Exceptional Care for Exceptional People Therapies 4 Kids is the leader in Pediatric Intensive Fitness programs for children and adults with neurological disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Stroke. Children’s physical development and movement is linked closely to other aspects of their daily learning. It is influenced by their growing confidence and enjoyment of physical play, by their increasing ability to control their own bodies through movement and by their physical well-being and strength. As children develop physically, they become faster, stronger, more mobile and more secure of their balance, and they start to use these skills in a wider range of physical activities and also begin to become more aware of themselves as individuals. This developing sense of identity is linked closely to their own self image, self-esteem and confidence.

Sports Panel Gives Advice to Young Journalists

S

PORTS JOURNALISTS PARTICIPATING IN THE PANEL DISCUSsion at the Second Annual Journalism Summit hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School discussed and debated the multifaceted issues facing teen journalism students in school and sports. In advance of the summit, students prepared questions ranging from technology in the media to interviewing and techniques for covering the news in today’s world. The overriding advice from the four panelists was to use every experience and opportunity they have in high school -- from a teacher profile to an investigative piece -- as a learning experience. They shared how they have learned from career challenges and experiences, as well as a few funny stories. The panelists also discussed the value of a journalist who does his/her homework, properly researching, fact checking and reporting in an unbiased manner as well as addressed was the importance of being spontaneous, flexible, meeting deadlines, and staying on top of issues and technology. “Students were interested in stories as they related to teens in sports such as the one relayed by Bruce Silverman, who used his experiences as a broadcaster to tell the students to find their voice and never give up,” said Faran Fagen, Newspaper/Yearbook adviser and department chair of Electives at Pembroke Pines Charter High School. The panelists spoke of about evolving from a selfconscious teen to a confident professional and how that confidence was gained through their individual life experiences. They also emphasized how treating people with respect and honesty helps build “go-to” relationships in the sports world. It was pointed out to the students that learning never stops; they must continually hone their journalistic skills to separate them from their peers. Nearly 100 students from the PPCHS Yearbook, Newspaper, Digital Publishing and Journalism classes participated in a Question and Answer period following the Town Hall style Journalism summit. “The goal of our Journalism Summits are to help students realize that whatever age you are or profession you are in, there will always be unpredictable days, some exciting and some not,” said Fagen. “A journalist working in the field has to meet his/her obligations including meeting deadlines in a 24-hour news cycle regardless of the unexpected including power outages.”

5 QUESTIONS WITH…

Miguel Licero of LinkedIP

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

HOW DID YOU GET INTO VOIP?

F

OR MIGUEL LICERO, ONE GIFT SET HIM ON the path to success. “Since I was a little kid, thanks to the first computer my parents gave me at eight, I became fascinated about what technology can do to enhance our quality of life,” he says. Now the owner of LinkedIP (“We call ourselves ‘South Florida’s #1 Choice for Award Winning Integrated Communication Solution for businesses.’”) Licero brings his unique talents for tech problem solving companies across size and industry. “We provide information technology and communication solutions that act as a tool to grow business, particularly, small and midsize,” says Licero. We sat with the business owner to learn more about his gift of innovation, the beginnings of VoIP and his not-so-typical clientele.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.

My background is as an electronics engineer and I started as a consultant about 20 years ago in Cartagena, Colombia. While in college I created the first “YouTube” prototype because I kept missing lot of my classes and I needed technology that allowed me to catch up with what I missed. That was actually my thesis but at that time no one really cared about the impact of the solution. I also created a prototype of a “TV Guide” channel for the local cable company using a simple computer. Those projects gave me credibility around the local companies and I started to do consulting for Internet Service Providers. I became Director of Operations of a branch of my country’s biggest cable company and deployed the first High Speed Internet network for the City of Cartagena. 16

While working with the cable company, I launched a personal project that helped start up businesses without the budget to have a phone system. In those days even the smallest phone system was very expensive. I started to consult with call centers that could not make the Voice Over IP (VoIP) work properly. Since the technology was kind of new, I managed to have all the local service providers adjust their Internet services to be able to transport VoIP on a reliable network. That led me to consult for several technology vendors in California, which eventually made me open my own firm. Since then I’ve been offering solutions in the IT fields with the sole purpose of making my customer’s companies better and bigger.

that provides administration for recreation parks in Boston, Florida and Washington. They have a lot of employees and they wanted to unify their customer service processes. The problem was that not only they were paying a lot of money to different service providers; they did not have a unified platform of communications. We launched a combination of a CRM and Cloud PBX services that allows a customer representative to immediately see which region and particular brand the call or chat is coming from. They also are saving money because, unlike other service providers, they don’t have to pay more if they grow more.

