GREETINGS VIEW
Greetings friends,
10th and 11th with your friends and stretch those summer and fall evenings and then park and enjoy our downtown. A great place to hang out during the cruise is Music in the Plaza, continuing Fridays through September. There are some great bands that will be playing in 10th St Plaza. Come down and enjoy my band Third Party on August 11. It will be fun and we will be playing hits you love and get a good spot on a downtown patio and enjoy dinner.
At the end of the day, ModestoView is here because we want to highlight the things that make living here good. We like doing stuff with our families and friends. There are so many local events and local business that bring us together and need help. Whether you saw Barbie at the Brenden, or Oppenheimer at the State, these are all our local places. The local restaurant where you had dinner is so very important and the local retailers that keep our dollars here in town are the ones we all depend on, so let’s keep the focus.

I remember getting out of school and being so ready for summer. Summer was fun and back in the day I had a blast, we traveled a lot, played hard, sometimes went to summer school; but when it got time to go back to regular school, I was pretty ready. Friends, activities, band, cross country, afterschool hang outs and so much more, all after Labor Day. Now, back to school is August 7 for most Modesto students. So much to be ready for, backpacks, school clothes and supplies and some early rising. Even the high school and college kids are going back soon so the world gets back to a whole different schedule.
So what did you do this summer?
We have jammed so much into the last few months. There is no possible way you could have been bored. MoBand, Comedy with American Laughiti, fun summer movie premiers, Bastille Day, Farmer’s Market, Music in the Plaza, Brown Bag lunch concerts, Graffiti Summer, Stanislaus County Fair, 4th of July, and of course, legal cruising. So here we are watching the clock tick down to school season.
Have no fear though, there are still some
weeks to jam a few more things in, so that’s why we highlight some of the non-traditional outdoor activities like disc golf, Pickleball and river rafting before we get into cross country and football.
As we go back to school, let’s make sure to get kids in the music programs. This may not seem like it’s that important, but the arts in our schools really allow kids to shine and learn in so many new ways.
We know that the more creative people we have in our community, the better we will be, as we become more open minded and diverse, yet more connected. Music is accessible to all people and truly can build common bonds, which we really need right now. We need to create things, build things and repair things in our community and society. It is so easy to tear things down and forget how we got here. Society and democracy are fragile and need work, support and a team effort to keep it together.
Speaking of togetherness and diversity, my hat is off to our low rider community for bringing everyone together to help repeal the anti-cruising ordinance that has been in place since 1990. Thanks to all of this teamwork with the Modesto Police, Modesto City Council and the Cruising Culture, you can now cruise legally in Modesto all year long. Hit McHenry or

SUMMER VIEW
By Chris MurphyCool down and Save Top 5 Summer Energy Saving TIps
Wow, we have had some record high temps this summer. Here are some of MID Summer Energy Saving Tips to keep you cool and save you some money.
Did you know that air conditioning can account for as much as half of your electric bill? Although most households will always use more electricity in summer than in winter, there is a lot you can do to keep your summer electric use under control. Here are some great ways for you to stay cool and save some dough!
1. The numbers to live by are 78–85. Keep your thermostat at 78 or higher when you’re home. Set it at 85 when you’ll be away for a few hours.
2. Portable and ceiling fans can circulate air and help you feel cooler for a fraction of the cost of air conditioning, but always make sure to turn them off when you leave the room. (Plus, if you install a whole-house fan, you could get a $100 MPower rebate as a bonus.)
3. Avoid heat build-up indoors by keeping your blinds and curtains drawn during the heat of the day and limiting your daytime appliance use. You’d be surprised how much heat ovens, dishwashers and clothes dryers can add to your home.
4. Open windows at night to catch a cooling breeze.
5. If you have a highly energy efficient home, on super-hot days, pre-cool your home by running the air conditioner a short time in the early morning.
By Chris MurphyART VIEW Hot August Art
By Jim ChristiansenThe Art Scene is hoping that Hot August Nights will be cooler than July’s triple-digit temperatures. The weather forecast says this may be the case, but there were a few things that made July so hot in the arts. Musicians and friends performed a concert to say goodbye to community friend Mike Shelton and his closing of Ralston’s Goat. I had a migraine that day but watched the many videos of it all during vampire hours and extend a thank you to Mike for Ralston’s Goat’s support of the arts and artists from the start. I have had my art on display and co-produced the Comedy Series “Just Kidding” with Jen Eros early on. Cocktail Goat watercolors started participating in Art Walk, poetry readings, weddings, Pub Crawls, and more, like departed artist Phil Murillo’s signage and early community murals. The Goat will be missed.
July marks the 70th anniversary of the Central California Art Association. Modesto knows it as the Mistlin Gallery, but it is in transformation, now doing
business as the Stanislaus Arts Council. This expands the outreach into the many creative art entities beyond and with the visual arts. This was formally announced at the Emerging Artists/Members Choice artist reception and mixer. Fitting of the historic occasion, scrapbooks and histories of the Central California Art League’s original formation were on display in the classroom studio. Books included the changeover to CCAA, the move from the McHenry Museum Basement to the current 1015 J Street location, renamed for sponsor Tony Mistlin, up to 2023. Fittingly, the People’s Choice award for the Members, not Emerging Artist show, CCAA’s youngest member Charles Sperling. Patron participation counts.
The future for the next decade of the CCAA is reflected in the new “Synergy” multidimensional, multi-artistic disciplines, multiartist collaborative works on display now. Updating to the age of interconnection, the Synergy project brought together the visual arts, writers, poets, videographers, musi-
cians, choreographers, and dancers to bring an expansive experiential presentation on various themes. QR codes abound in this exhibit, taking you to videos and other storylines outside the gallery location. Mistlin has already hit the YouTube and Facebook live presentations of the regular interview live show of “Expose Yourself to Art” on Sundays, which recently featured Barbara Alvarado and what happens and the inspiration behind the Dragonfly Art for Life studio/gallery on J Street. This is membership renewal and joining time for the CCAA, and the next big event is the Autumn Arts Festival, a members-only juried show. We are happy to report that several recent participants in the Emerging Artist Salon de Refuses show and Synergy have joined up, eligible to be part of this major juried showcase.
The Art Walk will be on the third Thursday as usual for August. Venues like Picasso’s are open during the week. During the recent meeting at Mistlin Gallery, the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock opened its Annual Showcase exhibit, and there are plenty of other opportunities in our area to attend and celebrate the arts in the Modesto View area, including Chartreuse Muse and other venues on the Art Walk map.
Attend the shows at the galleries to see who got in and what awards were presented. Current newsworthy awards are the Heartland Grantees. Lightbox Theatre Company, Boys and Girls Club of Stanislaus County, South Modesto Businesses United, Inc., Central West Ballet, Carnegie Arts Center, Prospect Theater Project, in the nonprofit organizations. Jacquie Villegas, Marisa Segovia, Jason True, Nicole Jones, Cristina Accalos, Jose Mariquez, Cyprin Mason, Orlin Reyes, and filmmaker Mark Runnels as individual artists received Heartland Grants.

