School is Almost Out!
T
WO MORE WEEKS AND THE 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE OVER. WE are ready to enjoy the summer including our beautiful cities. I don’t know about you but for me this is the busiest month of the year when the kids with their finals, graduations, school trips, proms, parties, tournaments, and competitions are the name of the game, Happiness all around!! So lets get ready for a wonderful summer, on page 30 we have a great article with ideas on where to stay when your destination is your own city. My personal favorite and little secret is the VRBO website, with a big family like ours renting an apartment in front of the beach has been our greatest StayCation. It is time to give back to the community too, in our philanthropist section on page 16, we have a great article on a different way to give back. This past month was great too, we were invited to the new Pines Center to enjoy a night of Rock and Roll featuring the music of Queen, it was fantastic, and if you have not have made plans for May 20th, make sure to go and check out the brand new Pines Center, they will be featuring Cool and the Gang. And since we are speaking of the arts, there is a new art gallery named The Frank right next to Pines Center, so go and check it out. Another important date is on July 4th, when the City of Miramar will be having the grand opening of the Memorial Regional Park Amphitheater with a free concert for everyone. Can’t wait for this great summer to start, Have fun my friends!

STUDENTS EXCEED CANCER FIGHTING FUNDRAISING GOAL! The Student Council from Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School - East Campus, voted early in the school year to raise funds to fight cancer. The students held sales, bake sales, world cancer day and breast cancer awareness fundraisers and planned to participate in the Relay for Life, the overnight 13 hour walk, all in an effort to raise $2,000 for The American Cancer Society. During Relay for Life held at Walter C. Young Middle School East Campus, students and staff set up a cookie booth and sold homemade cookies donated by Chartwells. “There was great camaraderie fostered by this fundraiser,” said PPCES East Campus Student Council Facilitator and Curriculum Specialist Alina Perry-Smith. “Our students were especially proud to see their School Resource Officer William Bucknam participating by driving the famous Pembroke Pines Pink Police Car and leading the walkers around the track.” In total, the East Campus students raised $2,442.00, greatly exceeding their goal. “Throughout the year our students, families and staff members have been supportive. Participating in the actual Relay for Life event was the highlight for us all. We had great fun and enjoyed ourselves all the more knowing we were helping in the fight against cancer.”

4 Tips To Sleep Better During Allergy Season
Pressure Cleaning
S
FalconPressureCleaning.com
PRING IS THE SEASON OF RENEWAL. PLANTS AND TREES START TO rebound from the harsh winter that claimed most of their leaves and vegetation. Birds return from their Southern vacations, serenade us with their morning songs and rebuild their nests in preparation for new arrivals. Unfortunately, there is another renewal that many people don’t look forward to in the spring: the return of hay fever season along with symptoms such as sneezing and sniffling that can give you sleepless nights. According an allergy survey conducted by HayMax , 92 percent of respondents said their hay fever symptoms affect their work, school or daily routine, which includes sleep patterns. “The trick to sleeping well when you suffer from hay fever is to reduce the amount of pollen getting into your body at night,” says Max Wiseberg, creator of HayMax Allergen Barrier Balm. People can tolerate a certain amount of pollen without reaction, he says, but once this amount is exceeded – called the trigger level – hay fever symptoms start to occur. Stay below this level at night, you won’t get the symptoms and your sleep won’t be affected. Go above it and that’s when the trouble starts.

