New Year, New Me!
P
EMBROKE PINES HAS GROWN SO MUCH IN THE PAST YEAR! ESPECIALLY the shopping center near Dykes Rd. and Pines Blvd. The newest change is the new CycleBar, this place is unbelievable and the new trend in cycle studios, just check it out. Its best for everyone to start off the year with their dental and medical check ups so make sure to check out our highly recommended doctors in this month’s magazine. We know our magazine’s doctors personally and they are excellent professionals. Stressed due to the holidays? Check out page 28, for some tips on how to take it easy during this time of the year. My favorite way to release stress is to travel and St Augustine is personally one of my favorite places in Florida! On page 16 we are featuring this cute and historic city. Also, my favorite museum is Vizcaya, which you can see about on page 27 along with other great places to visit this December. Thank you for supporting us this year, it has been fun!

4 Ways To Give Back – And Heal – During The Holidays
T
HE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A TIME TO GIVE and a time to heal. Sometimes the healing comes through the giving. For example, someone afflicted with a serious illness, such as cancer, makes time to volunteer and support others who are sick. The acts of compassion translate into raising public awareness, bettering one’s self outlook, and becoming an inspiring example for all. “Whether you’re a cancer fighter, survivor, or a healthy person, it’s powerful to be out there in the community working for the cause –or any cause, for that matter,” says Melissa Palmer, a breast cancer survivor and author of My Secrets of Survivorship and of the upcoming book, Survivorship: Breast Cancer at 40. “You can impact other people to want to give of their time as well. When you go through and survive health challenges, you’re inspired to give back, help others and let them know they’re not alone. You remember so well how people reached out to you when you were sick, and you want to do the same.” Palmer co-founded a support group for cancer fighters, Soul Survivors, shortly after being diagnosed with breast cancer. “Life does not stop because you have cancer,” Palmer says. ”In fact, it’s great therapy to get involved with charity and to give of your time. And there’s no better time than the holidays to give back.” Palmer suggests
four ways to give back during the holidays: »» Visit a nursing home. This warms the heart of an older person. The more people you bring along on the visit, the merrier. “Bringing family or friends spreads the love,” Palmer says. “And you can further brighten their day by bringing cards, gift baskets, decorations and treats, and by singing carols.” »» Adopt a family. Religious groups and local organizations can help you sponsor a family to shop for during the holiday season. “There are so many needy families,” Palmer says. “Why not use some of your family’s holiday money to buy gifts for a

family in need? And when you get your own kids involved in this and other givebacks, you’re giving them one of the greatest life lessons they could have.” »» Donate to a food bank. This is one of the biggest needs every holiday season. Get the whole family involved in shopping for non-perishable goods to be distributed to needy families. “Take your kids on a special shopping trip to pick up their favorite foods to give to someone in need,” Palmer says. “Giving back really starts here during the holidays. When so many people are consumed with high-volume gift-shopping, there are untold numbers who don’t have the fundamentals of survival – food and shelter.” »» Pack stockings for homeless people. “Kids can have fun picking out practical items to stuff in the stockings – healthy snacks like granola bars, water bottles, toothpaste and warm gloves,” Palmer says. One way to distribute these is to hand them out to homeless people on your daily commutes. “There are many ways to give back,” Palmer says. “And we all can. Having a serious illness prompts some people to change their thought process about many things. Instead of thinking sadly about themselves, they think of others in need. The holidays are the right time for everyone to think of others.”