Tap Travelers: Their Taps Travel to You
By Brandilyn MitchellThere’s nothing better than locallycrafted brews like beer, wine and cider — that is, unless they roll up to your event in a custom restored 1964 GMC Panel truck.
Tap Travelers, owned by Julie Amaral and Monica Farhat, serves local beers, ciders and wines like Tapped Apple Cider, Last Call, and Dust Bowl.
After visiting Portugal in 2016 and seeing a similar truck parked near the top of a beautiful mountain offering “Wine with a View”, they decided they wanted to bring that experience home and offer it to others. Their 3-wheeled Tap Truck “Annie” debuted in 2018, but was replaced in 2019 with the larger, teal and white truckster you see today. It is very “American Grafittiesque”, which makes visiting them this month a great way to celebrate “Hot August Nights”.
Julie used to be a paralegal and was into wine in college-so much so she but now she lives life to the fullest recommending beers for various events like corporate parties, bridal showers, golf tournaments and yes, even your local farmers markets.
“There are quite a few craft breweries in the Central Valley, and we like to pour local whenever we can. We love to go around to like Persuasion, Contentment, and Blaker and pick what we like,” she said. “We like to have options on tap that the customer can still get at the brewery. So if they like it, we know they can go get more. But I’m Portuguese, so I always have a Super Bock on tap!” But sometimes, local drinkers want a name they know: like Coors or Lagunitasthey will pour what you want! They offer Micheladas for $10, most other beverages are $7. For baby showers or for your dry loved ones, they make excellent mocktails and root beer!
Growing up, Julie loved to try anythingeven snails in the shell you had to dig out with a toothpick-so she has never been shy
to try beers from all over, made with any kind of local ingredient. Kona’s Passion Fruit Wheat Beer (Hawaii) is the beer that got Julie passionate about beer, which makes that an aptly named beer for several reasons. In college she had a friend who worked at the tasting room for Firestone, and her palate expanded with every beer she tried.
They bring the party, and the party doesn’t truly start until they roll up! Julie might have retired from the corporate world, but she plans to drive this truck and serve beer as long as she can. Book them for your special occasion-You tell them what you want and they do all the work, down to the ice and napkins. This truck has the perfect ambiance for any occasion, and looks especially romantic when the twinkle lights roll out.
Find them at the Ripon Farmers Market, every other Thursday night from 5-8pm May-September at 929 W. Main Street behind Studio Joy
(Remaining dates this season: 8/10, 8/24, 9/7, 9/21)

