LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT elcome to 2021! I hope you and your families enjoyed a happy and healthy holiday season! Despite its challenges, 2020 brought us closer to our families, reacquainted us with our homes and demonstrated the value of our Club. The MAC provided an indispensable home away from home for many of us. Although our Club experience looked and felt different last year, we came together, persevered and kept many traditions alive while other aspects of our lives were disrupted. Having traveled this 2020 pandemic journey together, the relationships among our Members and with our employees have strengthened. Our employees displayed their commitment and sacrificed. Our Members stayed connected, enhanced their relationships with each other and took care of our employees. We learned to appreciate every opportunity for fellowship. Because of this, we know our Club will emerge stronger and more resilient than before the pandemic. As we enter 2021 with the promise of vaccines and an end to COVID-19, we anticipate many of our traditional events. We'll be celebrating the Preservation Foundation Gala, Boxing Night, Hermann Trophy and many other beloved MAC events in the coming months. Perhaps in April, we will even meet in the Jack Buck Grille as we await the shuttle to the Cardinals game. While a considerable amount of our Board and staff’s efforts in 2020 focused on crisis management, we continued to consider the Club’s future. Knowing the fog of COVID will lift, we stabilized and secured the Club, then pushed forward to enhance the Club’s strategic planning and capital project processes. As we seek to return to a thriving environment, we will allocate our resources in a plan-full manner to improve the Club experience and sustain the Club for the long term.

W

As a leading institution, we aim to make a difference in the future of our community. We initiated a Civic Engagement Task Force to leverage the influence of our Club and its Members to make St. Louis and the surrounding community a better place. Our Diversity and Inclusion Task Force will pursue our commitment to making the MAC a more inclusive place for all Members. We established the Downtown Security Task Force (DSTF) to ensure Members, employees and guests feel safe visiting the Downtown Clubhouse and that the Downtown Clubhouse remains a vibrant and relevant fixture in the City of St. Louis. Many have asked if I regret being President during a pandemic. Would I like a do-over? Just the opposite. I am proud to be associated with an organization with such committed and engaged constituents. The bonds we forged and experiences we endured this past year will last a long time. We owe a debt of support to prior leadership who positioned the Club to weather the storm of the pandemic. The decisions to acquire the West Clubhouse, expand the reciprocal club offering and affiliate with Glen Echo exemplify the foresight that broadened the value of our membership and will enable the MAC to perpetuate. Thank you for your commitment to the MAC. Together we will ensure that our Club comes roaring back and continues its rich history as the premier athletic, social and dining Club in the St. Louis region. F

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER s we start a new year, we look back on all we overcame as an MAC community in 2020. We adapted to ever-changing guidelines for both Clubhouses in the COVID-19 era, and the MAC spirit remained as strong as ever! The support from our MAC Members was incredible from the very beginning of this pandemic. When we made the very difficult decision to furlough 370 employees with the initial shutdown, Members really stepped up with the Employee Relief Fund, which brought all 370 great assistance in those crazy initial uncertain times. Months went on and we gradually began to reopen in May as our MAC family of Members eagerly got back using the Club. Member traffic increased through both Clubhouses, and we were able to bring many of our furloughed employees and get back to work. The rest of the summer went well as we started climbing our way back. Our new fiscal year started in September. Budgeting for the new year was a challenge but so far so good as we have nailed it. We had a solid September, October and start to November, but unfortunately, with the surprise re-shutdown of indoor dining in St. Louis County, we had to furlough the majority of our West Clubhouse food and beverage staff right before the holidays. But the MAC Members once again showed their spirit of giving by supporting these furloughed employees. The Board of Directors and our human resources department worked together to organize a list of nearly 30 newly furloughed employees who have kids and put together a giving tree. Governor Cheri

