NOVEMBER 2022 F 3

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT s I write this column, the air is brisk, the fall foliage is at its peak color and the forecast is calling for our first hard freeze. At the Club, our fall traditions and events are in full swing and will continue as the end-of-the-year holidays approach. I want to highlight two extraordinary events that I was privileged to attend and share a few introductory remarks at during the past month. The first is the Women of Distinction awards banquet, where the Club’s Women’s Initiative Group honored seven local women for their significant achievements in business, mentorship and community involvement. I would like to specifically thank my fellow Governor, Jodi Peterson, and the entire Steering Committee for hosting such a remarkable event. The event was a first-class experience and showcased the marvelous networking opportunities afforded by the Club and our “Clubs within the Club.” If you have not attended this event in the past, do yourself a favor and make sure to attend next year; you will not be disappointed. The second event actually occurred at the end of September. As many of you may not be aware, the Veterans Room on the fourth floor at the Downtown Clubhouse is the “clubhouse” and regular meeting space for Post #4 of the American Legion. The American Legion is our nation’s largest veterans service organization. On Sept. 28, Post #4 hosted Mr. Vincent J. “Jim” Troiola, the recently elected National Commander of the American Legion. It was inspiring to hear from Commander Troiola and learn more about what he and the American Legion are doing to ensure that our Veterans receive the support and services they need and richly deserve. In keeping with the theme of recognizing and honoring our veterans, the Club’s annual Veterans Day Commemoration will take place on Nov. 10. This is an incredible event and an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the men and women who served our country with tremendous dedication and valor. In addition to our Veterans Day Commemoration, there are several other outstanding upcoming Club events in the month of November. First, on Wednesday, Nov. 2, the MAC Speaker Series, co-sponsored by the Women’s Initiative Group and the Women Business Owners Roundtable, will host a breakfast meeting and presentation by Kathy Mazzarella, the Chairman, President and CEO of Graybar. Mazzarella will share her thoughts and perspectives on business innovation and longevity. For those of you who want to get a head start on your holiday shopping, I encourage you to attend the Sip and Shop event at the Downtown Clubhouse on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. For music lovers, the Apollos Fall Concert will take place on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Downtown Clubhouse. Finally, for your turkey day celebrations, a Thanksgiving lunch buffet will be

A

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

served at the West Clubhouse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a Thanksgiving dinner buffet will be available at the Downtown Clubhouse from 1-4 p.m. To reserve a space at the West Clubhouse, you will need to do so via phone at (314) 539-4490. Reservations for Downtown may be made via phone at (314) 539-4470 or online. In October, the Board of Governors visited the Union League of Philadelphia for our annual retreat. Frankly, it would take me two or three times the space afforded here to share all that we learned and gleaned from our experience. Like the MAC in St. Louis, the Union League of Philadelphia has a very prominent and historic building in the heart of Philadelphia. Their “League House” on Broad Street was built in 1864 and remains central to all that the Union League of Philadelphia offers its members. However, they have successfully acquired and integrated three (3) separate golf facilities and two (2) separate dining locations into their club as additional member amenities. The Union League of Philadelphia prides itself on long-term, strategic thinking. One message that certainly resonated and captivated the Board of Governors was the perspective that club leadership should always be thinking about “Building Your Granddaughter’s Club.” That is to say, we should always be thinking two generations down the line to ensure that the MAC is where future generations of the St. Louis community will want to be Members. I thank my fellow BOG Members who were able to attend the retreat, both in person and remotely, for their time and commitment to the MAC and our current and future generations of Members. Finally, I would like to recognize a recent recipient of the distinguished employee award. This individual works diligently behind the scenes at the Downtown Clubhouse to ensure our Members, guests and staff can have an exceptional experience. Diatra Sykes Title: Housekeeping Supervisor Start Date: 10/26/2018 Thank you for your service to the Club, Diatra! Your dedication to improving and enhancing our Club is one of many reasons that the MAC maintains its “Platinum Club” status. We are grateful to have you at the MAC! Members, I wish you and your family a great Thanksgiving, and I look forward to seeing you at the Club this fall.

Brent Beumer, President Missouri Athletic Club

Leaving a Legacy

HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR “RMDs” YET FOR 2022? Anyone 72 years of age or older is required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their tax-deferred accounts (IRA and 401k) by Dec. 31, 2022, and pay taxes on the distribution.

