MCUSA PARTNERS WITH BROWARD SCHOOLS Motivational Coaches of America (MCUSA), announced that additional counselors will be stationed at Florida schools throughout the State to provide in-person behavioral health and emotional support to children and their families. Expansion will focus primarily on Broward, Miami Dade and Palm Beach counties. All services will be free of charge and offered to all children, regardless of their health coverage status. Motivational coaches will work with school principals to identify youth who may have been displaced or have suffered extensive trauma due to the impact of the Stoneman Douglas shooting. Many of the counselors will serve schools with which they work on a daily basis. MCUSA is currently available in 78 schools in Broward, Miami Dade and Palm Beach. “We launched our partnership with Broward County School District last summer and will work with them in the aftermath of this tragedy to ensure all students have the proper resources they need to cope with these events,” said MCUSA Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Julio Avael.

MEMORIAL CONGENITAL HEART PROGRAM RECOGNIZED In recognition of its expertise in serving adults with congenital heart disease, The Adult Congenital Heart Program, part of the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute, at Memorial Regional Hospital is now nationally accredited by the Adult Congenital Heart Association. Memorial Regional Hospital’s program is the only one accredited in Florida and one of 17 in the U.S. The Adult Congenital Heart Association is a nationwide organization focused on connecting patients, family members and healthcare providers to form a community of support and network of experts with knowledge of congenital heart disease. “There are now more adults than children in the U.S. with CHD,” said Mark Roeder, President and CEO of ACHA. “Accreditation will elevate the standard of care and have a positive impact on the futures of those living with this disease. Coordination of care is key, and this accreditation program will make care more streamlined for ACHD patients, improving their quality of life.”

4 Ways Workers Benefit From Shared Innovative Office Space

T

re su

g nin a e

HE SHARED OFFICE SPACE CONCEPT HAS RISEN STEADILY IN POPUlarity over the past decade, and by 2020 more than 26,000 co-working spaces will be in use globally, according to Small Business Labs, which tracks trends in small businesses. Those co-use office locations will be the work base for 3.8 million people – over double the number in 2017. The rapid growth of shared office space has sparked an evolution in how buildings, work environments and special features are tailored to this relatively new category of worker. “Shared office space can make a real difference in your career, giving you space, information, culture and connection,” says April Zimmerman Katz, president of the Zimmerman Companies, a property management company in Columbus, Ohio, and co-founder of Versa LLC (versa.works), a provider of shared innovative work space in Columbus. “People can find both the business and human empowerment they need through welcoming and functional workspaces with multiple resources. Collaborative spaces attract innovative and creative people looking for a unique environment.”

KATZ LISTS FOUR BENEFITS WORKERS SEEK IN COLLABORATIVE SPACES: »» Cost efficiency. Buying or leasing a full or traditional office is often far more

expensive than a shared office space. Monthly membership fees for shared spaces can be relatively low compared to the cost of a typical office, including furniture and other office necessities. »» Flexibility. An environment that provides enough space for both concentrating on work as well as socializing reflects a kind of “freedom” to which workers of all ages aspire, Katz says. “Spaces that break down the barrier between free time and work time provide comfort, balance, positive energy and inspiration.” »» Connection. A shared office space opens a path to meeting new people in the professional world and networking. Many such buildings are designed with an openness, which provides an inviting atmosphere. Usually, a good number of people occupy a shared office space, and the demographics can change frequently as people come and go. “Adults tend to frequent the same places every day, namely the traditional office setup,” Katz says. “The result is a form of isolation – from community, information and trends. A shared space community creates awareness through exposure to new connections and perspectives that benefit you and your world.” »» Empowerment. A shared office often offers extras in terms of professional, cultural and personal activities or classes. “Being part of a varied community that proposes interesting activities means members will be exposed to others’ interests, which along with discovering similarities, becomes an enriching experience,” Katz says. “You can gain significant personal improvement from expanding the normal office environment.” Katz herself sees only opportunity as the market grows. “Shared office space is a more sophisticated vision of collaboration and networking,” she says. “You can find the ideal place to do good work, and there’s help in numerous ways to grow professionally and personally.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