HEN THE MEDICAL NEED ARISES, DETERMINING THE MOST appropriate type of care or accessing the right level of care isn’t always an easy choice to make. As of December 11, residents of Pembroke Pines and neighboring communities will have another access point to healthcare with the opening of a new Urgent Care Center. The 3,088-square-foot Urgent Care Center, located at Sheridan Street and 166th Avenue in West Pembroke Pines, joins Memorial Healthcare Systems network of care that provides consumers with choices for treatment. “The opening of this Urgent Care Center helps us fulfill our commitment to our community to expand purposefully and to meet the medical and healthcare needs of our residents by giving them more options to the right access to care when they need it the most,” said Marc Shapiro, MD, Medical Director of the Urgent Care Center. Staffed by physicians, the Urgent Care Center will offer adults and children the ability to receive treatment for minor illnesses and injuries such as fever and flu symptoms, abdominal complaints, bladder infections, sprains, dislocations and fractures. The center will offer online check-in and accept walk-ins. Services will include digital X-rays, EKGs, laboratory tests, vaccinations, physical exams and Workers’ Compensation injury exams. The center will be open seven days a week with extended hours from 9 am to 9 pm, Monday-Friday, and 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday. “The Urgent Care Center is just one more piece in our quest to provide greater access in response to increased consumer and health plan expectations of affordability and quality healthcare,” said Melida Akiti, Vice President, Ambulatory and Community Services, Memorial Healthcare System. Recognizing that patients require different levels of medical intervention based on the medical need or emergency, Memorial Healthcare System has been expanding a network of care that aims to meet the patients’ needs online or in person. The Urgent Care Center in Pembroke Pines is the latest addition to a network of care that provides consumers with choices for treatment. A second urgent care center is slated to open in 2018 in east Hollywood at the intersection of Sheridan Street and US1. “We want to provide our patients with the right level of care at the right time, and to accomplish this vision, we needed to diversify the access points of care so that patients get the attention they need,” said Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE, president and CEO, Memorial Healthcare System. In addition to the upcoming Urgent Care Center, Memorial Healthcare System offers a variety of treatment options and locations based on a variety of health needs for adults and children. »» A Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Trauma Center and Emergency Room at Memorial Regional Hospital – the only pediatric trauma center in south Broward County and one of two pediatric emergency rooms in south Broward County; »» Adult emergency rooms at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital Pembroke, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar; »» Memorial Pembroke 24/7 Care Center providing outpatient minor-emergency care in a convenient location as a walk-in patient or by appointment with online scheduling capabilities. Patients are typically seen and treated in shorter time frames than in traditional hospital emergency rooms. The goal is to have patients on their way in two hours or less; »» MemorialDOCNow.com provides access to board-certified physicians through a live video chat for non-emergency conditions for adults and children. No appointment is necessary and can be used 24/7. Memorial Healthcare System, is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the United States and has served South Florida since 1953. TRAVEL
Forget Gift-Giving, and Create Experiences by Spending the Holidays in St. Augustine BY ANDREA CARNEIRO
S
URE, WE ALL LOVE THE HOLIDAYS. BUT SOMETIMES THEY CAN FEEL LIKE THE SAME OLD, SAME old. Year after year, you attend the same Christmas parties, wrap similar square-shaped boxes, bake dozens of cookies and struggle to maintain your pre-Thanksgiving weight. What if you did something different this year? St. Augustine, Florida is home to one of the most famous holiday lighting displays in the world. It’s also the Nation’s Oldest City having been continuously occupied by European-established settlements since 1565. There are many reasons to spend the holidays in St. Augustine. Here are some of the most popular events and things to do:
NIGHTS OF LIGHTS
Every year, millions of twinkling lights cover the cityscape of St. Augustine from November 18, 2017 and continuing nightly through January 31, 2018. Come see why Nights of Lights was selected by National Geographic in both 2011 and 2012 as one of the best holiday lighting displays in the world as you journey through old town by trolley, on foot or from a horse and carriage ride.
NIGHTS OF LIGHTS TOURS
One of the best ways to experience St. Augustine’s famous Nights of Lights is aboard Old Town Trolley’s Holiday excursion dubbed the “Holly Jolly Trolley” by locals. Enjoy complimentary cider, cookies and caroling as well as super-cool, winter-themed viewing glasses that turn millions of tiny lights into snowmen, Christmas trees and other holiday favorites. Tickets are $6 for children and $14 for adults.
16
SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES
Even if you’ve decided to forgo gift-giving this year, St. Augustine has hundreds of small, locally owned shops with one-of-a-kind items you won’t be able to find at home. Dozens of art galleries dot the cityscape featuring local artists creating everything from glass wind chimes to metal art. Tour an artisan chocolate-maker or pick up some holiday spirit at the St. Augustine Distillery, which produces small-batch gin, rum, vodka and bourbon.
CHRISTMAS TOUR OF HOMES
Each year, The Garden Club of St. Augustine hosts its annual “Christmas in the Flagler Era” inspired by the Gilded Age opulence of oil tycoon and railway magnate, Henry Morrison Flagler. This year, the Christmas Tour of Homes will be held on Sunday, December 3 from 12pm to 5 pm and will feature a walking tour through historic downtown to six private homes dating back to the early 1800s.