IN ADDITION TO HELPING CLIENTS WE HEAR YOU’RE ACTIVE IN HELPING THE COMMUNITY.

WHO WOULD BE A TYPICAL CLIENT?

Yes, I work with St. Bonaventure Catholic Church where I provide a community service within a Spanish praying group that every week receives about 50+ people. Through music we help people to reach God. For the last four years I’ve been managed the animation and adoration ministry in this church. I also give my time to the Americas Community Center via Americas Business Networking. We help business owners to connect to new business opportunities, especially when it concerns the startup process for owners from other countries. I take time to share my experiences as well as share tips that worked for me.

GIVE US AN EXAMPLE…

LinkedIP is located at 2645 Executive Park Dr, Ste 319 in Weston. For more information, please visit linkedip. com or call 305.424.2400.

A typical client is a company that fits into any of these situations: a startup or established business wanting access to technology, but thinking they need a lot of capital; a company with several communication tools (most likely with different vendors) wanting to unify everything through one vendor/platform; a small or mid-sized business that is growing and it’s concerned about the increase of their “cost per user” factor; or a mid-sized to large company that needs consultancy in certified Cisco network solutions but the “big players” either don’t know or are excessively pricey. Dean Freeman from Freeman Injury Law has several branches across the county. In order to better communicate and add security to their communications, they contracted a local company to interconnect their branches privately. The service provider asked him for a five-year contract and two years in they realized their internal communications were traversing the public Internet and not their private network. He founded himself paying for a service he was not received on top of being tied to a contract. I managed to solve the issue and now their branches communicate privately. Another example would be Boston Outdoors, a firm

Dr. Montes and his staff.

A New Approach To Primary Care

I

N AN ERA WHERE EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE moving at the speed of light and online options abound, even medical care has taken a rushed and impersonal turn. Gone are the days of the old-fashioned house call. Or are they? We Care Medical Associates’ Dr. Aldo Ray Montes steadfast and personalized approach together with MCCI Medical Group’s solid and well-founded established foundation offers a fresh look, yet with a traditional style that delivers and projects a more intimate and caring approach to this new world of the practice of medicine. A philosophy, an old style of dedication to his profession, where every patient matters, every patient is a human being. Dr. Montes sees patients at his offices in Pembroke Pines and Weston, as well as during hospital visits at Memorial Hospital, but his dedication to patient care doesn’t stop there, “For most people house calls have disappeared, but for my patients, (after an evaluation) who are too ill to be seen, I will go to their homes for a house call”, says Dr. Montes. Dr. Montes specializes in geriatric medicine focusing on patients over the age of 65, delivering excellent health care combined with a warmer, traditional doctor-patient management style and a compassionate culture that reflects throughout his entire professional and caring team. “I have a fondness for my patients that goes beyond just a doctor-patient relationship”, says Dr. Montes. Dr. Yeny Andrade, who sees patients at their Weston office, and Dr. Montes have built a unique system where they create an environment of compassion, patience, and personalized quality care. Their philosophy and mission includes working with a team that holds the same vision and values: to wholeheartedly feel privileged to care for their patients. Dr. Andrade and Dr. Montes proceeded to explain the importance to provide the best preventative measures they can provide to their patients (along with their patient’s partnership and close relation), which helps

20

Dr. Andrade and Dr. Montes

maximize excellent care and deliver the best quality of life possible. “It is part of our primary goal to practice a full level of care.” said Dr. Andrade and Dr. Montes. Born in El Paso, Texas, Dr. Montes traded life (and medical training) in the Southwest for a career in South Florida, moving to Hollywood in 1988 and Pembroke Pines one year later. Dr. Andrade, a native of Guatemala City, Pines resident and University of Miami alumni, found her calling in Weston seven years ago, drawn to her growing patient population and a welcoming community. “You understand the community when you live where you work,” she says. “A large segment of my patients hail from South America. When you understand their life, you can better meet their needs.” Meeting those needs means treating every patient like family (“I want to treat patients the way I want to be treated when I am the patient,” says Dr. Andrade. “They come here and feel part of the family. Our patients are very connected to the staff,” concludes Dr. Andrade. In addition to offering the house calls when needed, it has always been Dr. Montes’s practice to give out his personal cell phone number to all of his patients, including Dr. Andrade’s patients for emergencies and after hour needs. The office offers complementary transportation, not only