Stop, MAMA Time

August 25,1949 - July 5, 2023
By Peter GrimaldiIt’s an exciting time of year again, as we eagerly await the call for MAMA nominees from within the 209 area code. The ModestoView calendar serves as our guide, allowing us to note many events and performances throughout the year. This gives us a unique perspective when summer comes to an end and we start narrowing down the candidates for the top 10 vying for the coveted stainless steel carhop trophy. However, we don’t stop there. We want to hear from venue owners, promoters, and performers alike about who they think deserves to be part of the Modesto Area Music Awards.
Once we receive the nominations, we group them into categories narrowing them down to 10 nominees in each. As with the music scene itself, the Modesto Area Music Awards are fluid and ever-changing. The very first MAMA awards had only seven categories, which grew to over twenty over the years. However, last year we had only thirteen categories. We’re excited to see what the future holds, and whether categories such as Punk, Reggae, Rockabilly, and Metal will return to full strength or if new ones will be added, combined, or removed. It all depends on the number of nominees we receive for each category. Therefore, we urge you to send in your choices for as many categories as you feel comfortable submitting. You can find the
full list from Alternative to Youth on our website www.modestoareamusic.com. The more nominations we receive, the richer the music scene we can represent. Moreover, we’d like to emphasize that the voting process is fair and transparent. You are the Academy and you choose the winners. This means that your voice matters, and we encourage you to participate in the voting process. Voting goes live in early September, until 11:59 pm on October 15th.
Finally, we’d like to invite all MAMA nominees and their guests to celebrate with us at the historic State Theatre on October 17th at 6 pm. We believe this is going to be an unforgettable night, and we’d like to share it with you. For those who are unable to attend, the event will be streamed live on the ModestoView website, so you can still be part of the excitement. Good luck, and we hope to see you at the MAMAs. www.modestoareamusic.com
Thank you for the music… I wish I had thanked him more often. I am stunned and saddened by Richard’s passing.
It is not that Richard Mulholland’s generosity and love for music was never mixed with his disciplined business sense, it was. But Richard recognized the promise of live music, its cultural benefits, and was always willing to consider his support for local arts projects, a risk most would not take. All those who have enjoyed live music in Modesto through the years, have taken from his generosity giving to the arts. An ardent supporter of Modesto’s State Theatre, Gallo Center, Prospect Theatre and Red Tie Arts, he would also dedicate his time and funding for local independent promotions, with a special love for jazz and world music. I was so fortunate that he took an interest in the popularity of Cajun Zydeco that in 1996 I proposed that the “New Orleans Creole vibe” would make a perfect soundtrack for a perfect daylong outdoor festival, with terrific food, beer, wine, and a perfect family friendly atmosphere. He agreed… and he knew the perfect location.
Richard, with the help of his late brother Moe Mulholland, APEX Painting Inc., and Zydeco Dance Party, put a talented team of volunteers together as partners with the
Tuolumne River Lodge to create the classic “Boogie on the Bayou, Music & Dance Festival.” Sounds of Cajun Zydeco, Blues, and Americana all blended with the scenic Tuolumne River to create an annual ritual for hundreds of packed dancers, every first Sunday in June. Festival headliners included Buckwheat Zydeco, CJ Chenier, Zydeco Flames, Danny Poullard and Roy Rogers. It was here that festival favorite, Tom Rigney and Flambeau first grew a legion of fans that follow him to this day.
Richard’s dedication and vision to produce “the Boogie” provided the guidance, infrastructure, and work force it took to make it happen. Deliveries of hospitality, radios, carts, tarps, hay bales, dance floors, state of the art sound system were all first class. It all worked under Richards organizational direction that brought out his dead pan humor, as he would say “…like herding cats.” From the chaos the result was magic, but as with all good things, the challenges were too many to keep this cooperative together past its ten-year run through 2006. I am overwhelmed by how fondly that event is remembered, how much it has been missed, but most of all, Richards personal pride in that event in all his achievements. Our musical community will miss Richard’s spirit. His philanthropy, musicianship and support for the Arts will be hard to replace where most find it hard to justify. Richard was a big-hearted soul, who loved to laugh, play, and listen to music, drink fine wine, eat great food, and willing to take a risk for it. Thanks Rich

Modesto has an amazing selection of local donut shops in town and we love them all! There’s nothing better than some donut hole appetizers, a fresh baked donut of your favorite flavor, and a chocolate milk or Martinelli’s cider from the fridge to start off (or end!) the day. Each person has their favorite donut shop that they support and more often than not, it’s because of the neighborhood you grew up in and where you had donuts as a kid. We know there are some friendly rivalries in town and we had four teenagers visiting from France this summer courtesy of Modesto Sister Cities International – so we decided to do a blind taste test! We set up a blind taste test that included Maple Old Fashioned, White Sprinkle Cake Donuts, and Chocolate Glazed for the French visitors to try and we had a unanimous winner. Drumroll please….. WE DONUTS! WE DONUTS is open 24 hours a day at 2207 Scenic Drive and took the prize with the best donuts according to our French judges. The all-around favorite was the classic Chocolate Glazed Donut, but all were delicious. (This was a personal “win” for me because I grew up going to WE and they’ve been my favorite donut shop for over 25 years. I promise the judging was fair and no bribes on the part of the facilitator!) We love all our donut shops in town and know each place has unique flavors and bakes to try – so use this as a sign to go to your favorite local donut shop and pick up some donuts to indulge in all while supporting the places that keep us running 24/7
State Fair Flair...
We would like to extend our congratulations to some of our local businesses for their exceptional achievements at the California State Fair. Notably, Dying Breed Brewing in Oakdale received Gold for their Wanted Red or Alive and Imperial Red Ale, and also took home 2 Silver and a Bronze ribbon, an impressive feat! Additionally, Morgan Territory, Tracy, won Silver for their Super Bloom Kölsch along with a couple of Bronze, and Dustbowl Turlock, received a well-deserved bronze for their Therapist Imperial IPA. We must also highlight Sciabica Olive Oil Modesto, who won Best of Show for Flavored Olive Oil for their Co-Milled Basil, showcasing their outstanding quality. We want to congratulate all who participated in the competition and apologize if we missed anyone from the 209 area, but great job to all!

