the temperament is not exactly the same. This is because it is partially determined by genes, In the U.S. pet cloning, even though controversial, is legal. The first pet cloned successfully was a cat, in 2004 in Texas. Since then many dogs and cats have been cloned. Even though pet cloning represents a small market, there is consistent demand for the procedure.

Summer of Fun!!!

Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, a cloning company based in South Korea, pioneered the pet cloning technique, and has already cloned more than 700 dogs successfully (sooam.com). The company has cloned highly trained search-rescue dogs and police dogs for South Korea, as well as highly priced pets for U.S. clients. The average price for a cloned pet is from $100,000 to $150,000. Closer to home ViaGen, a Texas based company, delivered the first U.S. born foal in 2010, and its first cloned puppy in 2016 (ViaGenpets.com). The price for a cloned pet by this company ranges from $25,000 to $50,000 per clone. In addition, they offer a genetic preservation program that allows preservation of adult cells from the original animal with the goal of producing a clone in the future. This company also caters to clients in the UK, where animal cloning is against the law. The sport of polo is the most open equine discipline for animal cloning. Highly priced polo horses are been cloned in large numbers by an Argentina-based company (cretsviewgenetics.com.ar). The company is the world’s leader in equine cloning, having produced so far around 200 cloned foals priced from $80,000 to $200,000 each. But, what does the cloning process involve? First, the cloning company will ship a tissue biopsy kit to the client. A veterinarian will be requested to obtain a skin biopsy the size of a dime from the original pet. This can be obtained under sedation or up to 12 days post mortem if the pet has already passed away. About six months after the

“Concerts Under the Stars” Young Artist Music Series Wraps Up at Bonnet House

BY DINA WEINSTEIN

B

ONNET HOUSE MUSEUM & GARDENS FINISHED THEIR POPULAR “Concerts Under the Stars” series April 6 with the Dillard Jazz Ensemble. The public high school program in Fort Lauderdale that develops student performers into highly-accomplished musicians presented an entirely new repertoire. The series shone a light on a variety of young talent performing opera to contemporary jazz in one of Fort Lauderdale’s darling historic venues. The March performance by the talented Lynn University Vero String Quartet featured classical music of the 18th and 19th centuries. The setting and the music transported attendees back in time. Composed of graduate students - violinist Anh Nguyen, violinist Sing Hong Lee, violist Kayla Williams and cellist Stephanie Barrett - the quartet’s first piece, “Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major “Salzburg Symphony No. 1” composed in 1772, began with the upbeat Allegro movement. In the pensive Andante movement Barrett’s sonorous instrument took center stage. The fading light allowed guests to relax into the tranquil, lush setting while a golden glow gave the waterlily-filled canal alongside the performance tent the feel of a tropical Monet landscape complete with a white swan. The whimsical white and yellow structure of this historic home contrasts with the green fauna. The final Presto movement had a danceable rhythm. Now in its 21st year, the concert series features South Florida talent and runs January through April. Guests are encouraged to come early to enjoy the extraordinary landscaping, view an art exhibit and sip complimentary wine before the concert as dusk falls. Chicago-born artist Frederic Clay Bartlett built the house in 1920 on oceanfront

land given to him and his second wife, Helen Louise Birch, by her father Hugh Taylor Birch, a prominent Chicago attorney, real estate investor and naturalist. For more than 70 years the Bartletts and Birches resided on, sustained and enhanced the 35 acres, their buildings, and decorative contents. Today the estate is a preeminent house museum dedicated to historic and environmental preservation. In January the University of Miami Frost Opera Theater performed and in February the Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artist Program participants sang arias and duets. The Vero Quartet’s second work was the Borodin String quartet, written in 1881. “Borodin is life and love,” said Barrett post concert. Included in a live classical performance is the experience of hearing the musicians breathe and move to the music, chair creaks and all. The Nocturno movement conveyed romance and made one concert-goer remember Mario Lanza’s interpretation of the waltz entitled ‘And This Is My Beloved’ made famous in the movie “Kizmet.”The Quartet imbued the Adagio non lento movement of the “Mendelssohn String Quartet no. 2 in A minor, Op. 13” composed in 1827, with a deep mournful feeling. Violinist Nguyen described the composition as very challenging and technical. A frog’s vibrating call joined in for this final piece that Barrett said, was chosen for its tenderness, which made it special to the group. “Such a beautiful setting,” said cElise Peters, a pianist who was scouting the property for her friend’s daughter’s upcoming wedding. “As a quartet, we’re in love.” said Barrett of the group’s off campus debut. The not-tobe-missed Concerts Under the Stars series begins again next winter. Upcoming events at Bonnet House include classes on birding and plants, workshops on basket weaving and art, exhibitions and a cruise; visit bonnethouse.org for details. River Cruises Aren’t Just For ‘Old’ People BY DEBBIE MARTINEZ