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | October 2017

to appointments with the doctors but to any additional specialist appointments or diagnostic tests that need to be arranged for their patients.” In order to make potential new patients comfortable when looking for a new doctor, the practice, which is fully bilingual and accepts most insurances, offers what they call “meet and greet appointments”, where those looking to make a switch of their primary care physician, are welcome to come in to tour the office(s), meet the doctors and the staff, ask any questions they may have about patient care and their particular needs. The process seems to be working. Both the Pembroke Pines and Weston offices have been awarded 5- star Performance, designations for providing patient care in quality and prevention. But it’s the passion for their geriatric specialty (both doctors call it “incredibly rewarding”) that pushes them beyond the norm. “I take what I do very seriously,” says Dr. Montes. “I love what I do, it’s the best profession there is. I can’t see myself doing anything but practicing medicine.” For a meet and greet appointment or additional information, please call us now at (954) 618-8591; (954) 433-3114 OR (954) 558-6304.

Think bone marrow broth with roast pork, Soft boiled eggs, handmade flour noodles and even pickled bamboo shoots. Jacobs says pairing the noodles with healthy Broths can add health benefits and take the college favorite to new heights.

SO, FOR THE UNEDUCATED, WHAT IS A SPIRIT AND WHAT TYPES OF SPIRITS SHOULD EVERYONE HAVE IN THEIR HOME BAR?

At its simplest, a spirit is a distilled alcoholic beverage. So it can be anything from scotch to bourbon or even triple sec. I would say everyone should try to have at least one bottle from each spirit category if they’re building a home bar. Beyond that, scotch is an incredibly popular spirit right now.

WHEN IT COMES TO GIFTS, IS THERE ONE PARTICULAR THING TO REMEMBER WHEN BUYING FOR OTHER PEOPLE? The great thing about Crown is that you’re always going to be greeted by a knowledgeable team member, so it’s really about what the recipient likes. What do they prefer to drink? How do they like to drink it? From there we can guide customers to the right place. We also do great gift baskets that are all hand made.

Y

OU DON’T HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT TO ADD A JOLT OF HOLIDAY TO your home. Take these cues from in-demand floral designer Sylvie Kruger of Ati Fiori Florals and give your next party a pop.

MASON JARS

Kruger loves to stock up on these easy-to-find jars (hit up Target, Michael’s or Publix) and fills them with everything from floating candles to rosemary. “Any flower looks festive with a gold ribbon wrapped around the mason jar,” she says.

Need Window Blinds & Drapery?

FLOWERS

While Kruger suggests Amaryllis for festive look (“Most supermarkets stock them during holiday time,” she says.), you can also bring nature inside by collecting excess tree branches (or even Christmas wreaths) to use in tablescapes and other tabletop décor. For extra sparkle, Kruger heads to Michael’s for metallic options to mix in with the natural elements.

FOOD

Platters are a great way to bring in fresh herbs and add color to a table. Kruger likes to decorate her cheese plates with rosemary and sage bunches, or pomegranate halves straight from Publix.

VASES

When all else fails candles can bring ambiance to any room, says Kruger, who places simple candles inside glass holders to amp up the décor. “Literally just placing Pine Cones or red and green balls (even blue if you’re celebrating Chanukah) in any glass vase, tray or bowl can liven up a room,” she says. For even more decor inspo follow Sylvie on Instagram @atifiori.

WHAT ABOUT PRICE? DOES MORE EXPENSIVE MEAN BETTER? Price is not always the determining factor of quality. Quality is subjective. There are great scotches that are $30 and great scotches that are $30,000.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHER TRENDS IN THE SPIRIT WORLD? The resurgence of the cocktail! People got used to going out and spending $15-$20 for a martini or and old-fashioned. Now, people are not as into that, they’re making more cocktails at home and getting creative with it. Beer is another growing category. I would say 75 percent of our cooler doors are now focused on micro- and local breweries like [Miami-based] Funky Buddha. We’ve taken a big interest in craft beers, they’re fresh and vibrant and Miami has some great brewers!

