Eighth Annual Mayor’s Kids Day Takes Over the Pines

S

UMMER FUN CAN BE EXHAUSTING, especially for the 1,000 plus Kids who participated in the Eighth Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day event hosted by Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis Presented by Baptist Medical Plaza of Pembroke Pines, the fun-filled day began at 7:00 a.m. when kids 15 years and younger traveled all over Pines, visiting participating businesses who hosted games and gave away prizes, an assortment of free items from gifts and kids meal coupons to food samples, including milk shakes, fresh fruit and bundt cakes. Fifty kids were given a free pass from Mayor Ortis to see the Pirate Island Show at The Frank. Pembroke Pines businesses also provided bounce houses, story time, a wacky photo booth, free haircuts, chicken nuggets, free Zumba, self-defense and dance classes, free swimming, tennis and golf, choo choo train rides and so much more. New this year were activities at the newly opened Charles F. Dodge City Center where the first 150 kids in line received goody bags and each kid was entered in a raffle to win “Shopkin Live” tickets in the Great Hall. During the lunch with the Mayor, kids line danced and showed off their moves to tunes played by DJ Joseph Sarli. “Mayor’s Kids’ Day is my favorite day! Our young residents have a wonderful time being Kids in our great City of Pembroke Pines,” said

Mayor Ortis. Kids enjoyed hamburgers, hotdogs and delicious cake from Publix. During lunch, kids met and posed for photos with mascots Plateosaurus from Publix, “Cosmo” from Bright Star, “Mr. Cone” from Menchies, “J.J.” from Judy’s Bath and Boutique, Mr. Mustache from Fotolaughs and the Seahawk from Broward College. Pembroke Pines Police Officer Andrew Feldman and Pembroke Pines Fire Fighter Rick Scopa passed out pencils, helmets and stickers. Kids played City Trivia games for prizes and ten lucky Kids won a chance to enter the BrightStar Money Machine, a wind tunnel of prize coupons and cash. “Our Pembroke Pines Mayor’s Kids’ Day event could also be called Best Day Ever for Kids. We are now in our eighth year and the businesses wanting to participate continue to grow. Businesses love this event because it introduces them to Pembroke Pines residents and Kids loved going to stores and receiving so many free items,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines.“ Mayor’s Kids’ Day was made possible in part thanks to the sponsorships and donations from Mayor’s Kids’ Baptist Medical Plaza Pembroke Pines, BrightStar Credit Union, Subway and The Blattman Group, Petland Pembroke Pines, Publix Supermarkets, American Pediatrics Dental Group, Naidu Orthodontics, Whole Foods Market, Pembroke Lakes Mall, Menchies and Subway.

The award recognizes mayoral leadership in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in America’s cities, focusing on the leadership, creativity, and innovation demonstrated by the mayors. This year’s winning cities were selected by former mayors from a pool of over 150 applicants. The City Center Creative Placemaking Project incorporated Community Engagement Design Activities and Innovative Arts Program Planning in the development of the new Charles F. Dodge City Center cultural complex and its arts venues. “It took more than a decade of community visioning and planning, and a lot of dedication and perseverance, but we achieved our goal of creating a phenomenal City Center Cultural Complex for all to be proud of,” said Mayor Ortis. “We are very honored to received recognition for this project.” The Charles F. Dodge City Center is home to Pembroke Pines’ City Hall, City Commission Chambers, a Great Hall performance space, and The Frank Art Gallery. The facilities all face a one-acre Plaza that is designed to provide open space and outdoor performance opportunities to the city’s residents. City Center also serves as the cornerstone of Pembroke Pines' new 130 - acre multi use, pedestrian-friendly downtown, which is currently under development. "Our City Livability Awards Program gives us the chance to express our pride in cities’ mayoral leadership in making urban areas cleaner, safer, and more livable,” said Tom Cochran, CEO and Executive Director of the Conference of Mayors. “We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase the innovation and commitment of mayors and city governments across the country." This is the 38the year in which cities have competed for the award, which is sponsored by the Conference of Mayors and Waste Management, Inc. Alex Gonzalez, Waste Management’s Florida Area Public Affairs Director, presented the City Livability awards during the annual luncheon in Miami Beach. Outstanding Achievement Awards were given to five cities with populations of 100,000 or more: Irvine (CA), Gresham (OR), Phoenix (AZ), Pembroke Pines (FL), Port St. Lucie (FL) -- and five cities with populations of less than 100,000 — Aguadilla (PR), Doral (FL), Dubuque (IA), East Orange (NJ) and Greenville (MS).