Wiseberg offers a few tips on how to avoid reaching that trigger level, allowing you to rest easy at night. »» Keep bedding and fabrics clean. Vacuum the house regularly, especially beds and fabrics, such as bed covers and curtains, to remove pollen, dust and pet allergen particles. Wash bedding regularly to remove allergens and dry them indoors rather than on a clothes line to prevent pollen particles being blown onto them by the wind. »» Keep the house closed from the outside world. Close windows and use an air conditioner, preferably with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter to capture pollen and dust particles, as well as cool and circulate the air. »» Have a nightly routine before bed. Shower at night before sleeping to remove pollen particles and pet hair from your hair and body. Clear the nasal passages with water, or use a saline nasal spray, to clear pollen from the nose. Finally, apply an allergen barrier balm to the nostrils and around the bones of the eyes to trap pollen, dust and pet allergens before they enter the body. »» Ensure that pets are well groomed. If you own a pet, shampoo it as much as possible to remove pet allergens and pollen particles, or ban it from the bedroom completely. “Loss of sleep because of hay fever is very significant, as it can impact how a person functions the next day at school or at work,” Wiseberg says. “The effect of sleep deprivation on productivity and health losses costs companies billions of dollars each year.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

Earth Week Takes over PPCS-East BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
E
ARTH DAY LASTS ALL YEAR LONG FOR STUdents in the science classes of Lisa Dizengoff, science facilitator at Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School - East Campus. Students learn about the impact a healthy environment has on the earth, its inhabitants, sea and sky. Conversely, they have seen firsthand the impact people have had on the environment, good and bad. “Our students learn how the actions of people, ranging from littering to accidental oil spills, can devastate the earth and its creatures,” said Dizengoff. To further the environmental lessons Dizengoff focusses on developing environmental awareness through interactive and independent education. She sends students home with activity links to work on and share with their families. Recent activities included adopting a piece of the Earth from NASA and working on a coding project from the Made With Code website. Students also recite The Earth Planet Pledge located on a classroom wall: I Pledge Allegiance to the Earth and all the life, which it supports. One Planet, in our care, irreplaceable, with sustenance and respect for all. “Our students develop environmental awareness campaigns, learn the importance of recycling and composting, sustaining wildlife by planting native species, and participate in the annual beach cleanup. They come to a deeper understanding of how the environment affects Science, and vice versa,” said Dizengoff. During Earth Week the student “Stewards of the Environment“ participated in activities to improve their school and neighborhood environments through the picking up of litter, decorating grocery store bags with mindful environmental statements and nourishing the school garden with organic material. “East Campus has a long history of participating and volunteering in programs to benefit the environment. Moved to action by what they see and understand, our students know they can make a
14
difference. Our students are at an important age where developing environmental awareness translates into their wanting to take action and they develop empathy for the environment,” said Dizengoff.
EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES AT PPCS – EAST CAMPUS:
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | May 2017
»» Earth Planet Pledge: Each day began with students reciting, “I Pledge Allegiance to the Earth and all the life which it supports. One Planet, in our care, irreplaceable, with Sustenance and respect for all.” »» Earth Art on Grocery Bags: Students decorated paper grocery bags with Earth Day slogans, quotes and drawings for customers shopping at the nearby Publix (Miramar Commons). This is the third year students have participated in the Earth Day bag event. »» Earth Day Gardening: Students helped protect and restore the planet by planting native flowers, fruits and vegetables in the school's Art in Bloom
Garden. Students used organic fertilizer to help nourish the earth and planted native flowers and shrubs to provide a food source, for birds, butterflies and bees. »» Campus Clean-Up: Every day before the conclusion of Science class, students picked up trash from the school grounds, parking areas and portions of Hiatus Road. Students also held signs stating “Save the Planet! Protect the Earth!” and students chanted, “Clean Up, Pick Up, It’s all UP to YOU!” as they pick up the trash. »» Outdoor Classroom “Film” Raiser: The school participated in a DisneyNature “Film” Raiser for Born in China on April 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Ten percent of the pre-sale tickets were donated toward the construction of an outdoor classroom. “We hope our students’ enthusiasm and concern for our planet, results in their becoming lifetime stewards of our environment,” said Dizengoff.

Victoria Disorbo
A Friend’s Mission CYSTIC FIBROSIS RESEARCH AND AWARENESS
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
BACKGROUND:
Disorbo, 19, is the reigning Miss Florida Teen USA and will represent the state at the Miss Teen USA pageant this summer, but the Lynn University sophomore will take the stage with much more on her mind than evening gowns. Though she had performed as an actress and singer, and even placed in the top 16 in the Miss Florida Teen USA pageant in 2015, the loss of her friend in early 2016 pushed her to take a break from the stage. “I thought I would never compete again,” says Disorbo. “But then one night at 3 a.m. I texted my pageant coach and said I wanted to get back to work. I realized pageantry was a way for me to help others with cystic fibrosis by raising awareness and money to find a cure. When I’m on stage I think: You’re doing this for Julie and for every other cystic fibrosis patient out there.”
