Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

UMMER BREAK IS OVER AND EVERYBODY IS GEARING UP TO START the new school year. It was an excellent summer full of activities in the community. It was nice to see the first Colombian Cultural Festival on our own backyard at the Pembroke Pines City Center. Hope to see more of this activities in our community. In addition to that the festivities for the 4th of July weekend were very nice all over Miramar and Pembroke Pines. Check out on page 16, how Jessica Millman and her team, from West Side Dance Studio, have turn their passion into a joy of training the girls in our own community to be the best dancers they can. We also profile an inspirational member our community, Bank of America's Kim Abreu. Her philanthropic journey was initially jump started by her company's dedication to giving back, but Abreu has built on that beginning and gone on to make a lasting homeless community. Enjoy the read.

Pines Welcomes Colombian Cultural Festival
O
N JULY 22, 2017, THE PEMBROKE PINES CITY CENTER HOSTED THE first Colombian Cultural Festival, organized by MMP & Events. The first Festival Cultural Colombiano featured live music performed by bands representing various regions of Colombia as well as folklore dancers dressed in their typical embellished costumes. The Colombian community of Pembroke Pines enjoyed the event by dancing, singing and watching the dancers perform. The festival commenced with the Master of Ceremony Tachuela, a Colombian trovador who, with his comical introduction and original verses, had the audience laughing every time he opened his mouth. Barrio Abajo, which represented the North Colombian region, was joined by Grupo Folclorico Quillami and Carnaval de Barranquilla de USA and had everyone enjoying their folklore music and dances. Ezequiel Cuevas and Maky y su Grupo Naidy representing the Pacific part of Colombia helped the audience reminisce about the beautiful memories of Colombia. Local dance school Cali Salsa Miami represented Colombian style salsa dancing with music mix provided by DJ RAYA. Finally, Jay Zamorano and his orchestra ended the spectacular festival performing many salsa songs from different Colombian Bands. The Vice Mayor for the City of Pembroke Pines Mr. Angelo Castillo presented the organizer of the event, Miyerlandy "Miller" Martinez, a recognition by the city of Pembroke Pines for his leadership in the Colombian community and named the event the official Colombian event for the City of Pembroke Pines. He also awarded Antonio de las Salas for his many years as a folklore musician in the Colombian community. Martinez was honored by the recognition given to him by the City of Pembroke Pine and the Vice Mayor and is looking forward on working on next year's Colombian Cultural Festival. He foresees this amazing festival to draw people from different areas in South Florida.

THE PHILANTHROPIST A person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.
Kim AbreU Senior Vice President at Bank of America
BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
BACKGROUND Abreu’s passion for the community began 25 years ago when the then-credit-analyst at Bank of America took a cue from her employer. “I attribute many of my accomplishments as a philanthropist to Bank of America’s paid volunteer policy, which allows full-time employees up to two workday hours per week to volunteer in the community, something most companies simply do not offer,” she says. After finding inspiration within organizations such as the United Way, Abreu called on her background in real estate to work with Lotus House, Carrfour and the Urban Land Institute. “Giving back grew from there, and through my career, I developed more skills that served the needs of organizations that rely on shoestring budgets to tackle some of our most pressing needs.”
WOMEN ON A MISSION As treasurer of Lotus House and chair of Carrfour’s Construction and Development Committee, Abreu is proud to bring her experience in the real estate finance industry to organizations serving the homeless community. And Abreu says the women who led the organizations (Stephanie Berman and Constance Collins), were influential in her own understanding of the issues facing the homeless population in Miami and how to address them. “I was drawn to their belief that it takes more than just food and a bed to truly end the cycle. It takes holistic, customized services, such as physical/mental healthcare, job training, childcare and education, as well as the foundation and the dignity a home provides to allow a person family time to heal and progress,” says Abreu. “Miracles don’t happen on their own— it takes angels—and I am truly blessed to know these two, as they are forever changing the lives of so many homeless in our community.”