OLD FRANKLIN SCHOOL

Abner became involved with OM through their Summer Opera Institute intensive training program, and then at my annual multilingual concert spectacular co-hosted with them, sharing a song from his childhood based on one of the Psalms. He was a guest performer at my most recent Young Artist showcase a few months ago. Now the time has come for Abner to step up front and center.
As local students of all ages prepare to return to school this Fall, they will be benefitting from the immense development and renovations of school facilities undertaken by Modesto City Schools. For some, their school’s construction may still be ongoing, posing some logistical hurdles to the start of an otherwise normal school year. It was not very different in Fall 1923 when Modesto schools started the new term while Modesto’s Board of Education oversaw the construction of two new elementary schools: John Muir School and Franklin School, which was named for the adjacent street now designated MLK Drive. While John Muir School tragically burned in 2007, the original brick Franklin School building is still standing today and turns 100 years old later this year. Located at 426 Locust Street, the old schoolhouse continues to serve Modesto’s students, but now as the Modesto City Schools Administration Building.
The elementary-level classes of Franklin School in its first year were scattered across the schools of West Side Modesto: Washington School, Pioneer School on 6th Street, and the site of Franklin School. The new main school building and grounds of the Franklin School “on the Maze road” were not yet complete enough for use, so teachers utilized two bungalows which were moved for use and children were escorted off site to Maze Park for recesses. As the Board eloquently stated on September 16th, 1923 in the Modesto Morning Herald, “While we are opening school under great disadvantages, the important thing to remember is that we did commence in spite of these disadvantages, and with everybody, parents, pupils, and teachers, pulling together, we will make our school
year a successful one.”
Although classes were spread around, the enrollment for the start of Franklin School was 265 students at the beginning of the term and increased as the school year commenced to over 300 students in December.
W.E Faught was the City Superintendent, W.P. Dean was the Grammar School Supervisor, and Elsie VanWyck Turner served as the first Principal of Franklin School.
The old Franklin School went on to serve students of the Modesto area until 1951. At that time, with new state earthquake safety laws in place, the brick school building was deemed no longer seismically satisfactory for school use. In response, both brick schoolhouses of John Muir School and Franklin School were replaced by new campuses in new locations, which were designed by Fresno-based architects Swartz and Hyberg. Students and faculty moved into the new schools on January 2nd, 1952 with the return from winter vacation. This transition, leaving the old Franklin School empty, allowed for the Board of Education to consolidate school district administrative offices which had been spread across various school properties into one location. By early January 1952, Modesto City Schools had moved its offices into the old Franklin School building. Now over 70 years later Modesto City Schools is still located in the 1923 Franklin School, and the Franklin School’s 1951 campus on South Emerald Avenue and Maze Boulevard continues to serve West Modesto students.
A rare extra layer of icing on the cake of Modesto Unplugged programming happens when a featured musician shares a name with an instrument or musical term. There was Viola: violinist & vocalist with the traditional Italian folk group PizziCali, one of the zestiest headliners I’ve hosted. There was Banjo (named not for the instrument, but after a famous Australian) who played percussion with the Aussie family band The Hollands. More recently, Melodia, a young fado singer I met through Opera Modesto, put together her own starring concert for my series last year. One more member of the club, who I also know from Opera events, is the most aptly named of them all: a talented young tenor named Abner Arias. Abner got his start singing in church from a young age. Artists such as Mariah Carey, Kirk Franklin, and Israel Houghton were early musical influences; later, Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti would serve as his gateway to opera music. Abner’s first vocal coach was Seija Anderson, the mother of one of our local opera stars and Opera Modesto
On Saturday evening August 19, Abner will lead his first recital concert at my invitation, with a program titled ‘El Sonido De Mis Raizes’ (“The Sound Of My Roots.”) The focus is on romantic songs with beautiful lyrics, many performed in Spanish and drawing slightly from mariachi music but without the repetitive tempos of that genre. The program also includes a song in Tagalog, a Filipino language with similarities to Spanish which Abner appreciates. Abner will be joined by fellow young vocalists Michael Balerite, Philomena Iorns & Lola Fletcher; Roy Mendiola on piano; and David Perry Molina on guitar. Enjoy this intimate listening concert with Abner and friends starting at 6:30 pm at the Mistlin Gallery on J St. Admission is $15 cash at the door, and as always, seats can be reserved at modestounplugged@yahoo.com. The presentations I cohost with Opera Modesto have been some of the most enriching of the past few years, and this one will be no different. By Chris Murphy and the ViewCrewIn the morning, I’m making waffles!
- Donkey, Shrek 2001
There is something special about a waffle. For some, it is the pure simplicity of an old school small hole waffle, with butter and some maple syrup. Some add strawberries and whipped cream, some slather on some peanut butter and sprinkle with chocolate, some prefer a big thick Belgian waffle and some even top their waffles with bacon or fried chicken, and then some syrup. Waffles mean so many different things and even a good ole Eggo in the toaster with a tab of real butter will do the trick sometimes.
Heck, even Bill Bowerman, used a waffle iron to revolutionize the running shoe. I don’t think his waffle iron ever saw waffle batter again, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
This month, the ViewCrew really dove into what makes their waffles special and we fanned out across the county to see where our our fave waffles come from. I am sure that we missed some of yours, so please, send us your choices and we will add them to our list and post them on our socials.

While there, enjoy the Get Toasted “mimosa flights” and sip through various inventive flavors! Get Toasted is open Thursday-Sunday from 10 AM-4 PM at 3308 Santa Fe St in Riverbank.
Food Fix
By Chris MurphyAhh Sunday brunch. This is one of life’s best weekend rituals. Our food friends at Food Fix on 11th St, have been delivering amazing tastes, from fruity pebbles cookies and the worldfamous porkstrami to tasty house-made breads. Their weekend menu has a variety of waffle flavors with tasty topping options and organic maple syrup. My choice for toppings was a blueberry compote with fresh strawberries and blueberries topped with whipped cream.
FYI, I like the small hole traditional thin waffles. More holes to capture the butter and the toppings in every bite. The waffle was soft and fluffy and the toppings filled every nook and cranny. On the side, you can get fruit or some crispy Yukon potatoes. Every brunch needs a tasty beverage. For you mimosa lovers, Food Fix has some great sour beers that are a perfect match to a fruit covered waffle. I enjoyed the Sweet Cart Sour from Last Call Brewing with the flavors of Mango, Watermelon, Pineapple and more. Best of all, you can try so many flavors and don’t forget to take home a pint of coleslaw.