N MARCH 23 MUSEUM OF DISCOVERY AND Science visitors will enjoy the fresh air and safe surroundings of the new Science Park as they continue their exploration of the Museum outdoors. Giant full-body exhibits will demonstrate key principles of physics and engineering while also providing entertainment and group interaction. This green oasis in the center of the City of Fort Lauderdale will spark curiosity for visitors from two to 82. This dynamic outdoor expansion of the Museum’s handson learning experiences is a family based zone of discovery welcoming visitors of all ages. Here, visitors explore together to strengthen science understanding and science thinking skills through hands-on exploration in a beautiful outdoor setting. The exhibits provide multiple, content-rich opportunities in which visitors can experiment with basic principles of the physical world and come to intuitive understandings about how they work. The exciting, skill-based experiences and environment of the Science Park increase the capacity of the Museum by encouraging open-ended experimentation in the physical sciences and the development of science-thinking skills. By creating a playful world where the mind, the senses and the emotions are all engaged in exciting and interconnected ways, the exhibits at the new Science Park generate those surprising “a-ha” moments where true discovery, learning and skillbuilding take place. The Science Park has an activity guide that was created by 50 students from Deerfield Beach Middle School. During the 2017 school year, these students participated in an innovative program at the Museum called Science in Action, supported by the School Board of Broward County.

SCHOOL NEWS

Pines Middle Designated “Green Apple” School

P

INES MIDDLE SCHOOL,HAS BEEN DESIGNATED A “GREEN APPLE” School by the Florida Green School Designation Program. The school has been busy creating a sustainable environment, beginning with the building of homes for the owls on campus, and, most recently, through its Butterfly Garden, which was created on November 15, 2017. The tranquil sanctuary on the school’s campus helped bring Pines Middle School the distinction and was established by a group of students (as well as chaperoned by of teacher Perl Searle). Brothers Nursery donated all of the plants and mulch. Students began planting a vegetable garden last month and have joined the “How Low Can You Go?” challenge to reduce energy usage at the school, as well as working on improving Air Quality around the school’s campus. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection recognizes schools that make a commitment to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources through the Green School Designation Program. The program’s environmental guidelines help Florida primary and secondary schools evaluate operations, set goals and take specific actions to improve environmental performance. T To become designated, schools must conduct a thorough property assessment and implement a specified number of environmental practices in five areas of sustainable operations: Communication and Education (Students, Staff, Public); Waste Reduction, Reuse and Recycling; Water Conservation; Energy Efficiency; and Air Quality. Schools have an opportunity to obtain different “Apple” levels based on the requirements of each tier. Pines Middle School has 940 students enrolled in grades 6 through 8.

HACKS AND TIPS TO MAKE YOUR SPRING CLEANING A LITTLE EASIER

1

HIT YOUR GARBAGE DISPOSAL WITH SOME SLICED LEMON TO RID YOUR KITCHEN OF STINKY SMELLS AND ADD A FRESH SCENT TO THE ROOM.

4

YOUR LINT ROLLER CAN DO DOUBLE DUTY—USE IT TO GIVE STUFFED ANIMALS A QUICK ONCEOVER AS WELL ROLL OVER A DUSTY CAR INTERIOR.

7

CLEAN AND DEODORIZE A MICROWAVE BY PLACING SLICED LEMONS, 1/4 CUP OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND WATER IN A SHALLOW DISH. PLACE IN THE MICROWAVE FOR A FEW MINUTES THEN LET SIT WITH THE DOOR CLOSED FOR 10 MINUTES. WIPE WITH A DAMP SPONGE.

2

6

10

DIY A QUICK CLEANING SOLUTION WITH A QUART OF WARM WATER AND FOUR TABLESPOONS OF BAKING SODA.

FRESHEN UP PET BEDS BY DUSTING WITH BAKING SODA AND VACUUMING AFTER 15-20 MINUTES.