Miramar Celebrated America’s Independence Day With New World-Class Amphitheater

T

HOUSANDS GATHERED TO CELEBRATE THE grand opening of Miramar’s new, world-class Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park on Tuesday, July 4th. Among the celebrants were City of Miramar’s Mayor Wayne M. Messam, Commissioners Maxwell B. Chambers, Yvette Colbourne and Darline B. Riggs. They were joined in part by Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief, West Park’s Vice-Mayor Brian Johnson, Pembroke Pines Vice-Mayor Angelo Castillo, Lauderhill Commissioner Ken Thurston and several other dignitaries. The Miramar Amphitheater was the perfect venue for a festive, free community Independence Day Celebration. Miramar resident and local singer, Shelby Williams kicked off the celebration with America’s National Anthem. The concert was hosted by JoMarie Payton from the 90’s hit show, Family Matters, and featured multicultural performers including six-time Grammy nominee Kelly Price, Canadian singer France Joli, Jamaican reggae fusion artist Wayne Wonder, Puerto Rican salsa singer Eddie Santiago and American R&B group Tavares. In addition, attendees enjoyed a variety of food vendors and a massive Kid’s Zone with life-size classic board games. The celebration commenced with a spectacular display of fireworks sponsored by the Memorial Hospital Miramar.

“Today is a historic day, not just for the City of Miramar, but what it really means to the community”, stated Mayor M. Messam. “My vision is for The Miramar Amphitheater at Regional Park to be the facility that provides the community different themed events, such as graduations, car shows and boxing matches among others.” The 5,000-seat capacity amphitheater is part of Miramar’s push to be a premier entertainment destination with a welcoming and inclusive approach to multicultural artists and the public. The City of Miramar will continue to partner with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau on initiatives that position the City as a place for multicultural tourism in South Florida.

The City of Miramar offers Ansin Sports Complex, Shirley Branca Memorial Park, Miramar Cultural Center | ArtsPark and now the new The Miramar Amphitheater at Regional Park as sport and cultural entertainment assets within the City. All of them are easy to get to from Miami to Palm Beach and draws from over 6.7 million people across the region. To learn more about the City of Miramar, visit www.miramarfl.gov.

STEAM Learning for Preschoolers

I

T’S NO SECRET THAT SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ARTS AND math (STEAM) are all important subjects in education, but what about in early education? While some of these topics may seem too complex for preschoolers to grasp, child care providers and parents can start laying the foundation for certain STEAM-related skills and concepts earlier than you may think. The key is introducing the right activities at the right time.

At Primrose School of Miramar, children learn and practice STEAM concepts — as well as concepts in language and literacy, social studies, music, physical development, character development and life skills — continuously throughout the day as part of the Primrose-exclusive approach called Balanced Learning®. While STEAM often provokes thoughts of science experiments, building blueprints or video games, for young children, STEAM looks more like the following:

No wonder the atmosphere is electric.