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

W

E HAVE A LOT TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS MONTH. We are seeing the end of a devastating hurricane season, we honor our veterans for all they’ve done for us, and have the opportunity to take a moment to realize all that we are grateful for this Thanksgiving season. Hurricane Irma challenged not only our city but the entire state once it hit our shores. It is a lesson learned to always be prepared each hurricane season. I was witness to many people in our community stepping up to help in so many different ways, both during and after the storm. We should all be truly proud of our residents and city staff for their tireless efforts to ensure everyone was safe and needs were met. I also encourage everyone to sign up for the city’s CodeRed program. It is used to communicate emergency notifications to registered subscribers. There is no charge to register for or to use CodeRED, and personal information is kept confidential. Registering is quick and easy and can be done in or of two ways -either sign up online atpublic.coderedweb.com/cne/en-US/C44FCAD73941 or utilize the CodeRed Mobile Alert app, a free public safety app for both Android and iPhone users. The CodeRed app delivers community and emergency alerts to individuals targeted with the impacted area, and allows you to receive timely notifications when you’re on the road and/or away from home. CodeRed delivers notifications by phone, email and/or text; and is compatible with TDD/TTY devices for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. More information can be found on the city’s website at ppines.com. This year’s Veterans Day Observance will take place in a new location at the Memorial Park, located at 601 City Center Way by the Charles F. Dodge City Center. It will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 from noon to 2 p.m. This is such a special day of observance. Each year more than 300 people attend the ceremony, where guest speakers from multiple U.S. Services, the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Color Guard, scouts and the Pembroke Pines Charter School Band will be in attendance. Please also remember our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For the past 14 years, the Cart Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus has joined together with schools, businesses and residents to gather donations for the Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. For 100 families in the Pembroke Pines community, assisted by these donations, this program makes this holiday time a very special time. The donations provide qualifying family with generously filled bins of non-perishable foods, turkeys and more to ensure a bountiful Thanksgiving meal. For more information, I encourage you to call the Center at 954-450-6888. As always, please feel free to contact me at 954-450-1020 or fortis@ppines.com. Your Mayor, Frank C. FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings Miramarians‌ BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR

T

HE CITY OF MIRAMAR survived another hurricane and we have a lot to be thankful for; our fellow citizens in Texas and Puerto Rico were not as fortunate. Despite not experiencing much structural damage in our city, Irma did cause significant vegetative damage and an estimate of 400,000 cubic yards of debris to be cleaned up. Our city rallied together to begin the long process of restoring our properties and infrastructure. Despite having to remove trees and damaged fences, the residents of Miramar didn’t allow the storm to hinder their spirits. All over our city I witnessed neighbors helping neighbors in the wake of destruction. Observing the post-Irma clean up initiatives amongst neighbors and good Samaritans showcased the amazing community unity that exists right here in Miramar. Our first responders, public works and utilities employees quickly cleared our streets and Miramar was able to resume normal transit activity despite the brut of Irma. Now, that our roads are cleared and power has

been restored, Miramar continues our efforts to collect the massive amounts of debris that was left behind. Despite the market challenges to secure haulers due to the high demand caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma in four states, Miramar has removed debris from over one third of our zones and will work dawn to dusk until it is all gone. We have learned many lessons in this unprecedented hurricane season and together Miramar is well on our way to normalcy. I use this opportunity to remind residents that we are still in hurricane season and to fine tune your hurricane plans just as the City will continue to fine tune ours. For more ways to stay up to date with the postIrma clean up initiatives and services happening here in Miramar, please visit the Alert Center housed on the City of Miramar webpage. The alert center allows you to view all alerts and emergencies in your area. You can also check the site to view any upcoming city events! Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar

5 Tips For Keeping Cool at Night

O

NE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES AMERICANS FACE IS GETTING A good night’s sleep, and in South Florida, keeping cool throughout the evening can sometimes prove to be a challenge… even with AC. Spoon Sleep Inventor and Co-founder Herman Fisher, an engineer and former executive at Sealy, offers five tips to keep cool at night so everyone can have a more restful night’s sleep. 1. Evaporative Cooling Evaporative cooling is essential in your sleep environment to keep the body temperature balanced for a cool night sleep. Cooling through evaporation is a natural stage that occurs through perspiration or sweating. When you sweat, the only way to get to a cooler temperature is through the evaporation of water from your skin. If the air is holding too much water, the sweat will not evaporate, leaving your body temperature hot. Purchasing a portable evaporative cooling fan can help remove the water in the air, mostly used in low humidity environments.