DRAWING ON INSPIRATION
Disorbo’s friend continues to be source of inspiration in her daily life as Miss Teen Florida USA, pushing her to find new ways to educate the public about the disease, which causes the cells that make mucus, sweat, and digestive fluids to become thick and glue-like, blocking tubes and ducts throughout the body. Over time, mucus builds up inside the airways making breathing a struggle. The mucus also traps germs and can lead to serious infections and severe lung damage. “Looking at Julie, you would never know she was sick,” says Disorbo. “She even wore heels in the hospital! She was always laughing, even when undergoing painful treatments. No matter how sick she was she always had a smile on her face. She never felt sorry for herself... I learned so much from her.”
65 ROSES
Another way Disorbo is raising awareness is as an author. Her first book, “Sixty Five Roses,” will be published at the end of May… which happens to be Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month. The book is aimed at children, an audience she knew she could have a real impact on. The book chronicles the creative ways children with the disease and their friends can look at its treatments and effects. “If you teach children to appreciate every moment and live everyday as if it were their last then they will carry that through their entire life,” she says. Part of the proceeds from the book (available on victoriadisorbo.com at the end of the month) will be donated to organizations that further research and education on the disease.
PAGEANT PREP
In addition to her duties as Miss Florida Teen USA and her upcoming book release, Disorbo is busy prepping for the Miss Teen USA pageant… and the opportunity to make a national voice for herself and her friend. “I am preparing very rigorously, not just in the gym but mentally and emotionally,” she says. “ I am not just competing for a shiny crown, I'm competing for a voice and an opportunity to impact my community and carry on my best friend's legacy.”
Julie lived a very good life while she was here and contributed so much to the world and to me. I feel like it’s my calling to ensure her legacy lives on.” 16

Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

The Key to Cool B
RISK AIR, INC. HAS THE COOLEST PASSION in town all while drenching their uniforms with sweat to keep you comfortable. Since the age of eight, Brisk Air owner Andy Andres has been climbing into attics across South Florida in the name of client comfort and customer service. The second-generation business owner started out hauling tools for his father; later growing the one-man operation, Andy Andres A/C, and merging with B&B Air Conditioning to create Brisk Air Inc. “It’s been an incredible journey,” says Mr. Andres, who runs the quality 13-employee operation alongside wife Jacklyn. “My father taught me that honest hard work was the only way for people to trust you enough to allow you into their home. That honesty will give you the opportunity to show them your passion to fix, improve, help and serve and is what will ultimately earn their business. Because of my father I have these core values embedded in my heart.” That means his clients, who run from North Miami all the way north to Palm Beach Gardens, turn to Brisk Air for everything from maintenance to complete system overhauls, mini split ductless units and everything inbetween. Brisk Air is "A Company You Can Trust." The AC expert has strong feelings about what those customers can do to avoid the dreaded mid-summer breakdown. Here are his best tips for a chill summer.
KNOW YOUR HOME… AND YOUR FILTERS
Knowing your home and your system is step one for keeping cool. “Every home has different characteristics, different traffic,” says Mr Andres, who works with both residential and commercial customers. “People tend to forget about their AC system until it breaks, but it’s important to continually look at your filter and monitor your electric bill.” He says, the basic hard and fast rule to maintain your air conditioning system: Changing your filter. “Some need to be changed every two weeks, some monthly, some every few months,” Mr. Andres explains. “That’s why it’s so important to pay attention to your home. Electric bills will go up, system efficiency and lifespan will reduce with a dirty filter.” He also advises his clients to pour a cup of vinegar down their drain line when they clean their filter and/or buy a low-cost shopvac to suck the buildup out of their drain line. 20
corners, and in the long run will cost you the most. We’re always there to support and help our customers 24-7 no matter what the issue is.”