»» Science – Encouraging children to investigate and answer their own questions. »» Technology – Refers to using simple tools like crayons, rulers and magnifying glasses, as well as more complex ones like microscopes and computers. »» Engineering – Helping children recognize problems and test solutions to them. »» A rts – Fostering creativity and allowing children to illustrate concepts they are learning. »» M athematics – Helping children explore numbers, but also patterns, shapes, organizational skills and much more. There are many reasons to teach STEAM in preschool. STEAM skills are transferable across other subjects. Process skills, which include making observations, hypothesizing and critical thinking, are key components of STEAM. These skills help young children grasp math and science concepts early in life, but can also be applied to other subjects and more complex concepts later on. It’s also essential to engage children in STEAM subjects early since they are becoming increasingly important in today’s world. Incorporating STEAM learning into daily classroom activities, rather than using a kit or focusing on it during certain times of day, allows children to better connect with these concepts. The Primrose Balanced Learning® approach is integrated, meaning every skill and concept taught is reinforced through a variety of different activities and guidance from teachers. For example, plants may be explored through free play, books, art, discussion and more, while Primrose teachers ask probing questions and share information along the way to guide and extend children’s thinking. This ensures each child has many opportunities to connect with the subject matter regardless of how he or she learns. The Primrose Balanced Learning® approach is guided by the latest research and established early education philosophies to ensure the best possible learning environment for children. Children are introduced to new skills and concepts when they are developmentally ready, which helps learning come more naturally. Each theme is also explored for a week or more so that children can learn at their own pace. Whether Primrose children are investigating STEAM subjects, exercising language skills or learning about honesty, every Balanced Learning® lesson is wrapped in fun, meaningful experiences designed to help all children reach their full potential. FEATURE

A Year in Review M

ONTESSORI SCHOOL OF MIRAMAR IS celebrating its first academic year! We sat down with Head of School, Mr. Ammir Vayani to see how it went.

CONGRATULATIONS ON COMPLETING YOUR FIRST ACADEMIC YEAR.

I would like to begin by thanking the residents of the City of Miramar and Pembroke Pines for their trust and support over the past year. It has been a wonderful experience establishing a relationship with many of the families in the community.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE WAS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT DURING THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR?

Our accomplishments this past year can be summed up into two words: our children. The students in our Primary program (3-6 years old) excelled incredibly. The achievements in Language Development, Sensory Development, Mathematical Cognition, Science and Cultural Immersion were astonishing. The students were engaged in a comfortable and socially interactive environment.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE WAS YOUR GREATEST INSIGHT?

Our greatest insight came from discussions with many of the prospective parents, which drew us to the realization that many of the “cookie cutter” models of early child care available in the area demonstrated a restrictive approach to toddler development (1 -2.5 years old). In our discussions, it was discovered that many other programs offered small classrooms (environmental space) cloaked in small group sizes. What was often missed was that such limited environmental space constricts the movement of toddlers. Scientific evidence indicates that children need movement for proper cognitive development. In fact, recent studies show that adults benefit from increased cognitive processes in work environments, by having stand up desks or from moving around in their office spaces. Young children benefit greatly in Montessori environments by having the capacity for movement within an environmental design that advocates “freedom within limits.” Discipline is not taught by limiting the environment, but rather by structuring the environment so that students learn to care for the environment, themselves and their classroom community.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE WAS YOUR GREATEST LEARNING EXPERIENCE?

Our greatest learning experience arose from our fundamental principle and commitment to the individualized and child specific approach to education. Often times, in most early care environments, a Director has to wear many hats and take on many roles. The growth of the School required that we revisit our institutional commitment to curriculum integrity and quality of care. Upon review, we felt that a slight adjustment was called for to better serve our student and parent population. We are happy to 20

Mrs. Chavez, the New Director of Curricula, with a child.

welcome Mrs. Ashly Chavez as our Director of Curricula to the Administration. Mrs. Chavez has a Masters in Education, specializing in Montessori Instruction. Mrs. Chavez holds an American Montessori Society Credential in Early Childhood Education and has held a Director position in an Infant-Toddler Montessori School. To learn more about Mrs. Chavez and other members of our administration and teaching staff please feel free to visit our website at swmontessori.com. We are proud to have a highly skilled and diversified administration and teaching staff, so that we are able and willing to meet the needs of the students, parents and community at large.

ANY FINAL THOUGHTS?

I would again like to thank the residents of the city of Miramar and Pembroke Pines for their support. I would also like to invite all parents to come take a tour of our School, and to learn more about our school at swmontessori.com. I believe parents will be pleased to find that we provide a quality balance between education and nurture, including a complimentary organic meal plan for all students (meal plan is not factored into tuition costs), all at a price point that is quite affordable.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE NEW AND EXCITING THINGS THAT STUDENTS AND PARENTS CAN LOOK FORWARD TO FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR?