A

McLaughlin took the project head-on in conjunction with our Board of Directors, and within half a day of sending the note out to the Board, every one of the names was adopted. All the kids who were affected by this new round of furloughs were able to enjoy a little extra holiday cheer thanks to our Board of Directors. A note was sent out to our Members explaining the situation, and within days an additional $28,000 was raised and divvied up among those families affected. But the MAC spirit didn’t stop there! At the annual Past Presidents Dinner Dec. 2, 19 of our Past Presidents got together in the Art Lounge to talk about the state of the Club. When someone suggested pitching in additional money for the furloughed employees on behalf of the Past Presidents, they were all in! Our Past Presidents are so generous and loyal to the Club, and we are so grateful for their continued support of the MAC community. Though we had our ups and downs in 2020, the spirit of the MAC is alive going into 2021 – a year that will surely bring brighter days. With vaccines rolling out across the country, and all of the therapeutics now in play, we can look forward to the MAC and world getting back to some sense of normal in 2021. Let’s keep our spirits strong and stay healthy as we move into the new year! F

SECURITY In the latter months of 2020, several new efforts were implemented to keep Members safer in and around the Downtown Clubhouse. In November and December issues of the Cherry Diamond, we reported that new LEDs had been installed in the parking garage, and additional cameras had been installed throughout the Clubhouse. The Downtown Security Task Force (DSTF) was formed, and further initiatives continue to be explored. One of these initiatives includes hiring uniformed police officers to greet people and ensure the safety of those walking from the parking garage to the Lucas Street entrance of the Clubhouse, which is the only entrance open at this time. These officers greeted Members and guests at events like Breakfast with Santa, the Jack Buck Sports Awards and the Wine Society’s Holiday Wine Dinner. GM Wally Smith said there has been a great response to having these officers at bigger functions. Security supervisor Fred Nelson reports that within the area of the Club, there were no crimes reported in the months of October and November, and overall crime in the Downtown St. Louis area is down 19 percent. Smith surmises this is because of increased efforts in the Downtown community regarding control measures, bike police, the sheriff’s department assisting, along with the traffic control barriers that are in place on several key streets throughout the City. The MAC administration and DSTF are continuing to explore efforts to maintain the security of the Clubhouse and the area around it. Members are encouraged to come visit and enjoy the variety of amenities available, including dining and fitness facilities. The Downtown Clubhouse is open and in full operation according to St. Louis City safety protocol. Secure Your PA RT N E R S H I P STAT U S The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago, and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One sideeffect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect has especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F Effective Oct. 1, all Members in the

Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner should resign or go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F With each new Member referred to the Club, the referring Member will receive a $500 Club credit on their statement. F There is no limit on the number of incentives a sponsoring Member can earn and more than one new Member can be referred for a credit in any given month. F A referral, as a referral credit, will not be awarded after the prospective Member has been approved by the Board of Governors. F The referring Member must act as a Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. The Military History Book Club will begin its 2021 campaign at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at the Downtown Clubhouse. Raese Simpson will lead the discussion of “No Ordinary Dog” by Navy SEAL Will Chesney and Joe Layden. “No Ordinary Dog” is the true story of heroic sacrifice and loving friendship between a decorated member of the SEAL Teams and his famous military working dog, Cairo. As a young boy in the small town of Lumberton, Texas, Chesney had one goal: to become a Navy SEAL. Despite not being an athlete or an outdoorsman, he demonstrated a resilience and a resolve that got him through the intense physical training regimen of combat conditioning and survival skills required to become one of America’s most elite soldiers as a SEAL Team operator. After attending a combat assault dog demonstration, Chesney’s life and career changed forever when he volunteered to become a military working dog handler. Partnered with Cairo, a Belgian Malinois/ Shepherd mix rigorously trained to enter war zones, detect explosives, and attack enemy combatants, Chesney served two deployments as a handler in Afghanistan. Together, he and Cairo fought the war on terrorism on numerous campaigns and hundreds of missions. In 2011, they were assigned to a secret mission in Pakistan known as Operation Neptune Spear, where his SEAL Team successfully eliminated Osama bin Laden. More than brothers in arms, Chesney and Cairo forged a bond in training and on the battlefield that grew even stronger between missions. And when Cairo’s active-duty status was reduced due to age and injuries sustained under fire, Will maintained their relationship, determined to adopt and care for his best friend when the military retired him. But when Chesney was severely wounded by a grenade during a mission, it would fall to Cairo to become his caretaker. Only Cairo’s companionship, love, and loyalty would remind Will of his self-worth, give him a purpose, and help him to heal. Chesney served as a SEAL Team operator and dog handler. He participated in Operation Neptune Spear, which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden. Chesney received a Silver Star and a Purple Heart, and now helps veterans who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. Layden is an award-winning journalist and writer. His books include the New York Times bestseller “As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride.”

