Hey Monsters, Today is the first day of our summer vacation, I know, I’m screaming from excitement too! Enjoy your freedom, the ability to eat, drink, sleep, and unleash your bowels whenever you want. No longer are you hindered by school and its strict schedules or the excessive amounts of homework and testing. This summer will be filled with plenty of events on the forums so I highly encourage you sign up for service events. The best time to do service is the summer because your workload is significantly lighter compared to the school season when you are drowning in homework. Additionally summer is the perfect time for ice cream and cool refreshing boba. Make sure to attend the various Key Club fundraisers throughout these fun summer filled months. Also, all of you will have free time and plenty of it should be used to get creative so I hope to see piles and piles of artistic submissions for the Great Wall of Spirit (page 8). That’s all I have for you guys now so I’ll leave you guys to browse through the newsletter, thanks again for taking the time to look it over and enjoy the rest of your summer vacation! In service and friendship, Eileen Eto

Hey y’all! Lesley here. If you didn’t know I’ll be serving you as your 2015-2016 Vice President. For all those Bachelor/Bachelorette/Bachelor Pad fans out there, we need to do some serious fan-girling! But all things serious, I hope to see many of you Key Clubbers out and about serving your community! If you’re looking for events that directly contribute to our club, sign up for our Recycling Sorting Party (page 14) and Kiwanis Family (page 15) events! For fun events, I encourage events such as ice cream socials or anything involving kids! I know when I did service I loved the satisfaction after contributing to my community, but I really got into Key Club after attending the DCMs (page 7) every month and meeting people throughout my whole division. With everyone so inclusive, I felt more inclined to attend division events and meet more people, emerging myself in the whole other world of Key Club. I highly encourage everyone out there to at least try to attend one DCM. When I was a member, an officer encouraged me to attend one, I never regret going. In service and friendship, Lesley Wong

Spotlight: May Monster of the Month: Gurnoor Kaur Hey Monsters! Hey! Hey! Hey Monsters! May I have a drumroll please because May’s Member of the Month is none other than Gurnoor Kaur! Gurnoor Kaur is currently a sophomore and in her second year in Key Club. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking and baking. Not only that, she enjoys volunteering and appreciates the variety of service events Key Club provides. Her favorite events include the Slime Rum, which gave her the opportunity to have fun throwing slime at marathon runners and even at Key Clubbers toward the end of the event. According to Gurnoor, community service enables her to have “the opportunity to give back to the community and it feels so good personally to know that even the smallest actions may have greatly influenced an individual’s life.” Gurnoor has been consistently attending service events, and even recently, she has been taking the initiative to sign up for Project Captain at service events.

Congratulations on being May’s Member of the Month! Your dedication for service is phenomenal. Words alone are not enough to thank you for taking the initiative to sign up for Project Captain as well as to attend service events with only a few Key Clubbers signed up. Your contribution to the community and to Key Club will not go unnoticed! Andrew Yu

Monster of the Month June Monster of the Month: Can I get a hip, hip, hooray for June’s MoTM, Michelle Ho! Michelle Ho is currently a freshman. Despite it being her first year in Key Club, she has been active in participating in service events, making sure that she is constantly helping out. Additionally, she has taken the initiative to sign up for PC as well as to search for leadership opportunities within Key Club. According to Michelle, her favorite event is none other than CKI Santa’s Gift of Service at Sacramento State because she “had the opportunity to make friends from other schools while working on crafts with special and important meanings behind them such as dog toys for shelter dogs and Christmas Cards for local hospital patients.” She volunteers because it allows her to “interact with the community and has helped her understands its needs. Also, it reminds her why it is so important for us to contribute and stay connected if we want to build and strengthen our community.” She enjoys volunteering as much as she enjoys the fun, welcoming, and friendly atmosphere within Key Club. When not volunteering or helping out with Key Club, she enjoys playing the piano, listening to music, practicing her taekwondo form, swimming, and hanging out with friends. Congratulations! Despite being your first year in Key Club, you consistently attend service events and look for leadership opportunities. I highly appreciate that you are very active within Key Club and that you contribute to the Key Club family. Thanks! Andrew Yu