18

YOU CAN USE A VINEGAR SOLUTION, FOLLOWED BY A DAB OF OLIVE OIL, TO CLEAN AND SHINE STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES.

DIP A COTTON SWAB IN VINEGAR TO GIVE A COMPUTER KEYBOARD A QUICK CLEANING.

CLEAN A CUTTING BOARD WITH JUST SALT AND HALF OF A LEMON.

AVOID SOAP SCUM ON SHOWER WALLS AND FLOORS BY SWAPPING IN GLYCERIN- OR VEGETABLE-BASED SOAPS. WHEN IN DOUBT, TOSS IT IN THE TOP RACK OF THE DISHWASHER. EXPERTS SAY IF IT’S CERAMIC, GLASS, METAL OR HARD PLASTIC IT’S A GO.

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR MATTRESS! EXPERTS ADVISE CLEANING IT ONCE A YEAR WITH A THOROUGH VACUUMING AND WIPE DOWN WITH MILD HOUSE CLEANING SOLUTION.

16

20

TACKLE A BIG ROOM BY CLEARING OUT ANY CLUTTER BEFORE YOU GET TO WORK. YOU’LL ELIMINATE THE TEMPTATION OF WIPING AROUND BIG ITEMS.

17

ACCORDING TO THE MOLLY MAID COMPANY YOU CAN REUSE DRYER SHEETS AS DUSTING RAGS FOR BASEBOARDS, BLINDS AND TV AND COMPUTER SCREENS. “THEIR ANTISTATIC QUALITIES ACTUALLY REPEL DUST, REDUCING THE FREQUENCY OF DUSTING WORK IN YOUR HOME.”

12

13

SPEED UP BEDMAKING BY REMEMBERING THAT TAGS ALWAYS GO TO THE BOTTOM. KING TAGS ARE ON THE LEFT, QUEEN ON THE RIGHT.

INVEST THE TIME TO MAKE SURE YOUR SURFACES ARE TRULY CLEAN- MOST CLEANERS WILL DO THE HEAVY LIFTING IF YOU LEAVE THEM BE FOR A FEW MINUTES. BE PREPARED BY STOCKING CLEANING SUPPLIES SUCH AS MICROFIBER CLOTHS, RUBBER GLOVES, SOLUTION AND RAGS UNDER EVERY SINK. CLEAN DURING THE DAY WITH THE BLINDS OPEN AND LIGHT ON, WAITING UNTIL ITS DARK WILL PREVENT YOU FROM SEEING DIRT AND DUST AS CLEARLY.

DO THE LARGEST AND WORST TASK FIRST. IF YOU PUT OFF CLEANING A RANGE, SHOWER OR TOILET TO THE END YOU PROBABLY WON’T GIVE IT YOUR ALL. MAKE IT INTERESTING. TURN UP SOME MUSIC OR THROW ON AN AUDIO BOOK TO KEEP THINGS UPBEAT AND MOTIVATING. ENLIST FAMILY TO HELP PASS THE TIME. GIVE YOUR SHOWERHEAD A QUICK UPGRADE BY TIEING A BAGGIE OF VINEGAR AROUND IT AND LEAVING IT OVERNIGHT. JUST RINSE IN THE MORNING.

COVER STORY

Miramar Residents Tell Their Stories in Mini-Documentary “Together, We Are Miramar”

O

n April 8, the 20-minute story, “Together, We Are Miramar”, premieres at the Miramar Cultural Center, an event free and open to the public. The mini-documentary tells the story of the Miramar Cultural Center through the eyes of eight Miramar residents and their families. Participants were selected after a call to the community went out to Miramar residents and businesses prior to the start of the cultural center’s 2017-18 season. From October 2017 through March 2018, a camera crew followed the selected eight volunteers as they experienced visual art, live performances, and cultural events at MCC. For some, it was their first experience in their home town’s theater, and for others, the center evoked feelings of familiarity. The storytelling project, funded by the Community Foundation of Broward, is led by Director Kenny Riches and Project Director, Tameka Hobbs, who also serves on the Miramar Cultural Trust’s board. “It’s been great. I have gotten a chance to meet some wonderful and talented people who are sharing their gifts with the South Florida community, but who call Miramar home,” said Hobbs. Hobbs says the participating Miramar residents are from Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, and different regions of the United States, representing the diversity of the Miramar

