ACCESS TO E D U C AT I O N

BY ANDREA CARNEIRO

F

OR MOST PARENTS, THE TERM “LEARNING DISABLED” HAS A VERY SPECIFIC MEANing, associated mostly with common diagnoses such as autism spectrum, behavioral problems and other similar issues beyond learning. But, in truth, the learning disability (or LD) range can run large and varied. And somewhere in the midst of all of those dysfunctions—19 to be exact— many children can get lost, simply because they need cognitive remediation. “There are many children who are very smart and they fall through the cracks because of that,” says Claude LeFrancois, director of Davie’s Access School. “People disassociate the two, they think because a child is smart they can’t have learning complications.” To the contrary, he says, noting that everyone naturally has areas of strength and weakness. Building on those areas of weakness is at the heart of Access School, a program borne of LeFrancois’ desire to serve an oft-ignored population of kids who may be struggling or experiencing specific difficulties in a mainstream school – meaning they don't need more tutoring or more behavior support; they need cognitive brain building. The accredited school, made up of somewhere between 30 and 40 elementary-aged children acts as a “cognitive school,” the only one of its kind in Florida, with the goal of offering evidence based programming for a two-to-three year period alongside mainstream education. Explains LeFrancois, “We’re doing physical therapy for the brain combined with regular curriculum.” Upon entrance, the school gives each student a 4-5 hour cognitive assessment to accurately map a student's strengths and weaknesses and to establish how mild or severe the function may be. From there, LeFrancois and his team build a personalized plan that includes regular academic subjects and custom cognitive exercise (or “labs”) to address that student's needs. “In essence, we enroll kids that need to either build brain functions or enhance them. When the area is weak, we make it strong,” says LeFrancois. The labs are integrated seamlessly into the day with Montessori programming or a more specialized format, depending on the issues and levels. The cognitive program originates from Canada and all Access School teachers spend the summer in Toronto for intense training. After students receive cognitive programming, most students can return to a regular academic setting. But with many parents asking to stay longer, Access School saw the need to create an internal program to accommodate all children from grade one to six. Since all students are of average or above average levels of intelligence, this format allows students with mild, moderate or more severe learning complications to truly get the right programming without compromising time or education. The school offers personalized tours to parents who want to see the program in action, so as to understand the benefits of cognitive brain building. “We want to map the brain at a young age to work out the kinks. A program like this should be part of every child's education. Who does not want to build one's brain,” says LeFrancois. “Our goal is to target the underlying root cause in order to avoid future band-aids and pitfalls.” Access School is located at 4801 South University Drive Suite 114, Davie, FL 33328. For more information, please call 954-680-9494 or visit accessschool.net.

OUTH BROWARD HOSPITAL DISTRICT COMMISSIONER LAURA RAYBIN Miller recently earned the prestigious status of “fellow” from the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance directors’ ability to fulfill their roles and enhance the value of the enterprise. Miller completed the NACD Fellowship – The Gold Standard Director Credential® -- demonstrating a commitment to the highest standard of boardroom excellence. This represents not only a singular accomplishment, but also an advantage for the board and management teams to have someone with Miller’s credentials. One of the many advantages, and of greatest importance to Miller and the Board, was the implementation of the best governance practices for the District. “I embarked on this journey because I have always been committed to the work I do as a commissioner, which impacts the lives of the people we serve,” said Miller, who most recently finished a year as chair of the board of commissioners for Memorial Healthcare System. In the last 20 years Miller has been involved in public and community affairs in South Florida, making a positive impact in the lives of many residents through her leadership and participation in civic, and healthcare organizations. Throughout her career, she also has garnered a series of political appointments that has allowed her to make significant changes and improvements in governance, implementing best practices in the boards she has served. In August 2000, she was appointed to serve as Commissioner of the South Broward Hospital District (Memorial Healthcare System) by Governor Jeb Bush – a position she has held for the last 17 years through consecutive governmental appointments, making her the longest-standing member of this board. During her tenure, she is credited for lessening the tax burden of the communities Memorial Healthcare System serves under its Safety Net status, as well as, maintaining Memorial’s positive trajectory of safety and quality outcomes, where Memorial is recognized as a national leader. Her fervor for raising awareness of breast cancer has driven her to speak publicly about the disease, educating and empowering women to take charge of their health. To this endeavor, she has been committed to raising public awareness about the Memorial Breast Cancer Center, the only regional breast cancer center providing comprehensive Breast Cancer care exclusively to women. She is credited for spearheading the Center’s Women’s Recovery, the implementation of the volunteer auxiliary committee for fundraising and the establishment of numerous partnerships throughout the community. Ms. Miller has served as Board Liaison to the Joe DiMaggio and Memorial Foundations.

