New Student Orientation

On-Campus Orientation

On-Campus Orientation is an early summer program that exists to connect new students and their families with members of the campus community, including other incoming students, current students, faculty, and staff. During orientation you will:

• Get introduced to resources that will support your success in your first semester and through graduation.

• Discuss the college transition process.

Online Supplements

• All new students are enrolled in a Canvas online orientation course after On-Campus Orientation. The purpose of the course is to provide new Mounties with information that they will need in order to successfully make it to the first day of class!

• Students will take required courses relating to alcohol awareness and sexual assault awareness through the online platform. It’s important for all students to engage with this material in order for our campus to be as safe as possible!

• For students who may have missed On-Campus Orientation, a virtual option will be available and announced mid-summer.

Orientation Leaders

Orientation Leaders are current students who are tasked with welcoming and guiding new students. Orientation Leaders guide students during On-Campus Orientation, contact students during the summer months, and assist with move in and Welcome Weekend/Week and ongoing activities!

Living On Campus

Residence Life

The residence halls at Mount Aloysius provide convenient and high-quality living options in the heart of campus. Living on-campus is the best way to experience the full college experience and to connect easily with your peers. Our campus is staffed 24/7, 365 with wonderful campus safety officers and residence life staff, so you can rest easy knowing that you have assistance whenever you need it.

Living on campus is considered a part of the Mount Aloysius College experience. Therefore, freshman, sophomore, and junior students are required to live on campus. If requesting a contract release due to proximity (within 45-minute commute from their permanent address), medical reason, or extenuating circumstances, the housing contract release form must be completed and returned to the Residence Life department.

Residence Life Staff

Resident Assistants are trained to help residents with the transition to college. This could include integrating with your roommate(s), mediations, and of course suggesting fun activities and events! Our professional staff include Graduate Residence Directors, Residence Life Assistant Director, and Residence Life Director, all who help to oversee the residential program.

Room Assignments

Room assignments will be emailed to new students in mid-July. Please know that we assign room locations based on when you completed your housing deposit, and then we assign based on how you answered the housing questions. You will receive the email to your student email account. Please be sure to check your mtaloy.edu account frequently, as this is how the college will begin communicating with you.

After you receive your roommate information, please reach out to your roommate directly to get to know each other and to discuss what each roommate plans to bring. A caution about social media-please reach out to your roommate to have a conversation with them prior to making immediate judgements based on what you see.

Page 8

Lofts

Bed lofting kits are available upon request for Ihmsen Hall. Students must submit a request to loft or bunk beds, as supplies are limited. Please note that beds in Saint Joseph’s Hall are unable to be lofted. Requests for lofting and bunking can be submitted by scanning the QR code and filling out the form.

Please note that a lofted bed raises the bed to fit furniture underneath the bed space, while the bed can be adjusted to be slightly lower, the lofted beds are purposely raised high enough to allow for the floor space to accommodate additional furniture. Use the QR code to view reference photos.

Fall Move-In Process

New students are invited to move into their residence hall space prior to most returning students. You will receive additional move-in information in August. Upon arrival to campus, you will be greeted by our staff and directed to your hall. Please be sure to check your student email for further information that will be sent prior to moving in. At your hall, residence life staff and orientation leaders will check you in and assist you with moving your belongings. Please bring additional helpers as our staff will be busy all day and will be unable to fully move you in. Our staff will not assist with large items (couches, etc) or with expensive items (T.V., computer, etc).

It’s not too late to sign up for fall housing!

Incoming and Outgoing Mail

The mailing address for student mail is 7373 Admiral Peary Highway, Cresson, PA 16630. Please be sure to include the student’s name. Students can mail letters and/or packages from the Support Center located in Room 7 in the basement of the Main Building. Payment must be made by cash only. Outgoing UPS packages can be dropped off at the Support Center.

Student mail is distributed to the student’s assigned campus mailbox in Ihmsen Hall. All packages can be picked from the Support Center or from our Amazon Hub Locker. Questions on mail can be directed to ResidenceLife@ mtaloy.edu.

Eating On Campus

Dining Services

Sage Dining Services provides tasty, convenient, and balanced meals designed by our chefs just for our community. We encourage all Mountie students to enroll in a meal plan so that you can have access to healthy food options while learning and studying on campus. Eating balanced meals can help fuel your body throughout the day and keep you focused in the classroom.