“I helped at the Balloon Twister booth for the fair. I mostly just distracted the little kids who were waiting in the long line by talking to them because frankly, I don’t even know how to tie a balloon. My favorite part of the event was just talking to the little kids, asking them about their day and other random topics. Also when the little ones got super amazed by the balloon animals, it was a pretty adorable sight. I would like to give a shoutout to Jim, the Balloon Twister, who stayed an extra hour for the little ones.” -Sunshine Hurtienne Sunshine Hurtienne distracts little kids as the eagerly wait for their balloon animals

“Today, I worked at the popcorn booth, making and selling popcorn, and the bean toss booth, giving away prizes for those who threw accurately. I also helped other stations clean up after the event. My favorite part of this event was the popcorn booth because it was the first time I worked with popcorn, and obviously, I got to sneak the free food. This event was special to me because Helen Carr was my elementary school and it feels good to be able to come back to help” -Bryant Huynh Bryant Huynh gives children sacks to toss into the clown’s mouth

What made the event special to me was that my girlfriend also came to help even though she didn’t get any hours.” Ryan Tran gives children footballs 3: “My favorite part of the event was working at the Golf Station. I loved talking to the kids and giving them high fives. The best part of the golf station was when the kids would get the ball into the hole.” Subin Choi picks up golf balls so the little children could try to hit it in again 4: I helped with the inflatable games and then I went to go help prepare and sell food to the kids and parents. “At the Elk Grove Elementary Carnival/Auction I was assigned to a lemonade/iced tea stand. There I met a freshmen from Elk Grove High named Emily Chen. Together we filled custom Elk Grove Elementary water bottles with ice and either lemonade or iced tea. We ran out of lemonade quickly, but eventually we also managed to sell all of the iced tea as well. As the event was winding down and many had left, the volunteers left over helped put away tables, chairs, and other stuff. Overall it was a nice, relaxing volunteer experience.” - Joshua Diaz Joshua Diaz helps fill the custom water bottles with the various beverages

“I ran one of the games where kids had to throw poker cards at the watermelon and try to get two cards to penetrate in the watermelon...This event was special to me because it was the first event I’ve ever been to in the three years of being a Key Club member, and it was fun meeting and hanging out with people from other schools, but mainly, having fun with kids and chilling with Cynthia, laughing our butts off.” -Nathan Sy

Relay for Life Set Up

“I helped out various people who needed assistance setting up their site. I also attempted to prevent cars from entering the track. My favorite part of the event was seeing people I recognized participating in Relay for Life…[It] was amazing to see the coordinators set up an event to honor cancer survivors and raise money to combat cancer.” Andrew Yu Andrew Yu assists with set up for Relay for Life

“There were a lot of volunteers working hard at the event so we finished very quickly for setup, many individuals such as me found it hard to find something to help with since everything was completed so efficiently. As a result we constantly had to go back to the supervisor to get something to do. We setup tents and canopies when we first got there but as setup started rolling and more volunteers arrived there was literally nothing we could do. After a while we finally got the job of setting up the stage for the performers but that ended very quickly and not much was left.” -Alvin Tze Alvin Tze assists with set up for Relay for Life

Recycling Sorting Party Photos taken by: Pauline Tze and Joshua Diaz

“It is undeniable that the stench was quite revolting, and that there were probably a million things that I could have done on a Sunday morning rather than sort month old recycling. However, attending the event is truly worth it because it brings funds to our club, and allows us to purchase many essential items as well as lower field trip costs. “ -Cynthia Tze Cynthia Tze takes out recycled bottles so they can be crushed

“During the event, we sorted through the recyclables that had been collected from the school over the past several months. These recyclables are then taken to raise some funds for the club. The opportunity to spend time with my friends made the event worthwhile. That alone makes any event a special one.” -Ryan Santiago Ryan Santiago uses a pole to gather all the water bottle caps into a single pile