Five Things You’re Doing That Are Compromising Your Online Safety BY DR. ERIC COLE

UST LIKE WE WORK TO IMPROVE OUR PHYSICAL health and well-being, it’s also vitally important to improve our cyber health and keep ourselves safe from online danger. Here are five easy fixes to keep yourself cyber safe this year:

J

company. Unfortunately, it’s likely that you’ll get compromised in the near future and it could take a long time, if ever, to recover your personal and financial files. That effort and heartache will cost a lot more than a couple hundred bucks for the second computer.

WHAT YOU’RE DOING: CLICKING IN EMAILS

What You Should Be Doing Instead: Every time you log on to an unprotected public

What You Should Be Doing Instead: Never click on a link or email

attachment. Think of email as a text-only method of communication because nothing else about it is safe. It was never meant for transferring files, and links are probably not what they appear to be. Remember that email is the number one method that the adversary uses to get you to do their bidding. Unless you absolutely know that the email comes from someone you trust, don’t click! And even if it does come from someone you trust, be cautious if the link appears unusual or out of character for them. It could be an adversary pretending to be someone you know.

WHAT YOU’RE DOING: USING ONLY ONE CREDIT CARD

What You Should Be Doing Instead: There are many credit cards without annual fees

that will be more than happy to extend you credit. I recommend having at least 3 or 4 different cards that you use for different purposes. Ask for a low credit line on each – I’m certainly not recommending that you run up big bills on multiple cards! Having a separate card for different types of transactions reduces your risk and the effort needed if one card gets compromised. For example, have separate cards for online bill paying, online purchases, dining and entertainment, and travel. Never use a debit card except at the ATM – you have far less fraud and theft protection from your bank than you do from the credit card companies. Finally, enable real time text message alerts on your cards so that you know every time your card is used and don’t find out at the end of the month when you see unusual charges.

WHAT YOU’RE DOING: USING ONE COMPUTER FOR ALL YOUR CYBER ACTIVITY

What You Should Be Doing Instead: With the price of computers dropping rapidly, you can’t afford NOT to have a separate “high risk” computer for your online activities such as email, web browsing, and shopping. On your “low risk” computer you can minimize online activity to encrypted transactions such as with your bank or credit card

WHAT YOU’RE DOING: USING PUBLIC WIFI WITHOUT A VPN

network, everyone else on that network can see your computer or device. It’s like running naked through the mall shouting “Look at me!” — you will most certainly get noticed. Cover up! There is a simple type of application called a VPN, which stands for virtual private network. It sounds fancy, but what it really does is create a private tunnel to the Internet that your device can use without being seen. WHAT YOU’RE DOING: USING WEAK PASSWORDS

What You Should Be Doing Instead: I’ve always recommended switching to pass

phrases where you create a strong password from a phrase that you’ll remember but that no one can guess. This is great if you only have a few passwords to remember, because you don’t want to use the same passphrase for multiple sites. But some people have hundreds of passwords for home and work, making it impossible to create unique phrases for each one and remember which is which. In these cases, consider using a password vault that will generate strong passwords for each site you use. You only need to remember the master password/passphrase to unlock the vault, and then it will fill in your unique passwords as you visit different sites. Remember to lock your vault after each session, or have it time out after a couple of minutes. Bottom line, be smart about how you handle your online activity. Even if you adopt only one or two of these tips, you’ll be taking a big step toward being cyber safe this year and beyond. ustom made dress shirts may seem like the domain of a rarefied few, but one South Florida company is now aimed at bringing style to the masses. Davie-based eTailors is embarking on a journey to make custom suiting and shirts available to men across the region, offering a mix of personalized styles and fits created specifically for their clients. “eTailors customers are successful professionals that understand the importance of appearance and how it improves their lives,” says Sean Coyle, the company’s Vice President of Design and Merchandise. “They come to us for the easiest, best clothing experience that results in the culmination of their vision.” Here’s how it works: Clients can visit the eTailors website to set up an appointment with a member of the team, meeting with them at their home or office (or at the company’s Weston location) to have professional measurements taken and look through options for fabrics and styles. The information is then translated into a custom-made shirt or suit that arrives within four-to-six weeks. “No one is really an off the rack size. You’re buying a composite of literally thousands of peoples measurements,” explains Coyle, whose background includes work with Perry Ellis International and Harley-Davidson Motor Clothes. “When you work with us, you are ensuring a great fit that is customized to your body. We work with you to tailor everything, not just take your measurements. It is all custom built to your liking.” Because eTailors is dedicated to creating an “old-fashioned tailoring experience” for everyone, the company offers clients a large selection of fabrics and more than 500 styling 18

