CEO Pledge

T

he fur industry is regularly accused of skinning animals alive and IFF

CEO Mark Oaten has decided enough is enough; it's time to set the record straight. He has developed a pledge that skinning alive is not

regular practice within the fur trade, and urges anyone with any evidence of this barbaric practice taking place to contact the IFF directly, so that we can urge the local authorities to prosecute. The pledge has been emailed to a wide list of fashion journalists, sent directly to the Daily Mail journalist who ignited the debate and is featured on Mark's Huffington Post blog. They have also tweeted a series of statements from the official IFF Twitter account @we_are_fur.

or the seventh year in a row, animal rights crime figures are lower than the previous year. Statistics show that not only are crimes

continuing to fall but that 2014 returned the fewest number of crimes for over 12 years. Crimes targeting all animal-using industries,

whilst falling, remain consistent unlike the drastic reductions seen by the fur industry. The member country with the most impressive

fall in crime was Sweden – victim to 599 crimes over 12 years. In 2014, there were zero recorded crimes. Other notable reductions have been recorded in Italy, France, Germany, USA and Canada. Crime is generally very low in Asia and Eurasia.

FUR EUROPE

interview...

INNOVATING HERITAGE RESPONSIBLY

In occasion of the last Mifur in Milan we met with Ioannis Manakas, owner of the fur company of the same name, as well as the vice-chairman of Fur Europe, and Martina Bianchini, CEO of the association, which was created in 2014. Mr Manakas, what is Fur Europe? The association is the result of the fusion between the European Fur Breeders’ Association (EFBA) and the members of the European branch of the International Fur Federation (IFF), bringing together the whole fur supply chain in an “umbrella” consortium, from breeders to auctions, from producers of the finished product, right to the stores. The need to address the sector’s issues together is at the foundation of the association and we work in 28 different European countries with information campaigns, promotion and direct support for the sector. Mrs Bianchini, can you give me an in-depth description of the association’s aims? One of the main objectives is to directly address every new piece of regulation or legislation introduced in Europe and to coordinate a response from a political/strategic point of view. This is one of the reasons why our headquarters are in Brussels, the heart of the European Union. Another important aim is to provide information about the fur sector. People don’t know a lot about it and what they do know is only one side of the coin, so to speak. Our aim is to present the facts and objective information and to ensure that people understand the value of the fur supply chain, both in terms of a historical tradition, as well as – more pragmatically – the jobs that it creates in each country. It is essential for us to ensure that people can be made aware of all the facts to make a substantiated opinion, without being influenced by the propaganda of animal rights and anti-fur groups. That is why we want to promote the sector, providing as many notions as possible and letting people decide their thoughts on the issue for themselves, without being influenced by biased opinions or even false ones. We have established an Information Center to do this, where anyone can ask questions or get detailed information in the most transparent and clear way possible. Almost 50% of global production is taking place in Europe, mostly in the Scandinavian countries such as Denmark and Finland but also in Holland and some Eastern European Countries such as Poland. In 2014, the

the tradition of fur moving towards the future

European fur production was more than 43 million furs from four species, milk, fox, chinchilla and finnraccoon. Fur Europe’s slogan is “Innovating heritage responsibly”. Ours is an important artisan tradition that we must not lose. European standards are extremely high and we have very strict controls: we want to maintain production in Europe for this reason also. Can you give me an idea of the work that you will carry out in 2015? One of our objectives is to give support and perform direct actions for the members of Fur Europe, assisting them in developing national strategies, supplying clear guidelines and working on the challenges and different projects, such as events and marketing, research into financing opportunities and the promotion of fur fashion via media campaigns and themed events, while also exploring new sectors, such as interior design. What do you think about the significant presence of fur garments in the latest collections from the biggest fashion brands? Yes, fur is very fashionable. It is a unique, beautiful product. Fur garments are fabulous to touch and to wear and we are noticing that a youthful, laid-back trend is very popular with the end consumer. On our part, we are trying to meet market demands, working on the traceability and certification of origin. www.fureurope.eu