Bank of America has been a big believer in supporting our local communities by allowing associates to volunteer a certain number of hours during the workweek and making it easy for all associates to donate from our paycheck to support nonprofits in our community.” 14
www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | August 2017
A PLACE FOR EVERYONE Working with the organizations has also given Abreu a new understanding of the homeless community. She says it was important that there be no stigma to public housing, and that the developments they build look like any other housing development in the community. She also found herself changing the way she interacted with the residents and gaining a deeper connection to their everyday life. “Homeless people are just like you and me. The vast majority want to be able to take care of themselves and their families but need some help in getting there,” she says. “Before getting involved, I used to avoid eye contact or pretend I did not see a homeless person I passed in the street. Now,I take the opportunity to get to know them better. It is great to see our alumni come back to volunteer and share their stories and see the huge smiles on their faces.”
THE FUTURE As a mother of three, Abreu often involves her kids in her work, bringing them with her to Lotus House and encouraging them to donate toys and clothing to children in need. “Kids can teach us a lot. It is touching to see my kids interact with the kids at the developments,” she says. “They have no pretenses like we do as adults and simply jump in and start playing together.” Moving forward, Abreu is excited about the new Lotus Village, a mixed-use “village” with combined stateof-the-art shelter facilities and supportive services such as a health clinic, day care and wellness center. “Lotus Village is truly a public-private endeavor bringing quality housing, childcare, training, and health care all under one roof with open arms to the community that surrounds it to help and be helped so that the entire neighborhood is lifted.”

WEST SIDE DANCE STUDIO TRAINS THE NEXT GENERATION OF DANCE’S ELITE
O
OR JESSICA MILLMAN, BRINGING DANCE TO Broward County has been a journey filled with passion, persistence and pride. And today, seven years after opening the West Side Dance Studio, the former Miami City Ballet dancer is attracting the best and brightest Broward (and Miami-Dade) has to offer… in both students and faculty. Millman’s desire to bring quality dance training to Broward County stems from her own training. Remembering her frustration with having to travel south to feed her passion for dance as a child, she parlayed her time with MCB and a degree from the University of Miami into a small space in Pembroke Pines. Soon, that expanded into a sprawling complex of five state-of-the-art studios complete with full time viewing windows, Marley sprung floors and walls of windows in the bright and airy second floor. “I knew Broward didn’t have anything like [what I wanted to create,]” says Millman. “I really wanted to bring that level of instruction to the area.” Building on her desire to create a world-class studio, Millman recruited (and continues to recruit) top talent to staff her studio. Today, that includes Miami City
16
Ballet Principal Dancer Renato Penteado, who was named “Best Male Performance” by “Dance Magazine” in 2016 and School of American Ballet-trained Roger Fonnegra, who has performed with major ballet companies around the world. “Many of the WSDS instructors are also still performing professionally. I believe this gives them a better sense of what’s happening currently in the dance world, which inspires our students to dance their best,” says Millman. Ballet levels II-V at West Side Dance Studio train with more than one ballet teacher per week, so they are offered a variety of styles of teaching and corrections. Students also have the opportunity to train in Jazz, Modern, Tap and Hip Hop, so they become well rounded dancers and are prepared to audition in any dance environment. In keeping with her dedication to high-level training, Millman has also invested in her dancers’ health. She keeps class sizes small to ensure proper attention and last year alone, Millman provided workshops with the head physical therapist from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as well as a variety of exercise classes to help build strength and avoid injury. “I’ve been really trying to make sure that even if they’re dancing many hours a week, they’re growing and getting strong and not getting hurt,” she says. Keeping students as her priority also informed her decision to focus on performance rather than competition. The studio’s Company performs throughout the community during the year as well as in a holiday show and recital. “They have to audition for the company,