HISTORIC LODGING
There is no shortage of beautiful inns, hotels and bed and breakfasts dotting the landscape of St. Augustine’s downtown. Built in 1865, The Kenwood Inn on Marine Street is an ideal locale for your holiday stay in the Nation’s Oldest City. Individually decorated guestrooms feature rich, hardwood floors, four-poster and antique beds for a mix of Old Florida elegance with a hint of the tropics.
REST & RELAXATION
Erected in 1888 and a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Historic Hotels of America, the Casa Monica Resort & Spa is the perfect spot for rest and relaxation while taking in the famous Nights of Lights display. Located on Cordova Street across from Flagler College, Casa Monica blends Moroccan-inspired décor with modern conveniences and the brand new, full-service Poseidon Spa.

CYCLEBAR
FROM SCHOOLTEACHER TO INSPIRATION, SUZANNE WELLS IS LEADING THE WAY FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PINES FITNESS SCENE.
S
UZANNE WELLS DOESN’T WANT TO HEAR YOUR EXCUSES. The Pines resident, mom, wife and CycleBar owner is a big believer in the power of exercise and the ability of anyone (yes, anyone) to carve out an hour for their own physical and mental health. “It’s that hour that you can give yourself to forget what’s on your mind—kids, job, health issues,” she says. “That one hour allows you to escape from all of that and release some endorphins. You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others.”
Making that hour accessible, easy and fun for Pines residents is just one of the goals Suzanne had when she opened CycleBar this past August alongside her husband Bryn, his brother Mark and Mark’s wife, Jean. The premium indoor cycling studio is far from your average stationary bike ride, featuring a tiered “cycle theater” with 46 custom bikes, flat-screen TVs, personal data monitors and state-of-the-art audio, video and lighting technology. Bringing it all together? Suzanne’s hand picked staff of talented instructors, a group she sees as the backbone of the studio’s success. “CycleBar is nothing without great instructors,” she says, noting that she searched high and low for the best South Florida had to offer. “I went all over to bring something fresh and new to Pembroke Pines. Each of them brings something different, whether it’s their music choices or their ride style. I was lucky to find six really diverse instructors.” Suzanne's own fitness journey started long ago, but took a turn to the more serious in 2005 when she began to have lung issues that caused her not only physical challenges but additional stress as well. “I started spinning to build my cardio and it ended up being a tension reliever,” she says. “If I could spin then I could breathe, and it went hand in hand.” In 2012 Suzanne was diagnosed with a form of lung disease, causing her to become even more diligent about her cardio schedule and inspiring her to look into opening a fitness-centered business. “Spinning has always helped me with my lungs and with the everyday stresses of life, so I wanted to bring that to others,” she says. An online search for franchised cycle studios led her to CycleBar and the rest is history. “It was a very organic process,” says Suzanne. “The owners just fit in with everything I had envisioned.” Which leads us back to the excuses. “I’ve always been an enforcer to get people to work out,” Suzanne says with a laugh. “I think people are sometimes intimidated, but with any activity you have to go at your own pace. I have people who haven’t worked out in years start and end up coming five days a week because they see results. I’m not just running a business, CycleBar is impacting people’s lives.” CycleBar is located at 15657 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33027. ANF Group Tour De Broward to Benefit Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital
I
T HAS BEEN LESS THAN TWO MONTHS SINCE 14-YEAR-OLD CHRISTIAN Orejuela received the heart transplant at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital that saved his life. Prior to surgery, the Royal Palm Beach resident had been hospitalized for several months with worsening cardiomyopathy, but, to see the teen now, you’d never know he’d been sick at all. It’s these stories of hope and triumph that have come to symbolize why more than 7,000 people are expected to participate in the ANF Group Tour de Broward, a fundraiser for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. Some see it as an opportunity to assist kids like Christian, who has been named the 2018 event’s ambassador, and families overcome the health challenges that threaten lives. Others clearly appreciate having a world-class pediatric hospital in their backyard, one that treats every patient, regardless of their ability to pay.

