The President’s Message Greetings Brothers,

Welcome to the start of our 98th charter year of Brotherhood and Service. It is my honor to serve to the best of my ability as your President for another fraternal year. I am humbled by the trust you Brothers have in me to carry out this awesome responsibility. As the world starts to emerge ever so slowly, (despite the setbacks), from the ravages of the Covd-19 pandemic I look forward to fellowshipping with you Brothers more in-person, and to provide greater in-person support to the community through the execution of our National Programs and in direct, sweat equity, support of community-based programs where there is a need even if it does not neatly fit into one of the categories of our National Programs. I am eager to for us to collectively fight against mediocrity wherever we see it, internally or externally, to make for a better existence of us as a Brotherhood and all of humankind. During the fraternal year I am expecting us to be reinvigorated to do the work of Alpha and to do that work where applicable collaboratively with like-minded organizations. I end this message with the words of Jewel Henry Arthur Callis as it eloquently sets the tone for what I would like for us to achieve this and every fraternal year. “The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality and fraternity. Our task is endless.” — Jewel Henry Arthur Callis, May 1946 Fraternally Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

The Vice President’s Message Mu Lambda - Mu Lambda - Mu Lambda

A hearty welcome to you all, brothers, well-wishers, visitors and family members to the 2021-2022 Fraternal year for our most noble chapter of Washington DC. We are steamrolling one year away from our centennial and it is my duty as Vice President of these great men to continue the call for fellowship and development in these upcoming months. My goal for the fraternal year is to leverage the balance of our opportunities and create avenues for continued growth: In short BALANCING THE BUSINESS OF MU LAMBDA with the BROTHERHOOD. This challenge to create equilibrium was met with open arms last weekend, as I welcomed 23 brothers safely to my backyard in Temple Hills Maryland, to sit and discuss ideas, the future, and plans for our brotherhood. It was met with a great deal of appreciation, amazing conversation, and the beginning of the Fraternal/Business Balances I hope to achieve for the chapter. This change starts with my own actions, and as chapter Vice President I would like to thank every brother who came and shared their insight, sipped a cup of choice libation, and enjoyed the spread prepared. Circling back to our centennial, we cannot ignore the importance of this momentous occasion! It is my duty to ensure that Brother Jason Jefferson, is well equipped to manage a celebration fit for kings! The pomp and circumstance must be filled with memories, legacy, tasteful gallantry and exquisite fanfare. But in balancing this idea of a centennial celebration I call for all brothers to be focused on firing the engine through all cylinders over the next 3 years.Community Service, Political Advocacy, Reclamation, National Programming, Local Programming, Events, Articles, Pictures, History, Archiving - This is a call for ALL COMMITTEES to be manned and operated as a tandem unit. We are no longer to talk about it this is the time to BE ABOUT IT. Mu Lambda is the chapter with the most influence in Washington D.C. and It is time to ramp up and have the most influence in all of Alpha Internationally. If you have read this charge and you are excited to serve, TRULY EXCITED TO WORK, give ALL your LOVE, PEACE & HAPPINESS to ALPHA. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday to activate this plan to bring Mu Lambda to the top. This task is not easy but we have a 98 year head start and legacy of brothers who have paved a road map of influence for us to utilize. We are the future of this chapter - Welcome to the Fraternal year 2021 - 2022, I hope you are ready to Balance Business and Brotherhood! Fraternally, Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

In recognition of Prostate Awareness month, we are excited to present "Living Beyond Cancer" a free educational event. We hope that you will attend and share the event with your networks. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Hope Connections for Cancer Support is delighted to partner with Prostate Cancer Awareness Alliance to bring prostate cancer education and awareness to the community. Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, more than 3.1 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some points are still alive today. But regular scanning and tests are important in being able to detect and treat the cancer as soon as possible. Hope Connections offers a monthly Men’s All Cancers Group and is having a virtual Educational Program on Living Beyond Prostate Cancer on September 13. To RSVP, go to: http://bit.ly/LogInMindBody

Season the chicken on both sides with salt and pepper, then add it to a skillet and cook it until it is golden, or 5 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set it aside. Step 2 In the same skillet, add butter and melt. Then add the onion, carrot, celery, and mushrooms and cook them until they are soft, or 5 minutes. Add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Pour in the wine and scrape up any bits on the bottom of the pan. Reduce the wine by half, cooking for about 7 minutes. Step 3 Add the broth and cream, then season with parsley, thyme, salt, and pepper. Step 4 Add the chicken back to the pan, and simmer until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce is thickened, or about 15 minutes. Serve and enjoy! Brother Derrick A. Butts

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
