Since the Club opened its doors in 1903, the MAC has strived to uphold important traditions that make this organization unique. Whether Members believe it or not, one of these esteemed traditions is holding boxing matches at the Club, which one article depicts happening as early as 1921. A century ago, in January, the MAC (or Missouri Athletic Association as it was known at the time) hosted a “Regular Madison Garden Affair” in the ballroom of the Downtown Clubhouse. The success of the contests was documented in the Globe-Democrat at the time, who said “Matchmakers and promoters of professional clubs in St. Louis could take a lesson from the M.A.A. officials in conducting the show…the contestants in each event put up such exciting milling that there was little to choose between the battles.” Harry Kiener, chairman of the Athletic Committee at the time, and his associates were given credit for the success of the event. Six different bouts took place that day with each providing more entertainment than the next. This boxing night event was not a one-off affair. At the time, they hosted one for several months in a row, with more attendees gathering each time. To this day, one of the most anticipated events of the MAC’s calendar is boxing night, which will take place later this year. F
