LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT ost weekends during the late spring and early summer, you can find my wife and I at a baseball park somewhere in St. Louis or around the Midwest, attending baseball tournaments for one or both of our sons. While we love watching our boys play and compete and know that we are making wonderful memories, we do not get to spend as much time at the Club as we would like during baseball season. Fortunately, the baseball season is coming to an end, and we will have more time to take advantage of all that the MAC has to offer. I am particularly looking forward to a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon at the pool out West. I also eagerly anticipate the MAC Speakers Series event on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the Downtown Clubhouse. In this installment of the Speakers Series, we will get to hear from one of our fellow Members, Mr. Robert O’Loughlin. Bob is the Chairman and CEO Of Lodging and Hospitality Management (LHM), the owner and operator of some of the premier hotel and entertainment properties throughout St. Louis and the United States. He is a visionary leader who will speak about how he built his business, the future of the hospitality industry and his vision for St. Louis and our region. As of the writing of this column, limited tickets remain available. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity; you will not want to miss this event! Subsequent to submitting last month’s column for publication, I had the opportunity to share some opening remarks and recognize several long-time members of the Club at the 50-Year Member Dinner Celebration. That evening, we recognized and honored nine new inductees into the MAC’s 50-year Member Club. If that is not impressive enough, we also recognized four individuals who have been Members of the Club for over 70 years. Finally, we honored 21 Members of the MAC 150 Club. For those who are unaware, the MAC 150 Club is a special distinction for Members whose combined age and years of Membership equal at least 150! The stories I heard that evening about a lifetime of memories created at the MAC were truly extraordinary. I cannot think of a more tangible and personal example of fulfilling the MAC’s vision and mission than this group of loyal and dedicated Members. As I previewed in this space last month, the Governance Committee formed a task force to review our “house rules” and determine if any revisions are appropriate. The final recommendations and results from

M

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

the work of this task force will be presented to the Board of Governors for approval shortly. In the interim, one of the direct and immediate outcomes of the work of this task force is an emphasis on enforcing the Club’s established dress codes and rules concerning cell phone usage in our dining facilities, particularly the Jack Buck Grille downtown and the 1903 Bar at the West Clubhouse. We have placed more prominent signage regarding the rules at the front of these spaces, and we are asking our staff to be more diligent in enforcing the rules. None of these steps will work without a commitment from our Members. Please be mindful of the rules and ask your invited guests to do the same. Finally and most importantly, please be attentive, helpful and respectful to our staff members who are being charged with reminding our Members and guests of the rules. As I described last month, the Human Resources department recognizes one Downtown and West employee each quarter for their outstanding efforts. Our exceptional staff members work diligently to provide the best Club experience possible. To honor our hardworking staff, I will be highlighting employees who have received the distinguished employee award and other dedicated employees. Margaret Shapiro Title: Assistant Tennis Professional Start Date: 2/11/2015 Family: Husband Max Shapiro and baby Markus What is one thing most people don’t know about you? I collect hotel room cards to help me remember where I have traveled. Thank you for your service to the Club, Margaret! Your dedication to enhancing our Members’ Club experiences is one of many reasons that the MAC is the foremost private club in the St. Louis region. We are proud to have you at the MAC! Members, enjoy the balance of your summer, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER recently returned from the City Athletic Club Manager’s meeting in New York. As a result of the pandemic, it was the first time we were able to gather in two years. Throughout the two-day event, we had plenty to discuss regarding the current state of our clubs and the challenges we’re all facing. While attendees were from all different regions, we discovered many similarities with clubs across the country. The presiding theme of the conference is best described in a quote from Gandhi, “The future depends on the present.” As we reflect on the challenges facing our Club today, we are always exploring ways in which we can position the Missouri Athletic Club for tomorrow’s success. Like many private clubs, Membership has been a strong point for the MAC throughout the pandemic. As new Members sought a “safe haven” in a smaller community setting, the MAC reached its highest Membership level in over a decade! While the pandemic may have positively affected our Membership, it took a toll on other aspects of the Club. After the pandemic’s initial shutdown resulted in labor reduction, we are dedicated to addressing the gap in the staffing shortages we face. As our focus shifts to recruitment and retention, we learn that our labor pool has newfound expectations from a potential new employer: flexible work schedules, signing bonuses, employee assistance programs and more. While the MAC already employs many of these strategies, we’re always looking for ways to improve our appeal to new and existing employees. As you’re probably aware, the MAC strives to not only be the foremost private Club in St. Louis for our Members, but also our exceptional staff. We seek to become an “Employer of Choice” for employees in our region, giving us the opportunity to hire the most qualified, top-notch employees for our organization. How do we do that? By offering programs and incentives to attract and retain the best talent! Several other clubs have adopted employee assistance programs to accomplish

