TWO JEWELS & TWENTY MEN OF ALPHA
OUR CHAPTER
Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.
CHAPTER LEGACY
There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.
FIRST OFFICERS
The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold StrattonPresident, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor DalySecretary, Brother Daniel W. EdmondsTreasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

APRIL MESSAGE
Greetings Brothers,
A special extension of greetings and congratulations to the Mu Lambda Chapter centennial line year initiates. I think you Brothers will make great contributions to the Chapter and the Fraternity’s as a whole as well as the Alpha experience being of great development to you as individuals. That we all live up to and actively execute on our mission “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.”
Congratulations as well to Beta and Mu Lambda Chapters winners of the MAAC Charles H. Wesley Brotherhood Award for fraternal year 2022-2023. At the almost 100 year mark of collaboration that is a good look. I am hopeful we can keep it going and improve on it for another 100. I look forward to us doing well at the Eastern Region Convention later this month.
I also want to acknowledge the upcoming 99th Birthday of Brother Arlester Brown a 1980 initiate of the Mu Lambda Chapter and thank him for his years of doing the good works as an Alpha Man.

ALPHA LOVE
Brotherhood is real
It grows a boy and a man into a man
It shows through Brotherhood
That you are loved
For who you are and can be
It’s the support
the unconditional love
The kindness
The calls and conversations
Through good times and bad Brothers are here and there
For you and with you
Supporting you
Holding you
Lifting you up
Showing you and us
That we are here for you
We are here for each other
The common ground
Of brotherhood
Without our brothers
What do we have
With brothers what do we have
Each other
The support
The mechanisms
The belief that it’s possible
We can achieve the impossible
Dream!
We can reach the mountain top for our brother
For whatever it is for you, my brother
Because as brothers
Because we are brothers
We will walk together
Talk together
Build on one another
My Brother!

ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH
Alcohol Awareness Month is organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Started in 1987 with the intention of targeting college-aged students who might be drinking too much as part of their newfound freedom, it has become a national movement to draw attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism on a whole.
Across the nation:
• 26.45% individuals 18 and older reported that they engaged in binge drinking in the past month (typically 4 drinks for women and 5 drinks for men in about 2 hours
• (An Estimated) 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually
• alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounts for 31% of overall driving fatalities.
IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the stomach and intestines. IBS is a chronic condition that you’ll need to manage long term. The exact cause of IBS is unknown.
Only a small number of people with IBS have severe symptoms. Some people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress. More-severe symptoms can be treated with medication and counseling.
Symptoms of IBS vary; the most common include:
• Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating that is related to passing a bowel movement
• Changes in appearance of bowel movement
• Changes in how often you are having a bowel movement
More-serious symptoms include:
• Diarrhea at night
• Rectal bleeding
• Iron deficiency anemia
• Unexplained vomiting
• Pain that isn’t relieved by passing gas or a bowel movement
AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
Autism refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitivebehaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 44 children in the United States today. Autism is a spectrum disorder with many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.
Signs of autism usually appear by age 2 or 3. Some associated development delays can appear even earlier, and often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Research shows that early intervention leads to positive outcomes later in life for people with autism.
THE MU LAMBDA BROS’ CORNER
Who or what inspired you to join Alpha Phi Alpha?
When you think back to your initial days of joining the fraternity, what is the word or phrase you would use to best describe the Mu Lambda chapter?
Who is or was your greatest inspiration in the chapter?
When the next edition of the Mu Lambda chapter’s history is written-what will your page say of your legacy or presence in the chapter?
because of the chapter’s connection to Howard. While I’ve not always been active in the chapter (I was OLA and general member for several years) I’ve always felt at home when I visited Mu Lambda. Brothers like Leroy Lowery were always men that I’ve admired and have expressed brotherly love towards me. That is why I’ve decided to return home this year.
Q3 Not sure if I have one single inspiration. As I mentioned, Brother Lowery was always someone I’ve admired. There have been several chapter brothers who I am friends withand we have shared good and bad times together. Brothers like Gregory Parks, JasonCallaman, Dana Gresham, and Andre Wells. As well as my own Mu Lambda line brother, Damion Rowe; who I have known since our college days.
Q4 That Eric Mitchell is a Brother’s brother
BRO ERIC MITCHELL (Sp99)
Q1 Alpha has always been in my heart. My dad is an Alpha, pledged Delta Beta (BCC). Although he never pressed the fraternity on me, I was always surrounded by great Alpha men. Once I arrived on Howard’s campus, I was Inspired by Beta Chapter’s connection to our African roots and how those brothers carried themselves on campus as leaders. That confirmed it for me that I must seek the light. From that point on, I knew that I was going to be an Alpha man.
Q2 I would best described Mu Lambda as legacy. I entered Mu Lambda in 1999
FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA
Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving.
The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs.
The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about?
As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund.
Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support.
Bro. Kent BenjaminThe Mu Lambda Foundation meetings are bi-monthly on the third Thursday of the month.
Next meeting is Thursday, April 10, 2022
Next meeting is Saturday, April 8, 2022
Greeting Brothers,
The 2019-2022 fraternal year was dedicated to rediscovering our brotherhood. We serve the community, but we have been neglecting our bond of brotherhood.
Since Tuesday, April 21, 2020, Mu Lambda has hosted the Mu Lambda Literary Society, every week at 7:00 pm. The Mu Lambda Literary Society is a Mu Lambda initiative, where we come together as brothers and discuss the two volume Alpha history book over a period of months. It was facilitated by a different brother each week. Brothers participated via Zoom.
We started with volume 1, chapter 1 of the twenty second printing of the history book and conclude with volume 2, chapter 8. There are twenty chapters in volume 1 and eight chapters in volume 2.
It was totally voluntary. You were not required to purchase the new history book. Brother Robert L. Harris, Jr. our National Historian and author of Volume II has participated in the sessions, and all sessions are chaired by our own Bro. Ryle Bell.

Every month that i have a chance to edit this magazine, I give way to the stories of my brothers and their activities as ALPHA MEN. I get to read and see the value of each brother. To this end, I want to pass the Torch on, to encourage the same learning experiences, fun new stories, and fraternal bond.
Fraternally,
BRO. MIKAEL LAROCHE EDITOR OF THE TORCH TORCH@MULAMBDA.ORGALPHA QUOTE TO SERVE BY...
“THINK Alpha Phi Alpha, TALK Alpha Phi Alpha, PROMOTE Alpha Phi Alpha, and LABOR for the broad principles of idealism for which Alpha Phi Alpha was created, so that humanity shall look on us as a body worthwhile.”

Alpha is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest
if you must, but don’t you quit.