This has been a go-to place for our family for nearly 30 years as it used to be Ridgways, back in the day. Secret Garden is bright, clean and friendly. Their breakfast selection is amazing. In addition to their great omelets and French toast concoctions, their waffles are on point. On this particular day, I ordered strawberries and whipped cream waffles with a strawberry shake while my grandson had Confetti pancakes. Get yourself a side of sausage and you are good to go. You can also get a nice mimosa flight too. Special Hack – You can get a “special” shake with a shot of vodka in it upon request since they have a full bar. Try it sometime. By Chris MurphyGabriela Guerrini Executive Director, The State Theatre
Our family has known Gabriela Guerrini for nearly 25 years. She has been the friendly face of food service, local restaurants, local running clubs, marathons and so much more. Her kids were young when my kids were young and there have been many fun memories. We have both watched our community change in so many ways. A few years ago, she became the manager of the historic State Theatre and we worked on the MAMA Awards and so many different projects. As the State has evolved and grown, the Board of Directors made an excellent choice to appoint Gabi as the Executive Director. This is a wonderful move, putting a person with amazing customer and organizational skills at the helm of one of Modesto’s treasures. With the recently expanded Intermission and the Jewel, the State is serving more of our community. Running a non-profit theatre takes skill, a great attitude, and a “can do” spirit and she is just the person to take this on. Let’s learn more about Gabriela! ModestoView: What first attracted you to food service and customer service?
Gabrielle Guerrini: I grew up working retail, my mom owned three clothing stores in the Bay Area called “Short Story.” My first jobs were at McDonald’s then Swensen’s Ice Cream Parlor. I’ve always had a heart for service. I love people!
MV: You have been working downtown for many years. How do you feel that it has evolved?
GG: I started in 1999, opening up Dewz Restaurant and haven’t left. In my mind, it has always been the heart of Modesto, but I think we have evolved and worked hard at getting the word out that downtown is a vibrant community for so many things to do. Downtown has so many people and organizations working on making it amazing! It is now more family friendly than ever.
MV: Your skills have helped make many projects like the Peace Officer Memorial Run and the Modesto Marathon successful, how do you think this will help you excel at guiding the State?
GG: Being the director of volunteers for the Peace Officer Memorial Run & Modesto Marathon has given me the skills of leadership, organization, finding community connections to help find volunteers, and an overall sense of how important it is to give where you can. I am here to help make Modesto & the State Theatre the best it can be. With all my experience,
it has all cumulated to get me to the position I have now, and I love it so much!
MV: This is a wonderful historic theatre, what inspires you most about this place? GG: Every morning I wake up so honored to be a part of this historic theatre. What inspires me the most is the history it has and how many lives we have touched over the years. Hearing stories of first dates and seeing the kids’ awe-struck faces when they walk into our theater for the first time are two of my favorites!
MV: How do you think your involvement in Modesto has inspired your children? GG: They both have a service heart and both were in the restaurant business – with me being a server and their dad owning Fuzio, it was inevitable! My daughter Madeline was super involved in hosting local music shows and loved hanging out downtown! It is her place. My son Matthew is now a police officer in San Jose. He has always had a passion for helping others.
MV: It seems like the State Theatre is on a roll and you have a very supportive Board
of Directors; how does that motivate you?
GG: Our board is such an amazing champion for the State. Their commitment to our community gives us the support we need to be the people’s theater! From hosting local filmmaker premieres, our Youth Education Program, Sensory Friendly days, and helping other non-profits host their fundraisers here, they support me 100%. Because of this, I strive to make the State the best it can be with a wide variety of programming and the commitment to support our community.
MV: Is there a certain event in Modesto that has really motivated you?
GG: My first motivating event in Modesto was the Modesto Marathon. Witnessing so many local families come together to walk or run in their hometown is heartwarming and inspiring. Music in the Plaza, Porchfest, First Fridays, and so many more inspire me and how Modesto has such a big sense of community.
MV: Theatres and performing arts spaces were hit hard during COVID. What were some of the ways you found to help make it through?
GG: We hosted drive up popcorn sales every Friday, went after the many grants being given to arthouse theaters by the government, drive-in movies, and even one drive-in concert! The community really went out of their way to help us out with donations during that time as well. We cannot thank the community enough for their support (and our past ED, Kirstie, who donned the popcorn costume, selling bags of popcorn every Friday!).
MV: The arts community is pretty tight, how do you think these groups all get along and what opportunities do you see for collaboration?
GG: Our downtown arts community is tight! I love that. We try different types of collaborations with the other theaters. Some work, some don’t, but we are always willing and open to work together. That is what makes our community so special.
MV: Tell us something that people may not know about you?
GG: I have a Master’s in English and taught ESL at MJC.
MV: How can people help the State Theatre?
GG: The easiest way is to show up to an event or movie! We also have memberships that start at $50, memberships are at the heart of our fundraising.
MV: What are you looking forward to most in the next year?
GG: Expanding our programming, finding more community sponsors for our concerts and events, and opening Intermission and all the events we’ll be hosting there.
MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day. GG: Saturday mornings at the Farmers Market followed by breakfast downtown. Shopping at Mira’s and just running into and chatting with all my people. I love being downtown!
And finally, Beatles or Stones?
Both 100%
(Chris’ note, Umm, that’s 200% So that’s still 100% to the Beatles so.. )

