ADVICE FOR CHOOSING YOUR
Wedding Photographer Hi. I'm Abbie. I've owned Abbie Takes Pictures since 2009 and deeply believe in capturing the true essence of who people are when I photograph them. When it comes to wedding photography, it's so important to do your research and educate yourself on the photographers that you're drawn to. I'm here to help you and would love to have you in for a consultation soon! Reach out ASAP to any of the contact details below!!
Abbie Takes Pictures Do We Need An Engagement Session? ABSOLUTELY! Here at ATP, we use our engagement sessions as a way to learn what our couples like, photographically, and how they really want to look in their photos. It gives us a chance to teach you our best posing tips & tricks, as well as giving you a chance to get to know your photographer in a
Untitled-17 2
very personal way! We also get feedback from our couples a month or two after they've seen their engagement photos, to see what images they are still in love with and are really drawn to because this is how we customize what we shoot on their big day!
12/13/21 10:57 AM
Beyond A Website Portfolio Sure, the photographer you've been drooling over obviously has amazing imagery on their website and social media accounts. However, are they only posting their "showcase" images? Are they even images from real weddings or just styled shoots? Make sure you ask to see a few full wedding galleries from the photographers you are truly interested in. This will give you an idea of the overall feel and scope of their skill set. Make sure to look at the family portraits and the reception images!
Catch A Vibe In order to have really great photos, Abbie believes that you need to truly connect with your wedding photographer. She says, "When you meet them, because interviewing your potential photographers is a must, you should get a gut feeling about 'the one'. You should feel like you want to be their friend, you'd enjoy just grabbing a bite with them & that there's a sense a real trust can be built between you guys. Make sure that you truly click."
No cheesiness. No awkwardness. Just awesome pictures for awesome people. 314.616.2794

Ffrom R O M the T H Eeditor EDITOR
What is done in love is well done. In my 20+ years of working at Saint Louis Bride, this is the first time I helped produce an actual wedding from beginning to end. Enter Katie Deelo and Brian Jones, the winners of our Beyond Van Gogh Wedding Giveaway. We took about eighteen months of wedding planning and smooshed it into about thirty days. It was a whirlwind, but oh, it was so worth it! Their wedding was a work of art itself as you will soon see. pros we have in St. Louis who committed to this event and said, “Challenge accepted!” They love what they do and it shows. Witnessing Katie and Brian’s love and many of their “fi rsts” as husband and wife – fi rst kiss, fi rst dance, toasts, and well, even fi rst bites of cake – brought back many memories for me. The old adage “it seems like yesterday,” rings true. As I approach my upcoming 16th wedding anniversary on March 3rd, I look back at our marriage fondly. My husband Ed and I have continued with other “firsts” in married life and faced numerous joys and adversities over these sixteen years. We’ve been blessed with our children who aren’t so little anymore. We’ve mourned the passing of our parents and loved ones and we’ve celebrated life with countless birthday parties and festivities. We’ve said goodbye to three of our beloved dogs and welcomed three more, and a bunny to boot! (And, if you ask my daughter, she’ll probably tell you there’s a horse in our near future, too.) We’ve had changes in our careers, schedules and work hours. We split our time between our jobs and carting kids to their respective schools, football practices, dance, basketball and horseback riding lessons. Vincent Van Gogh said “It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.” He’s right. Do all the things and do them in love.
Nancy L. Slade, Editor P.S. Happy sweet sixteen, babe! Cheers! Ed and me on our wedding day in 2006 and this summer at the beach with our children, Edward and Marie.

T H E CO U P L E : Real wedding couple and our Van Gogh Wedding Giveaway winners, Katie Deelo and Brian Jones, tied the knot inside the Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, on November 10, 2021. T H E LO O K : Katie wore “Bradbury” by White One By Pronovias, featuring Mikado silk and cathedral train, from Bridal Parlour. Brian wore an exquisite peaked lapel one-button fitted tuxedo jacket by Ike Behar with matching super 120’s fine wool fitted trousers from Stallone’s Formal Wear. His shirt was a fitted, lay-down collared pleated tuxedo shirt and accessorized with a black bow tie and cummerbund with black studs and cufflinks as well as black suspenders. garden style, hand-tied bouquet that captured the elegant yet whimsical essence of Van Gogh’s work. This bouquet had white Garden Roses, Ranunculus, Queen Anne’s Lace, Lisianthus, Spray Roses, and Campanula. The bride’s bouquet, along with the rest of the florals, contrasted the wonderful textures of nature with the contemporary display at the exhibit creating a stunning and modern theme for the lovely couple’s special day.” – Sara Ward, Wildflowers HAIR & MAKEUP: “Katie wanted an elegant yet modern hair and makeup look. It went perfectly with her gown and other details.” – Jennifer Lynch, Flawless Bridal Co.
I was so honored to be one of the only professional photographers allowed in to the Beyond Van Gogh Exhibit. Photographing in the dark space was one of the most technically challenging things I’ve ever done in my career but I couldn’t be happier with the results! Our bride and groom were incredible to work with, which made the entire process so enjoyable!