Dining Plan Options

Students living in the residence halls are required to be on the meal plan. Those students may elect one of the standard meal plan options. Commuters and clinical students have the option for a lower meal plan.

Additional Meal Plan Information

• New meal plan funds are added to your account at the beginning of each semester.

• Unused meals and Flex dollars do not carry over from one semester or academic year to the next.

• Flex dollars can be added to your account at the Business Office during regular business hours. These additional funds will carry over unconditionally until graduation or withdrawal from the College.

• Meal plan balances left at the end of the spring semester will not transfer to the following academic year.

• Meal plan pricing is per semester.

Dining Venues

• Dining Hall: Our main dining hall offers an all-you-care-to-eat option with hot entrees, complimentary sides, deli salads, fresh-baked breads and desserts, and beverages.

• Starbucks: Starbucks’ full drink menu is provided to our community. A campus favorite for sure!

• MAC Shack: The MAC Shack hosts Starbucks and Grab & Go options, including made-to-go salads and sandwiches.

• MAC Food Truck: Our college’s food truck boasts special menus and rotates around campus for easier access for our students.

Food Allergies and Dietary Needs

Our team of Registered Dietitians reviews each menu to ensure that everyone has something safe and nutrient dense to eat each day. We obtain a list of allergens that are present in the college and build menus accordingly. Students are welcome to meet one-on-one with the dietitian and/or chef to discuss their particular needs. Students may also schedule a tour of the kitchen and meal prep areas to view food preparation.

Dining Accommodations

Accommodations will be made for students with restricted diets, sick students, and students who will miss meals due to a conflict with a class, work, or clinical schedules or any other special College event. Sage managers are happy to meet with you to discuss specifics.

Paying For College

Business Office

Whether you are paying tuition, fees, or room and board, the Business Office will assist you with College’s billing and payment policies. Students are billed one semester at a time and bills are available approximately 1 month prior to the start of each semester. Invoices are due to the Business Office 1 week prior to the start of each semester and are available online by logging into your MyMAC Portal. Invoices can be paid by check, payable to “MAC.” Credit or debit payments can be made in the office, over the phone, or online through the MyMAC Portal. The Business Office also processes refunds, outside scholarships, and online payments. Students may grant a third party (for example a parent) to have access to certain features in MyMAC.

The Business Office is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year. During the summer, the Business Office is open Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Financial Aid

The Financial Aid Office assists students in financing their educational expenses through state, federal and institutional programs. When administering these programs, our staff works with all prospective students and current students.

Financial Aid is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year. During the summer, the Financial Aid Office is open Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

What is Financial Aid?

Financial Aid consists of grants, loans, employment, and scholarships. These resources may assist you with meeting your educational expenses at Mount Aloysius College.

How do I receive financial aid?

You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for grants, federal loans, and employment (work-study). The application is available online at fafsa.gov. Mount Aloysius’ FAFSA school code is 003302. You must be admitted to the college before your aid application can be processed.

The aid that you will receive will depend on your eligibility as determined through the FAFSA, state, and federal regulations, and the availability of funds for specific programs with limited funding.

Page 12

When do I receive my aid?

Grants, loans, and scholarships will be shown in your MyMAC account. These are applied directly to your account at the beginning of each term. Once you complete all requirements, the aid will be released. Note that there are additional application steps for loans. You will receive information on these if a loan award is accepted. If your aid for the semester exceeds your charges, you will receive a refund via paper check.

We will contact you via your school email address if at any time we need to speak with you regarding your financial aid. All other correspondence will be mailed to your home address or the address you listed on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Come to the Financial Aid Office for:

• Help completing a FAFSA form, MPN’s, any and all financial aid forms

• Questions about financial aid (grants, loans, work-study, scholarships, etc.)

• Questions about your award letter or missing paperwork

• To hand in financial aid paperwork like a signed award letter, verification paperwork, scholarship or grant contracts, or applications

• For guidance on the different types of loans available and how to avoid excessive loan debt

• To find out about outside scholarships

Tips to help you throughout the year:

• Remember you must file for financial aid every year and you can do this at any time after October 1 each year.

• Stop by the Financial Aid Office throughout the year and check out the scholarships bulletin board. Scholarship information is received throughout the year from various groups and organizations.

• Check your MyMAC email account often. We will notify you this way of important deadline dates, requirements and other information throughout the school year.

