The President’s Message
Greetings Brothers,
Welcome to the start of the penultimate fraternal year before we celebrate the 100th year of the chartering of our beloved Mu Lambda Chapter. I am again honored and humbled that you Brothers have entrusted me to serve as president of the Chapter for another year. I do not take this responsibility lightly and hope that I continue fulfil yours and my expectations of my performance. Looking ahead to the year I can tell that you Brothers are energized and ready to do the work of Alpha Phi Alpha. We have had two community service project before the fraternal started! I cannot recall the last time that has happened.
We are expanding our service based footprint in the schools of Washington DC and this could not be at a better time as the need seems to increase over time. We have again brought in good quality Brothers which is a hallmark of Mu Lambda – quality matters. We are starting the fraternal year with a higher number of financially active Brothers than last year. And Brothers who are new to the area are coming to Mu Lambda as their next Alpha home. We exceed our reclamation targets as well.
That is a testament to all of you and what you mean to our fraternity and to each other. I would say things are going well in this House of Alpha. Let’s continue to make our chartering Brothers proud as we kickoff year 99!
Fraternally, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President 2022 - 2023

Keeping our city clean & green
Residents, businesses, and the government all play a role in keeping DC clean, safe, and healthy. Only by involving all residents and each community can we create a District as beautiful as we know it can be.
Success begins with one neighbor and one community deciding to make a difference. Anyone can participate: individuals, families, churches, businesses, schools and other groups and organizations.
• Improved quality of life in your neighborhood. The appearance of our community contributes to the quality of life we all share.
• Signs with your group's name letting people know you are committed to making a difference.
• Meet your neighbors, strengthen your community connections, and build leadership skills. Become a role model to youth.
• Litter-free, more active communities help discourage rodents and unwanted and illegal activity.
• Increased economic development. An attractive, clean community is a great asset in attracting new businesses, jobs, and customers.

The Playmaker
BRO. DERON SNYDER | SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2022
If you were assigning odds on a race for Dartmouth’s greatest male athlete, the favorite’s résumé might feature a pair of Super Bowls and the second-most games played for an NFL franchise. Another favorite’s background might include a trio of first-team All-Ivy League selections in one sport, plus a firstteam selection and league championship in a different sport.
Or you could simply circle the athlete who possesses all those attributes, thereby giving the title to Reggie Williams.
“He was just lights-out one of the best football players I’ve ever seen,” says current Dartmouth coach Buddy Teevens ’79, who scrimmaged against Williams as a freshman quarterback. A 2007 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame and a recent nominee for the Cincinnati Bengals’ Ring of Honor, Williams stands among the greatest of all Ivy League athletes.
“I had no childhood aspirations of being a pro athlete or anything like that,” the hard-hitting linebacker says. He first touched a football at age 10, during one of the pickup games held on a field near his house in Flint, Michigan. “It’s where the big kids would teach the smaller kids how to play the game.”
He and his game blossomed at Dartmouth, he notes, thanks to the coaching he received. Williams excelled on the gridiron and the mat. Freshman football coach Jerry Berndt,
Linebacker Reggie Williams ’76 grabs the No. 1 spot on our list of the College’s best male athletes.

He and his game blossomed at Dartmouth, he notes, thanks to the coaching he received. Williams excelled on the gridiron and the mat. Freshman football coach Jerry Berndt, who doubled as the wrestling coach, helped convert the fullback to linebacker, and Williams was named captain on the first day of practice. A four-year wrestler, Williams won the Ivy heavyweight championship as a junior and was an All-Ivy selection as a senior.
The football team was dominant, having won three consecutive Ivy League titles when Williams made varsity as a sophomore. His season debut was delayed because a hit-andrun driver clipped him as he walked across a street that summer. But missing three games didn’t stop Williams from leading the team in tackles and being named to the All-Ivy and All-East teams as Dartmouth won its fourth consecutive championship.
The team slipped from its lofty heights, but Williams soared higher. At 6-foot-1 and 228 pounds, he was the Ivy League’s most impactful defender during his career. He still holds Dartmouth’s record for all-time unassisted tackles (243). He’s second in career tackles (370). He was named the team’s most valuable junior and senior, and he was an All-American his final season.
“The Ivy League wasn’t intimidating. The NFL was a tremendous challenge.”
Selected by Cincinnati in the third round of the 1976 NFL draft, Williams began his 14year career by making the All-Rookie team. He started for the Bengals every season and eventually became the franchise’s most productive linebacker. He holds team records for sacks (62.5) and interceptions (16) at his position. He played 206 games, one shy of the team high held by two other players.
Williams says he had to increase his drive in the NFL. “The Ivy League wasn’t intimidating,” he says. “The NFL was a tremendous challenge.” He found ways to crank up the intensity. “I didn’t use any air conditioning during training camp, and I slept on the floor,” he says. “On the day of the game, I never ate. I always had apple pie à la mode the night before the game, like I was a condemned prisoner eating my last meal. My mentality on game day, as a psych major, was constructed to intimidate.”
The Bengals grew to rely on Williams, who played best when the stakes were high and the lights were brightest. He led the team with 11 tackles in Super Bowl XVI, a loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Seven years later, in another Super Bowl loss to the Niners, Williams had a team-high 10 tackles and a sack.
His legacy includes two years on the Cincinnati city council—during football season. He later served as an executive in pro football and with the Walt Disney Company.
Williams made a difference wherever he went and remains a Dartmouth legend. As one former teammate, Delaware Gov. John Carney ’78, notes: “He’s the best player physically Hanover has ever seen.”
Deron Snyder wrote about hockey coach Nina Rodgers in the July/August issue. To learn how we selected and ranked Dartmouth’s greatest athletes, click here.

Greeting Brothers,
The 2019-2022 fraternal year was dedicated to rediscovering our brotherhood. We serve the community, but we have been neglecting our bond of brotherhood.
Since Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Mu Lambda has hosted the Mu Lambda Literary Society, every week at 7:00 pm. The Mu Lambda Literary Society is a Mu Lambda initiative, where we come together as brothers and discuss the two volume Alpha history book over a period of months. It was facilitated by a different brother each week. Brothers participated via Zoom.
We started with volume 1, chapter 1 of the twenty second printing of the history book and conclude with volume 2, chapter 8. There are twenty chapters in volume 1 and eight chapters in volume 2.
It was totally voluntary. You were not required to purchase the new history book. Brother Robert L. Harris, Jr. our National Historian and author of Volume II participated in the sessions.

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair
Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular check-ups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed.
As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.
My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our
journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk.
Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/ or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts.com to begin the discussion.
Thank you Brothers for your support!
Brother Derrick Butts

Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001
Alpha is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