CANDLES T H AT C O N N E C T From a young age, owner of Coda’s Events, Charley Coldon, learned to associate scents with memories. Her mom burned candles and incense around the house on Saturday mornings while listening to good, soul music. Charley wanted to connect her love for candles with her love for self-care and to give other black girls the opportunity to have access to therapy so they, too, can begin their own self-care journey. There are five available scents and are $25 each with

30% of each candle sold being donated to The Loveland Foundation which makes it possible for black women and girls to receive therapy
What do you get when you combine a cake pop with alcohol? You get Boozy Bites from Amy’s Cake Pop Shop! We love a bold statement piece, which is why this dramatic crescentshaped bouquet is one of our favorite designs of the year! It’s a modern interpretation of a classic cascade, yet still embodies the romantic style Belli Fiori is known for. The vibrant colors of the bouquet, the elements of dried flowers, and the shape just speak to me. I feel like the colors draw your eye in and the orchids make a statement. When designing the bouquet, I wanted to create a unique shape and color scheme. Caroline’s attention to design and detail were very apparent when working with her. We went through a few different color and style depictions before our final palette was chosen. She wanted vibrant, horizontal bouquets in shades of reds, bright and soft pinks with a minimal pop of soft blue tweedia. I found the most stunning red and ombré pink anemones, utilized 8 different varieties of garden roses and popped in some coral berries to create depth and texture. “This shoot tells the story of a couple whose dream tropical elopement was cancelled due to the pandemic. As so many couples before them, their love was nothing to put on hold. It may not be a getaway, but the short trip to the backyard created an unforgettable elopement. This is the epitome of ‘when life gives you lemons.’ Inflatable flamingos, coconuts, balloon walls, and jumping in the pool in your dress, just goes to show you can have a fun wedding wherever you are. It also goes to show that the budget doesn't have to forgo class. I think this shoot can lend advice to any bride. Casual mixed with classy gives you the luxury of dressing up along with the comfort of a good day. Fun-filled activities and drinks were included to make this day extra special.” 134

Claude Monet’s ‘Waterlilies’ with its soft purples, blush, muted greens, and blues painted a perfect blend of impressionism art and springtime for this shoot. Marylyn wore a botanical embroidery and soft net tie back dress while Andrew wore a classic black tux with swanky velvet shoes. As Monet said, “I must have flowers, always, and always.” We put heavy emphasis on florals with a jaw-dropping bouquet that featured fragrant Lilac, Lavender Clematis, Bridal Wreath Spirea, Butterfly Ranunculus and Garden Roses. Peonies and Parrot Tulips in soft coral were added for a touch of contrast. “The beauty of the day only served to remind us, no matter how dark the winter, spring is always coming. Underneath the frozen earth, the buds of new life are breaking out of seed, waiting to push through soil and bloom with brilliant colors. It is our hope this styled shoot brings you beauty no matter what season you’re in, and reminds you even if winter is long, or days are dark, or heart ache feels like a personal pandemic, the healing hues of spring are just around the corner.” 140

OF HOW THIS BUSINESS
Interview by Molly Rose
GOT STARTED. NJ: My husband Dane and I were
married in August 2017 and we had our dog Greta, she was one when we were married. It became complicated, we had a window of time between the ceremony and the reception. We wanted to be able to have her brought there then brought somewhere where she would be taken care of. We ended up using a guest and they didn’t mind but we felt bad about it. When we adopted our dog, we just kind of dove in headfirst, it became something we were really passionate about and got involved in the rescue community. We had done our fair share of fostering pets, so we’ve handled a lot of breeds and temperaments. SLB: WHAT TYPES OF SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

By incorporating bold color choices, Winter weddings have a beauty and elegance all their own. The colors pop against the landscape to create a breathtaking aesthetic. “We were blessed with beautiful weather for this shoot and the couple were insanely stunning and a joy to work with! The red barn in the property was the perfect backdrop for this winter shoot and the wood details inside the barn made everything feel so cozy. “Live! By Loews–St. Louis is known to be a Cardinals haven. We wanted to represent a similar color palette but showcase the property and all of its incredible spaces for those who didn't necessarily want to do a Cardinals-themed wedding. You could say ‘I Do’ onsite but also host a cool Cardinals welcome party. Who else has a private outdoor lawn overlooking Ballpark Village? Our vision was to include colors, looks and florals that were ‘season-less’ and on par with the timeless luxury that the Loews brand offers on all of their properties, worldwide. We were going for ‘classic with a twist’ and ‘attainable luxury’ that felt relatable to all. We always want to produce projects where everyone involved can have fun while still completing the tasks set forth by the client. That's why we put the models in robes and had them have a popcorn fight! It's a way to showcase the rooms for the newlywed's first night, but also reflects the spirit of what we do. We also mixed in some street wear looks and staged a mock bachelorette party in a suite. We love the idea of creating situations that feel real for those who will be considering the hotel for their Big Day needs, but also keeping the quality of those images and that experience high-end. At the end of the day, weddings aren't just weddings anymore. It's an entire experience with multiple events and photo-ops along the way, from engagement all the way through the honeymoon.”