it’s a very professional experience,” says Millman, who notes this year’s auditions will be held August 26. “They get all aspects. They have the technique side as well as the audition, rehearsal, and performance side.” Moving forward, Millman hopes to continue to attract passionate, dedicated dancers and has recently expanded the studio to include an in-house boutique and online store. “I realized that our students had to travel far and spend a lot to get the proper attire required for dance, so opening West Side Dance Store was a way to offer everyone a chance to be prepared for class, which only continues to help them succeed as dancers. There are so many wonderful professional ballet companies, but there’s also a lot more competition these days,” she says. “At Miami City Ballet I got to experience world-class teachers. I want to bring that kind experience to a local dance studio.” West Side Dance Studio offeres classes for Pre-School thru Adult. The studio is located at 15830 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, FL 33027. For more information, please call 954-399-0409, email westsidedancestudio@gmail. com, or visit wsdancestudios.com. N AUGUST 2, 2017 MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE ATTENDED a dedication and renaming ceremony to honor Pembroke Pines City Commissioner Carl Shechter. The ceremony included the Presentation of the Colors by the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Honor Guard and the Pledge of Allegiance. “My father is so deeply moved to have this building, where he has spent countless hours volunteering in and fundraising for, now bear his name - The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus into perpetuity,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. In brief yet, poignant comments, Pembroke Pines Elected Officials conveyed a deep respect and admiration for their colleague, tinged with emotion and humor. The ceremony concluded with a surprise for Shechter, who will celebrate his 90th birthday on August 4th. A giant birthday cake was rolled out and the crowd sang Happy Birthday! “Although The Center is now officially called the City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, we all know it as “Carl’s Place,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis, who officiated the ceremony. Shechter, a World War II Army Veteran, retired in 1988 from his New York City law firm to the Hollybrook community in Florida with his wife Anita, to enjoy a life of community involvement which ultimately led to his election as Vice Mayor of the City of Pembroke Pines.Through the years, Shechter developed a soft spot for the city’s SWFP Senior Center. Not only did he become The Center’s long time benefactor, raising tens of thousands of dollars for seniors in need of services and programs, Shechter also volunteered countless hours hosting and underwriting Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners that he, his family and friends cooked and served to seniors who would otherwise have spent the holiday alone. In 1995, Shechter began organizing fundraisers, including the “Swing for the Green” golf tournament for the newly opened SWFP Senior Center, which now bears his name. In 2004, he was appointed as Interim City Commissioner from April through September. Two years later, he was elected to his first four-year term to the City Commission and was re-elected in 2010 and 2016. He served three terms as Vice Mayor. “Retirement did not slow Carl down, he has generously given of his time, expertise and resources as a volunteer,” said Mayor Ortis. “Carl’s volunteerism doesn’t stop in the boardroom. For many years, Carl would recruit his family to serve Christmas dinner to seniors who had no family or place to go. He was happy to help others celebrate their holiday.” The list of board and committee positions to which he has been appointed is as significant as it is long. Appointment highlights include the Broward League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities Municipal Service Delivery Council, the Board of Directors of the Broward Regional Health Planning Council, a member of the Information Technology and Communications Steering Committee for the National League of Cities, Vice-Chairman of the Broward County Ethics Commission and Board of Directors of Douglas Gardens Housing, Towers I, II and III. Reflecting upon his life achievements, Shechter is most proud of his close family, his service in the Army during WWII and his hometown of Pembroke Pines. When he retires, Shechter plans to begin phase two of his retirement, traveling with his wife, spending time with his four children and seven grandchildren, golfing, continuing to serve as an Arbitrator for FINRA and fundraising for his Center, The City of Pembroke Pines Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus. FINANCIAL WELLBEING
3 Monumental Financial Mistakes People Make Before They Turn 50
T
HE SAYING THAT YOUTH IS WASTED ON THE YOUNG MAY BE ESPEcially true when it comes to saving for retirement. “Too many people wait way too long to start thinking about how much they will need to finance their retirement,” says Chris Heerlein, partner at REAP Financial LLC and author of “Money Won’t Buy Happiness – But Time to Find It.” “In a way, that’s not surprising. Retirement seems so far away when you’re in your 20s and 30s, and it’s easy to think you’ll have plenty of time to worry about saving later,” he says. “Then before you know it you pass 50, and you realize you missed a great opportunity to take advantage of compound interest.” Heerlein says many young people are making at least three financial mistakes that they likely will rue when it comes time to retire. Those are: »» Not participating in a 401(k). Many employers don’t offer a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, but if yours does you need to participate, Heerlein says. An alarming number of people ignore this savings opportunity that can reap great rewards, especially if you start when you’re in your 20s and faithfully contribute for decades, he says. “And if your employer is offering matching funds, that’s free money,” Heerlein says. “You need to jump on it.”