The Great Outdoors
By Chris MurphyThere is no shortage of summer fun around here. Sure it’s been hot; but that’s how we roll. We have low humidity, there are local splash zones, we have parks with trees, creeks to stroll and ride along and there are a variety of indoor and outdoor options. The key is to just get going. Get going early. Many of our local schools start on August 7 and others a bit later, so there is still time to get the most out of your summer.
Summer Water Fun
This is an amazing year for river rafting. Needless to say we had a wet winter and the water flows on the Stanislaus are 750CFS – 1500CFS. These will be pretty exciting rafting trips. Weekends will be smaller for mellower trips. Weekdays will be challenging, no alcohol but it will be a blast. This is the year to check it out. www. raftadventure.com 800-829-7238
Disc Golf for Everyone!
By Ian RileyThere’s a sport that’s exploded in popularity over the last 5 years, is free to play at most parks, anybody can do it, and it’s not called pickle ball. I’m talking about disc golf; and Modesto has a thriving disc golf community!
If you’re interested in getting started, East La Loma Park is the most active disc golf park in Modesto, where it’s totally free to play. No reservations or official tee times are required. Just bring your discs and your friends or family, and if you don’t have anybody to play with, show up anyway. There’s almost always a member of MADG (Modesto Area Disc Golfers) by the first tee pad. And my favorite part about this sport, they’re always willing to show a newcomer how to play the game, just like they did for me 3 years ago. Getting started is as easy as getting your first set of discs. And locally, the best place for that is Play It Again Sports on McHenry Avenue. After that, come on down to the park where you’ll find me and the rest of the disc golfers, eager to show you how to play the game and grow the sport. Search Modesto Area Disc Golfers on Facebook or scan the QR Code here to learn more.
Pickleball is here!
Maybe you’ve heard about it? Just kidding. EVERYONE knows about Pickleball and they all have opinions about it. But one thing’s for sure, there a lot of people out there being super active, having a blast, meeting up with friends and getting some killer cardio time. Heck, you have to know algebra to keep score, so it keeps your head in the game.
This is good for our community and there are active leagues in Modesto, the most active being the Central Valley Pickleball Club. You can get three pickle ball courts in a conventional tennis court and there are courts around Modesto in Graceada and Beyer parks and more coming.
It is very easy to get going, find a place to play and if you post on their Facebook page, you can even find playing partners. There is also a national page, www.pickleheads.com that can direct you nationally. You need good stable court shoes, a racquet/paddle, stretchy shorts and a good attitude. I played for my first time at the Make Dreams Real Fundraiser at Del Rio and I had a blast. It was easy to get started, and fun to play and when you are done, you know you have been working out and are ready for hydration.

Bring the Outdoors Inside!
We all know that the Modesto heat was hot in July and can be sweltering in August, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the great outdoors indoors! Check out the Great Valley Museum of Natural History at 2201 Blue Gum Ave on MJC’s West Campus. It’s a great place to bring kids on a preschool field trip and make learning about nature fun (and stay cool!). In the Discovery Room, you can find snakes, turtles, toads, tarantulas, and so many other animals right in Downtown Modesto! Next door, there is even a planetarium to explore space with a variety of shows like Phantom of the Universe, Rising star, Perfect Little Planet for the kids and more! Check the website for the show details, schedule and tix. Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm.

Heads up friends, it ’ s Back to School on August 7th for Modesto City Schools.
What?? Is it that time already? It is a weird thing as everyone looks forward to school getting out, (listen to Alice Cooper’s School’s Out for confirmation of this fact), but most of us remember getting excited for school to begin. New school clothes, new lunch box, new backpack, rental trumpet and so many other things; these things are something to look forward to. Education is the key to so many things. It can change your future, change your interests and open new roads and opportunities. The calculator in your backpack is really a key to the future as you unlock the secrets of science and math. The trumpet you play teaches you how to read music and unlocks a big section of your brain. Understanding how the world works, how our government functions and learning how to do your own fact checking is key to our collective success. In this day and age, one of the best things you can do is spend an hour or so with your kids watching Schoolhouse Rock. These cleverly written cartoons teach civics and basic knowledge that are key to good foundation. If you start here, you are off to a good start.

Music in the Schools is our Future
Do you enjoy MoBand Concerts in the Park?
I do. What does MoBand have to do with back to school or our future?
Where do the MoBand musicians come from?
These are all great questions. We all love that there is this great music series with a band that has been around for over 103 years and plays the music of John Phillip Sousa, classic songs and hits from today. But how are we so lucky to have these? MoBand would not exist if not for music in the schools. This is the simple truth. Where do you think all of our saxophone, clarinet and trumpet players come from? Think about it, without music in the schools, we would not have the 100 plus musicians that play each week in the summer at Mancini Bowl. See how important this is? Many local music teachers also perform in MoBand.
This is really unique. How many cities have a MoBand? How many cities still have Music in the Schools. What happens when the budgets get tight?
Schools cut the arts programs. This is exactly the wrong thing to cut. Studies have shown that schools with arts and music programs deliver higher test scores and smarter kids. Why does this matter? Music is math, it is geometry, it is patterns, it is

Where were you in ‘62?
On August 1st, 1973, American Graffiti premiered at the Avco Center Triplex in Los Angeles. The coming-of-age film was co-written and directed by George Lucas. The film was released in stages across the country, opening on August 12th at New York City’s Sutton Theatre. On August 15th, an additional 23 theaters, including 9 in Detroit and 5 in Denver, began showing the film. The film continued to be released across the country until January of 1974. American Graffiti became the second-most successful movie in the history of Universal Pictures and number eleven on the industry’s all-time list. The most successful North American theatrical run of American Graffiti was a 63-week engagement at the Varscona in Edmonton, Canada. The longest run of the movie in the United States was a 54-week engagement at the Colorado 4 in Denver. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