• If you receive any type of financial aid, never drop a class or withdraw from college without first seeking the advice of the Financial Aid Office staff. Dropping or withdrawing can affect your financial aid now and in the future. Repeating a class will also affect your financial aid in the future so always check with the Financial Aid Office before you make a decision to drop, withdraw or repeat.

• Remember your financial situation is unique. If you have questions about your financial aid, please seek out a financial aid representative to answer your concerns or questions.

Working On Campus

Student Employment

Mount Aloysius College offers many different types of employment opportunities across campus including Dining Services, Facilities, Residence Life, Student Activities, tutoring, office assistants, and more.

Working on campus allows you to gain work experience with the benefit of flexible hours and scheduling to match class requirements. Working on campus gives you a convenient way to earn money without having to leave campus.

New Hire Process

If you are hired for an on campus job, you must provide documentation and complete the required forms to verify eligibility to work.

Work Opportunities for International Students and Non-Work Study Students

International students do not qualify for the Federal Work Study Program. Additionally, some students may not qualify for the work-study program through the financial aid process. If you are not able to complete work-study for either of these reasons, you may inquire with Career Development, housed in Administration Building 101, about hourly paid positions. We will work to keep an updated list of open positions on campus that you can apply for.

Work-Study

Some students may be awarded Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid package based on information submitted on your FAFSA. Work-study gives students a bank of funds that can only be paid to them through on-campus employment. The Financial Aid Office will send communication directly to students who have been awarded work-study. Work-study awards are not applied directly to tuition; therefore, the student must budget these funds appropriately toward their balance due, rather than spending wages earned on other items.

NOTE: Work-study is not a requirement to work on-campus. Students who do not qualify for work-study are encouraged to apply for on-campus employment as well.

Page 14

Commuters

Many Mountie students commute to campus. To assist commuter students' engagement with campus, we have created a number of designated areas for students to spend their time between classes. Some common hot spots on campus include: the Library, Cosgrave Student Center, Bertschi Center, the Hospitality Center, and many, many study rooms located in most buildings on campus (if you see open study tables or comfy chairs—they’re yours to use!).

Commuter students may purchase a meal plan so that they have easy access to hot and nutritious meals.

Commuter students are invited to participate IN ALL programming, activities, and student services on campus.

Commuter students are invited to use the ACWC (Wellness Center) to work out for free, it’s included!

The only difference in your experience should be going home to sleep!

If you have a suggestion, please submit it to the Student Affairs Office located in Cosgrave. We want to make sure that campus is an inviting and welcoming place for our commuter students!

Access To Support Child Care: The MAC Learning Center

The lower level of Cosgrave Student Center provides a children’s child care and learning center that is operated by Cambria County Child Development Corp. (CCCDC). CCCDC is not affiliated with Mount Aloysius College. The MAC Learning Center is open 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday and will serve children ages 2-5. For enrollment inquiries and additional information, please contact Cambria County Child Development Corporation at 814-472-6341, extension 26.

If you find that you have other clothing needs (warm winter items, etc), please do not hesitate to swing in to let us know!

Catherine’s Cupboard is free and confidential for enrolled students or current employees of the College. Typically, the Cupboard is stocked with non-perishable food, snack items, and hygiene products. Fitness classes may vary each academic year depending on certified instructor availability.

The northwest corner of the ACWC features the Wellness Center open to all commuters and on-campus students. With an emphasis on strength training and conditioning, the Wellness Center includes cardiovascular equipment (36 pieces of equipment), circuit training (14 stations), strength training, free weights, and a functional area for stretching and core exercise.

Parking & Transportation

Student Parking

Students may park in any lot designated for student use. A parking permit is required in all campus parking lots. Signs are located by each parking lot entrance designating the type of permit required.

Fill out the forms on the MyMAC Portal to register your car for a parking pass. You can pick up your parking pass in the Campus Safety Office in Cosgrave Student Center during Welcome Weekend. Make sure you bring your license and car registration.

Students who violate parking rules can expect to receive parking fines that are due prior to receiving your grades each semester.

Transportation

Ride sharing and public transportation services are limited in the Cresson area. Route 33 of the Cambria County Transit (“CamTran”) stops on our campus and travels to select locations around the region. Use the QR code to find an accurate transportation schedule.

We suggest residential students bring a vehicle to campus if possible. It is also recommended for students to share rides and carpool to local shopping centers.

Student Activities and Student Affairs will host occasional shopping shuttles, as well as a few shuttles to/from major airports at the beginning and completion of each semester. Scan or click to view the CamTran schedule.