2. Don’t be afraid to sweat Most people understand sweating as a process that your body uses to cool down. Sweating reduces the body temperature through evaporative cooling. If you are experiencing a hot body temperature consecutively over a week span, try kick starting your evaporative cooling process. One to two hours prior to your normal bedtime, try some mild exercising. I would recommend jumping jacks or running in place. Once you are close to acquiring a sweat, your body will can start the normal evaporative cooling process drawing out the layered water in your skin. 3. Clothing Dress in layers; remove layers as your body adjusts to your temperature. Try to focus on non-synthetic clothing like cotton. Also, focus on loose fitting attire that doesn’t cling to your body 4. Ice Try to drink ice water prior to sleeping. Avoid coffee or other drinks that contain caffeine. Keeping an ice pack handy throughout the night can help. Place the ice pack on the back of the neck to help create a cool sensation for your body. 5. Channel your inner Zen Stress can be a determining factor in your body temperature. The more stressed you are, the higher the blood pressure, the higher the body temperature. Try to focus on yourself and what brings you happiness. Reading can be a great remedy, especially if you are excited about the ending. You might try a cross-puzzle or a favorite game. Another way to channel your inner Zen is some breathing exercises or even meditation. Focus on abdominal breathing where you take 6-8 breaths per minute for at least 5-15 minutes. 10 Myths about Credit Unions Brought to Light BY DUSTIN JACOBS, BRIGHTSTAR CREDIT UNION

A

S YOU WALK DOWN THE AISLE IN A GROCERY STORE, DO YOU GO for the generic or brand-name products? Majority of people would pick the brand-name items because they are better in quality and the marketing wins them over. Personal finance, like shopping, is heavily influenced by marketing. When choosing between a big-name bank and a credit union, consumers are always hesitant to join credit unions for lack of knowledge and objectionable reasons they believe are true. Ten common misconceptions about credit unions are debunked and explained below.

Only employees of certain workplaces are eligible to join credit unions. Credit unions are community friendly financial institutions with membership privileges extended to anyone within a defined geographic area. Even family members of an existing credit union member who do not live in the same household may join the same credit union. Credit unions are great places to stash savings but offer fewer services than banks. Only a few basic services including deposits, withdrawals and small consumer loans were available at credit unions during their developing period. Fast forward to 2017, credit unions are fulfilling more than the basic banking needs of consumers by providing services such as opening checking or savings accounts, signing up for debit and credit cards, applying for IRAs, mortgages, car loans and more. An added perk to the services offered by credit unions is the competitive rates they offer—high rates on savings accounts and low rates on loans and credit cards plus tons of rewards and cashback! If I use a credit union rather than a bank, my savings won’t be guaranteed by the FDIC. Don’t worry, your money is still protected! Credit unions use a self-funded, federally guaranteed deposit insurance fund managed by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to protect deposits, monitor and address risks. Similar to the FDIC, NCUA insures depositors up to $250,000 per federally insured credit union bank account. It is difficult to get an approval for loans from credit unions. On the contrary, you’re more likely to get approved for loans at a credit union than at a bank. Unlike corporate banks where computers and credit scores determine your loan eligibility, credit unions are small community institutions where you can meet with their staff to personally review your credit reports and provide you with the best solutions to help you get approved based on your personal situation. They even have financial advisors who can help you get your credit score up to apply for better loans. Credit unions don’t offer auto or mortgage loans. Credit unions offer more than just car loans and mortgages. They also provide loans for home equity, personal reasons, motorcycles, boats and more. They also offer comparatively lower rates and fewer fees than banks on loans and credit cards. You have to pay an annual membership fee to be a member of a credit union. This isn’t a membership to a private country club. There’s no annual membership fee involved in joining a credit union. Credit unions generally require members to open a savings account and maintain a small minimum deposit that is fully refunded upon account closure, however, today many credit unions don’t have a minimum deposit or monthly fee requirement. Credit unions don’t offer rewards programs. Banks typically offer rewards programs in the form of cash back or frequent flyer miles for credit cards only. Credit unions, on the other hand, have rewards programs for both credit and debit cards. Since consumers are more likely to use debit cards for purchases, credit unions initiated rewards for debit cards to help their members get more for their bucks. Credit unions are technologically behind. There is an app for everything! With the rapid pace of advancement in the tech world, credit unions have advanced with the times and now provide many online and mobile banking services, such as free, remote access to deposit checks via smartphones. Some of the most common online services include online banking, mobile banking app, and an online money management tool just to name a few. Credit unions are only for poor people. People from different socioeconomic classes join credit unions in favor of their low interest rates on loans and strong emphasis on personal customer interactions. Credit unions have not been around for a long time. Credit unions have been around for more than 100 years. Given their high customer service ratings, credit unions also have a high customer retention rate with some customers being loyal members for over 20 years.