COMEDY VIEW
By Middagh GoodwinMarcella Arguello has been called the greatest export from Modesto since George Lucas, and that is not an exaggeration. After dropping out of college and moving to LA to pursue a career in comedy, she has achieved great success. She has performed on the national comedy circuit, has several TV credits, a hit comedy album “The Woke Bully”, and an HBO Comedy special “Bitch Grow Up”. On August 18th, she will headline at the State Theatre. Doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm, with Lydia Popovich as the opening act. Tickets range from $35 to $100 for VIP tickets.
MV-You were raised in Modesto and graduated from Johansen High School, how does it feel to come back home and headline the biggest stages that Modesto has to offer?
MA-I am very pumped! I went to so many shows at The State as a youngster and it’s gonna be pretty cool to headline such a beautiful and historic venue. I hope all my local groupies show up!
MV-In 2009 you won the first-ever Modesto Area Music Award for comedian, since that time you have gone on to rack up accolades, tell us about a few that stand out.
MA-It’s always nice to be awarded anything for doing my favorite thing but getting recognized this year by the Mayor of Modesto,
La Flaca Explosiva! An Interview with Marcella Arguello
Sue Zwahlen, for my HBO special was a stand-out moment in my career. Next stop: her job.
MV-How does it feel to join such legends as Margaret Cho, DL Hughley, Eddie Griffin, Steve Harvey, Janeane Garafolo and so many others with an HBO comedy special(Bitch Grow Up)?
MA-Surreal. I’m also glad the half-hour special is making a strong comeback. We were introduced to so many comics in the 90s via half-hour specials, I think it’s a perfect way to get a nice dose of someone and their style. And I won’t be doing any material from that special at The State so make sure to watch it before you come out!
MV-You produce your own monthly comedy showcase Woman Crush Wednesdays, which features up-and-coming as well as nationally-known female comics. How does it feel to give the next generation a chance to shine on stage?
Something to Laugh About
Comedy has sometimes been the red-headed stepbrother to the entertainment scene in the 209. The last few years have shown that comedy is a force in the 209, and at the State Theatre’s American Laughiti comedy competition, where Scott Powers took home $5000 keeping a nearly sold-out crowd laughing for his 13-minute set, and Nick Larson squeaked out a win in a postshow laugh-off against Rhoda Ramone winning $1500.
You no longer have to go to Sacramento or the Bay Area for a fun night of laughter, you can catch great locally-produced shows nearly every week in the Modesto Area.
MA-Crazy story. I went to watch Bill Burr at The Forum in Los Angeles, a huge stadium for comedy. His opener was this brilliant young comic I know, Bianca Cristovao. So, after the show, I’m chatting it up with Bill and I say how dope it is for him to give a young woman such a glorious opportunity and he tells me, I kid you not, that he saw her at MY show Women Crush Wednesdays and that’s why he booked her! It made my little Grinch heart grow three sizes that day. It’s been unbelievable to hear these types of stories come out of a show that means so dang much to me. I wish everyone was down to help everyone but we all know that’s not the case. But I certainly love it.
MV-Your debut comedy album The Woke Bully(called one of the best comedy albums of 2019), debuted at #3 on the Billboard Comedy charts, do you have a follow-up planned?
MA-Yes! My next album should be drop-
By Middagh Goodwinping soon, it’s called Mercury in Reggaeton because it was one of the worst headlining weekends I’ve ever done. EVER! Everything went wrong! And we still managed to put together a really fun and wild album. It’s not just material like the first album, there was a lot of audience participation, which as we’ve learned from internet clips, is such an unpredictable ride. A lady ADMITTED to drugging her husband, I had a blast making fun of her. So yes, VERY different from the first album.
MVAnything else you would like our readers to know?
MG-My opener Lydia Popovich is so freaking funny. I cannot wait for people to see her.
MV-Final Question(this is the patented Chris Murphy question) The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?
MA-Well, my dad loved The Beatles so definitely them!

Did anybody say been too long at the Fair? The summer has turned into a slow burn, up at the crack to start the day and cower inside until safe to return to the outside. My dog loves to walk but midday walking he gives me crazy eyes does his business and hasty sleigh dog pulling to the house. I asked an old timer who has lived here his whole life “Do you ever get used to the heat?” He answered with a resounding “No!” My vegetable garden loves the heat, but my brain just doesn’t work so well when it’s a triple-digit day. Of course, it’s better than living in Death Valley at 125 degrees but every so often I go to visit my home town Bezerkely CA and bask in a 70-degree day with ocean breezes. On to the business at hand, hoping you are beatin’ the heat!

Defy the Trends, Support the Arts
There are always new shows added, like Cheap Trick and ZZ Top at the Gallo and Ringo Starr coming in September to the Fruit Yard. Remember to check www.modestoview.com or follow us @ modestoview on the socials to stay in the loop.
Here are some key highlights this month.
Gallo Center
Can Modesto keep defying the trends?
There is something great happening here that we all need to pay attention to and make sure we are all enjoying and most importantly participating in our local arts and performance community. Gallo Center CEO, Chad Hilligus, is reporting that the arts in some of the larger cities nationwide are suffering. Low attendance, and lack of interest causing closures in some places like, Tulsa, Brooklyn, and even LA. Recently attendance has been down for of some of our local performances, but not to the degrees of these other markets.
Modesto, we can’t let that happen here.
But Modesto has a chance to really buck the trends like we always do. Modesto is so very fortunate to have the Gallo Center, State Theatre, Central West Ballet, Opera Modesto, Modesto Symphony, Modesto Performing Arts, Prospect Theatre, Gallo Repertory, YES Company, and school music and drama programs. BUT, these are not successful unless you go and see performances or be a donor or sponsor.
We all need to put down our devices, turn off the TV and go see a live show. Gallo, Prospect, Turlock Theatres have all announced new seasons. The Modesto Symphony will kick off the new year with Picnic at the Pops, tributing Aretha Franklin on September 9. The one and only Donny Osmond will be at the Gallo Center this month, August 10. There are cool indie spaces like Off The Air, presenting in the cool basement speakeasy of Greens on 10th.
We have big variety. Classic rock, modern rock, country, indie/experimental and so much more. Truly, something for everyone. I personally support many of these organizations and I could attend more.
So I throw this 2023 & 2024 challenge out. Pick a few extra shows to enjoy. If each of us attend 2 or 3 more, it makes a huge difference and keeps our community creative and interesting. If you can’t make a show, please purchase a season subscription and donate tix or become a supporting donor. There are always extra perks if you are a season donor, like advance tix sales and other benefits. Simply, the live performance arts make a huge difference in our community.

