HISTORICAL MEMORY IN IBERIAN LITERATURE (MHLI)
MHLI (Memoria Histórica en las Literaturas Ibéricas/Historical Memory in Iberian Literature) is a research group working at the University of the Basque Country, focusing on artistic representations of historical memory. Since 2013, it has had the status of a Level A Consolidated Research Group recognized by the Basque Government, and currently has 13 members. To date, it has engaged in projects and actions funded by the University of the Basque Country (US 17/19; US 21/15), the Basque Government (IT 806-13; IT 1047-16) and the Spanish Ministry of the Economy and Business-MINECO (FFI2017-84342-P) (www.mhli.net). Since 2013, it has been led by Professor Mari Jose Olaziregi Aluztiza. The research group encompasses experts from different disciplines (specialists in philology, literary studies, art history and cultural anthropology, among others) and although its principal research topic is Basque culture, it also works with key external collaborators, both from the Iberian Peninsula and further afield. This enables experts in the different official languages of the Iberian Peninsula to compare their own cultural expressions with those of Basque culture, always in connection with representations of historical memory. Among the many projects that have been carried out over recent years, of particular interest are studies on censorship under Franco’s regime, divided into two volumes published in 2019 and 2020 (in the monographic issue of the journal Euskera and by the prestigious publishing house Peter Lang); seminars on memory and education, which gave rise to the course that was held in 2021 Miramar Palace, as well as to a book that will be published in 2022; conferences on memory or the contribution to the macro project entitled EDIRED (CSIC). MHLI is a dynamic group that explores artistic manifestations of the conflicts that disrupted the entire Basque Country.