There are several new and exciting concepts that both students and parents will enjoy and benefit from next year. The two that stand out the most is the launch and establishment of our enrichment programs that will alternate on a quarterly basis. These programs will include foreign language development, structured music courses, athletics and fine arts. The second is the launch of our Parent Involvement - Education Program.

BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

I

T IS WITH GREAT PRIDE THAT I announce that the City of Pembroke Pines was awarded the “Outstanding Achievement Large City 2017 City Livability Award” in support of the Creative Placemaking at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. The award was presented to the City at the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 85th Annual Meeting in Miami Beach. The award recognizes mayoral leadership in developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in America’s cities, focusing on the leadership, creativity, and innovation demonstrated by the mayors. This year’s winning cities were selected by former mayors from a pool of over 150 applicants. Also during the United States Conference of Mayors 85th Annual Meeting, I was honored to host a Small Business and Entrepreneurship Task Force meeting at the Mayor’s Café. Small businesses are the lifeblood of any city. We discussed strategies to help small businesses, and got advice on how small businesses can grow in today’s economy. This is an important issue for all residents in all cities because small businesses not only meet our local needs and those of larger businesses, they create jobs and provide opportunities for others to succeed financially. I encourage everyone to please support their local businesses. In a few weeks families will be making the transition from the lazy days of summer to the 2017-2018 school year. It’s a time when parents often breathe a sigh of relief, and students and teachers anticipate new beginnings and new challenges. It’s also a time when motorists should slow down and proceed with caution in school zones, stop for buses and be alert for children walking in the street or biking to school. Parents can help by teaching their children safety rules, and supervising young children as they walk or bike to school or as they wait at the school bus stop. And, students should practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus, and riding the bus. If walking to school, they should learn and practice the safety rules for pedestrians, cross at crosswalks, obey all traffic signs, traffic lights and safety patrol instructions. Although the summer is starting to wind down, I hope everyone still gets a chance to take some time to relax a bit and enjoy all the amenities the City of Pembroke Pines has to offer during our summer months. I encourage all Pines residents to visit the Recreation & Cultural Arts web page at ppines.com, check our calendars, and visit our Facebook page at facebook/cityofpembrokepines for exciting events and programs that are planned for the coming months. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. From your Mayor, Frank C. FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings Miramarians… BY MAY WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR

M

IRAMAR IS KNOWN FOR ITS THRIVING AVIATION business sector and is the home of Spirit Airlines corporate offices. It services the aviation sectors by providing aviation management and maintenance services. To expose our youth to this rapidly growing industry, the Miramar Summer Aviation Academy was created. The Aviation Academy provides an opportunity for middle and high school students to be exposed to careers in aviation. For example, air traffic control, pilot, aviation management and drone operating to name a few. This year’s camp was very successful. Adventure soared sky high as youth in grades 5th-12th took part in the City of Miramar’s Summer Aviation Academy. Over 100 Students were given the opportunity to experience the wonderful field of aviation. The Summer Aviation Academy was held on July 18th and the 25th where 35 lucky participants were selected from the group to attend a behind the scenes tour of the Miami International Airport on July 20th and the 27th. Partnering with SAFEE Flight allowed us to generate new avenues for our children by bridging the gap to exposing our youth to career options in Miramar’s thriving aviation industry. SAFEE aims to connect South Florida youth and the community to all that the field of Aviation offers. The Summer Aviation Academy also partnered with Aero Accessories, Inc. and the International Aircraft Associates (IAA) grants an opportunity for students to discover and experience aviation in a fun and exciting way right here in Miramar. Aero Accessories, Inc. is housed in Miramar and provides innovative restoration solutions for a high tech generation of Fuel, Hydraulic & Electro-Mechanical machineries. With years of experience in machinery maintenance and engineering it has continued

to provide advanced and proactive results that generate premier goods and service. The International Aircraft Associates (IAA) is located in Miramar as well and specializes in material and support services. It also serves as an Aftermarket Parts Stockist and Redistributor for Commercial Aviation. Partnering with Aero Accessories, Inc. and International Aircraft Associates (IAA) created a chance for students to learn more about aviation while partaking in a hands-on approach this summer. There are many diverse and interesting careers that the field of aviation offers and students witnessed that through flight and air traffic control simulators, fun educational activities and guest speakers in the field of aviation. As the summer rapidly comes to a close and a new school year begins I encourage both the youth and Miramar residents to take advantage of the many opportunities within the aviation industry. It is never too late to discover a new passion and explore a new dream. HURRICANE SEASON B Y T H E N U M B E R S 18 THINGS TO REMEMBER DURING HURRICANE SEASON 1

STORM SURGE ZONES CHANGE. Head to miamidade.gov to check your address.