GO FOR QUALITY WHEN REPLACING YOUR SYSTEM, IT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT APPLIANCE IN YOUR HOME!
Those looking to replace or repair would be better off looking at the contractor reputation and the company culture and employees, rather than the price. “70 percent of the equipment’s efficiency has to do with the installation, and you don’t want a crazy unknowledgeable person in your home” says Mr. Andres. “Anybody can make the outside appearance look nice, especially if the consumer doesn’t know any better. It’s what’s on the inside that makes all the difference. Do they treat any mildew or mold growth after removing your old equipment. Do they lay drop cloths and go the extra mile to protect your home? Do they use chemical solvent to flush your copper lines, because the old refrigerant (Freon) oil doesn’t mix with the new refrigerant (Freon) oil? Did your tech even check the copper line size for proper sizing? You will lose efficiency and a significant amount of the system’s lifespan if the copper lines are not properly sized? You have to seal the ductwork connection properly or you will have mildew growth.” The above is just the tip of the iceberg. In South Florida your air conditioning is second behind your roof as the most important part of your home. “Looking for the person who will do it for the cheapest price is never a good idea in the long run. You get what you pay for.” Mr. Andres explains that beyond installation, quality companies may charge more because you get more. More reliability, more trained and qualified techs, and more post-sale support. More accessories at the time of installation to help better service and protect your equipment. More insurance. More homeowner coverage with paid workers comp. “Did you know if you have a worker in your home and the company he works for does not supply workers comp, if that employee gets hurt at your home he can legally sue the homeowner? That’s scary,” he says. “Truly permitted work will protect you, not a broken promise with no follow up. Most importantly is the integrity. In the service world cheaper means cutting

LOOK BEYOND YOUR AC UNIT, IT’S THE AIR YOU BREATHE!
Though maintenance to the unit itself may be common complaints to customers, there’s another part of the air conditioning system that doesn’t always draw the appropriate amount of attention: the duct work. “You can have homes that are 40 years old and have had three AC’s installed but they’ve never addressed the duct work,” says Mr. Andres. “We have the best duct mechanics in the industry that will remove your old ductwork and install a properly balanced airflow duct system, to your air conditioning manufactures static (air flow resistance) pressure design to get the performance you paid for with your new high-efficiency equipment. Duct work all sealed to FPL’s Energy Conservation Guidelines.” Adds Mr. Andres, “ Remember, it’s easier to get cheaper, than to get a job done right. It’s what your family will be breathing, make the best decision for your indoor air environment and its quality. Brisk Air offers complete home UV Air Scrubbers to help keep your equipment operating at peak efficiency and your home germ and odor free.”
KEEP IT COOL.
One of the worst things South Floridians can do according to Mr. Andres is to shut down their AC when they leave for the day. “The humidity builds in your home and when you get back and turn it down, it has to remove all the humidity in the air before it lowers the temperature,” he says. “It’s going to run consistently for five or six hours before it starts bringing the temperature down.” Mr. Andres also explains that when the AC is off microorganisms and calcium in the drain line will begin to harden and clog your drain line more frequently. “Leave it at 78 or 79 degrees. It’s more efficient… and more comfortable.” Welcome to your full service Air Conditioning Company. We promise You Will Feel the Brisk Air Difference! NOTHER HURRICANE SEASON IS UPON US. NOW through November 30, 2017 we should all be vigilant and prepared for any possible storms. The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be less active than a year ago, however it only takes one storm to cause damage. A total of 12 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes are expected this season. Please take the time to prepare now. Although South Florida has not experienced a major hurricane since 2005 with Wilma, we should never be complacent in our preparations. It’s important to take into account all hazardous scenarios. Have a plan, make arrangements and start taking care of any landscaping issues now. The City of Pembroke Pines Emergency Management Team has developed a plan of action that deals with situations before, during, and after a hurricane or storm. So, should the City encounter a direct impact from a hurricane, the goal is to quickly stabilize the situation and provide immediate