SAINT LOUIS B RIDE: ADVERTORIAL
The Diamond Bar
Chris recently shared his advice for jewelry shopping with Saint Louis Bride Magazine on how The Diamond Bar understands the emotions and sentimentality involved in purchasing engagement rings and wedding bands:
ON DIAMONDS:
B
e different. That’s what every bride wants on their special day. So why not have your engagement ring be different than everyone else’s too? The Diamond Bar is a relaxing and exciting custom jewelry store that masters being “different” in many ways. From the moment you walk in the door, you are able to grab your favorite drink and begin designing a truly unique engagement ring to fit your budget, style, and unique love story.
The Diamond Bar, located in Town and Country, has been named “The Custom Jewelry Store of Saint Louis” in many publications due to their amazing customer service and truly unique one-of-a-kind hand crafted jewelry. Chris Phillips, Owner and Master Craftsman, created The Diamond Bar to combine luxury, creativity, and customized craftsmanship into an intimate and inviting shopping experience. “We feel that by bridging the gap between conventional jewelry stores and online retailers, our precise process ensures we give you the absolute best quality diamond for an exceptional value while giving you a truly unique ring made just for you.” While getting to enjoy a beverage of your choosing, The Diamond Bar focuses on transparency and education in the jewelry shopping process. Chris wants customers to feel comfortable having a conversation centered around education on what they are buying. Phillips has been in the jewelry industry for almost two decades and has the experience for the constantly changing trends and techniques.
“No two diamonds are ever the same. When comparing stones, Try to look past the carat weight and instead consider the quality and dimensions of a diamond. Steer clear of ‘designer’ rings and diamonds that typically have a much larger mark-up.” Phillips also suggests: “Make sure your diamond is GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certified. Ask where the ring is made, and only buy natural – not lab created diamonds. The value of lab created diamonds has rapidly declined over the past few years.”
ON SETTINGS: “Why not invest in a custom piece designed especially for you?” Chris and fellow designer Jess, tailor pieces specific to each client. “We have found our client’s appreciate having something unique that was well designed to keep their individual style in mind. We avoid mass-produced engagement rings with designer labels made overseas because the quality is usually not to our standard.”
O N E D U C AT I O N : “Transparency is our biggest differentiator. I encourage our clients to shop around and compare what we have to other stores. We recommend exploring several jewelry stores and purchase from the place where you feel most comfortable. I want clients to feel special and appreciated. Whether their budget is $1,000 or $100,000, I want The Diamond Bar to feel comfortable and inviting for everyone regardless of their budget.”

The wedding ceremony was my favorite part of the day. Walking down the aisle, with Brian waiting for me at the end, tears could not be held back. It was a very emotional and overwhelming moment. We had been waiting a long time and never could’ve imagined such an amazing setting to exchange vows in. Every detail was perfect. With loved ones there to support us, it felt like we were living the sweetest moments of a real-life fairytale. – Katie

PHOTOGRAPHED BY DAWN CORWIN CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY
“I really wanted to embrace The Factory's stunning interior design and the fact that the venue offers the most incredible lighting options. Every designer knows lighting is where the magic happens and I was lucky enough to have Logic Systems help me create the lighting scene for the ceremony and the reception. Even though The Factory is a concert venue as well as an event venue, I knew I didn't want to go with a traditional rock-n-roll look like with records, and leather jackets, etc. I was inspired by the late 1970s rock stars like Mic Jagger and John Lennon. As I was researching and creating design boards, I remember seeing an image of Mic Jagger and Bianca's wedding in 1971 and they both looked so impossibly cool. I picked a velvet tux jacket for Matt, our male model, and chose not to use a tie. For Ashley, I wanted something that flowed but it needed sparkle and Mia Grace Bridal provided the perfect dress. I purchased the starburst headband which I think really added to the 70s vibe. I kept the color scheme and floral design soft because I knew the venue's design would provide hard edges. I used light pinks, blush, ivory, sage green, and accented with a deep Merlot red and metallic gold. Decorum provided this amazing backdrop for the ceremony and lounge and I used accents of that design throughout.” 174

Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are: 1 All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state. 2 A Missouri license is valid for thirty daysfrom its effective date; an Illinois license for sixty days.