Wine Society Hosts Napa Valley Holiday Wine Dinner Wildfires in California continue to do damage to the Napa Valley with vineyards being burned and others with grapes affected by the intense smoke in the region. As such, the MAC’s Wine Society supported their Napa Valley friends and wine vendors by featuring Napa Valley wines at this year’s holiday wine dinner. On Wednesday, Dec. 9, Members gathered at the Downtown Clubhouse for this event. The menu that evening featured a Sparkling Wine produced by Paula Kornell during the hors d’oeuvres course, a 2018 Forager Chardonnay during the first course, a split of ALTA Napa Valley Quatreaux Cb Franc and Mi Sueño Cabernet Sauvignon for the entrée and Permartin Pedro Ximenez NV Spanish Sherry for dessert. ack by popular demand, the printed magazine has finally returned to Members' mailboxes, and the MAC is happy to share the newest iteration of the magazine with everyone. For more than a century, Members have relied on the magazine to keep up with Club news, upcoming events, Member happenings and more. In August of 1903, one month prior to the Club’s grand opening, the MAC published its first magazine. In the inaugural magazine, Club President Marmaduke outlined the mission statement for the Club’s new publication. “The primary purpose of the Missouri Athletic Club Journal is to chronicle events pertaining to the Club, and, as the Club

with the rest of the Club despite the closures that have occurred. Throughout the years, the magazine has gone through several iterations including three names: the Missouri Athletic Club Journal in 1903, Ye Clubbe in 1906 and, finally, the Cherry Diamond in 1916, which was named in honor of the Club’s renowned logo. As technology has advanced over the past century, so has the Club magazine. Illustrations and black and white photos have given way to color photos and computer-generated graphics. The Club's magazine was first produced in black and white until 1997 when eight four-color pages were produced. In 2000, the number of color

which it kept until this year. Our current size, 9.5 by 11.5 inches, allows for larger photos, features and fonts to help enhance our Members’ reading experience. While the Club publications have been primarily focused on MAC-related activities, subjects pertaining to the "interests of St. Louis" have also been covered. The 1904 Olympics and World's Fair; the historic Lindbergh flight; the opening of the Planetarium, Arch, Busch Stadium, and Edward Jones Dome; the revitalization of Forest Park; and the American Legion Centennial Celebration are just a few of the civic events that have been chronicled in the pages of MAC magazines.

expects to exert a potential influence in fostering wholesome athletics and contribute to the social and material interests of St. Louis, the need for this journal is apparent.” Since the opening of the Missouri Athletic Club (called the Missouri Athletic Association at the time), the Club’s magazine has continued to uphold the mission statement. pages grew to 16 — half the pages in the magazine. In January 2003, to kick off the Club's centennial year, the Cherry Diamond made a change to full color. The Club publication has come in a variety of sizes as well. The Journal measured 7 by 10 inches and Ye Clubbe was a small booklet, measuring 4.5 by 6 inches. In the 1950s the Cherry Diamond adopted an oversized 9-by-12-inch format before returning to an 8.5-by-11 format in 1980,

The Cherry Diamond remains an essential communication outlet for Club Members, although the rapid evolution in technology led some prognosticators to predict the demise of printed publications. While the magazine is available online for those who prefer to read it in a digital format, the membership survey results indicate that the printed Cherry Diamond is still the preferred source of Club information for most. Building on TRADITION S

ince 2007, the MAC’s historic Downtown Clubhouse has been honored with a place on the National Register of Historic Places. The recognition came nearly 14 years ago, though

many of those who have passed through the building’s corridors have understood its historical significance in the St. Louis community for decades before the Clubhouse made the list.