»» Saving ONLY in a 401(k). While contributing to a 401(k) is great, that shouldn’t be your only vehicle for saving, Heerlein says. “If you are a younger saver, you are putting all your money into a bucket you can’t touch for 20 or 30 years,” he says. And when you do withdraw it in retirement, you’ll pay taxes because the taxes were deferred. That’s why it’s important to put some balance in your portfolio. A good way to do that is with a Roth IRA, a Roth 401(k) or a health savings account. Withdrawing from those Roth funds in retirement won’t result in taxes because the taxes were already paid when the money went in the account. HSA money isn’t taxed if you withdraw it for qualified medical expenses. After you turn 65, you can withdraw it for any purpose, though you will pay taxes on that withdrawal if not used for a qualified expenses. »» Failing to embrace risk. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, plenty of investors lost a substantial portion of their savings. The memory of what happened to them – or to their parents – is still having repercussions. Some people younger than 50 are too conservative with their investments, Heerlein says, so their money doesn’t grow like it could if they took more risks. “I’m not faulting people for that, but what I want to get across is if you are between the ages of 20 and 50, there is no need to panic,” Heerlein says. “Time is on your side. If you suffer a loss, you more than likely have plenty of years to recover before you retire.” Many people nearing retirement probably look back to when they were in their 20s and 30s and wish they could go back in time and make some financial decisions over again. “Most people eventually learn that true financial success requires a lifetime of work, responsibility, and attention,” Heerlein says. “The younger you are when you come to that realization, the better.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

METHOD
1. Get all your ingredients out onto your work surface, weighed and ready to go. Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease the circles of your doughnut tin with coconut oil and set aside. 2. In a large bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients - the flour, baking powder and sugar until nicely combined. Add the chocolate chips and mix in well. Set aside. 3. Over a very low heat, melt the coconut oil. As this is melting, combine the ground flax seeds with the water in a small bowl and let rest for two-to-three minutes. 4. Mix together the melted coconut oil, the mashed bananas, the yoghurt and the water/flax seed mixture, until nicely combined. 5. Next pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. If the mixture looks too dry, please add another spoonful of yogurt. 6. Spoon the mixture into a piping bag and pipe circles of dough into the prepared doughnut tin. Spread evenly. Bake for 13 minutes or until golden brown. 7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. 8. As the donuts are cooling, prepare the glaze by melting the chocolate in a bowl placed over a pan with water that's been gently brought to the boil. When the chocolate has melted, add a splash of almond milk and stir in until dissolved. You may wish to add a splash of maple syrup too if you like. 9. Once the donuts have cooled down, dip them in the chocolate glaze, sprinkle with nuts, cacao nibs or more chocolate chips and enjoy. HE “MOST FAMOUS REINdeer of all” from the longest running and highest rated holiday television special will return live on stage with the critically acclaimed Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical. Back by popular demand following three successful years of touring North America, the world’s most famous reindeer and a holly jolly cast of iconic characters including Hermey the Elf, Yukon Cornelius and the Abominable Snow Monster will help Santa save Christmas. The national tour is a family favorite -- a “holiday staple” (The Boston Globe) and an “utterly charming, top-notch production” (Orlando Sentinel). The tour comes to the Pembroke Pines City Center for two shows on Saturday, December 23 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 11. Tickets are $30-$50 with 100 VIP tickets that include a post-show photo opportunity with Rudolph and one other character. This show is not recommended for children under three years old. In 1964, the beloved stop-motion animated television classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer made its network television debut and has been delighting audiences across the country for over 50 years. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical is a wonderful new way to experience this family tradition,” says producing partner Jonathan Flom. “This show entertains and, at the same time, helps spread the important and timeless message that we should celebrate our differences.” Projections, costumes and characters are faithfully brought to the stage against a backdrop of nostalgic set designs. The 12-foot-plus-tall Abominable Snow Monster is jaw-dropping. The cast brings high energy to classic songs and dialogue, while irresistible and loveable puppets highlight the charming “roughness” from the television show’s stop-motion effects. Flom says, “The familiar story elements from the television special are addressed with a talented cast and puppeteers who help recreate the magic on stage.” Since the special itself is a classic musical, the stage show does not feel at all like an adaptation and audiences are surprised and delighted when they see performances of songs such as “Fame and Fortune” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” that are heard but not performed in the TV special. The story tells the tale of a young Rudolph who, because of the appearance of his bright, shining nose, is excluded from the Reindeer Games. He flees Christmastown and meets up with new friends Hermey the Elf and Yukon Cornelius. After finding The Island of Misfit Toys, Rudolph journeys home, where a snowstorm of epic proportions is threatening Christmas. Can Rudolph rescue his family and friends and help Santa save the holiday? Rudolph’s partnership with PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center continues this year. The show offers a free toolkit to teachers that leverages the powerful messages from the Rudolph story to teach important character values. In addition, a portion of proceeds from sales of the new book, T.E.A.M. Rudolph and the Reindeer Games, will be donated to PACER.