Martial Arts Fitness
By Efren MartinezKung Fu, Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, and Aikido are all forms of martial arts that offer an intense workout. But practicing martial arts offers much more than just physical exercise. It requires dedication, hard work, practice, discipline, communication, respect, self-esteem, and leadership skills.
Modesto has many different types of martial arts studios. One that comes to mind is located across from my gym and is where my friend Nathan Jacobs belongs. Nathan has been studying Tae Kwon Do with Master Derwin Yee at Yee’s Black Belt Academy since he was 5 years old. He’s an amazing kid with a kind heart who would only use his martial arts talents in self-defense or to help others who can’t defend themselves. Nathan, who is now 10 years old, recently received his 1st-degree black belt in Songahm Taekwondo. However, what really caught my attention and impressed me the most, apart from his dedication and age, was one of Nathan’s martial arts talents. He has mastered the nunchucks while doing the moonwalk, which has become his own famous and intimidating martial arts move. It takes a great deal of concentration to
perform, and I’m sure it’s one move that even Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris never mastered. Honestly, if you ever face off against Nathan and he does his moonwalk while slinging the nunchucks, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
He’s so cute that instead of wanting to engage him in a competition fight, you’ll just want to hug him and be his friend. Now that’s what I call a defensive move with an awesome outcome that ends in friendship.
Regardless of the style of martial arts you or your children decide to practice, you will benefit from the discipline aspect as well as the extreme fitness side of it. You’ll also be surrounded by a great group of people who are striving to live the healthiest lifestyle they can with what inspires them.

Happy August Modesto!
By Grace McNameraIt is hard to believe that our summer is coming to a close, and a new school year is on its way! As the school bells draw near, I am excited to start my senior year at a brand new school, Central Catholic. I hope this school year can be a new beginning for everyone. I plan to cherish my last year here in Modesto. This includes going to my favorite restaurants frequently, and heading to my favorite spots. Tucked away in the heart of Downtown Modesto, Churchkey has been a culinary haven for locals and visitors seeking a delightful dining experience. This restaurant prides itself on offering a unique and diverse menu that tantalizes taste buds while providing a warm and inviting ambiance that leaves you coming back for more. You won’t get better tater tots anywhere else than here. Whenever I find out my family is going out to eat at this restaurant, I smile from ear to ear. I don’t take enough advantage of this
restaurant being so close to me. Something I talk about time and time again is the movie theaters. If I could be at the movie theaters all day, I would. Luckily for us, we have a few beautiful theaters, one being the State Theater, which I recently performed at with Strut Performing arts! Movies are constantly being shown there, and they have the most delicious snacks including their amazing popcorn, pretzels, pizza, soda, and much more. I have even gone in there just to get a bag of popcorn and a coke because it is just that good!
Walking downtown is one of my favorite feelings. As you step into Downtown Modesto, you are instantly greeted by a sense of nostalgia and timeless elegance. The area boasts an array of historic buildings, some dating back to the late 19th century. I like to say that downtown is the “heart’’ of Modesto. I also enjoy looking at the many murals we have down there. They are absolutely gorgeous. Modesto is a beautiful city with many things to do. It is important to recognize the good and the beauty in things. I hope that as we all settle into this new school year, that we keep this in mind!

Change
By Mary LaytonThere’ve been so many changes in a relatively short time all over the world in recent years; it is mind boggling! What’s next? Seems like anything can happen, from places shutting down to them reopening again or closing for good. There’s uncertainty but we seem to be used to it now. It is what it is. We have seen that we can be resilient, that we can re-invent ourselves and be creative. We adapted quickly to new ways of communicating and navigating to unfamiliar destinations. Getting lost is a thing of the past. Our cars and phones take us where we want to go. Time goes by very fast. We talk less to friends and family and text more. In-person meetings happen less. Initially we liked the idea of being able to get so much done using our devices any moment of the day thinking it would give us more freedom, knowledge and more time. But we also got way busier, distracted and more restless.
Then there’s the pressure caused by rising prices and rising temperatures. We
are rushing through our days hoping to catch up with all the things that need our attention. The world is increasingly run by robots and computers. Businesses function differently than before, not always for the better. But I tell myself that all this is temporary and eventually things will change again and sort themselves out.
Learning how to adapt is the key to our wellbeing. The French people say, “The more things change the more they stay the same”.
Change is constant, unavoidable and a fact of life. The best approach to change and transformation is to keep an open and quiet mind that takes in and learns whatever is needed at the moment. I still have to remind myself to concentrate on only one thing at a time, i.e. to ignore my phone while driving. To be concerned for safety. Watch and listen more carefully. Don’t overwhelm myself unnecessarily. We always have more time than we think we do. Taking time to be caring and patient with ourselves as well as others brings quality and peace to our lives. One good change that put a smile on my face recently was an article in the Modesto Bee naming Modesto on 10th place as best “most populous metro area” to live in California! Wow!