I

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

this goal. Our Membership base is an untapped resource of potential ways to incentivize our hardworking staff members. For example, if a Member who owns a restaurant participates in the program, the MAC may offer gift certificates to recipients of the quarterly distinguished employee award. Perhaps a Member who owns a gym could participate by offering discounted memberships to MAC staff. We are continuously finding ways to differentiate the MAC from other employers by providing our staff the same quality of service and benefits that we seek to offer our Members. Lastly, a commonality shared among Clubs all over the nation is finding a balance between the Member and staff experience. Budgets, staffing, retention and ultimately, the economy’s current financial situation are top of mind when aligning our goals for the future. In addition to overall inflation, costs for labor, food and beverage, delivery, health insurance and property maintenance are just a few of the things that have increased significantly in recent months at the MAC. As a Club, we must carefully consider how to combat rising costs while providing the Club experience that Members know and love. As we strive further to attract exceptional people and give the ultimate Club experience, we appreciate your patience with the changes you see throughout the Club. Through each trial and triumph experienced in the past, the MAC has always stood the test of time. I have no doubt that through the dedicated efforts of both staff and Members, we will find the best balance for our Club. Our goal is that each step we take today will continue to improve the future Club experience for Members and staff alike. See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

THE MAC: WHERE WOMEN BELONG

Now more than ever, the Missouri Athletic Club is the place to be. Membership is reaching record numbers for the first time in a decade, and Members are enjoying shared experiences in the spirit of excellence, service and tradition. Almost 2,400 female Members use Club facilities today, and nearly 400 have joined the Club in the past two years. Women in all stages of life are discovering that valuable female fellowship can be found right here at the MAC! Whether a Member wants to create new friendships, expand their professional network, discover other moms with active kids, enhance their health and fitness routine or explore new ways to enjoy the Club in their free time, the MAC is where women belong. It’s been 34 years since welcoming Olympian Jackie Joiner-Kersee as the first female Member and more than a decade since founding the Women’s Initiative Group (WIG). Over the years, female Membership has grown at the Club, increasing the relevance and significance of the group. WIG has become instrumental in helping women, both new and long-time Members, to feel welcomed and represented at the Club. Through these efforts, women’s thoughts and voices have become ingrained into everyday Club life and leadership by

dedicated female board Members, staff members and frequent Club-goers. In addition to fostering an inclusive community for women, the WIG hosts a variety of events to engage female Membership. Annual signature events, such as the Women of Distinction Luncheon and Holiday Sip & Shop, bring women together to celebrate each other’s achievements at festive, social gatherings. Newly-elected Governor Jodi Petersen has been involved as Chair of the Women’s Initiative Group (WIG) for three years, leading a group of active women behind the planning of these meaningful events. “We recognize that with the number of female Members of all ages frequenting the MAC, we have a resurgence of interest in our original purpose to promote connection and engagement amongst female Members – and to ultimately recruit more great women to our valuable female community by joining the Club. This really is a place where women can enjoy and thrive.” WIG LEADERSHIP The WIG Steering Council is comprised of a core group of female Members that plan events and guide WIG involvement. Women interested in taking an active role in ensuring female presence at the Club are invited to join the WIG Steering Council. In addition to its signature events, the WIG hosts monthly Ladies’ Lunches, Coffees and Happy Hours to encourage female Members to meet one another and learn about the many ways women utilize and enhance the Club. Members like Lauren Hieger ( joined in 2021) and Laura White ( joined in 2015) have attended these lunches and coffees over the last several months, each looking to engage with fellow female Members over shared interests. The casual and frequent format of these social gatherings affords busy women the