Office of Student Success and Persistence

Advising

There are many tools on the advising portion of the website that new students can use to help them succeed at Mount Aloysius College. To access the student success and advising page on the College’s website, scan or click the QR code.

Once on the advising page, new students will have access to multiple sources of helpful information. This includes:

• A calendar of important dates

• Tips on how to be successful

• Important campus resources

• Answers to frequently asked questions

• The contact information for your academic advisor

Some things to remember:

• You must be scheduled for at least 12 credits per semester to be considered a full-time student.

• You must pass at least 24 credits per year to continue being eligible for financial aid.

• In most bachelor’s programs, to graduate on time you must average 15 credits per semester.

• Periodically check the MyMAC Portal for updates to your schedule, on occasion there are classroom or building changes made over the summer.

• ALL students (whether using financial aid or not) should check with the Business Office if they plan to add, drop, or withdraw from a class or the college after school begins.

Navigate

Navigate is our new Student Success Management System. It brings together students, staff, advisors, faculty, and others in a collaborative network to holistically support students across the college journey. Students will be able to schedule appointments, contact resources on campus, set up study groups, and more – all from an app on their phone.

Learning Commons

The Learning Commons is located on the first floor of the library. It provides academic assistance to students free of charge. Some of the services offered through the learning commons include peer tutoring and professional tutoring.

Scan or click to visit the advising webpage.
Page 24

Peer & Professional Tutoring

Mount Aloysius College offers two options for tutoring or all students: Professional Tutoring and Peer Tutoring. Certain courses also have supplemental instruction. All forms of tutoring are free for students and can be scheduled through our Navigate student app.

The Learning Commons also offers professional tutoring to students by our three professional tutors for writing, English, math, religious studies, psychology, and the health sciences. The professional tutors are located in the Learning Commons on the first floor of the library. The health sciences tutor also holds appointments in the main administration building. To set up an appointment with a professional tutor, determine which tutor you need to see and follow the steps in Navigate to schedule appointments with your tutor.

Registering For Spring Semester Classes

The spring semester schedule is published on the MyMAC Portal around fall break.

Online Registration

To register for classes, log in to the Portal page. Select the Student tab, then click on Online Registration on the left side to search for classes, and to then add or drop classes.

Students should:

• Know who their advisor is (this information can be found on the Student tab of the MyMAC portal).

• Be aware of the requirements for their degree and course work required to graduate from their chosen degree program.

• Keep their advisor informed about things like schedule changes, academic problems, change of major, sports schedules, enrollment in special programs (Honors, Mercy Presidential Scholarship, MAAAPP), etc.

• Schedule and keep all advising appointments to discuss ideas and questions about their degree program as well as utilize all referrals made by the advisor.

Things to keep in mind:

Students must meet with their advisors in order to be “cleared” for advising. They WILL NOT be able to add classes unless the advisor cleared the student to register. Although it is not solely the responsibility of the advisor, they will help students make sure all chosen classes are necessary for success and to help ensure timely graduation.

Student accounts also must be cleared. This means students do not owe anything to offices such as the Financial Aid Office, Business Office, Library, and Registrar’s Office. If the account is not cleared, a HOLD will be placed on the account, which will prevent students from scheduling.

Once you are cleared, log into MyMAC and click the Student Tab to see the registration assignment. Students should be sure to register on the assigned date. Once the schedule is entered, check the schedule by clicking the Student Tab and viewing the Student Schedule for the upcoming term. If students have any problems registering, they should contact their advisor.

If students need assistance inputting approved courses, please reach out to Academic Advising.

Career Development

The Office of Career Development’s mission is to proactively assist students with career planning initiatives from matriculation to beyond graduation.

The office will introduce students to professional career resources, provide information on community and campus career events, and allow access to employer job postings.

Career Development provides area employers with resources to promote professional opportunities virtually and on-campus. The office promotes a holistic and educational environment-- through multiple opportunities and events--that focuses on developing the career goals of each individual student.

The Office of Career Development is part of the larger Office of Student Success and Persistence, in collaboration with Academic Advising and Professional Tutoring. Career Development is located in the Administration Building, room 101, but will be relocating to the Library sometime in Fall 2023.

• To access your I: drive off-campus, go to the MyMAC portal and click File Access on the left. Log in with your Novell username and password. You can also use the Novell Filr app and use filr.mtaloy.edu for the server name.