EDITERRANEAN CUISINE HAS GOTTEN A LOT OF ATTENTION FOR its potential impact on cardiovascular health. In fact, newer research in the Moli-Sani Study has added to the mounting evidence that certain food choices of Italians who live in the Molise region correlated with 37 percent fewer deaths during the research than those who didn’t make those choices. “Mediterranean diet” is a catchall phrase for cuisine found in Mediterranean countries; the diet generally features lots of fish and non-red meat sources, extra-virgin olive oil and plenty of fruit and vegetables, with additional flavor coming from herbs and spices, not salt. “There are components of the Mediterranean diet that are good for the vascular system, such as eating whole grains, low-fat dairy, skinless poultry and fish, and focusing on non-animal sources of protein,” said Dr. C. Keith Ozaki, a vascular surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. While researchers are still digging into the science behind these choices, from what we know now, says Dr. Ozaki, patients with vascular concerns would be wise to consider the basics of that cuisine, even if they make some personal adaptations. While there are no magic nutritional bullets, vascular surgeons want their patients to maintain a lifestyle that is associated with vascular health – and that includes eating the right foods. Around the world, other diets similar to the Mediterranean diet have also been associated with better vascular health and reduced deaths from cardiovascular issues.
HERE’S WHAT THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON:
»» Less salt, more flavor. The sodium in salt contributes to high blood pressure, which is a risk factor for artery disease. High blood pressure causes blood to pump harder through the vessels, which stresses and weakens them. The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg of sodium per day as an ideal goal, and no more than 2,300 mg. (TIP – Cut back on salt; perk up flavor with herbs, spices, garlic, onions, vinegars, lemon juice and other favorite flavorings. »» Eat salmon or mackerel. These fish are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which inhibit plaque inside the arteries, reduce blood clots and may increase good cholesterol and lower blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish twice a week. Other high omega 3 fish choices: cold-water varieties like tuna, trout, sardines and herring. (TIP – Fresh salmon can be pricy, but diners can save money by choosing occasional lean cuts of pork and beef, and keeping portion sizes moderate. »» Get protein from beans, legumes and nuts. Plant-based proteins are filling and healthful; think minestrone soup with beans or quinoa with pine nuts. »» Eat more whole grains. Whole grains found in Mediterranean cooking include barley, oats, polenta, rice and couscous. Whole grains have soluble and insoluble fiber, which can help improve blood cholesterol levels by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. Whole grains also are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity and type 2 diabetes. »» Make fruits and vegetables a staple. In Mediterranean cuisine, a rainbow of vegetables and fruits are used in abundance. Not only do fruits and vegetables add vitamins and fiber to the diet, another new study has found that eating three or more servings per day is associated with a significant decrease in developing peripheral artery disease (PAD) and the foods are also associated with fewer heart attacks and strokes. »» Use extra-virgin olive oil in place of other fats. Olive oil, which contains monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), may have important health benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic, MUFAs may lower bad cholesterol and improve the function of blood vessels. They also may help with insulin and blood sugar control, which is good for diabetics.
In the end, said Dr. Ozaki, while eating better will improve the odds of good vascular health, diet is just one factor. Smoking is certainly detrimental to vascular health, he said, and genetics matter too. “Some of the things we said 10 years ago are not considered true now. And years from now, that could happen again. Our real goal is to get the right nutrition to the right patient at the right time of his or her life.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056