opportunity to regularly join fellow female Members at the Club without commitment. Member Teresa Wheeler ( joined in 2003) is new to the WIG Steering Council and shares, “It is exciting to see the Club grow and enhance female Membership through [efforts started by] the Women’s Initiative Group. The WIG Steering Council is planning a variety of engaging activities to connect our community of female Members of all ages and interests. As a Member since 2003, the female Membership has grown significantly. We now have a great opportunity to network, informally mentor and share in social time to capitalize on this momentum.” All Ladies’ events and WIG-sponsored activities across the Club are open for all women MAC Members to attend. To learn more about these opportunities, visit the “Women at the MAC” webpage under the “Social” tab on the MAC website. To learn more about the WIG Steering Council, please contact WIG Staff Liaison Kara Kelpe at kkelpe@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4408.

Associates Welcome New President The Associates’ Council is a leadership group within the Missouri Athletic Club for Members 30 and under. All Associate Members are encouraged to join the Council. Within the Council, five officers are elected annually: President, Vice President, Membership Chair, Social Chair and Communications Chair. Recently, Margaret Pate White was elected the newest Associates President. The Council is responsible for several key components, including: F Promoting the involvement of the Club’s Associate Members through all aspects of engagement within the MAC. F Hosting four signature events throughout the year, targeted to Associate Members but open to all. F Representing the Associates on the Club’s Standing Committees (Finance, Planning, Membership and Governance) that help guide the Club’s operations and updating

The Associates aim to provide more opportunities for Member involvement throughout the year, whether through the Council directly or through other casual events sprinkled throughout the calendar. This year, the Associates have introduced a social activity after each monthly meeting in addition to their signature events. Thanks to the Jack Buck Grille staff, the Associates were treated to a craft beer tasting at the June meeting. Associates can look forward to athletic events like Associates Squash Night, sporting watch parties, varieties of wine and food tastings and more. For more information about joining the Associates, visit mac-stl.org > Social > CWCs & Special Interest Groups to fill out the interest form. Members can also contact Margaret Pate White at margaretpatewhite@gmail.com.

“I am so excited to continue my involvement with the Club and the Associates as the new Council President. I joined the MAC a little over two years ago and initially came to my first Council meeting to meet some new people and get the ‘behind-the-scenes scoop’ of the Club. Over the last two years, I certainly have made some amazing friends and great connections with our world-class staff and Club leaders. Before taking on this role, I served as the Membership Chair of the Associates’ Council. In progressing to this new role, I know that I have some big shoes to fill! I want to give a special shoutout to Sarah Gibbs and Kyle Jacobsmeyer, who have been great role models as previous presidents to watch and lean on as I take this position. I am enthusiastic about what our Council Officers have in store for the next year.” — Margaret Pate White, Associates President

AUGUST IS

FOUNDATIONS’ MONTH As the MAC embarks on its seventh annual Foundations’ Month, our successes can only be attributed to the support of our very generous Club Members. Philanthropy is alive and well at the MAC! 16 F CHERRY DIAMOND