• You also have access to the Google suite of apps through your Mount Aloysius email account. The Google Drive is a great place to store files that you may need to access on another device.

Computer Support

There are many different laptop manufacturers and models to select from and it can be a confusing endeavor. Students have different needs and budgets, so we recommend the laptop to have what we consider "minimum" specs. Preferred brands that work well at the Mount include HP, Asus, Lenovo, or Acer, but there are many others that make a decent laptop. We recommend staying away from Chromebooks. Although Chromebooks are decent budget options, if you need to install certain software for class, you may run into issues. MacBooks are supported, and many of our students use them, you will just be paying a bit more for one of those.

Students can receive a discount on their desktop or laptop purchase. You can see more details on the MyMAC site under “Discount Software” and “Free MS Office 365.”

Mission, Ministry, & Service

We are champions of our Mercy heritage, our Catholic identity, and finding ways to live Mercy through Service, Justice, Hospitality, and, of course, Mercy. We welcome everyone from all faith traditions as well as those who are agnostic. You are welcome here! As our name suggests, our office comprises three core areas. We hope you will join us in one or all of three areas. No matter how you find your way to us, you will find a warm and caring space. We also operate Catherine’s Cupboard, an on-campus food pantry, and the Mercy Hospitality Center, both located in St. Gert’s Hall, as well as Our Lady of Mercy Chapel.

Through our three core areas, our team is committed to sharing the College’s mission, Mercy Charism, and Catholic identity with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. We work collaboratively across the campus to infuse our values and the Mercy Charism into all we do – campus activities, faith experiences, classroom learning, community service, etc.

Mission

Learn about our rich Mercy heritage, and begin to understand and respond to the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy (Non-Violence/Peace, Racism, Immigration, Earth, and Women). By living our Mercy mission, students become engaged citizens of our community with a strong sense of purpose.

Ministry

Steeped in Catholic tradition and inspired by Catherine McAuley, we welcome everyone from all faith traditions as well as those who are agnostic. Our ministry team offers a wide array of programs and opportunities to enhance your faith and spirituality from individual spiritual guidance to group discussions or programs designed to spark curiosity and conversation.

Our goal is to help you, wherever you are in your faith journey, to deepen your relationship with God through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our office leads faith formation programs, hosts retreats, Bible studies, and a multitude of programs to enrich your prayer and spiritual life.

Catholic Mass – All are invited to join us for Sunday evening liturgy at 6:00 p.m. in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel. We are always looking for students to serve as musicians and vocalists, altar servers, readers, and/or greeters for the Mass.

Service

Service is at the heart of a Mount Aloysius education. It’s who we are and what we do. Students will have many opportunities to serve our local communities and help people in need through volunteerism. Service hours or projects are required in some courses such as LIBA 150, or as part of a scholarship award. Athletic teams and clubs are also required to do service.

Our office coordinates and leads monthly Mercy Days of Service. Open to all students, faculty, and staff, these opportunities require only a few hours of your time generally on a Saturday morning. We coordinate all the logistics including transportation. Occasionally, we offer longer, more immersive experiences that require an overnight or multi-day trip. These trips allow us to devote more time to a single project and expose students to needs in other parts of our country and world. These trips are planned during semester breaks.

Page 29

For self-directed service hours, we provide a list of possible sites that offer or have requested, service hours from students. You are responsible for contacting the site and coordinating all the details – dates, times, transportation to/from the site, etc.

Log your Volunteer Hours

Every time you volunteer, log your hours online. Just scan or click the QR code to track your hours. Tracking your hours helps us quantify and share all the ways Mounties are making a difference in our communities and around the world.

LIBA 150

LIBA 150 is a course that introduces students to higher education. There is an emphasis on connecting wellness and growth mindset to academic success, understanding learning to increase academic success, and developing relationships to increase belonging, all within the context of engaging classroom, campus, and community opportunities. It covers campus resources; the Mercy tradition; diversity, inclusion, and equity; time management, and many other topics that ensure student success.

Student Handbook

Students are responsible for knowing and abiding by academic and administrative regulations and codes of conduct as set forth by Mount Aloysius College as stated in the College Catalog and Student Handbook. Students, by the act of registration for classes within the College, agree to observe all provisions of the College Catalog, Student Handbook, Student Athlete Handbook, any academic handbook or program requirements, and all other college policies, procedures, and handbooks.