16 F CHERRY DIAMOND

The Downtown Clubhouse as it stands today at the corner of Washington Avenue and 4th Street was erected in 1916. In the 100-plus years since then, the City of St. Louis has evolved with the changing framework of society and technological advancements. But the MAC has remained true to its mission of being the premier athletic, dining, and social club for business, professional, and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis region. Andrew Weil, the executive director of the Landmarks Association of St. Louis, noted in a 2019 issue of the Cherry Diamond that over the decades the MAC building has stood at 405 Washington Ave., downtown has “transformed” around it. “Washington Avenue rose and fell as the city’s garment district. The department stores thrived for decades and then closed one by one. The riverfront was cleared and replaced with the Arch. Hop Alley was cleared and replaced with Busch Stadium, before it was cleared and replaced by another Busch Stadium. The streetcars — which once were the lifeblood of the central business district — were discontinued, and the shoe industry largely moved overseas. More than half a million people left St. Louis City. Through more than a

century of change, the MAC has remained true to its roots, earning its reputation as one of our community’s most stalwart institutions and an icon of downtown.” The announcement of the addition to the National Register of Historic Places was made in May 2007 at a press conference in the Art Lounge. KMOX personality Charlie Brennan, a St. Louis historian, served as emcee for the press conference, according to an issue of the Cherry Diamond from that year. “The Missouri Athletic Club is a remarkable St. Louis asset and now a part of the magnificent revitalization of our downtown,” Brennan is quoted saying. “Members from almost every leading St. Louis company make a difference at the MAC and ultimately, in our city. We’re fortunate that the efforts of the MAC extend beyond its walls. The MAC has a rich and meaningful legacy, one that will help us go forward.” City of St. Louis mayor at the time, Francis Slay, also had complimentary remarks to observe the occasion. “This is a well-earned recognition for a business, athletic, social and philanthropic club that has been a wonderful neighbor in downtown St. Louis. Not only is the MAC a wonderful building architecturally, it is the gathering place of so many leaders continued »

THE NATIONAL REGISTER The National Register is administered by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources State Historic Preservation Office. The list encompasses hundreds of cultural resources that have been deemed worthy of preserving, including significant places to American history, architecture, archeology, engineering and culture. Such places can include districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION First and foremost, places registered on the National Register must possess integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling and association. Once these qualities have been determined, listings must also be one or more of the following: F Associated with events making significant contributions to broad patterns of our history; F Associated with the lives of significant people in the past; F Embody the characteristics of type, period, method of construction; represent the work of a master, possess high artistic value; or represent significant and distinguishing entity that components lack distinction; F Yield or have yield information that is important to history or prehistory. Once honored on the National Register, listings are eligible for many benefits including honors recognition, consideration in planning for federal, federally licensed and federally assisted projects, tax provisions and qualifications for federal grants. who have helped shape our great city. The MAC has been a St. Louis crown jewel for more than 100 years.” The Downtown Clubhouse joined other noteworthy St. Louis structures on the influential list, including the Old Courthouse and the Wainwright building. In the years since this honor, preserving the historic integrity of the Downtown Clubhouse has become more important than ever. Thanks to the efforts of MAC past presidents Kim Tucci, Don Gunn and Gerry Ortbals, the Preservation Foundation was founded and granted non-profit status in 2007. Since its inception, the Preservation Foundation has focused mostly on inward projects that have helped maintain the infrastructure of the Downtown Clubhouse. In recent years, the Foundation has helped fund a complete overhaul of the clubhouse’s HVAC system through the PACE project. Smaller projects include renovations of bathrooms, hotel rooms and life safety compliance. Most recently, extensive work was done on the exterior of the Downtown Clubhouse to restore and preserve it for future generations. Though the City was largely shut down due to the pandemic when the project was due to kick off mid-spring, specialists got to work on the east and south elevations of the building doing tuckpointing, power washing, restoring stained glass windows and removing harmful materials. When the project wrapped up near the end of 2020, the building was sparkling and restored to its original architectural beauty. This huge undertaking was made possible by Members’ generous donations and a $200,000 grant from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation. Funds raised during the Building on Tradition Campaign will help preserve the historic integrity and magnificence of the Downtown Clubhouse for years to come. This year’s Preservation Foundation Gala will honor and thank Members who have donated to the restoration efforts and celebrate the completion of the months-long project at the end of 2020. F