BUT THERE IS A WAY TO AVOID PAYING TAXES! You can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRAs to your favorite charities and avoid taxation.

The MAC Sports Foundation is a 501(c)(3) entity and is eligible to receive Qualified Charitable Distributions! Why not decide right now to save taxes this year and help the MAC Sports Foundation or the Charitable Society for Children at the same time?

A QCD is an excellent tax-saving vehicle, but there are rules to be followed and pitfalls to be avoided.

To find out more about Qualified Charitable Distributions and other giving opportunities, please contact: LARRY ABSHEER (“LA”) Director of Advancement 314-604-3890 or labsheer@mac-stl.org

We appreciate your generosity ... it matters!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER s many of you may be aware, the MAC Sports Foundation has recently teamed up with our downtown neighbor, the Youth and Family Center (YFC), for an exciting new initiative. The YFC is all about community, which is something that’s near and dear to the MAC family’s heart. It’s important to us to invest in the future of downtown St. Louis, which means investing in and supporting our local youth—providing them with opportunities for growth and development. With the MAC Sports Foundation’s pledge of $50,000, we are so thrilled to have launched the effort to raise an additional $100,000 to fund the installation of a new gymnasium floor at the YFC on Cass and 9th Street. In addition, we are incredibly excited to announce that The American Hellenic Foundation of St. Louis is contributing $50,000 towards this project as a direct result of the MAC’s relationship with The Regional Business Council’s Social Venture Partnership (SVP). The MAC Sports Foundation and the YFC are incredibly thankful for the support of all who have contributed. To build on this momentum, we are seeking individual donations and corporate sponsorships from Downtown business owners and anyone wanting to make a difference in the lives of the families served by the YFC to impact our neighborhood for the better. Please join us to build a brighter future for St. Louis area youth and help the YFC create a welcoming place that our community can be proud of. To learn more and pledge a donation, visit mac-sportsfoundation.org. An easy way to make a contribution is by registering to attend the 53rd Jack Buck Awards on Dec. 7. The cost of admission includes a voluntary $25 donation that will directly benefit the YFC initiative. For more than

a half-century, the Jack Buck Awards has celebrated the accomplishments of the best in St. Louis sports, featuring the Sports Personality of the Year along with an impressive group of award honorees. The banquet is a Member favorite that always sells out, so reserve your spot soon on the MAC website. The Club is always buzzing this time of year, so I want to encourage all MAC Members to come visit the 1903 Dining Room or the Jack Buck Grille. Both restaurants recently had grand reopenings to celebrate the completion of the renovations. At the JBG ribbon cutting, members of the Buck family attended to honor their loved one, Jack Buck. It was a special moment to see the Buck family enjoy the Grille and recognize that Jack Buck was at the forefront of all design decisions. I must say, both restaurants truly reflect the tradition and elegance of the MAC. I might be biased, but I believe the MAC now has two of the best restaurants in St. Louis — one for each Clubhouse. As we quickly transition from fall into colder weather, I’m reminded of how little time is left until the holidays! Both Clubhouses offer a wide variety of opportunities to celebrate this special time with family and fellow Members. Check out the Club’s upcoming events on page two and start planning your favorite holiday traditions at the MAC. See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MAC MEMBERSHIP UPDATE The Missouri Athletic Club continues to grow and expand throughout every aspect of the Club, including Membership. There have been many exciting changes recently, such as the recent reopening of the Jack Buck Grille and the 1903 Dining Room. Perhaps the most exciting thing has been the influx of new Members who are looking for fellowship with exceptional people and seeking extraordinary experiences, service and tradition. With this growing interest in Membership and the current waitlist to gain access to the West Clubhouse, it follows that the initiation fee to join the MAC should reflect a certain level of prestige. Effective Dec. 7, the initiation fee will be raised to $3,500 for Resident and Junior Resident Memberships and $1,750 for Associate Members. Affected new Members would be joining the Club in January of 2023. All Membership Nomination forms received by Dec. 6 will still receive the current rates of $2,500 for Resident and Junior Resident Members and $1,250 for Associate Members. Rest assured that this decision to raise the initiation fee is not taking place solely to take advantage of the current situation but rather to ensure the best possible Membership experience for all MAC Members. Comparative analysis of local St. Louis clubs and similar athletic clubs across the country shows that the MAC’s initiation fees still offer an incredible value for Members. As with every initiation fee increase, there tends to be a rush of incoming Members hoping to establish their Membership before the increase takes effect. Please let your friends, relatives and associates know to submit their applications as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute application rush.