A

S I BOARDED THE PLANE TO BASEL, Switzerland to catch my Viking River Cruise, I swore on a stack of Bibles I would be bored to death among all the old people on that cruise. I’m ashamed to say that was my perception of what a river cruise offered; no casino, no bars, no shows and no pool all equated to boredom. Well as Gomer Pyle would say, “Surprise, surprise, surprise.” I walked onto the Viking Kvasir in Basel to smiling faces and helping hands. I was led to my stateroom, which had a lovely balcony and ample room for my two large suitcases (to this day I still don’t know how to travel light). Eager to explore my new surroundings, I freshened up and headed to the main room of the ship. There I found the one and only bar with guests already ensconced. And lo and behold, they were young. I pulled up a stool and became fast and furious friends with the bartender and maitre d’. So, here is what I found to be one of the many perks of a river cruise- it’s your own floating Cheers. Everyone knows your name. No matter where I went on the ship, I was not only greeted but also engaged in conversation. The staff was always so willing to assist in anyway possible, right down to the pianist who would play well after

his time was up. Ok, I bribed him with a drink but he cheerfully stayed. If you are looking for and expect that big cruise ship feel, don’t book your ticket on Viking because that is not what a cruise like this is about. What it is about is that feeling of being home, it is small without all the distractions, guests will mingle with each other more and the staff is pretty entertaining. They spend time with you and do the little things that you don’t get on a huge cruise ship. For example, one day after an excursion, we all came down the walkway and some of the staff were on the upper deck with a banner that read “Welcome Home” and singing and clapping. This is the type of thing that makes a river cruise so memorable. Traveling alone can have its awkward moments, such as dinnertime, but my maitre d’, Darko, made sure that didn’t happen. He ushered me straight away to a table with women all my age and settled me in. Needless to say, the Pitt girls and I became family on that trip and still stay in touch. Speaking of mealtime, the food was outstanding. The menu was fabulous each and every day down the Rhine. The service was impeccable and my wine glass

was always full. My cruise took me through four countries and nine cities. My first port of call was Breisach, Germany where I disembarked to explore the magical Black Forest. Next stop was Strasbourg, France, which made me feel like I had stepped into a fairy tale. I visited Strasbourg Cathedral and rode the carousel that sits in Cathedral Square. Day four found me at Heidelberg Castle and enjoying traditional German food and music at a tavern in Rudescheim. Day five was spent cruising to Koblenz, Germany where I was completely enthralled by the little towns, castles and ruins that dotted the riverbank. I headed to Marksburg Castle and yet another glimpse into a time gone by. Day six was Cologne, Germany where I was awe struck by the gothic cathedral. Day seven was a drive into the picturesque Dutch countryside to see the nineteen, mid 18th century Kinderdijk Windmills. The next morning I said goodbye to all my new friends and disembarked for three days in Amsterdam (another story for another time). Drifting off to sleep on the plane back to Miami, there was only one thought on my mind. How could I return to my little floating home on the Rhine?

company receives the adult skin cell biopsy, the eight-week old clone pet is delivered to the client. It does sound simple. However, pet cloning is extremely controversial raising debate regarding the morality and ethics of the procedure. Those in favor argue that cloning does not contribute to the dog and cat overpopulation; it facilitates important scientific knowledge to researchers, strengthens the human-animal bond, and does not involve inhumane treatment of animals. Those against the procedure contend that this industry sells a false expectation that the cloned pet will be a complete identical twin of the original pet. They argue that the cloning procedure causes pain and distress on the animals involved, and have extremely high failure and mortality rates. The Humane Society condemns pet cloning due to an already existing overpopulation of animals and the potential for animal suffering. Pet cloning even though commercially available, is still an experimental technology. Many clones are produced that are born in poor health, born with defects, or stillborn. About 12 surrogate mothers need to be impregnated to ensure a successful clone. At rare times when more than one healthy clone is produced, and the client request is for only one clone, what is supposed to be done with the rest? Before considering cloning of a beloved pet, proceed with caution and consider instead saving a life by adopting an abandoned shelter animal. The world for that pet will change forever.