assistance to residents and businesses. You can always get up to date information on the City of Pembroke Pines’ Facebook page at facebook.com/cityofpembrokepines. We will play a critical role in ensuring that correct and timely information is shared with residents. The City’s website at ppines. com also shares important information about preparation and what to do right before, during and after a storm. I’d like to congratulate the winners of the Great Yard Awards Contest. We will be honoring the winners at the June 7, 2017 Commission Meeting. They are: Linda Schainberg from District 1; Cathy and John Whitt from District 2; Erno Rosa and Mary Zappia from District 3; the Secret Garden @ Century Village from District 4; and Joseph Zappia from the District At Large. Their yards are magnificent. And, I’d also like to take a moment to humbly brag that Pembroke Pines, according to a new WalletHub report, has ranked No. 3 on WalletHub’s “2017 Best Cities for Hispanic Entrepreneurs.” The survey compared the 150 largest U.S. cities across 21 key metrics, including Hispanic entrepreneurship rate, Hispanic income growth and share of Hispanic-owned businesses. As always, please feel free to contact me at 954-450-1020 or fortis@ppines.com. Again, during this hurricane season, I urge you to not wait for a storm to be upon us - be vigilant and prepare for any hurricane emergencies. And please stay safe this summer. FROM THE MAYOR
Greetings Miramarians… BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR
M
IRAMAR DOES IT AGAIN WITH COMCAST AND Apotex Inc., two Fortune 500 companies in our great city. These two businesses are thriving with innovation, are community-oriented and are helping to create new and exciting job opportunities for residents. As a city, when we have great companies invest in Miramar, not only does it make Miramar a great place to work, but a great place to live as well. Comcast specializes in global media and technology with primary targets in Comcast Cable and NBCUniversal. It made a significant expansion of its Customer Care Center by bringing business to Miramar and creating 600 new jobs which focus on improving creating a culture determined to exceed the expectations of its customers by providing quality service. Apotex Inc., is the largest Canadian owned pharmaceutical company. The building of its new manufacturing and packaging facility will create at least 150 positions in our great city. It will be the biggest manufacturing project in South Florida once the project is completed in early 2019. Miramar will be home to Apotex Corp’s U.S. headquarters and the U.S. offices for Apobiolgix. Apotex's new expansion in Miramar is the largest investment the company has made in the United States. Establishing more opportunities for high paying jobs in Miramar is an important task. Every opportunity is imperative in order to help improve the lives of residents in the city of Miramar. Having Fortune 500 companies make Miramar their home assists in creating a better today and a brighter tomorrow for Miramar’s residents. It also provides a great opportunity for our youth as they attend our excellent schools in preparation for their future. As the school year comes to a close and we enter into the summer, don't forget to take a moment to enjoy what the city of Miramar has to offer. Check out the city's website at miramarfl.gov to stay up to date on the many wonderful community events coming your way including the opening of the Amphitheater for Fourth of July, 2017. Located at Miramar Regional Park, the venue holds 5,000 with 3,000 covered seating and the remaining 2,000 in the open grass area. IRED OF THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD OF MIAMI’S ART GALLERIES? ART Basel too big and impersonal for you? Well, treat your senses to a place that is not too far from home and absolutely amazing. The art gallery scene in Charleston, SC awaits you. So, a girl walks into a bar (it sounds like I’m going to tell you a joke but this is really how it happened.) I was sitting at the bar at The Vendue and in walked a local artist that made every woman in the place swoon. Meet Stephen Elliott Webb. Once I found out what he did, I quickly engaged him to be my gallery tour guide so I could get an insider’s peek to all the fabulous galleries. More on Stephen later as I Stephen Elliott Webb in his studio. like to save the best for last. A few weeks later, with a very comprehensive itinerary in hand, we met to begin our walkabout; with more than 50 galleries in Charleston, I’m sure he was hard pressed to pick a handful for me to visit. So, let’s get started. The first gallery was Helena Fox Fine Art. She is a fourth generation art collector and her gallery carries 20 artists in the American representational style. Along with the works of nationally- and internationally-renowned artists, the 22K gold jewelry of Sarah Amos also calls the gallery home. Next