Rodney Stoyer, Director of Membership Missouri Athletic Club

Initiation Fee Increase WEDNESDAY, D EC. 7

Do you have any friends or family members who are considering joining the MAC? Now is the time to join! Any applications received by Dec. 6 will receive the current initiation fee. Know any potential Members? VETERAN OF THE YEAR: LIEUTENANT COLONEL DON WOLFINGER Lieutenant Colonel Don Wolfinger served 21 years in active duty. He has continued to advocate for military personnel (active duty, retired and veterans) and their families, including surviving spouses. While on active duty, he had a variety of assignments in command and staff positions at all levels. As a member of the Military Officers Association of America, he has led the Advocacy in Action, engaging the Missouri Congressional Delegation, focusing key pay and benefits issues. At the same time, there was a need to address many issues at the State level. He and Colonel Tom Robillard established the State Legislative Exchange Forum. In the local community, he leads an older-adult ministry action team that provides opportunities for learning and fellowship. He is an active supporter of the inner-city Junior ROTC to emphasize leadership development. Wolfinger recently married Carolyn Brewington. They had both lost their spouses, but there was something missing in their lives. It was the love of God that brought them together. 10 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal w/Oakleaf, Air Medal and the Army Staff Badge.

VETERAN OF ACHIEVEMENT: TIM SMITH SR. Native-born St. Louisan, retired Sergeant Tim Smith Sr. graduated from Affton high school and went on to play junior college basketball at Forest Park Community College. He missed being a part of a team, so he enlisted in the Army and served from 2003-2007. Smith was part of the 1st Armored Division 4-27FA. While deployed to Iraq in 2004, he did a lot of security for convoys and guard duty. In 2009, Smith became a Pat Tillman Military Scholar, which paid his way through the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. In 2011, he founded Patriot Commercial Cleaning, which over the years, has hired over 51 veterans and 22 family members of veterans. Later in 2019, he founded Patriot Industries, a company specializing in low slope roofing and architectural shingles. Due to burn pit exposure while serving in

Iraq, he has beaten lung cancer three times and feels very fortunate. He believes he still has much to offer after serving in the Military, and it is an honor for him to keep serving the veteran community.

LIFETIME DEDICATION: RAY BUENEMAN A native St. Louisan, Ray Bueneman has always been happiest as a team member working toward the success of any group. While a student at St. Louis Beaumont High School, Bueneman was selected to play for the American Legion, Fred W. Stockham Post #245 baseball team, where he helped Stockham Post win the 1956 American Legion Junior Baseball League National Championship. Even today, he continues to maintain strong relationships with the 1956 team members. Bueneman enlisted in the Air National Guard while still in high school and served in France during the Vietnam War coalescing the work of his team. Members of American Legion, Stockham – St. Louis Post #4 have also benefitted from his service as commander, followed by years as adjutant. Bueneman’s team spirit is highly valued by all, making everyone a winner.

On the Road Again with the FYC By Judith Hanses, Past Governor

A late October road trip found the Forever Young Club (FYC) near Perryville, Missouri, exploring the well-preserved 1838-1839 emigration site of Lutherans who fled religious persecution in Saxony, Germany. The visit was followed by a trip to the nearby Missouri National Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the location of an exact, full-size replica of the Vietnam Wall on the National Mall in Washington, DC. What a surprise to discover a perfectly preserved German emigration settlement from the late 1830s in Frohna and Altenburg, Missouri, among the hills alongside the Mississippi River. Selected for its rolling terrain, reminiscent of Saxony, the preserved settlement features hand-hewn log cabins, barns, the blacksmith shop that kept shoes on the horses and wheels on the settlers’ wagons, the original log church and a oneroom log structure where Concordia Lutheran Seminary was founded as the first seminary west of the Mississippi River, now located in Clayton. The FYC learned that some of the Saxony emigres chose to settle in St. Louis and established the historic Trinity Lutheran Church in Soulard. A most inspiring aspect of our visit was that this thriving community had entertained 35,000 guests at the county fair the Sunday before our visit. The charming local museum and visitor center is staffed by residents who grew up in the area and retired back home after careers that took them all over the country. Likewise, the restaurant where we enjoyed lunch was operated by a gracious lady who had lived in various locations around the United States and returned to settle down and entertain in her home community. The luncheon included highly acclaimed bratwurst and delicious German potato salad with sweet red cabbage that was praised by all. After our authentic German lunch, the