community. As they experienced art gallery exhibit “Soaring: The Legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen in South Florida”, and live performances including Peter London’s “Fire in the Coal Pot”, Elvis Presley tribute “One Night in Memphis”, and “Black Angels Over Tuskegee”, the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, Hobbs says they started to see MCC through a new and appreciative lens. She added, “Everyone was blown away by the programs.” It became a personally touching experience for her, as well, the more she learned about each of the volunteers’ intimate stories. She looks forward to the greater Miramar community connecting with the individual stories in the same way, while also gaining a new appreciation for

Other events happening throughout the day include voice lessons with FGO, stage make-up application, a costume tour, and a 30-minute Florida Grand Opera performance.

3 Things You Should Know About Fad Diets & Bad Breath

F

AD DIETS GAIN POPULARITY BECAUSE THEY LET YOU SHED POUNDS quickly, but health professionals warn they often come with side effects, such as fatigue, nausea, headaches, constipation and dehydration. One additional side effect that doesn’t get as much attention, though, is this: They can cause bad breath.m“Dehydration is the key symptom related to fad diets that can result in halitosis,” says Dr. Harold Katz, a dentist, bacteriologist and developer of TheraBreath Dry Mouth Oral Rinse and Lozenges (therabreath.com). “When you’re dehydrated, your body doesn’t produce as much saliva. When you have less saliva, bacteria growth increases and causes bad breath.”

1. Fasting. When you fast – or follow a similar fad diet that focuses on consuming a single food or beverage – you’re more likely to become dehydrated, Katz says. “If you’re determined to continue fasting, just make sure you’re still drinking enough water to stay hydrated every day,” he says. “This will not only contribute to fresh breath, but will also contribute to your overall wellness.” 2. Ketosis. Ketosis is a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet that promises quick weight loss if you eat less than 20 grams of carbs in a single day, according to Environmental Nutrition. “It’s true that you can lose weight quickly through ketosis – which is the state your body going into when it doesn’t have enough carbs to feed off of – but you’re not improving your health,” Katz says. “Plus, halitosis can occur as a result of the chemicals released in the body to burn fat.” 3. Protein shakes. Some people attempt to lose weight by replacing meals with protein shakes. The Mayo Clinic reports that indeed can help reduce calories, which can lead to weight loss. But if you replace too many regular meals with the shake, you end up missing on the nutritional benefits of whole foods. “That’s not all,” Katz says. “Protein and dairy can cause your breath to smell. You should brush your teeth and use an oral rinse right after you drink a protein shake, or at the very least drink some water afterward to rinse out your mouth.” Instead of relying on a fad diet to lose excess pounds, Katz says, focus on changing your lifestyle habits as a whole. “If you exercise regularly and follow a well-balanced diet that’s loaded with nutrients from fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains, you can give your body the fuel it needs to thrive and maintain a healthy weight,” he says. “And your breath won’t be as likely to go rancid.” To Advertise in Miramar/Pembroke Pines City News, Please call 954-851-5056

FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Readers… BY MAYOR FRANK C. ORTIS, CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES

O

NCE AGAIN THE CITY OF PEMBROKE PINES WAS named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day foundation in honor of our commitment to effective urban forest management. Our city has achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a treecare ordinance, an annual community forestry budget and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. We are very proud of our city’s commitment to these goals. Our community benefits greatly when trees are properly planted and maintained. Trees not only bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, they also provide cleaner air, improve stormwater management and increase property values. I’d also like to share with everyone a meeting that was held last month with 40 clergy from throughout the city. We met for breakfast to learn what we can do to unite as a community, and address concerns shared by all. This breakfast meeting was scheduled weeks before Parkland’s horrific mass school shooting, however, it could not have come at a more needed and appropriate time. The honesty and passion of these community leaders regarding issues we’re facing today was awe-inspiring. We openly discussed the myriad of critical issues changing our world for the worse. I look forward to scheduling more such meetings in an effort to help us strengthen our foundation as a community in these very troubling times. On a more celebratory note, I’d like to invite everyone to come out and participate in our 58th Birthday on Saturday, April 28, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. -6:00 p.m. at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, 601 City Center Way. This year’s Pines Day event is bigger and better than ever with children's rides, live music, entertainment, pageants, food, games and, of course, our 10 foot birthday cake. Please visit pinesday.com for all event information or call our Special Events office at 954-392-2116. I encourage everyone to check our website at ppines.com for more events and special programs offered throughout the city. HOME & GARDEN