on the list was Ann Long’s gallery where I browsed 25 artists of modern art and classical realist works. The next stop will prove very interesting for Miamians as Rebekah Jacobs has a high-end vintage photography gallery with quite a bit of Cuban inventory, which you can browse on the Internet. Definitely worth your time. The next three are my favorites. The John C. Doyle gallery houses Mr. Doyle’s works of realism and impressionism. It just so happens, Mr. Doyle and Guy Harvey (for all you Florida fans) were friends and there is one original sport fishing painting left and it is for sale at the gallery. If you can afford the price tag of $75,000, it would be one to have in your collection. Blue Cuban Seas is one of my favorites as it features Hemingway’s boat with a Marlin jumping over it. If you favor the surreal realm, than Robert Lange Studios has to be a must see. Run by a husband/wife team, all the artists have a tie to Charleston and you can actually go upstairs and see Robert work. Once I was up there, I really didn’t want to leave as I became totally transfixed at watching him. Jealousy is one word that came to mind due to the fact he made creating look so effortless. “There is no right or wrong way to be an artist,” he told me. Clearly the man has not had the privilege of seeing my “paintings.” One last stop before heading to Stephen’s studio and that was at the Principle Gallery. Walking through the front doors, I was struck with the elegance of the space and felt myself slow down in order to take in all the beautiful paintings. Frank Russen, who is the director of the gallery, recently came from Naples. Clearly it is Naples loss, as Frank has brought his extensive knowledge base, fabulous ideas and personality to the gallery to make it one not to be missed on an art walk. As I mentioned earlier, I have saved the best for last. Stephen walked me over to Mitchell Hill Gallery to show me his work and then over to his studio so I could get a first hand look at how he turns an ordinary canvas into a spectacular piece of art. I was completely amazed how he could take watercolor, latex, acrylic and oil paint along with glue, gesso, enamel, salt and soap and create something any South Beach condo would be proud to hang on its walls. “The lawlessness of abstract art is truly therapeutic. All chains are cut and the artist’s mind can run free.” And so Stephen’s words rang true for me, for as I looked at piece after piece, I swear I could feel the ocean breeze floating through open balcony doors. Hotels aren’t always the perfect choice for families traveling with large groups or those who have special needs. Sites such as Homeaway, VRBO and Airbnb offer great options for renting homes or apartments that can satisfy the needs of every traveler from the budget-minded to the luxury seeker. So how to choose a rental? Here are five things to remember when browsing your options… 1. Input your dates. Rates in popular vacation areas can change almost weekly, depending on the time of year or any holidays that may fall during that time. By inputting your dates from the beginning you’ll not only getter a clearer picture of what homes will cost, but it will help narrow the field significantly based on what’s already rented during that time. By the same token- searching various combinations of days or weeks (staying a full week versus four or five days) can sometimes yield a better rate in the big picture. 2. Read the details. And that means every detail. A home that states it can sleep seven may simply be a two bedroom with some pull-out couches. Most descriptions will give a detailed and clear picture of where bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas are located as well as what types of furniture, accessories and beds are in each. It’s no fun to show up expecting a King-size bed and ending up sharing a twin with your significant other. 3. Read the reviews. Most sites will have thorough reviews from past renters, making it easy to spot the homes that are popular… and those that aren’t. Reviews can tell you a lot about the cleanliness of the house, the amenities it offers and the location. They can also usually give you helpful hints about area attractions, restaurants and shops. 4. Do your homework. Don’t rely just on reviews, especially when it comes to location. Doing a simple Google Earth search can help give you a good idea of what’s around the home and how close (or far away) neighbors are. Make sure to reach out to friends and/or family in the area to check location as well or do a quick Facebook post to get free and helpful advice from your circle of friends. 5. Get a clear contact. Whether it be the owner, a property manager or a housekeeper, be sure to know who to contact in the area with any issues or problems. Most owners or property manager's will be happy to give you a cell number as well as lists of what to bring and where to go in town.