PETS NEED PROTECTION TOO. The Humane Society recommends keeping all pets with you during a storm and making sure they have an up-to-date ID tag with a current cell phone number.

LOOK UP. Make sure to check for loose shingles and remove all lawn furniture that could fly up and damage your roof.

TREES CAN BE A DANGER DURING A STORM. Take the time now to trim back any that have large, dead branches and those that are too close to your home and could fall and cause damage.

5 SPEAKING OF TREES: Don’t stress over the palms; they are prepared for wind storms. Simply remove any coconuts or large palm seeds.

10

8

9

GUTTERS should be secured and declogged to prevent water damage.

PHOTOGRAPH ALL VALUABLES in your home and be sure to have a camera charged to take post-storm pics just in case of any damage.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE IMPACT windows make sure to put up shutters. If you don’t have shutters, plywood can be a good option, but could take up to a week of measuring and cutting to put them in place.

12

11

MOSQUITOS ARE STILL AN ISSUE, even after a storm. Walk your property and get rid of any standing water… it’s a perfect breeding ground for the dreaded insects.

15

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE at least a three-day supply of any medications you might need as well as a good amount of batteries and/ or other medical supplies.

CREATE A FAMILY COMMUNICATION PLAN and establish a meet-up location as well as an out-of-state friend or family member to check in with in the case you are separated.

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | July 2017

13

DOCUMENTS ARE THE FIRST thing to get wet and ruined. Make sure you have a safe (and waterproof) space for important docs such as insurance policies, medical records and your pet's veterinary records and always keep copies at a remote location.

TAKE AN INVENTORY of everything in your home… and be detailed! Apps abound to help you organize your information.

14

26

7

6 ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS at Eric’s Outboard Marine the best place for your boat is hauled out and secured on dry land. Boat owners should also always check their insurance policy, make sure the batteries are charged and the bilge pumps functioning.

REMEMBER THAT PHONE LINES can get jammed pretty fast after a storm. Try texting- texts can often get through easier and won’t tie up phone lines needed by first responders.

16

17

18

STAY AWAY FROM ANY WINDOWSfind a room without windows, and take shelter there. If that is not possible, go into a closet.

HEADING INTO HURRICANE TERRITORY? Be sure to check with the airlines for flight cancellations and call your hotel to make sure there are no evacuations in place.

MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE text or email alerting systems for emergency notifications. To find out what alerts are available in your area, search the Internet with your town, city, or county name and the word “alerts.”

23 Foods to Keep Handy

T

HOSE WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH A MAJOR HURRIcane (cough, Andrew) know the sense of dread that sets in when you realize you have no viable meal options and Publix is bare shelves for the foreseeable future. That’s why we turned to nutritionist, and Miami-native, Danielle Marks Williamson of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for a list of healthy foods to keep handy… just in case. TIP: Never underestimate the power of your outdoor grill. Many have a side burner to heat up soups (and coffee!) and anything from pizza dough to defrosted proteins can be thrown on the flames for a quick meal. Just make sure you're stocked up on propane!

3 Steps to Removing an Awning Safely

M

IAMI AWNING AND FLORIDA BUILDING CODE ONLY RECOMMEND TAKING DOWN your awning once a hurricane warning has been issued for your area; meaning that hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected somewhere within the warned area within the next 36 hours. Should that be the case, here are a few steps to removing your fabric awning, courtesy of the Miami Awning experts: 1. We recommend cutting all the ropes that attach the fabric awning to the frame, which can be done above the grommets (brass eyelets). The rope will need to be replaced so do not be concerned about saving it. Be careful not to cut the fabric awning. 2. If your awning is attached to your home or building, after you cut the ropes, roll the fabric awning up to the top of the frame, where it meets the wall. Secure it to frame with tie backs or rope, lashing it down around the ends and middle areas where you rolled it up. 3. If you have a freestanding awning, cut the ropes (same as above). Roll the awning up, if possible, while it is still on the frame or slide it off the frame, pull it to the ground and neatly fold or roll it up. Store the fabric indoors. In the event of a hurricane, failure to take these steps may result in damage to the awning frame and possible damage to your home or building. For more information visit miamiawning.com.