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER

Leaving a Legacy

Throughout the month, our Members will have the opportunity to give to our 501(c)3 Foundations by adding a donation to your chit when you dine at the Club. This is an easy and convenient way to support our Foundations. The MAC’s future depends on YOU, and we sincerely appreciate your support. All donations are tax-deductible. SPORTS FOUNDATION The mission of the Sports Foundation is to further, encourage and recognize outstanding achievements in the field of athletics and, in connection therewith, to select for public recognition those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to and achievements in the field of athletics. CHARITABLE SOCIETY FOR CHILDREN The Missouri Athletic Club’s Charitable Society for Children (CSC) is an extension of the Sports Foundation and a Club Within the Club. Its mission is to provide financial assistance to local St. Louis children’s charities and to give time and resources to the community. The charities are nominated by Members and employees of the MAC. The nominations are presented to the Charitable Society for Children Committee, which then chooses the three beneficiaries for the year. The CSC voted and decided on Covenant House, Girls on the Run and Kellsie’s Hope Foundation to be this year’s sponsored charities.

Backpack Safety from SSM Health Physical Therapy

Is your child’s backpack too heavy? IN A STUDY CONDUCTED BY SPINE MAGAZINE: • 80 percent of surveyed children said their backpacks are heavy. • 65 percent felt their backpacks caused fatigue. • 46 percent said they had back pain due to a heavy load.

IF YOUR CHILD LEANS FORWARD TO CARRY A BACKPACK … IT’S TOO HEAVY! WHAT CAN YOU DO? • Load the heaviest items closest to the child’s back. • Arrange books so they won’t slide around in the backpack. • Check what your child carries to school and brings home; don’t carry things unnecessary to the day’s activities. • If the backpack is too loaded, your child can hand carry a book or other item. • Consider using a book bag on wheels if your child’s school allows it. • Use lightweight alternatives, for example, use pocket folders instead of a three-ring binder. Never let your child carry more than 15% of his or her body weight. This means a child who weighs 100 pounds shouldn’t carry a loaded backpack heavier than 15 pounds.

HOW TO PROPERLY WEAR A BACKPACK: • Both shoulder straps should always be worn. • Choose a backpack with wide, padded straps. • Do not sling the backpack over one shoulder. • The pack should fit snugly to the child’s back. • Adjust the straps so that the bottom of the pack rests in the curve of the lower back. • Don’t bend over, instead squat, using both knees and keep the back in its normal inward curve. • Never let the backpack rest more than four inches below the child’s waistline. • Wear the waist belt if the backpack has one to evenly distribute the weight. If your child complains of chronic neck and back pain, physical therapy can help. At SSM Health Physical Therapy, our physical therapists are trained to integrate strengthening exercises, posture education and manual techniques to help alleviate pain and keep your child moving!

Contact us for more information about the outpatient therapy services offered at SSM Health Physical Therapy, or to schedule a backpack screening!

ACHIEVE FITNESS AND WELLNESS GOALS with Metabolic Testing Whenever the topic of cardio comes up, there always seems to be a difference of opinion. Many will ask, “How long should a cardio session last?” “How much is too much cardio?” “What is the best type of cardio?” The answers are crucial, as they will depend on what a person wants to achieve. For example, the answers will be drastically different for an individual wanting more aerobic capacity and overall output versus someone trying to drop body fat. Instead, Members should ask, “Do I need cardiovascular training for a sport or performance?” or “Do I need cardio for body composition changes?” For some, the

most effective cardio for retaining muscle is simply walking. HIIT (high-intensity interval training) done with extreme intensity is very effective for fat loss as well; the keyword is “extreme.” Often, the “middle ground,” or just doing cardio for the sake of doing cardio for long periods, can increase body fat due to burning muscle. The Missouri Athletic Club fitness staff can help determine where Members need to be through metabolic assessment. The active test will explain what heart rate zone is needed to burn carbs for endurance training, burn fat for body composition and

the amount of cardio needed. The resting metabolic test will explain how many calories are burned in a day at rest. The two tests help determine calorie restrictions or additions necessary to achieve fitness and wellness goals. The combination provides optimal results!