Whatever the reason, Miramar Regional Park will be where they’ll all gather the morning of Sunday, February 25, 2018, to cycle, run, walk, or play. The dollars raised during the 9th annual event will go toward pediatric facilities, programs, and services at the children’s hospital, including a planned four-story expansion of the current facility. “This is an opportunity for South Florida to assist our efforts to provide safe, high quality, cost-effective, patient and family-centered care,” said Memorial Healthcare System President & CEO Aurelio M. Fernandez, III, FACHE. “Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is positioned to be one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation and, with our community’s support, we’ll achieve that goal.” Sponsored by ANF Group, Tour de Broward consists of 50 and 100K bicycle rides, a 5K timed run, 3K walk, and the “Power of Play Kid Zone,” a sports-themed, fun area for children 13 or younger. The 100K ride starts at 7:00 a.m., run at 8:00 a.m., and walk at 9:00 a.m. Pre-registration and day-of-event registration fees range from $15-$50, depending on the event and sign-up date. Participants can register in advance until Saturday, February 24 (12:00 p.m.), at http://www.tourdebroward.com or at the park the next day. For riders there is an additional fundraising commitment, however, some exceptions apply. Please refer to “Event Information” on the Tour de Broward website. The 2017 Tour de Broward raised more than $500,000, positively impacting more than 80,000 kids who required outpatient visits, surgery, admissions and observation stays during the year. In its eight-year history, the event has raised more than $3 million to aid the growth of Hollywood-based hospital, the largest pediatric facility serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties. To learn about sponsorship opportunities, call (954) 265-7241. For general information about the event, call (954) 905-5633.

Estefano’s Story When it came time to blow out his candles on his 14th birthday, Estefano had only one wish: a new heart. Just 40 minutes later, the Pediatric Heart Transplant team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital surprised his family with a phone call that made his wish come true. Born with a single ventricle heart defect, Estefano underwent five open heart surgeries since the age of 2. The surgeries allowed his heart to function better and sustain him, but his heart began to fail and the team assessed the need to put him on the transplant list. The Weston teen is the hospital’s 30th heart transplant recipient and living legacy of a donor family who gave him the gift of a new life.

From the sprawling mansion (filled with original furniture and artifacts) to the backyard barge to the amazing gardens, a visit to Vizcaya is truly a fantastic excursion for parents and children alike. Don’t Miss: The estate’s “Gardens by Moonlight” series is an incredible opportunity to wander the grounds in a new way, all while taking in a new local artist.

HE HOLIDAYS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE RELAXING, JOYOUS AND FUN, but for millions of Americans they bring stress, anxiety and even depression. In fact, numerous studies have shown that upwards of 70 percent of Americans feel stressed as the holidays bear down on them. A survey by Think Finance revealed that 45 percent of 1,000 respondents would prefer to skip Christmas altogether. Why has the national mood swung from Santa Claus is Coming to Town to The Grinch Who Stole Christmas? A lack of time, shortage of money, an excessive amount of expectations and a burdensome commitment to gift-buying are some of the top reasons people list for their stress levels reaching higher than the top of the Christmas tree. To make the season more enjoyable, and to reduce stress, Dr. Raj Gupta says people should make their overall wellness a higher priority on their long holiday to-do list. “Physical exercise makes the mental strain of the season much more manageable and can substantially decrease the stress one feels from all the demands,” says Gupta, author of Wellness Center Solution: How Physicians Can Transform Their Practices, Their Income and Their Lives, and founder of Soul Focus Wellness Center. “Exercise and some refreshing thinking and relaxing techniques help if done on a consistent basis.”

1. Walk somewhere besides the mall. A brisk half-hour walk a day relaxes the brain and improves sleep. A study by California State University found a 10-minute walk increases energy, alters mood and can bring a positive outlook for up to two hours. “There’s a rhythm to it that relaxes the brain,” Gupta says. “It’s a proven stress-reducer. Movement makes the worries keep their distance.” 2. Be a “chairman” if you’re bored. Most of working America is sedentary, and now much of shopping America is as well given the growth of online purchasing. A chair dip exercise is a handy way to tone and energize between your computer screen times. You use two chairs facing each other, about three feet apart. Sit on the edge of one chair and grip the edge with your hands. Place your heels on the edge of the other chair. Slide forward so your rear end clears the edge, then lower yourself until your elbows are between 45-90 degrees. Slowly push yourself back up. “It works your triceps, shoulders and your core,” Gupta says. 3. Drink heavily ... water, that is! Many people over-imbibe during the holidays and it has a detrimental affect on their wellness. Water brings weight loss and keeps your body in balance for all kinds of stressors. “A whopping 75 percent of all Americans are dehydrated,” Gupta says. “Staying properly hydrated is a panacea for what ails you—from daytime fatigue to headaches to back and joint pain to losing weight. Why wait ’til after the holidays to lose weight?” 4. Give gratitude. In the rush to get everything done, we forget to appreciate what we have. Gupta says pausing to reflect brings a perspective that calms you down. “Take a few moments to really relish your health and all your blessings,” Gupta says. “The holidays are a perfect time to remember all that.” “People who are over-burdened often make time for everybody and everything but themselves, and that takes a toll,” Gupta says. “People troubled every holiday season by all the pressures must ask themselves, ‘Do I want to enjoy this?’ If so, they need to step away for a few minutes each day, get in a sweat, and get in tune with themselves.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