next stop was Missouri’s National Veterans Memorial on the outskirts of Perryville. Here, on the former site of a Vietnam veteran’s farm, sits an exact replica of the Vietnam Wall, down to its black granite sourced from the original quarry, and with every letter of the 58,390 names scripted in the same, precise font as engraved on the Wall in the District of Columbia (DC). Why is there a perfect replica in Perryville? Because Vietnam veteran Jim Eddleman promised himself that if he got out of Vietnam alive, he would find a way to honor the Vietnam veterans who died there. He donated 46 acres and 2.6 million dollars in savings to create a wall to honor the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Tour chairman, Joe Hoffmann, related a personal story revived by seeing the replica wall. His college classmate and fraternity brother, Navy Lieutenant Harold Dale Meyerkord, was a Mizzou graduate and Navy Fast Boat captain who was the first commissioned naval officer to die in Vietnam in March of 1965 after enlisting in 1959. Hoffmann first knew about his friend’s death when he saw Meyerkord’s name on the Wall in Washington, DC. Forever Young travelers agreed it was a lovely and inspiring day discovering history, ranging from the early days of European settlement in Missouri to a Vietnam veteran’s determination to remember and commemorate fallen comrades—all practically in our own backyard.

ARENADO SNAGS SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR Cardinals third baseman to be honored at 53rd Jack Buck Sports Awards on Dec. 7 Third baseman Nolan Arenado thrilled Cardinal fans this past season with his spectacular Gold Glove defense and hitting heroics. Members of the Missouri Athletic Club have voted him the 2022 Sports Personality of the Year, an award that MAC Member Jack Buck established in 1970 to annually honor the top St. Louis sports figure. Arenado will be presented with the award at the 53rd annual Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet, presented by Redbird Carriers, on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The Cardinals traded for Arenado in 2021. SOCCER FANS!

The Missouri Athletic Club has a rich tradition of soccer, symbolized in the Hermann Trophy, awarded to the most outstanding men’s and women’s collegiate soccer players. In the spirit of the Hermann Trophy and St. Louis’ rich soccer culture, the Club is exploring the creation of a Member group focused on the world’s most popular sport. Potential activities for the group include watch parties as the World Cup kicks off this November, involvement with the Hermann Trophy Award and competing in offsite league play. If you are would like to learn more about participating in the new group, please contact Garrett Leahy at gmleahy57@gmail.com to express your interest.

MAC EMPLOYEE

Holiday Fund The holiday season is fast approaching, prompting us to reflect on the outstanding year of events and accomplishments we have enjoyed. None of these events would have been possible without exceptional staff members’ diligent work throughout the year. We see them every day, or we don’t see them—we see the effects of their work in the locker rooms, the kitchen, the basement laundry room and engineering offices. The Club’s hardworking staff is what keeps both Clubhouses running smoothly. Annually, the Employee Holiday Fund extends a holiday bonus to the Missouri Athletic Club staff and supports the MAC charitable entities. The MAC’s employees are always incredibly thankful to the Club’s Membership for this outpouring of appreciation. This year, a portion of the funds will be allocated to the Charitable Society for Children (CSC) and used to carry on the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. On your Oct. 31, 2022, statement (both paper and digital), please notice a voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100 shown as “Empl Holiday/Foundations Cont.” Unless you notify the accounting office otherwise, the funds will be allocated as shown: F $95 Employee Holiday Fund F $5 MAC Charitable Society for Children (tax-deductible) Remember, these contributions are entirely voluntary and can be left as-is, requiring nothing further from you. Alternatively, you may adjust or eliminate your contribution by contacting the Accounting Department or using the form available on the MAC website.