JACK BUCK SPORTS AWARDS

MAC SPORTS EVENT

Top 50 Sports Personalities of the Last 50 Years Revealed This past year was unlike any other in sports history, with abbreviated seasons, postseason bubbles and teams playing in empty venues. So rather than vote for a 2020 Sports Personality of the Year, the Missouri Athletic Club decided this was a good year to take a look back at the previous halfcentury to coincide with the golden anniversary of the award. In October, local sports fans voted online for the Top 50 St. Louis Sports Personalities of the Past 50 Years (1970-2020). It was an open ballot and not limited to former winners of the MAC Sports Personality of the Year Award, although they are certainly well represented on the list. On Dec. 8, the MAC revealed the results at the Jack Buck Sports Awards, which took place at the Downtown Clubhouse. KMOX Sports personality and MAC Member Tom Ackerman was the emcee of the night, assisted by panelists Chris Kerber, St. Louis Blues announcer, and Ricky Horton, St. Louis Cardinals announcer. The list of top personalities was unveiled on the big screen in the Missouri Room with trivia listed about each person before their name was revealed. This format had Members shouting out their guesses, helping them to engage with the event. To break up the lists, the MAC announced other award winners. This year, the Carl. O Bauer award for the best local amateurs went to SLU basketball players Hasahn French and Jordan Goodwin. Although they were unable to make it to the ceremony due to having a game scheduled for the same time, both French and Goodwin, along with their coach, Travis Ford, sent in a video describing what receiving this award means to them. The next award recipient was long-time St. Louis anthem

singer, first for the Rams, then the Blues, Charles Glenn, who made it to the Club to receive the Jack Buck Award. During his speech, the beloved St. Louis figure shared his love of this city, its sports and his family. He also went on to explain his struggles with multiple sclerosis and his foundation that works toward finding a cure. His speech was met with thunderous applause HOMETOWN HERO PAT MAROON from the audience. Finally, the Hometown Hero Award was presented to two-time Stanley Cup winner and Oakville High School graduate, Pat Maroon. Much to the attendees’ excitement, Maroon was able to attend the event, along with his parents, siblings, wife and son. Then, Maroon took the stage, explaining what it means to be a hometown hero and thanking the fans, his coaches and family for supporting him. The banquet concluded with the reveal of the Top 10 list with "The Golden Brett," Brett Hull, finishing in the top spot.

WHAT MAKES A TOP SPORTS PERSONALITY? Is it performing at a consistent level over a long period of time? Is it an athlete who flashed spectacular performances during a short period of time? Is it an individual who delivered in the clutch or helped bring a championship to St. Louis? Is it a dynamic personality who is popular with the fans? If you asked 10 sports fans, you would likely get 10 different answers on how to best define it. When Jack Buck created the award in 1970, he left the definition of "Sports Personality" open-ended and put it in the hands of the fans. The top 50 list has been revealed, so let the debate begin! Some very deserving sports personalities did not make the list, and reasonable arguments can be made about the order in which the sports personalities were ranked. Those conversations continued in the bar and on online forums following the banquet. One thing that cannot be disputed after seeing the names on the Top 50 list is that St. Louis sports fans have been treated to an impressive list of Hall of Famers, All-Stars and coaching legends who have provided us with countless great memories to last a lifetime.

Finally, golf pro Maria Palozola taught a special half-day camp on Monday, Dec. 28 for children in grades K-6. Next, the MAC held Winter Break Camp on Dec. 18, 22 and 23. As someone who loves working out in a gym setting with personal trainer, Courtney Hutt, having to switch over to virtual personal training was a leap of faith. But as with most things, Courtney has far exceeded my expectations. She ensures each session is just as personalized, effective, and engaging as in-person training. This is true even with little to no equipment in my home gym. Virtual training has been a convenient way to remain motivated and accountable throughout the pandemic and has definitely helped me fight the quarantine 15!” — Colin Tully

MAC Apollos Sing in the Holiday Season Holly, Jolly Holiday Breakfast

The MAC Apollos kicked off the season with jolly ol’ St. Nick and caroling with friends. Friends and co-workers gathered for a special after-work cocktail. Beginning at 5 p.m., Members began trickling into the Jack Buck Grille for a pre-event drink and cigar with the Apollos. After a bit of mingling, members of the Apollos slowly made their way toward Apollos Director Marc Strathman and the piano strategically placed in between the Grille and Rendezvous Room. They broke into favorite carols such as “Jingle Bells,” and “Silent Night” while Members came to watch. The night was made even more special when Santa made an appearance and joined in on the merriment. ABOVE FROM TOP: APOLLOS GATHER AROUND DIRECTOR MARC STRATHMAN WHILE SINGING CHRISTMAS CAROLS; PAST PRESIDENTS MARK NEILL, GERRY ORTBALS AND MIKE HACKETT POSE FOR A PICTURE WITH SANTA CLAUS.