Cirque du Soleil’s VOLTA Heads to Hard Rock Stadium
C
IRQUE DU SOLEIL IS BRINGING THEIR SIGnature blend of performance, music and art to Miami once again with the premiere of VOLTA. Written and directed by Bastien Alexandre and with Jean Guibert as the director of creation, the show features music by International electronic group M83, who brings his space-age future pop sound to the Cirque du Soleil stage for the first time ever. The show will be presented under the Big Top next to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami starting December 15, 2017. The name VOLTA refers to a sudden about-face, a change in emotion or idea often used in poetry. It also speaks to the jolt of energy delivered through the show. VOLTA tells a spellbinding story about the freedom to choose and the thrill of blazing your own trail. Inspired in part by the adventurous spirit that fuels the culture of action sports, the show weaves the adrenaline rush of acrobatics into a visually striking world driven by a stirring melodic score. WAZ, a popular game show host, has lost touch with his inner self in the pursuit of fame, pulling others in the trap
of instant glory. But as doubt sets in, WAZ is enlightened by childhood memories as he encounters “free spirits” who open doors to his inner soul he has long kept shut. On his high-voltage search for meaning, will WAZ find the courage to relinquish his fame, reconnect with his true self, and shine bright? Access to the best seats and prices are available for existing Cirque Club members and those who do not have a membership can visit cirquedusoleil.com/cirqueclub to sign up for a complimentary membership. Tickets are also available for purchase to the general public visiting cirquedusoleil. com/volta or calling 1-877-9CIRQUE (1-877-924-7783). Tickets are available starting from $40. VOLTA is a story of transformation. It is about being true to oneself, fulfilling one’s true potential, and the power of the group to make that possible. It celebrates freedom as a movement.

FROM THE MAYOR
Happy New Year Miramar! BY MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM, CITY OF MIRAMAR
T
HE CITY OF MIRAMAR HAS had a remarkable 2017 with population growth, the completion of new city facilities and the announcement of three major new corporate headquarters investing over $200 million dollars in facilities in Miramar. As we usher in a new year, this is the perfect time to set goals to make our 2018 even greater. Just as you make personal resolutions, the City of Miramar must continue to resolve to be a wonderful place to live, work, visit and play as well. Our goals and vision should far exceed the status quo. Imagine our city offering our youth professional development for the high paying industries located in our city. Imagine Miramar being a tourist destination by expanding sports tourism while offering high performance training to our residents. Imagine Miramar attracting even more corporations with high paying jobs in emerging industries like medical sciences, artificial intelligence and technology! Right now we are off to a great start. There are a few developments worth mentioning that will not only make 2018 a success but puts us on the path to doing just that.
In an effort to introduce high performance tennis and expand sports tourism in Miramar, the City Commission approved a land lease deal to relocate the American Tennis Association to the City of Miramar. The project includes a tennis arena, 20 USTA certified courts, a Black Tennis Museum and Hall of Fame and potentially, a small hotel to be built at Miramar Regional Park at no cost to the City. The project has been endorsed by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau and our local tennis community. Our youth in Miramar will now have a place to develop their skills and compete globally while visitors from across the nation will play in tournaments bringing millions of dollars in proven economic impact to our business community.
On the economic front, 2018 will see the arrival of Apotex Pharmaceuticals. Miramar will be their US Headquarters for R&D and packaging. Their $185 million investment will create many employment opportunities not only for our residents but will open a new supply chain opportunity for our business community. It will be imperative that our school system properly prepare our youth for these high paying jobs and provide technical skills required for this industry. I see this as an opportunity for many collaborative ventures between the City, Apotex and our schools. So, when we examine the many opportunities to think big and dream big, what are some thoughts that come to your mind? How can we as a City continue to lead in the areas of business, tourism and just simply being a great City to live? Send me your ideas directly, wmessam@miramarfl. gov<mailto:wmessam@miramarfl.gov> I look forward to hearing from you and seeing what we can do together. Yours in Service, Wayne Messam Mayor, City of Miramar
