Editor’s Message Hey Monsters, As your summer passes, I highly recommend you remain productive and sign up for as many service events as you can. It’s better to start service early and to finish your hours before the busy school year starts. Also I highly encourage you guys to attend division events and to create something for the Great Wall of Spirit! I will accept any submission from photography, poetry, baking, fashion designs, drawings, painting, ceramics, origami, as long as it pertains to Key Club. If you love Key Club or would like your artwork placed in the newsletter I implore that you guys gmail me your artistic piece, its name if it has one, and the artist name. Aside from these words I hope you have an amazing summer and I wanted to thank you for checking out the newsletter. In service and friendship, Eileen Eto

Monster of the Month:

Nathan Sy Spring became summer officially recently, and the sun continues to shine brightly. Remember to drink plenty of water as well as to congratulate Nathan Sy for being the July Member of the Month! Nathan is an incoming senior, whose hobbies include playing the piano, swimming, and badminton. Despite not being an official paid member, he actively volunteers at various Key Club service events during the summer. He also appreciates the fun, welcoming, family-like atmosphere within Key Club. He plans on officially joining Key Club once the school year begins. Nathan enjoys helping out others, so he tries to volunteer at community service events often. In fact, he recently volunteered at Eric Ngo’s Brick Border Construction Project for both of the days available. According to Eileen Eto, who also attended the event, “Nathan took the initiative to help even during break time. He was also not afraid to lift all the heavy stuff when others could not do it.” Nathan enjoyed helping out his friend, Eric, with the construction project. Nathan learned a lot from the event, met new friends, and had lots of fun. As of result, it was one of his favorite service events. Congratulations Nathan! I truly appreciate your efforts to volunteer often and to be active in Key Club. Your attendance at the club meetings, your willingness to sign up for service events despite not being a paid member yet, and your hard-working nature during the service events definitely earns you Member of the Month! Andrew Yu

Stone Lake Ice Cream Social Photos taken by: Eileen Eto

“I was in charge of a bean bag carnival game and my favorite part was eating a delicious slushie after my shift and being able to hang with friends while volunteering. I also felt that the young kids smiling and having fun made the event really special.” -Jeremy Phen Jeremy Phen hands children things to throw

“At the Ice Cream social, I helped the little kids with carnival games. In particular, Serena and I handled the game where kids had to throw a football into a hole. You might think it's easy, but even I had a hard time making the shot! We also handed out prizes to the children. “-Rachel Yee Rachel Yee gives kids footballs to throw

“I managed the bean bag game. My favorite part was seeing all of the kids smile and compete. What made it special was meeting all kinds of new people including the kids and the other volunteers.” - Luke Foster Luke Foster and Amanda Tham work together at the bean bag booth to entertain children

When Lawrence and Allan Lee were interviewed, they discussed the beautiful weather on the day “At about 6:45 the outflow boundary of the storm moved through, increasing the wind, decreasing the temperature, increasing the dew point, helped substantially make it feel more comfortable.” When they had a brief respite from their hard work at the service event “the clouds were [an] interesting distraction.” Lawrence Lee and Allan Lee team up to give children balls

Brick Border Construction Project Photos taken by: Nathan Dang, Andrew Yu, Sarah Nguyen

“This event was special to me because it is one of those unique community service events where I actually got to go on my knees and work to beautify a museum. I got to learn how to create a brick border, which is a pretty awesome accomplishment for me! This event was filled with diverse tasks and fun! Another reason why this event was special is that I had the opportunity to give back to the community while working alongside with peers from the Troop 50! “ - Caressa Wong Caressa Wong works hard to create a brick border

“I worked with other volunteers to hammer and nail wooden templates around the garden. I also helped mix and pour concrete into those templates. “ -Pauline Tze Pauline Tze sweeps the pathway

“I highly enjoyed this event because it was so different from other ones. I got to do all sorts of different construction related activities and meeting new people in boy scouts that were also in Key Club and equally loved serving the community was heartwarming. It was also a surreal and fairly cool experience to see fellow Franklin High School students, not in Key Club, do community service; because of this event I got to meet new people and become closer to those I already knew. -Eileen Eto Eileen Eto helps smooth wet cement

Recycling Sorting Party Photos taken by: Pauline Tze

“During the Recycling Sorting Party, we crushed recyclables and sorted them in different bags. This event is special because it makes me feel super productive. Unlike other events, I sweat more and it's worth it when we're finished .“ -Sunny Hsu Sunny Hsu helps sort through recyclables

Although recycling sorting parties often involve repetitive motions that are considered boring, members can still find fun things within the event that can make it more interesting. For example Alvin Tze “[found] an empty gallon jug, [filled] that up with water people wasted, then [sprinkled] that waster on the lawn.” Even during a service event Alvin found a way to have fun while helping plants and reusing waste...G Double O d J-O-B Good Job!