Landscaping Tips for Homeowners BY MICHELE LERNER, YOURHOME1SOURCE.COM

W

HETHER YOU OWN A NEWLY BUILT home with minimal landscaping, or you’re ready to improve the area around your current home with new landscaping ideas, it can be a daunting task to design your outdoor space. You can hire a landscape designer or work with a local nursery, but you should always start with an assessment of what you want or need and seek solutions from those with landscape design experience.

PLANNING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

»» Start by assessing where you’ll spend the most time: in the front of your house, the side or the back yard. »» Think about what’s there now, that you’d like to keep, and what areas need some enhancing. »» You may desire to increase privacy or reduce noise by adding a privacy fence, planting shrubs or tall plants, or perhaps add a water feature that provides a tranquil sound within your outdoor space.

TAKE YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES TO NEW LEVELS

»» Consider a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, maybe an outdoor kitchen, or add covered areas that allow you to be outside more often. »» Some items can be costly, so start with a simple fire pit and upgrade to something more elaborate in the future. »» Expand your home by transitioning indoor spaces to your natural surroundings. Open your home to woods, conservation areas, water areas or to your landscaped yard. »» Add a patio or deck – which may be covered – and access outdoor areas from central interior living areas such as a family room, kitchen or living area. These transition areas will make your home feel larger, more open and bright.

»» Do some research to identify the best sun-loving or shade-loving plants and flowers, whatever works best for your climate and natural setting, and begin to transform your landscape with beautiful designs and colors. »» Plan to purchase an umbrella or awning to provide shade for you and your guests, and shelter from rain. Providing overhead cover will allow you to be outdoors more often, on hot summer days, or during a light rain.

PLANTING WITH MAINTENANCE IN MIND

EXPANDING YOUR WISH LIST

»» Your outdoor space could include lighting. Enhance walkways and patios, or showcase trees and colorful plants around your home at night. Consider solarpowered lights, they’re affordable and easy to install.

»» Before you head to the nursery and spend a fortune on plants, think about how much you really like gardening. If it’s not your passion, be sure to ask about low-maintenance plants and about other solutions such as ground covers, decorative stones and even mulch to provide a clean look without

daily weeding. Nurseries often suggest purchasing native plants for your area since they’re easier to grow and care for.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE AND COMFORT

»» Part of your landscape planning should include outdoor furniture. Consider lounge chairs, a loveseat, a dining table or several smaller tables, or possibly a hammock. Adding outdoor heaters is ideal for cooler months.

Pines Light Up the Night 5K Run a Success!

B

EGINNERS TO TRUE RUNNERS PARTICIPATED IN THE PINES LIGHT UP the Night 5K Run, sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines and Davis Electric, on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. The night was aglow with neon lights and LED bracelets that changed with each mile the runners completed. There were 650 runners participating in the event which benefited the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation. Each runner received the LED light changing bracelet and a free T-shirt or razor tank. Festivities, which included a DJ, food trucks, free dessert samples and giveaways, were enjoyed after the run. "We are so happy that more than $17,000 was raised from the event," said Pembroke Pines Golf and Tennis Supervisor Traci Richards. "We're already starting to work on next year's event, opening up the registration to more runners and organizing even more fun activities." The Pembroke Pines Charter School System, created and built by the City of Pembroke Pines, is home to four elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school housed on five educational campuses through the City.