My Husband wanted a special shirt for his birthday and I heard about this new company in Weston selling custom made shirts. options at varying price points. They also offer options based on client lifestyle, with shirts for those who don a suit and tie on a daily basis as well as those who want to own just one or two high-quality dress shirts. They also cater to special occasion customers who may be looking for a specific style for a wedding, event or job interview. “Often [our customers] begin their eTailor journey in search of a better dress shirt and suit,” says Coyle. “Once they see all that we have to offer they expand to special occasion and everyday.” In addition to comfort and style, Coyle says the company remains unique in it’s offer of expertise, not just clothing. “We are more than tailors; we have a team of tailors, designers, and stylists who know the current fashion trends as well as sartorial secrets. We have the answer to your clothing questions and offer expert advice and guidance,” he says. Expert advice also translates into

time saved, as Coyle notes that spending an afternoon hunting for the perfect (either in person or online) can often end up in disappointment. “You often can’t find the right color, size, fabric, etc.,” he says. “We work with you and customize to your ideas and taste. Your time is streamlined as our tailors make what you want each and every time without the fuss and run around.” For now, eTailors is only available in South Florida, but the team looks forward to continuing to expand and bring style and value to men everywhere. Says Coyle, “We know delighting our client is our priority. We want to ensure each ones needs can be addressed wherever they may be.” To schedule your appointment with eTailors, please call 954.633.8661, or visit etailors.com.

4 Ways Parents, Teachers and Students Can Reduce Standardized-Test Stress

S

TANDARDIZED TESTING HAS DRAWN ITS SHARE OF CRITICISM FROM teachers, students and parents. One of the most common complaints is the stress that all three groups feel – from preparation through performance. From a young age, students take these timed tests that measure academic competency and, ultimately, whether they’re college material. Countless articles on standardized testing in the U.S. point out the pressure on students to score well; that teachers are often evaluated by how their students fare on the tests; and that parents get anxiety hoping their children score high. Amid all this stress comes the basic but difficult-to-answer question: How to deal with it? “There is a tremendous amount of controversy about standardized testing, and no matter which side of the argument you are on, teachers have no choice,” says Dr. Raj Gupta , founder of Soul Focus Wellness Center and author of Wellness Center Solution: How Physicians Can Transform Their Practices, Their Income and Their Lives. “Teachers, students and parents must deal with it the best way they can. And finding consistently healthy habits to counter these stress inducers is so important. In fact, taking the stress out of the test process can carry over to every aspect of their life,” he says. “The scores aren’t as important as the quality of life they give themselves in what is a results-oriented world, often to a fault.” Gupta offers four tips that teachers, students and parents can use to better deal with test-related stress: »» Diet. Poor eating habits contribute to stress. “I see this every day with my three girls,” Gupta says. “Grandma will feed them tons of sugar, and then I come home to find the girls either bouncing off the walls or miserably cranky after crashing

22

www.pembrokepinescitynews.com | February 2018

from their sugar high. Good wholesome foods that are not processed or refined and are free from trans fats prevent our energy levels from peaking and crashing throughout the day.” »» Rest. Getting enough sleep helps keep your body and mind in top shape, making you better equipped to deal with any negative stressors. “Most of your healing and repair takes place when you are sleeping,” says Dr. Gupta. “This is when the body recharges the battery. If you continue to deprive your body of sleep, your immune system breaks down and you get sick.” »» Exercise. A study conducted by California State University found that a 10-minute walk is enough to increase energy, alter mood, and provide a positive outlook for up to two hours. Exercise also assists in quality sleep. “Exercise is the greatest stress buster,” Gupta says. “Regular exercise can change your life.” »» Mental attitude. “Stress is like a snowball: If you let it roll, it will gain speed, momentum and weight, and you are overreacting, making even small difficulties seem like major crises,” Gupta says. He suggests countering a stressful situation with a calming action. Example: when rush-hour traffic is irritating, listen to a self-improvement audio. “Some things we can’t control, but we can control our response to them,” Gupta says. “Stress can cause all sorts of health problems,” Gupta says. “It affects all ages, as seen with the implementation of standardized testing. But it can be dealt with on a daily basis, and by doing so consistently, it can help us pass any and all stress tests in the future.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

Estefano’s Story When it came time to blow out his candles on his 14th birthday, Estefano had only one wish: a new heart. Just 40 minutes later, the Pediatric Heart Transplant team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital surprised his family with a phone call that made his wish come true. Born with a single ventricle heart defect, Estefano underwent five open heart surgeries since the age of 2. The surgeries allowed his heart to function better and sustain him, but his heart began to fail and the team assessed the need to put him on the transplant list. The Weston teen is the hospital’s 30th heart transplant recipient and living legacy of a donor family who gave him the gift of a new life.