Each year, the annual Breakfast with Santa provides holiday joy for the whole family. This year was no exception as children and parents visited with Santa and Mrs. Claus on Dec. 5, 12 and 19 for the annual Breakfast with Santa Event. Each date, the Missouri Room was packed for Breakfast with Santa as children lined up for their photos and enjoyed a full and delicious breakfast buffet while hearing the Apollos sing carols. The train display was running each morning and filled guests with spirit at each turn. TOP ROW (L-R): KATIE, AVERY AND SHEA BLANTON; MOLLY AND LENNON DODGE. Christmas at the Club Although this year looked very different for the Club and Members, Christmas came to the MAC just the same. On Thursday, Dec. 24, the Downtown Clubhouse hosted a Christmas Eve Dinner. This year, dinner included a buffet featuring striploin with peppercorn sauce, roast turkey, mahi-mahi with pineapple relish and more. The next day, the MAC also hosted a Christmas dinner with a buffet of tenderloin with shiitake mushroom sauce, Miller bone-in ham, salmon with fresh pico and lemon cream sauce and more. Musical entertainment for both events was provided by Jenn Asia. For Members who wanted to enjoy Christmas from the comforts of their own homes, the West Clubhouse offered Christmas To Go. Chef Charles gave Members the choice of herb-roasted chickens with black truffle jus, roasted ham with citrus bourbon glaze and prime rib with red wine au jus. Each meal came with a poached pear salad, cheesy hashbrown casserole, grilled baby carrots, mapleroasted spaghetti squash, lobster bisque, dinner rolls and old-fashioned bread pudding.

Christmas Cookies To Go While many of the holiday events were able to go off without a hitch in this unusual time, the West Clubhouse was unable to host their usual Family Brunch with Santa. However, Santa made a special trip out to the West Clubhouse just the same to deliver Christmas cookie kits. The idea was sparked by West Clubhouse Catering Manager Emma Pranger and Janet Jones, who wanted to make sure families that normally use the West Clubhouse had the opportunity to get into the Christmas spirit and visit with St. Nick! WEST CLUBHOUSE PROGRAMS MANAGER JOY HOLDMEIER HAS HER CHILDREN DEMONSTRATE HOW TO DECORATE THEIR CHRISTMAS COOKIES.

BOXING

HAPPY

Remains Club Staple

Summer! Mark your calendars for the upcoming MAC Happy Hours. In addition to serving up great drink specials, these events are a great opportunity to meet new members and introduce friends and colleagues to the Club. No reservations are required. West (Poolside) Saturday, June 14 Saturday, July 12 Saturday, Aug. 23 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Downtown Wednesday, June 25 Wednesday, July 23 Thursday, Aug. 14 5-8 p.m.

Since the Club opened its doors in 1903, the MAC has strived to uphold important traditions that make this organization unique. Whether Members believe it or not, one of these esteemed traditions is holding boxing matches at the Club, which one article depicts happening as early as 1921. A century ago, in January, the MAC (or Missouri Athletic Association as it was known at the time) hosted a “Regular Madison Garden Affair” in the ballroom of the Downtown Clubhouse. The success of the contests was documented in the Globe-Democrat at the time, who said “Matchmakers and promoters of professional clubs in St. Louis could take a lesson from the M.A.A. officials in conducting the show…the contestants in each event put up such exciting milling that there was little to choose between the battles.” Harry Kiener, chairman of the Athletic Committee at the time, and his associates were given credit for the success of the event. Six different bouts took place that day with each providing more entertainment than the next. This boxing night event was not a one-off affair. At the time, they hosted one for several months in a row, with more attendees gathering each time.