6 Super Summer Snacks

for Those Who Want to be Fit and Fabulous

S

NACKING IS SOMETHING JUST ABOUT everyone does. It’s hard to resist the urge to grab some snacks, especially during the summer when you are having fun and on the run. The problem is that many people grab the wrong types of snacks, which may work against their desire to be fit and fabulous. Far too often, people reach for sugary snacks, which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can lead to health problems such as weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. For those who want to be fit and fabulous this summer, it’s a good idea to pay attention to the snack choices they make. “It’s so easy to eat far too many calories simply because we are grabbing the wrong snacks,” says Coach Sarah Walls, personal trainer and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc., who is also the strength and conditioning coach for WNBA’s Washington Mystics. “It’s important to have healthy snacks on hand at all times and know what to reach for when you do go shopping or you are in a hurry. It may take only a minute to eat it, but done too often it can have lasting consequences.” According to the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, snacks for those who are not very active should be no more than 200 calories. For those who are active, they recommend not going over snacks that are 200-300 calories. They also recommend only snacking when you are hungry and sticking to recommended portion sizes. It’s also important to keep the added sugar in check, considering that the Harvard School of Public Health reports the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar a day, which is around an extra 350 calories.

28

Keeping this in mind, here are 6 super summer snacks for those who want to be fit and fabulous: »» Chia seed pudding – Chia are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and other nutrients. Use the attached recipe to create a simple chia seed pudding that is nutritious and delicious. »» Homemade fruit popsicles – Use an online recipe to make some healthy homemade fruit and veggie popsicles. They will be great on a hot summer day and will give you a fruit serving. »» Yogurt –Opt for varieties that don’t have a lot of sugar. This will give you a boost in healthy bacteria, protein, and calcium. »» Apple with peanut butter – An apple dipped in one teaspoon of natural peanut butter or other nut butter is a healthy snack that will give you protein, fiber, and other nutrients. »» Melons – Summer is melon season and you can’t go wrong with loading up on watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe. They are loaded with vitamins and are refreshing. »» Avocado toast – Using whole wheat toast, spread a half of an avocado on it. That will give you some fiber, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and healthy fats. “Don’t deny yourself the ability to have some snacks this summer, just be sure to reach for healthier options,” says Walls. “Whether you are an athlete or you just want to feel better and look great, keeping healthier snack options in mind will go a long way toward helping you to reach those goals.”

Why Smart Shoppers Buy Refurbished BY ISHAI REINFELD

T

HE INTERNET HAS CREATED AMAZING OPPORTUNIties for people to become smarter shoppers. Understanding where the best opportunities for deals exist can save you a lot of money. One of the least understood ways to save money while shopping online is through purchasing refurbished products. Too many shoppers equate “refurbished” with “used,” but that’s misleading and can cause you to miss out on truly amazing deals.

WHAT IS REFURBISHED?

Simply put, refurbished means any product that isn’t new and in its original packaging. After that, the scope of what refurbished really means covers a wide range. Most retailers have very liberal return policies. If someone buys an item from a store, takes it home, decides they don’t want it, and brings it back to the store the next day, most reputable retailers accept the return, no questions asked. At that point, even though the item may be unopened, or just taken out of its packaging for a few minutes before being returned, it’s no longer considered new. In most cases, retailers won’t put that item back in stock, since it’s not “new” anymore, so it gets returned to the manufacturer, who may repackage the product, check that it’s working properly, and then find another outlet to sell it. That’s where e-commerce sites can jump on the opportunity to bring customers amazing deals.

ARE ALL REFURBISHED PRODUCTS THE SAME?

There are standards about different categories of refurbished goods. A reputable seller should always be clear about what they are selling. Some sample classifications for refurbished goods for sale include: »» Certified/Manufactured Refurbished - Refurbished items that have been certified, tested, and cleaned by licensed third party partners. The item will be in 100% working condition and will usually have little to no wear. If necessary, any defective or "not up to standard" parts will be replaced. »» Refurbished - Item has been cleaned, repaired, and inspected by the supplier to ensure they're in the best condition possible. Might include minor wear and tear, including some cosmetic blemishes, however, item will be in full 100% working condition. »» Used - Previously used items. These items have been inspected to ensure that they are in working condition, however, they will usually show wear and tear to some degree, and would usually not include replaced parts.

WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS?

Generally, purchasing refurbished products should give you all of the same rights, in terms of returns, as purchasing a new product. If you purchase a refurbished Bluetooth speaker, for example, and it doesn’t work, you’re able to return or exchange it just as if you had purchased that speaker new. Refurbished products may also include warranties, that are sometimes equal the warranty on a new product if the product is manufacturer refurbished. This should be clearly explained in the description of the product.

WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?

Being able to find high-quality products that are refurbished gives customers great opportunities to save money beyond buying the same products in new condition. That’s why smart shoppers buy refurbished. Whenever you buy refurbished products anywhere online, be sure that the description of the product is clear in describing the condition the product is in and what that means in terms of its functionality and appearance. Pay attention to warranties and return policies, so there are no unexpected surprises. Ishai Reinfeld is the South Florida-based CEO of Daily Steals, an e-commerce website which offers deep discounts on high-quality products, everything from fashion to electronics.

T SEEMS I HAVE BEEN TRAVELING AROUND THE SOUTH lately so it makes perfect sense that I would find my way to Chattanooga, TN. When “The New York Times” says it’s one of the top 45 places to go, you go check it out. Let’s start with Adam, known as “That Outdoor Guy.” This guy knows everything outdoors and funny to boot so of course he was the perfect match to show me the outdoors of Chattanooga. We started at Point Park, the National Military Park, where I insisted we crawl out on a ledge to get a spectacular view of the river and city. Our next stop was hang gliding. All I can say is what was I thinking (or drinking) when I signed up for this?! Needless to say, I took one look at people jumping off a cement platform high on a mountaintop in a cocoon looking contraption and we were back in the car devising Plan B. Plan B, much to Adam’s chagrin was visiting Rock City. We had passed it coming up and yes, it is a major tourist stop but I wanted to play tourist. He humored me when I said I wanted to follow the music to see where it led but when we found ourselves at the Beer Garden where people were dancing, that’s where he drew the line. “I hike, not dance,” he said as he strutted off to get a beer. The rest of the day was spent at the Bluff View Art District. We had lunch on the patio at Tony’s Pasta Shop and Trattoria and dipped into Rembrandt’s Coffee House for a European style sweet before heading to the sculpture garden. The next stop was a 1905 revival mansion that houses the Hunter Museum. What a fabulous museum with 100 years of architecture and American art. Night was closing in and once again I could hear music in the distance. Adam rolled his eyes when I casually mentioned I wanted to see where it was coming from. Only this time he was pleasantly Picked up a Troll at Rock City surprised when it brought us across a bridge to The Ice Cream Show, an adorable ice cream shop with a patio, swings and a guitarist. Sitting on one of the swings, I felt all was right in the world, Adam was smiling with his big ice cream cone, the stars were twinkling and I was lovin’ Chattanooga. The next two days I enjoyed some of the local eateries. Pizza at Community Pie, drinks at STIR, a craft beer and ping-pong at Clyde's on Main, which is a gastropub in an old auto repair shop and a wonderful dinner of mussels on the patio of Easy Bistro and Bar. I paddle boarded the Tennessee River compliments of L2 Outside and even came across a little Tom Sawyer looking island where I tied up and explored. Staying at The Chattanoogan was a dream and a great way to end each day. It has won “Best of the Best” multiple times and I can see why. The rooms are well appointed, the staff is wonderful and the spa services will meet anyone’s needs. My last night there I grabbed a glass of wine at their upscale bar, The Foundry and moved outside by the fire pit for my last look at the Chattanooga sky.
